12:10 AM
That's a first. Someone contacted our Helpdesk looking for "one of your sysadmins, serverfault blog title of sysadmin1138", about a script fragment I posted a while back.
Good thing half our helpdesk reads my blog :P

What, they didn't track down your real name?
Talk about lazy.

I know! It's not hard to find. Also, I have this blog. Usually people looking for me leave comments on random blog entries.

12:37 AM
Time to head home.

Anyone know when the new Intel Sandy Bridge processors should be hitting the Xeon market for 2 and 4 socket systems?
Wikipedia has Q3 2011, but we all know how reliable Wikipedia can be
Plus I can't wait that long, I'm really hoping it's like... tomorrow

Does the backup operator privilege only of robocopy only work when you are logged in directly on the box you are trying to copy from?

God I hate quoting
I'm always so petrified I'll screw something up
And end up losing money on a $30,000/month system

3:42 AM
@Farseeker I know how it goes. You tend to over quote because being overbudget is taboo, but then if you're always too high and come in way underbudget all the time, people know your game.
I find that quoting prices is a great way to gauge my knowledge in something. Even if I think I know a lot about a topic, if I have trouble making accurate quotes (within reason), then it shows me that I'm not as knowledgeable in that topic as I think I am. At least, that's my theory.

4:13 AM
@WesleyDavid - I totally agree
When I've read the quote document 14 times and I'm not 100% sure I've covered everything maybe I dont know enough

FYI, anonymous / low rep user edit suggestions are now enabled ; if you see edit (1) on a question it is a suggested edit. Diamond mods can view queued pending edits via a topbar count notification which leads to a tab on /review .

I hate finding questions, where almost every answer is wrong in some way...

Q: Does NAT provide security?

NethI'm following discussions about the IPv4->IPv6 transition, and IPv6 doesn't seem to like NAT at all. I've always thought that NAT was helpful in v4 for some security, I know it doesn't really hide the computers but it makes them harder to get to, certainly it makes it easy to limit access to por...

Q: 4GB of RAM on Windows 7 32-bit

aximiliI installed 4GB of RAM on my Windows 7 Ultimate 32-bit (it used to have only 2GB). But it says only 3GB usable, and I still often get a "Not enough memory" problem on Photoshop. Is there any way to make it utilise the full 4GB?

You would hope the ability to get a list of pending edits will be added to the 10k tools at some point too,

or even somewhere between 3k & 10K

Sam
true

Yeah, why is it only super-rep for that function?
I cant edit posts at my own will, but not commit suggested edits? weird

@pauska yep - even better

12:15 PM
erik - mods can't force answers to be accepted by the way
oh and those new xeons went pop within 10 mins * sigh *

Sam
@Chopper3 that sucks

it's funny, we get pre-release kit all the time and some of it is rock solid from day one but other times there'll be a line that's just awfully unreliable right up to weeks before launch - wish I understood (I'm I come from a chip-design background)

pfo
hey Chop - any insight into netapp usable capacity calculations?
i just can't figure it with my back of envelope math ...

oh sorry, forgot, I did read your stuff and I'm in the same boat really, work on assumptions and past experience but we too say that we get around 0.625 to 0.7 depending on model and disk load out (of course it's awful on 2020's) but no I don't have the exact maths involved - that said we have netapp people around all the time - I'll ask if they have a calculator or something and let you have it if they do ok

Sam
@Chopper3 You would think that chips would want to be relatively stable when getting close to launch, but then I know very little about ship design and how easy it is to make changes

pfo
12:29 PM
@Chopper3 thanks!
hmm i think i'll ask SF

me neither, my quallies in that area were from the 80's and things are SO different these days - guess it's all about how far they're pushing the fabrication processes - Intel in particular are known for super stable very early dev desktop chips but that their mobile chips struggle with TDP issues right up to the wire - for xeons's it seems to be family related - the 55's were like this but the 56's were great

Sam
I'd love to be able to understand chip architecture, but I don't think there's enough time, or room in my head for that.

the basics are easy but there's some damn clever people been working in that area for decades since I truly understood what's going on and although I keep up it's sufficiently complex to lose me quite easily when put in front of these guys (I do PR work for Intel so have to do this every so often)

12:57 PM
hm.. I've been assign to fix our meeting rooms to a better standard.. what kind of speakers should I get for this? I'm thinking like.. logitech-something with wall mounts could suffice, but then again.. BOSE or similar would give great audio "punch"

Just read @RobertMoir 's quote referencing @Pauska's quote in the quote list. I really think this should be the mascot for ServerFault's chat.

marshall stacks
BOSE kit gives me a headache - too 'bright' and 'impressive' - that said I'm going deaf in my old age due to too many gigs as a kid
seriously though, if you need speakers why not do it as a kind of 'themed' stage thing like a small club/venue - it's be fun/exciting and your seniors would be pleased to be up there acting like rock stars - not too expensive either

@Chopper3 Also: fog machines.

Sam
lasers!!!

strobes and frickin' LASERS!!!
great minds

1:03 PM
LAZERS!

Sam
There's no Z in lasers, it's an acronym!

and a BIG fishtank along the wall. For Sharks. With LAZAH'S!
Well, duh. But that's more fun than "laser."

you could buy xbox rock band and plug it in too so people could have fun with it too

Sam
Well true, adding Z's do make things cooler, but lasers are pretty cool allready!

Next thing you know he's going to totally dampin' my fun with scoobah divin'.

1:05 PM
and cheap too sam

Sam
very true, I also have a friend who works in a lab that grows lasers, wonder if he can "borrow" some

HOLY @#$% YOU CAN GROW THEM??

Laser. Shark. Moat. That'll always be the dream

Dude...I need those seeds.

Sam
Well you grow the crystals, in a careful control, arsenic rich environment
so if you've got room in your shed for that, go for it!

1:09 PM
Standalone Sysadmin
Timing is Key

its all well and good to have the lasers but without the shark and pool/moat its all for nothing sigh

hey, i'm migrating mediatemple dv to google apps, can anyone tell me the imap prefix path setting i need to enter?

Q: Hostnames - What are they all about?

Alix AxelI've recently been "forced" to perform some sysadmin work, while this isn't something that I absolutely love doing I've been reading, experimenting and learning a lot. There is one fundamental aspect of server configuration that I've not been able to grasp - hostnames. In Ubuntu for instance, o...

=( I feel bad for people in this position; whoever did that to him obviously, drastically underestimates the prerequisite level of knowledge required of a system admin.

Sam
well the moat can be achieved relatively easily with a spade and some effort, the sharks are a bit more difficult. You could start with Pike, or Koi or something

Maybe he's researching for a new Insane Clown Posse song
in which hostnames are revealed to be even more miraculous than magnets.

1:19 PM
I bought an ICP t-shirt in hawaii last year, my son looked mortified when I was buying it :)

@Sam Koi can get pretty big if you feed them plenty and they have room to grow.

And yeah, its a shame to see people get stitched up like that. Only in IT do people hire programmers to sysadmin and sysadmins to code
showing up the younger generation is one of the rights and privileges of being older!

Sam
@ChrisS add a bit of radiation into the mix and you could have mutant koi with lasers, nearly as good as Sharks!

Mutant laser koi! I love it when a plan comes together

Sam
and cheaper!

1:21 PM
That reminds me, I was talking to an old friend last night, about an interview I had at a local school system a number of years ago. I did the phone interview where they asked about networking equipment and WANs, Windows Networking, etc. Got to the in-person and they asked all about Novell and Macintosh, which I know relatively little about.
@Sam Excellent idea. I'm patenting it right now. ;-)

@Chopper3 Um yeah.. no. :) boss turned down my shopping spree anyway, going to put some $30 desktop speakers at the back :|

we have a set list of questions we ask candidates... all the same ones as part of our equality mandate... So I ask everyone questions about windows, Unix, Mac OS. I don't mind if the Unix expert doesn't know Windows (though as a mixed shop which is predominantly Windows they won't be doing themselves any favours) but if the self proclaimed Mac expert can't explain Netboot to me then they better have a good reason for that

Sam
@ChrisS I'll look forwarding to seeing "A method for deploying genetically altered Koi Karp with laser based offensive devices in a spherical aquatic environment " at the patent office

@pauska ah, bum, sorry

Hmm...if they can grow lasers, can we somehow genetically alter koi fish to have integrated lasers for tongues?

Sam
1:31 PM
oooh, now there's an idea. Although we would probabley have to alter the koi to survive the arsenic based environment need to grow the lasers

toxin-*resistant* laser koi - can we staple tiny top hats to their heads too? maybe a monocle

Koi...aren't they supposed to be Japanese? Monocles are a British thing. That would be just weird.

@Chopper3 Why do they have to be butlers? They're koi, shouldn't they be pirates?

Oh geez...I did a google of the string to see if anything mentions it. Guess what actually came up as the only hit. serverfault.com/questions/228109/what-exploit-is-this

sigh - why do people assume that there are 'basics' to complicated topics like DNS?

1:42 PM
they'd not butlers, they're EVIL toxin-resistant laser-equipped supervillians - the monocle (an egyptian invention iirc) would simply be an affectation

Sam
it could also be used to focus the laser beam if required

I figured a monocle would just be a teenage invention that came around shortly after glasses, judging from how well they take care of their cellphones.
@Sam-genetically engineer crystal based teeth, if the laser is their tongue.

pfo
@ChrisS yeah - just pitty those fools

@BartSilverstrim what freaks me out is then I look on google for an answer to a problem and not only get immediately linked to SF but when you look and find that your own answer was accepted - now that's spooky and possibly prescient of a failing mind

of course when SF is the top hit then the plan is working... as long as the answer is right

1:45 PM
@BartSilverstrim It's definitely an encoded string of some sort. I'll try to run it through some of my decoders and see what falls out.

pfo
@Chopper3 happend to me a few times and I was like: strange - this guy has exactly the same problem as I before realizing that was one of my questions :P

Anybody know if the Yearling badge starts counting when you cross 200 rep? I suspect that's the case.

@BartSilverstrim Nah, very old thing, older than glasses - oh and did I tell you I had MS in the other day for a meeting and they all had Mobile Windows 7 phones they were showing off - I told them I was genuinely impressed by how good it is, they were happy, then I told them they were two years too late, suddenly less happy
@ChrisS K/G will be awake in an hour or so, they'll know

@Chopper3: HAHAHAHAHA!
@packs...did you just beam in from a Star Trek episode?

it was very good though, I preferred the interface to android by a mile

1:47 PM
Or NCIS?

@Chopper3 Ha! That's exactly what I thought of the new Win Mobile 7 Phones.. Nice, but iPhone has been doing this for years already.

@ChrisS It might be one of those badges that only gets run every few days or something
@BartSilverstrim Something like that. Only with more nerds and no women.
And no sunglasses to take on and off either.

@ChrisS for a user who wants to customise their UI I think it's actually a better interface than the iphone - and I frickin love iphones, they're just on rails for joe-public which is fine - but I was really impressed with WP7, not one line of original WM6 code you know, wish they took that approach with any single other product they have :(

WM7 looks like a good product but like you say - too late.

1:52 PM
@packs Well my first rep was from 2009.11.18, my profile says I've been around for 12 months, but didn't cross 200 rep until 2010.02.13. Could be what you said too... I'm not that worried about it, just curious.

@ChrisS Ah, so really it's been about 10 days. I'm not sure. I know the jobs that calculate some badges run pretty infrequently, but 10+ days seems a bit much.

@RobertMoir IMHO, At this point there's Android and iOS who "get it"; and WM7, BB, WebOS, etc who don't "get it" or are figuring it out way too late.

@RobertMoir I do get frustrated with iphone's lack of customisation though, I know you can hack them to do stuff but I'd love to be able to press the button and see the first line of new texts, emails, missed call numbers, rss stuff, calender stuff - all in one view, WM5/6 could do that

@packs Where do you get 10 days from? Heck, I don't know where my profile gets 12 months from.. =)

@ChrisS From not reading your dates well enough, clearly :) And of course I can't go back and edit now either.

1:56 PM
@Chopper3 Good point, but iPhones haven't really been marketed toward business professionals as much as the average joe.

@ChrisS I think WP7 is actually a "got it, shit too later" product though - two years ago maybe

Just to be clear for the audience, 2011.01.28 - 2010.11.18 does, in fact, not equal 10 days.

@packs It's ok. I'm going on vacation starting this weekend and I'm pretty much already checked out too.

The philosophy is one of preference, I think, for apple products...

@ChrisS yeah, there's a lot of profit in a product or service that is "pretty good" for >80% people - but for me I want the ease of use/update/media&app-buying etc but would also like to change a few things, not fonts or icons but just the 'first pickup' display

1:58 PM
having a consistent interface means that when you have to troubleshoot, help someone, etc. you know what they're looking at and how to navigate it.

totally get that

@ChrisS I just checked when mine came in, and it was calendar year + 1 day from my first activity.

Linuxheads that customize things (or users that "accidentally" adjust things..."Where'd your start button go?!") can drive you nuts when trying to fix things.

@Chopper3 I've got a WM6 phone now, and love that it reminds me of that stuff when I hit the home page. I'm waiting for the HTC Evo Shift to come down in price a bit though, then jumping boat on MS Phone.

If you can work an iPod/iPhone, you can probably work someone else's with minimal hassle. If someone can customize it up the wazoo, you have to take ten minutes finding a simple function because they moved it or thought they knew better how to do it.

2:00 PM
I've got a dev guy who's just a total linux nut (contributes to the kernel iirc) and when I got him a new workstation he said it'd genuinely take him 3 days to rebuild it how he wants - wow

pfo
hmm it takes me maybe 10 minutes to swap linux distros
NFS mounted home dir and emacs as login shell ftw! :P

@ChrisS It's EXACTLY that stuff that I miss, there's a iphone hack to do it but then you're into unsupported, potentially-unstable territory that deals badly with minor updates etc - we're not talking complex code here

I like the iphone. I used to be one of the WM hackers at XDA developers but these days I kinda like the idea of a phone that "just works".

@pfo this guy has three 28 inch monitors and runs multiple KVM VMs on his work machine ffs - I don't care really, he does a good job but when I lose him for half a week just because he's got a new box it does grate

pfo
sure

2:03 PM
I guess these days I have 2 categories for tech: "Things I am prepared to Hack about" & "Things I'd just like to work properly with no messing tyvm"

@RobertMoir same here, I get paid to fiddle with things but some 'tools' are just that, tools and should just work
great minds etc.

pfo
same thing here - it's actually the reason why i have a mac as my mobile computer.
it UNIXy enough so that I can use it and stuff like iphone sync and calendars are just working.

Yep.. one reason I have macs at home... I don't want to feel like I'm at work when all I'm trying to do is watch a damn movie on the TV in my front room

me too - I don't have to maintain my hammer, drill, screwdriver - most of the time I just want another non-maintenance tool that just happens to browse/email/office etc.

Totally switched personal stuff to Mac.
Home: Mac.

pfo
2:05 PM
but on my main (dev) machine it's only linux with 2x24s and 2x19 inch screens, xmonad window manager, emacs all the way etc.

Wife: uses a Mac.

@RobertMoir: I have a similar outlook, although I lean towards: "Why can't everything just work? Then I can go home and get some sleep."
2

My mother was getting a new computer and I said "If you don't get a Mac, I'm not helping you with your computer stuff anymore." She got an older MacBook.
Workstation at work: Linux.
:-)

same for me bart, I spend less than an hour a month maintaining 9 different macs, can't say that would be the case for either W7 or ubuntu

pfo
exactly

2:06 PM
on an entirely unrelated note, Windows Server Core is great for messing with the minds of colleagues who treat servers like overgrown desktops
3

for work I use either my MBP or a client-supplied lenovo W7 box that they look after completely - it's totally 'locked' - just outlook, office, ie8 - nothing else - not my problem, quite nice really
@RobertMoir the flip-side of that is that I used W2K8 with the desktop experience stuff for ages before W7 came out - loved it

Oh it makes a good windows desktop
but we've been using it for jobs like DNS, Domain Controller, etc. where you don't need the GUI... especially on VMs where its nice to save those guest resources. And every now and again you can hear cursing when certain colleagues log onto a windows server core machine to have a little "play" and gets confused

The reason Apple stuff works is because they discourage you from @$#%ing with their stuff...a lot of people don't seem to quite get that concept.

only briefly caught the PSP2 launch details - does it look any good? not convinced by even the concept myself, although happy to be told differently

pfo
does anyone understand why Core doesn't include powershell?

2:10 PM
@RobertMoir I LOVE Core for that reason, use it whenever I can. My previous boss and her predecessor were some of the worst offenders.

It looks like it'll cost more than the PS3.

@RobertMoir does it save THAT much resource?

pfo
seems moronic to me to leave that out

@SmallClanger for an f'ing handheld! sod that

We still have a server around here with MS Office, Google Earth, Shockwave, etc, on it because I'm too afraid to touch it, it might stop working.. It's on my list of servers to decommission after the busy season.

2:11 PM
@chopper3 - I haven't done scientific tests but its running happily in 2/3s to 1/2 of the RAM of a "full fat" predecessor

pfo
@Chopper3 once instances doesn't but a few dozen of those do save things everywhere - RAM, IOPS, etc.

Sony will blather on about how it improves lifestyles and that we should be grateful to hand over two weeks' wages for the privilege of merely touching one (probably)

a mate of mine works at a multi-platform games dev place, apparently the Kinect dev kit had a thing where if someone knelt in front of you your avatar would put it's hand behind it's head and lean back a bit :)

pfo
heh

@pfo - Windows 2008r2 includes powershell. Just logged on to test it and its there

pfo
2:13 PM
but Core doesn't ...

@RobertMoir wow - worth it for 'utility' VMs like DNS, AD, DHCP etc then yeah - must play

@Chopper3 any proof of that on youtube? :-)

pfo
@Chopper3 exactly

@RobertMoir I've switched PS to my default shell on a number of Core servers. PS is so much nicer than CMD when it's all you've got (excluding remote management).

nah, but it's the kind of think coders put in :) he's in japan today actually, gets to go to all the shows etc.

2:14 PM
Is WSC entirely gui-less?
Much as I love the concept, I'd probably be pawing at the screen in mute incomprehension after 5 minutes.

sorry pfo I mean windows 2008 R2 core will support powershell. Its on our boxen, working

no, it's not 80x25 or anything, GDI starts up but the UI is essentially not there, just a window iirc

Kind of like safe mode?

less actually - robert have you got a screenshot?

Is there really a "Safe mode" to Windows?

2:16 PM
I can arrange one. How does one post screenshots in here?

pfo
you get your blueish desktop background and it automatically starts cmd.exe on login

Ok: "Stands a mildly better chance of booting Mode", then :)

that's at least vaguely representative, like I say GDI is running but not fully

You can launch GUI apps from the cmd.exe instance in Server Core.

pfo
2:17 PM
the 2008 version had no support for .NET and powershell which is beyond my comprehension ...

the command prompt should say "Hmm...you'd better know what the hell you're doing...C:>"

I don't mind admitting, it takes a lot of getting used to

@jscott yeah but only then does it start the upper windowing layers

It's like taking the stabilisers off your bike.

@Chopper3 GDI is there, but DX is not (which the newer interfaces rely heavily on).

2:18 PM
and there's no minesweeper

pfo
WMF isn't in there

it encourages scripting though, when we're configuring multiple boxes we get it right on one and script that onto the others. Scripting reduces the chance of human errors I think

@Chopper3: Noooooo!

that's right chris, better put than mine

pfo
s/WMF/WPF/ that is ...

2:19 PM
Indeed, but, you're not truly GUI-less.

you can be. We've certainly never run any gui utilities on ours

They need to get the .net framework on Core... It's got partial support, but not enough to run SQL Server yet.

Ok, I'll admit, I tried to right-click on that screenshot's title bar to set the font/size/quick-edit...

yes getting the .net framework onto it would help
but I do think its great for those simple basic roles
If you're installing, say 4 DCs, you can install one with the full version of windows and 3 core and use the gui tools to manage the others once the basic config and role install is done

@RobertMoir Absolutely. I certainly hope more and more "server" apps support running on Core, without any GUI, using remote management. Keeps things nice and clean.

2:22 PM
or install those gui admin tools on your workstation

Yep. Gotta love that.

Dan
Anyone use an RBL for Exchange?

@Dan: A couple.

Dan
Which do you prefer?

Had to trim down a bit recently due to false positives/overzealous listing.

2:23 PM
@RobertMoir that's exactly as it's supposed to be used - of course it'd make most sense in the HPC version I guess

Dan
I was using the built in Exchange anti-spam, and the results were bad, false positives were off the chart

Th IMF thing, or forefront?

yeah i guess so. But I also like it for VMs for much the same reason

oh mac peeps, take a look at this; secretgeometry.com/apps/cathode

Dan
The imf, it was horrible,

2:25 PM
we also use it for external DNS, mostly because my boss won't let me just put up bind on a BSD like I'd prefer
that terminal screen brings back bad memories

@Chopper3: hee hee...

@Dan: I don't trust that either. I've set my SCL to 8 for quarantining and no deletion.

@Chopper3 Want that for my iPhone.

it's amazing
have you seen it run yet - such detail

As for RBLs, I use Spamhaus XBL+SBL (but not the big one)

Dan
2:26 PM
My SCL was set to 8, and countless legit email was being picked up

.. and A few SORBS ones.
IMF was what brought me to SF (see my first question)

pfo
the full screen mode of cathode really made my day!

I know, I know, dizzyingly cool isn't it
do a ps -x

Dan
@SmallClanger, so adding what, zen.spamhaus.org as an IP BL provider is really about all there is to it?

pfo
i'm just watching shit scroll by on my brand new CRT vt100 terminal!

2:30 PM
@Dan zen is the only DNSBL I use, works great. Also use Spamhaus's DROP list on the firewall.

if you use RBLs then you have to accept a small amount of false alarms
these days we outsource all our email gateway stuff to mimecast, but I spent some time trying to find the right blend when we did it in-house
now we have users complaining something awful to our helldesk if they get one spam a week. Whether thats a glowing testament to how good mimecast normally is, or an example of how naive users are and I should turn off the filtering for one week to show them what its really like.

I use: sbl-xbl.spamhaus.org. The PBL was blocking a few legit, small hosts when I last looked at this.
(zen = sbl+xbl+pbl, I think)

@SmallClanger I know I block a few, but they're all 'rigged' servers run by people who know they're taking the risk and should know better.

@RobertMoir: I show my users the quarantine mailbox to remind them how bad it could be. There's never a perfect spot, and I always err on the side of preventing false positives.

I agree. From where I'm sitting I'm very happy with what we have, but no system is foolproof and people need to accept that.

2:35 PM
Once it;s down to 2-3 a day, people aren't angry at the time lost, they're just angry to have to be reminded that spam exists at all..

Dan
I'll give it a shot, the IMF was killing me, there was no happy medium with it.

Watch out for Outlook's built-in filter, too. A lot of FPs come from that, rather than the IMF scoring.

Good morning everyone

Dan
I had all "spam" going to a quarantine mailbox, and while it was catching nearly ALL spam, it was getting a ton of legit stuff as well, more than I think it should have.

2:38 PM
I've only got 4 layers to my setup. DROP list at the firewall, Zen, SPF; if it makes it through those it's delivered; but, goes through SA and if it's flagged there it'll get dumped in Inbox/Spam. I get about 1 per week currently (others are slightly more or less), and very few false positives (all people who have shitty server configurations one way or another).

@Chopper3 no, good answer

ouch

Yeah, it's my main problem with IMF, too. It's too much of a blackbox. There must be a ton of spamassassin-type rules in there, but you've never any idea which one called it out. I think it puts too much weight on RFC misdemeanours, which is probabaly why the FP rate varies so much from site to site.

@Chopper3 Good answer, if he's not going to utilize at least one full server, there's no point in hosting in house (unless there's some other specific requirement)

I can't remember, do we allow purchasing questions?

Q: Iomega StorCenter opinions

MejmoHi, I saw iomega storcenter with 12 HDDs with very favorable price. Experts, what do you think about that :) Vmware certified! :) This is not a question, but I would be glad if you provide some pros/cons. Thanks!

i think we got blacklisted by a RBL that was only concerned with implementing the RBL properly and being a good "net citizen"
The funny bit was when the person running it turned out to work for yahoo mail.
No I'm not kidding...

@Chopper: depends on how you define harsh. You're like a 2 or 1.5 on the TomTom scale.
...hmm...we totally need a defined TomTom scale of answer harshness.

his comment on that question is really good actually
I wonder who'd win in a mod election between tomtom, an amish grandmother and Bin Laden?

Dan
So, i added sbl-xbl.spamhaus.org as an IP BL provider, started both the IP Block list and provider list features in EMC, but when i send an email to the test account, it comes back and says "Uh-oh, your SBL block is not working!"

Depends. Is the grandmother senile and outspoken?

I'll take the Amish GMa thank you.

I think the PE2800 we threw away today could run that website requirement without breaking a sweat
AND it could heat the building too...

If your hardware's sweating you probably have a humidity problem.

its been a bit funny since that aircon problem earlier

I've had more problems with people not understanding SPF than the DNSBLs. They setup a record then test it against their server which is set for a soft test (or similar) and think it working. My servers are set to hard test anything, so they'll bounce you if your SPF record isn't correct.

I am sad that my freehand circles didn't win me the full bounty! :-(

A: OpenFire: Hide all users in the same group from each other?

JoshYou can do this using the Packet Filter Plugin, which is available by default in the Plugins section of the OpenFire admin. Using this plugin you can block messages between users of the Staff group from chatting with or seeing each other. I'd post a screen shot and detailed instructions, but it ...

But at least I got +4 and a Revival badge, yey

nice, or do I mean niche? ;)

LOL

@Josh Nicely put together answer, though.

Thanks :-)
Part of the problem was I was late to answer, the Openfire site was down when I first tried to answer!
But the OP did log in before the bounty expired, so he got a reminder that his bounty was expiring and decided not to award it to me, even though my answer was correct. Oh well :-)
oh, wow

... Now if it had been a twix..

> You've earned the "Necromancer" badge for OpenFire: Hide all users in the same group from each other?. See your profile.
Thanks guys!

maybe the OP figured that they'd get the bounty back if they didn't award it

I was determined to find an answer to this, but, I am starting to feel it's really impossible:

Q: Change location of error_log for userdir + suphp

Kristopher IvesI have needed to duplicate a FastCGI + suPHP, and I have re-created the setup but unlike the CentOS one my error_log files are all in /log/apache/ instead of the directories where the script triggered the error. How do I configure PHP to write all error_logs to ~/error_log?

@RobertMoir yeah maybe
it seems like even piping the logs to an external program won't work...

I just realized I have 8 active DHCP leases ... how did I get to this point, one is static too. So not including the network equipment I have 9 devices in my apartment :-P

Hello

@KyleBrandt I'm planning on moving the whole house to ipv6 this weekend
hello jacob

Really, IPv6 tunnel?

nah, fancy the challenge of 100% v6 up to my ISP which'll have to be v4

@Chopper3 IPv6: Because not only does my toaster need an address, so does each slice of toast. :-)

4:11 PM
so printers and everything

@Chopper3: I'm pretty ignorant when it comes to that

@Jacob: I suspect it's because Chopper has run out of address space at home :P

Oh ya the printer, so make that 10 active IPs not including network equipment

just a bit of homework really I guess (so expect me to post lots of questions on SF :) )

If only ISPs would run v6....
Then all my toast could get an IP address.

4:16 PM
@Chopper3 I've been running IPv6 (dual stack) for a while now at my house courtesy of 6to4 translation.

@Jacob We need a process for reclaiming addresses from eaten toast! This wasteful allocation scheme will result in an IPv6 shortage in 10000 years!

@Chopper3: Moved to Super User ;-)

I'd like to go IPv6 only, but the ProCurve I have doesn't support it and I haven't had enough time to mess with DNS64 and NAT64 to feel comfortable doing it.

Anybody use HEs 6to4?

cool

4:17 PM
@Jacob What's a "HEs"?

I might give Fios a call to see if I can get dual stack. As they were supposed to trial it.

I expect my v6 transition will be like most companies: v4 on the inside, v6 at the edge
@ChrisS Hurricane Electric

Hurricane Electric

I've not used their v6 environment, but supposedly it's one of the most mature out there

Oh, never heard of them. I'm on the Comcastic network. They do support 6to4 surprisingly.

Can anyone help me understand generally what the difference/relationship is between PCI-DSS, PA-DSS and PCI Compliance? We're certified PCI compliant but I'm being asked by a vendor if we're PA-DSS compliant, and I want to make sure I understand before I say yes.
That's probably a majorly loaded question... :-)

@chrisS comcast(crap) supports V6?

if only we knew someone who's always banging on about that subject :)
he's not been on for 17 hours so expect him soon

@Josh The standards talk about their own relationships (PA-DSS deals with the payment application, PCI-DSS deals with the environment that application is plugged in to)

@voretaq7 thanks; that's very helpful!

4:22 PM
@Jacob Their DOCSIS network doesn't support IPv6, but they have 6to4 relays with the Anycast IP setup correctly. So their customers can use 6to4 and they will provide all the info you need to get it running (you're still responsible for knowing what to do with the info, how to get it into your router...)

see if page 9 pf the PCI-DSS 2.0 requirements & assessment procedures doc makes sense (I don't have the pages memorized, I just happen to have it on my desk because we're doing our annual review-of-paperwork :-P)

@chriss Thats pretty nice, Verizon says they support native dual stack to the ONT.
Think I may Give 'em a call

@Jacob Is that FIOS?

@Jacob The key is that you have to use the ethernet port on the ONT -- If you have a full MOCA setup I don't think their little cablemodem/router thingies are v6 capable

@voretaq7 awesome, thanks... part of what confuses me is there's so many documents :-)

4:25 PM
@Josh :) I'm lucky in that it's only the PCI-DSS that really applies to us (we use it as a guide to ensure that we're in the ballpark on HIPAA compliance)

@voretaq7 I've got a brand new Surfboard and it support IPv6, but it's the first cable modem I've seen that does. I know the ones that you can rent/lease from Comcast do not support it.

@ChrisS SB 6xxx series (DOCSIS 3.0)? Those are sweet modems

@Jacob See also comcast6.net

@voretaq7 We're a SaaS provider, our product is an eCommerce system, so it would appear both apply to us

@Josh yup - if you're doing your own card processing both apply

4:27 PM
@voretaq7 We use payment gateways like Authorize.Net, QuickBooks, PayPal, etc. But the card numbers do get typed into our app, which passes them via SOAP or whatever

our card processing is wholly outsourced -- we never even see a card number (thank the devil)

fond the specific document @voretaq7, thank you again!

also most of our customers are freakin' luddites who mail actual paper checks to us with real handwritten (not stamped) signatures -- Damn the devils!

Seems the advantage of having a wholly Windows7/Server2008/Linux/MacOS network, is that everything appears to support IPv6
Neat.

At the moment I have a lone XP box, and my gateway router doesn't even know how to spell ipv6.

4:39 PM
I know I sounds like a broken record, but I can't say it enough times. I've got Alix SBCs for wireless routers and it's so nice running a real OS that I can configure and customize to my heart's content.

@chriss yeah I have FIOS

Nic
In Canada, the only ISP currently offering IPv6 connectivity is a dial-up provider.

Ah, @voretaq7, it looks like we don't have to worry about PA-DSS as our application is entirely SaaS, and according to this document PA-DSS does NOT apply to payment applications offered only as a service

I've got a bog-standard cisco 800 thing, does alright

4:41 PM
@Nic that's ironic in a way

@ChrisS Is that these guys? mini-box.com/ALIX

Yep. Here's the manufacturer's page for the exact model I use: pcengines.ch/alix3d1.htm
You can find them on eBay cheap now and then. That's how I picked mine up.

@Josh hmm... interesting. I wonder if that's talking about from the user/client's perspective or the provider's perspective? (seems like a gaping hole if providers don't have to be PA-DSS compliant, but I'd have to actually read the sheet to speak with real authority :)

Chris I've not heard this record before - so you stick in a bit of CF, it's got a NIC already, is the .11x onboard or is there a custom card for that? what about case? what OS do you use?

I've got them all over now, parents, parents-in-law, sisters... Just made a single image for a CF, so it takes minutes to get another one up and running. I've gone the extra step of doing unified address space, vpn, ddns, the whole enchilada. Pop an Engenius EMP-8602 radio in there and you'd have the same setup as me (if you're using FreeBSD anyway).
@Chopper3 Standard CF slot, CF is a modified ATA interface anyway, so it gets picked up as a HD. Two mini-pci slots for radios. My current image runs FreeBSD 8.1, but you can run just about any Linux, or you if hate yourself they even run Windows.

4:49 PM
interesting

@voretaq7 yeah, I'm not sure, LOL

@ChrisS sounds pretty sweet.

Cases are available, depends on what you're using it for. Small plastic ones; I've got aluminum "indoor" cases; they also make full weatherproof outdoor cases with up to 4 antenna connection and 2 weathertight GbE connections.

@voretaq7: Quote: PA-DSS does NOT apply to payment applications offered by application or service providers only as a service (unless such applications
are also sold, licensed, or distributed to third parties) because:
1) The application is a service offered to customers (typically merchants) and the customers do not have the ability to manage, install,
or control the application or its environment;
2) The application is covered by the application or service provider’s own PCI DSS review (this coverage should be confirmed by the
> 1) The application is a service offered to customers (typically merchants) and the customers do not have the ability to manage, install, or control the application or its environment;

@chriss yeah, I do have fios

4:51 PM
That is exactly what we do

The Alix boards are the newer generation of the WRAP boards (still go by that name in some circles). They're similar to the Soekris boards, but with more focus on being DIY-SOHO equipment.

But, I find this all very confusing, LOL

@Josh Hmm, I guess that makes sense actually -- you had to prove PCI-DSS compliance, so your application is compliant by virtue of that

I would ask a SF question proper about PA-DSS, but I think it's off topic (right guys?)
@voretaq7 yah, and we are PCI Compliant, so

@Josh But it would be quite topical on security.se if you want to head over there.

4:52 PM
Actually maybe this is a good question for Programmers.SE

@Josh It's definitely on topic for the security site

@sysadmin1138 I knew of no such SE site! AWESOME
Thanks

I know nothing of this kind of thing chris, very interesting
what's the difference between programmers.se and SO?

@sysadmin1138 Did you use Zen to push GPO at all?

@Chopper3 Well it is kind of the exact opposite of your Apple gear. Definitely not for people who just want to plug it in and work. But I love hacking stuff together, and this makes it too easy to create a crazy robust solution for my SOHO needs. =)

4:58 PM
@SpacemanSpiff Hah! Our Zen never got to the level of pushing out GPO. At the time there was insufficient upper-management support for doing stuff like that.

no but fun

Ah... same here. I'm working with a client who is using it, and its not working the way it's supposed to.
At least, their policy is supposed to be setting the machine setting to disabled windows updates, but I don't think it's taking.
