Q: What happens if Mordenkainen's Private Sanctum gets cast inside a Genie Warlock's vessel?

MavocSpecifically the part of Private Sanctum that reads Nothing can teleport into or out of the warded area. Planar travel is blocked within the warded area. Would this affect the ability to enter or leave the Genie's Vessel? Would it affect the auto eject time limit of the vessel? What happens ...

I have a wierd scenario and I need game design advice about what I should do about it. Does anyone have a second to weigh in on something?

I have at least 3 seconds

uh sure
not 100% sure I can help with it because I don't know what it is yet but I can at least listen and evaluate that part XD

So forever ago (last June) I wrote this thing, a role playing game called ensign of the week that’s basically a sci-fi thing but with magic. Now I’m rewriting it, and I think I need to change the magic system, but I’m not sure to what extent.
The pros I see of this: it focuses the game more on the sci-fi themes I want, it’s an overly complex system that makes playing harder, and nobody used it when I play tested the game.
The cons: it makes it less “sci-fi with secret magic” no matter what I choose and more “sci-fi”, it changes the premise of the game, and I personally really liked the magic system when I wrote it

hmm

My original idea was “cut it entirely”, but “simplify it” or “make it optional came up as other ideas.
Does anyone have opinions or advice?

4:47 AM
well
it seems to me like you have two ideas you like but that they clash with each other
every time I have personally tried to do something like that it turned out it would have been a better idea to do the things seperately
maybe this is more a Sci Fi thing and you should do the magic thing as it's own thing?

@trogdor that’s my thought as well, kinda

or you know vise versa I don't care if you call your magic thing ensign of the week XD

What sort of scenarios and challenges were in the playtest? You mention nobody used the magic system - were there opportunities when it made sense to do so?

but on that note, maybe the people who you playtested it with didn't expect the magic stuff in a game with a more sci fi leaning name?

@MikeQ there were a few, but the solutions could also be nonmagical and they chose non magic solutions

4:52 AM
> What is my game about?
How does my game do this?
How does my game encourage / reward this?
How do I make this fun?
4

@trogdor point.
@MikeQ also my best friend said “ya know, if you cut the other systems people would use this more cause it’d be the least complicated option...”

Design often involves going through multiple iterations, keeping track of the changes and testing each new version. So maybe do that. Save a copy of what you have now, then make edits, and playtest the new version, and compare the results. You'll likely go through a few rounds of this before reaching a version that achieves your goal.

Your magic system looks like it's derived strongly from D&D. Is that intentional?

@MikeQ I’m working on doing that now, yeah. I don’t have steady playtesters though so it’s a lot of trying to take any chance I get, and sometimes that’s three days in one week and sometimes it’s once in a whole month.
@BESW it wasn’t meant to be
It was meant to match that of a completely different story/setting/world I’ve been using for years, but I can see the similarities now that I think of it.

I'd be inclined to have magic in that setting do anything that technology can do, but choose one: without the tools or machines others would need; better (faster, more, further); or with the ability to re-roll your lowest d6.
Levitate, then, is "fly without jetpack."
Creating objects is "manifest without replicator."

5:01 AM
@BESW that’s an interesting idea! I will add it to the list of options to consider.

Level up in a particular kind of magic, and you can choose two.
The alternative I'd consider is to go hard the other way and distinguish magic by making things that technology can never do, but magic can; and the two don't overlap.

Polymorph: Pickle is "The funniest thing I've ever seen."

Otherwise there's not really a reason to have a separate mechanical system, is there, if magic is just achieving technological effects without the technology.

5:15 AM
Would be difficult to think of many things that couldn't be done by technology, if we're allowing jetpacks and replicators. Or do you mean not allow jetpacks and replicators and leave that to magic?

@BESW ok, that’s probably a good point

A lot of skill-based systems make magic one or two skills which can replace specializing in other skills (like using a location spell instead of the Perception skill), but at the cost of time/energy/attention.
you've already got the "calls attention to yourself" as a strong limiter on magic in your setting.
Which probably means you don't need to gate it much more than that, and instead make it as easy and tempting to use as possible in order to lure players into making the risky choices that are the reason you've put magic into the game.

Maybe the attitudes toward magic are a little incongruous with the setting, though. Isn't this supposed to be a scifi setting where the major factions are tolerant and curious? Why does nobody know magic exists? Why would they try to hurt magic users?

5:31 AM
@MikeQ Now I'm imagining that it's set in the future of Time Shall Not Mend.
(A crossover fanfic by AJ Hall in which magic-users hide in the shadows of Bujold's Vorkosigan novels.)

@BardicWizard More specifically, if nobody knows magic exists, then why is it assumed that a magic user would be hurt for having magic powers? Couldn't it just be rationalized as another sci-fi anomaly?

Isn't it probably the same "they'll dissect me for science" justification we get in almost any "I have powers nobody knows about and must keep it a secret" story?

Maybe that's the idea behind it. But if this mechanic tied to a big taboo with dire consequences, then that might be working against their design goals, if they want to encourage players to use it more.

Aye, that's a big stumbling block in a lot of TRPGs.
It's one reason I'd be inclined to make magic spoof existing abilities; easier to talk your way out of if somebody notices the effects.

1 hour later…
7:01 AM
@Akixkisu I think a welcome message - even a "form message", as long as it's appropriately written - is a good way to start that interaction, at least :)

7:58 AM
@BESW For some reason I've always found the plot backdrop of being threatened by exactly this, or loss of freedom, or similar rather compelling
Must be my childhood when there were thirteen mutant hero teams in a dozen.

See also: Fifth Season.

It's a plot structure that works. "Protagonist must avoid [captors] while pursuing [objective]". Like The Fugitive.
@BESW The novel? I've heard of it but haven't gotten around to reading it yet
I'm not very... up to speed in my reading game.

Yeah, a major theme in that series is exploring the mechanisms of systematic exploitation: that the powers in the world use demonization to control the class of people they rely on most heavily to maintain their power.
That is, while the main characters have the power to flee the physical constraints and pursuits of their oppressors, the social prejudice and internalized self-loathing are much harder to escape.

8:15 AM
@BESW This is a very interesting angle. Quite often, in those "hiding powered individual" type of stories the demonization is taken pretty much for granted.
I think X-men is a notable exception? I've never read the comics.

X-Men depends on the era and author for pretty much all of its treatments.

Ah yeah. That's the usual comic book disclaimer I suppose :)

But I've never seen it really dig into the entrenched systemic elements that its real-life counterparts experience.

Yes, it's a whole new layer if you add the "who benefits from the demonization" angle

Like, it began as an allegory for racial oppression, and specifically Civil Rights issues with Black Americans, but because mutants are new to society, it could never address the underlying Civil Rights realities like how demonization of Black people was (is) used specifically to treat them as an exploitable and disposable workforce.
And my typing is especially bad tonight.

8:21 AM
@V2Blast Even when I leave personalised welcome-formula-style comments that are also issue related, I get no to very little engagement. When I ask direct-issue-related questions, I get a decent amount of engagement - what is your experience?

Jemisin gets annoyed when people ask her why the powered characters in Broken Earth don't just overthrow their oppressors, since they have so much more physical might. Because her book is about exactly that, how a system of oppression is designed to be self-continuing and recruit even the oppressed into perpetuating their own oppression. (And about how it's possible to break free--but with great effort and great cost.)
The books explore several different people finding the limits (or lack of limits) on what they're willing to do to change the world, and what they think needs to be changed.

@TheOracle Commenting!

@BESW I can dig this

@BESW that's awesome

11:17 AM
I'm... I'm not a Kraft singles kind of guy

She is, though.

Mhhmm and that's awesome
My wife is a fan, but we've not had them in a long time

Yeah, outside of some very specific comfort junk food I don't really do Kraft Singles. We do sometimes get pre-sliced Tillamook cheddar though, and that's great.
I wouldn't get it most times if I had a choice, just because of the extra packaging trash, but there were times during caregiving when energy was low enough that pre-sliced cheese was the difference between cheese and crackers, and just a handful of crackers.

@BESW they look similar to Kraft?
@BESW Mhmm it's good for that

Yeah, but Tillamook is Actual Proper Cheese.

11:29 AM
@BESW we have at times 3-6 types of cheese in the fridge from time to time, but a mainstay are cream cheese squares that go very well on crackers
@BESW google was deceptive

11:49 AM
@BESW Yeah we regularly have sliced cheese here

12:07 PM
I come into the chat and all I see is talk about cheese. This pleases me

thanks for reminding me @BaconyRevanant I need to defrost some cheese!

@Akixkisu You've gotta start somewhere. "Hi, nice to see you, welcome to our place" isn't a bad place to start.

@AncientSwordRage Whatcha makin with it?

@KorvinStarmast I would stop before you get to "You killed my father" and definitely don't say "Prepare to die" (unless they should)
@RevanantBacon Omelette

@AncientSwordRage Actually, that's a different ice breaker than the one I offered. As I recall the scene, Inigo wasn't welcoming the Count to his place ... 😁

@AncientSwordRage With onions and peppers I hope, and possibly a non-pork based bacon substitute.

1:45 PM
@KorvinStarmast You may have an earlier edition of the book...
@RevanantBacon I may have more things to defrost. We don't have any non-pork bacon (we've been enjoying Macon, which is mutton bacon) there is something else I can get out the freezer
I can't eat onions, and we're out of peps atm...

ok so I can eat them, it's just something that doesn't go well mot of the time

Ah, unfortunate none the less. I LOVE onions. Almost as much as I love bacon

I also love onions

I love onions, I share the unfortunate condition of not being able to eat them without digestive problems though.
Or did until recently. I've gotten some stress off my back and possibly relating to that my stomach takes small quantities of onion fairly well nowadays.

@kviiri My wife experiences this with raw onions, but sauteed onions dont seem to give her any trouble.

Are raw onions more of a problem than cooked ones (or the reverse), or are they both about the same?
lol, the timing

@ThomasMarkov For me, either works sadly. Or used to x) I'm much better now

2:17 PM
@AncientSwordRage My dad has this same unfortunate reaction. He loved onions, but his body does strange things when they are introduced ...

I was super relieved to find out it was the onions behind it! My mother for some reason was fixated upon it being gluten insensitivity and constantly badgered me to get a blood test
but I felt anxious about going because 1) it was really improbable: gluten is a big-ish part of my diet and hasn't correlated significantly with stomach troubles and 2) if she had been right still, she could've used it as an excuse to load broadsides of unsolicited medical advice at will

@Akixkisu I can't in my own good faith upvote your meta answer about comments. I love funny comments way too much and I do think they add something positive to the site experience.

@NautArch K but what about funny answers that should have been comments?
"Comments are inherently undesirable" [Citation Needed]

@ThomasMarkov DELETE

@NautArch I love funny comments way too much and I do think they add something positive to the site experience Yes, this isn't a coding cite.
@ThomasMarkov They are good if up voted by the community who votes.

2:25 PM
@ThomasMarkov I differentiate comments and suggestions, and define what I mean thereafter.

@KorvinStarmast Maybe, Im just uncomfortable with the idea that I have to wait to see how the community votes before being able to determine if an answer is good. I really think I should be able to determine if an answer is appropriate without seeing the score.

@kviiri that excellent to hear

@Akixkisu Right, my point is that you just put forward an assertion with no justification.

@KorvinStarmast strange things is one way to put it
I can blend them up with other things, and fry them off and it sometimes works
I hadn't associated it with stress, but it might be that :/

3:03 PM
@ThomasMarkov it is an assertion that I make, and it is fine if you disagree with it. There is no citation needed, you might want one.

@Akixkisu I think if that's an assertion of yours it's fine to make, but if you're saying that rpg.se shares that, it needs to be supported.

@NautArch I think I will just disengage.

So, EA Play on Steam is not the same EA Play that origin sells you.
It's got like 80% fewer games.

So supposedly Humble Bundle will be changing the maximum amount you can donate to charity (as in, the maximum percent of your donation) from 100% to 15% if this does happen, I am just going to drop them completely

oh geez, why?
i mean, do they think folks will spend more on the game if they can't spend it donation?

@NautArch I'm not sure the idea of support has strong applicability on meta does it? There may be times calling for it is relevant, but it's not universal when talking about how actions/features should be used, is it?

The reason I learned about this was this tweet and reading the HB post. I don't really see anything stating this change happening at all, but I'm still wary

@Someone_Evil Given that this is about another user's post who has left the chat, if we continue, we should do so in Dragons.
@Medix2 honestly, i just buy on steam. The easy single library is nice.

3:32 PM
Although now i've got origin for ea play. Neat way to try out a bunch of games.

Does the illusion of a mirror show reflections?

@RevanantBacon nope
pretty sure we've got a question on that

20
Q: Can you use Minor Illusion to create an illusion of a working mirror, i.e. with reflection?

SteveCCan you use Minor Illusion to create an illusion of a working mirror, i.e. with a working reflection?

^something like that one :P

There are a handful of games that, when they get added to your steam library, you get a product key to activate them on Origin (This is a relic from when EA decided to make their own platform for PC games, and allowed anyone who had purchased their games on steam to get copies of them free on origin).
Also, fun fact about EA play on steam: some of those games still give you free product keys even today

3:39 PM
orly?
At least I can still link the accounts so my saves transfer back and forth.

Yeah, there's like 10 or so games

Started playing titanfall 2 (didn't play one, was that a mistake) and I'm likig it more than halo.

I remember it being talked about a couple months ago when EA play first got announced
It's all older games that it can be done with, like Spore I think is one of them, and that game is like 15 years old
@Someone_Evil After reading the accepted answer, I remain unconvinced. Their logic is flawed

The highest scoring answer seems to agree with you. Or at least also disagree with the accepted

Well, after reading that answer as well, there seems to be a pretty good logic behind why it should work.

3:50 PM
That answer relies on actual physics way too much for my taste.

But the logic is sound. Illusions must reflect light in order to ever function
Anyways, I was thinking up a dungeon that involved a puzzle with mirrors that reflect sunlight throughout the dungeon
And the wizard that built it decided that real mirrors were too expensive, so he just Silent Imaged up a bunch with level 6 slots so they would be permanent

4:58 PM
do we have a guidance on when a tag should be burninated

I don't think we have a general one, there may be on MSE though
Is there a specific tag you're concerned with?

@Someone_Evil [combat]
It's seen a lot of use, but I have yet to come across a question where another tag did not already comntribute the same thing the combat tag did, but with more specificity to what was being asked about

have we stopped talking about cheese and onions?

@ThomasMarkov It might have some over/misuse, but it's certainly a distinct topic inside multiple systems

5:12 PM
@Someone_Evil I get that it's a topic, but is it ever used as a standalone tag?

@AncientSwordRage We haven't got tags for either of those, and shouldn't. But we do have a meta thing for the former

@AncientSwordRage We have for now, but I'm always open to discussing them further

@ThomasMarkov It can. Perfectly possible to ask about combat, though many of the questions are gonna be about some subsystem thereof
I suppose worth noting re the standalone tag concept, here it's generally gonna mean the only tag other than a system tag, don't remember where that's discussed though

@Someone_Evil well yeah
15
Q: Is the Only-Tag Test for meta-tag-ness broken here?

SevenSidedDieWe've talked about meta tags a lot here. One thing that the last round highlighted is that we have a lot of tags that are impossible to use without a system tag. It's been said that tags like spells or rules-as-written maybe shouldn't exist because they can't be the only tag on a question. Perhap...

@Someone_Evil not even sure what onions would be...
@RevanantBacon I just like food ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

5:25 PM
@AncientSwordRage They are generally fist sized, bulbous vegetable

@Someone_Evil Don't forget they layers too, kind of like Ogres

@ThomasMarkov this entire model is based on the wisdom of the crowds. As Treebeard might say, let's not be hasty. 😊 One person's opinion isn't that important, in the SE model.
@AncientSwordRage That was a song by Monty Python in their Beatlemania parody The Ruttles
@RevanantBacon They are also like a parfait

@Someone_Evil I mean in relation to the website, silly :p

@AncientSwordRage Oh, I wouldn't say onions are related to websites at all, since they're a member of the allium category of plants
XD

@RevanantBacon I'll allium you :p

5:45 PM
@AncientSwordRage Whoops, been to long since I saw All You Need Is Cash Wasn't really a Monty Python thing ...

@KorvinStarmast google says it was an Eric Idles thing

@AncientSwordRage I had cheddar-onion-bbq-pork burgers last night for dinner, if you want some more cheese and onion talk.
(On the other hand, I think you may be fasting during Ramadan, so that's kind of a double-slap in the face?)

@nitsua60 sounds really good
@nitsua60 no I'm not feeling that hungry right not, I really don't mind food talk during ramadan :D
I have these in the freezer ready for the right day

@AncientSwordRage Eric Idle and Neil Innes

6:02 PM
Lorne Michaels and Gary Weis were also involved?

6:32 PM
@AncientSwordRage Those look good. Have you tried any yet?

I think I've decided I'm not super into the plant-based meat replacements.

@RevanantBacon not yet, it was expensive so I'm hoping it's good?

@NautArch I find it depends on what its trying to be. Facon is a hard no, but black-bean veggie burgers are really good.

@RevanantBacon Oh, blackbean burgers i'm all over.
I mean the lab-meat.
like impossible

Oh, yeah gotcha

6:43 PM
that, and my stomach went all sideways after eating one, so that didn't help either.

I think it's the flavoring that they use, it doesn't taste quite right. The texture is off too, but I can get over that.
@AncientSwordRage Let me know how they are once you do try them

I really want to try impossible burgers
@RevanantBacon will do, I'm probably more likely to have them sooner now

@RevanantBacon For me, they feel like the margarine of meat.
I'd rather get well sourced meat.

On a related note, what I do find is surprisingly good is plant-based cheese. It's remarkably similar in both flavor and texture

@RevanantBacon no, not for me, unless it's HEAVILY flavoured
Also it's often heavy in Soya which is another reason for me to avoid it

6:48 PM
i have 4 sessions left

As a note: I'm not lactose intolerant, but there's a cooking youtuber that I watch who's vegan, and he's an amazing chef
So I've tried out a few of his recipes

@AncientSwordRage Burger King's impossible whopper is pretty nasty imo. I've had some from more reputable establishments that were pretty decent.

Anyways, I've found that it's heavily brand dependent for the cheese quality
@ThomasMarkov I haven't tried that as a matter of principle lol. I'll definitely take your word for it

@ThomasMarkov We don't have that option in BK here
I'd be much more likely to buy fresh/frozen and cook myself
@RevanantBacon what brands do you recommend? Because I am lactose intolerant, so I avoid lactose as a matter of courtesy to my wife

@RevanantBacon That's where I am, I think. I like a plant-made patty-shaped thing-that-tastes-good-when-hot as much as a good burger, but not when it's trying to pretend to be a burger.

6:55 PM
@AncientSwordRage I'll have to check the fridge when I get home, I have half a bag from my last shopping trip but I can't remember the name of it off the top of my head.

:57781817
But their chicken sandwiches are legit.

any way to add an image description/transcription? :) Currently pictures are blocked for me

@NautArch yes
@RevanantBacon we tried some, my wife hates it; I found it to melt OK onto chips that had jalapeno slices, baked nachos, but on a cracker or with some grapes ... not great.

7:08 PM
@bobble it's packaging for "the vegilantes plant protein z*ngers", which appear to be some kind of plant-based burger.

Oh, I meant to the answer that was linked in the prior message
Just has the standard "enter image description here"

@nitsua60 I have a vegetarian black bean chili that I make during lent that I'd love to make for you, but it would get cold by the time I shipped it up north ... 😣
Hmm, I think I'll make a batch tomorrow, we have three bags of blackbeans in the cupboard.
I'll start soaking them tonight.

7:21 PM
@bobble wait, which answer? the one ASR linked doesn't have an image in it

@Carcer I think they're referring to the image I replaced with a table :)

historical revisionism
this shouldn't be allowed

Someone tablewashed the answer!

Fewer images and more printable text is usually good. Even better if it's tagged in such a way that it's obvious it's a table.

thank you for all the great ideas everyone

7:59 PM
@KorvinStarmast My sister like to make meatless chili, and she puts in like 5 kinds of beans. I know it's got black and kidney, I feel like one of the others is navy (or one of those other small kinds, maybe lentils?) and I completely forget the other two

Quick Steel Wind Strike inquiry: if I cast it and there are 4 enemies, not 5, do I only get to attack 4 enemies or does one of them get attacked twice?
@RevanantBacon I have a similar soup that has black beans, chick peas, kidney beans, pinto beans. One can crushed tomatoes, and either chicken broth or vegetable broth.

@KorvinStarmast I'd think it's only 4.

4 attacks. You pick up to 5 targets and make one attack per target
> Choose up to five creatures you can see within range. Make a melee spell attack against each target.

@NautArch Rats, I was having a visual of the Diablo III ability "seven sided strike" but I guess that's not how it works.

@KorvinStarmast still haven't played diablo :(

8:01 PM
@KorvinStarmast It's gotta be chick and pinto then
@KorvinStarmast Nope, not how it works :(
On an unrelated note, did you decide on a build for your rogue?

@RevanantBacon For savory I tend to add bay leaves, orange zest, taragon, and of course all of my soup have chopped onions and crushed garlic first ... and salt and pepper. I tried fennel seeds once in that soup and the wife gave me strict orders not to do that again.

Can't say I blame her, fennel in soup sounds... iffy at best

@NautArch The original game is a must. (IMO) Diablo II was pretty good. Diablo III you can give a pass to. Diablo IV is coming out and I simply must play it ... must!!!!!!!!
@RevanantBacon Fennel/anise often overpowers a dish, like cloves ...

Cilantro can have that effect as well

@RevanantBacon That's called soap, and I refuse to cook with it. Now and again a garnish afterwards ...

8:05 PM
I dunno, it tastes pretty good when you add it to salsa
And apparently it's one of the key ingredients in cola
Although I'm not really a fan of cola so...

@KorvinStarmast if steel wind strike could do all 5 attacks on one target I think that would make it the highest damage one-round single target technique in the game

@Carcer yeah. grin which would make it a higher level spell.
So here's my idea. As you upcast it, you can apply one of the exgtra strikes to an already hit target, such that by level 9, you can to it all at one target. ... just a thought for a homebrew ...
30 d10 if they all hit, but, each attack still requires a to hit roll ...

Since you're using a melee weapon to make the attacks, you can apply Sneak Attack as well right?

@RevanantBacon I've had to substitute kidney beans for a tin of baked beans (haricot?) to make them edible for me

Step 1. Get the monk to stun them; step 2, Bard goes steel wind strike all over the target. Step 3: roll damage Step 4; profit.
@RevanantBacon Only if one is a rogue

8:17 PM
@NautArch highly recommend for a bit of mindless fun

@NautArch I think I have two Diablo I discs. If I can dig them out of storage, I promise to mail you one of them.
But make sure to down load all patches from Blizzard, or a mirror site, before playing or the darned disc will hang up in a couple of the quests ...

@NautArch Yeah. There's two old games by Blizzard North called Diablo and Diablo 2. Just like the Matrix, it is a shame they didn't continue making more in the series.

Diablo IV promises to get back to the roots of Diabo rather than "who can create the finese DPS machine?"

GcL
@KorvinStarmast and a freakin' level 9 spell slot.

@GcL yes, and my Bard could do that if she takes the spell. 😁 When she gets to level 10, I am taking Wall of Force and ... 1 other spell ... SWS is soooooooo tempting

8:21 PM
@KorvinStarmast I hope it doesn't scrimp on classes and options

GcL
@KorvinStarmast You play characters long enough to get L9 spell slots?
3

I did enjoy how the wizard worked though

GcL
@KorvinStarmast I hear a lot of promises from game publishers that want my money.

@GcL not yet, but this campaign may get that far. Our DM is doing massive world building through our actions ...
@GcL and blizzard has never met a release date that it could not miss.

@KorvinStarmast they are attacks, and can crit - there's some cheese involving being an elf with elven accuracy to maximise expected damage

8:22 PM
@Carcer true, I think it's the blade singer's nova moment, that spell, isn't it?

it certainly is fun when it goes well

but I HATE D&D 5e racial feats with a capital H. personal quirk. Feats must be accessible to all PCs, all of them. rant now censored

@KorvinStarmast I like the idea if furthering your races traits though

@AncientSwordRage I don't think feats is the way to do that. You aren't becoming a better elf, your becoming a better "this profession" as you adventure.
anyhoo, that's a pet peeve of mine.

it's understandable

8:26 PM
It is one of two parts of XGtE that I dislike: Hex Blades and Racial feats. it's otherwise a pretty nice addition to the game.

I'd allow anyone to take Elven Accuracy but not the Dragon Fear

Tasha's is kinda sloppy and inconsistent. It's best new 'thing' IMO is (you can respec a cantrip at ASI) and (tattoos!)

@KorvinStarmast kinda?
but yeah, i'm all good with respeccing. I do that with my players anyway. If you'r enot having fun, we're not having fun.

My lore bard has green flame blade, and while it's an underwhelming choice, now and again that flashing bluegreen sea foam fire going off (he reflavored it since my bard is sailor background/privateer) has been epic, on the occasional crit.

@KorvinStarmast how do you feel about the Dragon X feats for Dragonborn?

8:36 PM
@KorvinStarmast I did a two level warlock dip with my lore bard
no regerts

@AncientSwordRage still pondering. It's the UA, right, or do you mean Xanathar's?

@KorvinStarmast Xanathar's

If it's XGTE, using feats to fix the base problem in the class strikes me as {term censored}

Dragon Hide, Dragon Fear etc...

@AncientSwordRage I would rather they fix the base class.
Hex blade was a bad attempt to fix the problems with Pact of Blade ... {rant censored}

8:38 PM
@KorvinStarmast s/class/race/ ?

The new UA they have out for the dragonborn race is promising. I did a review, commented at GiTP as usual, and need to offer my feedback at the WoTC site.

@KorvinStarmast half the problem with that is that EB is TOO good

And what hexblade really did was make Warlock an even better 1-level dip class

@KorvinStarmast care to share?

@AncientSwordRage not really. The problem is multiclassing. :)

8:39 PM
@KorvinStarmast that too

(if they made EB a Warlock Class feature it would be an improvement)

2 levels of warlock and a non-negative charisma score, and you'll never need a ranged weapon again

@AncientSwordRage lemme go find the GiTP thread, brb

And if you go hexblade, you'll never need another melee weapon again

I'd like to build a warlock where spamming EB wasn't the best DPS despite build. I'm very against "solved problem" builds

8:41 PM
@RevanantBacon to answer your question, we have another month before campaign start, and no, I have not make a decision. I am hoping for @Akixkisu bard answer, and hoping @ThomasMarkov will have time for an answer we discussed ...

@AncientSwordRage The problem is your HP, and the warlock has that solved.
:p

@RevanantBacon celestial warlock ? :-P
EB would still be good if it did d8 damage, right?

Celestial Warlock solves your HP and the enemies

3
5
6
4

8:43 PM
That's plenty

The main benefits of EB is that A) it hits multiple times, rather than just once, and B) that you can add your stat bonus to damage for each of those hits

@AncientSwordRage I liked my hexblade battlemaster build

Dropping from d10 to d8 is a 1 point average damage drop
you could drop to d6 and it would still be good
4d6

that's because in general the damage dice aren't that big of a deal.

8:45 PM
@KorvinStarmast dang, now i dont remember what we talked about

@NautArch Right, the flat damage is the big benefit
and +5 per hit is pretty solid

Yep
also, false life invocation is great

In fact, it's really hard to consider taking a feat for levels 4 and 8 on warlocks because of just how much charisma helps you. It's the key stat in everything you do

@RevanantBacon my concern is that it makes all Warlocks feel like generic warlocks not each of their subclasses
At least on paper

@ThomasMarkov A while back I was talking to you about rogue/CBE and a build idea, it gestated a bit in my caffeine deprived brain (doc has me down to one cup per day, no mas) and I made that post about my Highwayman. I think a few days ago you made a comment about "I might have a bard answer" (guessing swords bard) but I am not sure if that idea didn't pan out. You have a good analytical mind, so I am interested to see what you were thinking ov

8:48 PM
Yes, that's because they just don't have any ranged spell attack options that can compete with EB

@KorvinStarmast Ill go find it in the logs, maybe I have two answers.

If you wanted to make them more variable, then instead of nerfing EB you may want to try adding things that can actually compete with it damage-wise

@RevanantBacon and also because it's warlock exclusive it funnels you into picking it

Or perhaps allow Agonizing Blast to be applies to any damaging cantrip, selected when the invocation is taken

cf. Hunter's Mark

8:50 PM
Like Agonizing Shocking Grasp

@RevanantBacon or one weapon attack per turn?
I like it

sometimes classes kind of depend on certain signature spells
hunter's mark is such for rangers

Well, the Lifedrinker invocation does kinda do that already, so do be wary of that doubling up, but yes, that would also work
Actually, it could be tripling up if they also take Hexblade
Also be careful of letting it combo with Booming and Green-Flame Balde
Not that it would be excessively strong
You would just want to keep an eye on it

Q: Does duplicate answers mean duplicate questions?

enkryptorI have seen questions being closed because they were already answered. Should the question be closed as a duplicate when its answer is the exact duplicate of an answer already being posted? An example question: Extra Attack & Eldritch Invocation Thirsting Blade Its proposed duplicate: Does this s...

Anyways, I'm off to home, so I'll try to remember to check that brand of cheese and report back

8:55 PM
@AncientSwordRage OK, to summarize my take on the UA regarding dragonborn: 1. Metallic Dragons upgrade: better. I like the shove/knocked prone, although why it isn't 10' versus 15 or 5 is unclear to me 2. Raulothim's Psychic Lance I am taking it on my bard. 3. Summone Draconic Spirit: Love It. Working with my DM on it on one campaign. 4. Gem Dragons: I like it, generally, as it's a reach back to AD&D 2e, but with no Gem Dragons in the MM now, uh, what? 5. Kobolds. OK
@AncientSwordRage this my post

@KorvinStarmast seems like a perfectly cromulant opinion
I was sort of meh when I looked at the while thing, but only because it didn't seem like enough if a change?

@TheOracle This is a duplicate.
Ironically, of OP's own question.

@AncientSwordRage I want the kobold tail strike to be 1d4, like tabaxi, not 1d6. Kobold is small, FFS. 😐 Also, for my brother's world when I DM (two dragon born in that game, Paladin and Sorcerer) I am putting the UA in place now, we'll play test it when I start DMing again in June.

9:18 PM
@KorvinStarmast tbh I could take or leave the tail strike
But I've got a fondness for Dragonborn and Kobolds, so it's exciting seeing something in UA
Two Dragonborn in a single campaign sounds mighty cool

GcL
@AncientSwordRage Two pugilists brothers punching evil doers and walking to the right. Call the campaign Double Dragon

@GcL this is d&d not pugmir.... Wait that's not what a pugilist is...

@ThomasMarkov I think maybe there's a more constructive way to point that out, if it needed pointing out (ref now gone comment)

9:34 PM
@AncientSwordRage They are brothers (in character), grew up in the same mill town, and are gold dragonborn. Paladin (devotion) and Sorcerer(Draconic Blood line, go figure) 😎

Q: What would happen if I were to use a Ring of Water Walking on a raging sea with very large waves?

EricL07What would happen if a character were to attempt to walk on the waves of a very tumultuous sea, using a Ring of Water Walking? Would they automatically remain standing on the waves? Or would these waves become something similar to a solid ground during a severe earthquake, requiring the character...

10:15 PM
@RevanantBacon I still maintain that EB should have had patron-specific variants, instead of just being pure damage.
I saw homebrew to do exactly that, although I lost the reference to it. 😭

10:30 PM
@KorvinStarmast Our dining hall makes an excellent vegan chili that--sorry, vegans--gets even better with a glop of pulled pork mixed in. It's one of my favorite lunches around here.
