Q: How does Whirlwind Strike interact with True Strike?

Vigo the BarbarianI have a Barbarian with Runescarred dedication. He is hasted and casts true strike and then makes a whirlwind strike. Whirlwind strike takes 3 actions but is essentially one strike (from feat name and narrative perspective), however, you need to "make a melee Strike against each enemy within your...

Probably gonna finish the presentation part of my dad's memorial today, which means it's time to get into the technical end of hosting a massive Zoom memorial.

Ben
@BESW oof
So far my day has been one failed event after the other, spent an hour and a half fixing it all, then finally after everything is resolved, I'm going to be writing technical/user documentation all day

@Ben Over 150 slides, with a unique photo from my dad's archives on each one, set to some of his favorite prayers and spiritual songs.

Ben
@BESW That part does sound really good.
I'd have a good time going through all those good memories.
It's the rest of the Zoom stuff I'd be concerned about lol

Yeah, and I've never done anything significant with Zoom before.

1:03 AM
@BESW that sounds like a real achievement

Q: How do I deal with instant-solution spells like Comprehend Languages?

BeefsterI'm DM-ing an upcoming campaign and am considering banning or nerfing spells like Comprehend Languages because they can be used to instantly solve potentially interesting problems like reading an ancient text. I'd prefer to avoid banning spells and would like some advice on techniques for working...

@Adeptus Where we're going,we don't need Sneak Attack. (Plus, casting Hex and hitting all 4 bolts from EB is almost like adding in Sneak Attack anyways)
@AncientSwordRage Found the cheese. Brand is called Daiya. Lactose, Soy, and Gluten free

@BESW hoping that goes well for you

@RevanantBacon they make a decent product, although I had to ditch their slices because they stopped putting slip sheets between them

@Shalvenay Oh no
that probably doesn't work out very well

@RevanantBacon I'll look out for it

we wind up using the Violife instead for that

Q: When an NPC is under the effect of Dominate Person, can they cast spells under orders?

Gabriel BurchfieldIf a PC casts dominate person on an NPC, can they (the PC) require the NPC to cast spells? Some of the spells I had in mind were fireball, dominate, etc.

Q: Extra Attack & Eldritch Invocation Thirsting Blade

Mike Z.I am playing D&D 5e and I have a question on my character. I am playing a Half-Orc Fighter level 7 and Warlock level 3. Q: What level, if any, of feedback should players give a new GM?

Isaac MiddlemissI've recently started playing D&D with a few friends, most of whom are new-ish to the game. Our GM is running their first world, and while their world building is very impressive, when it comes to the mechanics of gameplay it feels like there's a lot of room for improvement in their knowledge and...

rpg.stackexchange.com/a/133983/44723 this argument "If you score a critical hit, you must have hit." always strikes me as iffy when it resurfaces through various edits.

why

Because a critical hit is a distinct specific rule.
It doesn't change the outcome, but it always feels iffy.

Has anyone cooked any recipes from Heroes' Feast?

@Axoren is there a book with the same name as the spell?

For some reason, I couldn't find it on D&D Beyond

2:19 PM
@Axoren why would it be there?

Looks interesting though.

I feel like D&D Beyond not having it makes it an incomplete resource on D&D Published material

@Axoren it always has been a resource for adventures and rules, not for novels etc.

They have an example recipe on the page:

Reading the reviews makes it unfortunately obvious that it isn't my kind of product, but looks like it would be pretty neat for many people.

@Axoren I would make this if only I had a stand mixer

In the answer here one of the items in the list of structured feedback prompts has an inconsistent tense, "Described a storyline/theme that you didn't enjoy and would prefer to avoid in future." (as opposed to "Describe"). Can someone fix it so my brain will quiet down?

Q: How can Flameskulls cast fireball without fingers?

47948201This thread points out that although DMs can (and probably should) interpret rules to cover certain cases themselves, nothing within spellcasting rules or spells written at the time clearly states which parts are "flavor" that can be "ignored". The thread apparently predates the DMG, though, so h...

4:26 PM
@HotRPGQuestions with freaking magic. c'mon.

Am I missing something on this meta?

@ThomasMarkov i'd recommend no longer engaging.

The author seems very insistent that their question is different from the linked duplicate.

If enkryptor wants to get it reopend, they can work on that with someone_evil.

the question is different

4:29 PM
I mean, to me, their comment explaining how their question is different doesn't actually prove anything

oh sorry

"Two questions with duplicate answers" seems to me to be the same thing as "answer to question A can be found in question B"

Like, I'm not sure what the difference is between "Should question X be closed if its answer is found in Y answer to question Z" and "Should question X be closed if its answer is answer Y to question Z"
There's some difference, where one is more extreme, in that you don't have to go and find the answer; it's just there, in full
But that doesn't really change the guidelines/criteria at all, unless I'm missing something

@KorvinStarmast rpg.stackexchange.com/a/184455/44723 that is a great answer.

@Akixkisu for a question that didn't need to be asked :P

@Akixkisu Thank you. @NautArch True

helllllllllllooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

@Catofdoom2 \o greetings!

That's quite an enthusiastic hello.

Reminds me of the Cutie's greeting, if you have played It Takes Two.

i've just been slightly better in life as of late

4:42 PM
@Catofdoom2 Same. In an informal talk, Brandom used the "sexy murder poets" and "basically pleasant bureaucrats" distinction, which filled me with joy. Anything in particular that brought you joy?

4:56 PM
things just aren't terrible for once
@Akixkisu I just am in one of those weird break things between depression where you're brain properly works for a day or two

@NautArch That was my gut reaction, too.

i'm confused

@nitsua60 YOu said you had done playtest on Candlekeep, did you do the Book of the Raven (Chapter 3)?

@Catofdoom2 About something in particular?

i made a chatroom in the game site but it put it on here. is there a way to move it to the game chat @Someone_Evil

5:04 PM
@NautArch [rummaging]

@Catofdoom2 Rehost to arqade? Yes, IIRC you can get a user like me to do it :)

@Someone_Evil yes, please move it to arqade

Done :)

@Someone_Evil thank you so much

@NautArch Vistani! No, not that one. Read through it, but didn't play it.

5:06 PM
@nitsua60 Got a neighbor who wants to try playing and was thinking a short level 3 and that looked like a good option.

@NautArch It's nice in that one can logically sprinkle all sorts of magical goodies into it =)

@Someone_Evil one of my players got banned from D&D and another one left so we are again down to 6 players

Going down to 6 seems like a good thing in of itself, though I'm not sure where to start about the other stuff

@Catofdoom2 awesome.

What kind of ban, and I suppose what kind of leave?

5:18 PM
@Someone_Evil one of them was my sister and she was incredibly rude to my parents over and over so they said she couldn't go for the last 3 sessions. and one of them said he had some family stuff.

I dare say grounded is better than forcibly ejected from the group, which is kinda what I feared banned meant

@Someone_Evil i still need to justify them disappearing in the story

@Catofdoom2 Nah. You don't really.
The story won't mind.

@Catofdoom2 The party wakes up and heads downstairs for breakfast. The barkeeper hands them a note and says, "a couple of your friends left this for you and headed out early this morning". The note reads: "Took another job with the others. Maybe we'll see y'all around."

^^

5:29 PM
@Someone_Evil @NautArch but my sister was the only player left that knew what happened at the capital

Alterantively, "Steve the Paladin, Sheila the Rogue, and Gork the Barbarian have died of dysentery".

@ThomasMarkov noice

@Catofdoom2 If it happened at the capital, it will be all over the news.

@ThomasMarkov welllll... there's not much of a capitol left anymore

later that morning so bar keep, heard any news of the capital? "Wiped out. Gone. It was a whole big thing."

5:33 PM
Find some other way to convey the important information to the players. Telling campaign-critical info to only 1 player and assuming they will tell the others is a rookie mistake.

@MikeQ i didn't but the other 2 players also left

@RevanantBacon The fabled Elven Stand Mixer.
By Sharper Mirror Image

@MikeQ @ThomasMarkov @Someone_Evil @NautArch i don't like my players leaving but I can't get mad about it people have other things in life

@Catofdoom2 My groups have generally been either all or none for sessions, but the pandemic changed that and I started running very open games for folks to come in and out of as they could.
It loosened me up a lot.

i need to horror that people have family and wanting to do other things

GcL
5:49 PM
@NautArch I run all or none for the main campaign and then I've got a backlog of one-shots from Humble Bundles for times when one or two aren't available.

@GcL Do you have any humble bundle one-shot recs for 3rd level.

@NautArch Have you done wild sheep chase?

GcL
@NautArch I ran Cat & Mouse by Kobold Press for a pair of L3 characters. It's a 1st level adventure for 4-6 L1 characters. Went pretty well for two L3.
I usually have to modify them for running for a smaller group.
Into the Deep Dark by Alex Kammer was fun as well. Had some memorable moments for the players.

@NautArch There's "Frozen Sick" on DNDBeyond, but it takes place in Wildemount, so you're not allowed to play it.

@ThomasMarkov I am not.
Although I am considering doing a play on LOST as the new player really likes that show

5:59 PM
@NautArch My favorite show is That 70s Show, so if you could work that into our game, that would be great.

@ThomasMarkov we already virtually do :P
see scenes around the table on 70s.

Oh right. wheeeeeez

sooooo
chould timail kill a terra?

Tiamat vs. Tarrasque?

@NautArch The Alexandrian has a bunch of Twitter threads on Candle Keep adventures.

6:06 PM
@AncientSwordRage er...can you search a twitter feed?

The Tarrasque would die to Tiamat's breath weapons very quickly. The blue head weapon is a DC 27 dex save for 16d10 lightning damage. The tarrasque has +0 to dex saves.

Tarrasque vs the dragon god

Tiamat can fly.
Tiamat would eat Tarrasque for lunch.

@ThomasMarkov which edition gave tarrasque anti-flying powers?

6:09 PM
@AncientSwordRage ha, found it meself.
Dang, he's tearing apart this adventure, but saying things I noticed on my read.

@AncientSwordRage Idk

that thing vs a tarra

@NautArch it's a small part of what convinced me not to buy it

But that sheep adventure is looking fun.

@NautArch Ive done it before, it's lots of fun

6:11 PM
so could a tarrasque beat tiamat ?

No, Tiamat would win easily.

And tiamat is immune to the tarrasque's melee attacks and fear effects.

Yeah, it wouldnt even be close.

okay, would tarrasques attack count as a magical weapon? only because there blood is used to make magic items?

@Catofdoom2 No, the tarrasques melee attacks are nonmagical.

6:13 PM
No, unless a stat block explicitly says that a creature's weapon attacks are magical, then they are assumed to be non-magical.

@ThomasMarkov how many hours did it take?

For example, Tiamat's attacks are magical because she has this ability:
> Magic Weapons. Tiamat’s weapon attacks are magical.

tarra is used to make magicical items so what makes it non-magical?
ok
fine

Where are you getting that the Tarrasque is used to make magic items?

Metal is used to make magic swords. Does that mean all metal is magical? No.

GcL
6:14 PM
@Catofdoom2 Steel is used to make magic items, thus all steel weapons count as magical.

The Dungeon Master's Guide is used to make magic items, therefore the Dungeon Master's Guide is magical.
2

@MikeQ okay there we go, you gave me a reasoning,thank you
@ThomasMarkov the duengon masters guide is acually a magical item in the game

@Catofdoom2 But the real reasoning is that the stat block doesn't 'say that they are magical.

@Catofdoom2 It is?

@NautArch okay, i'll take that reasoning

GcL
6:16 PM
What does it do? Gives secret advice about designing dungeons to keep out those pesky adventurers? or secrets to entertain them with the dungeon designed so as to keep them away from your real operation... which is a warehouse of knockoff watches?

Two tarrasques could not harm each other, since they're immune to nonmagical damage, and they have no magical attacks. But two Tiamats could hurt each other with their magical melee attacks.

@GcL For $10, you can attend my TED Talk on how to haggle with fake watch salesmen to always get a watch for $10 or less. Attendees get a goodie bag containing an authentic fake watch.

@GcL it tells of every single possible outcome using numbers and statics, tells of magic items that have never been discovered, and it's the only text to ever describe the godly species that is referred to as a "DM" in the text

@Catofdoom2 But is it actually in the game?

@GcL so would you count an opniptent book as magic?

GcL
6:20 PM
@MikeQ I recall having conversations like that while milling around the playground at recess. Also such heady topics as "If there are C hags, are there also B and D hags?"

Conveniently, Tiamat is immune to her own breath weapons

@ThomasMarkov This guy?
probably at their tables, yes.

how many elder dragons does it take to kill a tarra?

GcL
@Catofdoom2 Three.

I bet one ancient blue dragon could take on a tarrasque.

6:22 PM
@GcL @ThomasMarkov using the power of the book you can make the book and thus the book is a paradox of impossible to exist unless one exists but it exists and thus one has to exist

You asked this yesterday, right? It depends on the color. Can't be red, gold, or green, since tarrasque is immune to fire and poison. Otherwise 1, since the dragon could fly at a distance, and gradually cause damage using breath weapons.

but the tarra can control weather and thus could make a gust of wind to catch him @MikeQ

@ThomasMarkov that's a big lunch (super size me becomes Tarrasque Size me!)

it tells of every single possible outcome using numbers and statics, tells of magic items that have never been discovered, and it's the only text to ever describe the godly species that is referred to as a "DM" in the text. using the power of the book you can make the book and thus the book is a paradox of impossible to exist unless one exists but it exists and thus one has to exist

@Catofdoom2 You will appreciate this article

6:25 PM
@ThomasMarkov I wish to subscribe to your newsletter ...

@Catofdoom2 The Tarrasque cannot control the weather.
Unless you, as the DM, decide it can control the weather.

@ThomasMarkov but my mentor said it does. they said they have complete control over their planet. was he lying??

But with an intelligence of 3, likely wont be a great meteorologist.

@Catofdoom2 ...yes?

6:27 PM
But the tarrasque has also changed quite a bit over editions.

@Catofdoom2 Im sure "lying" is probably not the right word, but Im not aware of any lore that resembles anything like that.

So they may not now, but just like with everything else in life: remember to trust, but verify.

@ThomasMarkov is it possible that any previous editions or something similar to a tarra can do that?

Q: Why is the Tarrasque the most dreaded creature?

SolanaceaThe dnd5e Tarrasque does not look that dreadful to me. It seems very vulnerable to airborne attacks. In a world where fly is a third level spell, hippogriffs (among other flying creatures) can be ridden and longbows have a range of 150/600, it would seem that a relatively small force of flying lo...

The 5e Tarrasque is a stupid titanic beast that does nothing but destroy things.

6:28 PM
yep, turned out not too be too difficult to kill. Can't remember what level we were, but we handled it pretty well.
Until the end, whent he light cleric was swallowed and stuck in the dead tarrasque.

@NautArch thats the worset part of 5e. they're supposed to be a walking diaster, not something to fight but something to run from, they're supposed to be unbeatuble

We had to find him and get him out before he died, thankfully my aura of life kept him alive.

GcL
@ThomasMarkov That was pretty much it's purpose in the 2e as well.

@Catofdoom2 I don't think that's true, either.

GcL
@Catofdoom2 Your player's characters have a lot of ancient dragons to call on?

6:31 PM
@GcL they're oppesed with trying to get a dragon pet

The tarrasque isn't meant to be unbeatable, at least not for appropriately leveled D&D player characters. It's for godzilla scenarios, so it's meant to be unstoppable to soldiers and civilians who fight back when it tries to destroy their towns.

@Catofdoom2 Dragons are intelligent creatures who probably wouldn't take too kindly to being a "pet"

GcL
Obsessed? Well, when they get it... they just have to wait a couple millennia and they'll have an ancient dragon buddy. Just keep fingers crossed that anything you need one to defeat for you doesn't show up in the intervening time. That might actually cause the characters to go on an adventure.

@ThomasMarkov exactly

they're going to have learn to go about it the other way around
you don't adopt a dragon as a pet, you get a dragon to adopt you as a pet
3

6:33 PM
@Yuuki exactly
if they want it to be a "pet" they'll have to hatch it themselves and raise it
but at that point its more of an adopted child
would that even count? @Yuuki @GcL @ThomasMarkov
i assume they'd work like all other living were they are loyal to whatever/whomever raised them

GcL
If the dragon declares the character as their pet? Yes. It counts. Do not meddle in the affairs of dragons, because you a crunchy and go well with ketchup.

@gcl but if you raise it it'll be loyal

GcL
Loyally declaring the character as it's pet.
Now the pet has become the master.

not really a "pet" but it'll be a loyal companion and friend

@Catofdoom2 /r/raisedbynarcissists would strongly disagree

6:38 PM
22
Q: Origins of quote: "Do not meddle in the affairs of dragons for you are crunchy and taste good with ketchup."

Andrew BickertonI've grown up loving the quote "Do not meddle in the affairs of dragons for you are crunchy and taste good with ketchup." and I've been searching around to find out where it came from (with only a small amount of luck). I discovered that it came from Suzanne McMinn, however, I have no references...

@Yuuki well people need to care for what they're raising to work. people who are toxic and mean to their children have an illness and is harder to be loyal to

I would also like to point out that the Tarrasque has a +9 Wisdom save, and Tiamat has a DC 26 frightful presence. Meanwhile, Tiamat has a +17 Wis save and the Tarrasques' frightful presence is DC 17.

dragons also take quite some time to grow, i can't imagine that any adventuring party that manages to acquire a dragon egg and hatch it will live long enough for it to be of any benefit in a combat sense

GcL
I wouldn't expect a lot of characters to know much about raising a dragon well. Probably end up with a brat. Then it's just putting out fires all over the place for the next 400 years until it's on it's own.

@RevanantBacon But both are immune to being frightened.

6:41 PM
you might be better off just polymorphing a party member into a dragon

@Catofdoom2 i mean, my parents raised me and i don't have specific loyalty to them

GcL
or adopting a puppy... maybe a meandering stray dog.... possibly an elderly pooch to "guard the cart"

if they raised me to be a weapon for them, i would be strongly inclined to give them the finger and leave them asap

GcL
@doppelgreener Which finger? Like.. your most valuable one? or just one that was laying about the place from the last set of fools to try to pirate your hoard.

@doppelgreener Maybe, but what if the only reason you maintain that attitude now is because they raised you that way?

GcL
6:43 PM
Also, I assume your hoard in this case is a large collection of books.

the middle one, raised in isolation

@MikeQ shhhhhhhh

GcL
@doppelgreener That's what you get. Bad parents and now you're raising your own fingers in isolation. Cruelty begets cruelty. /S

@GcL well of course you're raising them in isolation, you don't want your fingers to catch covid, after all

@Catofdoom2 Just a gentle reminder not to share links to pirate copies of material

GcL
6:46 PM
@Yuuki Not in this day and age! The piggies that went to market are already in trouble and we should learn from their plight.

7:01 PM
@Someone_Evil That meta rewrite looks solid. Voted to reopen.

@NautArch Ive written my answer already lol

@Someone_Evil what do you mean?
was that site illegel? because it was sent to me through this chat and I saved and then posted it again here
is anybody still here?
@ThomasMarkov are you here?

7:19 PM
YUp

yaaaayy!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
\
is anybody else here? i can't tell, I'm basically blind and can't make out a difference between the colors

Oh, I suppose I missed it the first time. That specific material is not part of the ogl (that's the relevant 5e licence, no?)

@Someone_Evil i'm confused, did i do somthing wrong?

It might take a moment before folks reply. Most would be doing something else at the same time and have chat in the background, or we're using a moment to compose our words. Don't worry if there's no immediate response
@Catofdoom2 Eh, you've been asked not to do something and we'll just treat this as a learning opportunity and then it's all fine :)

okay

GcL
7:28 PM
This chat isn't as inane as most of the meetings that should have been an email, so yeah... it's in the background all the time.

@Someone_Evil @ThomasMarkov @GcL what do i do this summer?

About what?

GcL
Read one book a week. Go running or hiking outside every other day. Fly a kite at least twice.

@ThomasMarkov I have literally nothing to do all summer. what should i do to kill time

Get a job
I worked at a putt putt golf course every summer in high school

7:31 PM
nah-nah why don't you get a job~

@GcL i'll work on the books, i'll hike when possible, i don't own a kite

GcL
yet

@ThomasMarkov i'll actually be 14 at the begining of the summer so that might work

Kites are cheap, you'll be able to get on in no time with a part time job
Oh RIP
no job then

I started my first job on my 14th birthday.
@RevanantBacon Depends on the state.
You can start working at 14 in North Carolina.

7:33 PM
@ThomasMarkov repressing "something something dinosaurs" joke
:p

ok, ill start my resume, i'm a complete loser who's never had a job
good?

Pro tip: most people that are 14 have never had a job before

@Catofdoom2 Well youre 13, so your lack of experience is not going to be unique.

Hell, most people that are 18 haven't had a job before
I didn't start working full time until I was almost 20

@RevanantBacon thats sad
@RevanantBacon i really need to make money

7:35 PM
Well, prior to that I was working part time for my dad who's a contractor.
Also, why is that sad? And sad like how?

My first pay check was $108, and I felt like I had a bazillion dollars that day.

@RevanantBacon so you've worked before
@ThomasMarkov what was your job?

GcL
Modern day feudalism. Swap out "liege" with "company" and "military protection" for "healthcare".

13? Perfect age to get unhealthily obsessed with the Stack Exchange system for the next half a decade.

@Catofdoom2 Yes, but not a lot. Working for may dad wasn't regular, and I hate the type of work he does so I avoided it as much as possible
Then I joined the Army

7:37 PM
@Catofdoom2 Bottom of the totem pole at the putt putt course.

@ThomasMarkov Ball Polisher

@RevanantBacon Yeah, did some of that.

;D
Sorry, I'm finding this way funnier than I should
Trying very hard not to crack up in the middle of the office

People would hit their balls into the pond, and I had to put on waders and collect them with a net, then clean the algae off of them.

@ThomasMarkov where did you even live?

7:40 PM
I grew up at the beach

@Catofdoom2 Once again suppressing "something something dinosaurs" joke
But in all seriousness, you could totally work at like an ice-cream place slinging soft-serve
Or like there's a lot of summer camps that look for 13-16 year-olds to herd the 5-9 year olds
Like when I was 17 and 18 I worked at a Boy Scouts camp for those summers

@RevanantBacon Oh, the nostalgia! 200 rising 3rd graders descending upon the golf course I had just spent 4 hours cleaning.

4 hours you'll never get back

if i work 4 to 5 jours with my cities minium wage I'll make almost 100 dollars

I worked 20 hours for my $108

7:46 PM
4-5 hours daily for a week
do i have to pay taxes if so do i have to pay on anything besides income?

Probably depends on your local ordinances.

i hope not
because with income tax thats already most of my money

@Catofdoom2 You will fill out an I-9 form before you start work and there will be some withholdings from your check, but most of it will be refunded when you file your taxes next year.

omg i just realized all the investments i made while i was little will make thousands

You will likely not make enough to owe any income taxes, but a small percentage will be taken out for social security and medicare.

7:50 PM
my grandma did a bank not investments so i'll make thousands at that age of 20
then my mom said I can get $1600 at the age of 16. so if invest that $1600 i'll make made money
i'll make (quick maths) a little of 20k
is that good?

@ThomasMarkov my first paying job was sweepoing floors in an apartment complex, age 12. Then I moved up to wandering the neighborhood and cutting grass sometimes when I found someone who wanted me, rather than themselves, to do that. At age 15, I was working as a shelf stocker in a grocery store(actually a military comissary) ... was unloading beer and soda trucks at 16, and delivery trucks to the store where I worked after school. Working part time after school most of junior and senior year.

Making money is neither good or bad. It is what you decide to spend it on that is good or bad.

i suspect cat is not asking about the ethical dimension
20k is quite a lot!
i don't think you can turn $1600 into $20,000 in the space of four years in our current environment, so i'm assuming there must be some other figures not mentioned yet

about 3k from my grandma due to an old investment from when i was an infant
my name is signed on them so they're gurtened

@doppelgreener High risk there might be, but also a risk of losing it all. Not what I'd do at age 16

7:58 PM
@doppelgreener You can, but it requires risky gambling.

Then of course there's Vegas. 😁

sorry
