9:00 PM
@voretaq7 Wouldn't know it from the characters I've seen wandering there.

@BartSilverstrim Rent... I was looking at Manhattan rents
and it was all over the place.

$1650/month.
Fourth floor walkup.

@ewwhite East side: Left testicle. West side: Right testicle.

@Zoredache I came from finance, so the $$$ kinda flowed...

Rent is definitely harsh, but I wanted to live in Manhattan.

9:00 PM
(East or West village: BOTH testicles.)

I was surprised to find that NYC finance sysadmins made even more..

@voretaq7 I wanted to be a unicorn when I grew up, not a eunuch.

@voretaq7 You're facing south?

@voretaq7 BOTH?

@MikeyB Presumably, yes. But either way
@ewwhite Rents in the village are rather... extravagant
@BartSilverstrim that's a 1-bedroom?

9:04 PM
@voretaq7 Well, given that your left testicle goes towards the east sideā€¦ you're facing south.

@MikeyB That doesn't really have any bearing on it -- the left testicle is the one arbitrarily assigned a lower value by society (vis-a-vis "suck my left nut!")

@voretaq7 You walk into a small kitchen; to the left is a "bedroom" with the bathroom (shower and toilet, and you can't really close the bathroom door while on the toilet.) To the right of the kitchen is a "living room" area.
So basically a two room with bathroom.

@BartSilverstrim > take chocolate

No fire escape though...

It's crazy, man... but that's NY living.

9:06 PM
Pretty much.

@BartSilverstrim early pre-war (bathroom has no sink), or semi-modern (you can wash your hands without going to the kitchen)? :-)

I always assumed people spent more time outside in NY because there was no space indoors

But I'm not far from subway, home depot, grocery...
@voretaq7 There's a mini-sink in the bathroom.

@ewwhite shrug I live in 500 square feet in the suburbs. Because I'm NEVER home.

Most people seem to use apartments for crashing.

9:07 PM
@BartSilverstrim Doin' better than my aunt's first manhattan apartment then :-)

Otherwise they're out and about...

@voretaq7 Where you be? Meatpacking district? The clubs? THe Chelsea Apple Store?

@BartSilverstrim well there's places to go for everything else - bar, restaurant, lounge, park, etc.

@ewwhite He lives in user's nightmares and Central Park.
@voretaq7 IKEA.

@vore As in, why never home?

9:08 PM
@ewwhite when I'm in manhattan? parks, 5th ave apple store (24 hours - CHARGE MY PHONE BITCHES!), museums during the day

@BartSilverstrim $1650 for a place in Manhattan? Seems much more reasonable than the reputation leads one to believe.

@ewwhite well there's work for 8-12 hours a day, then I go jog or kick around at coffee shops (REAL coffee shops, not scarbucks), on weekends I'm only home if I'm cleaning the apartment otherwise I'm somewhere else (park, store, flying, beach)
@AaronCopley 5th floor walkup :)

@AaronCopley Maybe it comes with free roaches and rats.

@voretaq7 I missed that detail. :D

you can get 1BR for <2k in manhattan if you're willing to climb stairs

9:11 PM
Good way to stay in shape!

I hate elevators

So NY is kinda Europe-like, where people have more to do OUTSIDE...

less than 5 floors and not moving shit in/out and I'll take the stairs thank you.

@MichaelHampton We've seen a couple roaches...

here in chicago, we stay inside...

9:12 PM
@ewwhite well you have your american distractions indoors too

@voretaq7 pretty much...hard part is getting them, as they go pretty damn fast.

but generally if you're in NYC proper (or in the suburbs and not a complete shit) you don't spend your life at home
you're also talking about a city where you could go do a different thing every day for a year and still have a mile-long list of shit you haven't done.

yeah, true

@ewwhite That's a great idea, 4-5 months out of the year. Winter would suck... Summers.. tolerable but uncomfortable in the warmer weather.

so, @vore, what's the downside?

9:18 PM
Odd. I just got an e-mail from a recruiter about a position in NYC.

@AaronCopley See, it lures everyone...

I have absolutely no desire to live in NYC or anywhere within 100 miles of it.

Too bad we just bought a house here! And I am under qualified for the position...
Senior UNIX/Linux Architect / 10-years experience / RHCE / CCNA / SAN etc..
Probably big money, though.

@AaronCopley Hay, I could do that!

Want me to forward you the e-mail? :)

9:21 PM
haha

I could tell the recruiter I am not interested but know someone who is..
I still need to test for RHCE, again. And I have a CCNA voucher that is good until Dec 31. Not enough hours in the day...

haha... naw, not my thing anymore.

@ewwhite $

@voretaq7 So are you surviving? Or is it trashcan fires and pork&beans?

@ewwhite Oh I survive quite well - I'm well paid by my employer, and I live outside NYC proper so housing is lower (I pay in co-op maintenance fees + mortgage about $500 less than Bart is paying in rent, though probably for about 400-500 sq ft less space)

9:31 PM
@voretaq7 Not bad...but you still venture into the City?

@voretaq7 You move? I thought you were in Philly?

@AaronCopley newp. NY born and raised. Misspent some time in Chicago and out on the west coast though.
@ewwhite fairly frequently. It's a 20 minute drive or train ride

Ahh... Maybe that was someone else in here.

Chicago is... no, I can't defend it anymore... racist, mean-spirited city...

I thought we were talking cheese steaks one day.

9:33 PM
@mdmarra is Philly.

FFS, I hate vendors that hide their product documentation on a site that requires authentication...

Redhat, Cisco... who else?

@ewwhite Do you know Chicago well enough to figure out where he Hell I took this picture from? Bugs me that I can't figure it out on a map.

@ewwhite Red Hat docs aren't behind an authentication wall, but their knowledge base is.

@ewwhite docs.redhat.com -- Some of the best documentation, too.

9:36 PM
@AaronCopley no, but one of those 3D city view map apps might help
just line up the sears tower where it is in the photo and draw a line

@voretaq7 Good point. Those weren't around back then but I could give that a shot.

nice photo though :)

@ewwhite brocade is what I am looking for at the moment, but I know Aruba does it as well, and others that I don't recall off the top of my head.

Thanks.. I tried doing that back in the day but can't find those concrete silo things.

@AaronCopley You were here.

9:38 PM
@AaronCopley yeah I'm not sure where those are, but you can use any 3 buildings in the city core (the Sears Tower, the one in front of it, and the one to the right of it that I used to know the name of) to get a vector

@ewwhite OH MY GOD THAT'S IT!!!

It's across the river from the Chicago Produce market on the Sanitary and Ship Canal.

@voretaq7 Hancock Tower

Those grain elevators are popular for urban explorers...

@AaronCopley yes - I know it was some overrated insurance company!

9:39 PM
@AaronCopley (took me longer to figure out how to get a URL out of Google Maps)

@ewwhite Seriously, thank you... I've been trying to geotag that image in Flickr for some time.

No worries... see, I's miss knowing my City that well... NY is on some craziness.
@AaronCopley Tag the photo with "chicagoist" on Flickr.

I am so stoked to have the location. I can't wait to tell my wife.

I keep a collection of pics to have published on Chicagoist, LAist, Gothamist...

We were in Chicago on a layover gone awry and ended up touring the city and then driving back to Virginia..

9:44 PM
@AaronCopley Sounds like Midway Airport.

Yep. Of course...

well, I'll keep looking at NY apartments.
le sigh...

If you move to DC instead I have a great place I am renting out now. :)
Just outside the city, but rail accessible.

BLEH
:)

Only if it's on the VA side and I never, ever have to enter the District.

9:53 PM
@MichaelHampton It's on the VA side near Old Town Alexandria.
Now that our contract is accepted on the new place we need to find a renter, ASAP.
@ewwhite Done. You should see it now.

10:20 PM

Q: Link Domain to server with Nameservers?

andy Possible Duplicate: Hosting your own DNS Sorry if I sound like a noob, but I am. I've had a VPS for about 3-4 months just to learn about *nix and try and host a few sites. At the moment I just have my domain pointed to an A record EG: vps.mydomain.co.uk => (A) 12.345.678.910 I want t...

someone beat me to posting "Go read the cricket book"
I.. I'm losin' my touch :(

Can we just auto-close questions with mention of VPS?

@AaronCopley hit ratio 0.85 -- Good enough for me
then again auto-close everything on posting probably has a hit ratio of 0.70 and would also be acceptable
...did someone REALLY just propose 2 edits that were solely changing 'mydomain.com' to 'example.com' to conform to RFC 2606?

Afterrnoon Gents. I'm sitting in front of a tent in Central Idaho sipping an IPA by the Salmon River. :)

@voretaq7 Please tell me they are old questions, too. So they can be needlessly bumped to the top.

@AaronCopley from about 5 days ago
which isn't bad, but I'm not approving those edits

10:33 PM
That's not so bad... They could be from late 2010.
COME ON RESTORE. Y U NO FINISH SO I CAN LEAVE?

Anyone ever work in vmware (or know someone who works there?

@Adrian Sounds like fun. I spent quite a bit of time tethering my netbook to my phone while I was hiking through Shenandoah National Park. Too bad I got "NO SERVICE" half the time...
I can't imagine why the National Park Service would block the carriers from putting cell towers in the park...

What a day. Kitty shred drapes!!
@Adrian Nice.

@MichaelHampton I rather like that there are still places I can go to unplug!

@AaronCopley I was surprised at some of the places I got a 4G signal.
Of course, the weekend I was out there was the same weekend a server decided to lose both RAID1 drives at the same time...

10:44 PM
@WesleyDavid MAD Cat?
@MichaelHampton I KNOW right?!? I mean the new towers look so NATURAL!

You wouldn't like me when I'm angry.

@WesleyDavid mmhmm. throws catnip

Ignore the GW Bush thingy in kitty's hand
I can't stand when my wrath gets politicized.
Oh, and here in Scottsdale, the cell towers look like this:

@voretaq7 I would have spit milk out of my nose had I been drinking any... lol..

@AaronCopley no lie, there's one EXACTLY like that in upstate NY

10:47 PM
Since we're all in picture posting mode.

It would blend right in... except it's a good 3x the hight of any tree around, and all of our trees are oaks and maples. Not a conifer to be seen for miles

I deed, I could get used to this vacation business. :)

@Adrian If I could somehow get power out to the backcountry, I'd probably stay there.
Oh, and beer delivery.

@voretaq7 That's so awesome...
...ly stupid.
Ok gents, I am out of here. G'night.

whos on mountain lion - anyone?

11:03 PM
Nope, on Beefy Miracle :)

thats a sexual joke isn't it

late 2011 i7 macbook pro 15 inch - mountain lion - when it comes out of sleep from last night - the wifi icon is unresponsive and the menu bar beach wheels
have to hard power off and back on - 3rd day in a row
fucking weird

@lsiunsuex I had that problem with iPhoto after the ML upgrade, but nothing that serious
Mind you I don't use wifi
Or a MBP, just an iMac

hmm
i could hard wire, no big deal
@MichaelHampton are they serious about that?

11:08 PM
@lsiunsuex 100% serious.
@lsiunsuex It started out as a joke a few years back, though.

thats awesome
they should of made the fireworks / hot dog a wallpaper

@lsiunsuex It was based on a couple of screenshots that were in the Red Hat 7 installer way back in the 90's or so.
@lsiunsuex It IS a wallpaper, and comes with Fedora 17 :)

awesome
color me f'ing purple i've been out of touch with desktop linux

@lsiunsuex OK, well, you may have heard about this GNOME vs. KDE thing. The end result of that, as of today, is that KDE makes your system look sort of almost but not quite exactly like Windows (but without all the blue screens), and GNOME makes your system look sort of almost but not quite exactly like Mac (but without any actual functionality).

11:24 PM
yeah i know that
wouldn't have nessecarily compared GNOME to os x but ok
then again, its been years since i've used it

@lsiunsuex Visually that's the direction they're going in, with GNOME 3. If you haven't seen it, it's a radical departure from GNOME 2. Unfortunately they have also been removing features from the GUI with each release. Soon it'll probably just have one button...

yeah, close enough i guess :)

If you moved the OS X dock to the left, it would be hard for a noob to tell the difference.
You have no more close votes today; come back in 30 minutes.

who?

Me. I've been burning off my close votes in /review right before midnight UTC every day.

11:37 PM
i should try to participate more in the sites
time time time. if only i had more time.

Heh, don't I know it.

nothing like adding a new feature to a system when the go live date is um.... 3 days away. fuck.
