@SmallClanger Cabana bars were the zenith of mankind's endevours - sadly missed - once made a giant one in a cake tin

gone off burgers. Subway or quiznos for me thanks

@Chopper3 the just opened a greggs down the road to compete with the sayers

I miss Subway. A lot. No hope for one around here.

to be fair its not hard to make your own sub either

wow - when I work from home I'll often ask my wife to pop into a local bakers if she's going out - they do a CTM pie!

12:03 PM
ctm?

sorry, chicken tikka masalla

Sayers do that in a pastie

In a pie? I can't decide if thats great or awful

it's amazing, better cold too which is odd

Just before I head for lunch myself, I'm going to leave people with this, in case you're not hungry enough: guardian.co.uk/lifeandstyle/wordofmouth/2010/apr/07/…

12:04 PM
sayers is northern only isn't it?

mmm corned beef, red onion and salad cream sandwich
the lunch of champions

would work for me

I buy a lot of stuff on behalf of my customers so get taken out by vendors way too much - they know I love Goucho's steaks but sometimes it can be too much, I was in the unfortunate situation of turning down a lovely meal there the other day just because I've got sick/bored of them - how bloody decadent is that!

very

for sure

12:08 PM
I was shaking my head as I was saying the words

so the trip to mcdonalds was by way of penance?

it may have turned out that way

working late

12:28 PM
@Chopper3: So it's finally decided.. going to use VRF+OSPF across the network internally.. I'm scared :(

if you're scared now just wait until you go into the comms room one day after its all setup and find a sock on top of one of the cabs with googly eyes and a mouth drawn on it

touchè

;-)

brb, rearranging one of my mod votes.......

scary projects are the best kind though, in all seriousness... that way you know you're doing something brave and learning from it. I was terrified when we moved to our new campus and I got tasked to move the server rooms
heh

12:36 PM
thats basically a demo of the logical layout
there are 78 remote offices :|

@pauska nice

@Chopper3: RLY? Be honest and critical!
Have I overcomplicated this? :P

that will keep you busy for a while then

nearly 2 months.. primary access is being installed 18. feb, last office is connected at 31st march.
plus of course configuration/design internally up to the 18th

@RobertMoir Would you care to save me the trouble of googling and giving me an American translation of salad cream?
I am waiting to find that out before I decide if a sayers is awesome or not.

12:42 PM
i honestly don't know
never seen it in the states
its a very very thick salad dressing I guess.
Try and imagine mayo with vinegar and mustard added and then thickened up. That sounds awful, so its a bad description of what salad cream tastes like but its the best way I can explain what it looks like

Yeah, it looks like it was an attempt to replicate mayonnaise when rationing was in effect.
Hey, vinegar and mustard might make mayonnaise palatable :)

heh

My hijacking is over. Back to your infrastructure design.

its funny really how many differences there are between countries that have a common language and all

1:12 PM
@pauska -sorry, was on a confcall, I could spend days going through this with you but to be honest I trust you, you're a smart guy who knows your environment - go ahead
@RobertMoir I've lived over there for about 3-4 years out of 41 so have obviously picked up loads of their words, terms, likes/dislikes - the lot - which unfortunately means that sometimes I sound like a pretentious dick over here when they fall into conversation - such as how my natural instinct is to ask for the 'check' instead of the 'bill' - odd eh

Q: How to join a domain over VPN?

JLI connect to company VPN and I can join the default domain without problems. In office infrastructure we have a seperate domain which is setup as a test environment. I can RDC into servers on this test domain, and I can ping the DC of this test domain. What I would like to do is get my loca...

SO want to respond with "do it in-router" but I don't think he'd appreciate it :)

1:36 PM
Mmm, that corned beef reminds me of a Reuben, might have to find one for lunch today.

@Chopper3 So what I'm hearing is that with judicious use of both British and American colloquialisms you can sound like a pretentious dick on two continents?
@ChrisS I find that whenever I go to a restaurant with a reuben that I must order it. The best I've had so far was at some greasy spoon in upstate New York.

@packs I prefer mine not to be slathered in grease/butter/etc; the dressing is usually enough to keep it from being dry.

@packs Correct!
:)

I must say, @Chopper3, that is pretty dang impressive. The best I've managed is pretentious here, and a douche on your end.

I've always liked America whenever I've visited, I have to say, lots of family and friends over there so I understand most of the differences in language, made more of an effort after spending 30 mins talking about something only to find afterwards the conversation was about two entirely different things depending on who you asked...

1:39 PM
There's a deli down the street that makes a pretty good one, might be where I'll head for lunch. They make it panini style.

haha

@ChrisS I agree. I've found that the real trick is to properly balance the dressing and krout. I'm coming to believe that to be an NP-HARD problem

mmm a reuben would have been nice for lunch

@packs Bah, lots of both. I'm of German and Polish heritage so kapusta is a normal part of my diet.

@ChrisS Ah, right. Yank. I forgot :)

1:45 PM
@packs I'm still amused at time when chatting with people who are literally a 1/4 of the world away, and we take it for granted that it's quick and easy, then we're occasionally surprised when someone turns out to be nearly in our backyard.

uh huh

:) new toys :)

ooo whatcha get now ?

I'm sure they're nicer than my new toys.

some new version of intel's E7 4870 chip, the last lot burnt out - these are a new, supposedly cooler, stepping

1:52 PM
i just got an emergency maintenance notice from our ISP... wheee

@ChrisS Yeah, that's how I felt when I found out Warner was only slightly more than an hour away from me.

How come we don't have any SAs in chat from down south??

@Chopper3 nifty
speaking of new toys goes to dell's site to track mine

I know there's one from Florida, but it's not my place to out them.

we had some of the 12 core ones but they struggled to stay up for longer than most boot sequences

1:57 PM
@ChrisS Oo! There's one from NC, but again, the same. And another from Florida.
Wow, there's bunches. They just keep themselves hidden. Possibly biding their time for your next invasion.

Pft, if they're planning an invasion I'll go all Master Chief on them!

@ChrisS I was actually referring to a second War of Northern Aggression. Which, according to my family in Alabama, is still the most correct term.

Good afternoon fellow stack exchangers

g'morning Mister IT Guru

good afternoon

2:02 PM
I think I'll change my greets to Good <insert time zone appropriate greeting here>, how are you guys :)

War of Northern Aggression? As in the Civil War?

I'm trying to build redundancy into windows 2003 servers ... almost sounds like a oxymoron type of thing

@MisterITGuru Good ${TIME_OF_DAY}
@BartSilverstrim Affirmative.

@packs Ah ..... much better!

@packs: That's still a popular notion in the south? I thought that died out at least 50 years ago.

2:04 PM
@BartSilverstrim If only....

Last I knew the actual participants in that war were...y'know...no longer among the living.
I thought that sort of attitude was a parody of southerners.

@BartSilverstrim That makes two of us! +1

@BartSilverstrim You know what they say, they can't parody you if you parody yourself.

Since...again...they kinda' weren't there and last I knew there was no southern vs. northern issues with our economies being so interlinked.

The south doesn't have much we would want to invade for, except nice weather.. and if we wanted that all that bad Mexico would be an easier target anyway.

2:06 PM
Wow. Just...wow. Southerners are weird. It's like they're all pissed off at people who didn't even know they exist today.

Well, it's nice to meet you guys - I'm from London, UK! And we're doing better in our economic downturn that you lot! nah nah, naaah naaah naahh! So far, we are only earning 12% less that we should be given inflation etc :)
by the way, that last post was sarcasm - we're all screwed :)

@MisterITGuru Hah! Officially our inflation was 0% last year. Suck it!

@packs NOOO!!!!! hehe!
0%??, oh, and I like the way you put in the word... officially!

well you know about statistics
100% of them are made up

Is anyone else in here from the UK?
Zypher - WRONG! 98% of them are made up
The other 2% are just wrong

2:09 PM
Statistics -- The only science where two experts can use the same data, apply the same methods, and come to completely contrary conclusions.

@MisterITGuru @Chopper3 is from you're side o the pond

@packs ha! That's a good quote! I will steal that, repackage it, and pretend I came up with it myself - Just like every good politician!

@MisterITGuru You just missed them all, must be lunch time over there.

Man

A: Sql Server 2008 - Cannot connect to local default instance

smarty3010"Try your hostname followed by the instancename, for instance PC\SQLEXPRESS" This worked for me too...!!!

@KyleBrandt "Worked for me!" Those are my favorites.

2:11 PM
haha

Just found out that hitting delete without this text box having the focus is most definatly a wtf just happened moment! hehe!

@MisterITGuru redundancy isn't that hard to get in 2kx servers

@ChrisS Lunch time? Lunch time is for whimps! hehe!

@MisterITGuru Tea time then?

in a strange way I quite liked the "Haz got mi sum ps3 gamez ???" one from yesterday - refreshingly moronic instead of the usual dull idiocy

2:13 PM
@Zypher I'm listening ......
@Ch
?
oops

ha, well what services are you trying to make redundant?
and ... what's your budget :)

GC :)

Dear developers: how is the answer to a poorly written command-line utility a friggin' web interface?

Basically, when I kill my main domain controller, I don't want anyone to know

well ... you're problem is going to be your FSMO roles, not GC - you can add more GC servers in sites and services it's a checkbox

2:14 PM
@Cakemox - the answer to a poorly written command-line utility is a better system admin! - hehe!

I'm sure you DO want to know, you just don't want service impacted

Just kidding @Cak

Sam
@MisterITGuru i'm in the UK

Oh, by anyone, I mean end users, I am the overlord of all my networks, nothing happens without my say so! :)

Oh, we see your bike handlebars are misaligned. Here's a tank.

2:15 PM
@KyleBrandt, we need a filter for short posts containing the word "me" or "you" and rep<20

stuff like you PDC Master is where timesync starts

@Zypher I did that! And I selected another DC to host the GC too, and yet, when I take down the main DC, everything seizes up - oh wells - I better make sure that the roles have all actually transfered as expected.
Hello @Sam, how are you!? Good to know that I'm not alone!
damn auto complete is not the same as IRC! Must remember that!
Hello @Sam
DAMN

@MisterITGuru There's an edit button for that...

hehe - I'm using my IRC shortcuts, and sending digital spammage to this chat room!
Awesome! i didn't know I could do that!

@MisterITGuru I've spotted your ID around recently - with an account name like that you'd better be good ;)

Sam
2:18 PM
@MisterITGuru i'm good, there are actually quite a few of us from the UK, just not here at the min

/me waves

@Chopper3 - I've been using this nick for like 10 years, I had an adolescent urge one day, and it's stuck since then! It does mean having this nick that I don't need to apologise for mistakes, so ... hehe!

Anyone know of some "cheap" 10GbE cards? I'm looking for something to screw around with, but $1k USD for a pair is putting a slight damper on that idea.

Hm. Maybe /me should be one of our memes.

i prefer rm -rf

2:20 PM
I see you can only edit posts within a small window, that's a good idea - This chat room is awesome

@ChrisS I've got it on my list to find something, I'll let you know if I do.

@packs or at least convert it into action

@MisterITGuru :) only kidding, where are you in London, I lived in Brook Green for about a decade but moved near Bournemouth about 6 years ago

@packs there is a userscript for that: github.com/rchern/StackExchangeScripts

i'm out bedford way

2:21 PM
@ChrisS I've got a fistful of IDS sensors that will need to be upgraded eventually, blah.

quite a few brits and other europeans around here in the day

@ChrisS overclock some 1Gb ones :) - seriously though how much are they? I only ever buy blades and never buy extra NICs so I'm really out of touch

@Zypher Cute.

@Chopper3 @RobertMoir I'm a central londoner born and raised, (30+ years) so I don't know that I'm being ripped off by the prices of ....... everything

@ChrisS looks like you can get intels for like 250$ newegg.com/Product/…

2:23 PM
@Chopper3 I've found refub 10GbE cards for $280 + S&H now... But they've got CX4 connectors.

I know I'm really late on this one, just been having my first experience with DRAC cards .... oohhh.. man ... I'm in love! :)

oh yea not ethernet
ahh well

Can't remember how much we paid for SFP+ 10GBe cards
but it wasn't very cheap, I DO remember that

@Zypher RJ45 ones are still $600, and the SPF+ cards need a GBIC that costs another $250+.

10GIG BASE-T FTW?

2:24 PM
@MisterITGuru haha yea ... i had alot of issues with 9th gen DRACs but the new one are teh sweet

Have to say though that the SFP+ ones are working well. As they bloody well ought to for the money, mind you, but still

@Zypher So sweeet! I watched a video of the server startup via the web interface over my phone in an FreeNX session, to my work desktop, while I was 300 miles away ... awesome

haha

@RobertMoir OEM or similar cards usually run $1k USD each right now. The higher end ones with virtual networking, iSOE, and all that jaz run double that.

keeps the switch side of things simple too - same ports for both local copper and fibre to other switch rooms, and just buy a few fibre gbics as needed.

2:26 PM
yea ... the problem i had with 9th gen ones ... was well after a while they liked to lock and prevent the box from booting

Damn, must go help stupid user - sent 200 pages to print, and our print server has like 8G of memory, so the job finished spooling!

ahh gotta venture out in 12"+ of snow for coffee if i'm not back in 20 mins ... wait longer

I think we got intel cards with all the salad, but we're paying educational prices luckily for us

@Zypher Good luck :)

:( chat timeout again - anyway, CX4 * shudders *

2:31 PM
/me is in the UK and would like to try a reuben

@ChrisS that's ridiculous pricing though - I buy HP BL460c G7 blades which come with dual 10Gb NICs on for £1.4k each (single e5640/6GB/2x146 10ks) - so that's a silly price

aaaargh.. this is suited as a SU question, but you are my gang and crew etc
when I scroll my mouse in outlook it jumps about 9 pages down
it works just fine in every other application
what the ..

have you tried using your other hand?

hardy harr
heres another funny thing: If I disable scrolling completely in the logitech app then scrolling doesnt work in any application exept outlook...

@pauska Have you tried turning it off and on again?

2:39 PM
everyone here work at Wiseguy Inc.?

Is this when you're scrolling in Norwegian or English?

Change your socks so the pointer doesn't stick so much?
You don't have light shining through a...what is that thing? window? or something like that that interferes with the optical sensor do you?

by 'outlook' do you mean 'thehun.com'?

@pauska not everyone works at WiseGuy Inc, I work @ Silly Questions Get Silly Answers Corp :)

@pauska Logitech <- I found your problem!

2:40 PM
@BartSilverstrim - I changed my socks, but my IT problems still remain. Shall I upgrade my shoes as well ? :)

What application?

This fixed my problem too!!! thanks!!!!

/me will be serious now!

@pauska Is it plugged in?

@pauska Check the settings in Control Panel -> Mouse, might override your Logitech App settings for MS products...

2:43 PM
you need to upgrade the internet. Have you seen a small black box anywhere?

@RobertMoir YOU LOST THE BLACK BOX?! I knew we never should have trusted you with the Internet.

I've found the solution, but by all means continue your blabbering!

its being degaussed by Steven Hawking himself.

.... I like this room - your all nuts, meaning I fit right in !

2:44 PM
we try harder

Yeah, I love coming in here for the first time every day or after an extended break. There's always at least three conversations crossing over each other and no way to tell what the heck is going on until you've watched for about five minutes.

Thanks guys. Now I need to watch the 'Fire' episode tonight.

@pauska Well at least share what the solution was. Please?

@ChrisS: Remove logitech software

@pauska and the solution is ... ?

2:45 PM
@pauska - I think we sysads generally have to take every opportunity to have a laugh, because, well, we deal with peoples bull shit all day long, you know! - But at times, we should be more professional, looks at a user - you know who you are! hehe - Hope you got your issue fixed btw

@MisterITGuru: I'm in the game aswell, dont sweat it :)

@pauska can we have a visio of the solution please?

@pauska I can tell from your mouse problems exactly how 'on' your game is :)

@pauska - It's all good :)

you know why we all turned on him don't you - he switched sides for a moment - became a user - so we acted as a pack

2:48 PM
that figures, I had the logitech keyboard software on my home PC and it screwed up surprisingly often
i think that might be it

@Chopper3 I see what you did there. Used a pun to indicate following behind me. Nicely done.

Wait...you installed the special proprietary gee-whizbang glitzy software that often ends up screwing up the hardware or interactions with other software? And you're a sysadmin?!
For shame...

Actually, I didnt
Win7 pulled it in as a recommended update
and it gave me shiny notifications about battery level etc

MS were also pushing their own intellimouse software. That's pretty bad too

You installed a recommended update from Microsoft?! For shame... :P

2:51 PM
it seems that those pieces of software are specifically designed to make the associated hardware less pleasant to use. Which is a pretty odd design goal when you think about it.

We're stuck with the logitech on some of our wireless meeting room PC setups. The keyboard doesn't work without them. They also do crap things with the middle button.
It's almost as aggravating as those keyboards that relegated the function keys in place of office-related specific things. (just give me 5 minutes alone with whoever came up with that...)

@RobertMoir intellimouse on mac is teh aces though

not tried it

Middle button should paste, period.

@SmallClanger I inherited a policy of letting Managers bring in their own keyboards and mice... I had two (now one) that used top of the line Logitech stuff and was strongly of the opinion that more expensive = works better; Logitech's 'high end' stuff if a pile of crap, their drivers are sketchy as hell, the software is bloated and impossible to make work, and the hardware doesn't works without the aforementioned two. Don't misconstrue this as an endorsement for MS's Inteli-crap either.

2:56 PM
we have a policy of "You'll use what we give you and you'll be happy to have it"

I don't know about you guys but I pretty much insist on old-school WIRED mice these days for everything, I just got sick of interference and duff batteries

I've been really happy with the Dell keyboard/mouse that came with my optiplex.

only thing I use wireless for is the media centre

@Chopper3 hear hear

Both are simple, and feel real nice.

2:57 PM
work is all wired

@ChrisS: I'm in a similar boat. I tnd to buy Logitech 250 keyboards (Basic about 6 quid) and MS basic optical mice, but I'll get in ergonomic stuff on demand if people want it.

life's too short for wireless keyboard and mouse nonsense

I've not yet seen a single piece of mouse/KB software that's worth a damn.

although at home I've got a logitech keyboard/mouse set for use with my laptop

of course it doesn't help that my office is full of broadband routers (as in probably 300-500 witin 100-200m and nobody remembers to switch off the wifi)

2:59 PM
@RobertMoir You can have my wireless mouse when you pry it from my cold dead fingers!

no its ok, you can keep it
really

we had over a 150 SSIDs in range at one point - about once a year I send out a "bloody stop it" email and within a day it drops to about 5
@ChrisS are you in nebraska or something?

This all seems strange to me, I have never had to install any drivers for Micrsoft or logitech mice/keyboards ...

@KyleBrandt MS tries to get you to (for enhanced features) but they're almost never required. Only the 'high end' logitech stuff pulls those games.

Some need drivers if you want to enjoy the bells and whistles. Logitech G15.

3:01 PM
Oh, just use Linux :-P

@Chopper3: I'm trying to figure out what you do from all these hardware hints you keep giving. I can only imagine that you're the guy who runs the transmitter planet thing in Serenity.

@KyleBrandt the Win 7 built in ones always work for me, I refuse point-blank to install guff that comes packaged with hardware, be it mice, printers, cameras or scanners.

@Chopper3 No, I just really like my mouse. It's got one of those tilt wheels too, so I can scroll up/down and left/right (which is important when your biggest screen is 19")

@SmallClanger I build broadband-transitted consumer VoD systems, so we have loads of routers about for test/dev rigs
@ChrisS I love tilt stuff too but I just get jittery stuff happening when I use wireless

@ChrisS My logitech G5 at home does the side scrolling just fine without fancy drivers
That is, of course, on linux, though.

3:04 PM
@packs: Ditto

actually I lie, my lounge macmini uses one of those bluetooth majic mice things

i have the logitech dinovo mini for my media centre at home. That actually works really well, especially as its paired with a mac mini and macs aren't on logitech's supported list

I've got a G9 myself. Good mouse, but I did feel a bit of a dork loading those dinky, little weights into it.

I'm a huge fan of Logitech, @ChrisS. MX5500. Their mice with their weighted wheel.. I can't imagine why you would hate it.

@packs This is an MS mouse, no fancy drivers required, nice shape too (which is something I think many people underestimate when selecting a mouse).

3:06 PM
i notice no-one here sticking up for the apple mouse designs....

@RobertMoir "one button" need I say more?

Aside from the fact that all Logitech products I've had thus far have been excellent, I love them for their product support. I've had two mice replaced by them with minimal hassle, and didn't even have to return the old equipment.

Logitech is king of input devices.. between their conference room remotes, universal remotes..

I just kind of did, the magic one in my lounge, but all of my other macs have MS mice though

I like Microsoft input devices too. In fact, I'm using them here now. But I usually buy Logitech first.

3:07 PM
now to be fair you can right-click just fine on an apple mouse these days. That's far from their biggest problem

In the first case, it was an issue of my own creation that I couldn't figure out how to resolve. Five minutes after having gotten off the phone to line up the replacement, I figured the dang thing out and ended with two working mice.

@ChrisS that's not been the case for years

@Chopper3 details details ;-)

apple mac mice...nice but expensive for what is just going to be used for pointing and clicking at stuff.

yeah, the magic one is just pretty, which for the lounge is nice, but it constantly runs out of battery power - luckily I have teenagers to do menial work like replacing them

3:18 PM
Which one is it that has multitouch (apple mice)?
Is that the magic mouse?
Did someone really criticize Macs for one mouse button? I suppose he likes Windows with that archaic DOS box to do anything! :-p

@BartSilverstrim Aye
The Magic Mouse is a multi-touch mouse manufactured and sold by Apple, and it was announced and sold for the first time on October 20, 2009. The Magic Mouse is the first consumer mouse to have multi-touch capabilities. Taking after the iPhone, iPod Touch, and multi-touch trackpads, the Magic Mouse allows the use of gestures such as swiping and scrolling across the top surface of the mouse to interact with desktop computers. The mouse requires at least Mac OS X 10.5.8 and Bluetooth. It can be configured as a two-buttoned left-handed or right-handed mouse, but the default is a single butt...

My boss has the magic mouse. I guess he really likes it.

it's ok, small, doesn't stand out, it's drive me nuts using it all day though

Batteries...the problem with any wireless doohicky. I'd rather have the cable with my mouse and keyboard if it means not having to put up with the periodic @!#%!! of having it act up when the battery goes low with something that is really kind of important to be able to use my system.
It's slick and nicely designed and the multitouch can be handy, no doubt. Just not enough to convince me overcoming my personal aversion to finding new batteries is worth it.

It's ergonomically horrible, though.

Can't tell if it's a mouse or a panty liner.
3

@BartSilverstrim Keep a charger near the mouse and use rechargeables. They run out faster, and that is pretty annoying, but at least you don't have to do the "fishing around" bit so much.

Dan
Thats my most favorite mouse ever. bluetooth, on/off switch to conserve power

I'm all about the Logitech G5. I think I've owned 3 or 4 of them now.

@SmallClanger multitouch makes interesting possibilities there, I suppose.

3:27 PM
@BartSilverstrim o.0

Heh. The next person who asks me for an ergo mouse, I'm buying them an omax personal massager and letting them figure it out.

@Dynamo That is a fine mouse, that one. I still use an MX518 at work, but it would likely be replaced with a G5 if it broke.

Any XEN users in here?

@Cakemox The first Logitech I'd had replaced was an MX700 - loved it.

@Iszi Indeed, I replaced my MX700 with the G5 and was way happier. Smoother and wired. Plus, thanks to the weight cart, I was able to make it almost the same heft as the 700.

3:32 PM
I'm running a V220 these days, but that's mainly for laptop portability. If I could get an MX700 or something like it for my work desktop, I would.

@Iszi I find the wheel on the g5 is a bit too sensitive, it tends to scroll up a notch when I try to click. Except for that, I wouldn't go back.

serverfault.com/questions/227655/… really makes me want to have a snarky closed option

@Iain Personally, I loved @Chopper3's answer. Short and to the point.

I like it too and I bet it gets him (another) nice answer badge

Dan
I just borrowed a magic mouse for my hackintosh, i was sold in 2 minutes

3:45 PM
my lounge macmini just sits there torrenting tv-show/films and playing them back with VLC - for this the magic mouse is fine - anything more than this would, I think, result in a mouse/wall interface

Dan
My hackintosh is only used for itunes/iphone management and music

actually that user has asked 8 homework-style questions in 48 hours - and not read comments left for him. Hmmm.... hey mod candidates - what would you do?

Dan
Not a candidate, but I would issue a warning to the user in a comment.

</whispers "give him the wrong answers...">

tell him the answers are all in the BOFH articles on the register

3:56 PM
Agree with everything he says. (If it is his homework, he'll probably come back to complain)

point out that you only get out of things what you put into them.

@Chopper3 Look through the webserver logs for his IP address, figure out which school he likely attends, plow through webpages looking for the networking profs, and see what their syllabus says is currently on topic.

Maybe find his IP address, log in to his home router (it'll have the default password), then set his MTU to 1...

time to head off home :-D

@RobertMoir Enjoy.

4:01 PM
Chris, it's not a 2-char-answer, there's a pretend tag in there saying something like; left-bracket obligatory padding characters right-bracket

I like @packs idea...

@SmallClanger hahaha

@BartSilverstrim I would mark that time down to 'Investigation'

given he's in Sri Lanka I doubt very much he's called Jake either

Sam
I'd usually leave a comment that it looked very much like homework, and we'd be happy to assist him with an areas where he is stuck and can show us what work he has done already, but we're not going to do his home work for him

4:09 PM
hopefully not come over as a dick in my comment

@Chopper3 With your accent? No, you just sound dry and sophisticated.

Sam
aargh, it's 4.15 and I have achieved no work today, I have spent all day trying to sort out NDA agreements! Remind me never to be a lawyer!

@packs Yes, I can see why that would appear the case ;)

4:16 PM
hey guys

Howdy.

hi

pfo
anyone in here who has used mcaffee enterprise for storage systems (with a netapp) ?

@pfo That's a pretty specific combination, probably not going to find it in here.

Huh, didn't know they'd gotten into storage.

4:22 PM
use netapps but not mcaffee/intel :) sorry

@sysadmin1138 I assume he means their malware protection for storage systems.

pfo
well it seems that it's just a plugin for their enterprise scanner that talks to a netapp

@ChrisS Aaaaah.

McAfee has got into AV systems for just about everything.

Including voting machines in the US, if I remember correctly.

pfo
4:23 PM
really?!

I saw their new AV appliance for ESX clusters. Impressive, offloads AV from the host/guest OSes, does require a bit of software for the ESX host, but the guest OSes don't strictly need the client to be protected (they need the client for the "threats" to be gracefully taken care of though).

@Chopper maybe u can help me out with a capacity puzzle i've been having with a new installation. One aggregate with 3RGs each with 15 1TB disks - total 45 disks - if I account for paraity and dparity disks I should have 39TB of total net capacity but the system shows 27TB.

WAFL f'ing you over I guess
mind you that's a lot - got more details?

pfo
aggr snap reserve is set to 0
it's the root aggr and it contains an 8.0.1 64bit root volume (210G as recommended)
nothing else on it
i basically always use 0.6 as the magic netapp factor to know what the real usable capacity on a aggr will be
and it does suit we kinda well since 39TB * 0.6 is 27TB
but somehow i'd like to really understand what's going on there

@pfo on a call - 10 mins

4:34 PM
Voting machine reference: networkworld.com/news/2008/… (Had to dig that up to convince myself I hadn't invented it.)

Remember back on Monday when I published this? (sysadmin1138.net/mt/blog/2011/01/…) Apparently it's gone viral. Only, it's the RSS bit that's going viral not the actual page. 35K views on that feed item, all of 400 for the page.

The whole e-voting machine thing really frustrates me. I'd have no problem designing a system that just plain works every time. But I don't have money to build it, and I don't have money to buy off politicians to get government contracts, don't have and buddies in the Good Ole Boys Club....

@ChrisS the issues are more in depth with e-voting than just making it work every time. I think Bruce Schneier (sp?) has a number of articles on that.

@ChrisS Remember a few years ago when the president of Diebold promised that he would deliver the Ohio presidential vote to the Republicans? Good times.

@BartSilverstrim I have a very broad definition of "just plain works". I've read most (all?) of Bruce's articles on the topic... follow his articles quite closely.

4:42 PM
So does Apple....

Isn't B.S. great? ...wait, that doesn't sound right.

@BartSilverstrim Yep, I always look forward to reading my e-mail in the morning on the 15th.

Nothing like having the president of the company making the voting machines also be a political party campaign chairman.

@packs see comment above about buying politician, to get government contracts, more money, buy more politicians, you get the idea...

@ChrisS Quite. I just prefer it when they show a little more tact.

4:46 PM
I prefer when karma catches up with them...

Hey, enjoy your salt-petered beef everybody.
