10:00 AM
Morning Ladies

Dan
10:37 AM
Do any of you guys know of some kind of source control that would work for a lone sysadmin on one machine? I do a little bit with VBS, C# and sometimes PHP and I could do with a solid way of keeping track

@Dan git without a doubt
have been using git for years now, for my personal projects and work projects

I tend to use Dropbox, but no doubt git would be better :)

Dan
Sweet - I'll be honest, it was in my head but I had.....no idea there was a windows version :D

Got a nice set up with public hosted (github) and private hosted repositories

Dan
That sounds absolutely spot on, Greg

10:40 AM
plus, github offer private hosting at a small fee if you don't want to set up your own server... although it's really REALLY easy

Dan
I take it it just runs on normal web technology?

why on earth would some random Russian IP address, claiming to be an iPhone be sending HTTP requests to SMTP servers on port 25?

@awoodland spammers :)

@Dan it can run via http but it has its own protocol which is much faster and more secure

@Greg bitbucket does it for free I think :)

10:45 AM
you can access your repositories at git://yourdomain.com:RepoName

Dan
@Greg Ah, sorry I think I'm a touch confused. I can download Git locally, no problem, but can I create a Github style affair on normal shared Linux hosting?

@BartDeVos what I don't get is what would they ever get other than "go away" from doing that? It's not long enough to be a buffer overflow attempt. Does some mail server seriously answer HTTP requests on port 25?

@Dan you can install git on a Linux machine to act as a git client, use github or similar for the git server

@awoodland From what I've seen, they aren't the brightest of people. Maybe they just f'ed up?

Dan
@Greg Right, okay - I take there's no self hosted version of Github? I've just checked their plans and I can't really put my stuff into the public domain

10:48 AM
does anyone here know if Office 2010 can activate itself with a MAK key?

@Dan Checkout Bitbucket :)

I seem to remember that you have to log on as administrator and manually activating office

Dan
It can definitely activate itself using KMS, if that helps

@Dan Indeed, that's how we do it :)

KMS is a bitch for us as we mostly use terminal services, since it doesnt activate until the client count is big enough

Dan
10:50 AM
No, but once you're done you're done. Create some VM's and force it - it's worth it in the end IMO
(Not that it answers your question, I admit)
And the client count is quite low for Office
@BartDeVos Brill, thanks

@Greg bitbucket.org provides free git hosting for private and public repos

cool

oh, :2949067 beat me to it
i suck at this chat

Dan
Sorry for the n00biness - is a "Repository" synonymous with "Project", or is it more about control?

[insert technologically impaired duck]
i meant @myself, not @Dan

Dan
10:54 AM
:D

I should just be quiet now

@KennyRasschaert Come and have lunch
looks like you need it

Good call

@Dan do you use the VAMT for managing the KMS host?

Dan
@pauska Depends on my mood, I tend to configure everything from the command line but I always install VAMT on to some server or another, mainly for managing clients though
I just love the "Fire and forget" nature of KMS, once it's up and running anyway.
As for clients (And this goes for Office especially) I add scripts to the build process somewhere which just does the necessaries

11:43 AM
ok
well, I just got to wrap my head around it
I still havent figured out where you would use VAMT and where you would use the vbscript.. I added keys via VAMT, but they wont show up in the vbscript etc

Dan
VAMT, to me, is for one off stuff or for checking / testing. But then I prefer hands off processes once the system is installed
Which bit of KMS are you struggling with?

@pauska Hi, how'd you find the chairs?

@Chopper3 the reseller you pointed me at. A bit steep price, our CFO is not happy
so I'll probably have to get another chair :p

:( sorry

USD $1655 per chair including shipping and assembly

11:55 AM
Oh you should shop around, I'm sure you could do better than that, did you just try the embody or any of the other models?

just the embody for now
they can provide the same chair you have for less money, but with less ergonomic features.. and that kind of defeats the whole idea

hm
needs to go replace his gym ball at some point

12:29 PM
Worst answer ever I reckon; serverfault.com/a/348451/1435

12:40 PM
@Chopper3 Looks like spam to me

could be but the question's about synology and those links are to them???

12:55 PM
is it time to go home yet

@RobMoir I was just thinking the same....

1:08 PM
feel free to improve the grammar here, for those of you who understand what this question is about.. im lost

Q: find command + exe status diff from 0 when file not found

Eytanhow to enable find command to print exe status diff from 0 when find command not find the file? according to my example when I try to find the test1.txt file , $? set to 0 but I expect to get value diff from 0 because the file not found [root@om-1 tmp]# touch test.txt [root@om-1 tmp]# find /...

1:24 PM
Why do people change there mind at the last second....

@t1nt1n 50% of the time it's because they're women

@chop
@Chopper3 directors...... (Male) supposed to be going live with a CMS tomorrow. Changed there mind on the conten layout...

sounds about right to be honest

@Dan Right now I just gotta find 5 servers/clients to install office on to get KMS working
@Dan two of them are in production, so that big activation error that normal users get is not going to be welcomed..

pfo
1:40 PM
oh man those netapp service guys are so horrible
can't properly reproduce bugs even if you tell them step by step on your system what's wrong.

Filed a bug report with a package in Ubuntu on 10-19-11. Still not even acknowledged as an issue. Bleh...

pfo
@BartSilverstrim forget filing Ubuntu bugs - that is insane!

Yeah, it's Linux! You're supposed to fix that shit yourself!

pfo
no, actually not.

Hell, we have Autozone in our town. Fix your own damn car!

pfo
1:42 PM
but ubuntu is extremely understaffed and underskilled

The packages are maintained by their own maintainers.
This was a bug in Samhain.
Or a glitch.
I just checked the page again and there's not even an acknowledgement or confirmation of the issue.
Nearly three months...sheesh.

@BartSilverstrim WONTFIX

I also posted to bugs

WONTACK

they are too busy fixing unity

1:46 PM
nothing ever happened to them
both SSL/encryption-stuff, they don't mind

Complain about Ubuntu package bugs. Never fixed. Complain about "blog" link over chat link. Never fixed. I will say that at least here they will take time to mock you on Meta if you complain so you at least know you exist.

@pauska I still don't get why they didn't stay with gnome 2 or even waited for gnome 3. Unity just isn't ... functional

well, I don't honestly care, as I never use GUI on any *nix
what bugs me is that they are losing focus.. LOTS of companies are using the LTS editions for servers, and bug reports are usually classified as "this works fine on my desktop install, bug invalid"
like the vmware tools dependency bullshit

@pauska I like xubuntu, just super light for my netbook :)

I'm seriously considering switching back to Debian

1:51 PM
I've switched back to debian ever since we had a bug with Xen, they knew for over a year and did not want to fix it. Upgrades would cause the whole Xen system to break.
I don't really get why went with ubuntu in the first place.

I remember why I switched.. PPA's
they are wonderful
but you can get around them

Indeed, also we recently had problems with broken locales, on some machines we still can't seem to get it fixed :(

odd...workplace filter is blocking the SF homepage.

@tombull89 tunneling ftw ?

@tombull89 So you managed to get a workplace HR policy created just for you? Congrats!

1:59 PM
It'll pass in a few hours...probably picking up a word or two the filter doesn't like.

Nice. "Filter by Improbability Drive."

Oops, wrong windows

@BartDeVos Write ALL THE CHANGES!

@ScottPack ".ssh/authorized_keys" E212: Can't open file for writing
Oops, forgot to create the dir

Try Harder.

2:03 PM
Oh, Windows... You know I want to look at a long list of occasionally very wide AD object properties. Why do I still have to use that tiny, fixed-size dialogue box you've been carting around since 1993? Why?

@SmallClanger Becuase Microsoft hates change

@t1nt1n Not true. They released ADAC, which sucks even more

I dont think Win7 liked that comment. It just decied to reboot its self.

I'm off :)
bye :)
:q!

2:19 PM

pfo
no such thing out there
i know the pain of GARP

Dan
@pauska did you get your KMS stuff activated? Just seen your response

2:35 PM
What is it about Amazon that encourages reviews of books while B&N seems to be almost completely bereft of reviews?

@Dan Building dummy vm's to get the activation count to 5 now.. :p
@Dan: Do you know if it's possible to lower the activation count at a later time (removed/dead clients)?

Dan
@pauska Not to my knowledge, no, why would you want to? You just leave KMS to plod along. Also, is this for Office only? Cos you may want to get your OS KMS key up to the required count while you're in the VMing mood
Though bear in mind if you change the key you'll need to start from scratch

@Dan Just to keep track of clients I guess, but it's not important. We only have OS licenses for Datacenter, and I've installed the KMS key for that.

Dan
@pauska Ah. It wouldn't really be reliable anyway, cos everytime you rebuilt and sysprepped a machine it'd add to the count with its new CMID

2:52 PM
[main client] are VERY slow at taking on new code versions etc., they're actually better at switching on totally new code/products than updating existing ones (unless there's a security concern, they're good for that) - well tonight, between 0200-0600am they're moving to openssl 1.0.0e across my entire platform to support the AES-NI hardware in 56xx-series xeons - woo

'sup freaks?

Dan
Yo
C'mon Virgin, I want my 50Mb broadband and I want it NOW

@pfo: Ya, we will probably have to bitch at MS
Custom CSS chrome extension makes me sane again ^^

@KyleBrandt wtf?

The system-notification bar going across my screen trips some OCD

3:02 PM
Also, you look like @ChrisS with your avatar

Instead of ^^

haha

hello masochists

do you fullscreen your browser on an enormous screen or something?

@KyleBrandt yeah, that would irritate me somewhat too.

3:03 PM
@MDMarra: Yup

Got ya
I never run my browser maximized

@TylerShads @MDMarra, what's this, some sort of insult-chat-when-you-join thing?

So I miss out on seeing odd things like that

Actually, I could full screen the browser across both screens...

@tombull89 We didn't invent it, we just play by the rules
@KyleBrandt extention?

3:05 PM

@tombull89 shut up luser
@KyleBrandt wtf?

Kyle's rubbing it in that he's a telecommuter with a setup better than 99% of us.

@KyleBrandt How big can you make that with [ctrl]+[+]?

Hey when or how can you actually vote to close ?

@TylerShads He fullscreens is browser, lol. So cute
@LucasKauffman 3k rep

pfo
3:06 PM
@LucasKauffman 3K rep

aah explains a lot :p

That has a list of privs and when they're unlocked
Damnit, @jscott
too quick for me

:p anyway thank you both ^^

Speaking of, I still don't have an answer to my PowerShell question, @jscott ;)
I think you misunderstood what I was trying to do

3:07 PM
I should be studying instead of reviewing questions on serverfault >.<

Studying for what?

Is being a moderator really rewarding? I'm looking through the nominations and trying to get a feel.

@MDMarra Sorry, I probably am misunderstanding....

I should be working but that dosent stop me.

@KyleBrandt, I thought that was three screens in a funky setup. Something like a 23" with two verticle 19s" next to it.

3:09 PM
@MDMarra Never mind, got it

@MDMarra I added a change, today, that will only list the top-level directories which contain files unmodified in one year...

@MDMarra Some obligatory course I needed to take in college, they force you to go to seminars, some interesting, some are the cure for insomnia and they will be asking questions about it. It's just lame stuff

@tombull89 I used to have a 22", a 23" and a 19". Since it was spread across two video cards X was having fits. So I opted to just drop the 3rd screen.

But my reading comprehension is not the best, I have to look at things a few times to get it right.

@tombull89: Changed out my oddball 3x setup for 2x30

3:10 PM
@jscott Basically, departments can request shares to share/store files with other departments. Some of these shares become abandoned over time. What I want to do is see if anything under each top level dir has been touched in the last year
I don't want individual folders that meet that criteria, I want to know if anything under each top-level dir has been touched in a year. If it hasnt, I only want the top level dir returned once

I have 1X24 1X19 and a 19" Laptop connected via Syngery.

@KyleBrandt is that not too big? I've got two 19" which is fine...but then again I'm easily pleased.

@jscott Does it descend into the subfolders to look?

@MDMarra Ok, yeah, the edit today searches everything under a, b, c and will only list the top-level is everything under it is older then one year. I'm actually running it against a staff-free-for-all share we have here.

3:11 PM
@t1nt1n What OSes are you using synergy with?

@jscott oh sweet
I'll take a peek

Win7.

@MDMarra Yes, the first grab doesn't recurse -- just get an array of top-level dirs. then recurse each of those, and report back if everything is unmod in one year.

Sorry its not Syngery.. That fucked up its Input Director @ScottPack

At least it's not overkill like The Big Stack Board.
For those that haven't seen it:

3:12 PM
@t1nt1n Ah, yeah. For all Windows I've heard that's pretty good.

^^ Ya that is a wee bit obscene :-P

its rellary good

@t1nt1n I was doing Linux and Win7 for a while, with Linux being the synergy server. I would have occasional weirdness with Win7 accepting the mouse but not keyboard input. Rather annoying.

@jscott I thought that I tried something like your current answer on my own yesterday, but I must have screwed something up
I'll run it now and let you know

3:14 PM
@MDMarra It may be able to be optimized with a break on finding the first mod < -1.year, but right now it works, just a bit slowly... :)
We've a 1.8TB share here I'm running it against... Been running since I made the edit this AM.

@jscott I'm OK with that. It's only about 200GB that I'm running it against, and it's being run against an offline copy of the share
It looks good so far, thanks!
I'll accept your answer when it finishes successfully

@MDMarra Everyone secretly wishes they were me... Except for the 2x30", I need some of that.

@MDMarra No worries, I though it was a useful thing as well. Please don't hesitate to let me know what might need to be changed/fixed.

@jscott Usually I'm pretty handy with PS. This was one of those times where you go so far down the wrong road, but the results are so close that you think you can fix it
In this case, I needed a second set of eyes

trello is free?

3:26 PM
What's trello?

Joel's newest pet project turned web app I think.

@BartSilverstrim I obviously wanted someone to spoon feed me the answer

I've heard him promoting it in passing but hadn't looked at it before.
Go to the trello.com site and click the video. It's about 6 minutes that explains everything.
except that it's really free or not.

@BartSilverstrim looks cool, is it completely free ?

That's what I was asking.
How is it monetized? Maybe @KyleBrandt knows.

3:33 PM
@KyleBrandt ASK SPOLSKY IF TRELLO IS FREE
please :)

Free... for how long?
Trello is free forever. We may add pay-only features in the future, but everything that's free today will be free tomorrow and forever. Also, we'll not make a for-pay feature that forces you to compromise on privacy, security, or portability. Those are built-in. The maker of Trello, Fog Creek Software, has been profitable for years on the strength of its other products. We can afford to foot the bill. We have no outside investors pushing us to make a quick buck on Trello by selling out our users or getting you hooked before jacking up the price. Trello is free.

That would be @Zypher's department since they're in the same building.
...what if he steals my to do list?!

Trello? What is this crazyness
2

O_O NOW what did we do?

@BartSilverstrim He can steal all the lists he want, as long as he get the to-do item done.

3:36 PM
@PeterGrace Your boss's product :)
Answer us honestly
Does it suck?

@PeterGrace ...crazyness...nay, madness. MADNESS? THIS. IS. SERVERFAULT *kicks into server room*

oh god no.
It fucking rocks.
Seriously, it's like game-changingly awesome, and I'm not even speaking as someone who drank the kool-aid.

@MDMarra: We have been using it for quite a while (Joel even demo'd the sysadmin board during the release announcement). It is a good fit for a lot of scenarios

@PeterGrace How does trello make you feel Peter ?

It fills a need in an elegant way that I've had for a long time, which is a way to share simple to-do lists in an intuitive interface.

Q: Building up a network structure

iUngiI have the following structure: So in this case I have two different networks. What device can handle this structure, also PoE WiFi. In this case I have two measurement system attached in the PC B and PC C. The PC A is collecting the data and sending to the "master computer" through internet. ...

I don't use it at home yet, but I could easily see me and my wife using it for to-do items.

Dan
What on earth?

Might adopt it then for some of the student projects

If you want to go all-out in your project management with dependencies and links etc it isn't what you want. But if you want something more minimal Trello is great

Yeah, Kyle's right -- it's not for ridiculously in-depth project management
there aren't card interdependencies or anything.

3:38 PM
@Dan wait what ?
@PeterGrace You think it will be good to replace my tons of post its ?

@Dan he means...a wireless router? with PoE?

We have this horror-show thing BaseCamp and like three separate products to manage different things...

Induction !

Dan
@tombull89 Haha, I nearly forgot about a wireless router :D

@Dan seen the comment?

Dan
3:46 PM
@tombull89 Yeah -it's not exactly the question he asked, is it? :D

serverfault.com/questions/348521/… Does anyone understand what he is talking about ?

not really, adds a bit more to it than expected. I thought it was a home or basic office network, apparently not.
detail is everything.

Dan
Does anyone else struggle to switch between their 'commercial' and 'home' heads? I kind of forget about things like Wireless Routers and the likes when I'm on this site

WOOHOO ELECTION \o/
2

@RebeccaChernoff election time?

3:51 PM
@RebeccaChernoff 10 candidates already... Do you know how many there were last year?

19
A: How many moderators do we need?

WesleyDavidUpvote if you think we should have three new moderators.

@PeterGrace Nominations run for 6 more days.

@LucasKauffman Yep. Definitely good for post-it replacement, but it does have the downside of being internet-connection.
@LucasKauffman Err. You need to be connected to the intertubes to use it.
ALSO, there's an iphone app for it, but no android app yet.

@jscott the election pages are public. serverfault.com/election/1

@RebeccaChernoff Am I eligible to run for election? :)

3:52 PM
@PeterGrace Was just about to ask the smartphone capabilities, just adopted it for two projects, might be nice to write a review about it and spread it further.

@RebeccaChernoff Thanks! Couldn't figure out how to get there.
@RebeccaChernoff Oddly that page says "2012 Moderator Elections" not 2011, but it shows the 2011 results?!
