I don't always downvote, but when I do, I prefer dos equis
or something

@goodguy5 I don't understand why it's an (implied) exclusive or. I do believe that there's actually a fun to the physical action of rolling the couple of carved bits around in one's hand and tossing them out and luxuriating momentarily in the not-knowing. Why else have dice always existed? So, yes, I actually enjoy the rolling of dice, and I don't think there's any reason to push back on the notion that one might.
Combine that with playing at swinging swords, which I also like, and play-acting, which I also like, and accountancy, which I also like, and hanging out with my friends, which I also like, and you've got an activity that I find more fun than craps.

you can play craps with your friends

So there's no need to suggest that someone who likes rolling dice should just go play craps, I think.

but again, I was making a point

I must have missed the point?

7:33 PM
@nitsua60 The one thing I dislike about VTT is the lack of actual dice

I'm just trying to get to a point (that I think pavel is also working towards) that it's not the dice rolls that make things fun; it's the interactions between players and the world.

So, if you want there to be a chance at a player succeeding at something, then it should be done within the parameters of what the character can do, rather than a 5% chance that the character can achieve something outside of their bounds.
I guess I could have just linked my own answer, but meh

That might be true for some players. I'm saying that for some players, and I'm raising my hand here, simply the physical and mental interaction of rolling a die is actually fun. So when you say "it's not the dice rolls that make things fun" I don't entirely agree--that's what I'm pushing back against.

dice rolls and mechanics are a vessel for prompting and pushing the fun forwards. we could all just be playing freeform.

The "should" in your statement seems grounded in a playstyle that isn't mine. And while I have no intention of trying to take your way of having fun away from you, I'm asking that you recognize that others might have it different ways.

yesterday, by Rubiksmoose
There are many games called D&D. You just have to figure out which one best suits your group.

7:37 PM
There are players who--no matter how ridiculous in the narrative the notion of the hunchback seducing Galadriel--are very happy to see it happen 5% of the times it's attempted.

eh, philosophical differences

I'll also point out that the ways we derive our fun in games varies. Some derive fun directly from dice rolls. Some derive fun from tactics, some from roleplaying a character, some from the story, some from victories, some from watching other people roleplaying, some from exploration, some from defining things, some from discovery, etc -- most people derive fun from a combination.

anyway, I'm leaving. so have a nice weekend

@goodguy5 you too!

7:38 PM
Be well!

I go to lunch and the whole convo comes back
@goodguy5 Have a good one

@SirCinnamon the plan worked guys

I wouldn't advise "Loudest player wins" UNLESS you are doing Warhammer40k ork roleplay.

@NautArch I've been using DnDB, personally.

I'm gonna read that as Dungeons and Dragon Breakfast. The system for Bed and Breakfast adventures.

7:41 PM
There had to be a cereal D&D crossover right? at some point?

@nitsua60 Not to be mistaken by the ad agency BBDO
Or DDB

"You enter the Golden Violin Bed and Breakfast. The dragon that runs the place is charging 10 gold more than on the original billing slip!"

@Rubiksmoose I'm pretty sure Franken Berry, Boo Berry, and Count Chocula were promotional advertising tie-ins for the release of Ravenloft. (Pay no attention to the decade-plus that transpired between the two.)

@nitsua60 To me, that must be some kind of database.

@Maximillian "Roll for initiative!"

7:43 PM
@Anaphory It is some kind of database :)

@nitsua60 post promotion. Genius!

"I play 'I have a coupon' for a one time +4 to initative."

"That coupon expired" [casts countercoupon]

@Maximillian There is also a charge for defecating in the waste bin. Too much mead.

(I'm definitely picturing this dragon voiced by Bob Newhart, btw.)

7:45 PM
Hmm. I'm going to have the wife start casting Greater Complaint while I figure this out...

@Rubiksmoose Stop following me around! :)

Later: "You don't get XP for this battle, but you do get the room with the view over the lake."

@NautArch [rolls a 1 on my hide check] Uhhhhh fancy seeing you here stranger!
I'm assuming you were there because of the updoot?
or did you really just happen to be looking at that when I was?

@Rubiksmoose post-updoot edit. then saw your edit :)

@NautArch hah! so you are following me.

7:49 PM
@Rubiksmoose I guess so! But I didn't know I was following you until the edit.
that was my 2nd question asked.

I'm glad you made whatever edit you did because there was a typo in there that was killing me. But I probably would have left it so as not to bump the question over a minor edit. But once you did I went to town!
@NautArch when you ace your stealth check but fail your perception check.

@Rubiksmoose That was the first time the DM used a petrification ability against us.
Didn't get us that time - but the 2nd time he petrified our barbarian for about a year in real time. Not sure how long it was in game time.
@Rubiksmoose critical fumble.

@NautArch holey moley.

@Rubiksmoose yeah, the player rolled up a new PC (sorcerer) and then about 6 months ago we encountered the statue of our barbarian in the home of the Efreeti whom I had thought I killed (that was the story of the death save/not death save). Cleric cast greater restoration and brought him back. DM gave player the choice of who he wants to continue with.
Even though the barbarian was a few levels behind, he was an original character and he wanted to finish the campaign with him.

> PLAYER: "I cast <save or die spell>."
DM: "Great. Do you target the Cultist swinging the golden ritual sickle, or the one holding the screaming baby?"
PLAYER: "I target the baby."
🤔
I mean... I guess that's a valid strategy.

7:55 PM
@Yuuki I was just on that AskReddit thread, some good stuff in there

> The spell then deflects off of the baby back at the caster causing him to lose his body. The baby then grows up to be unknowingly famous and becomes known as "The Boy Who Lived."

@SirCinnamon I ship it

@NautArch huh, well honestly not sure what I would have done in that position.... I would have depended on which of my characters I liked the most.

@Rubiksmoose He definitely preferred the barbarian. And although he was a few levels behind, he was also holding a manual of bodily health.
This is our barbarian who currently has an AC of 26 or 27. +3 shield, and crazy stats.
unarmored.

@NautArch A barbarian's AC should be measured in hit points

8:00 PM
twenty..... six....... ac.......

@SPavel he has like 190 or something. It's crazy.

@NautArch woooooow

Sucks for me because the DM creates encounters to handle that, but then I'm getting hit and brought down while on the front line with him because of my lower ac and hp.

What flavour barb? Theres one in xanathars that has some strong taunt mechanics

@SirCinnamon Cinnamon.

8:03 PM
@Yuuki My favourite

@NautArch Barbarians block attacks with their chest

In my campaign the Druid just grabbed a level in barbarian - its a hell of a combo

An optimal Barbarian strategy in an enclosed space is to flex until your muscles crush every enemy against the walls

Now picturing a cinnamon barbarian being spit back out by a dragon. "FOOL, YOU HAVE ENTERED THE CINNAMON CHALLENGE!" as his giant sword is drawn.

@Maximillian Giant spoon

8:06 PM
Above table, "You seriously spent ten gold on cinnamon spice?" "Nothing said I couldn't buy it."
"What are you doing now?" "I am throwing petrified toast at the dragon." ".... I'm sorry, what?" "YOUR CHILDREN WILL KNOW THE TASTE OF CINNAMON TOAST CRUNCH."

@Maximillian As always, magic does it better (rankletaste) :(
Speaking of spice though, I made meatballs last night with 1/4tsp of nutmeg per 1lb ground beef
so good
It makes such a difference, you can even smell it as it cooks

8:23 PM
@Yuuki well, whatever they were planning to do with the baby, probably both the baby and everyone else are better off without them doing that

@doppelgreener That brings up the question of whether the golden ritual sickle is necessary or whether your save-or-die spell constituted a sacrifice for the ritual.

@doppelgreener maybe the cultist holding the baby had just given birth, and the other cultist is a doctor trying to sever the umbilical cord

@doppelgreener Thats some chaotic good logic if I've ever heard it

When in come these jerks, shooting spells everywhere
@SirCinnamon Killing a baby is not CG
It's definitely LE.

@Yuuki aw crud

8:26 PM
@SirCinnamon I think he's a berserker

@SPavel It could probably fall into a few alignments - LE is a good fit too, probably better

@SirCinnamon Killing a baby is Evil, justifying things as "for the greatest good" is Lawful

Eh...

@SPavel Killing a baby is illegal ergo chaotic - Stopping an evil plan is good

I've always felt "for the greater good" is a neutral-leaning-towards-good sentiment rather than a lawful-chaotic sentiment.

8:28 PM
@SirCinnamon Chaos has nothing to do with legal, and stopping an evil plan is at best Neutral.

the real chaotic act is prompting an alignment debate
6

@doppelgreener sits back

hahaha :D

@Yuuki The whole difference between Chaos and Law is that Law favors what is right for the group and the long run

The real chaos is the friends we've made along the way?

8:29 PM
@Yuuki The real Chaos is an end-boss

The real Lawful Good was inside me all along

@SPavel That's never been how I interpreted it.
Lawful and Chaotic are orthogonal to Good and Evil, imo.

@Yuuki That's okay, you still have time to recant.

(Plus, I hate that inertia has left us with "Good" and "Evil".)
@SirCinnamon You might want to go see a doctor about that.

@Yuuki Why, he's a good dude!

8:31 PM
Who knows, maybe the Lawful Good will shatter and then you'll have internal bleeding.
Remember, kids, never buy Lawful Good glass items.

Always use high quality body safe latex

Always use cold iron blessed by the Cardinal himself
Anything less is not guaranteed to be guarded against heresy

@NautArch Naut, did your barbarian friend perchance read this answer?

Remember - the proper term is not "bump uglies" but Smite Evil

@KorvinStarmast haha, nope. But it's pretty crazy as it is.

8:37 PM
@NautArch Yeah, and I am with Nits. I like rolling dice. The tactile feel adds to the fun.

Dice are good, more dice is more better

That's why my table uses the proficiency die variant

I wish I had gotten a chance to play a high level blaster in 3.5 so I could bring one of those dice blocks

Dice with pips or dice with numbers

@SPavel As long as I don't have to add them up. Comparing them with each other or a target number is acceptable.

8:43 PM
This is what computer vision is for.
Roll 30 dice, take a picture, and your phone totals them up for you.

@Anaphory A mid-high level blaster probably shoots 40-60 dice per action, and should have 2-3 actions a turn
And yes, you have to add them up

@SirCinnamon Pips for d6, numbers for all others. I am a traditionalist

@KorvinStarmast are your d10s also 20-sided?

Everyone thought Google's research has been to develop driverless cars but that's only a spin-off. The real end-game is a dice counter app.

@SPavel yes, although I did break down and buy some of those weird ones

8:45 PM
@Yuuki With pips and high contrast dice I bet it would be trivial to code something that could sum your D6s

The original d20s that made you paint in different colors to decide which had 10 added to them were my faves.
When I first bought a d20 that had teens on them, I blanched. It just didn't look right.
The other thing we used to do was roll that unmarked d20, with no paint, and roll a d6. Odd meant standard number, even meant add 10. Painting make it look cooler, though.

@SirCinnamon I don't know, how does your program tell which side is facing up and which side is facing sideways towards the camera

@SPavel I was imagining you hold your phone above the dice

@SirCinnamon Then you cover up the light source!

@SPavel Camera flash

8:49 PM
@SirCinnamon That will just blind your party members

If need be you colour the corners of the dice colour A and the pips colour B for maximum clarity
@SPavel They deserve it

Real D&D is played in a room so dim that even an owl from the Arctic would say "gosh that's a bit tough to see"

The arctic where it's always day or where it's always night?

@SPavel They can roll Dex or Con saves.

"I'm angrier than a long tail cat in a rocking chair factory."

9:01 PM
"Easier than line dancing with a rattlesnake"
I need more colloquialisms - one of those things i want NPCs to do a lot but i dont know enough of myself

@SirCinnamon They don't have to make sense, just pick a thing, and compare it to a vaguely nonsensical situation

"Gerblins? They's WILDER than an old fence!"

@SirCinnamon No, you need two things
Wilder than an old fence on St Martin's Day

"Killin gerblins? That's nastier than church pew in july, by gum"
I actually like this strategy. If you blow through the players wont have time to even think about it
Chopping wood? That's harder than opening a can o beans with a mongoose

9:18 PM
"Back in my day, we had to climb the hill with caltrops carrying an alchemy jug filled with mayonnaise. Backwards!"

"Nobody goes up yonder mountain no more - 'ts more dangerous than pickin your teeth with a wizards favourite wand!"

@Yuuki of course backwards, how else would you do it?

Guys. Does RWBY have it's own system?

@MaikoChikyu There's an official (T)RPG?

TRPG?

9:29 PM
Tabletop Role-Playing Game.

@MaikoChikyu I think there is a card game or something

Hmm.

As far as I'm aware, there's no official TRPG rules.

Well i am looking for a system for it. If it doesn't have one i will probably end up using FATE

So you either find a homebrew system online (or elsewhere) or homebrew it yourself.

9:31 PM
I'm taking off for the weekend - Have a good one everybody!

@MaikoChikyu I can find references to a video game, but no TRPG

Okay. Thanks for trying

Despite RWBY being a very combat-centric show, FATE's probably a good system to use ad-hoc since you can represent a Semblance with an aspect.
Trying to come up with all sorts of language for a unique ability in D&D could get annoying.

hello hello!!
maybe you guys can help me identify a game system (or set of rules)!
I once read an article about a RPG that in character creation characters can choose "truths" about the world, ex: "the cat people from London have a rich history of loving musicals and history, so they create the first bard school, and that from my bard came from!"! And that would be something real in the game world!

9:50 PM
@RafaelSantos That just seems like any table that allows collaborative storytelling

It could be part of a specific game system though.
But I don't know enough systems to be sure.

I've seen explicit call-out in the rules to things like that in Fate, and Apocalypse World and derivatives have a philosophy that is close to it anchored in the rules, but more limited to answers to leading questions from the GM.

10:08 PM
tks, i will take a look at those RPGs!

10:41 PM
@RafaelSantos there's a number of those. Fate has aspects, 13th Age has a One Unique Thing
Letting players engage in world building is something a lot of games have been developing on in the past couple of decades, and some have done it that way
