@KorvinStarmast saw your messages.
The way that paranoia is meant to work is it's a "reaction to the scary thing", so their focus for a round is to "avoid the scary thing". I've added an addition that is only takes your action, not your whole turn.
Secondly the Obsession/compulsion is basically like a fidget cube. Some people need it as a coping mechanism, so if you drop it, then you want to get it back. Again, this is not meant to incapacitate you, just preoccupy you
In addition, the frequency of these coming up is fairly rare. Players can find ways to avoid dropping the thing, or like the "rule of cool", perhaps develop coping mechanisms to deal with phobia?

@BardicWizard that's real life. Also looks like a few things that we had in the Navy ... any heirarchical institution that to a certain extent relies on its reputation will have guidance and rules along those lines ...
... so that scape goats may be sacrificed at the appropriate time. It's a timeless human tradition.

Q: Does Hold Person cast on a Spider Climbing NPC affect their ability stay on a vertical surface?

RhinoTXAn NPC spell caster that is using spider climb at the top of a 30' pillar where it meets the ceiling is magically held by hold person. I have two related questions: When Hold Person goes into effect, does the NPC fall, or does the Spider Climb magic (which is still in effect) keep his hands and ...

Q: My gaming group can't agree on play-by-post or scheduled games

Stop Being EvilI'm currently helping out as one of the DMs of a larger gaming group that will periodically see two or three players plus a DM go on a mission, usually handled in play-by-post format. Right now, I have a group of three that's been having pacing problems from the start despite multiple strategies ...

It's been a few months since anybody re-upped this, I think:
Anyone can ask for a conversation to be moved to the Not A Bar (or other chat room) at any time and a room owner or rpg.se mod will re-locate it as swiftly as possible. This does not reflect poorly on the topic, the conversers, or the asker; sometimes there's just a need for conversations to be opt-in rather than opt-out. Every RO and rpg.se mod has agreed to support this, and we'll never ask for justification.

Good morning everyone, I've been researching pearls this morning (since the Salt Marsh Campaign is maritime, and one of the kinds of gems is pearls now and again) and am somewhat overwhelmed by the nuances of the pearl industry. (Bought my wife some Mikimoto pearls in Japan about 30 years ago, but she prefers the Mallorca pearls I got her five years later. I guess shell pass the Mikomoto's down to our grand daughter some day ...)
Pearls figure in the identify spell as a material component, still, but PCs no longer need to eat a goldfish.
Fun fact that I enjoyed: the biggest natural pearl ever found was from the Philippines and weighed 75 pounds. (Pretty sure that's not going to be on a necklace any time soon unless you are a storm giant ...)

@KorvinStarmast Seems appropriate for a strong centaur.

@ThomasMarkov was it posted by a bot or something?

@RevenantBacon Seems like it.

Also related fun fact: the Pearly Gates are not actually made out of pearls! Due to manufacturing constraints at the time of construction, and especially the total lack of any pearl industry, they had to settle for an imitation material.

@doppelgreener Manufacturing constraints? What was there to manufacture? Each gate was made out of 1 pearl.

12:44 PM
@ThomasMarkov That's what the tourism brochures claim, but these things are always more complex than they let on.

@doppelgreener nacre, most likely, such that we may speculate that "pearly" means "kind of like pearls" (mother of pearl was used IIRC waaay back when, but I'd need to look that up)
Reminds me of an old Frank Zappa lyric "Is that a real poncho, or a Sears poncho?"
Not sure why this thought is in my brain, but I have a vague notion of various Egyptian antiques being made from mother-of-pearl ... (nacre)

@doppelgreener There are some pretty wild interpretations of the book of Revelation out there.
Is the link in this question a legitimate link or a pirate link?

Pretty sure they are (virtually) official for PF

@Someone_Evil See here, seems legit.

From this meta: "Paizo has taken down their own PRD and officially licensed the Archives of Nethys page as their reference document."

12:55 PM
This website is too well made to be a pirate site :P
@Someone_Evil Maybe you know this since becoming a moderator enlightens you to special knowledge: why is my reputation shown on this page less than my total reputation even though I have only gained reputation this year?
@Rubiksmoose I beat your single quarter reputation record by only 47 rep

@ThomasMarkov I would assume because it doesn't count a.soc bonus and the base one, so it shows as 101 less than you total

How about that.
@NautArch How's Rime going?

You get the feeling that Someone_Evil is someone evil, but you're not sure about Rubiksmoose, they are something of a puzzle.
@Rubiksmoose Were you solved before or after you had antlers? Did you grow them or attach them?

@ThomasMarkov Isn't that quite a personal question?

@ThomasMarkov I'll have to observe you change states a couple more times before I can make an informed prediction. Care to visit Monte Carlo?

1:15 PM
@ThomasMarkov You haven't seen the state of my stickers. It seems that a couple got switched at the factory and I can't be solved XD

I heard that Rubiksmoose was once a human, and fell victim to a true polymorph gone wrong. At the moment of casting, the archwizard couldnt decide between object or beast and got his wires crossed.

@ThomasMarkov True Polyhedron?

Hello!

@eimyr I once tried to visit Monte Carlo but it's such a small country I changed states randomly trying to stop there

@ThomasMarkov He had to cast True Rubymorph since Polly was on vacation; but they hadn't gone final on the features, so the result is what we see

@BardicWizard Im basically a cleric IRL, so Ive got to go with lawful good.

Meanwhile, in other news: You are in a contest. Before you is a series of doors. Behind one of the doors is the main prize --- a brand-new sports car. Behind each other door is a consolation price, that being a goat. Monty Hall administers the contest so that you get to pick any door, and Monty, regardless of your pick, open all doors except two: the one you picked in any case and the door concealing the car if you picked a goat door, a random goat door otherwise. You know this much.

Since we've got @Rubiksmoose and @Someone_Evil here, we never had a 2020 community review thread like in 2019
I suspect this is because the regularly shcedule programming was put off because of the moderator election.

@ThomasMarkov I have done a bunch of those easy aignment surveys over the years and it always returns "neutral good" for me so I stopped taking them.
@ThomasMarkov Or it's because we fixed everything and it's all good.
suppressed guffaw

@ThomasMarkov Nice. I personally don’t like the alignment mechanics but 1, we’re not starting that debate at what’s 6am for me, and 2, I personally would call my alignment Tomato Neutron which abbreviates to TN, though my best friend calls me “somewhere between lawful and neutral good”
@kviiri hah

1:24 PM
My alignment is awful food (please don't eat me)

@BardicWizard It's okay, since 99% of the time in D&D 5e alignment isnt a mechanic.

@kviiri Neutral Bland

We ran into a giant shark once during an adventure whose alignment was "true hungry" ...

@eimyr strictly no flavor picks I see

@ThomasMarkov We're aware. Though obviously that didn't translate into one happening (yet)

1:26 PM
@kviiri The only flavoured item at my table is cheese.

@KorvinStarmast I listed the alignment of my (mentioned before) sorcerer as “True Paranoid”

@Someone_Evil Waiting for something juicy to pop up so we can say we're bad? :P
Do the moderators have a secret chat room for themselves?

@ThomasMarkov It's on our radar :)
@ThomasMarkov This year there is no such thing as "regular" ;-)

@Rubiksmoose Please double check the bearing line before releasing the missile, if you would please.

@Rubiksmoose I bet them antlers are actually radar antennae

@ThomasMarkov Also dandy marshmallow sticks!

@Rubiksmoose Don't want to hit any friendlies or neutrals

@ThomasMarkov Yup! Gotta have some place to talk about more sensitive info like PII and such.
@KorvinStarmast fiiiiiine. If you insist. resists pushing the red button

Sorry, Im just braindumping the question Ive had for the mods, ive got another one

Hit me with it lol I'm full of post vacation energy :)
I think that was the longest I've ever gone without logging into the site since I became active. (~4 days)

User gszavae suddenly stopped logging in August 2nd, would it be apropos to reach out to stackexchange to shoot them an email to see if everything is okay?

1:35 PM
@ThomasMarkov The things we can/should use PII for is strictly controlled. So, I don't think that would be appropriate and I don't recall a case where that has ever been done before to someone not a moderator.
And, FWIW if it helps to ease your mind, this isn't the first time that user has dropped off like this.

@ThomasMarkov Haven't actually started it yet. Just did a delivery encounter from the pre-encounters that were on Dndbeyond. Tomorrow starts off the actual adventure.
I may have them do other deliveries in the towns they visit...or not.

@NautArch What town are you starting in?

@ThomasMarkov Seconding Moose's observation that they're following an established pattern here, it's unlikely intervention is needed or wanted.

@ThomasMarkov Rolled for Bryn Shander

@BESW +1.

@KorvinStarmast @ThomasMarkov And folks come and go here all the time.

I made a small Lasers & Feelings hack based on Over the Garden Wall: anybody interested in giving some feedback?

@eimyr if we aren't familiar with either of those things, I'm guessing we wouldn't be helpful? :)

@NautArch I think familiarity with the show is more important than L&F, but yeah, if it's neither then the whole mood might be elusive to a reader. I am, however, happy to take feedback from anybody, as long as it's in good faith (but I don't have doubts about that here)

Q: Is this question about equipping ordinary soldiers with magical equipment opinion based?

Thomas MarkovIn lieu of a seemingly inevitable open-close tug of war, I'd like to put this one forward for discussion. Which magic item of very rare or lower rarity is most useful to protect a group of ordinary soldiers? Since its initial closure for being opinion based, it has not been significantly changed....

@KorvinStarmast - So... I've gone back to school.

@JohnP yay?
@JohnP Also, i'm on the final series for the riftwar stuff.
He clearly wanted to go back to the original characters from a hundred years earlier.

@NautArch Yay, just I'm too old for this :p
@NautArch Yeah, he tried to make it full circle. I still haven't read all of the last ones.

You're never too old to suffer in school!
@JohnP I'm down tot he last book and ahalf and i'll finish. BUt it does feel kinda silly at the end.

@NautArch I'm currently in community college for a C refresher and a security+ prep, and a start date of Nov 5 for a master of science in information security and assurance.

2:45 PM
@NautArch man!

@JohnP Is there a job that you've got in mind once you have the degrees? Are there good placement services?

Sorry I haven't been around much this summer, but between 4 furloughs, a layoff and rehire, and the boy's surgery it's been...difficult coping.

@JohnP is everything okay?

@NautArch Industrial security, either in securing the information systems or facility security. Possibly in a SOC.
@NautArch Yeah, it's just been a year. Which is probably about the same for everyone here :)

@KorvinStarmast Forthat spider climb question, i'm considering adding the additional info from OP, but doing so kinda invalidates your answer.
not sure what to do
@BLM Heh. I went back to school at 24. Much younger decision than what @JohnP is doing. But honestly, when ou go back, it's much more interesting (at least it was for me.)

2:54 PM
I think with some adjustments my question about edit wars might make a good FAQ candidate.
Any thoughts?

What adjustments do you think it needs?

If I see a Gold/Mod closes or opens a question unilaterally, I'll often not use my own ability to override and instead either try and discuss it in comments, chat, or meta.

@NautArch or too young to suffer

@BardicWizard I prefer to call that required suffering.

@NautArch bah humbug

3:06 PM
@Someone_Evil Maybe it doesn,t what do you think?

@NautArch Could not be more right, man.

@ThomasMarkov Seems fine to me really, feel free to add the faq-proposal tag

@nitsua60 hehe. You see the potentially good news up here? Indoor performance halls opening at 50% capacity up to 250 people.

@NautArch It is a separate question, and I suggested that he write that separate question also

@KorvinStarmast ah, yes. that's the much better solution!

3:12 PM
@NautArch I didn't notice that. Sounds good. I assume numbers in the state warrant such risky business? (he he he)

@NautArch And it's also a very good question. I had started to add something about that to my answer when I realized that I was scope creeping so I got rid of it.

@eimyr Hey-hey--been a while. How's life?

@NautArch yay! We unfortunately might be in position to have schools partially reopening in a couple of weeks around here
I hope stuff reopens for you

@nitsua60 Yeah, it's for the areas doing well (like our county). I'm still avoiding that stuff, but it's getting harder for me to stay as locked down with things going well (although I think part of things going well are folks like me who are still staying in mostly.)
@KorvinStarmast good call. Left a comment suggesting that :)
@BardicWizard our schools go hybrid next week. Going to be interesting.

@NautArch Good. We need to reduce our dependence on petroleum based learning :p

3:18 PM
@NautArch fun! </sarcasm> we would be heading to hybrid too if the numbers stay good another week. Schools like my private school would be the first back but students can opt to go full-virtual still

@Someone_Evil That looks like a great joke that I don't get at all. Need more coffee.
@JohnP Ohh, yay. My son passed his security+ exam recently and he's fishing for new positions ... job market's in a bit of flux as you are aware ... but he's not even thinking about MS. Go Go John! Nolij is gud. 👍
Reply to @nitsua60 on public assembly in our area: churches still only allowed the 25% cpacity (fire marshall provides the max occupancy based on their standards) and most restaurants around here are at half, or they are closed. Lots of bars are still closed.

@NautArch Yeah--I've seen some interesting research suggesting that policies (municipal/county/state) are lagging/reflecting people's behavior more than driving them.
@KorvinStarmast That's about where we are up here. (To the best of my knowledge. Like Naut, I'm living well-enough inside whatever strictures there are that I'm not actually that aware of their particulars or evolution.)
Then again, with three kids, thousands of acres of forest in my back yard, and a dislike of crowds... I was pretty CoViD-compliant well before!

^^

3:37 PM
@KorvinStarmast Is he tied to any specific area? Or is he open to relocate?

@nitsua60 heheheh, my brain thinks that Mohegan Sun casnio complex and (something fox, I forget the name, used to fly over it, foxwood?) might be on hard times during this COVID. Are they closed?
@JohnP That's a good question. Last I talked to him, he would rather stay in Texas, but I expect if the right position was the issue he might move. He recently renewed his lease in San Antonio, and it was with my prodding that I suggest he start looking "within" his current employer now that his certs are improved. His first few probes were not successful outside of current employer. He's waiting for a response on two possible "grow within" inquiries he's made ...
@JohnP Not sure what you've seen, but i get the idea that if you are moved into more demanding positions in a company, when the time does come to move on that upward growth at the old place will be a solid positive indicator ... however I've been out of the hiring piece for so many years I feel out of touch
@JohnP I just counted on my fingers. Last time I was on the three person panel to interview a prospective new hire was over six years ago. And the time before that was eight years ago.

3:55 PM
@KorvinStarmast It's... a little different now. It used to be new jobs every few years was a bad indicator, but any more, I don't know. I have not been on a hiring panel in nearly as long, but from what I gather, if it's a growth opportunity either in or out of company, take it.
Does he have his bachelors?

4:21 PM
@nitsua60 survivable, how are you?

@KorvinStarmast Also, if he is in a larger corporation, he can volunteer in certain positions. Such as I am a security ambassador, and I've gotten into the succession plan for a couple managers as well. Find a hiring manager that is willing to sit down and have a mock interview and/or just review his resume and suggest other steps. Plus, if he has a career profile on the HR page, make sure it reflects all current info.

@KorvinStarmast I think they're sorta-open, maybe? (Foxwoods was the correct name, btw.) But they're on the other end of the state--I'm only supposing that because I've seen billboards in the last month that seem current.

I think they're limited open - same with the one nearer to us.
But I don't gamble, so....

@eimyr Surviving. Could use a nap though. Aaaaand... a bell just rang! I get a 30 min break and can take my nap! Ask and ye shall receive!

4:36 PM
@nitsua60 lucky duck I have 14 more minutes of first period
... i should pay attention

I do feel a professional obligation to second that ^^.

4:52 PM
@BardicWizard Nah, it's nothing you won't hear again.
Sorry @nitsua60 someone's gotta play the bad side. :p

I've got a resource request for you guys.

@ThomasMarkov wuzzat?

I need a list of bar/inn/tavern interiors to add to my world
Everytime my players go to a bar, inn, or tavern, it's the same one no matter where they are.

@ThomasMarkov that alone could be fun :P
@ThomasMarkov Have you not been to many taverns/bars?

Ive been to so many bars.

hehe

5:18 PM
Thats what I needed. Ill just put real life bars into my games.

why not?
whatever adds ambiance

I dont know why I never thought of that.

you needed someone who hasn't had a drink in 15 years to tell you :P

I cant wait for my brother-in-law to say, "Wait, is this Ioanni's Bar and Grill?"

BLM
@NautArch people like that exist?😶

5:21 PM
@BLM I'd say probably most 15 year olds.

@BLM I noticed a correlation between drinking and my migraines so stopped.

@ThomasMarkov Matt Molloy's pub in Ireland is a must.

@JohnP where is that?

BLM
@ThomasMarkov hmm, I agree for the better 15 year olds ;)
@NautArch too bad, do you miss that?

@JohnP looked itup. Tht was further north than I had gone when I went.

5:24 PM
@NautArch Dublin I think. Molloy is the flutist for the Chieftans, and they have seisuns almost every night. The craic is supposed to be off the charts.

@BLM I do. I just started a new migraine treatment and I'm hoping it works and I can start again. My wife really enjoys wine and it'd be nice to have a glass with her.
@JohnP from where I saw, it's north of Galway on the Western side.

@NautArch Oh yeah, county... Mayo?

my buddy and I started in Dublin and then drove south around the coast stopping along the way until we hit galway and then went straight across back to dublin.

GcL
That's a lovely drive so long as you can avoid constantly hitting your bloody windshield wipers when you intend to signal you're turning left!

@GcL It was quite lovely! Well, lovelier after I got my accident out of the way when I first picked up the rental car. Smashed the drivers side mirror into a parked car mirror. Luckily both cars were rentals (i did it literally as soon as I pulled out as i tried to move over from an oncoming car.)
And the thing the guide books say that the Irish are super friendly and will stop and help if you're on the wide of the road...is a lie.

5:32 PM
@ThomasMarkov and me (and most other kids in my high school)

Well, at least it's a lie when it's 7pm, dark, and pouring rain in the wicklow mountains.

GcL
@BardicWizard I think the fantasy versions of taverns is probably better in that case. Actual taverns are so much more... tedious? The novelty of a bunch of drunk people in one place wears off pretty quickly. If you want a fun way of describing the taverns, you could describe them in terms the characters might pick up on.
I go with physical space size and density of seating: tight, cozy, claustrophobic, expansive, etc. Then how the clientelle is dressed: working class, kind of smudges on their clothes, merchants accoutrements, refined, pompous, etc. Finally, the floor: clean, immaculate, dirty, literal dirt, dusty, sticky, bloody, etc.
So you can usually get the "feel" for a place very quickly. E.g. "The Queenie Eagle is a small cozy place where the people are in overalls that smell of sawdust. The floor is swept, but with a few oily spots here and there."

5:52 PM
@GcL "the novelty of a bunch of drunk people in one place wears off pretty quickly" is an excellent summary of my college experience =)
4
(Though I think my dept chair would prefer it if I'd said "'Maxwell's Equations' is an excellent summary of my college experience.")

GcL
Maxwell's demon would be though. Some intellect flipping a gate to try to get students with more potential on one side than the other. Hoping to drive the engine of society?
The analogy breaks down rather quickly... and when life gives you a broken analogy, make political ideology pun golem out of it!

6:32 PM
@JohnP yes, he does, and he's gotten a couple of certs since then.
@ThomasMarkov Win. That's a fun thing to do (more or less have that as a little easter egg ...)
@GcL I'd make an omelette with that broken analegy.

7:20 PM
Does electrum have any mechanical special properties in 5e?

I think it conducts electrumcity really well ;-)

@Rubiksmoose hey-o!

What kind of mechanical benefits are you looking for? Weight and stuff?

It doesn't even have a Trade Goods listing

@Rubiksmoose I'm mostly trying to understand this question
and what they could even do with it

7:26 PM
@NautArch No, I just read every reference to it on DDB.

@NautArch ah gotcha

@ThomasMarkov most of which are duplicates of the Currency or Abbreviations sections

yeah that.

IT seems like it's more fluff than anything for me. Like if someone wanted to have an Electrum "X", then yeah, that's fine. Fluff your X as electrum.

Though note that DDB truncates results to 35, though there's unlikely to be any relevant additions
@NautArch The only metal with special properties is silver, no? Outside the two magic item metals

7:29 PM
@Someone_Evil adamantine?

@NautArch That and mithral would be the magic item metals

Unobtanium grants +1 to CHA.</headcanon>
@Someone_Evil Gold, silver, brass, bronze, and copper all have the property that you can make dragons out of them.
Platinum, too, if you're really aiming high.

@nitsua60 How much copper do you need for a dragon? I'd like two, please

@Someone_Evil More.
Whatever you have on hand, "more" is how much a dragon needs.

@NautArch not really, no, beyond being worth 5x silver and .5 x gold.

7:41 PM
@KorvinStarmast that's what it seems like. /shrug.

@NautArch IIRC, OD&D didn't have electrum, but in AD&D 1e we began to see that leak into the game as yet another option for coins and another poke at verisimilitude
Yep, there it is, p 35 PHB AD&D 1e.

@KorvinStarmast but that's just currency or was it something tom ake stuff out of?

@nitsua60 I think I once mapped out an electrum dragon, whose mom was a gold dragon and whose dad was a silver dragon, AD&D days. No idea where that is, if it still exitsts in my old files.
@NautArch The Egyptians used it to cover pyarmid tops, in D&D it was "one more coin type" because EGG loved lists and tables. .😊
I can't recall anything made of electrum that was special for being made of electrum. Mostly, it was "too cheap to make it out of gold, so you make it out of electrum" or something like that.

@KorvinStarmast just the tips :P

The special metals were mithral and adamantite .... and still are
@NautArch True ...

7:47 PM
"electrum" sounds too cool not to have plus it has actual historical basis
It's October, why is there a fly in my room

@kviiri the dead bodies?

@NautArch No I made sure none of them brought anything in

@kviiri Because it's too cold outside for them?

@Someone_Evil That might be it xD

@kviiri the dog just laid a fresh pile and the fly is hungry?

7:53 PM
The dog is actually hopefully laying a lot fresher... or contrariwise? piles soon
She had issues with her butt

8:21 PM
@Someone_Evil What are you talking about? It's 95f out.

8:40 PM
@JohnP that’s nice and about the same compared to here. Smoke’s everywhere too...

@BardicWizard Cali?

Hey, question for the room: Did anyone remember to wake up Green Day today?

GcL
@JohnP yerold

@GcL well...yeh.

10:09 PM
@JohnP yeah

@BardicWizard Sorry man. :(

10:43 PM
@JohnP it’s not that bad in my area but I have a teacher who said downtown it’s so bad people aren’t going anywhere
not even with masks
@JohnP what?

Isn't the first Monday of May the day for making effigies of the Green Man?
