Sorry for the lateness of reply. Timezones and all that. I have an example of this type of situation from my Adminship of PokeTown (a facebook Pokemon group).

A user of our group had asked a hypothetical question about a Pokemon move that doesn't exist (Hidden Power Normal) and postulated whether an ability which turns all Normal-type moves into Fairy-type (Pixilate) would work on it. Not a question up to snuff for Arqade, but we're not just a Q&A group, we allow hypothetical discussions like that :)
it is ~10:15 am for you right? @Robotnik
@Dragonrage yup
@Robotnik can you please tell me about some flaws that you have
2
seriously
@Robotnik Serious question that could seriously determine where my vote is cast in this election (but not really serious, and in no way indicative of voting preference): Do you have an Australian accent?
@GodEmperorDune I should be working right now, but instead I'm online chatting? :P
00:19
thought so. I have some friends from australia and i always keep track of it by remembering im 5 hours ahead, but a day in the past
@Fluttershy Yes. I also have a let's play channel so you can hear it if you want :P
@Fluttershy can i be the judge of his accents strength? I regularly chat with aussies
@Dragonrage I can put on a really ocker accent if needed
@Robotnik you should post a video of you doing that, then i could imitate it :)
Yep. That's an Australian accent alright. Man, those are the best.
00:21
im pretty good at picking up european accents and the australian accent is similar to the english accent
It's not Paul Hogan strong, but it's still cool. :3 I played WoW with an Aussie lady. TeamSpeak was always a blast when she was on.
@Dragonrage I can say stuff like 'strewth' or ''av a go mate!' or 'I drink Fosters' which you'll never hear an Australian say :P
@Robotnik "that's not a knife... this is a knife"
@Robotnik I learned this when I was in Iraq. Fosters is not, in fact, Australian for beer.
@Fluttershy because fosters is iraqi for beer?
00:23
@Fluttershy Toohey's or VB are the "standard beers" in Aus that you'll almost find anywhere
@GodEmperorDune Oh, no! I should've specified. I was on a COB that was controlled by a coalition of British and Australian troops.
@Robotnik you claim that idle chatter is not for you, and as such you dont join the bridge much, yet you seem to be chatting idly now. what say you?
@Dragonrage I am responding to @ pings
as I said that I do :)
hmm, okay. I'll just be sure to ping you a lot then :)
@Dragonrage Note that I'm also about to go AFK for like, 6 hours and get some work done lol

@Robotnik see, now I'm curious about the hidden-power scenario. Seeing the question posted would make me more interested in Arqade general, I think, as it sounds creative and innovative. On the other hand it seems likely to have made the task of moderation and keeping the questions focused more difficult, so I can see why it was disallowed. I can see both sides here.
Regarding the user's behaviour: It seems odd of a user to be telling people to "fuck off" at such an apparently small trigger unless there are deeper and/or pre-existing issues, and I would suggest they might be more complex than the chat post seems to indicate. At least, that's what I've got from the chat post made about it, and the log of conversation with the moderator.
08:52
The final paragraph is impressive, and probably the reason why I find Arqade to be one of the better moderated sites on Stack Exchange at the moment.
09:12
@PeterD - just to clarify: it's not an Arqade post, as I mention it's from a facebook group I admin :-). I just made the point that Arqade wouldn't have allowed such a hypothetical scenario
@Robotnik Wouldn't have allowed? In what sense?
Also it wasn't exactly 'fuck off' but it was equally as rude and dismissive, but like I said I even just warned him first. It wasn't until he turned on me did he earn the strike.
@Peter HP normal doesn't exist. It would be closed as being speculative
@Robotnik It was the speculative part that interested me. I didn't expect it.
@Peter yeah it was an interesting discussion. Shame the OP deleted it because of the user I striked
@Robotnik have you any idea why the user reacted with upset? Do they have a particular personality which lends itself to dislike of speculative questions, anything like that, in your view?
09:28
@PeterD - No idea really, just came into the conversation half-cocked and looking for an excuse to start something I'd say. Like I said, most of his points were valid, but something obviously snapped and he started telling other members off.
@Robotnik sounds interesting. It would be the kind of situation where I might like to lurk, see if I could work out if there was actual or attempted bullying of the user before or after they started telling people off.
In my experience when someone starts yelling at members of a group seemingly indiscriminately that's often the cause.
Though often these things are quite subtle.
09:59
@Peter - That's been my general experience too.ut i used this example as the question was about how nominees dealt with duress and it was a good example of that.
*but
@Robotnik I don't understand the use of the word 'duress' in this instance.
@Peter *stress. I think I may have been autocorrected
Currently walking home haha
no problem; gonna play Skyrim for a bit
bye for now
No worries, nice talking to you :-)
@Robotnik how would you deal with the user's comment below the SevenSidedDie answer?
10:43
Okay, so been thining on this one, and I finally have time to reply so what I would do would depend on whether or not it's a user who the moderator team has had problems with behaviour.

If the user has mostly been on a good behaviour, then if they started insulting me after I warned folks to "be nice/civil", then I'd give them a short suspension. If it was after I took a different action, like closing their question, I'd delete their comment and give them a"be nice" warning, and link them to the FAQ.
cc @GodEmperorDune too, since I'm sure you'll be itnerested
but the tl;dr is for users with a record of good behaviour I'd want to give a "be nice" warning before handing out a short suspension, but for users who re consistently on bad behaviour and have been hit with suspensions for it before I wouldn't always bother with a warning and would hand out longer suspensions a lot quicker.
As for the "upper limit" on how long I'd give a user I'd say a week? A suspension longer than a week strikes me as something the site mods should talk about before handing out, but I could be wrong.
@Wipqozn if there was a problem with revenge downvotes aimed at a particular user for, for example off-site disagreements (e.g. "their girlfriend(s) were flirting with me right in front of them",) or on-site disagreements (e.g. we had an argument in the comments and I got my friends to help me with voting against the user as a result) how would you a) identify that it was happening b) deal with it?
10:59
@PeterDavidCarter-Poulsen I probably wouldn't need to, since there's an automated system in place to deal with serial downvoting.
@Wipqozn Doesn't seem to work, IMO.
I disagreee there, but as for how I'd identify it I don't believe moderators can (but maybe I'm wrong @badp?). Users votes are intended to be private, and for good reason, and I don' thinkt moderators have anyway to determine which posts someone is voting on.
We have some numbers, but not all numbers
Details are not public
we can also ask CMs to look into suspicious things
they probably have something closer to "all numbers"
Okay, well if I was able to get confirmation somehow that serial downvoting was going on, that wasn't picked up by the system for some reason then....well tbh I'm not sure what I'd do. Easy to say "I'd chat with with the user and tell them to stop", but I also have a feeling that standard procedure for something like this might be tell the CMs? "This user is serial downvoting, but the system hasn't picked it up".
you'd definitly want to let the CMs know either wy, really, since they could reverse votes if required and improve their magic autodetection system
12:29
I assume you mean your comment? I'd probably just delete it. Comments on SE are always said to be temporary and subject to deletion at any time. As your comment is not clarifying or commenting on the post's *contents* but rather a user-to-user interaction that is happening on another network site, I don't think it's appropriate to remain on the answer.

If SevenSidedDie came back with a response and you two started discussing on or off site matters, I'd move the discussion to chat and redirect you there. If the discussion was primarily about off-site things (RPG.SE matters), I'd direct you
okay it's decided, I'm voting for the more concise candidates
@badp tl;dr I'd remove the comment :P
@Robotnik sounds like a fair response. You wouldn't be able to follow me there as I've been banned for a year.

2 hours later…
14:30
@badp This reminds me of my original gravatar.
14:43
@Fluttershy Who were you before you were Fluttershy?
Or were you always fluttershy
@Tristan
15:36
That was my username. My gravatar was Link laughing with his hand over his mouth.
I changed my name to Fluttershy as an April Fool's joke, and then kept it for some reason. :P
15:52
9 messages moved to The Bridge
@Fluttershy I MISS THOSE DAYS
@Wipqozn @Fluttershy should be link, @Unionhawk should be a triforce, and @Wipqozn should be a turtle. How have we got a full roster of terrible people this time around?
@fredley I promise to change my avatar back to a Turtle if elected.
@Wipqozn Don't-believe-his-lies.wipqozn.jpg
@fredley I'm not lying.
Although you could say I'm being misleading................................................................but don't worry about that
I still haven't chosen a third vote yet.
16:00
His steam avatar probably
@Unionhawk no, it will be my avatar on the site
@fredley to be fair, he admitted he will change it for a day, then swap back. Is it still lying if you put it in invisible text as part of your mod questionnaire response?
@GodEmperorDune That's why I'm being misleading, and not lying.
JUST LIKE ANY GOOD POLITICIAN
also @GodEmperorDune I tihnk I cc'd you, but I replied to @JoshPetrie question earlier, when he clarified what he meant by "user backlash"
I actually stole the invisible text idea from @aurevoir. He did it somewhere on some meta post once.
Didn't even realize SE posts let you have HTML comments until then
@Wipqozn there was also the SFF mod who posted that racist stuff as an html comment
@GodEmperorDune Oh wow, didn't hear about that. That's nuts.,
16:22
my mistake it was a nazi reference
oh wait yes there is another n word in there too
Either way it was an Incredibly Dumb Edit
@Unionhawk crosses the line to rude/offensive IMO
Rude/offensive is a subset of Incredibly Dumb
banworthy too, IMO
@Unionhawk fair enough
As is bannable
16:44
@Wipqozn Vote for yourself
@fredley but I'm my first vote. I can't be third and first! That's crazy.
It'll probably be @Unionhawk, but I'm considering @Fluttershy too.
I should just make them fight to the death.
17:24
@Wipqozn then we would lose a valuable member of the arqade. Also, i think killing your competition is unethical.
@Dragonrage Depends on the competition.
@Yuuki in the context of this election, i think killing your competition would get you disqualified, and other things too most likely.
@Dragonrage is there an actual written ruling on that?
user15026
17:45
....does there need to be?
18:06
@AshleyNunn i think it falls under "be nice"
