7:00 PM
They've got some arrogant neckbeardy asshole of a network admin there. Won't use a ticket system. Won't document the network. Won't train his padawans on how stuff works so that he stays indispensible.

We had a vendor tell us that part of the contract was that we needed to tell them we didn't want to renew 3 months before the renewal. When we wanted to ditch them they said we had already defaulted into another year because we didn't read the fine print.
@Adrian Sounds like the lady I work with.

@Goatmale I'd just stop paying them at that point.

@Adrian Is it just me, or was anyone else expecting to find a gay p0rn site a t that domain ipns.com ? All the devoweling I see in im/text chats these days has done weird things to my mind.

@Zoredache Yeah, and wholly appropriate for how shitty their service is. Seriously, half their monitoring equipment is on vanity domains operated by the neckbeard. The jerk's totally metastasized and taken over the operations from management.
The network admin even had his vanity domain added to SPF records for all domains hosted there.

It's a customer I cannot. Need to make nice to get paid.

7:04 PM
@Goatmale Did the contract say such things?
because if it did you're kinda screwed.

@voretaq7 depends on the state.

@Adrian Still involves court and/or lawyers

I just make sure all the lights are blinking and that the backups are working and everything is documented and shiny.

@voretaq7 Yes. Most likely.

(also the fun language at the end of most contracts: "This agreement to be governed by the laws of the state of [wherever the contractor is located, with laws conveniently favorable to the contractor]")

7:07 PM
Yeah, not a great way to do business.

@voretaq7 Which don't necessarily override consumer protection laws though.

afternoon

Stockholm Syndrome has never been a great business practice.

@Adrian consumer protection laws are kinda spotty when dealing with corp-to-corp contracts aren't they?
@Goatmale Works for banks!

Haha. We're a "good" bank.

7:08 PM
@voretaq7 sometimes. also depends. It's also why we tend to pay for that stuff via credit card.

Family owned.. very community and customer service oriented.

@Goatmale . . . you'll be bought by Chase in about a month.
Or Capital One.

@Goatmale Being a small bank is a kiss of death nowadays. Stigma of being a bank and not having the scale to play with the big fish.

In that case i'm glad I work for an MSP and not the bank :)

I refuse to do my financial services through banks anymore. credit union or cash.

7:12 PM
@Adrian Unfortunately my local credit union is not as attractive as OctoBank

I've never understood why some people still think that what bank you go through is a sign of social standing.
@voretaq7 You're in NY. Aren't there about 300 credit unions within spitting distance?

@Adrian kinda
many are still restricted membership (the good ones)
the best open-membership one by me is Bethpage FCU

@voretaq7 Weird. None of them do that anymore here. If you're residing in the state, you can join.

@Adrian that's a huge problem IMHO
credit union membership should be restricted to people of known good financial standing
(unfortunately that means they wind up being too small to compete effectively)

Who else slept for 14 hours yesterday?

7:20 PM
Right or wrong?
Sorry to you and everyone who upvoted this, but you're just wrong. Handling the loss of in progress writes is exactly what the journal is for, and as long as the drive correctly reports whether it has a write cache and obeys commands to flush it, the journal guarantees that the metadata will not be inconsistent. You only need a supercap or battery backed raid cache so you can enable write cache without having to enable barriers, which sacrifices some performance to maintain data correctness. — psusi 7 mins ago

Grrr. A deleted Group Policy and it's still being applied.

@voretaq7 Not really been a problem. It's so tough to get a loan through the credit unions here (as opposed to the banks) that most of the local credit unions came out of the financial crisis smelling like roses and scooping up tens of thousand of new customers each month.

@Adrian our credit unions will give me loans, but not at an attractive rate

I'm a member of the Boeing Credit Union, which isn't just for Boeing employees anymore, and it's been very very good.

(9%)

7:26 PM
@voretaq7 Pretty much. My LoC is 10%.

@Adrian I wouldn't mind, but at that rate it's simply not attractive to borrow

@Goatmale Have you refreshed policy yet?

@MDMarra I did a "repadmin /syncall" and a "gpupdate /force" on the client.

yeah
What policy? Some don't revert to their previous state when unapplied?
(like Folder Redirection)

our credit unions are also less willing to do "interesting" things than some smaller banks

case in point, when I financed the airplane I did it through a bank up in Ithaca (7%) because our credit union wasn't willing to finance it as a boat/RV loan (3%) and would only offer me an unsecured loan (9%)

7:28 PM
It's an install policy for a product we use, but the install policy is for two versions ago.

Do you not just update the existing policy with the new installer?

They reccomended disabling it and using a logon script

oh
gross

Ever use Desktop Authority?

@Goatmale Spit.

7:30 PM
The logon script lauches the product it self, so it makes sense.

Nope, never heard of it

Posting "-1 for poor reading-comprehension..." would be too snarky, right?

What's it do?

@Goatmale I am sure they meant startup script right? Not logon script? Logon scripts run in the users context and they shouldn't be able to install anything.

@MDMarra It's uses KiXStarter scripts to make group policy like policies that are a lot easier to manage / set up

7:33 PM
@Goatmale the resume is being passed up the chain...

@Goatmale I really dislike kix
I just don't get the value in it

@ewwhite You are the best.

@Goatmale Trying... plus I want that finder's-fee!
So who wants to hear about today's production disaster?

@ewwhite a disaster story is always good.

@ewwhite You typed write mem again didn't you?

7:38 PM
@ewwhite were seagulls involved?

It'll make you scratch you head and go all LOL WUT?!?

@ewwhite Please be an AD story. Please be an AD story.
You need to "free up" a windows engineer position :p

@MDMarra it's ALWAYS an AD story.

@MDMarra I think the best thing about the product is that it groups policies by things like "Folder Redirection" and "Printers" settings and then you can drill down and apply them to groups and users rather the doing it the other way around with GPOs.

@Goatmale WMI filtering or item-level targetting do this natively though. As does security filtering.
That stuff was sorely missing in the 2000 and early 2003 era though

7:40 PM
Well, let's see how much I can reveal...

We have a bunch of kix startup scripts here and I was like WHYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY, but no one wants me to touch them so fuck it. Not my problem

@MDMarra Yeah, still easier. Plus it has really really great logging.

@MDMarra We use KIX to map our printers, don;t use it for anything else.

Dude Item-Level targeting is amazing, too bad it only works on Preference items

We have maybe 5 GPOs for our entire domain.

7:42 PM
Okay... so client has filesystem problem on virtual machine.
Aborting journal on device dm-2.
ext3_abort called.
EXT3-fs error (device dm-2): ext3_journal_start_sb: Detected aborted journal
Remounting filesystem read-only
EXT3-fs error (device dm-2): ext3_lookup: unlinked inode 49163 in dir #2
EXT3-fs error (device dm-2): ext3_lookup: unlinked inode 49163 in dir #2
EXT3-fs error (device dm-2): ext3_lookup: unlinked inode 49163 in dir #2
It's a virtual machine in a vSphere 4.1 cluster on Isilon NFS storage.

@ewwhite lemme guess. Running UDP w/ async?

I look at the logs inside the VM...
Dec  5 01:57:20 prodmessage1v kernel: : connection1:0: ping timeout of 5 secs expired, recv timeout 5, last rx 6530895026, last ping 6530904406, now 6530909806
Dec  5 01:57:20 prodmessage1v kernel: : connection1:0: detected conn error (1011)
Dec  5 01:57:20 prodmessage1v kernel: : connection1:0: detected conn error (1011)
Dec  5 01:57:21 prodmessage1v iscsid: Kernel reported iSCSI connection 1:0 error (1011) state (3)
Dec  5 01:57:24 prodmessage1v iscsid: connection1:0 is operational after recovery (1 attempts)
So to recap... Linux VM running in VMWare on top of NFS... Errors inside of Linux VM for a filesystem that went real-only because of an iSCSI connection problem.
So um... there's an iSCSI volume to the same SAN attached directly to the VM.
It's weird, but not completely crazy...
But I notice that the iSCSI-based filesystem with errors won't remount read/write...

@ewwhite Same filesystem mounted in two places?

and that it wasn't in /etc/fstab
So, WTF...
I call client, and they explain that there are TWO virtual machines running this messaging application. They're on the same vSphere cluster. They have them running active/passive and there's an iSCSI-based EXT3-formatted volume that is shared between the two VM's...
So I say, "but ext3 is not a cluster filesystem... you can't mount it on two servers at the same time..."
"Why are you doing this?"
Client replies, "Well, we manually mount the iSCSI ext3 volume on the active server. We just want to have the other server running so we have some high-availability"
So the corruption is a result of janky iSCSI mapping and sharing of a non-clustered filesystem.
But the real problem is a customer trying to make their own high availability on virtual machines, rather than using the features provided by their VMWare infrastructure (it's Enterprise Plus licensing on a 15-host cluster).

@ewwhite . . . . WHAAAAAAAAT?!?!

7:57 PM
@ewwhite - the stupid, it burns

It's the Cloud... we give people the power to destroy their own applications and systems.

@ewwhite Heh. Well, if it makes you feel better, I know some consultants who tried that routine back in 2007 back before I told them that they could not do so.
@ewwhite The Atlanta office of a certain telecom consulting company that got started in Israel.
I'll let you connect those dots

Cloud iOX! EC2 iSCSI targets over xterm. Quick, to the patent office!

Following the call, the client asked if there was a better filesystem that they could use to share storage for this application...

and you replied "anything"

8:03 PM
@ewwhite Did you say ResierFS?

Veritas and then charge them 50% over MSRP as a stupid tax.

Ah... all those ResierFS jokes are enough to make you die laughing

Honestly, I don't see the need for this high availability in a 15-node ESXi cluster backed by a SAN..

@RobM I don't get it.. mind explaining?

@Goatmale dude killed his wife.

Dude's got the crazy eyes. Just a matter of time.....

We're real short of staff at the moment, got a LOT of illness. So I was covering the helpdesk.

Got a complaint from the person who manages that. Apparently saying "You want WHAT" and then laughing for 5 minutes isn't the ITIL approved method of dealing with lecturers who want local admin access to their classroom PC, even if it *IS* technically accurate.

Well, it's the frustrating thing about this cloud stuff. We cannot really tell people how to do things.

cloud.. always makes me worried

The same client has Linux VM's that have NFS mounts, iSCSI mounts, CIFS mounts, old kernels and there's no rhyme or reason... All of this on a single VM...

8:08 PM
oh dear

Oh wow, he killed his mail order bride.
nerd life

Anywho, the guy sitting next to me on the plane has an iPad Mini... I want to ask him about it... But I feel inadequate with my regular iPad 2...

@ewwhite Oh honey. It's not because of the iPad.

(And why is my iPad getting 3-bars on Verizon at 35,000 feet?)

I might get a real tablet for christmas- a nexus :P

8:19 PM
Nexus 7 is great.

@Basil ServerFault doesn't seem to be much of an iPhone/iPad place...

@Goatmale Agreed. I've been really happy with mine. The size is great.

Running a custom ROM?

Negative.

What about apple integrations and slickness? No longer appealing?

8:21 PM
I haven't seen a point.
@ewwhite Apple is like Cisco. It integrates flawlessly with itself. While I use a MacBook, I don't have any other Apple devices, nor do I use any of their ecosystem.

I think I'm part of the cult. But I'm at the age where these devices are just tools. I don't get a hard-on for the newest Apple devices anymore.

@ewwhite Plenty of us have Apple gear, sir

@MDMarra buy more.

I have one of everything already

Stock price needs to go back up :P

8:25 PM
Now the guy next to me is double-fisting with an iPad mini in one hand, and an iPhone 5 in the other!
4

@MDMarra MOAR!

you filthy stockholder

@MDMarra I showered this morning thank you.

@ewwhite No doubt. Now, if I had bought an iPhone back when they were the smartphone industry it might have been different. I didn't get one until about a year ago.

@ewwhite I'm not a cultist, but there are no other tablets that do what I want as well as an iPad, and if I'm using the iPad I may as well use the iPhone.
And for all its shit problems OS X is a tolerable desktop OS.

8:29 PM
So what's the short argument for moving away from iPhone/iPad?

@ewwhite Android is cool :)

I so wanted Android to work out as a tablet OS. So far I have not been impressed, but I'm going to try a Nexus or Galaxy before I completely chuck it and go iPad. =/

(That said I'm getting an iPhone five to keep my 4 year iPhone streak alive)

I kinda want to try out a surface

Jelly Bean blows the other versions out of the water.

But no fucking way will I pay for one

8:30 PM
@ewwhite People that like to dick around with the OS on a granular level - Ie people that do not have enough productive tasks in their life and want to waste oxygen. =P

@voretaq7 For my purposes, I've definitely found it to be the best desktop OS.

@MDMarra They're actually really nice. Metro still sucks, but is tolerable on a tablet, and it is a very nice tablet.

I was watching Gossip Girl, er..., TV
8
And noticed the Surface displayed prominently...

@ewwhite Sticky request
1 min ago, by ewwhite
I was watching Gossip Girl, er..., TV
@WesleyDavid: make it sticky! Wait, not like that...

@ScottPack it's the worst desktop OS out there, except for all the others.

8:34 PM
@voretaq7 Your face is #terrible

Same for last weekend's Suburgatory episode... The plot involved the main character falling I love with her tablet as a replacement for a love interest... See: news.softpedia.com/news/…

I actually had a friend write a screenplay with that premise.

Is there any way to troubleshoot SCCM that's better than taking it out back and shooting it for causing trouble?

It's quickly becoming my least favorite... thing... which is quite the achievement.

@ewwhite I'm really not happy about the things that broke in iOS6. I use mapping ALL THE TIME and not having map search and navigation is a dealbreaker.

@ScottPack Everything is terrible.

8:36 PM
@ewwhite I'm seriously considering dropping $500-600 later this Spring for an unlocked high-end Android and ditching the iPhone.

Yeah, the mapping is shit.

That's one thing Android has over IOS. The Android Navigation app is better then any GPS device i've ever used.

Microsoft's Surface ads look interesting.

oh TomTom
Why do ou think you need to reinitialize the arrays? Backup, replace one set if discs, let array rebuild etc. Pls why the heck do you ue Backup Exec? Did no one explain you how to use the sql server included backup mechanisms? — TomTom 17 mins ago

You can do better, people

8:39 PM
@BrentPabst My downvote comment arrow isn't showing up for that comment. Someone should tell mSO.

@HopelessN00b I'm starting to wonder if TomTom IS anonymous

Heh, someone shoul @ him on that.

"Dude, it's getting hard to tell you apart from /b/... might wanna look into doing something about that before it becomes a permanent condition..."

I can explain the Gossip Girl viewing!! It's how I conducted my research on New York before taking this job!

@ewwhite Is that your excuse for Sex and the City as well?

@CryptoJones Back to admin trainee program. You can always upgrade one by one, then, once all discs in an array are larger size, expand the raid group. Why do you even think you can not plug in a LARGER replacement disc? — TomTom 32 secs ago
@voretaq7 Can we get some mod clean-up on aisle serverfault.com/questions/455428/…? TomTom forgot to eat lunch today.

8:47 PM
@ScottPack I've walked by Carrie's West Village apartment a few times...

@ewwhite Do did you proper move up there?

@ewwhite My wife loves Gossip Girl. I tried watching it once just to spend time with her, and I literally hate it more than I love my wife, and I really love my wife.

What? MSF has a /review? Can believe I missed that.

@ScottPack Nope. Still live in Chicago.

@ewwhite cool

8:51 PM
@Basil I've now seen all of the seasons in a 3-month period, thanks to wife.

@ewwhite whipped!

@TomTom did you forget to eat lunch today? You know your blood sugar makes you crazy when you don't eat enough! — Brent Pabst 1 min ago

Q: How fast is 127.0.0.1?

user55029I wonder it it is tied to my NIC at all or if the OS or driver intercepts and immediately returns data sent to the loopback address? Do the electrons actually travel to my NIC then the NIC returns them?

8:55 PM
ಠ_ಠ

@MDMarra That's an interesting theory question.

@MDMarra In Windows it depends on whether or not its 127.0.0.1 or 127.0.0.1.

@MDMarra Isn't that a PowerUser question?

Needs to be on a Computer Science SE site
not sure if that exists or not though

@BrentPabst There is, but that wouldn't fit there
Shit's all math
2

9:00 PM
@MDMarra Right, it's Computer Science.

@BrentPabst fix'd

@voretaq7 grassy ass!

@BrentPabst ...at least the dog wiped?

Math is for bros

Math is for virgins.

9:01 PM
@voretaq7 That's my shitty spanish for gracias.
@Goatmale @MDMarra Fuck math.

@MDMarra ...the bros in my math classes were funny
they're cute when they're totally not getting the concept of computing the area of a rotating solid using integration...

fucking nerds

Goddamnit I hate when I forget a password I set 30 seconds ago.

@voretaq7 That's what the TI-92 is for.

I want one of those new TI n-spire things

9:08 PM
HP48 GX, fools

i still use my TI-84 SILVER
like a boss
i found out there was an update since i used it in high school, called MathPrint
makes stuff so much easier...

Did anybody read about the Portal for TI-83/84 project?

@ScottPack HP50
@tombull89 hah - awesomesauce.
@David n-spire... you mean the 92 in a different case? :P

I actually answered a question today. yeah me!
now to take @pauska 's advice and upvote request whore that sucker here: serverfault.com/questions/455455/…
:)

9:27 PM
I'm finding that many of my questions are downvoted... I wonder if there's anything I can do to improve them, or if people just don't like my topics? (Examples: 1 2 3 4 5 )

@JoshGitlin The ones with overall positive scores, don't worry about. That's just some people being a bit picky because the question doesn't fit with their idea of a good question. They can go fuck themselves. Same for the neutral questions.

@MarkHenderson That's generally been my attitude :-) Thanks

The only one with a - score is #5 and that's because the same people who hate your other questions probably hate cpanel too. And to be fair, cpanel isn't a tool most sysadministrators use

Doesn't happen to me on SO, but it does here and sometimes on Arqade

@JoshGitlin don't use OSX or Cpanel?

9:29 PM
@Zoredache yeah, that's what I thought

Aside from all the cPanel questions (which I wouldn't have downvoted anyway)...

@MarkHenderson and @Zoredache, unfortunately I have to support cPanel as part of my syadmin responsibilities :-/

@JoshGitlin All the questions are well written, but cPanel is a taboo around here because of how many non-professionals ask questions about it.

@JoshGitlin I'm sorry. On the bright side, we may be able to help you find a better job.

I only get so many downvotes a day. I try to use them based on username. You just happened to picked today @JoshGitlin ;)

9:30 PM
@MichaelHampton I hear Adrian's work is hiring

@MarkHenderson There's only a very short list of my worst enemies I would send there.

@MarkHenderson do you hate @JoshGitlin that much?

while most sysadmins don't use it, many hosting servers have it (mostly for the users) and while I understand people don't like it, they should downvote based on quality not topic... anyway </rant> :-)
@MichaelHampton haha, I would love that

Any help here: serverfault.com/questions/455443/… would be much appreciated

@Zoredache LOL

9:32 PM
@MarkHenderson Heh. The padawan's clue train just arrived. He's looking too.

@infinity Get better hosting?

@Adrian You were probably the only reason he was staying. I remember when an older nurse at my wife's ward retired, about 1/2 the staff left with her, saying she was the only thing that made the ward bareable

@infinity Same results here, dig works, ping times out. Firewall?

@JoshGitlin Needs a tactical nuke.

@infinity Seriously. GoDaddy is halfway decent with domain names, but everything else they offer is utter crap.

9:34 PM
Agreed
We use them for domain name registration and I would love to switch away from them. Suggestions welcomed :-)

@MarkHenderson Yeah. He's a good kid. Wouldn't surprise me. And he's flexible enough that he can learn Windows on pretty much any help desk as he goes along. He's just having trouble getting in the door because his resume has Linux on it and it scares the Windows-only managers.
He'll do fine though.
@JoshGitlin Host your own?

@Adrian Sorry, that was unclear. I do host my own DNS. I use them as my registrar

@JoshGitlin Registrar = enom/namecheap, DNS = dnsmadeeasy.com - those two have never let me down.

brb. Lemme go check with my chaperone. She switched to somebody that she really likes.

The last time I switched away from GoDaddy, they ended up buying the registrar I'd switched to.

9:36 PM
lmao
And we have a ton of domain names so it would be difficult to switch

My "big sister" likes Hover.
Don't ask. You don't want to know.

@Adrian nice, thanks! I will check them out

And I fucking hate the new Gmail Iphone app.
The interface was totally written for iPad and it sucks for iPhone now.
I'm becoming seriously unhappy with this iPhone shit. Was fiddling with my Droid1(!) last night and I'd forgotten just how damn usable the apps and interface is.

@Adrian But an Android phone will never get you laid
I remember when I got the first iPhone they released here, the 3G, I literally had almost every woman at the place I worked at back then wanted to come and see it and touch it and ask about it. I swear to god, if I hadnt been engaged, it would have got me laid.

@MarkHenderson Sure it will.

9:44 PM
@MichaelHampton grindr excepted

What's grindr?

You know Hungry Hungry Hippos?
grindr is Horny Horny Homos.
5

@MichaelHampton Its an app that gay people use to organise a time and place to insert their penises into other random gay dudes

I could have lived without knowing that. Thanks guys.

@MarkHenderson s/gay people/"straight" closet cases/

9:45 PM
@voretaq7 Best analogy ever
@voretaq7 right right, just until they get a girlfriend. I remember.

@MarkHenderson Thank you, I'm rather fond of it myself. I've tried to get grindr marketing to pick up on it and pay me royalties.

@MichaelHampton Welcome to the Internet, the place where you can learn all the things you never wanted to know...

@MarkHenderson (then why do they keep calling me after they have one?!)

@voretaq7 You should ask their girlfriends, they might be able to find out for you!

@MarkHenderson Funny story.... :P
(ProTip: If I know your girlfriend trying to get your fling on with me is probably gonna ruin your relationship)

9:48 PM
@voretaq7 Ohh do tell

well that pretty much says it all ^^ :)

Haha
Succinct

@MichaelHampton Yeah I agree but it's my client's hosting not mine

@infinity In that case, you tell the client that GoDaddy are fucking morons and if they want their site to work, they should move it elsewhere. Be sure to put lots of emphasis on "fucking" and "morons".
2

@MichaelHampton fucking SEXIST morons.
gotta throw that in there to really galvanize the HR types.

9:56 PM
@Adrian Going from whatever was on my Droid X to jelly bean was such a freaking improvement.

Fair enough, although, I would debate that point ;-) insofar as I'm just looking for an opinion from someone wiser... is that unfair? (and I removed the comment about discussion in case it was misleading) — Brian 2 mins ago

Everything is more fast and fluid, the "window" button is great, feels like alt tabbing.
Chrome is also really really nice with their other devices tab, I can access my tablet, my phone, my home and work computer from any other device. Which can be a bad thing, depending on who is looking over my shoulder.

10:13 PM
Okay, I stole this from SU, but I still think it's awesome. blog.geeksaresexytech.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/11/…

Good news, the guy blocked Facebook with an ACL, but at least the employees can still get to all of @ewwhite's former employers. =D
All employees need to be able to have unrestricted access to the internet (I've blocked facebook with an ACL, but other than that, full access) Does this seem like a good idea to you? The employees can't spend their day figuratively jerking-off on Facebook, but they can literally spend their day jerking off on... well, yeah. That's just begging for a hostile workplace lawsuit too. — HopelessN00b 1 min ago

@Goatmale And THAT is why we don't go to Yahoo Answers

@Goatmale Cool. This thing isn't slow like my Droid, but the interface is getting unusable.
@MarkHenderson Pfft. I got no problems with the getting laided part. I'm not married, remember. =)

@HopelessN00b If you were feeling particularly nefarious you could mess with name resolution to have *.facebook.com return the appriate IP for productiveblog.tumblr.com

10:18 PM
Honestly, you wouldn't have this problem if you didn't buy a cat. Why don't you take it out of the box
Source(s):
Duh

Physics is fucked up.

@Goatmale Just quantum physics.

@HopelessN00b All physics is quantum when you get down to it...

Asking yahoo answers about Schrodinger's Cat is like going to Geek Squad with a sysadmin question.

@Goatmale Yeah, trolling is hilariously cruel.

10:30 PM
@HopelessN00b Weren't you telling me about a SAN from StarWind?

The technical chatter is all well and good, but I want to hear more about the Hungry Hungry Homos.

@Adrian Someone here is sure to tell your girlfriend about this.

@MichaelHampton She's quite aware of my warped sense of humor and my status as a officially-endorsed cabana boy.
