@keshlam That sounds like either an answer, or an attempt to discuss the issue. Both are not what comments are for, though the former could find a home in an answer post. — SevenSidedDie ♦ 20 mins ago
@SevenSidedDie -- just what was this comment aimed at?? Either it's aimed at GMJoe's comment -- which I already suggested he make into an answer, but he declined as apparently that part of Planescape may not have been ported to 3.x (or he simply doesn't have the 3.x version of that sourcebook), or it's aimed at Keshlam's answer -- which is utter nonsense!

@Shalvenay Presumably a deleted comment you can't see?
If it was aimed at GMJoe's comment, it would start with @ GMJoe.
Also, this sounds exactly like the kind of comment a mod leaves when they delete something.

1:34 AM
@Miniman if it was aimed at anyone else but the person who wrote the answer it was attached to, it'd make sense

2:00 AM
i sent up a custom mod flag saying: "SSD, did you really mean to ping keshlam, the answerer, here? Or did you mean GMJoe?"

ASDKLFAEFLKAJ;DFKL;ASJDFLKAEWFEKLAJFALSKDF
My build is ruined.
Slashing Grace does not work with rapiers because you choose a "light or one-handed slashing weapon".
Which, in hindsight, I should have realized.
But I was desperate to find any sort of DEX to damage option for rapiers without resorting to Rogue.
GODDAMMIT, PAIZO, WAS THE RAPIER-STYLE DUELIST REALLY THAT HARD TO IMAGINE?
4

In 2e, you had rapiers, which do piercing damage, and... (sabers?) which do slashing damage but were otherwise mechanically identical

@Adeptus sounds about right?
@doppelgreener thx!

YOU HAVE FIVE GAJILLION WAYS TO CAST SPELLS, BUT OH NO WE CAN'T LET MUNDANES FLIT AROUND THE BATTLEFIELD WITH A FLIMSY POKE SWORD.
@Adeptus Sabers are for cavalrymen.

> In 2e the sabre was a light slashing weapon favored by swashbucklers using single weapon prof. Now in 3.5e PHB and FRCS the sabre is listed as a long heavy sword specilized for mounted use
> Problem is the term Saber/Sabre is used to several different sword types.
Because there were Calvary Sabres, which was basically a type of Longsword.
There were Fencing Sabres, a Heavy "Rapier" used for slashing.

2:12 AM
Fencing sabres were never used in combat though.

You expect historical accuracy from D&D/PF?

No, I'd like to be able to make a rapier build without having to resort to Rogue though.

2:30 AM
I'd ask your GM if you can use a fencing sabre (= "slashing rapier")

I doubt it will fly. The group seems somewhat strict on their reading of the rulebooks.

Are you or your group not open to re-fluffing? Keep the mechanics but say you're using a rapier?

@Yuuki Paizo is notorious for totally shafting martial classes unfortunately

Also, the Holy Gun archetype seems completely non-functional.
You get a Gunslinger deed at 2nd level but you don't get grit points to spend on it until 11th level.

3:04 AM
@doppelgreener just continuing in the sad tradition of 3.x

@Shalvenay That doesn't really make sense - martials got better stuff in 3.5 as time went by.

@Yuuki Paizo is also a little notorious for having sabotaged gunslingers, because they didn't want to make them - at least, according to the author I'm linking to, who writes for a third party publisher who publishes for Pathfinder, and who's deeply connected into the Pathfinder scene as a result.

I think I might have to settle for a Paladin/Gunslinger multiclass if I want to be Shepherd Book.

@Miniman it is true that WotC wizened up a bit re: martials as 3.5 went on, but I believe (correct me if I'm wrong!) that Paizo forked 3.5 to create PF fairly early on, before things like Tome of Battle were published

@Shalvenay I wasn't just talking about ToB - even PHB II had far more powerful martial options than were included in Core.

3:14 AM
@Yuuki If your group's amenable to reflavouring, you may be happier working with a hand crossbow mechanically rather than a gun.

@Miniman ah. as in feats and such, or more classes even? (I'm not familiar with the extra PHB/MM/DMG material)

I don't mean to wail on Paizo since I have very little beef with them, but I do mean to point out where you may be dealing with a minefield.

@Shalvenay I was thinking of feats, but that too. More importantly, PHB II isn't "extra" PHB material, it's an entirely separate sourcebook in the same vein as the Complete series.

(Just so happens Paizo has a lot of those spread around the various parts of Pathfinder's design.)

@Miniman ah. talk about a misleading title...

3:18 AM
Like, myself, I'd really like to try the gunslinger. Except the 1/20 chance of my weapon breaking, the ease with which a bit of water disables my class's primary feature (but nobody else's), and the high expense of playing one, kinda makes them not viable in my eyes.

I'm just haphazardly fumbling through character concepts.
I had originally planned a Dr. Frankenstein-like Chirurgeon/Reanimator Alchemist, but someone said they were planning on making a Chirurgeon, so there went that idea.

Rapier dex fighter went down like the Hindenburg.
@doppelgreener They're strong because they target touch AC.
But there's the problems like you listed above. If they do run into those conditions (rare as they may be), they're kinda boned.
I might try an Unchained Rogue.

@Yuuki I've always wondered how far Unchained swings the magic vs mundane/martial pendulum...
(and in which direction, of course ;)

Apparently, Unchained fixed a number of the problems with Rogue and Monk (but depending on who you ask didn't go far enough in terms of buffing) and made a much-needed nerf to the Summoner.

3:35 AM
@Yuuki hrm.

Hmm... should I try Skald?

well, Monk needed fixing, Rogue in base 3.x probably had problems but was serviceable...but what about the rest of the martial world?
@Yuuki :notsure: the only Skald I've ever seen is the 2e version, and that was a monster of a character

@Shalvenay Rogue wasn't serviceable, we all just pretended that it was.

Reading through the description, I can turn my party members into barbarians.
I wonder if the GMs will let me enrage allies by playing Friday?

@Yuuki LOL

3:42 AM
@Yuuki Friday: 5th level Bard spell. Everyone who hears your invigorating music activates the Barbarian's Rage, even if they aren't Barbarians. A Barbarian instead activates Greater Rage. If they already have that, they enter Mighty Rage.

3:54 AM
@Miniman hahaha!
(I do know that 3.x rogues are lousy soloists, though. DOn't ask me how.)

@doppelgreener * targeted against the bard

Ugh, I can't find a character concept that's interesting me.

@Yuuki yeah, I know the feeling at times :/

@Shalvenay Scouts may be slightly better. They get many rogue-like abilities, but are a bit tougher

Duelist was simple, but I had conjured up a whole backstory and everything.

3:58 AM
@Adeptus yeah, although not quite what I'm used to for a tough, tenacious forward scout...;)

Hmm... Shield Champion archetype?
Ugh, I don't want to mess with Flurry.
I think I might try a bloodrager.

@Shalvenay I hadn't realised just how bad they are until someone introduced me to the Same Game Test, forcing me to scrap a build I'd been working on for a while.

@Adeptus Apocalypse World features a character type that can try to defuse a bad situation by having everyone go back to their lives, but if they fail, the whole mob just collectively turns on them instead.

@Adeptus (although I'm probably terribly spoiled in that regard...)

Oh. Oh my.
I might try Steelblood/Crossblood Bloodrager.
This looks appealing.

4:11 AM
Ooo. What's that one like?
What catches your eye about it?

Wear heavy armor, have two bloodline powers.
And I'm leaning towards Aberrant/Destined.
Get bigger and have an aura of greatness when you enrage.
Cast arcane spells in heavy armor without incurring spell failure.
Although your selection is somewhat limited.

Those sound like fun combinations.

4:34 AM
Hmm... Greataxe or Halberd?
1d12 v 1d10 with brace and trip.

Brace relies on a readied action against a charge, are you likely to use that?

I dunno. I'm just being cautious since a GM recently used a charge attack to great effect.

I'd be a fan of 1d10 plus the ability to trip some fools, provided I'm willing to get Improved Trip or I'm otherwise confident I'll be able to use it reasonably effectively.

Eh, I'll use d12 Greataxe for now. I can always switch it out later.

4:55 AM
Worrying realization: the misunderstanding implicit in this question is actually my fault, stemming from my answer to this question.

@Yuuki It's not have two bloodline powers, it's choose one of two bloodline powers
Gives you a bit more flexibility in your build, but I'm not sure it's worth the drawbacks, personally.

I definitely want Aberrant but that 1st-level power is kinda balls.
The penalty to Will is definitely dangerous.
Especially since bloodragers inherit that low Will save and Wisdom isn't particular important to them.

@Yuuki In some ways, once you've got that double dump, you may as well ignore penalties to a Will save when considering future options - you're going to fail all your Will saves anyway, so there's no point caring about it anymore.

And I do hope the GMs exercise enough restraint to not mind-control my character into killing everyone else. That's just bad feelings all around.

Rubbish item idea:

5:10 AM
@Yuuki yeesh. that'd be bad.

> Tinfoil cap: Your character will never be mind controlled. At least, they think so, as long as they're wearing their trusty cap. You get +5 to resist mind controlling effects attempted upon you. Others will take a -5 to attempts to overcome any successful mind controlling effects placed upon you. (Worn on the head, but doesn't occupy the head slot.)

@Yuuki'sGM: can't you find anything better to do with mind control than a TPK?
@doppelgreener harhar

@Shalvenay It is very tempting though.

Last time I mind-controlled a PC, I had him walk straight into the monster's mouth.
...where he jerry-rigged the engine of the tank the monster had eaten earlier in battle, and with a little help from outside exploded the monster from the inside out.

I wouldn't mind so much if it was an IRL group of friends, but it's a recipe for disaster when it comes to a bunch of faceless names over the Internet.
Has a much higher chance of turning into real spite and circles of revenge.

5:25 AM
If you feel there's a pretty good chance the GM could do this, might be worthwhile having a chat with them along the lines of "I'm picking a character who's going to have a low will defence, and I can't avoid that. Having such an important defense so low is pretty scary. What should I expect might happen? Can I get your assurance they probably won't be mind-controlled to kill everyone, since that'd probably suck for all of us?"

5:50 AM
Is it just me or have we had this low will save/mindcontrol issue come up before where DM was basically going to TPK with it?

Yup. It's not uncommon.
Some GMs have the attitude that if a player chooses to have a low defence, they're asking for it to be exploited.

6:10 AM
And sometimes the same GM has the idea that the GM's job is to try to kill absolutely every player character, and the players' job is to stop that from happening.

6:28 AM
@doppelgreener We had a GM who let us almost all get killed by one player's stupidity, but had one PC "left for dead", who could get the rest of us resurrected.

In my days as a DM (rather than a GM) I was generally of the "don't get in the way of player stupidity" mindset.

We had another GM who ran games in a kungfu/horror vein, and made us aware beforehand that we could expect at least some of the PCs to die. (mine, in the first session...)
He took inspiration from various horror/supernatural anime, and live-action films such as Chinese Ghost Story.

Though there was one close call... One of our players always wanted to be a ladies man (IC & OOC)... In this particular game, we were all Elves except for a human Paladin. We'd just come back from a dungeon crawl & head to the inn to divide the loot.
(story continues from there)

Morning all
Is there a fan made list of GMC virtues and vicrs?

user61230
I am confused

@Emrakul GMC = god-machine chronicles the 2.0 update for nWoD

Oh. I was hoping for Grand Moff Cosplays.

nWoD = new world of darkness

user61230
7:05 AM
That definitely helps clarify!

user61230
I was very confused, mostly because of the third message xD

@Emrakul no idea what I was saying

user61230
ehehe fair enough!

Hey guys, in 5E what would be equivalently as strong a boost to physical fighting classes as allowing spellcasters a type of multiattack

@AncientSwordRage Sounds like a worthwhile question

7:09 AM
@doppelgreener bwah?! but it's a list

user61230
@user507974 A third arm!

user61230
But in all seriousness, you're going to be hard-pressed to come up with something that feels realistic.

lol
the only gripe i have is that it doesnt increase versatility

user61230
At some point, if magic is buffed, you cannot help but make melee either unrealistic or underpowered.

@AncientSwordRage You're asking for someone to point you to a compiled list of features, like I asked to be pointed to a compiled list of the events of Points of Light's history. Neither of us are asking for someone to create that list, and not every answer will be equally valid.

7:11 AM
i have a world where everybody in theory can practice magic
and everybody in the beginning of the game is going learn 1 cantrip, some physical augmentation types, others kind of elemental and environmental manipulation

@doppelgreener OK maybe after breakfast

user61230
That sounds alright, depending on the strength of elemental/environmental manipulation. Where do your balance concerns come in, @user507974?

well everybody gets that, so technically it is a bit more of a boost for fighter classes as well as spellcasting, so i feel like maybe i still shafted them a bit
my bad
meant to say a more significant boost for fighters than spellcasters
(by fighters i mean physical fighting classes)
so like its +2 physical guy +1 spellcasting ,
but the multiattack is like a +3 to spellcasters if you know what i mean

user61230
So, just to make sure I understand the problem, you're giving all the players some basic magical boosts, and are additionally giving spellcasters a multiattack, and are thus concerned about the relative balance of power?

yea
the multiattack expends spellslots
so its not completely unmitigated boost

user61230
7:21 AM
Yeah, that's a real problem. I'm gonna go back to my initial comment... if you boost magic enough, you either have to accept that magic is much more powerful than physical combat, or drop the realistic/gritty feeling of physical combat.

user61230
Are there other compensatory buffs you could give to magic?

you mean physical combatants? magic is kinda in the lead already
oh, one thing though is ive pulled in the reigns on magic in some ways, magic is more grounded in reality, so conjuration and necromancy are heavily cut
so ive kinda closed off those two schools for wizards
and a lot of the magic is kinda getting the theism of it athiestified

user61230
Hmm. The breadth of these changes leads me to ask why they're being made...

You could look at the way Warlocks Eldritch blast is setup, if it costs spell slots to activate say a ray of frost multi attack, could be viable.
Mages technically already have multi attack for spell slots in the way of AOE spells

OH, my bad, I didnt clarify multi-attack, I meant it as in literal physical attacks
basically they expend a spellslot to more or less do something like a whirlwind attack with reach
max number of enemies hit equivalent to expended spell slot

7:30 AM
better off casting a spell
spells do more damage

user61230
What is your goal in making these changes?

the spell changes were something of a flavor change for my world
im a physicist, so ive wanted to explore a not so distant magic system
underneath the hood, all the magic is probability manipulation
theres more to the system than that but thats it in a sentence

so a fireball is actually the odds of there being a propane tank that blows up in the area?

or rather, the player exchanges energy with the environment, oxygen in the air condenses around a point and they provide a final spark

user61230
Is D&D/5e the right system to do what you're trying to do?

7:34 AM
there isnt really a right system for it
from what ive seen
and my friends knew 5e

user61230
That's fair.

user61230
On the other hand, though, it's going to be an uphill climb

id agree on that end
but its fun too have your own system in place
to have*
and i kind of want to create a system where players are really encouraged to be creative
in a system like this a player in essence really has a reason to interact with their environment, and if they aren't originally creative my enemies are going to show them what creative spellcasting is like

user61230
Sure, yeah! If you presented a foreign system to your player group, do you think they'd go for it?

user61230
Or do you think they'd really rather stick with 5e?

7:39 AM
luckily none of us are way too attached to the exact details of 5e

user61230
That is pretty lucky. I've known a number of player groups who are pretty averse to newfangled things.

so if i tell them theyre spell list is shortened here but in game they have a big trove of potential discoveries theyll be fine with it
only 1 player is lazy and luckily hes a barbarian

user61230
Heh, neat.

well, actually hes always a barbarian because he doesnt wanna take time to learn magic

If you want a system that encourages people to be creative and interact with the enviroment then Fate/FAE is a good place to go look

user61230
7:41 AM
Since it sounds like you're stuck with 5e for the time being, it's really important to acknowledge that 5e is a system with a lot of cross-interacting knobs. If you turn one, three fall out of balance. Try to correct any of those, and three more fall out of balance.

user61230
What I'm getting at is this: you can only turn so many knobs before it's going to be nearly impossible to bring things realistically back into balance.

user61230
I'm not totally sure 5e is pliant enough to capture what you're going for.

user61230
That being said, if you limit the goals of your changes to something smaller, there's a much better chance of getting it to work right.

yea, thats why ive tried to make any changes the type that operate using the same mechanisms that were already in place
and I'm going to gauge the first few games to really figure out if there is anything lacking
because you can sort of soft-adjust those factors in the background
through planning

user61230
ahhh, sure

user61230
7:49 AM
okay, now I'm seeing why you're going with these changes >_>

user61230
Okay, so, what are the primary set of changes you want to make?

user61230
Wait, nevermind, you've answered that. (I'm a little distracted >_>)

user61230
Okay, going to go back to one of my first questions, sorry. Are there any other options you can see for rebalancing spellcasting?

well, would you say that the large decrease in those world breaking powers counts
spellcasting is a more economical, so outside combat a lot of those crazy bonuses spellcasters have in high levels dissappear

user61230
how so?

8:01 AM
in vanilla: a necromancer could walk around with a horde of thralls, another mage could teleport massive distances, a warlock could basically turn a person into a puppet, if you were met with a millenia old riddle you could resurrect the architect
here you are in some ways on a far more similar footing as the fighter
you cant really just cheat in a solution
so its sort of a decent balance outside combat
@Emrakul you know what i mean, so far spellcasters see an increase in combat options but in exchange are sort of put back in the real world with the rest of the party outside combat

user61230
Hmm... now I'm a little lost. It sounds like that takes away many of the powerful features of being a spellcasting class in 5e?

user61230
I understand what you mean, I'm just not sure how it fits together.

they have plenty of powerful features still in the mix, but what i mean is that some of the most abusable and unbalanced features kind of disappear

user61230
How does this solve the original problem where they're slightly underpowered in comparison to fighting classes?

Uh, looking back, I said fighting classes might be underpowered in combat

user61230
8:11 AM
...wow, no wonder I've been confused.

user61230
I think I was going on this message:

user61230
56 mins ago, by user507974
meant to say a more significant boost for fighters than spellcasters

oh, i meant there that an extra cantrip is more beneficial to a fighter than spellcaster, so it was an attempt to help physical fighters get back to even
sorry for the confusion

user61230
Oh, man, I'm really lost. I thought that was one of the core changes.

yea

user61230
8:13 AM
No worries, it's pretty much my fault >_>

i could see how that made everything following confusin

user61230
Okay, just to make sure we're on the same page (sorry again), which change is the tonal change?

spellcasters get this:
Whirlwind: By expending a spellslot, they can use the Whirlwind Attack multiattack ("Whirlwind Attack. Vou can use your action to make a melee attack against any number of creatures within 5 feet of you, with a separate attack roIl for each target.") with reach (+5 feet). The number of extra enemies they attack is up to the level of the spell slot they expend.
With maybe the option that if you choose to only hit 1 enemy you can hit it twice (by using a 1st level or higher spellslot)

user61230
Okay, that's the only major change?

thats the only major change besides the magic system alterations (almost no conjuration, necromancy, and some less illusion/divination)

user61230
8:23 AM
Aha. Alright! Things are clearer now!

user61230
Is there a tonal reason why the method for balancing it out was to give fighters cantrips/basic magic?

i figured that this type of balance gave players a big boost in flexibility, so a a physical combat person should get a boost that similarly improves flexibility
and also it fits with the world, where everyone has the ability to practice magic

user61230
Hmm... I think the second could actually be a stronger argument than the first.

I've had breakfast

Q: Is there a fan maintained list of god-machine chronicles virtues and vices?

PureferretGMC opens the door for a much wider selection of virtues and vices the new World of Darkness. The rules update moves away from cardinal sins and virtues, the book then lists a handful of each. I'm confident I've seen a longer list compiled somewhere, but my Google-fu is weak. Can someone hel...

Still too early for good question writing, have at it copy-edit pirahnas

@AncientSwordRage lol
but yea,
it was motivated originally by the second point, with the first point in mind

user61230
8:37 AM
hmm

user61230
I'm not actually sure there's that distinct of a balance issue

user61230
Fighter versatility has always been low in D&D: "Go hit the thing with your hitting-stick."

fighter, monk, barbarian, rogue in general dont have this available to them though

@Emrakul I have a vague memory of a web comic about the "warrior problem" in games - hit range for the monster begin always much larger than your, so by the time you got near the boss, you was already dead.
I can't find it now.... sigh

tabletop comics are the best
I just found Darth and Droids a week or two ago

user61230
8:56 AM
urgh, read a House of Leaves quote, brain locked up thinking on it

user61230
Anyway, @user507974, I think what you're trying to do runs counter to the assumptions D&D is built on. It might be possible to morph the game into something closer to what you're looking for, but it's not a problem that can be, strictly speaking, solved. (At least in my opinion.)

9:25 AM
@user507974 Yay! Love it.
(Make sure to click the link in #50.)

@Anaphory where is that link

Comic 50, in the Annotation: The Comic Irregulars exist and are making a screencap comic based on Harry Potter.

How to build a spaceship with D&D d20 rules without resorting to Teleportation or Wish spells:

Good morning

2:43 PM
Morning

I contest this notion

So I found a way to completely negate the extremely low Will save that Crossblooded gives using only traits.

@Yuuki Oh wow. What'd you find?

@doppelgreener - Or rather "Good evening" for you. :)

> Half-orc racial trait Sacred Tattoo: +1 luck bonus on all saving throws, replaces orc ferocity.
> Trait Fate's Favored: Whenever you are under the effect of a luck bonus of any kind, that bonus increases by 1.
> Indomitable Faith: You gain a +1 trait bonus on Will saves.
My saves are now: Fort +6, Ref +3, Will +2.
At 1st-level.
Actually, I might need to remove Indomitable Faith.
Since it and Fate's Favored are both Faith traits.

2:51 PM
blah vga to RCA with old laptop and old pc
SO COMPLICATED
cant wait to get a new tv after christmas
live in the future
playing that 4e?

Replacing Indomitable Faith with Armor Expert still leaves me with a Will save of +1.
Which is pretty good considering that Crossblooded would've left me with -2. Or -1.
... Why did I repost that here?

Not bad.

I think the D&D spaceship idea would be fun in a campaign where the PCs have to escape a world overrun by evil, maybe by flying to a habitable satellite moon.

3:17 PM
It'd have to be a long-term campaign. The trick would be letting the PCs figure out how to build the ship on their own, without too many suggestions from the DM. Maybe the PCs stumble upon bits & pieces of the construction plans in the ruins of a long dead wizard's laboratory. And you'd need the right set of players who wouldn't feel that building a spaceship is fun and not an excruciating homework problem. ;)

4:03 PM
Patton Oswalt & Felicia Day joining the MST3K reboot, woohoo!

3 hours later…
6:37 PM
@RobertF You'd also need a way to convince the PCs to build the spaceship and not get sidetracked by fighting the evil dudes.

@Yuuki - Right - the planet would have to be swarming with so many Orcs, zombies, whatever led by powerful bosses that a TPK is all but certain if the PCs try to stick it out.

Ugh, I really can't decide whether I want the Steelblood archetype or not.
Uncanny Dodge is sooo attractive but so is being a raging metal fortress.

Of course the PCs could use the spaceship as a mobile artillery platform instead...

@Aaron the typeface looks the same, hopped on waybackwhen to look at it from feb this year
there were a bunch of other UI changes though
those may just make some things stand out more
