7:02 PM
Whew. Just got a cancellation notice from the UW. Thought it was for tomorrow's phone screening. But no, it was for a position I'd applied for last June and had received no other communications except the confirmation.

Heh, i remember 5 years ago had a phone screen with boeing and then never heard about them, until internal recruiter contacted me after 1 year 3 months and asked if i was still interested in the process -))))
It was funny.

@DanilaLadner you tell them "No, I didn't hear back so I went to work for AirBus" ?

yeah, i thought he was joking to be honest
but he wasn't

@DanilaLadner typical.
Friendly and Efficient Telephone Support. From the State Unemployment Office.
Woah.

Unemployment offices are strange.
When the economy is in the shitter and people are out of work they need more staff.
They have the names of people looking for work - so it would be easy to hire staff
If they hire staff people aren't unemployed anymore, and they don't need as much staff.

Rinse. Repeat.

7:16 PM
catch 22

@DanilaLadner Except it generally doesn't work that way for reals -- but you gotta wonder right? :)

@voretaq7 On the other hand, you generally don't expect to get people that are really awesome at phone support on state jobs either. They tend to be extremely over-worked.

@Magellan ...if they hired more staff they wouldn't be overworked!
overtaxed, yes, but not overworked :)

But I'm happy. My severance is not claimable income and I can collect unemployment during my severance period if I'm not on-call to return to work.
@voretaq7 Not sure how, but we manage to do both of those here.

@Magellan How is your severance not claimable income?

7:19 PM
@voretaq7 Because it wasn't a contractual obligation on their part. More of a inducement to waive my right to sue them.

@Magellan - you're in/near Seattle?

@mfinni Yeah.
I'm a Linux guy though.

@Magellan but you're in the USA.... according to the IRS that right there is income son :)

@Magellan Good to know. I'm in Boston, been a New Englandah all my life. Considering moving to your neck of the woods in a year+ ish

@voretaq7 sure it is, but not reportable for unemployment purposes.

7:20 PM
(maybe not for UE/state, but uncle sam wants his cut :P)
@Magellan yeah New York is the same way - if you get a severance package that's not "salary"
so UE doesn't count it

@Magellan I visited last year for a week vacation, came back this year for CascadiaIT

@mfinni Now's a good time. We've had two of the most amazing summers that I've seen in decades. Dennis Kaarsemaker is very lucky to be visiting now.

@Magellan Not ready to move now - got a wedding in-planning for next year

@mfinni Cool. I almost went this year but ended up scheduled to be onsite at the customer in Orlando for most of it.

@Magellan Winter is coming.

7:22 PM
@mfinni You'll like it. Especially as we have real mountains here. Sunrise Lodge is up around 8-9,000 feet I think on the flanks of Rainier.
@voretaq7 Eventually. It didn't arrive until early December last year instead of the usual early September.

@Magellan It was in the low 60s last week here.

It sure isn't here now. Got up to 93F yesterday. 85F is forecasted for today. Most years it's raining in September.

...then people complained so they rescheduled fall and it's in the 90s now

@mfinni Why leaving Boston? Boston is awesome imo.

System administration requires effort. There are a number of ways to accomplish this, these are just a few of those possible ways: 1. You can use Group Policy to add the domain Users group to the local Remote Desktop Users group. 2. You can manually add the local Users group to the local Remote Desktop Users group. - 3. You can manually add the domain Users group to the local Remote Desktop Users group. — joeqwerty 5 mins ago

7:24 PM
My kids said it was quite chilly in Upstate NY when they were there in early August. Was hot here. With real live thunderstorms.

^^ I love it Joe..."System administration requires effort." so stop being lazy OP!

@DanilaLadner Oh I love Boston too and will miss it. The missus and I do want to spend some winters away from ALL THE SNOW though.
She's in public health/social work/social justice, and I'm, well .... And we love cities, but have two german shepherds, and I love live music and good bars. We're essentially looking for Boston without the winters.

I want a pet beaver
2

So would a lot of married men.

no... a real beaver lol

7:27 PM
I constructed a query that has 14 AND statements...

@NathanC and then?

@MattBear Beavers are LAME dude. Get a platypus.
Pllllllllatypus

I love it. Job posting for the university. They want a 'network manager' MS in Networking plus 15 years with 8 years of network admin, 8 years of Linux, and 8 years of Windows domain mgmt.

Just because the software consuming said query is very limited in its processing of multiple rows

@voretaq7 so the 'beav or the 'pus?

7:28 PM
@voretaq7 Only if we can call it Perry.
Hey! Where's Perry?

@voretaq7 wait... why am I asking you

@MattBear Because I'm straight - I just like having sex with guys?

@mfinni You'd like Seattle. And I know lots of people in Social Services here. My fiance' still works in the field.

You know, like @Wesley is a total homo - he just likes having sex with women.

@Magellan Tucking that bit o' knowledge away, yes.

7:30 PM
@voretaq7 Surprised you diddnt tell me to get a trout... and name it hairy

@Wesley No call and no email from recruiter 2.5 hours later. plonk

@Wesley is a little obsessed with what comes out of the poop chute...

@voretaq7 I'm fabulous.
@MattBear POOOOOOOOOOP
@Magellan Yeah, he's/she's a lamer unless there's a serious emergency that had to be attended to.

And my search box dropdown is deranged:

dick ruby bouncy fuck kangaroo undo

7:33 PM
@Wesley Pfft. I've had one guy from Amazon call me 3 minutes before an interview to reschedule because he was in the ER with his kid.

@Wesley "Dick-rubby bouncy fuck-kangaroo? GAAAAAHHH! UNDO! UNDO!"

@Magellan Yeah well Amazon demands unholy levels of mental illness masquerading as dedication to the job.

@Magellan what a douche! you tell him to get his priorities straight?

@Magellan we are hiring linux admin -)))

@DanilaLadner but not in Seattle, I imagine.

7:35 PM
Well you could try to talk your way through, never hurts. Have Yale move.

lol

@DanilaLadner Satellite campus! Yale NW

Another storm...great.
Power just flickered.

@NathanC Fault Condition 72: Interruption in the uninterruptible power supply.

@mfinni Yale opened one in Indonesia, so it seems reasonable.

7:38 PM
I saw the VP of Sales from my old company at the gym the other day and he said "We were talking about you in the Exec meeting yesterday". I said, "good/bad?" He said, "It kept coming up that this sh*% never happened when #thecleaner# was here." :)
3

@mfinni Well, it's rarely cold here and usually quite wet. Ivy and moss grow like it's on crack here.

@TheCleaner GOOOOOOAAAAAAAALLLLLLLL

@TheCleaner Yes, that was my problem as job[-3]. Which meant that I'd never get hired or promoted to anything else.

@NathanC shit, best go jam something in the breakers so if there's a power surge they wont pop and bring anything down

Another reason why I left.

7:39 PM
@Magellan I actually got promoted a week before I resigned.

@TheCleaner That's unusual. Most places just leave the indispensable ones in place and pray they never leave.

I think they saw the writing on the wall.

@TheCleaner That's something you put on your resume.

@TheCleaner was it a number to call for a good time?
cause I put that up....

Yes...it said for a good time call 1-800-827-6364

7:43 PM
@TheCleaner lol that is a good time.... warner

@Magellan yup.
@TheCleaner For an adequate time call....

Mmm. I'm eating peach custard pie for lunch.

@Magellan Tough being on the dole then, eh

@mfinni Got a smoking deal on a box of peaches on the way home from camping a few weeks ago. 20# for $12. Gonna be in peach pies all winter. I'm one damn happy camper.

7:55 PM
@Magellan The way your story and idiom are interacting is off a little.

@84104 I'm all sorts of "off a little". That's my baseline.

I'm getting complains because we're no longer allowing unencrypted IMAP or POP3. So far I've manage to avoid telling anyone they're an idiot.

@84104 sounds par for the course...

@84104 IT'S NOT 1996 ANYMORE. WHAT ARE YOU? SIMPLE?

@MattBear The best are the ones with phones. Unencrypted radio waves are super secure guys. <_< >_>

8:03 PM
is the only appropriate response to such complaints

@mfinni god... I would love to say that lol

might as well re-enable those telnet to ssh gateways
that will help

@84104 I think most cell phones are encrypted now (though very weakly)?

@voretaq7 I'm disappointed. Nobody's told me to STFU yet on my meta post.

@Magellan I can tell you to STFU. Link?

Q: How to handle "Good Subjective" questions

MagellanThe recent discussion around the WebServer Benchmarks question has me thinking. This question poses a generally useful query that doesn't have one true answer. Part of our mission is to understand the usefulness of "Good Subjective" questions to the rest of the community. Our current "opinion-...

Anybody here know if there is an iphone simulator for Windows? Not the ones online for testing apps/sites. I don't use an iphone but some of our users do and when they call me for things like "my email isn't syncing" I'd like to be able to walk through the menus with them somehow without sounding like I'm searching google to find screen images.

@TheCleaner There's an iPhone simulator for OS X, but not for Windows.

@TheCleaner in a way, yes, you can use one of those services that allows you to test iphone software over the tubernets.
rent an iPhone by the hour, as it were

This interactiveiphone.com is more like what I'm after but the thing barely works.

let me offer a less popular option: buy an ipod touch, which is very similar and much cheaper

8:23 PM
@RyJones Wrong. Have the company buy it.

@MichaelHampton well, whatever. Buy a stolen iPhone on craigslist and there you go

@84104 I haven't done unencrypted IMAP or POP3 in years.

@MichaelHampton yeah. That's one of the reasons that job[-1] was on macbooks. Only way the devs could unit test, really.

at Microsoft, we rented access to a phone testing lab that used, basically, webcams and shit to let us test phones we didn't own
it worked really well, but it was expensive

Let's say you have a user policy that all short usernames (samaccountname for example) should be the first two letters of the forename, and the first two letters of the last name.. Would you be following that rule for "Anne Allison"?

8:29 PM
sure
I'd add an account note "Beads" and be done with it
3

poor anne

@pauska Oh absolutely. Can't change policy just because one person's anal.

@pauska Would you follow it if the naming policy is "first initial + last name" and you had a Beatrice Iznitch working for you? :-)

such policies are dumb as they lead to conflict

@pauska yes, unless the person objects.

8:36 PM
@pauska what happens when Andy Albright starts? Does he get anal2?

hah :)
Well, this proves that username policies are just about impossible to implement without getting some kind of conflict at some point

@pauska Such naming policies need a provision for the next person with the exact same name and need a (long) list of names that simply aren't allowed.

that's actually a strange naming policy.

Ours right now is the first letter of the forname + the first two available letters in the surname
so in the case of Anne Allison and Andy Albright it would be anne = aal, andy = aab
if aal and aab is free

Simple naming policy. Give them E (for employee) + their employee ID #. So e9408 is somebody. Security through obscurity AND no conflicts ever!

8:38 PM
@TheCleaner we have that only in email addresses. Our new sysadmin has address peter.<redacted>2@booking.com as someone with the eact same name was already hired

tedious work, since we have to check every time, but it works

your name policy should pay attention to that

there's also one about date/time
and our main finance programmer is building one about currency

> People’s names do not change.
ugh we have someone here who's been around for ~20 years, been married 3 times, still has her original username.

@DennisKaarsemaker when this occurs the HR software that IT developed simply rejects the job applicant if they have the same first and last name of someone already working here. Not our fault your family isn't unique enough.

8:41 PM
:)

I wonder if a name of "nil" or "null" would cause problems
less obvious than bobby tables

I need a hug. Any donors?

@pauska Oh, hey, turns out our list of over 200 excluded names from the automatic username generator didn't have 'anal' in the list.
2

@Tanner we don't change the samaccountname, but they do get a new UPN if their primary email add changes

@RyJones Yes. Yes it will. Been there, done that. Poor Amanda Null.

8:43 PM
@freiheit happy to help

> select count(*) from Staff where email like '%2%';
+----------+

> select count(*) from Staff where email like '%3%';

so we even have 13 'triplets'

@DennisKaarsemaker how big is your company? are these all John Smiths?
if there's a Dennis.Kaarsemaker4@ I'm falling over

6.5k people
there are no 4's yet :)
but the triplets are really common names

8:47 PM
BREAKING: @NASAVoyager reaches #interstellar space. Watch live now: http://ustream.tv/NASAJPL2 http://t.co/Prf33uQkzi

@DennisKaarsemaker I just did an ldap search and came up with "smith17". (we generate starting with surname, then try adding characters from given name, then finally numbers...)

(we can also argue about whether it's really in "interstellar space" until it clears the Oort cloud - the wonderful thing about new frontiers is nobody quite knows where they are :P)

loginname for us are first letter of first name + surname
when conflicting, use more letters from first name

just give everyone a god damn guid

@DennisKaarsemaker What about "when obscene"?

8:48 PM
so i am dkaarsemaker, my evil twin would be dekaarsemaker and the third denkaarsemaker

@voretaq7 is that the date of the press release - the bbc article says 25th Aug
> Data gathered by the Plasma Wave Science (PWS) instrument on Voyager has now prompted the team to announce the exit occurred on 25 August 2012.

"Charles Untz"

@voretaq7 all autogenerated, so used until user and/or HR complains.

@Iain I was just going by the announcement, I've had actual work so I haven't had a chance to read the press release. Feel free to fix the room topic :-)

@RyJones Welcome aboard, dc46c17c-59c6-102e-8f59-67252a8896b2.

8:50 PM
@84104 NO DASHES IN USERNAMES! SMACK

@voretaq7 just wanted to check

@voretaq7 Why not?

@DennisKaarsemaker What if the autogenerated comes up on something special to a system (null, admin, root, con, sys, etc)?

Not that I think we have any.

@84104 because it fucks up email to have a dash in the user part
(much like plus signs, dashes are treated "special" by a lot of MTAs)

8:51 PM
room topic changed to The Comms Room: This is *NOT a place for 'Live Support', ask on the main site. // 5 Sept 1977 Voyager 1 was launched from Cape Canaveral; on 25th August 2013 it officially entered interstellar space. [markdown-ate-my-baby] [pwned-by-a-wild-markdown]*

@voretaq7 "Special" MTAs. -_-

@voretaq7 Don't use that MTA. It's bad.

@84104 sendmail and whatever gmail uses are "special"?

@freiheit any existing username (including system user names) are not allowed

(gmail also does Bad Things to . which I strongly disapprove of)

8:52 PM
and the most offensive username we have in ldap right now is mnagios :)

+ acceptable
- Slightly offensive
. OMG WHAT THE MOTHERFUCK IS WRONG WITH YOU?

@voretaq7 Gmail only does weird things to its own addresses. What does sendmail do to dashes?

@84104 By default, absolutely nothing.

@DennisKaarsemaker I was thinking more reserved words... I understand AD doesn't like con, com1, lpt1, sys, etc...

@pauska I tried to push something like that through and then offer employees a more friendly name that forwarded to the esoteric. "Too much work" as if I couldn't have easily automated that too.....

8:54 PM
But mine is configured to treat them like a + because EVERY FUCKING IDIOT THAT REFUSED TO READ THE SMTP SPECIFICATION says + can't occur in an email address

@freiheit as long as it errors out when trying to create that username, there's no problem. The user just won't get pain until we manually fix the account :)

@voretaq7 yet you're still being an ass for doing that to your usernames.

@voretaq7 Then screw you monkey, I'm still allowing dashes. If Hotmail can be okay with them, then so can I.

@Magellan 1: "Everyone else is doing it" ; 2: It's my user part and I can do whatever the fuck I damn well please as long as it doesn't contain an @ symbol :-)

From an email exchange recently:
"I had been in contact with (Mrs. MikeyB) via email for a little while, but my last few attempts to reach her have been unsuccessful."
Her name and email: Firstname Cummer <firstnamecummer@yahoo.ca>
My reaction: "Oh. Poor her. I bet spam filters LOVE her."

8:58 PM
Pretty spiffy
Ethernet Emergency Repair Kit Broken Ethernet cable can now be easily and professionally repaired without special tools or bulky connectors. The three part kit uses 8 color coded insulation displacement terminals that will quickly splice Ethernet cable from Cat 5 to Cat 6A and maintain its performance. Its also compact, water-proof, and rugged

@voretaq7 While you're not incorrect, if it breaks a business process for one of your consumers, what good are you effectively doing?

@Magellan and 3: Make everyone fix their goddamn registration forms to accept plus addresses like the SMTP specification says to and I won't have to do Bad Things to filter my spam.

@voretaq7 I think ,, ", < or > would be really painful, too.

@voretaq7 I see your cane's here on the ground, old man. Would you like me to bring it to you or just toss it over the fence back onto the lawn?

8:59 PM
@TheCleaner That's a pretty nifty splicer

@freiheit yes but I could use those for local delivery if I wanted to be a real prick.
@Magellan I'd like to require a test before people are allowed on the internet. Can you and your associates arrange that for me Mr. Morden?

@voretaq7 I was saying that when you were still in elementary, old man. =)

@Magellan I was in High School when B5 was on the air, you geezer :P

Let's be clear here: "the local-part MUST be interpreted and assigned semantics only by the host specified in the domain part of the address"
If you can't follow the spec, get off the Internet.

@voretaq7 I'd quit watching television by the time that show came out. Too busy working and dating.

9:04 PM
I would support the idea of tests before people were allowed to connect anything to the internet, to be honest.
The trouble with Microsoft and the various Linux distros coming with web or email server systems that are so simple an idiot can configure them generally results in, well, an idiot doing the configuration.
2

@Magellan I don't watch television anymore. I stream the 3 good shows that exist at any given time and watch them without commercials.
@RobM I think the trouble is idiots did the stock configurations...

@voretaq7 I don't even bother with anything since Galactica finished. I think I watched more television in airport terminals this winter than I had in the previous two years combined.

@Magellan I'll be watching Arrow and hoping they don't ruin it
It survived Season 1 with a decent plot & story arc. I would hate to only watch it for the hot guys from now on...

@voretaq7 never heard of it.
I also don't listen to commercial radio anymore either. Just KEXP

@Magellan WBAI is imploding, so I basically don't listen to radio at all anymore
I refuse to pay for "satellite radio"

9:12 PM
@voretaq7 That's a shame. I was wondering why they didn't partner with KEXP anymore.

@Magellan yeah, gross mismanagement, fiscal malfeasance, and basically the station can't meet its bills right now. It's 50/50 whether the Pacifica foundation just sells the license at this point honestly.

@MikeyB imagine dealing with a lot of chinese people, where dong and wong are normal surnames...

@voretaq7 you may have something there too

@voretaq7 Did you say sock configurations?
Oh, you didn't. Never mind.

@RobM ?

9:26 PM
I think the trouble is idiots did the stock configurations...
@PauskaSock we know you're the only...thing... for the job when it comes to sock configuration

Google, I salute you in explaining to me when to use i.e. vs. e.g.

I need MORE HP ProLiant serverfault questions!!!!

@ewwhite So ask one!

(and hey, we just had another hardware discussion at work)

@ewwhite "why does HP suck so much?"

9:29 PM
@DennisKaarsemaker what would YOU prefer?

BEER TIME, GENTLEFOLK

or "Who don't proliant servers come with floppy drives anymore?"

@ewwhite Acer.
:-)

@ewwhite all hardware sucks.

9:30 PM
@DennisKaarsemaker Nuh uh.
@DennisKaarsemaker hater. Go enjoy Seattle... or something

@ewwhite everyone knows IBM xSeries > *.Proliant :)

@TheCleaner I never found IBM to be that great...

@ewwhite oh I am.

but I can admit that I've never had IBM hardware issues.

We have an office IN THE CLOUD!

9:33 PM
@ewwhite - I'm still parsing through your devops question and the answers. Glad it wasn't closed tbh.

@TheCleaner Thank you. I try to give back... er, I mean, since you all do my job for me.
4

@DennisKaarsemaker And the other half of the year, your office is above the cloud deck.

@ewwhite I see a Director level job in your future!

@TheCleaner naw, I'm too scatterbrained.

9:40 PM
@Magellan I was hoping to witness that
but the skyview deck opens only at 10
which was in the clouds today, not above

@DennisKaarsemaker Probably not going to happen this year. Our weather the past couple years has been way too good for that. Our summer weather didn't end until late October last year.

@FalconMomot Thanks. I really didn't feel like cleaning up that shitty edit.

@MichaelHampton No problem; it was horrid.

Does my Meta question actually come across as "this specific worthiness of this question invalidates the close wording" or are some people just not reading the whole thing.
I'll open that to the floor

@Magellan You'd be better off not mentioning specific questions probably
when posting on Meta treat the community like we're users :)

9:48 PM
Sometimes I read a question...start to answer...then back off and say "screw it...this will only be a waste of time and energy."

@TheCleaner I really like the 'novice question' close reason. Best thing since sliced bread.

god im tired of ignorance and laziness...

@TheCleaner that...avatar.

@Cole yeah it freaked me out...

bro-grammer, yes?

9:51 PM
@Magellan lol exactly.
I guess if he complains about the downvote I can say "Deal with it"

@MichaelHampton I should've shoved in a quick answer pionting him to the cricket book that voretaq linked to earlier.

-4 chuck delete votes at it now :)

10:04 PM
@TheCleaner Shuck it Trebek. Shuck it long and Shuck it hard.

We need more 20K users. @Wesley, go buy a bike..I mean, get a couple thousand more rep

Really enjoyed this video

Yep, 37 with 10 being mods and 8 or so being less active is a small population

@MichaelHampton he'll hit 40k before buying a bike

10:24 PM
Hi
how I can send private message to a member?

@barznjy You don't.

@barznjy Last I checked, there is no such functionality for users to send messages to users.

sometimes I have question, that need some detail
I think it is better to ask it personally

@barznjy that's what chat rooms for are. They're public, and there's documentation on how to use them.

not in the general qustions

10:26 PM
@barznjy Put a comment on their answer or question.

but you can get the right person in the chat room
is it allowed to ask the member for his personal email address?

@barznjy Please note the first sentence in the room topic on the upper right of this window. This is NOT a place for 'Live Support'

sorry, I meant can't
what is comms stands for?

Evenin' @RyJones

this would make an excellent avatar in this sea of cats (sfw): i.imgur.com/IIctNxU.jpg
@Magellan salut, hope all is well
@barznjy communication

10:30 PM
@RyJones yeah, have a phone screen tomorrow with one of the UW programs.

@Magellan good. hope it goes well.

have you made any simulation for the communication system by Mathematica?

@RyJones Shocked me out of my shoes. Was 4 days between applying and getting a response, including a weekend. Fastest response I've ever seen out of them by a factor 20.

@barznjy This is not a chat about Mathematica. I think you are lost :)

@Magellan uh, wow, that is fast
@barznjy this is a room about kitten photos, beer, and system administration. Ordered list, too

10:32 PM
I'm really lost
research made me lost, .....
thanks mate
have a good night

well, there may be a mathmatica chat room around here

thanks
bye

@RyJones oh god... and people call us nerds

oh, you're already over there

theres a chat for math?

10:35 PM
there is
and he was over there for 10 minutes before he was here, so not sure why he was here

@RyJones do they hang out, solving equations and shit?

@MattBear not sure, I'm going to observe for a while and see if any differentiation happens

@RyJones im scared to look... my brains already on overload, a little more and it could blow!
its like a P233 overclocked to 5ghz... not too stable

Understood

@Cole Can't wait for @ewwhite to watch this video and comment on it.

10:39 PM
@Magellan I should stop by home and get some toys to play with at Man Night, but I don't know what to grab
I don't have anything that is a "20"

@RyJones I don't have a cat avatar anymore :)

@DennisKaarsemaker who the heck are you? I don't recognize you at all.
all I do all day is cherry picks for git
I need one of those manlifts for the orchard
