Does exists any Combat-action-oriented-RPG (like D&D) which doesn't have hitpoints (not like D&D) and preferably still is sword and magic style (high fantasy)? I mean, a health system like Apocalypse World (which PC only has "6" HP, not like D&D that has like 100) or preferably Fate (which has stress boxes and consequence slots).

Dungeon World, Mutants & Masterminds (with some re-flavoring), maybe some of the World of Darkness modules

@MikeQ Dungeon World doesn't use Hitpoints?

As far as I'm aware, each PC has a small amount of "stress points" they can take, so it's like hit points but a small number

@MikeQ Ahh, that may be possible, I've only read a bit of it.

1:51 AM
Fate has multiple high-combat trad-fantasy iterations.
Off the top of my head, Shadowcraft, Tianxia, Knights of Invasion, Fate of Agaptus, Masters of Umdaar, Three Rocketeers, Dungeons of Fate, High Fantasy Magic, Freeport, Hunters of Alexandria, Legends of Anglerre....
2
@EnderLook Dungeon World is an Apocalypse World derivative, so if AW's hit points work for you then DW's probably will too.
But what is it you're looking for, that you think a low/no HP engine will help you achieve?
Because Swords & Scrolls would fit the bill but I somehow doubt it's what you're looking for.

2:09 AM
@BESW I was just thinking that HP in D&D is very irrealistic. I mean, a shortsword does 1d6 damage, at lvl 1 that is a lot of damage (you have between 6-12 HP + CON), but at level 20 it is nothing (86 - 152 + CON*20), "mundane" weapons became useless. Also, unless an attack kills you, being more or less wounded doesn't affect (you don't have a disadvantage if you are low of HP or something like that).
I just was wondering if there are combat fantasy RPGs which use a more realistic health system, or at least different than the traditional HP, just interested in reading how other games handle health. I found Fate stress and consequences very interesting after reading that, but I didn't find useful the Fate mechanics itself (sorry, but it gets a bit short in mechanics to have D&D equivalent wizards).
I will look for that games you post here. Thanks

All the ones I listed above in that block are Fate variants.

Q: Heroic, HP-less, Simulationist RPG Suggestions

PipperChipI am looking for an RPG which has the following: This game has "heroic-style" play. This means the characters are special because of the situations they're in, not because of some ability to do stuff. All enemies, even smaller ones, can be deadly unless directly and immediately dealt with. A we...

Q: Looking for a system that effectively models endurance and fatigue

ErnirI am looking for a (fantasy) role-playing system that includes a believable, usable method for tracking the effects of fatigue and determining how they influence capabilities. To provide context for the question: I come from a D&D 3.5 background, where abilities can usually be used at-will (like...

@EnderLook yes, Runequest, if you want to get down into the nitty gritty. Go for it.

Q: What is the best RPG system for realistic combat?

user8626I'm a fan of D20 systems, but the way hit points works always seemed kind of odd. The characters obviously can't develop an ability to take more stab wounds as they gain experience. So that means that all these "hits" are really misses. So what's the difference between a "hit" miss and a "miss...

From what I remember, your armor took damage so that you would not, to a point, and then it no longer protected you. But it's been a few years, details would need a rules refresh, and I don't have my original runequest book anymore.

@EnderLook Dungeon World does use hitpoints, but they don't go up with level. Their use as opposed to the 6-HP "harm clock" reflects a couple of things:
- 1) fantasy adventurers get into great whacking battles more than the apocalyptos, and taking a knock here and there is to be expected
- 2) fantasy adventurers have pretty involved fights, and HP allows for multiple swings incoming and outgoing

2:19 AM
heck, if you want lethal combat, I recall traveller, original, being pretty quick and lethal... but that's a space game not fantasy

- 3) when people are at full, there is pretty close to no amount of damage you'll roll that will kill them outright, making it an excellent way to establish a threat without, y'know, killing someone outright.

Interesting, it seems there are a lot of games that I will must to read their guides
@Glazius That is a problem I found looking for the health system. Adventurers games (which I like) are very combat focuses (which I love), that means they must have HP to take all the incoming damage (which I was trying to avoid) and not a health clock or stress level (because they would take out PC very quickly from fight)

2:32 AM
There's a whole world of "not D&D" out there
3

@EnderLook the other option is that most of your resources are spent avoiding damage in a fight

@EnderLook also, I don't know if you looked at it already, but if you like Fate but just aren't using it because it doesn't have a magic system, Dresden Files Fate RPG actually does that

There's also Fate Freeport for that more traditional flavor.

Yeah DFRPG is set in modern day which is a problem for what you want
But if the magic system works for you you can ignore the rest of it
But yeah if Freeport's setting works that may be better

Ok, thanks. I'll see them tomorrow because here it's quite late and I was going to sleep. My brain doesn't work at this hours to read a guide. Bye, and good night/morning/afternoon/whatever from your UTC time!. I don't know why but I always ask things at very late hours in this chat :)

2:42 AM
I assume it has rules for swords and such

For all that we talked about how Fate's got a settled core, equipment isn't really part of that yet. Lemme pull it off the shelf...

There's a dozen different great ways to incorporate equipment into Fate Core, depending on what role equipment is going to play in your game.

Hmm, lessee. Basic offense stat is Strength(Forceful) and you say if your weapon is martial (weapon:1) heavy (weapon:2 slow) or finesse (use Dex/ pick your attack approach)
Armor is 1/2/3 free invokes to defend yourself per session (CAA during downtime for more), a shield is 1/scene.
Gun'sbrasters are martial or heavy, can be shot 1/scene, and ignore armor.
For everything else, there's Stuntstercard.

@Glazius ah I kinda didn't mean just equipment, my bad, I also meant like, setting, because DFRPG is modern day so you can expect maybe computer hacking or goons with guns to show up in it as well as all the magic creatures and wizards

2:59 AM
All the same, it's not an expectation that a Harry-adjacent person is going to just... have a sword. You pull a sword in Chicago, it says something important.

@DavidCoffron Yes, requires attunement.

You pull a sword in the Whistling Pig, it says you harbor deep suspicions that "eggcups" are even a suit of cards you can have a flush in, but the sword itself is just your personal spice.

@Glazius tis true, it usually means you are one of a very small group of people

@ColinGross yuppers

@GreySage "...my work computer (where I do most of my DnD idea generation) nor my laptop (which I use when running games)." Sounds like you need a work laptop =)

Ben
I need to figure out the maths for my Corruption system, and what can contribute to it.
For example, if I give items that can contribute to corruption, do I give abilities that can accrue, or do I only trigger it on a crit, or only accrue corruption on a fial?
Decisions, decisions...

Individuals are limited to 2700 corruption points per target per encounter.
Organizations cannot contribute corruption points to a target, but can contribute unlimited corruption points to Private Accounts for Corruption, which can then use unlimited corruption points to influence the environment and actors around the target.
On your session-survey you'll be given an option to check a box and donate 3 corruption points to a general "corruption pool" which, applied equally to all targets, it can be assumed corrupts nobody differentially.

3:32 AM
Also, casting Wish automatically gives you an infinite number of corruption points.

Whoever has the most Corruption points wins?

D&D 5E, A donkey and mule are hauling a cart full of supplies. Fireball happens, which doesn't ignite objects "being worn or carried". I'm trying to figure out what the limit is of what the animals are "carrying". The harness or whatever seems like it would be exempt, but should the cart, too? The entire contents of the cart?

@PeterCooperJr. Wait, wait, wait... a donkey and a mule? Don't they have, like, seriously different stride-lengths!?
(he he he)

No, they have exactly the same stat block :)

@PeterCooperJr. In my world the harnesses would be fine, the cart would probably be fine, but the contents of the cart are fair game. (Carts in the nitsuverse are made of PT lumber.)
@PeterCooperJr. touche

3:36 AM
I had ruled at the time that the cart was on fire, which makes sense, but in some ways I wouldn't mind retconning that so that I don't have to figure out what exactly happens to each of the bazillion pieces of equipment the party was carrying on it.
Fireball just saying that objects "ignite" rather than saying that the objects take fire damage means results are a lot open to interpretation. Which I know is an intentional designer choice, and probably the best way to handle it for gameplay sake (like the arbitrary not-worn-or-carried restriction is), but I just have no concept of how I should be interpreting it.
Along with what exactly is a "flammable object"? I mean, a torch certainly is, and a shortsword probably isn't. Is a spear? Leather armor? A sack of rations? I don't suppose there's a list anywhere.

Ben
@MikeQ … [cough] Yyyyeeeeessssss………

@PeterCooperJr. Nope. Ask your players what sort of damage they imagine fireballs doing and go with it.

Ben
3:58 AM
@MikeQ you get a pretty red gem.

hey so, I'm still not quite familiar with stackexchange's features, but I remember before being told that I should put questions of balance into chat. It's related to a specific question though (this one rpg.stackexchange.com/questions/136742/…) should I just ask about that here?

Sometimes questions about questions can go to the meta
@Cyanic But there's no harm in asking in chat

@Cyanic You can always ask in chat and we'll say if it'd be good on the mainsite!

alright, thanks for the tips

Chat is a better venue if you want easy feedback rather than a full-fledged analysis
Or opinions

@nitsua60 top o the morn! WIth the addition of 'suggested edits', is this question becoming more like idea generation?

@NautArch Yes, it seems that way, although a few of the answers look like a good fit/answer.

@KorvinStarmast Both answers are basically frame challenges, which is fine. But it suggests this question isn't ready for primetime...

2:31 PM
Is it wrong to undelete duplicates? mounted combat/sanctuary question

2:43 PM
@NautArch I think that our general attitude is that we don't undelete unless there is a pretty compelling reason; usually leaning towards respecting the wishes of the user as long as it doesn't really affect anybody else.
That being said I hate when it happens.

yeah, that was my feeling. OP deleted it so should probably leave deleted.
but i bet it's more that they don't realize dupes are encouraged

I also dislike when a new user does it and us normal users can't message them and let them know it is unecessary.

well, maybe not encouraged, but you know :)

(I've occasionally flagged for a mod to message them to let them know in the case of new users though I'm not sure I've ever seen them undelete as a result)
Yeah which is understandable
honestly.

totally

2:55 PM
@Rubiksmoose If someone wants to do that, I take it as a sign that they are not interested in our processes/format, or, they are having a bad day and this particular piece of it let them vent their frustration by exercising an option. Either way, I let it go.

@KorvinStarmast mhm. The system already blocks or restricts any kind of impactful deletions so that is indeed the best policy the majority of the time.

3:11 PM
@KorvinStarmast Possibly overlooked: other stacks (especially SO) will downvote dupes with extreme prejudice. OP might have the impression from those other stacks that duplicates are generally hated.

Too broad or not?

Q: How can a spell caster increase the probability that they can cast a spell from a scroll that is a higher level than they can cast?

L0neGamerFrom what I understand, even a level 1 Wizard can try to read a wish scroll. But how can an adventurer increase their likelihood of doing so? To be clear, this does not necessarily mean in what way can a level 1 Wizard increase their ability in such a way. This question is in hope for a more con...

@Xirema that seems...kind of odd. I mean I guess they could say it shows lack of effort, but some of the dupes are really hard to find. Some of them involve a greater understanding of the question (and answer) than the poster would even have.

I don't think so.

I'm also inclined towards "no"

@Rubiksmoose It's going to be a long list.

@ColinGross How long will it really be though?

3:16 PM
It also might not be a connection the OP made on their own between increasing skill checks and casting a scroll.
@Rubiksmoose help, guidance, multiclassing options, probably a warlock option, probably a sorcerer option
All of those, save for guidance, are probably a few sentences at least.

@ColinGross are you saying that a few paragraphs is too long? Right now it seems like those things you have listed there are perfectly reasonable. I've definitely made longer list-type answers than that.

@Rubiksmoose I don't know how convoluted and numerous the multiclassing options will be.

hmmm
This might just be a case where we just wait and see. If all the answers start looking really long and yet imcomplete, then we can close it then.

Nor how many ways offhand a warlock or sorcerer options might be. Those always seem convoluted to the edge of credulity, but technically correct.... you know... the best kind of correct.
@Rubiksmoose Seems like circular logic, but I won't vote to close it either way.
I would be hesitant to use the number and length of responses to calculate the probability that a question is too broad or even inform that decision.

@ColinGross Not really circular logic, just waiting for evidence. Neither of us seem to know exactly how long the answer will be. Looking at answers as they come in is a good way to judge it. If the first answer(s) come in and are complete then there really isn't an issue. But if they are very long but yet still struggling to capture all the options it might be good to look at closing.
@ColinGross It certainly isn't a cut and dry thing, but I find it helpful many times to look at answers for signs of issues with the question. Not everyone ascribes to this, but it works for me.

3:25 PM
@Rubiksmoose Fair enough. The only counter example I can think of would be that all questions @Xirema answer would have evidence of the question being too broad.
Some people tend toward verbose answers as a matter of course.

@ColinGross verbosity isn't the issue. Long answers are perfectly fine. However, Xirema's answer would likely be long and complete. Note I said "But if they are very long but yet still struggling to capture all the options.." But again that's just kind of how I do things.

@Rubiksmoose How are you going to know if an answer is complete if you don't have a ground truth or at least an internal "complete" answer to compare it to?
If you already have that, why wait for posted answers?

@ColinGross Like I said, it's not cut and dry but it is much easier to look at a list and see things that are(n't) missing then to go through and generate a list by yourself most of the time I would say. And it isn't only one person. If I write an answer it depends on only my knowledge. If I post an incomplete answer, likely people will either comment asking me to add this or that or add their own answer which might be more complete or just have a completely different set of options.
Thus the stack hivemind will check answers and hopefully catch missing things.

@Rubiksmoose I think hivemind implies a greater organization than exists. The common sense of the masses can be compelling.

3:43 PM
@ColinGross that is indeed what I meant

@Rubiksmoose Unwashed and unruly. Just the way we like them.

Speaking of verbose answers though, I added a section (the last one) to my answer on Can I Ready an action to do something I'm not currently capable of doing?, do you think it helps me or hurts?
I'm trying to address this idea people have that the rules have to create a narrative that makes sense when that isn't always the case RAW. And that that is totally a DM call. But I also think people are seeing way too many narrative flaws in this mechanic where they don't really exist.
Appreciate any thoughts or opinions on it.

You can totally cast a spell without valid targets. Xanthar's goes into this. The spell fizzles and you lose the slot.

@ColinGross Correct.

I can cast hold person on a chair. It's a waste of a spell slot, but it could be done.

3:48 PM
I guess that is true
Though that is an optional rule.

The fighter can say, "I hold my action to cast fireball". You can inform the player that the character does not have the capacity to actually cast the spell, and they can sort that out or not. I think narrating things that aren't possible or where the target isn't what it appeared to is interesting.
@Rubiksmoose At some point casting a spell on an invalid target comes up, so you either end up using that optional rule or a house rule.

@ColinGross mhm. I tweaked my wording. Does that improve it?

I think your original was fine. Ignore the mob, we don't like them anyway ;-}

@ColinGross which original? The one without the last section? Or without the tweaked spell targeting wording?

@Rubiksmoose Whatever it was when I read it yesterday

3:54 PM
@ColinGross gotcha

I thought, "that's a nice answer"

@ColinGross Daw :) Well I'll mull it over. And see how I feel in a bit. Appreciate the input. :)

@Rubiksmoose The current incarnation is fine as well.

2 hours later…
6:10 PM
@Rubiksmoose don't think it's too broad, but it's basically a list question of how can I increase my ability check and specifically spellcasting ability check.

@NautArch Which I think the OP didn't see as essentially being the same. How to increase the arcana ability or add to any ability check. However, that's just my assumption.

@NautArch yup for sure. Though list question in the sense that the answers will be in list form as opposed to "list question" which is a type of question we close because they have no end.

@Rubiksmoose I still am unsure what we do with list questions. at times we allow and answer.
@ColinGross I don't think it's an arcana check. It's just a spellcasting ability check, no?

@NautArch Depends on the type of list question.

@NautArch They're pretty useful to me at least.
@NautArch Pretty sure it's Arcana
But now I'm going to have to go look it up.
It's arcana to copy it to a spellbook. Spellcasting check to cast from a scroll.

6:16 PM
> Also note that a list question means a question whose answers are a near-infinite, undifferentiated list. Not a question where an answer to it is a short list of items. A question about "which ioun stones will give me a stat bonus" can yield a correct answer that is a short list of items. "Which magic items are cool" on the other hand yields an infinite list of answers where there is no qualitative measure of which is most helpful.

@Rubiksmoose Second one dies as opinion based first.
I think it's "not cut and dry" as to what list answers are too long.

@ColinGross Yeah there's not a definitive answer.

Even questions that have definitive, definable lists as answers would be considered list questions

Could probably define a heuristic for definitely too long. Is the list more than X dozen entries? Then it's definitely too long.

like "how many ways can I build a level 4 character?"

6:21 PM
I'd propose 2 dozen as a decent cut off. If you asked a question and the answer is more than two dozen different things that don't get grouped somehow to reduce the list... probably a bit much.
@goodguy5 42

@ColinGross I'm positive it's higher than that

@goodguy5 However, that isn't a list question. I could estimate an upper bound on that. Races * classes * subclasses * feats ... etc
The answer to that is a number with a bit of show your work

Well, then you have to incorporate multiclassing

@goodguy5 It's not. That's the answer to life, the universe, and everything.

OK, the "read a spell scroll" question now has a "teach a man to fish" answer.

6:23 PM
I know. I read.... 4? of the books

@goodguy5 Sure, but that's still just adding combinations. You didn't ask to enumerate all the ways.
@KorvinStarmast Sometimes people put scrolls in bottles and throw them into the ocean!

fair
"what are the ways" is different than "how many ways?'

@goodguy5 I think you've hit on it. "What are the ways" seem like a dangerous component in a question.

And if that "list" is either subjective or endless, it's usually a bad question
hrm....

@goodguy5 Maybe. Sometimes, there's a million ways to do a thing, but there are a few generally agreed upon best practices.

6:26 PM
Though we have questions the community regards as "good" that are basically "what are the ways I can deal with X player?"

@goodguy5 Good counterpoint!
@goodguy5 However, those are opinion based and subject to being closed as such based on the opinions of those that vote to close things as opinion based.

fair, I suppose

Which I find entertaining on occasion.

but basically any interpersonal question is "opinion based" and we've established that those are on topic.

@goodguy5 Opinion based and on topic. What is this blasphemy?!? /s

6:30 PM
@ColinGross not necessarily POB.

@Rubiksmoose What is good might have consensus, but that's still just an aggregate opinion.
I don't view opinion based as bad, as getting consensus on other people's opinions... especially a focused community... is usually pretty darned helpful.

The key to closing a question as POB is the P. Primarily Opinion-Based means that the answer will or must rely only on opinion and cannot be answered using our Good Subjective guideline. Opinion-based questions are fine as long as the answers to said question can follow the guidelines.

You're referring to applying the criteria here? stackoverflow.blog/2010/09/29/good-subjective-bad-subjective

Yup thats the big one anyways.

There are other criteria?

6:34 PM
If anyone wants to improve my combined 1d4 and 1d6 (guidance and bardic inspiration) illustration with better "expected average" by all means do so. I think it's close enough.

@KorvinStarmast I think that answer is more than adequate. I have no desire to dive into finding esoteric methods of increasing a spellcasting check.

@ColinGross coool

@KorvinStarmast Did you see their latest comment? THere may be some homebrew here we don't know about (although I'm not sure it'll make a difference.)

@ColinGross Well, for POB that is the biggest one.

I popped in a link to anydice anyway

6:37 PM
For answers the rule is to Back it Up. Unfortunately we don't have a good GSBS write-up for answers currently.

@NautArch I have not, been to busy editing a messy answer. Needs liposuction

@Rubiksmoose We should probably change the name of that to include "subjective" and maybe point directly to the criteria with a link.

@ColinGross Well we don't close questions for being subjective, because certain subjective questions are fine. I'm not sure if changing the language will help there but I see what you mean.

@Rubiksmoose Seems like opinion based closings remain opinion based with nebulous criteria.

Regardless changing that is way beyond the power we have here. That has to be taken to SO

6:40 PM
@Rubiksmoose I have a difficult time sorting out what's skinnable and what's not.

@ColinGross That's because they are largely opinion-based. That is why we have robust voting for closure and voting for reopening mechanics. The idea is that the thoughts and opinions of the masses will arrive at the correct answer.

@Rubiksmoose But we're so unwashed and unruly!

^

@ColinGross XD
Anyways that is my take on the issue. I'm sure the more veteran members could say it better.
And/or have different takes on it.

@Rubiksmoose But would those takes be little and yellow?

6:49 PM
@ColinGross Nope. That one I don't get lol

@Rubiksmoose Nuprin. Little. Yellow. Different. Better. Popularized by Wayne's World.

@ColinGross It has been a long time since I've seen that lol

Usually I have @Yuuki around for these old pop culture refs.

Nuprin was just advil, right?

@ColinGross Illegal Move on the Offense - Unrecognized Shout-out. Penalty: 5 yards, second down.

6:52 PM
yea. ibuprofin

@Yuuki I would like to take my mulligan.

@ColinGross Look man, I don't write the rules. I'm just doing my job as a pop culture ref(eree).

@KorvinStarmast OP on that ability check question just confirmed this is kind of mission critical. You may want to add to your answer that an unsuccessful casting will erase the spell scroll. That'd be a huge bummer for that PC.

@Yuuki So that was over the line. This isn't bowling man.

7:10 PM
@NautArch I already did, as I revised the opener.
I cited the scroll spell rules

Apparently I can't nominate this for re-opening as I voted for re-opening it last time it was on hold for being too broad rpg.stackexchange.com/questions/136715/…
Which seems like a bug.

@ColinGross huh. I knew it did that for closing, but I don't think I've ever had the opportunity to run into it for reopening.
That being said it seems symmetrical so it seems like it could be intended

@Rubiksmoose Yeah. Closed for being too broad. Editted & reopened. Closed for being opinion based. My vote for reopen seems like it should have been erased once the first re-open went through.

@KorvinStarmast "You'll wan the Lucky feat" typo

@Rubiksmoose Is it symetrical? @KorvinStarmast did you cast your vote on both on-hold polls?

7:25 PM
@ColinGross In other words if I vote to close a post, no matter what I cannot vote to close it again.

@Rubiksmoose You've experienced that?

I'm not entirely sure but I suspect that also applies to letting a close vote time out as well.
@ColinGross For sure.
It is really frusterating when you vote to close it for some reason (Unclear eg) and then it gets fixed and reopened. Then you realize it is a dupe and you can't VtC it again.

@Rubiksmoose You're right. It was @KRyan that VtC the first time and @KorvinStarmast the second.
Awww... poor form. OP voted to reopen his own question.

@ColinGross Is that a faux pas? I've done it. I think it is the correct thing to do if you've made changes or otherwise think it needs to be reopened because it puts it back in the queue I think.
Well I've done it once lol

@Rubiksmoose It's not disallowed. Just seems like proof reading your own work.

7:30 PM
@ColinGross Also a good way to signal "I made my changes; I think it's good now" though as well.
I'm just saying I don't judge people when they do it as a rule.

@Rubiksmoose Good point. I judge people all the time for no reason whatsoever. I assume your socks don't match your outfit! judged!

@ColinGross I'm hurt! I thought my socks were charmingly mismatched!

Oh, and it's not matching as you might assume. It's material. Denim pants? Needs a denim shirt and socks and underoos.

@ColinGross I purposefully make sure my socks are never the same color as each other.
/r/firstworldanarchists

@ColinGross That's.... a heck of a lot of denim.

7:33 PM
@Rubiksmoose Not by Canadian standards.

@ColinGross oh dear... I guess I've never been aware of how close I live to the Denimocalypse

@Rubiksmoose Denimtopia is more like it!
Fleece lined denim.

Well you do yew lol

7:53 PM
@Rubiksmoose I cedar's a bit of wordplay going on.

@Rubiksmoose Always looking to reinvent myself.

8:07 PM
@Rubiksmoose Thats when you tell us internet mobsters and we dupe it for you.

@GreySage "Hey man, I just need a little Dupe to get me through to the next question."

what is the book WGtE?

@goodguy5 Wayfinder's Guide to Eberron

ah ha
thank you
the double blade scimitar looks neat

No problem!

8:16 PM
I miss the old litany of weird weapons with odd mechanical bonuses.
19-20 crit and 4x crit multipliers
Hrm.... Actually

How viable would a 3.x Falcata be in 5e?

@Rubiksmoose You wouldn't think a guy with a 90% up vote rate would get caught up in something like dupe abuse.

expected damage on a greatsword is 7 (8.33 with gwfs) with regular 2x crit on 20
expected damage on a Falcata would be 5 (6 with gwfs), but crits would bump it up to 15 (18 with gwfs)

@goodguy5 The threat range modifiers were the worst. Crit on a 16? ... just maximize for number of attacks/round

yea. I wasn't a huge fan of those, but I did like crit multipliers
oh! I'm thinking of the scythe, which had a 4x.

@ColinGross hey man, I don't care if you call me a Dupe fiend or a Dupe celestial or anything. As long as I can keep Duping up I'll keep the upvotes flowing.

8:21 PM
trade off 2+ damage most of the time for an average of 4-7 damage on crit..... hrm.... doesn't seem super worth

@Rubiksmoose you need to slow your roll20, man. Those related questions aren't going to last forever.
@goodguy5 Trading a wider curve for a steeper one.

yea

@goodguy5 I did think they were interesting in PF but I'm not sure I would say I miss them.

The thing that really made silly crit modifiers worth in 3.x was that it applied to your strength as well. (or whatever ability)
So, the barbarian that was power attacking with a scythe?
Sure, you didn't crit often, but when you did, it was for 50+ damage

@goodguy5 When in battle, sometimes you have to make hay.

8:24 PM
and it felt soooooo good
You could occasionally get enough damage to make even the wizards turn their heads in astonishment.
I'll probably introduce it as a magic item. The problem is that my party is currently not super melee weapon focused.

What's the wizard -> fighter spell? Tenser's Transformation?

Reaping Scythe: This ancient scythe hums with an uneasy power. It seems thirsty. +1 weapon. 2d4. two handed. On a critical hit, the Reaping Scythe deals an extra 4d4 necrotic damage in addition to the normal critical damage.
Is that good enough to be used?

9:09 PM
@ColinGross Oh dear, what have I done? (Bridge On River Kwai moment)

@goodguy5 If one can have scythes as weapon proficiency, yeah. If not, I say the to-hit opportunity cost makes it pretty weak in comparison to mundane weapons
Also, if it's the only magical weapon you've got and you desperately need something to bypass mundane damage resistances.
Or if you need to mow lawn or harvest grain without modern tech

@goodguy5 Fixed, thanks, and a few other clean up items done.

9:32 PM
@KorvinStarmast Nothing actually. I misremembered a username starting with K for the closing votes of rpg.stackexchange.com/questions/136715/…
Turns out the close an reopen votes are single use only. Can't vote to reopen even after it's been reopened and closed again for a different reason.

@ColinGross I think I saw that one in a review queue, and with 3 votes already to close I went along. Maybe should have read it again? Not sure.

@KorvinStarmast It got re-editted, and i couldn't stuff it back into the queue.
Not that the original vote was bad.

Eh, my answers have had too many bugs in them today. Need to be a little sparser in the prose ... fewer words.

@KorvinStarmast grunts

@GreySage nods

9:44 PM
