@martin's For the most part, Stack Exchange sites do not want questions which will lead to "debate, arguments, polling, or extended discussion." There are a couple of outliers where subjective questions are handled differently, like programmers.SE, but for the most part that's the way it works.

Or Parenting.

@ewwhite But that's a glib answer given by someone who doesn't know what's here. Yes, SE wants the sites to be good references, easily found by google, but you always get more out of a community when you participate in it.

@martin's Honestly next time skip the question, come in here and go nuts

@Aarthi Can't argue with that. Having said that, there are tons of questions on the SE ecosystem that don't have checked or conclusive answers that are still very, very useful to a visitor. From a utility standpoint, if you look at this ecosystem as an "encyclopedia of solutions" even incomplete answers can be extremely useful.

And the parenting site, which I forget its URL right now.

3:02 AM
@JoelESalas Dude, you really need to cool it with the attacks.

@MDMarra maybe if you switched to a Pony gravatar...

@Ward This is my male breast cancer choppertar!
@martin's ?

@martin's I don't see any attacks. Dropping into chat to ask a subjective question, or to ask whether a question is a good fit for the site, is a good idea.

@martin's I think you misread that: he's saying the types of questions you're asking on the site would be the type that this chatroom loves and welcomes

He suggested coming in here and asking next time, what are you mad about?

3:03 AM
@MichaelHampton Parenting ?

@MDMarra Maybe after he recovers.

@Aarthi Yes!

@MichaelHampton success

@MichaelHampton The way I would tend to deal with these --if I had those rights-- would be to allow a few answers to trickle in and see what personality that thing takes on. If it is obvious that it is going absolutely nowhere, THEN you move towards closing or perhaps even deleting it. What's happening now is that --my opinion-- a lot of potentially useful questions are being closed instantly without a chance to see if they develop into something useful.

I would also like to remind you that closing a question on the site is not necessarily the end of the question. The possibility remains open to improve it and have it reopened.

3:05 AM
closed is something of a misnomer; it's more "kicked to drafts"

@martin's With regard to your original question, my recommendation is to avoid Cloudstack. It's a wreck, and just ruined my night. Understanding that you need something in the Linux ecosystem versus something like VMWare vCloud, look up OnApp. It's the foundation for the private cloud my colocation facility uses, and is very fair in recurring fees.

How's everyone?

@martin's That might be true, but I don't feel your question was among them. It's easy enough to put together a list of such stacks via Google or Wikipedia. In fact, Wikipedia is very good at this sort of thing.

@ewwhite so, have you determined for sure now that the KVM was at fault for your POST issues?

@ewwhite Thanks for the feedback. After playing with it for a while I got the sense that CloudStack might not be ready for prime time. I'll check OnApp. Thanks for the pointer.

@martin's OnApp gives an excellent requirements and same config pages, which outline the components needed for typical deployment scenarios.
My answer to your question, had it not been closed, would have been something like that.

A: HP ProLiant DL360 G7 hangs at "Power and Thermal Calibration" screen

ewwhiteSo, after bringing a third system into the mix, and experiencing the same issue, we began to question the environment. I dug up a copy of the HP ProLiant Servers Troubleshooting Guide and found the POST problems flowchart shown below. Carefully running through the steps in the chart, we realiz...

I'm still kind of amazed that was the issue

@ewwhite And somehow you get +9 heh
Is sleep in seconds or milliseconds?

Which implementation

@ewwhite And that answer would have been of value (and, yes, constructive) to anyone visiting SF with a similar concern. That's my point about not killing-off questions so quickly. Let them breathe a little bit. Usefulness of the site isn't necessarily defined by a small group of users. There's a huge silent user-base that has no voice other than voting with their visits. I happen to think that your answer would have been deemed useful and constructive to many

3:11 AM
That's a matter for metaSF

@martin's You're right.

put your thoughts there, the people that matter will read them

@JoelESalas Or better for meta.SO

@martin's There's no question that those questions could have value. It's whether they should be on SE, or SF.

@martin's Too subjective and also too time bound. The answer will be scoped to a very tight perspective and experience, and also will be out of date in six months. So no, that is not a good question, and while it's a "good" answer, it's not a good answer for a site that follows a Q/AAAAA format.
Remember, ServerFault is not a forum.

3:13 AM
mSF protip: don't rant about your own questions if you make a meta post

@ewwhite OK, well I have to go feed the kids. Play time is over. Thanks for being constructive. Feel free to PM me for full contact info. I'd be happy to help you in any way I can.

@martin's There's no such thing as PM, not here.

@martin's we don't have a private messaging system, i'm sorry to inform you.

no PM :)

Again, not a forum.

3:15 AM
@martin's And this concerns me - you say you've spent the time to understand the StackExchange culture... and yet you say with certainty "PM me!" Dude...

@WesleyDavid Please don't beat the horse.

cat beats horse...I can see the headlines now

@simchona So are you saying... glasses ... I'm a nag?

@martin's I'm the nice one here.

Hey Wesley, I just noticed, you're only the second nicest looking cat in this room now.
@ewwhite oh god

3:17 AM
@MDMarra Yes, @simchona has quite a pretty kitty as her gravatar! :D

@MDMarra As you should.

3:19 AM
@simchona Sometimes I can be a bad influence. I mustang out with the wrong crowd.

@Aarthi byebye. Don't forget to send my regards to baplha about his excellent markdown implementation in chat!

@simchona Sometimes these discussions really stirrup my emotions.

@WesleyDavid I guess you'd better pony up and face them then.

@simchona I mare or may not have the reins to my own heart.

@WesleyDavid Reins.

3:21 AM
@simchona Well heck.

By the way - had a phone screen with a recent IBM acquisition today
Sounds too good to be true, so either it is or they won't want me :)

@WesleyDavid Sorry. Habit.

@simchona I hate homonyms.

@WesleyDavid Dude, it's 2013 man. Don't be so intolerant.

@MDMarra Those homonyms, with their infernal same-sound marriages.

3:23 AM
@WesleyDavid GOD MADE BLUE AND RED, NOT BLUE AND BLEU

Bleu isn't pronounced the same, though.

I hate you

@simchona Okay, you're voted off the island.
=P

:)
Because I really don't know the answer to this now, are blue and blew the same?

@MDMarra Yes.

ok cool, pretend I said that

"Bleu" is more like..."bluh"
Except in the bastardization of "bleu cheese"

I've asked exactly one question on english.se and I was petrified to click submit.

goes to check

Predictably, it was edited at least twice.

Your question did really well.

3:26 AM
Who was it that asked about cooking a turkey with electric arcs on cooking.se?
5
Q: Cooking turkey with high-voltage arc

MikeyBI'm hungry at a power substation. All I have is a 13-pound turkey and these air-interrupt breakers. How long does the turkey have to sit in the arc before it's done?

Found it

It wasn't that idiot who asked about grinding coffee beans without a coffee grinder.

They really shouldn't let us ask things on other sites.
@MichaelHampton Nah, someone here was working in a power station over thanksgiving or something
So we started talking about the feasibility of high-voltage cooking
Next thing you know, that question exists

@MDMarra Any chance you caught the PS language specification that @RyanRies posted earlier today?
I've been reading that in my spare time, haven't finished, but mainly focused on the bits which I think may address the behavior we're seeing Re: your -Filter question.

@MDMarra he means this one:

Anyhoo, it's been fun but it looks like this has calmed down for now. Feel free to ping me if things heat up again.

Q: How can I grind coffee without a coffee grinder?

Michael HamptonI usually buy prepackaged ground coffee for my drip coffee maker, but recently I accidentally bought a bag of whole bean coffee and threw away the receipt before I realized my mistake. Can I salvage this bag of coffee without owning a coffee grinder? On the Internet I have seen the suggestion o...

If you want to have some fun, try this:

@jscott I did, but I didn't download it

@( "cat", $null, "dog", "", "hamster" ) | Where-Object { $_ -ne "horse" }

@MDMarra And by coincidence? Look who voted to close it...

haha ohhh

3:32 AM
Ryan was correct, a double-quoted null, e.g. "$null" is an empty string, but not $null. An AD object's attribute which is unset is not an empty string, it is $null.

@jscott right
I'm not on Windows right now. What's the output of that command?

I still don't have a great way to rephrase it (I still need to digest the spec) but it seems a "real" $null doesn't ever not equal anything.

huh
but I mean
wait

The output is:
cat
dog

hamster

but

3:34 AM
The count would return 4, not 5.

that doesn't make sense though

That's why I'm reading the spec :)

I mean, it makes sense if that's the spec

But that can't be the intended behavior

3:34 AM
I think it is.

Q: What the heck is going on with this AD filter in PowerShell?

MDMarraI recently wrote this answer and stumbled on something interesting. get-aduser -filter {-not (description -eq "auto")} | measure-object and get-aduser -filter {description -ne "auto"} | measure-object return two very different things when run against the same data, with the first command ret...

$null attributes are handled in a non-intuitive way when used with -filter
@jscott How is that useful?

1 min ago, by jscott
That's why I'm reading the spec :)

haha fair enough

Sorry I don't have better info yet, there's a lot in the spec, but it's been nagging me, so I've been doing some little tests, scratching my head, and reading more.

@jscott I'm about to bounty it I think
In 13 hours when it's eligible, that is

3:38 AM
I really wish there was an SF'er with some SO cred, I think one of those guys could nail it with a really clear explanation that would make us all just go "ah, I get it now."

They exist
just not in chat
Alanik or whatever, for example
apparently he writes DNS RFCs
and schools TomTom

Actually, chat-ping me when you want to bounty, maybe wait until a week day? I would gladly throw down +100 (or more) for a great answer.

Can more than one person bounty the same question?

@MDMarra Yes, but not at the same time

Uh, I'll have to read the bounty spec, I've never done it before.

3:40 AM
hahaha bounty spec

If you want to be even more bothered, what do you think this returns? "horse" -ne $null

...false?

It would be nice if multiple people could chip in to a single bounty... But then who would assign the Award?

bzzz True :)

@jscott I should hope it returns true, but I suspect otherwise

3:42 AM
dude what teh fuck
WHY WHY WHY WHY WHY

What does $null -ne "horse" return?

@ChrisS True

Well that's a decent start

That's so fucking inconsistent though
oh my god, I hate powershell now

But didn't someone mention that it only screws up in the -Filter argument?

3:43 AM
@ChrisS But this chat.stackexchange.com/transcript/message/7641062#7641062 doesn't return five Trues

@ChrisS not always
It's not just -filter, it's just where I discovered the behavior
Fuck this, I'm learning Unix.
4
(not really)

@ChrisS That was probably me that suspected it only affected the -Filter implementation.
I'm not so sure I stand by that hypothesis any longer ;)

Well -LDAPFilter worked, so I think we left it as "weirdness with -filter"

Gotta love the LDAP Filters.

but that's clearly not the case

3:46 AM
@MDMarra Correct, the above simple Where test demonstrates it's not just -Filter. I also think my original tests were flawed in that I wasn't testing a collection directly, rather picking it up later in the pipeline.

waaaah

@("what", "the", "fark") | where-object { $null -ne "horse" } | measure == 3
@($null, $null, $null) | where-object { $_ -ne "horse" } | measure == 0

I'm sorry man, but -Filter { description -ne "Something" } excluding anything with a $null value can't be the intentional behavior

If I picked up an attribute and did something to it, let's say evaling as $($_.description), I was effectively creating an empty string, having started with a "real" $null.

You clearly want to filter for all objects with a description that doesn't equal "Something" excluding $null descriptions in the result is bad
even if it is technically in the spec

3:50 AM
I agree.
I would still love to hear it explained though :)

Having to write it as { -not (description -eq "something")} is nuts
Ok, here's a question. Does PS3 work this way too?

I don't have access to PS3 right now. But I do know they "fixed" this one behavior I had already been working around: serverfault.com/questions/457718/…
Here's the MS Connect bug report, filed by Keith Hill himself: connect.microsoft.com/PowerShell/feedback/details/281908/…

Yep. I'm running 3.0

damnit

Thanks Chris for testing.

3:54 AM
$host.version tells you what version you're running... Didn't know that till just now.

My coworker just got me a 2012 VM up for our print server migration, so I have barely gotten my feet wet with PS3.
@ChrisS Be sure to look at $PSVersionTable too, your host can alter the version reported by $host.version.

Still 3.0... To be expected on Win8

For instance, in this comment exchange you see that installing/using PowerGUI will cause $host.version to return the version of PowerGUI, not PowerShell.

ok, i'm outa here

@Aarthi Yes, you can PM me. Look at my profile.
@ewwhite Check my profile
@WesleyDavid In SE you can remain anonymous if you choose to. That's true. Not my case. Check my profile. So, yes, you can PM me via email.
@simchona "There's no such thing as PM, not here." Only true if you want to remain anonymous. Check my profile.
night night

@martin's I suppose that's true for certain liberal definitions of the term "PM"
I keep my email address and Twitter handle in my profile, but never considered it a means of "PMing" me - it's email. Or Twitter.

Oh good, Martin's back.

@Ward I just finished reading it after wading my way back to find the start and now you post it
@Ward yesterday I went for a spin with Jayne and I passed the 100 miles this year, it took me till March last year to do the same
New /about page serverfault.com/about
7

Sorry, the list on the side of who's active doesn't seem to update in an understandable way... I was waiting to make sure martin's was gone and/or someone else was here.
@Iain Still sunny, but I'm still sick... looks like it'll be nice part of next week.

8:23 AM
:(
@Ward I signed Jayne up for Strava so she can easily keep a record of what she does - on yesterdays 10 miler on which we averaged 10 miles/hour she picked up 4 top 10 places on segments.

There's something that doesn't add up with that guy... The best I can come up with is that he thinks SE should be the way he wants it. His casual use of "PM me" (when SE doesn't have a PM system in any common sense of the term), his "the FAQ says nothing about this" (when it's right there in the What Not To Ask section), his inability to figure out what Aarthi was trying to say (and who she is).
And his need to repeatedly state how much of an authority he is: "SE staff like my idea," "I've started 3 companies and earn $250k/year"... Oh well, a little arguing is good.

8:42 AM
Unfortunately his overly combative style means that any pertinent points he may make are lost because of the noise that surrounds them

9:08 AM
@MichaelHampton I read the VMware vs. KVM: A Functionality/Price Discussion whitepaper you linked earlier. I didn't like the conslusion.

9:21 AM
@ewwhite What didn't you like about it ?

@Iain It glossed over features.
And over provisioning time, mindshare, consistency, vendor and hardware support...
I don't think KVM and VMWare are functionally-equivalent.

9:53 AM
the whole "IBM commissioned us to take a closer look" is the smoking gun of course

@MDMarra @jscott I've left a comment on one of this guy's answers on SO asking him to look at serverfault.com/questions/465884/… - he's a PS MVP

right...

10:17 AM
Maybe I should be more open to non-vmware solutions

10:48 AM
@ewwhite seen this? It's a hotfix released after the latest SPP - h20566.www2.hp.com/portal/site/hpsc/template.PAGE/public/kb/…
ah nevermind, 360 g7 isn't listed

@Cole Just got back into town. Very tired but can't let the timezone swap goof me up. At least it's not pouring rain, just damn cold after Florida.

@Adrian aye, was FL nice? I'm headed down in a little bit over 2 weeks
rainy and cold here in MA today so :(

@Cole It was there. And the pay's good.

@Adrian always a plus!

@Adrian sweet!!
@Adrian I received good news from my employer, paid for my training to get my VCP
which is next month
So it's not even something I had to really wait for

Most excellent. Paid training is good.

especially since VCP5 will be very beneficial to me

Does anyone have the "I'm sending you on VMware training" image macro

I didn't know there was one lol

A: Can MS SQL Management Studio 2012 be installed without installing SQL SERVER?

ColeYou can run the installer on your local machine. During the feature selection dialog, select "Management Tools - Basic" or "Management Tools - Complete" based on what you need. Launch the install from the CD/ISO: Then go to Installation > New SQL Server stand-alone installation or add features ...

Mother fucker better accept that answer

Q: Hyper-V - Not your standard V2V

ErnieTheGeekThe main question is: Can I perform a Virtual to Virtual Conversion from one Hyper-V Server to another Hyper-V Server? Why I need to convert instead of a myriad of other options: We've got a RHEL 5 server that somewhere along the way someone took a snapshot of. The snapshot has gone unnoticed ...

How does a snapshot get to 800 gigs!?

@Iain Ooo, hit the century mark so soon? =)
@Cole Taking pictures at an obesity support group?

@WesleyDavid dead. DEAD. I just choked on my food.

So I'm selling a LaCie 2Big enclosure on Amazon. The very first line I write for it is "THIS UNIT HAS NO HARD DRIVES." The very last sentence is "To reiterate, this unit does not have any hard drives, only empty caddies." I'm also selling it at less than half the price of a fully loaded 2big.
So someone buys it. I email them and say "to reiterate, there are no hard drives. Are you okay with this?" but don't get a response. I ship it because I have to ship quickly with Amazon.
I get an email from him, today, two days later "Oops, didn't know it didn't have drives. Yeah, I don't want it."
>_<

ugh wtf

7:49 PM
HAVE YOU NO READING SKILLS?!

Apparently not
The Internet is full of idiots. I mean look at me.

Well, he's got it and I'm not refunding him. He can buy two good drives and put them in and he'll have a functioning unit cheaper than otherwise. He should thank me. =P

you have no reason to, you put it in the listing that it had no hard drives. WHY ARE PEOPLE SO DUMB
No want to be productive today ugh
44 degrees and rainy.

@Cole 44 degrees here too, but at least it's sunny.
Surprisingly cold here lately.

Wish it was sunny here

Was 33 over night. Had to wrap the big organ-pipe cactus in the front yard with blankets.

Uh. Hot +rain is not good
We got a predicted -8 tonight

We're supposed to have record high temperatures tomorrow, around 50 (10C).
And there are no cacti here to worry about.

9:17 PM
This should make you feel better

@Cole Did you try turning it off and jumping out of a window?

I just got a call from customer...
"We need to shut the server down"
"Why?"
"To move it to a new UPS!!"
"Oh, just move one power supply cable at a time... no need for server downtime"
And at that point, the customer unleashed on me...

Hahaha

about how I was providing bad service, etc.

FUCK YEAH I got it working
Dovecot is my BITCH

9:30 PM
"If you don't want to do it, I'll call someone else!!"
@JoelESalas oh my..

@ewwhite Because they wanted to shut the server down needlessly?

@WesleyDavid it was a real surprise to me too

@ShaneMadden Yes, a needless shutdown...

Where is the "Read the goddamned documentation" close reason?

"I know what we need to do, and if we need to shut down the server, you need to help us!"

9:42 PM
@ewwhite Is it possible that these idiots have plugged both PSUs into the same UPS?

So I painstakingly set up my mail server the way I want it, now I'm thinking it was a complete waste of time.

I'm just having trouble imagining what on earth they could possibly be thinking.

First real email I sent from that server, to a friend - Subject: what bitch Body: do you even lift bro

@MichaelHampton They are into the same UPS... but if the new UPS is live, it's just a power cable move.
but it was a client yelling at me for being hard to work with.
the third of the week...

@ewwhite You are hard to work with. You keep insisting on doing things right.

9:49 PM
so I'm definitely in a position where I need to reevaluate...
the HP server problems at work really threw me off.

@ewwhite Wait, wait... you're telling them how to avoid downtime and they're saying you're providing bad service.

@WesleyDavid Yes... because I ask too many questions.

@ewwhite Is this your side jobs or with the MSP that you work for?

and I'm probably doing it in a combative way....
my consulting
at work, I was in the dog house for the HP server thing... and for falling behind on paperwork.
So I'm slipping a little bit.

@ewwhite Did you just tell them, "fine, call someone else"
@ewwhite Shit happens - why is it your fault that the KVM switch was flaky? The paperwork thing, well... =(

9:53 PM
@WesleyDavid Oh, I'm off the hook for the HP situation...
that wasn't my doing... other than it was me recommending my vendor...

@Iain I'm still in the "Read all the things!" phase as I consume bicycling information. I hope to be riding by spring sometime.
Or rather, in spring. Not by spring.

@ewwhite Yeah, they can't really blame the KVM thing on you. Though the low voltage RAM thing...

LV RAM is fine.
I'm not being blamed for the work thing... but I could have been blamed for it
and that was a major source of stress.

Well in that case, all you have left is paperwork.

@MichaelHampton Somewhat... but my clients are getting unhappy
so I probably need help.
moar @mdmarra?
and I'm on call this weekend

9:58 PM
@ewwhite Sounds like you really need more hours in the day.

or to manage expectations better.
