@BESW but my opinion is important! Pretend pouty face
Yeah I can see that
Your example of walkies with grim has given me a clearer idea of what I need to define for my RPG system.

One of the problems with platforms like Steam is that they tend to not only confuse review with critique, they also tend to assume the same community systems are equally good for the solo indie amateur and the billion-dollar franchise studio.
@AncientSwordRage yeah, I learned from other parts of my life that "what effect do I want this to have?" is one of the best questions I can ask myself. Walkies is an experiment in looking outward from the table into the community, but most games (and homebrew!) benefit from asking some version of "what do I want the group to be like when this game is played?"

@BESW mhhmhhhm.
I have work to do on that.

@BESW speaking of walkies with grim, I almost started playing it today when my friend and I were walking down by the river, bc I saw a very good Old Place for grim. I didn’t actually play it though because my friend was talking about stuff and I wanted to listen
It is very easy to start thinking about it even just randomly

12:49 AM
@BESW also, I'm pretty sure I've come across that line of reasoning, you even said it last time we spoke about this. But when you gave a concrete example, all the gears in my brain lined up at once.

@AncientSwordRage For a more narrow example, I first started applying this to TRPGs at the homebrew level. For every change or addition to the rules and mechanics, I kept focused on "what change at the table am I trying to make?"
So, I saw that in 4e, mind control powers were making things less fun because it took away peoples' turns. If a PC got mind controlled, they could just tune out the fight.
Therefore I changed mind control so that it let the controller use their actions to force the PC to take a similar action that didn't use up resources. Spend a move action to make the PC take a move action, spend a standard action to make the PC attack, etc.
The PC still got their own turn to do what they wanted, but the controller got to jerk the PC around also.
This added interest rather than taking interest away.
Players whose PCs were mind controlled now had to pay more attention rather than less, because for example the charge-specialized fighter didn't want to be in charge range of his friends when the enemy's turn came around.

That's a clever workaround. Did you also apply it when PCs try to mind-control NPCs?

No, because that wasn't a solution to the problem I was trying to solve.
The problem was happening at the table level, not the fiction level: players were disengaging from combat when their PCs got mind controlled. The GM wasn't having that problem, so modifying NPC-targeted mind control wasn't necessary.
This was a major insight for me at the time: you don't have to change things just because it'd be symmetrical or "logical" or "fair." You make decisions based on the reality of the situation.

Good Monday Morning

@Ben hullo Ben, and g'Day
@MikeQ Aha, you must have met my faculty advisor on my first monograph. ;)
@MikeQ OK now I have to fold that into Salt Marsh world ...

Ben
Had the flu last week, which wasn't fun - both in the experience and dealing with everyone's fear that it might be COVID, so the COVID test was also not a pleasant experience

@Ben Glad it was just the flu. ;)
@Ben I have spent all day acting as bartender and chef to my wife and her best friend. We are five drinks in and they are flailing about in the back yard with three dogs. Two ours, one hers. They have provided me with comedic relief all day ...
... and this all started with "let's go to church together" ... which we did ... heh
a 9 AM

btw: FR question: are beavers a thing in the Forgotten Realms?

@Shalvenay yes, they are, but do you need stats for it?
@Shalvenay Oh, wait, you mean the animal? (i am so gonna get heat for that ...)
@Ben thankfully, I did not try to match them cocktail for cocktail, Or I'd not be able to find the shift key ....
@Ben The San Antonio Spurs won today, so we had on extra for them. We have had a couple of good Oz players on that team over the years ...
@Ben Aah, the old problem of lowest common denominator?
@Ben I am getting a little cranky on the lack of updates for Diablo IV ...

Ben
@KorvinStarmast Hay yeah... now that you mention it. That has gone dead hasn't it?

1:19 AM
@Ben It's still being developed, but of course I have become irrationally impatient ...
"By three they come..." can't last more than a year without a follow up ...
@Ben Snort it's so bad I have resorted to playing Warcraft III remastered ...

> Now I realise that technically speaking thats only one [factor], but I thought it was such a big one it was worth mentioning twice.
@KorvinStarmast I finished diablo I numerous times, I finished Diablo II exactly once. I bought but did not play Diablo III

@KorvinStarmast yeah, don't need a statblock either

@Shalvenay I don't see why not

@AncientSwordRage yeah, nor do I

Ben

1:26 AM
@Shalvenay I had a gnome character with a pet raccoon back in D&D 3.5e

@AncientSwordRage eheheh

@Shalvenay ?

@AncientSwordRage just a chuckle at the pet raccoon thing :)

Ben
@BESW Cheers :)

1:28 AM
@Shalvenay never really finished stating, so moving to 5e is tricky 🙃

What about miniature giant space beavers?

@MikeQ go for the eyes Boo, go for the eyes!

Q: Dream Experiences and experience gain

AOKostI'm about to run my D&D 3.P (Dungeons & Dragons 3.5 / Pathfinder) group through a "dream game" while they're on a journey between the Material Plane and the plane of Mechanus on the equivalent of a spelljammer. The material I could "easily" find on Dream is very limited... I have been able to fin...

Q: How does the interaction between Final Sacrifice and Nonlethal Spell work?

Anne AunymeFinal Sacrifice targets one minion, slays it and does damage to everyone close to it. Nonlethal Spell can make a spell nonlethal, which means it "knock[s] creatures unconscious instead of kill them". What would happen to my minion if I cast a nonlethal final sacrifice on it? Would it die or not?

Good evening! I just had sugar so I am in a very good mood! How is everyone around here?

Doing server cleanups and watching youtube :P

Grumbling but there's a new Marble League event to watch!

4:17 AM
My current lunchtime routine is: watch Altered Carbon while eating (10-15 minutes... it takes a few days to watch an episode), then play video games (Fallout 3 at the moment).

Ben
@Adeptus I'm trapped in DS3. I've got FF7 Remake, Diablo 3, Sekiro, Bloodborne, as well as requests of Nioh 2 and Hollow Knight
That said, I am proud of my latest Character - "Emperor Pengwyn".
Most notable features are a big chestplate with thick fur collar, and a helmet that actually looks like a penguin beak

4:49 AM
@BESW yes! I was lucky enough to be able to watch it when it premiered today!

@Ash forgive my ignorance, I don’t pay attention to pretty much anything except RPGs and Star Trek and some textile art stuff these days, but what’s marble league?

user15026
@BardicWizard oh gosh. It's fancy marble run stuff commentated like a sport and this is like it's Olympics, it's all done by this Dutch guy and some people he knows

It's so chill and good

Q: Can monsters use weapons they took from player characters via Disarm?

NewbieDMWithout necessarily getting into whether or not Disarm is a waste of time or not, if a monster Disarms a PC, (page 271, DMG) can that monster use the weapon if it picks it up? Example... A Bandit Captain uses its first Melee Weapon Attack to Disarm a PC of their magic sword... then a free action...

@AncientSwordRage Any new thoughts/questions/musings on your worldbuilding ideas?

@vicky_molokh-unsilenceMonica \oo//
pedipalps is easily in my top 10 favourite words
@vicky_molokh-unsilenceMonica oh no, that's a slow burner
behind wife/work/personal project/novel/esolang
if priorities shift, I'll be bouncing ideas in here though
oh and a DnD comapign I've loosely been thinking about
so I was talking about two things last time this came up, which might be where the confusion came from?
Worldbuilding -> new RPG system
'fixing racial traits' -> spit balling ideas, but given a better route by @BESW
DnD Campaign -> not actually mentioned ideas here before
@vicky_molokh-unsilenceMonica happy to talk about any of the above

10:20 AM
@AncientSwordRage I think in this case my stance is more reactive than proactive. Analysing some of the thoughts and replying to ideas and questions was interesting, but I don't currently anything in mind to add based on statements I'd already read yesterday.

@vicky_molokh-unsilenceMonica you made some excellent analysis yesterday, which was much appreciated

hola @RedRiderX

Hey howdy

hows it going?

11:44 AM
I'm doing okay, I have a free day pretty much so I'm still just deciding what I'll do
Probably spend a bit of it prepping for my next session.
Also rpg-related: I lost my 5e She-ra insert character yesterday.
I might try it again someday, because I still think a Celestial Warlock with a Unicorn patron sounds pretty good.
Add in the Armor of Shadows and Pact of the Blade and you're most of the way to a Magical Girl Transformation.

@RedRiderX oh no
@RedRiderX sounds amazing

They were only Level 2 so you gotta be prepared for that, but it's a bummer.
There were a few things about that subclass that I think fit well. Searing Vengeance is a good fit for an anime style second wind:
> Searing Vengeance
Starting at 14th level, the radiant energy you channel allows you to resist death. When you have to make a death saving throw at the start of your turn, you can instead spring back to your feet with a burst of radiant energy. You regain hit points equal to half your hit point maximum, and then you stand up if you so choose. Each creature of your choice that is within 30 feet of you takes radiant damage equal to 2d8 + your Charisma modifier, and it is blinded until the end of the current turn.

12:27 PM
@Medix2 is there a reason Magic Stone should/would be affected by Spell Sniper?
@RedRiderX seems appropriate

12:43 PM
@AncientSwordRage Well the attacks made have a range. Also Distant Spell gives it a range
I thought it was similar to the others but I see that they also have actual regular ranges, so far less similar XD

@Medix2 I think the crux is that the attack must be part of the casting
Produce flames is weird in that it lets you choose when to attack: as part of casting or later on

@doppelgreener I thought @vicky_molokh-unsilenceMonica was the only arachnid around here

In an attempt to get my family more into D&D after my son's first foray with friends last year, I did a really rules-light version and we had a blast.

@NautArch that sounds great
who else, besides your son, played?

It's tough because that's what they want to play because of my son, but the rules and mechanics are really a lot. And any suggestion to try something else led to "no, i want D&D!"

@AncientSwordRage 8yo son, 6 yo daughter, and wife.
her first time

1:19 PM
@AncientSwordRage ^ The kind of long-row eye placement of Alucard (sometimes).

@vicky_molokh-unsilenceMonica clearly a sigh for sore eyes
sorry that causes sore eyes
@NautArch if they ever move off the D&D train, Mouse Guard is a good kids game

Though I must make a disclaimer: despite absolutely loving freeform shapeshifters (the likes of [PROTOTYPE] and T-1000), somehow Hellsing didn't hook me as a series.

Hellsing to me is just a good/bad film with hugh jackman

@AncientSwordRage I really would like to do more, but they just love the idea of it because that's what daddy plays.

@NautArch that's really sweet

1:28 PM
And I realized I can simplify on the fly pretty easily.
And making things simpler also allowed me to improvise monsters on the fly.

sounds like a win win

I plan on trying to take an old school scoobydoo episode and turn it into a short adventure
Keep the thematic elements, but try and come up with a new take on it.

@NautArch looking forward to how it goes
I thought the first Helsing movie was crazy, but there's a direct to dvd animated prequel thats even mader

Q: Can you target someone with a "that you can see" spell if you can only see a hand or a foot?

guestIf you just get a glimpse of someone turning a corner, maybe just a foot, can you cast a spell that says "that you can see"? A situation that came up for me was as follows. @HotRPGQuestions How much cover can more than 3/4th cover cover if more 3/4th cover can cover more?
suggested new title ^

4/4 cover!

3:06 PM
I prefer to fight in 5/8 cover

@Carcer 9/16th? 17/32nd ?

can't we just use decimal cover?

I’m just imagining a combat where the gm is counting time in the music fashion, and the time signature of the measure when you make the attack is the amount of cover the target has...

@BardicWizard Is there an elemental plane of music? Music elementals?
I can see that being relevant
each elemental scales like modrons, but with time signatures not sides of polyhedra

And just when the players think it's over...coda!

3:11 PM
And if the GM plays music during this combat... call a creature scaly, in the sense that it sings/plays scales

I have 9/8 cover

@AncientSwordRage I’m going to homebrew one now

@BardicWizard excellent

Are there systems out there that don't track damage but just 'hits'?

@NautArch I can name some larp systems
they track hits by location
because otherwise you're mathing in real time

3:14 PM
Bards get bonuses on the Elemental plane of Music

@AncientSwordRage yeah, less larp and more tabletop
Just thinking that I kinda was doing that with the family and it was interesting.

@NautArch interesting
I forget how mouse guard worked, but that was simplified

Kind of like I had goblins. Those were just single-hit creatures for them. I had a couple of big bosses. and I kinda/sorta tracked HP more for him, but realized it might have been more funto come up with a system of hits rather than damage tracking.
but taht works more for martials than casters.
But I still had them roll damage dice and add them up. good math skills there.
When my daughter got sneak attack, she definitely enjoyed rolling more dice.

@AncientSwordRage no that just abstracts HP as 'dispostion'
@NautArch minions?

@AncientSwordRage basically
my daughter wanted to fight goblins, so goblins we fought!

3:19 PM
@NautArch huzzah!

ironically enough, weren't "hit points" original just "the number of hits you can take"?

then they wanted to fight the Jaguaro from scooby doo, so we did and Sawyer had a lego mini he wanted as a bad guy, so I through him as a fire-based caster.

I think it was subsequent material that introduced variable weapon damages

@Carcer interesting

3:56 PM
Prepping for the final big boss battle and realizing it's weird when monsters have different actions with different DCs.

4:36 PM
@NautArch do you mean the same action but different DC or different actions with the same DC?

@AncientSwordRage differenta ctions, different DCs. I kinda expected same DC for everything like players have.

@NautArch ahh is that a 5e thing?

@AncientSwordRage must be. I honestly haven't come across it before.
But I haven't built too many encounters for higher level PCs where they could fight these types maybe.

@NautArch like how DC is just base + ability + proficiency most of the time?

@AncientSwordRage yeah

4:40 PM
In 5e, if things are deriving from the same source (such as multiple features of the same class) then they tend to have the same DC calculation

i'm altering the creature anyway (demilich) because i'd like it to last longer than a round.

@MikeQ I like that
Is there a way to cheese the scouts Skirmisher ability? Something like forced movment on an opponent to move them towards you? Or compelled duel to force them to keep chasing you, while using a spell to force them away?
where's @ThomasMarkov when you need them

@AncientSwordRage It's tough to cheese with just one reaction.
but lightning lure would do it

@NautArch that was my (sad) conclusion
@NautArch yeah it's a good candidate

gets wonky if the enemy has more movement than you, tho

4:50 PM
It might just be enough to kite one BBEG
it needn't be a strong cheese
@NautArch thorn whip is similar

will take some planning to get in close enough range, but not too close so that you've got movement and the reaction movement to get you far enough away.
but lightning lure isn't a lot of damage and there's no sneak attack
maybe something like booming blade would be better
but then you've got an issue of range and triggering the OA

@NautArch Shapechange: Marilith

looking at new laptops and flip flopping between the XPS 13 and surface laptop 3

@NautArch can you SA from a spell mele attack?

@Someone_Evil darn that marilith!

4:55 PM
SA needs finesse or ranged weapon

Q: Can I sneak attack with Green-Flame Blade or Booming Blade?

Tiwaz TyrsfistMost spells can't be combined with sneak attack because 5e sneak attack specifies a finesse or ranged weapon attack. However, booming blade and green-flame blade require you to "…make a melee attack with a weapon against one creature within the spell's range…" If you're using a finesse weapon a...

@NautArch I could have sworn there was a way of casting a spell as part of an OA or reaction? Something like Tunnel fighter or sentinel, but neither quite work.
It's a shame that thorn whip isn't considered finesse...

@AncientSwordRage War Caster

@Someone_Evil ahh excellent
I still don't think it makes a complete pattern of cheese, but I feel like the piece are there
Also "You can move up to half your speed as a reaction when an enemy ends its turn within 5 feet of you." the enemy has to end their turn within 5 feet of you, so it can only be done at the end of their turn
You can use it to get past any number of other creatures without provoking AoO though

Command: Approach?
> The target moves toward you by the shortest and most direct route, ending its turn if it moves within 5 feet of you.

5:07 PM
@Someone_Evil that works better than compelled duel
> . When you cast this spell using a spell slot of 2nd level or higher, you can affect one additional creature for each slot level above 1st.
you could chain it up, as you get a reaction per turn? Or am I failing at DnD?
no, no I'm misremembering

It might be possible, but you get real squeezed for levels if you're to have Skirmish, shapechange, and command on the same character
@AncientSwordRage Why do you think it doesn't work?

@Someone_Evil reactions are per round, not turn
you can't go last in the initiative order, cast it on 3 mooks, and then move as each one ends it's turn near you
wait... why are we shape changing?

Marilith's reactive trait
> Reactive. The marilith can take one reaction on every turn in a combat.

@NautArch Whats the difference between those two laptops?
@Someone_Evil ahh ok

@AncientSwordRage not a whole lot.

5:21 PM
@NautArch I can see why picking between them is hard

From what I've read, the XPS can upgrade to a much better screen, but with 50% battery life.
While I'm at work, I use a second monitor, but at home, I generally don't. And I don't really travel much, so actual battery life isn't as important as screen.
The XPS is cheaper.

I can't help you there I'm afraid
at least that replaces needing to multi-class into scout
got to dash

@AncientSwordRage although a bit less movement, but not much less (5' mostly)

ciao for niao

@AncientSwordRage I’m on vacation :p

6:52 PM
@AncientSwordRage Cloud of Daggers is already really strong against all but Huge targets. Also, it's not clear what you mean by 2). Do you mean people take damage ending their turn in its area? Or that they take tame when it enters their tile like Flaming Sphere? Are you sure you don't just want a duration version of Sword Burst, Thunderclap, or Word of Radiance?
Considerations for spells that always do damage: They shouldn't be better than spells that can fail.

7:22 PM
@Axoren gotcha
If we're able to cheese our way round the battlefield with reactionary movement one way to take advantage is to bring an damaging aoe spell with us

But then you'd want that damage to apply on the beginning of an enemy's turn. Other options make it busted. For example, if it damages people while you move, you can zigzag for the soul purpose of hitting as many people as possible. Such an AoE would need to be much higher level lest a Rogue with Fast Movement would be unstoppable.
Like the Bag of Rats concept. There should be a Field of Mooks concept for balancing ideas.
If an AoE intended to hit adjacent targets can hit a whole Field of Mooks, then it's not intended to hit just adjacent targets.
Then, you need to consider what power level a spell intended to hit a whole Field of Mooks should cost.
Such as Fire Storm or Meteor Swarm, etc.

Does anyone know a full list of D&D5e necromancy spells? I have to plan a boss fight today...

@BardicWizard dndbeyond will give you that

D&D beyond lets you search by spell school: dndbeyond.com/spells/school/necromancy

That is wonderful, very wonderful (but I doubt the players will think so)

@Axoren what if it was just on them entering a space near you?

@AncientSwordRage Willing movement? Then it would function like Spike Growth
They take damage for each 5 ft. they spend walking near you.

9:10 PM
@Axoren I'm trying to find an existing spell

Spike Growth? Should be in PHB

Not a specific one, just one for something cheesy

Or do you mean you want an existing spell that functions like this?

@Axoren yes
@Axoren something to take advantage of this
5 hours ago, by AncientSwordRage
Is there a way to cheese the scouts Skirmisher ability? Something like forced movment on an opponent to move them towards you? Or compelled duel to force them to keep chasing you, while using a spell to force them away?

Grapple and Drag them?
It's an extra 15 ft. of movement for you, and you drag them 15 ft.
Actually, half of half of your speed.
You can run into the opposing backrow and drag their Mages over to your strikers.
With Expertise, you can do some pretty good work with Grapple.

9:18 PM
@Axoren that doesn't require the skirmisher ability though

I currently have a STR Rogue who does Grapple and Shove combat
The Skirmisher ability is great because they will always be within 5 ft. of you because you're grappling.
So every turn, you drag them.
Guaranteed

@Axoren interesting
How does it play out? Your turn: Grapple, There turn: struggle, reaction: drag ¼ move speed, your turn: profit?

Turn 1: Grapple. Drag.
Them 1: Reaction: Drag.
Turn 2: Shove. Drag.
On their turn, they spend an action trying to beat an Athletics contest where I average 19.
Either that, or they do something useful.
Spell Casters who only have Ranged cantrips attack me at disadvantage or then need to spend a spell resource to escape, attempt to mez me, or deal non-disadvantage damage.

@Axoren what does dragging achieve?
Ah ok

Separation of vulnerable enemies from their protectors. Forcing enemies to walk into hazards (like Wall of Fire and Cloud of Daggers). Saving some of your allied strikers' movement to get to the next target.
You are investing your movement and one of your attacks per turn (your only if you're a rogue, but it might be worth it) to tweak the layout of enemies on the battlefield
This is surprisingly VERY valuable in my recent experience.

9:32 PM
Troggy had a character like that in 4e, basically "I grab one enemy and drag them off to a corner to dispatch."

It won't feel like it, but there are times when I've shaved off entire turns of combat without doing a single attack.

But he had a feat that did something like STR mod damage per successful grab.

When we sat down and analyzed the battles after, we saw a big difference having a grappler.
I my contribution from grappling came in the form of everyone doing more damage to the same targets and less damage from the targets I grappled going to anyone else.

We also had a character whose every attack pushed enemies about eight squares, knocked them prone, and slowed them. Which was also super useful.

@BESW Reminds me of Bull Rush Trains in 3.5/PF

9:35 PM
Kinda, but with a hammer, and on every attack, and he was a fighter so he got free attacks whenever someone took a swing at one of his friends.

Greater Bull Rushes provoked, and you could perform a Greater Bull Rush as an AoO
So people would be playing tennis with people until they ran out of Combat Reflexes

Oh, and fighter meant anybody he swung at, hit or miss, took -2 to attack anyone except him.
And at higher levels, missing pushed too.
...Then he started taking area attack powers.
So, yeah, being able to reposition the field is super powerful.
I loved making setpiece battles for that group where the enemy started with strong positional advantage, and the PCs could overtake that position.

Last time I did that, players stood in the choke point and got shot to death. Don't know if my group has matured tactically enough for another choke point combat.

That's not the only kind advantage a position can offer.
Have an obelisk that shoots lightning if you succeed on an Arcana check as a standard action.

We had something like that during a town siege. There were magic cannons on the battlements.

9:45 PM
Or a magic circle which lets anyone standing in it teleport their move speed as a move action.

When it's something simple like that, our parties get it 100%
But a terrain advantage is a lot more subtle to them.

A cloud of magic damage that floats randomly but can be controlled by someone standing in a certain spot.

If it can be translated into TF2 objectives, I think they will get it
And it will be fun

4e had lists of interesting terrain features, it was great.

Point Defense and King of the Hill are great inspirations for encounters.
Capture the Flag is one I've never managed to figure out
4e had more than just difficult terrain?

9:48 PM
Everything I mentioned above is a 4e terrain feature.

Oh that's like a built in thing, not like custom objects?

@BESW that was really fun XD

@Axoren I'll reluctantly link to Dan Dwiki, because the official pages are dead. "Fantastic Terrain (4e Index)"
When I say that 4e was a really good tactical combat engine, this sort of thing is included in what I mean: it's not just the core rules for players, but ways it enables the GM to make engaging setpieces.

@BESW don't forget he also slowed and knocked prone on every attack too
XD
so once he hit someone they were knocked something around 11 squares (more than that if it was a strong Encounter or Daily attack), had to spend a move action to stand up, and then they were only able to move 2 squares that turn too
melee enemies were next to useless for a turn after being hit

Q: Is there a feature in Mutants & Masterminds 3e that is mechanically similar to Evasion in D&D 5e?

TheikIn Mutants and Masterminds, much like in many versions of D&D, Area of Attack abilities allow you a dodge check to take half effect. That's all fine and dandy, but I'm trying to create a character who can see the tiniest movement in his opponents and moves in advance to make certain he's not wher...

10:00 PM
ranged units at the very least probably didn't have range to attack anyone, or only had one choice of target for at least a turn
XD
maybe it was 8 squares or something default but most of his powers also pushed
at wills probably one square and encounters probably like 2 or 3 and dailies could add like 5 push sometimes
it was crazy
that character was so good
and I don't just mean mechanically, it was extremely great role playing next to his player too XD
(I was playin a Tiefling most of the time, and he was a half orc that had pretty bigotted ideas about what Tieflings were like,)

10:23 PM
Yeah, you made some amazing builds, and we had a great group.

I'm going to be running a one-shot that I might eventually turn into a module
A Level 20 gauntlet with a target time of 3 hours
But it could be extended to a whole 10-20 campaign.

That way lies madness!

I know
I want to experience that madness
Don't tell my table, but Double Ancient Dragons
So I can make DAD jokes AND Double Dragon jokes.

1 hour later…

Q: GMing with an overtuned skill monkey

ErudakiI have a player in one of my games, who has managed to create a build that can roll a minimum of 41 by level 7 across a large plethora of skills (mostly excluding dex/str based skills). They use these (alongside spells) to set up webs and endanger opponents without getting directly involved, unti...
