@MilesErickson I had one guy talk a place up for like 45 minutes but wouldnt give me the name, when he finally got around to it I told him that I already applied direct
when you read a job description you can tell if its a recruiter or not fairly easily... if it sounds like a bunch of marketing BS job = recruiter
@MDMarra i dont see anything there
I don't have a mac handy. you're on your own
:)
@voretaq7 ideas?
Hmm.
19:03
@David Ditch OS X?
@r.tanner.f no can do!
Only settings I can find that would change the sort.. cl.ly/image/1c331M0G1802
It's at thje bottom
Mine is a-z
ignore the red circle, it's from the google image i just yanked
@r.tanner.f But it's so nice!
19:06
@MilesErickson That's my read on it too, then again, that's also what the majority of the job posting for my area look like. DOE, negotiable, just plain empty... makes my mind boggle, but if you remove the idea that HR departments actually do anything useful or resembling "work," it becomes much easier to parse and understand.
@MDMarra Google image search the term "yanked" at work. I dare you.
nope
SafeSearch Off
@MDMarra nope.jpg
safeSearch ----> astronomical
Got it! Had to set "Arrange By:" to None, and "Sort by:" to Name
stupid OS X
19:09
@David I think I peaked last hour and am finally coming down.
"Your mom's on google image search." "No she's not!" "Well not with the safesearch on she's not."
5
@RyanRies Listen Joey, you keep my mom out of this.
@MDMarra I can't find your face on Google Image search unless I choose "Size: X-Large"
Just a little 2008-era humor to bring in the new year
In devops we are face fiscal cliff every year when Oracle license is up for renew.

19:11
@RyanRies You're not high, get back to work.
@WesleyDavid After the lunch that I just had, you're probably right
@MDMarra Devops and Oracle? Poseur. The true devops use flat files and parse it with ruby file.open
Access databases for life!
@MDMarra I managed to figure out how to eat a peanut butter and jelly sandwich just now.
Can anyone else get to my blog?
Oh nice, Cloudflare took a crap on me.
getting nginx bad gateway errors
@WesleyDavid I had a plantain and cotija arepa
19:15
I just got a Cleveland Steamer from Cloudflare.
@WesleyDavid It exploded under the burden of having to host my guest post
@WesleyDavid lol ok
@WesleyDavid It's up for me
@MDMarra Well it did get a lot of favorites on Twitter.
Your blog, that is
19:16
@RyanRies No honey, I have a headache.
@WesleyDavid orly
@RyanRies Fancypants. Real devOPS DBAs use Excel for all their database needs.
@HopelessN00b nosql
@WesleyDavid Correct, there is no SQL code in Excel. :p
I should write a "SQL" server in Powershell that writes to Excel spreadsheets... I could make tens!
19:18
@HopelessN00b I will kill somebody
@JeffFerland Please tell me it's someone where I work.
You wanna see our 250 meg .xlsx, with Pivot Tables? Hundred and hundreds of Pivot Tables? It's yummy!
Helping unemployment: hiring the "right" DevOps guy can create 2 additional jobs a year!
@RyanRies can't you already nativly do excel things in ps by loading the right magic using .net?
@HopelessN00b Also known as every day that I worked in a CPA firm.
@MDMarra 8 favorites so far: twitter.com/Nonapeptide/status/286432754407727104 You hoodrich, yo.
19:21
@JeffFerland Yeah, but I think that to help unemployment you need to create jobs that are preferable to suicide.
@MDMarra Yes but it's COM instead of .net
@WesleyDavid Oohhh jeff hicks
Sounds familiar
How do I know that name
@HopelessN00b Well, if you focus purely on the statistics of it, probably not. That means even more people will come out of the job search pool.
@MDMarra PowerShell MVP
19:24
@JeffFerland Well, lucky for me, every place I've worked in the last decade has had an accounting department, so all the fun of working for a CPA firm, at reduced pay!
@MDMarra Also written lots of PS books. Helped Don Jones write the month of lunches book
And speaking of killing people for improper DB usage, what the hell do you make of this gem?

Q: Multiple mssql databases for different users

ThomasI'm working on a project that will ideally have one seperate (mssql) database for each root user (root user for my project, not actual database root user). I have automated the process of copying this database, but I was wondering how I should maintain these databases. Is this method the way to ...

Jesus
I wish SQL Server Management Studio had Clippy in it just for guys like that, the little paper clip would pop up in the corner and be all "Hi! It looks like you're trying to be a dumbass!"

@RyanRies sure would help
@RyanRies Actually, the version of Clippy I use does have something very much like that.
19:31
@HopelessN00b link fail
@RyanRies OHAI I HERD U LIEK TABLES? beats user with furniture
@David markdown sucking
@HopelessN00b Suckdown marking.
It's not clear what you're trying to do here, but it seems pretty obvious to me that whatever it is, you're doing it wrong. — HopelessN00b 8 secs ago
Sweet, final grades are in for last semester. 3.77 GPA!
not too shabby
19:35
Yo dawg, I herd u like databases, so we put databases in your users so you can use databases while u database
If {GPA >= 2.0,
Then pass }
lol
^^How I determined if my GPA was good or not.^^
@David You try too hard or your classes are too easy. I got a 3.5 last semester.
@ChrisS most likely the latter. community college.
19:36
Ah. I'm in a masters program. =P
Hmm... I wonder if I should clean up all the stuff I run in the background:
also, generally easy classes as well (mostly GE stuff)
I did the community college thing; smart way to save some cash.
@ChrisS i did the community college thing because my dumb ass didnt do much homework in high school and got rejected from the local state college
19:38
Too much stuff Cat.
Cloudflare's LAX and San Jose DCs are taking an attack, thus my site is spotty.
No word yet on if the DDoS is from an IP.
@David lol; I slacked in high school too, but ACT/SAT scores were good enough to get me into a 4 year school, then I split my time there and the community college.
Looking back on it though; it really doesn't matter much as long as you're slogging your way though it.
@ChrisS i did well on the SAT, but in California they have these requirement they call "A-G", that you needed to have a C or better in all the A-G classes
and i had a few Ds
Ah, no such requirement here.. Good thing too. =]
@ChrisS thankfully, im down to my last semester @ community college, then off to non-local state college
still in CA, just a few hours from home
19:47
@David mrr?
@voretaq7 too slow! got it all figured out
@David Lunch, bitches!
@voretaq7 Bitches love cake!
Right, last time anyone cared about my GPA was longer ago than anyone outside the government cared about my degree. Get a little experience and that's really all that matters.

"Where did you work, what did you do, and are you on any sex offender registries anywhere?"
@WesleyDavid I was just gifted with chocolate for helping someone!
19:57
Confession bear time: Sometimes I tell people to unplug a device and let it sit for a few minutes just so I can have quiet time to think.
@David which school you going to go to?
@MattBear Speak of a bear and one shall appear.
@HopelessN00b In the class I got a "B" in this past semester the teacher asked why I wasn't participating in the Class's Forum. I lost a solid 5% of my grade by avoiding it. I told him the class was full of idiots and the Forum format meant there was no recognition for putting any thought or effort into insightful, informative, or correct posts; and that I would not subject myself to such intellectual torture.
While he appreciated my reasoning he was less than amused that one of the smarter and more informed people in the class was specifically avoiding "sharing" anything with others. I sincerely doubt many in that class would have simply recognized "insightfulness" or "experienced reasoning" just by skimming through the forum, or gleaned even the most mediocre thought on any of the subjects.
@MattBear applied at CSU Chico, Monterey, and Northridge
havent visited any yet, will do in March
@WesleyDavid lol
20:03
Many educational systems have a way of rewarding hard work, even if it's completely misguided.
@David cool, I just graduated from CSU Fresno in august
@MattBear nice, what degree?
Can anyone explain why iTerm2 takes so long to figure out that it can't reach a host
when you switch wifi networks, for example
@David business admin, CIS option
did a study abroad in hong kong over the summer for my last two classes
@MattBear i was going to do that @ CSU Sacramento, but then decided against business admin
looking @ pure CIS, CIT, or CSIT
20:05
@MattBear Wow, that sounds like something fun. How was it?
@David I highly recommend taking at least a few business classes if not a BusAdmin minor.
@ChrisS crowded, and the only edible food was sushi :p
@ChrisS yeah, i think the programs are similar to the business admin ones, they just dont fall under business admin
except the CSIT one seems heavily comp sci focused
@ChrisS but besides that, a great end to my college career
@David Business Admin degree is good for just about anything you want to go into... Because generally you are going to work for a business, and normally you want to move up into an admin level position....
Ha, sounds like an "experience" anyway. I'd like to make it to Asia someday, don't really know where... But Europe and the Middle-East are on my list first I think.
(even though I dont remember jack from school :p)
20:09
@MattBear does anyone? lol
Everyone says that, and then you run into situations where you 'just know something' without realizing that you learned it in school. Or more frequently, you use tactics tangential to school activities, without realizing that you learned that tactic in school without it being explicitly taught.
@ChrisS Hong Kong is not much different from any big US city, its cleaner, and the official language is english
I didn't know that. Learn something everyday...
and is the richest country in the world
This is some appeal to authority bullshit :(

>10% of people there are millionaires, in US$$
He comes in and paraphrases the answer I already gave, instantly gets upvotes just because of who he is.
@RyanRies who is he...?
@RyanRies Well... That happens. FWIW I upvoted your answer. =]
@David One of the architects of Hyper-V
Which is awesome to have him on the site, but I'd like him to provide some of the internals that we're all hungry for, instead of just paraphrasing the answer that a layman like me already gave.
@RyanRies I strongly suspect MS has him on a very short leash and he can't discuss any specific numbers.
20:15
@ChrisS Yeah you're probably right
Though I appreciate the upvotes guys, it warms my heart :)
MS is a really, really weird company internally.. I would never want to work there (even not considering the downward spiral the company is in right now)
are HP hdd's any better then any other enterprise class drives? Meaning, are they worth paying 4x as much for?
@ChrisS I interviewed at MS a couple months ago, but ended up going with an internal promotion at my current company... it does seem like a very strange company though.
@MattBear Depends on which generation server you're talking about.
20:18
Why wouldn't you use HP drives?
The corporate culture is extremely acidic... I'm not sure how they retain any talent as it is.
2.5" or 3.5"?
@MattBear Depends on your definitions of "better" and "worth"
The HP disks are typically Seagate.
20:20
with HP firmware?
but the real issue is that you shouldn't be seeing prices 4x as much
What disk are you looking for?
@MattBear Yeah, all HP (server) HDs come with custom firmware (to my knowledge)
I've only seen Seagate and one other manufacturer, can't remember if it was Toshiba or Hitachi.
300 gb SAS drives, hp drives are over $400, WD are around $130
I'm still staring at a pile of HP disks on my desk..
so 3x as much....
20:22
@MattBear what part number?
300GB 15k RPM 3.5" disks?
416127-B21
@MattBear Those HP drives have 4 hour warranties (if the server their in does). The WD drives offer advanced replacement with shipping from California.
how many?
@MattBear you should really be looking for 516814-B21
im thinking 8... though I've just started looking at prices
@MattBear My guy has them at $150 each new...
20:25
@ewwhite thats more then reasonable
@MattBear Where are you getting a WDC 300GB SAS drive for $130? The cheapest I can find is almost $180. Also, this is a 10K drive, and the HP drive you have spec'd is 15K.
you'll want the part number I provided. it's a 6G versus 3G drive
For enterprise disks, HP-branded is better. For stuff like nearline SAS and SATA, generic is fine.
Same for certain SSD's
@ChrisS the wd was either 10k or 7200, its for DB backups, I dont need a 15k drive
@MattBear So you're looking at a SATA drive then, not SAS?
20:31
evening
@ChrisS SAS
I was considering WD1001FYYG
Must be the 3.5" 7200 1TB SAS Nearline drive.
@MattBear They don't make HP 10k SAS 300GB disks anymore.
@ChrisS If Microsoft was actually serious about retaining talent, they'd offer nut-kicking Balmer as an employee benefit. How that asshat has a job anywhere, doing anything is nothing short of mind-boggling.
only 15k, as of a few years ago
20:33
@HopelessN00b Yep, proud to say I don't own any stock and refuse to buy any while he's on top.
@ewwhite I need to look into bigger drives... or a SAN
@MattBear :) we're getting fragments... what are you looking to do?
@MattBear If you're looking for mass archival storage, the WDC Reds are about the cheapest bank for your buck while being RAID friendly.
You do lose out on guaranteed compatibility and warranty provided by HP. If you want those, HP makes some nearline drives as well.
@ewwhite store a weeks worth of DB backups, I need about 700gb
@ChrisS Amen to that. Does make me wonder what the actual shareholders are thinking (or not), though. Anyone in the world could do a better job as CEO by just not showing up to work, and he continues to not be voted out. :/
20:35
@MattBear on what type of server?
@MattBear I have an external hard drive you could borrow... :p
proliant dl370 g6
@MattBear How is it configured? e.g. how many bays?
I have one sitting here.
@ewwhite Probably looks just like the one you use for a coffee table.
It's a pretty flexible model.. I've seen them with 24 disks or 14 or 12 or 8...
20:39
@ewwhite I diddnt spec it, and its in another building so I'm not sure on all the details, 2x xeon x5550's, 12gb ram, and one array of 5 x 300gb drives
I smell RAID-5!
Anywho, the server can accommodate 14 x 3.5" disks
so you have plenty of expansion options
@HopelessN00b Ballmer is an idiot. And rude. And generally an asshole.
we have 3 dl370s actually
what I'm planning on doing is virtualizing them, and combining them into an ESXi cluster
20:41
http://www.ubuntu.com/devices/phone

^That'll end well. Hrmph.
will I need another backplane to add more drives?
@RobM Yup, and on every list of CEOs who should have been fired years ago that I've ever read... but still in charge, driving Microsoft into a death spiral. >:/
Yep. He's a wank hammer. And whatever your opinion of Microsoft, there would be a serious impact to the whole industry if they fall off a cliff
Windows 8 is so bad
Take away the GUI and server 2012 is a step in the right direction, but fuck me 8 is awful
and possibly instead of adding drives, adding a SAN into the cluster
20:44
@MattBear Maybe? I don't know what yours looks like :)
@MDMarra Same with Windows 8, in truth. Except for the whole getting rid of the most useful piece of the GUI for reasons unknown/insane, it's actually an improvement over 7.
But with Balmer being in charge and all, it just won't do to have anything that's an unmitigated improvement...
@ewwhite looks familiar lol
There's an 8-disk 2.5" backplane/cage and a 6-disk 3.5" backplane/cage. The cages are $125.
@chriss you know Procurve switches well, right?
20:46
@ewwhite Mostly
5400zl?
Not yet =[
@ewwhite then to answer my own question, yes I do need another backplane, 2.5" or 3.5"
I want to buy the one you've got, but my budget for Networking $0.00 right now. And will be the same next year too.
We've got a stack of Cisco 3750s that I could hock on eBay for darn near the price of switching to a 5400zl.
@HopelessN00b Right, but a bad GUI renders a desktop OS unusable
Server Core 2012 looks juicy
dedupe, ha dhcp, etc etc
20:50
@ChrisS The one at home is being readied for battle.
Oh; good that it's getting some use. An unused switch like that is a sad sight
My question is simple, though. Those CX4 ports are 10GbE. If I add more copper ports, i should probably throw that module into slot B. What happens when you move a module? Does it lose its config?
@MDMarra yeah, Core 2012 is almost sweet. The feature, role and management limitations kind of blunt my enthusiasm for it, but it's definitely an improvement. Of course, if they hit their shit together, they'd use a GUI for what it's useful for in a server, rather than eliminating it, but that's a whole other issue...
@MDMarra ReFS too
@HopelessN00b After the initial config, I rarely log into a server anyway
20:53
ReFS is kinda unexciting IMO
@ewwhite I believe the config sticks with the module so long as you don't power the unit on without the module inserted... Eg, power off, move, power on -> should be fine.
Can't use DFS-R on it, can't use it as a boot disk, other applications are incompatible with it, etc.
@RyanRies Stuff like that needs to take baby steps though
It's been forever since I've moved a module in a ProCurve though, memory is pretty fuzzy. Never in a 5400, though I think they all use the same base OS, or similar anyway.
@MDMarra True. It will grow.
20:54
@MDMarra Ideally, but I still think a GUI should be used to display information (like a dashboard/monitoring system), so if you're going to the effort to design and include a GUI with your server, that's what it should do.
@HopelessN00b task manager doesn't run on core? :D
@MDMarra Calling "task manager" a dashboard or monitoring system in this day and age is like calling Windows 3.1 an OS. :p
Yeah but anything more and they couldnt pimp scom
@MDMarra All the more reason.
@ChrisS you better be right!
21:02
On top of doping myself up like a Big League outfielder, I think I'm coming down with a cold.
@HopelessN00b But it's pretty. =(
@ewwhite I specifically disclaim all liability for anything I have said, implied, or otherwise made anyone believe at any point in time. Also, backup your configurations. =]
@WesleyDavid sounds like fun
@ChrisS BA cup? What's that? I have a BA and I've never of this type of cup you speak of...
@HopelessN00b It's when a girl who's an A cup stuffs to be a B cup.
@WesleyDavid wouldn't that be an AB cup, though?
21:10
@HopelessN00b I went for the optimistic viewpoint first.
Looks like a B, suddenly...
It's a sheep cup
@Cole You need a sheep dip.
@ChrisS why is it on fire?
@chriss also, looking at the photo, would you put the 10GbE ports on the second row together and leave slot B open?
@Cole just got bounced from the chat room saying that he needs at least 20 points to chat. His account isn't banned though. Is "sheep cup" a new easter egg word? =)
HELP HELP I CAN'T CHAT IN HERE ANYM oh nevermind.
@ewwhite Because you tried too download too much pr0n through it, too quickly. Excessive pr0ning is the leading cause of switch fires in America today.
21:13
@HopelessN00b If that was true you'd be scattered across your kin's place of origin long ago.
@ewwhite It would depend on your environment more than anything; there's nothing gained by putting them in any specific location.
I'm counting ports. I may add another 20-port module
You guys, I see another RAID 5 with 10 disks...
Just trying to make it pretty.
@MichaelHampton yep... with software RAID on top of ubuntu, on top of VMWare ESXi.
@WesleyDavid No, my pr0ning is distributed across multiple 40 Gb links, specifically to prevent switch fires and the lack of new pr0n they cause.
21:15
At least he has a Global Hot Spare.
@MichaelHampton which won't rebuild in time...
I had another double-disk failure this weekend.
RAID 5? Do you hate your data that much? — Michael Hampton 23 secs ago
I beat my data like a red-headed step child
Ugh, I'm so sick of RAID. Can't we just cloud all the data and be done with RAID already?
3
@Cole, email here: serverfault.com/help/other
I petition that we refer to cloud storage as RAID Elebenty! Who's with me?!
RAID 42 lost out because it besmirches Douglas Adams with the term "cloud"

Report #1 - done.
On to report #2. Kill me?
@voretaq7 No, you can't take a break until you finish all the reports. Then we can kill you. That's how the business world works.
@HopelessN00b running reports has left me dead inside. Only fitting that my outsides should match, no?
21:46
@voretaq7 Sorry, but HopelessN00b is right. Finish the reports, and then you can die. In the meantime, there's always alcohol to numb the pain.
@voretaq7 Again, you're not allowed to die until you're done your work. Once you finish the reports, you can die as much as you want.
@freiheit I think he works in one of those "drug free workplaces." So the alcohol will have to wait until he's done too. But once he's done the reports, he can go home and drink himself to death.
(That's how it works around here too - fix the servers first, then drown yourself in alcohol.)
22:03
the moment I'm allowed to drink properly again I'm getting drunk off my ass
AND I BLAME ALL OF YOU FOR TALKING ABOUT ALCOHOL
@RobM I wasn't talking about alcohol. I was talking about narcotics.
And depressants.
Narcotics and depressants and barbituates, oh my!!
I've only got anti-depressants. Can't help with any depressant requirements.
@RobM SNORT THE ASHES OF YOUR FOES' DEAD BODIES
I thought you said "asses" at first. I was about to leave quietly and disregard doctor's orders.
@RobM You might be on to something...
22:09
maybe
I have a double-thick hooded sweatjacket on, a flannel jacket on top of that, both buttoned and zipped, a baseball hat on, the hood pulled over that, I'm in a 76F room and I'm still shivering,
Sounds like fun. You snorted too much insanity-wolf flu virus over new year?
EAT. ANTHRAX.
You've seen my cooking then
@RobM Walter White would be proud.
22:12
I dunno who that is.
Walter Hartwell "Walt" White is a fictional character and the protagonist of the American television drama series Breaking Bad on AMC. He is portrayed by Bryan Cranston and was created by series creator Vince Gilligan. Once a promising chemist who was one of the founding members of the fictional, now multi-billion dollar company "Gray Matter Technologies", Walter left the company for personal reasons and became an unhappy and disillusioned high school chemistry teacher. After being diagnosed with inoperable lung cancer, he resorts to manufacturing methamphetamine to ensure his family's fin...
@RobM Or maybe you're like bad luck Brian.
Bad luck @RobM. Cooks chicken tortellini. MAKES METH.
Probably. Or Sheldon Cooper. My brother, my nephew and my niece all insist that's the case. Fuckers.
that'll be right
Bad luck @WesleyDavid. Writes popular Facebook app in Go. WRITES POPULAR FACEBOOK APP IN GO.
the only thing worse than that would be writing a 'popular' G+ app.
Does anyone still use that?
@RobM I like it!
22:16
You're their one user?
I talk to Serg sometimes.
one non-google user, then
eff-yeah... first HP server order at new jobby-job!
sounds like fun. I spent all day watching my boss try to order 4 ipads while I fixed the last switch he logged into.
22:30
How do you "try" to order 4 ipads?
22:47
@MichaelHampton you've not heard about my boss have you.

He could burn water trying to make tea.
So he's risen past his level of incompetence?
you could say that
hey @Chopper3
@HopelessN00b . . . so . . . I'm going to live forever?
because I'm never going to finish my work - there's entirely too much of it.
You also never get to drink.
@r.tanner.f nonsense, I drink all the time
pass the tape cleaner.
23:02
@voretaq7 Yes, but you'll be next to Mark Shuttleworth's ego.
@JeffFerland I already work with Ubuntu, so no change there.
Report #2 completed.
2 more, which will become tomorrow's problem shortly.
Executive Summary of Report #3: one bourbon, one scotch, one beer, rinse and repeat.
@freiheit Executive Summary of Report #3: Client usage dropped by 50% because insurance companies are scum-sucking ball-biters, hence our planned operating budget for 2013 has been reduced to "Dental Floss" rather than "Shoestring".
(it's actually not quite THAT dire, but usage did fall by 50%, because of insurance companies being bitches, which is kinda sucktastic)
@voretaq7 Unless you're into that sort of thing.
@voretaq7 Recommended plan of action: one bourbon, one scotch, one beer, rinse and repeat
23:09
@freiheit I have good scotch at home. No need for the bourbon or beer.
though the reference is appreciated, and that is the technical team's unofficial theme song around these parts.
@voretaq7 It doesn't hurt to have ready access to all 3.
Why does Cole have 0 network rep?
@tombull89 He got bounced somehow. Doesn't seem to be banned though
@tombull89 because he's a terrible person and did something to offend the database?
Hmm. Well, we'll see what happens tomorrow.
In other news, a designer friend has seen some work been nicked off of her portfolio and used to advertise a Gym...kinda ironic when she did it for a different gym in the first place.
23:16
@tombull89 So common to have work like that stolen. =/
@tombull89 yay! Theft of professional services! Misappropriation of copyrighted material! LAWSUITS FOR EVERYONE!
YAAAAAY!
So she's in for an interesting day tomorrow.
23:37
I smell DevOps...
23:51
@MichaelHampton I used to volunteer for a fire department. It taught me to carry a small container of Vicks for that kind of situation.
@JeffFerland heh. I just spotted a subtle yet annoying change on SF.
Woooo! 102 fever and climbing.
BRING ON THE HALLUCINATIONS!!
@WesleyDavid Whatever you do, don't create any situations where I need the Vicks.
@JeffFerland Giggity.
