Interesting on the system-tag meta: votes on the first answer are a little over 3-to-1 in favor, votes on the second answer are at 2.5-to-1 in favor. And they propose opposite courses of action. Assuming for the moment that (a) the first answer's first-posted status may have given it a visibility lead and (b) that most people would read it first may "unfairly" bias ambivalent readers in its direction... I'd say that's far from a strong signal in either direction.
Or maybe it is a strong signal, but in both directions!?

Q: How does the damage from Aura of the Guardian and the Berserker Axe interact?

Gael LRedemption Paladins get an “Aura of the Guardian” : Starting at 7th level, you can shield others from harm at the cost of your own health. When a creature within 10 feet of you takes damage, you can use your reaction to magically take that damage, instead of that creature taking it. This feat...

@nitsua60 I don't know, but I do think the first answer may have benefited (on the vote count) from not having counterarguments presented. Many things look really good until someone points out the drawbacks

Absolutely. And, likely had odds stacked a bit in its favor (much as we'd prefer otherwise) just because it was posted by "the mods".

But I'm also more interested in the more "proactive" approach to the problem using the new ask page. On that note: does "regex based" tag warnings that we'd be able to test for "does not include any of X tags and/or phrases"? (should I perhaps ask for that clarification on the MSE post?)

The problem with that kind of warning is that we'd be biased against new systems that haven't been asked before?

@Someone_Evil At this point that is unclear to me. We've put feelers out to the CMs on the issue, but please do ask it as well to show interest in getting that info out there.
@BESW This would definitely be a concern (as I learned in my very first metaRPG post lol)
As well as questions that don't need a system tag.

12:55 AM
@BESW Yes, but as we have room to choose what it says, we'd be able to say something along the lines of: "make sure you are specifying what system you are asking about if it is relevant to the question. If you can't find the tag, make sure you include it in the body". This will have to go through our meta anyway, and that perspective will be important for it. I'm for now just trying to find out if there's a technical barrier to it.

It also remains to be seen if any of that would actually have an effect on the issue, but it would be worth a shot I think depending on the details.

Q: How can I get rid of drama fatigue as a GM?

Maiko ChikyuI GM several games each with different systems through the week. However with GM'ing so many games comes a certain amount of drama. The type of drama I would have to deal with once two-three months under normal circumstances happens every two-three weeks as different groups cause drama unaware of...

A player just cast Power Word: Kill on themselves so that the party could throw their corpse through an Antilife Barrier and the sorcerer could Distant Spell cast Revivify.

I've never been so proud and amazed.

@Axoren LOL! :D

First death to Power Word Kill and it wasn't even the DM who cast it.

You know how sometimes you look at a game map and you can pretty clearly see the shape of the game? I've got this urge to reverse engineer a game from a map by deliberately subverting the intended reading: looking at old D&D-style maps with an eye toward assuming that the bits labelled with goblins and orcs are the protagonists' spaces.

@BESW LOL! That would be pretty cool. working title: "Dungeonhome"

1:44 AM
(I ran across an old note to myself to use the "Two Orcs" map from Firewatch in a game somehow, and I'm looking at it with new eyes. Like, there's a symbol for "Goblin Cave" that takes on an entirely new texture if you assume the party is goblin-friendly.)

@BESW You mean the players don't just walk in from the South?
That map was actually made by the kid in that story for use with D&D, so it's almost a perfect map anyways

Wizards & Wyverns.

@BESW I picked up a copy of The Thousand Cousins....it's not exactly something I'd use off the shelf, but it's definitely got some stuff in there with loads of potential. I think the way the setting handles the Savani among the rest of the Cousins should turn some heads :)

It's deliberately a very South-East-Asian approach to groups dealing with each other.
And I don't think it's intended to be compatible with, say, D&D 5e.
Just like space is a sea and you are its sailors is technically a system-agnostic setting/campaign prompt but doesn't really mesh with a D&D-like system.

2:28 AM
@BESW yeah, it's less "choice of system" and more some of the post-apoc vibes in the setting

I didn't really get post-apocalyptic vibes from it; there's an apocalypse, yes, but it's in the distant past and doesn't inform tech level, resource accessibility, or the complexity of physical or social infrastructures.
It's a localized catastrophe that didn't materially affect anybody outside the nation in which it took place--as the elves with the best economic prospects are the ones who associate most closely with non-Cousins.

@BESW could just be me then :) dunno. still...definitely a conversation starter for sure!

@nitsua60 Something to keep in mind, that we probably dont' have statistics on, is the likelihood of downvoting an answer given that you upvoted a different one.

@Carcer "No one yeets a dwarf!"?
So the Story Games forum is shutting down, should we just remove them from our curated forums list?

@Someone_Evil Gimli: "I cannot jump the distance. You'll have to yeet me. Don't tell the elf."

12:19 PM
@Someone_Evil probably. No point pointing people to a forum they can't actually converse in

12:38 PM
@Someone_Evil Yes once it becomes non-readable, no, but add a note, if the forum will remain archived (on the official site or otherwise), for use as reference.

The purpose of that Q&A is to direct askers who's problem works poorly with our site. I don't then see a point in spending space on it (it is already long enough) on a site which won't be able to handle their address, but just has some old stuff on it

Agreed.

@kent there's a lot around AL I don't understand.

@Powerdork Nothing's good. A lot of people don't like playing with my character and finally one of them told me.

3:09 PM
@Zachiel Aw, how come?

3:26 PM
@kviiri well, it's not a thing I want to speak about publicly.

That's fair

Q: Are there any rules on the creation of a shield guardian?

Sam LacrumbAre there any rules related to the creation of a shield guardian? I am aware of the creation method for the amulet. But I'm asking about creating the actual construct.

3:54 PM
@doppelgreener @Rubiksmoose @V2Blast @BESW @kviiri @Miniman @NautArch I'm on the road for a few days, will be sporadically in and out until Thursday.

So... No rioting?
Have fun!

party time

@Glazius that's a good observation, glad you chimed in.
@Someone_Evil we have until august to decide, when they figure out where the archives will go
@nitsua60 "while the sheep's away the wolves will play" or something like that

So continuing my adventures in making stuff with alcohol, I infused some gin with Sichuan peppercorns.
It tastes absolutely vile but it does retain that very nice numbing mouthfeel that I was going for.

Q: What does the Vorpal Sword ignoring resistance to slashing actually mean?

Taylan ErolI was reading through the Dungeon Master's Guide and I came across a magic item, the vorpal sword. The description states that it is a magic weapon. If I am not wrong, magic weapons bypass resistances and immunities against damage types, but in the description it also states it ignores resistance...

6:02 PM
@Yuuki My wife has tasked me with retrieving a bunch of white raisins, and soaking them in gin for a couple of weeks. She is told that this is part of her pain management strategy. Soak for a few weeks, and then the raisins (due to some gin thing?) improve arthritis pain management. (I guess I get the left over gin for a martini when this is over...)
sorry, Golden Raisins! Yikes! I have been corrected!

@KorvinStarmast I mean, alcohol does see use as a last-resort analgesic on occasion.

@Yuuki That's starting with gin, or with some neutral grain alcohol?

7:54 PM
@MarkWells Gin because I felt like the herbal flavor of gin would go well with the floral notes of Sichuan peppercorn.
It did not.

lol

I also might have used too many peppercorns though.

@Yuuki sometimes we need to try something new (to us) to see why nobody did it before. :) But maybe someone did and they went "uh, not greatest idea"

Hmm... so both light crossbow and heavy crossbow have the two-handed property but the hand crossbow does not.

Seems reasonable.

So the hand crossbow can get CHA damage from Hexblade Warlock?

@Yuuki To be fair, the light crossbow isn't heavy
@Yuuki Yes

@Yuuki Don't ask about why certain weapons have certain properties and just accept the arbitrary-ness (mostly sarcastic, because wow sometimes they really do just seem arbitrary)
