6:00 PM
a what?

@TheCleaner . . . why work out during lunch?
that seems terrible.

@pauska work out of the day I believe? @TheCleaner you crossfit?

@voretaq7 - gym is right down the street, and a bunch of guys I know go there at lunch. @Cole - yeah for about 5 years now.

@TheCleaner I've thought about it.
Worried about stretching my scars still.
but I really want to put on some muscle

I love it...but it never gets easier IMO. Course I do it simply to stay in shape...versus compete/look awesome.

6:04 PM
@TheCleaner I've seen people really drop weight.
I've lost ~40lbs - put on 5-7lbs since surgery, have another 40-50lbs to go though
Yes, I was 100lbs over weight now only 40ish ;)

I've been starting on one of those couch to 5k programs

Well depends, 120 may make me look sickly now.
@NathanC I need to do that.
140-150 w/ muscle would probably be okay though

of course, it's been raining all week -.-

Yeah...depends on your frame. For me, my heaviest was 175...so sitting at 165 is comfortable. I've seen guys lose 50lbs quick on Crossfit, but only if they eat right. Most end up paleo for a while. We start our marathon training in July so we'll only be doing Crossfit twice a week at that point.

I went from a size 42 pants to 38, close to a 36

6:06 PM
@Cole I'm 150 and 6'1...i've been the same weight since I was 18 lol

@TheCleaner Yeah, that's how I lost the 40 :P

Crossfit is entirely too much "bro mentality" for me
I think I'll just stick to trail running and climbing up dangerous rocks.

@voretaq7 you love bros.
@voretaq7 you're a bro-ho

@Cole not really, I made that mistake back in college. They're really lousy in bed.

@voretaq7 that's what I've heard

6:08 PM
Not with us...it all depends on the gym/box. Some are definitely that way...ours is a bunch of 30 and 40 somethings with families, so it's not that way.

I did p90x for a while

@TheCleaner Yeah. I live on Long Island.
Gyms here are like a frathouse exploded all over the weight room.

Crossfit is just so expensive

work subsidizes a gym membership for us, so it isn't bad for me.

weee Solarwinds sent me a $25 Amazon gift card

6:12 PM
@Cole Gotta save up for that drum of lube.
2

@WesleyDavid every penny counts!
I really want this, so I'll probably use the GC to buy it:

@Cole I got one from Spiceworks for trying out scalextreme (basically *nix butt monitoring)
:p

@NathanC sweet.

So, I think it's safe to say I'll end up trying a different cable for this. I can't find any information anywhere.

@NathanC they're not terribly expensive. Send the other one back as defective :P

6:18 PM
@Cole Why are you going to buy the book?

Heh, it's been around for a while so that won't happen. Weirdly enough the cable works fine in Windows

@Travis because I like books.

@Cole I didn't even need to read the book and now I know you like books! It works :)

@Travis haha
I just find social engineering fascinating
I listened to a podcast with the author of the book on PacketPushers. Cool stuff, very smart guy.

@Cole This is Travis with AT&T. We're trying to verify your account. Could you give me your full name. Mmhmm. Ok. Can you verify your mailing address. Mmmhmm..great! Now what password do you use to log in to your e-mail? Really. That's a great password. You're welcome. We will briefly have you...........

6:20 PM
@Travis It's crazy how many people will fall for it

Yep

@cole - check out ted talks...you sound like you'd like those too...good stuff

@TheCleaner yeah I love ted talks
I really find anything doing with human behavior/psychology fascinating. There's just so much we don't know about the brain.

I used to love learning...but then Call of Duty came out.

@TheCleaner Halo's my vice.
and boobs.

6:26 PM
@Cole arguibly, psychology is more about the mind (than the brain)

Someone say lizard love?

Getting real sick and tired of fucking Powershell bugs

@RyanRies PUNCH THEM IN THE FACE

@RyanRies Don't worry, they'll be fixed in Windows 2017.

I'm just glad the developers are at least using the training wheels of managed code. If they'd written this shit in a native language it'd probably BSOD my machine every time I try to run a script

6:30 PM
@Travis BROHUG

@ewwhite Gotta say, iLO4 is pretty hawt.
@pauska rubs on leg
<_<

sigh Cat killed one of the power strips, a wall outlet, and a USB drive. Playing with a wire cat dancer on the floor and wedged it under a wall wart and bridged the two terminals on the power supply for my external USB drive.
Complete with Zap, Sparks, and Smoke.
Thankfully, the phone screen I had right before that episode went really well.

telnet towel.blinkenlights.nl so freaking cool

@WesleyDavid NOTQUITERIGHTBROHUG

@pauska BROLICK

6:36 PM
@Adrian You could say that was rather ...shocking?

Well, the IPv6 version is exactly the same as the IPv4 one.

The difference is in the visitors...

hunter2 - doesnt look like stars to me

@NathanC Yes, quite so.

@BenjaminGruenbaum no, you see your password, the rest of us see stars :)
watch: ********************************

you can go hunter2 my hunter2-ing hunter2. haha, does that look funny to you?

6:41 PM
we really need a new channel topic huh? How long has this one been up>

@voretaq7 yes.

@voretaq7 Months.

@Cole Tada! Social engineering at its finest...

Love how we're naming single servers that do DHCP/local DNS as CORPDC-<location>
THEY'RE NOT DOMAIN CONTROLLERS YOU FUCKTARDS.

@BenjaminGruenbaum Can you see my password?: **********

6:43 PM
@BenjaminGruenbaum Are those stars your password, or masked profanity?

@voretaq7 :~)

@MichaelHampton Yes.

@Cole DC stands for "Domain Computer"!

DC stands for "DHCP and DNS Computer!"

6:45 PM
@NathanC ! What fuckery is this? Ubuntu LiveCD you lazy fucker! CRACK WHIP
@ChrisS the channel topics should probably be PG, not PG-13 :P
(otherwise I'd just go for "Mrs. Slocombe's Pussy" references.)

@WesleyDavid apparently
DC stands for I WORK WITH RETARDS!

@MichaelHampton I think @BenjaminGruenbaum may need to move to the higher level chat..."Root Access"

@WesleyDavid I thought it stood for "Direct Current" myself...

@ChrisS I totally stole that by the way:
in JavaScript on Stack Overflow Chat, 7 mins ago, by Benjamin Gruenbaum
> Capitalization is the difference between "I had to help my uncle Jack off a horse.." and "I had to help my uncle jack off a horse.."

The word "of" is also required in the first example, in between "of" and "a".
But that takes away from the lol

6:56 PM
room topic changed to The Comms Room: This is *NOT a place for 'Live Support', ask on the main site. // You are likely to be eaten by a grue. [markdown-ate-my-baby] [pwned-by-a-wild-markdown]*
Choosing between a Panasonic BD drive and a Sony Optiarc - which would you choose?

People use bluray outside of a PS3?

I've never even seen a Blu-Ray disc. Though I'm told they're out there somewhere.

@MDMarra Videos come on them

Who buys videos?!

@MichaelHampton @MDMarra Extended family has a lot of them

7:00 PM
@MDMarra People's parents, apparently.

Netflix/hulu/iTunes rent/Redbox!
Althought when I go to redbox, I do need something to play it in

Also useful for "time shifting" Netflix. =]

thats what the PS3 is for

internet, y u so slow
both spotify and youtube takes AGES to buffer here :(
akamai?

@pauska Doesn't seem very smart to me...

7:08 PM
@WesleyDavid This is what I"m sayin'! You understand!

@ewwhite Also, I went from "halp my SmartArray is broked!" to "Yessir, your replacement array card is being shipped today on Friday and will arrive on Monday" in under 24 hours
@ewwhite Baked in support into iLO 4 is hawwwt

@voretaq7 It's worth noting that I was responding to Justin, not you.

FuckI hate AWS
why do people use this horse shit
4

@ScottPack You don't want to vampire tap dat ass?

@WesleyDavid this ain't Supermicro!

7:15 PM
@JoelESalas Because they've been around forever and were first to market.

@MichaelHampton Yeah ;_;

@JoelESalas 1 Year of Micro instance and a ton of other stuff for free... Like a Cocaine dealer, the first hit is free.

So get the hell off of Amazon. It's not like there's a shortage of other providers.

@MichaelHampton I have my marching orders

@greggleventhal I've removed your comment on serverfault.com/q/515870/32986 - discussions of voting and topicality do not belong on the main site. If you would like you can discuss those things in chat or on Meta, but you must do so without resorting to name-calling.

Q: Securing mod_php for WAMP vhosts?

Rolf DerghamI've setup a web server for production use. The OS is Windows Server, and it runs Apache 2.0 and PHP 5.3 as an apache module (and MySQL too...). It is used to host several virtual hosts (Apache vhosts) belonging to different customers. At this point PHP is running as the system user. In the futu...

Oh god, a production Apache (2.0) on Windows question
Can't close it because there's no "awful idea" option

And I'm too busy to explain why it's an awful idea. I also don't hate him enough to point him at cPanel.

@MDMarra "bad idea" isn't a valid close reason
"you're doing it wrong" is a valid answer though.

not worth it

We already have a "doing it wrong" answer.

Q: Why not use a WAMP stack?

matangI recently had a talk with some experienced people and they suggested to me not to use a WAMP stack, and instead install apache, mysql and php separately. I don't understand why they have suggested this, though, so can anyone tell me? Is there a particular disadvantage of WAMP, or a particular ...

but that addresses why not to use a package
not why you shouldn't put apache on windows

7:27 PM

A: Why not use a WAMP stack?

MDMarraFirst of all, apache, php, and MySQL are all *nix applications ported to Windows. It's usually preferred to run tools on their native platforms in production environments. Secondly, pre-configured *AMP packages generally have extremely vulnerable configurations out of the box. Most packages shi...

...oh
My answer
how about that

7:39 PM
Heh, WIMP stack, never heard that one
Why can't I select a large block of text and comment/uncomment the whole block at once with the Powershell ISE, damnit

you don't use block comments?

7:56 PM
You should recommend Windows, IIS MySQL, PHP

@ScottPack s/MySQL/mariadb

@MDMarra TokyoDB #BroOps #Creatine #SLJDHLDJFGH;SDFGHJK

You're losing it, cat.

better yet yaws/noSQL/erlang hides

8:15 PM
@MDMarra ORACLE FOR LYFE

Oracle, more like Bore-acle, amirite?

Obstacle

So how goes the job search, Scotty?
Or is that not a chat appropriate topic?

More like "It'll keep you up until 4AM while you troubleshoot obscure and archaic issues" ... acle.

@ScottPack RHEL 7 will replace MySQL with MariaDB

8:19 PM
@MichaelHampton That's a true statement.

Thinking about switching one system now and seeing how it does.

What do you guys use for RSS

@RyanRies Akregator

Feedly

I just add all my feeds to this chatroom.

8:24 PM
+1 for Feedly

@RyanRies liferea

I was getting ready to write my own just for the hell of it, then got super-annoyed when I realized that there are at least 3 totally different formats and I did not want to write all those code paths

@DennisKaarsemaker I used that too, before I switched to KDE.

8:36 PM
So if I were to write that one of my servers is down because of a hardware issue, would that be a shock to anyone?

deets, man. spill the deets

@ewwhite no, it'd be a shock if one of your servers were up
:P

@MDMarra I'm chillin' at lunch... and I check my office chat to see that everything is on fire...
a database server failed for a new client
18 hours after deployment

Overheating CPU #2
Supermicro...

8:43 PM
And nobody got the SNMP traps because....

I mean, seriously...

Does your company not even do postmortems?

@MichaelHampton because they're not monitoring the IPMI... and the OS doesn't seem to have hooks for SNMP like an OpenManage or HP Insight-equipped system would.

@MichaelHampton Those bum everyone out.

@JoelESalas Only if you don't actually learn anything from them.

8:45 PM
the same cpu has been complaining since the beginning... we had already replaced all of the memory, the chassis and the procs prior to go-live. Either they screwed up which proc or the heatsink itself sucks.... or maybe airflow...
so they put this in production why?

@ewwhite Your coworkers are utter morons?

why wasn't that box burned in before deployed? jesus edmund, you get all these weird jobs

this is a new server!!

even if it's a brand new HP DL9something you still burn it in with test suites for at least a few days..

@pauska I don't think it's necessarily a requirement to burn hardware-in.

8:46 PM
@ewwhite burn in, as in to check that nothing is DOA

I mean, this box has been around 4-weeks... and it had problems, so they swapped all of the parts out.

They knew the damn thing was overheating before they put it in production. Irresponsible at best.

Exactly.

a simple SuperPI loop would have burned that CPU..

so the box is open and on a workbench... thermal paste all there, fans all work...
but it's embarrassing.

8:48 PM
do these customers demand physical standalone boxes?

@pauska this is a private cloud customer, so they have an ESX cluster... but the DBs are physical
it's a MySQL cluster, so all failed over to a slave DB server.
Hmm, it's a news website.
@MDMarra I have work for you, though

anything good?

@MDMarra always!
Fix my Domain Controller!

which one

migrate to contoso.com.local

8:56 PM
@ewwhite in soviet russia, domain controls you!

@MDMarra The garlic company.

whats wrong with it

garlic.mdmarra.local

yeah, you can do that once...

Q: Windows 2008 DHCP service fails - "...failed to see a directory server for authorization."

ewwhiteI have a small environment running Windows 2008 R2 where the DHCP service on the domain controller fails every two weeks. The most-visible error is Event ID 1059 and the Event Viewer message is: "The DHCP service failed to see a directory server for authorization." The setup features two ...

jesus christ how have you not fixed that yet

@MDMarra I even demoted and promoted it
and added a new DC to the mix.
log in. Fix it?
Pleeeeeeze?
See, I'm waving $100 bills at @MDMarra and he refuses to halp!

Guess who can drive a train now?

@Basil ...the ATO computer?
:-)

@Basil Excellent! Certified?

9:13 PM
@voretaq7 Is it bad that I don't know what that is?
@ewwhite I have what amounts to a learner's permit. I need to get out there and do 16 trips, but essentially, yeah, certified :)

nice
my childhood dream...

Automatic Train Operation (ATO) is an operational safety enhancement device used to help automate operations of trains. Mainly, it is used on automated guideway transits and subways which are easier to ensure safety of humans. Most systems elect to maintain a driver (train operator) to mitigate risks associated with failures or emergencies. Many modern systems are linked with Automatic Train Control (ATC) and in many cases Automatic Train Protection (ATP) where normal signaller operations such as route setting and train regulation are carried out by the system. The ATO and ATC/ATP systems...

@voretaq7 yeah, we don't use that.

ATO (Automatic Train Operation) is how the MTA is going to try to get away with OPTO (One Person Train Operation) in the NYC Subway system -- because that guy in the middle of the train who operates the doors is clearly redundant and not at all important for things like making sure people aren't being dragged because they're stupid...

9:16 PM
@ewwhite I can look at it tonight. Email me credentials/VPN/etc

This is basically what the engineer sees:

I've never seen a question so packed full of guesses as answers @ewwhite

@RyanRies and it remains an unsolved mystery.
I mean, I'm a sysadmin n00b, so I just clicked the pretty buttons and installed Windows. I didn't know there was more to it.

@Basil Is your alerter a dinky little bell? :)
@ewwhite There's not. It's windows. :)

@ewwhite Sure there's more. A whole different set of pretty buttons to click.

@MichaelHampton they're not different, they're just touchscreen styled. Windows 8 FTW?

@ewwwhite Well, I'm just guessing too, but the first thing I'd do is set the primary DNS on DC01 to DC02, and vice versa, 127.0.0.1 as secondary DNS. You mention that rebooting fixes it for ~2 weeks... that time frame sounds a bit to me like DNS SRV record scavenging. I wonder if restarting the netlogon service also fixes it as opposed to a full reboot.

9:27 PM
@RyanRies I had DNS set the @MDMarra way.
so that's in place

I mention that because netlogon registers the SRV records for the DC

Also make sure the DHCP Client service hasn't been disabled - even though it's actually a server, the DHCP Client service does extra stuff that isn't obvious

@RyanRies I don't think it has

@RyanRies the behavior of record registration quietly changed in 2008 R2. DNSClient does it now (as you'd expect)

9:33 PM
@MDMarra shocking.

Welp looks like it's that time

DHCPClient used to do it

Windows 7

Beer O'clock

DNS Client instead of DHCP Service may be registering updates
We've had multiple reports that the DNSClient service, since Windows Vista (including Windows Server 2008, 2008 R2, and Windows 7) is actually registering the records for clients, even in a DHCP use situation. This is different from how it was done in Windows XP and Windows Server 2003. I have logged a documentation bug on this as well as contacted the responsible writer. Until this is resolved in the document, I will relay what has been brought in conflict with the information above:
In the comments from an MSFT employee

@Cole If someone gets me smarties I'll put them on the gecko.
He's generally tolerant of such things.

Wow, he is a big gecko.
