Players are a team of surgeons who have to operate on the patient while simultaneously holding Death at bay with lucha-libre moves.

have you not been aware of that before?

Ahem. I am vastly impressed by the civility of this stack. The tight moderation and the behaviors that emerge from it just make the entire experience pleasurable and a breath of maturity on the Internet. Thank you to the moderators and regular posters who work to keep it that way.
I'm doing something something I hope doesn't annoy: picking a half-dozen of my favorite quotes from the year-in-chat and re-linking them, hoping to stir up some year-end smiles =)

(I have no patience for 10K+ users berating a 1 point user for not posting enough detail... and not asking for what details to include.)
@trogdor you made the list =)

@nitsua60 how very flattering

Psychologically there's a bump we pass over in learning about a thing, after which it's almost impossible to remember just what it was like to not be aware of the thing.
(but they're just a list of hyperlinks on a scratchpad right now, so I have no idea when you'll pop up!)

@BESW A dragon is attacking your village. Unfortunately, you're a Boring Normal Person and potato won't gather itself. Damn your luck.

I see nothing wrong with comparing myself to a princess, especially if she is being angry, scary, and hilarious all at the same time
=D

@nitsua60 perfffffffect

GODDAMMIT, PAIZO, WAS THE RAPIER-STYLE DUELIST REALLY THAT HARD TO IMAGINE?
(that one ^^ made me lolfigsl)
That's it for me, folks. What-say in a half-day someone else throws some out there =)

ooooh
that would be nice
and require some digging

(P.S. I recommend against starring the re-links I posted, 'cause then they just show up in the star board as the URL. Instead, you can follow the link and star the original message if you feel so inclined.)
@trogdor I was lazy--just went through the messages I'd starred.

12:26 AM
This seems like a fun way to end the year - I'll totally join in when I don't have family stuff going on.

@nitsua60 ah, fair enough
how do you search for stuff you starred yourself?

@trogdor star board->show all 6438->from that page you can select "starred by me"

ah, ok cool
@nitsua60 my top one is the first one you linked XD

@Miniman Spacing 'em twelve hours (or so) seems like it'd give anyone who finds it annoying a bit of a break, and two "slots" per day over six days seems reasonable. And if lots of people want to participate, nothing saying it has to stop on 12/31--"the year that was" would make sense within the first days of January, too.

@nitsua60 yeah, I think I already have a lineup
but I don't want to flood the place

12:36 AM
@nitsua60 -- at least you don't find out about the dragon attacking your farm by way of him running into the power lines feeding you and your neighbor :P
@trogdor that's a common ass-umption at least :p

@Shalvenay whaaaaat???

@nitsua60 :P I've actually wanted to make a poster out of a 3d rendering of a dragon having face-planted into somebody's yard after hitting a set of high-tension lines
(it'd be a safety poster for ag pilots and such who have to deal with that threat on a day-to-day basis)

Yeah, no. I get the concept. I was just wondering what-all it had to do with anything. Then I realized it probably didn't.

2 hours later…

2:45 AM
Merry Christmas everyone!
Personally I think that we should update the wicked leprechaun for 5th edition dnd of possible.

[hat: What's Fire Safety?]
Hello from the flame dimension.
Come with me if you want to be rather toasty.

@Powerdork you sound like my druid from the NWN server I spent quite a while on :P

3:13 AM
@Shalvenay I'll have to hear more about that some other time.

@Shalvenay fair enough
I just saw Die Hard (yes, for the first time, much behind, so wow)

@trogdor as silly as that movie is :P

it was indeed silly
but what christmas movie is not?

1) you need to cart a toolbox out runway side and go wrench on the ILS antenna to make it start flying planes into the ground

and if those exist I don't want to see them
XD

3:23 AM
@Shalvenay Are you thinking of Die Hard 2?

@Miniman oh, I might be :P

They got progressively sillier.
The third one is basically Batman vs the Riddler.

it was still pretty silly
but I have no context for comparison
but seeing as you mentioned a plane going down, gonna say it was not the first one
cause the closest was a helicopter that blew up a little less than it probably should have considering

Accidentally left cookies out for Santana and 6 hours later this guitar solo is still happening.
3

and it was still a smoking husk
it was real fun though

3:26 AM
@trogdor depends on the helicopter

my mom was disgusted by the horrible sexism in it though XD
@Shalvenay nope, depends on the tons and tons of Cfreaking4 that it was two feet from

@trogdor oh, yeah, that :P

lol
I am almost more surprised those extremely stupid FBI guys didn't crash the dang thing first honestly

@trogdor sadly, the real FBI isn't that much smarter at times :/

they were acting like school children who somehow had gained the authority to comandeer a hostage situation
@Shalvenay I hope they are at least a little smarter than that

3:30 AM
@trogdor partly because they're led by a schoolkid-in-chief atm (Comey)

I mean, it looked like the writers just didn't like the police or the FBI very much
and probably the director too

I still want to slap him around with a copy of Applied Cryptography for a good, long while

mk, I think that is enough on that topic for the moment
XD

3:43 AM
@nitsua60 I've saved your favorite comments as a conversation.

nice

3:59 AM
I do want to post my own too, but the 12 hour mark is still quite far from passing so far XD

@trogdor BEST CHRISTMAS MOVIE EVER =)

hehe
it was pretty great
can't deny that

Say what you like, that movie is undeniable. That movie will not be denied. Deny not that movie you will.

I never said I even wanted to :P

4:17 AM
@trogdor You won't. Undeniably.
=D

lol

Also, indubitably.
You cannot dubit it.

I am not arguing with you sir, I don't understand why you have to persist :P

(Really, I'm just killing time while I eat cookies. Gotta keep the fiction going!)

like listening to a song on loop
which I am actually currently doing
XD

4:22 AM
@trogdor indubitably
=)
[wife: why are you smirking at me?]
[me: I'm not smirking at you, I'm smirking at someone in Guam =) ]
7

lol
I have accomplished my task then
amusement that cannot be contained

@trogdor indubitably
[meanwhile, greener just wishes nitsua'd go back to "NEVERTHELESS!"]

4:44 AM
Happy Hogswatch everyone

@nitsua60 Die Hard is, in fact, one of my two traditional Christmas movies (the other being Love Actually)
also, Merry/Happy Christmas to everyone who celebrates it. Have a good December 25 through January 6 to everyone else.
@Adeptus If I'm not mistaken, you're both a few days late and early (the winter solstice and December 32, I believe)

3 hours later…
9:36 AM
@nitsua60 I appreciate it :'D Congratulations

9:53 AM

TIL Abraham Lincoln was once challenged to a duel, and chose giant swords for the weapon so as to terrify his opponent into wanting to call a truce.

When the Spanish first showed up on Guam and started taking the locals' stuff, the locals just rowed out to the ships and started taking stuff from the Spanish.
that should be all of them, don't want to get too carried away

I approve of these.

I wanted that last one to be the last one to lighten things up a little XD

NUmbers 1 & 3 were on my short list, but I wanted to keep below ten... I'm glad to see them here =)

cool, glad it is approved of in that fashion XD
@nitsua60 I also didn't want to do too many, seems like it would be easy to just dump half the things I ever starred in here

1:39 PM
anyway, I was more than happy to contribute to this,... whatever we are calling it XD
star flashback,... thing XD

2:07 PM
Starmas?
2

2:19 PM
Some of them I haven't seen, so it's good to quote them here for everybody's reference!
@Anaphory @BESW Visioning, Networking, Truth-Telling, Loving and Learning, to be precise.

2:54 PM
Looking through my starred messages, I found the star on BotchBlog. I hope that, now that I have people to play with once again, I won't have a lot of botches. But the chance is there!

1 hour later…
4:16 PM
Hmm, my star list doesn't appear to be in strict chronological order...

4:27 PM
I'll dig out and share some stars in a few days. :)

4 hours later…
8:48 PM
@nitsua60 that is a lot better yeah XD

3 hours later…
11:23 PM
@doppelgreener No, it appears to be sorted by stars.

yeah, I think it probably is sorted by number of stars it got

12
A: How does the repositioning of starred messages work?

balphaJust like the "hot questions" on the Q&A sites, it's based on the Hacker News formula. Starred messages are sorted in descending order by Stars ----------- (Age + 2)1.5 where Age is the message age in minutes. So there's indeed a time decay factor (e.g. a 20-minute old message with 5 stars ...

fair enough
a slightly stranger way for it to work than I expected, but I can also certainly see the reasoning behind it
