8:00 PM
How do the things on the back work exactly?

mechanically?

yes

I'm still chewing on it. But my first thought is:

"A creature can take an action to deal 1 charge to a pustule. Once a pustule reaches 3(? still thinking on the number) charges, it ruptures, dealing <a large amount of damage> to the blightfather. The creature must be within the same range that they would use to make an attack."

@goodguy5 I've split up monolithic boss fights into multiple target-able "creatures" that are part of the whole. Makes it possible to wear down the boss such that it actually gets weaker as it takes more damage.

@ColinGross I've done something similar. But I don't think I'd do that with this specific foe.

8:04 PM
"A creature can take an action to attempt to inflict 1 stress charge to a pustule. Once a pustule reaches 3 the blightfather makes a CON SV. On fail it explodes dealing double damage to the blightfather on success regular damage. Creatures within the blast radius make a DEX SV to either take half or full damage

Doing something similar with an alternate way of damaging the large boss seems interesting. Trading away 3 actions seems like an awful lot.

@KaleDodge I would, personally, avoid the weakness of the monster dealing damage to the party.

@KaleDodge Or con save per damage. 10 or half the damage whichever is greater?

both good ideas

@ColinGross The point being that it would be "guaranteed" damage. no attack roll, no damage roll.
And I plan on putting in some sort of "When the blightfather is reduced below half hp (bloodied), he <gets weaker in some appreciable way. Vulnerability or something>."

8:08 PM
@goodguy5 That's a neat idea.

@Rubiksmoose more recent tweet which is more accurate and clear
Bestial Fury is when the beast can use Multiattack at the ranger's command. https://twitter.com/fritomuncher/status/609486642617806850

So, for argument's sake.

Blightfather.
HP - 90
Resistance to Piercing*, Bludgeoning*, Slashing*

<Pustules text here> does 25 damage.

When the blightfather is reduced below half health, he loses his resistances to buldgeoning, piercing, and slashing damages.

or something

@DavidCoffron ahhh much clearer.

@goodguy5 I did something like that for a witch who lost resistance after they destroyed her magic cauldron. My players took it the wrong way and spent half the session looking for a Spellbook that had the "homebrew spell"...

that's funny
I'd let them attack once or twice and then tell them. "you notice your attacks are less effective than you'd expect. Those writhing pustules on his back, however. They don't seem as hardy"

8:14 PM
@goodguy5 Could be a perception or arcane knowledge check right off the bat, and give it to them after a round or two.

also @DavidCoffron I just realized that baby dk has the logo I sent you with your raven on it.
@ColinGross yea. good point

@goodguy5 yep. Had to keep the original in some way

8:34 PM
is this question a dupe of the ones linked in @Xirema 's comment?

@NautArch I'm actually about 50:50 on whether it's a dupe or not, but I'm still confident it's the same answer.

^
I almost want to answer

Yes, Your wand can be a Yew wand.

You do Yew wand.

Also, I've been under the impression that a Sorcerer Arcane Focus is not cross-compatible with a Wizard Arcane Focus, even if they permit the same items, so if I've been mistaken about that, there's quite a bit of retconning to do.

Backstory help, im making a family and the 5 kids who grew up, having trouble with ideas for 1 of the sisters,

Zander

8:38 PM
@KaleDodge happy, dark, sad, violent?

typing context

ah

@KaleDodge When she was a baby, a "wise sage" (possibly a crazy person mistaken for "wise") declared that she would be the center of a terrible prophecy that would bring about the end of the world.

gah, i'm still deep-diving into Elder Scrolls lore
pls send help

@Yuuki no help allowed. You are gone forever
The only thing to save you from ES lore is Dark souls lore, but I'm not sure it'll solve your problem

8:40 PM
@Xirema ugh its a close call. Interesting how the same answer that was chosen last time is getting a much different reception this time
And I tend to agree I think the selected answer on the old question is incorrect.

@DavidCoffron Dark Souls lore is far less philosophical than ES lore.

@Rubiksmoose probably because the old question didn't include an example that is much more illustrative
@Yuuki but it gets crazier

@DavidCoffron That is a very good point.

@DavidCoffron ES lore gets pretty damn crazy.

@Rubiksmoose "Can one object be two different focuses?" is, technically, a different question from "Can one object be two different focuses if both classes are permitted to use that type of object as a focus?"

8:42 PM
@Xirema Yeah. I'm inclined to leave them apart honestly.

In ES, reality exists as a dream or conceptual debate between two sides.

@Xirema The former is closer to this question

Zander is the eldest son and a rebel but good natured, sarcastic but deeply caring, Esmeralda is the oldest sister who im having trouble with, Lyrith is the player character who became a whisper bard multiclass a dip into cleric who hoards knowledge like a dragon and consumes like a kid with candy, Elwin is an very energetic but shy red head artificer who traveled to live with dwarves in the mountains, and the youngest is Astra a shadow sorcerer who joined and took over a sadistic cult that indocterated clueless people to sap their life force.
If you would like more info on parents ill post the bio but the main theme of the mainly is knowledge and social power

A lot of the really powerful and esoteric magic functions off this concept of reality simply being an argument.

8:46 PM
@KaleDodge as an eldest child, I like the idea of overshadowed by the second oldest (as I am). Perhaps the eldest is the only one who didnt become an adventurer and just has a simple scribe job or something

I mean, as DM, my instinct is to give a multiclassed character a special quest to forge their cross-class focus, maybe needing one or two expensive components, maybe giving the resulting item some extra bonus.

@Xirema I would just make it cost more (since it's custom made), having it equal the same as a component pouch

(The expense being proportional to how different the two focuses are)

So far in my story I have so far, the eldest was actually banished by the mother when he came to age
Argument that got extreme
@xirema oh I am going to, she hasn't multiclassed yet but she plans to which is important to mention

@KaleDodge maybe wasn't magically gifted on her own and was cobsorting with or researching about fiends (trying to become a warlock for that darker knowledge)

8:49 PM
@Xirema What if I choose to combine an apple and an orange?

@KaleDodge oh I got confused. Eldest sister is not the eldest overall

@Yuuki That depends. Are they both intended to function as Spellcasting focuses for two different classes?

@Yuuki I think that's a completely comparable situation

@Xirema I mean... if you say yes, Mr. GM, then for Sure!

@Xirema Orange you glad that I didn't think too hard about this joke?

8:50 PM
No in order its Zander Esmeralda Lyrith Elwin Astra

Unfortunately, it creates the universally comparable object. All comparisons are then possible to the applorange

@KaleDodge Are you perhaps missing a "Dumbledore" in there somewhere?
Perhaps between "Lyrith" and "Elwin"?

@Yuuki Banana. (enunciated as though I am viciously cussing)

I don't get the reference I never dived heavily into potterlore

No, it's just that the initialism would then spell ZELDA.

8:51 PM
@ColinGross to measure how different things are, the new unit is the applorange. If they are as different as an apple and an orange, they are 1 applorange apart.

Wait no, replace "Elwin" with "Dumbledore".

@KaleDodge maybe Esmeralda and Zander were very close and Esme went with Zander after the banishing.

No I wanted to keep the kids separated one by one, gives my player more personal encounters to deal with over the campaign.
I like that warlock idea

@KaleDodge well. So far it looked like everyone left home. Esme maybe stayed?

I can have esme reunite with her mother after the father and mother split apart
Warlock ideas? I cant do great old one and fiend doesn't seem like a good fit, fey? I don't know much about running a fey patron

9:01 PM
Wax has a density of 900 kg/m3 and a pound of wax cost 5 sp, but candles cost 5 cp. So a candle weights 0.1 lb, equivalent to 0.05 cm3 of wax volume... a bit little, isn't it? This game economy is killing me, I hate this kind of inconsistencies!

@EnderLook Your intermingled use of pounds and kilograms is killing me

It's almost like it's a combat game and not meant to be extrapolated into a world or economy

@EnderLook Maybe the candles are made from a different kind of wax/a non-wax substance?

Maybe the wick and oils are the more expensive part

@KaleDodge undying is fun (archlich). The point of fey is to make it feel very sporadic. The archfey seems to want something different every other session. Fey are very moody

9:05 PM
@SirCinnamon Wikipedia has kg but the game has pounds. It took me a while to convert them

@GreySage Labor costs.

@Xirema No, that would make the candle cost more, not less

I can work with a necro warlock archlich patron

@GreySage Golems make the candles and they actually pay the factory to make the candles. Thus it is cost reduction for the candle manufacturer.

I think the real answer is that the wax merchant is jacking up the prices for the adventurers.

9:08 PM
@GreySage Melt down the candles, sell the raw wax, buy more candles. Infinite Money Exploit!

@GreySage Possible

@EnderLook Historically, tallow was used to make candles, more often than wax

That density is from paraffin wax is made with slack wax which is a mixture of oil and wax, a byproduct from the refining of lubricating oil. So
Wax 5 sp/lb.
Oil 1 sp a pint or 1 lb less 2 cp from the flask which weight 1 lb. So a pint of oil cost 8 cp and weight 0 lb...
Since the weight and volume are... also inconsistent is even more difficult to calculate.
@SirCinnamon Tallow? I'll investigate tha and look the price in the D&D market

@EnderLook Candles made from coagulated fat
(ish)

@EnderLook Or just... dont. Don't worry about the manufacturing process of DnD candles, it won't improve your life in a meaningful way.

9:15 PM
@Delioth Yes. I didn't know what means tallow in english.

Apparently both the making and burning of tallow candles gave off an extremely unpleasant smell!

@GreySage But I will not be in peace with my self until discovering the secret of the candles business.

The secret is "because wizards"

1 lb. of tallow is 2 sp. Sadly I can't find the density

Doesn't matter what the question is. If there are no other sensible answers, then the reason is "because wizards"
Unless this is 40k, in which case the answer is "because psykers"

9:21 PM
@MikeQ The entire candle industry, across all the multiverse, is secretly run by a single epically powerful 20th level wizard, who uses his mastery of the arcane to procure wax and his army of undead minions to make and distribute the candles.

@GreySage And they pay royalties to Mystra's magic?

@GreySage And, of course, to deal with any burgeoning "competition"

@EnderLook Internet says 1 pound of tallow is ~1.1 pints

@Delioth Oh, thanks!

Or, for the easier conversions in metric yourself, 865.64 kg per cubic meter
That calculator lets you give a weight of (food) [tallow as an option], and it'll spit out the volume of that much (food)

9:33 PM
So tallow cost 2 sp per pound, which is the same as 1.1 pints. So a candles weights (5 cp / 2 sp) = 0.25 lb, equivalent to 0.275 pints or 130cm3, enough volume to fill a vial or half of cup! So canddles are possible and there isn't a wizard behind them. Thanks!

@EnderLook Maybe in your game, I'm going to make Lucerno, the transdimensional lich with a monopoly on candles, a recurring character in my game.

Great!

New idea for my next one shot: 5e rules, but no combat or adventuring or dungeon diving. Just merchants and economics.

@MikeQ That sounds, and I mean this in the nicest way, awful lol

I prefer the term "experimental"

9:42 PM
@MikeQ Sounds like a performance art piece

Players will take the role of innkeepers and merchants who must deal with pesky metagaming adventurers
Prepare for losses as you inexplicably buy a bunch of battle-worn junk at half market cost

@MikeQ Oh good, we Recettear now.
I call dibs on the role of the Loan-shark fairy companion.

@Xirema As long as I can have the loan shark-fairy

@Rubiksmoose You can, as long as you can find someone to loan it to you.

Object.prototype.push = function(key, value){this[key] = value}

9:50 PM
@GreySage That is always the trick. They are in very high demand.

^ I had a dev earlier try to push to an object (as opposed to an array), so I had to make it possible as a joke
Please never do this in production code

@Delioth It really pushes your buttons eh?

Not really, I think it's neat and fun. But modifying the Object prototype is really wonky and you shouldn't do it

10:08 PM
@MikeQ New idea for my next one-shot: turn the Collector into a Merchant compendium class that opens on Happy Salesman and everyone starts at L3 with two Merchant advances.

10:34 PM
@Glazius Collector? What are you talking about?

11:12 PM
@MikeQ It's a playbook in Inverse World, an alternate setting for Dungeon World.

11:25 PM
@Glazius Interesting idea. I haven't played Dungeon World yet so I dunno how comfortable/capable I'd be trying to DM it
For the immediate future, my plans involve running awful experimental 5e one-shots

@MikeQ I think that either the PHB or the DMG says that 'battleworn' junk is more or less valueless ... I've had DM's rule 10% up to 1/3 to "destroyed, worthless" . The "Half" for selling back gear is new stuff, Adventure League, when you first start out.

Even if it's not heavily worn, it's still used
"Oh boy, this now-dead kobold was wearing armor worth 75 gp. Let's take it back to town and sell it to someone"

@MikeQ The value of the armor depends on how the kobold was made "now-dead".

Maybe most businesses in D&D operate like pawn shops, and will buy and sell whatever the adventurers want
