@BESW this is similar to some things we were talking about in Not a Bar, I am watching Fullmetal Alchemist, and several people mentioned that the version I am watching is less true to the Manga,...
I am still enjoying this version of it, probably partly because I never read the manga, but I don't see a reason why I can't then watch the Brotherhood version and then compare after
that doesn't invalidate that some people just prefer Brotherhood, but it also shouldn't mean I am wrong for wanting to watch this version first because I am enjoying it so far
(The FMA manga had an anime series produced while the manga still was half complete. The original anime series independently invented its own second half, and therefore almost all the deepest parts of the plot, and explored that on its own and went its separate way from the manga. Then there was FMA: Brotherhood which told the manga's story.)
mm
and there is nothing wrong with that in my book
credit where credit is due for also making a version that is actually following the mange much more closely
I agree. They did a good job in the first series, and had a compelling plot worth some praise in its own right.
@trogdor the name "Brotherhood" is meant to imply that close connection :)
a lot of people, I am sure, wanted that, and heck, I am sure a lot of people wanted that for other manga based anime that never got it
It follows the manga much more closely in that it follows the manga completely as opposed to diverging very thoroughly, haha
07:12
@doppelgreener ah ok, I was not aware of that reasoning behind the name
I reminds me of Hellsing.
I thought it was just because the story was literally about two brothers
@trogdor it's one of those double entendres
@doppelgreener This happens a lot with anime adaptations.
@doppelgreener well, I didn't have any way to know that XD (not saying you thought I did of course) XD
07:13
@Pixie like Soul Eater!
When series was something "based on" original manga. And then they made OVAs series, which follows closely to manga.
@trogdor This is a fairly succinct summary of why my feelings on the issue are so strong.
@doppelgreener Yes.
@Miniman mhmm I can certainly understand that
@trogdor Doppel's mention of Soul Eater particularly.
and my intent is just to make sure no one thinks I think an opinion of that variety is stupid or something like that
07:15
@trogdor I'm still scrambling to justify my kneejerk reaction the other day :)
just because I like the version I happen to have started with, and have so far had a much easier time finding under the parameters I prefer, does not mean I think it is silly that you vastly prefer Brotherhood
@RollingFeles Hellsing had a different problem - it followed the original manga fairly closely, but with the pacing of a turtle and the pinache of a wilted stalk of asparagus. The OVA just had the right pace and style.
@doppelgreener It started reasonably well, but...yeah.
@Miniman it's cool, I don't take offence to it, you have a clearly strong opinion on the subject, and your intent was not to offend me in some way
You could compare the scene where Alucard fights the vampire brother in the cellar and unleashes his familiars and so on. It is exhilarating in the OVA, but the series makes it as thrilling as a wet biscuit. They didn't know what they were doing with it, had all the wrong staff working on the animation.
07:18
Heh. What bothers me is when it gets reduced to "close adaptation = good, loose adaptation/adaptation with original content = bad," but I totally understand having strong feelings about it or preferring one method or the other. I often prefer closer adaptations myself.
3
@doppelgreener AFAIK ending of the series went full improvisation.
@RollingFeles I must not have seen the ending then!
@Pixie I wouldn't want it to be put that way either, to be fair, but I don't quite feel Miniman was saying that exactly
I watched it, OVAs(though without last few films) and read full manga(because I couldn't bear to wait another OVA). OVAs follow manga almost in every detail.
or at least wasn't trying to put it that way
07:20
@trogdor Yeah, I think we got that clarified.
Still, I enjoyed every piece of work, regardless of it's trueness to canon.
The one show I can think of that I really, really prefer to the manga is Rozen Maiden, minus its ending. I guess they were leaving it open for another season that it didn't get..? But it did what I describe as "driving off a cliff."
and, I have overheard, or even been dragged into (completely confused), conversations where people were mad that an anime never got a closer adaptation to a manga
even at the low number of anime I have seen and the novice amount of anime knowledge I have, I have already been aware for a while that some people have strong opinions on this specific thing, so I feel easily able to be pretty understanding about it.
@Pixie close adaption = what fans wanted, loose adaption with OC = fans who recognise they're not going to get the close adaption and are reasonably upset about that. Also potentially fans who consider the original material sacrosanct and the OC therefore besmirching it for virtue of being there, sometimes.
With that anima/manga topic, I've remembered that I still miss Lelouch a bit, even though ending were perfect. :) But all hopes for another Code Geass are pointless.
07:23
since I generally dont read mangas, it does only tangentially concerns me.
I have a friend who doesn't like Rebuild of Evangelion just because the characters have different development in it and she liked the original development.
But its basically the same with other works of literature, that gets either movie or series adaptation
@doppelgreener Again, I totally understand that and have been there myself. xD
@RollingFeles I watched Code Geass, and enjoyed it a great deal, but still find it completely mystifying and impossible to understand.
A friend of mine understands it (apparently) and has tried to explain it to me, but it hasn't really taken.
I dont know, I found Code Geass really awesome at the beginning, but the closer it got towards regular mecha, it got a bit confusing what I was watching there...
07:25
@Miniman I think when I watched it second time with my gf, several years later after first one, I started to understand it fully. It's pretty beautiful, not flawless of course, but I enjoyed it much more than Death Note.
@Pixie just articulating
@DoomedMind Interesting, I followed the mecha fine, but found the...philosophical? parts confusing.
@doppelgreener I see!
Which also summarises my reaction to Neon Genesis Evangelion, now that I think about it.
@Miniman no, Mecha per se is fine, but in the beginning, it seemed to be less about the usual super-individual super-power mechs but more about intrigue and tactics.
07:28
@DoomedMind well, for me, it wasn't about mecha. In the most cases mecha's confrontation outcome were decided base on shenanigans other characters done. Preparation, technology, plan.
@DoomedMind Ah, yeah. I followed this pretty well too, but I can definitely see how it could be confusing.
@Miniman I htought it was something too rarely seen in anime, especially with the rather limited "superpower" of the geass lelouch had.
Which was what originally drew me to it
@DoomedMind have you watched it till the end?
@RollingFeles yes, but this technology prep shenanigans is just the same as in every other mecha, just under a different premise
@RollingFeles no. I watched the first couple of episodes of the second season, then got bored.
@DoomedMind I agree. I think it's was the way to balance Lelouch's powers and strategy.
07:34
I couldn't really get into Code Geass. It's been a while since I tried, though.
Back when it was airing on TV. Man, it's been forever.
@RollingFeles yeah. But I think, it could have been fantastic even when they abandoned the classic mecha genre tropes. I mean, its still a story of a small group trying to overcome great institutional power.
There is a lot of drama. A well placed drama. With all these intrigues and shenanigans forms a reason why I love this anime. Mecha's added it's own flavor, but I didn't care a lot about them.
Are you guys more scared of:
-a person who makes decisions based on emotions only and thus acts on impulse
-a person who makes decisions through careful thought and negates all emotions
07:51
probably the former @JesterTran
I deem either unlikely though
@DoomedMind Not sure what I would pick, lol. I've met some impulsive people and they are scary... they do what feels good and don't care about the consequences
@JesterTran the former, because that's what we call a psychotic lunatic. They're also more inclined to form emotional bonds and will, in turn, trample on them or be abusive. The people who discard emotion can at least be reasoned with and is being reasonable, but if they're discarding other's emotions their calculation process is flawed.
@JesterTran The third option - the person who takes emotions into account in their emotionless reasoning.
Wait, are we talking about in the context of a random person, or someone who is in some way working against us?
Such a person is what we may call a philosopher, actually. Logical reasoning that takes all factors (including emotion) into account while being capable of producing a decision independent of one's emotions about then is an important life skill. One's actions need to pay responsible attention to one's own emotional needs though.
@Miniman I took it as random person.
@doppelgreener I think I met a lunatic while withdrawing money from the ATM at night. He was calm while trying to withdraw money then as he exited 3m away from the ATM, he began going on a rage and screaming which included insults and profanity towards someone
07:59
That is what we call an unstable person.
@doppelgreener Yeah, I guess I mentally substituted "villain" in for person - I don't tend to be scared of random people. In the context of villains, the ability to take emotions into account enables manipulating people, and manipulative villains are definitely the scariest.
@doppelgreener That's... not what psychotic means.
@doppelgreener Yeah, that's what I was getting at for my question but may have failed and made it too general
@Pixie well no, I guess not and I'm not trying to be totally correct and accurate here, but having met a number of people far over-invested in their emotions over logical reasoning, I would call such people fairly unhinged from reality.
@JesterTran it was definitely fairly general.
@doppelgreener Yeah, question was poorly crafted!
08:02
@JesterTran Thinking about it, the previous topic being Lelouch probably influenced my interpretation :)
@JesterTran VTC unclear what you're asking! :)
@RollingFeles What's VTC?
Vote To Close.
@RollingFeles lol
I admit that if I was immune from any pain, I would escalate that person's emotions to see what happens. What theoretically would happen if someone would be so angry that they turn uncontrollable? Implosion?
@doppelgreener That's a pretty different sense of "unhinged from reality," though. It made me go, "Wait, what?" The word "psychotic" has a pretty specific meaning, although I do acknowledge that it gets used outside that context a lot. I think I also reacted a bit because there's a ton of misinformation about those disorders out there, including that such people are more likely to be violent or abuse others. (In fact, they're more likely to be abused.)
08:11
@JesterTran It depends on a person, I think. Not everyone turns uncontrollable when emotions bursts out of them. Someone rage in vain, just to unload their emotions. It's not a rare thing to see agressive and raging person after couple of minutes lying down in tears. Someone may cool down, seeing that stranger started to interact with them and realizing that they behave unappropriate they can calm down a bit and leave.
You see, to lose temper and express emotions is easy thing to do. But to lose all control is a hard limit.
@Pixie Alright. I don't know that meaning, but "unhinged from reality to an unhealthy extent that's impairing their ability to operate" is the sense I'm using it in. Meanwhile I presently know a deeply emotional person who's very subtly self-destructively manipulative and uses tactics which strongly resemble what we might say are the foundation of abusive relationships.
If we take raging beyond control, I think the most common way would be dealing as much damage and destruction as person can. Just to release their anger, to spend it with energy and cool down with emotional satisfaction from destructions.
We are after all not talking about an emotional person but someone whose decisions are based entirely on emotion and not logic, per the question posed.
Yeah, the proposed theoretical states are not anything which exists in reality.
@doppelgreener Psychotic refers to psychosis, which is losing touch from reality, but in the sense of hallucinations, delusions, catatonia, and disorganized speech/thought.
08:21
I highlighted such outcomes. Extreme case when only emotions rule over person will contain this, just without restrictions. With emotion birth person expirience urge. Anger - to hurt and destroy, Joy - to laugh, to share it, Sadness - to feel pity and feel other's compassion. Our mind, well, "logic part" will enforce boundaries. Remove it and person will try to satisfy their urge as soon as possible and as hard as they can.
Can anyone aid me in dividing this question: into separate parts as I have been advised to do? rpg.stackexchange.com/questions/78844/…
@PeterDavidCarter As a first step you may want to separately ask that question about Asmodeus BESW first mentioned which is easily enough dealt with and will clear that out of the way.
@Pixie [learns some things]
@doppelgreener Yay! :) Yeah, so that's why I was like ?????
@doppelgreener I'd love to see Raycia and @Pixie get together some time.
will do
wait, what does 'is a part of Asmodeus' past history and he is plausibly a misunderstood God within Cannon?' mean? Is this a complete sentence? I'm confused
08:26
@PeterDavidCarter BESW was just copy/pasting parts of your own question verbatim.
yeah, but I can't ask part of a sentence on it's own; it wouldn't make any sense
Hello!
@PeterDavidCarter That is literally written at the end of your second last paragraph. I guess you made an editorial error?
@eimyr Hi!
> Supplementary question: during an extremely long campaign can I have the players redeem Asmodeus, given:

"After eons of fighting creatures from the abyss, Asmodeus and some of his fellows began to change. They grew similar in appearance and methods to the demons which they fought. Afraid of his power and of the changes he had undergone, the gods put Asmodeus on trial and demanded that he be cast out of the Upper Planes. However, he argued effectively (and correctly) that he and his fellows had not violated the law. Asmodeus and his followers successfully sued for access to the Upper Plan
Which simplifies to:
08:27
ok, makes more sense
Asmodeus is not a simple Deity
> Can I have the players redeem Asmodeus?
oh, yeah, there we go
@BESW Raycia's one of your players, correct? I recall you mentioning her a few times.
Palor is pretty dumb though
yes and no
Also, point of order, the word you're looking for is "canon", one N in the middle. "Cannon" refers to the large heavy instrument used to launch heavy projectiles.
08:28
like really stupid
Which is trivially answerable "yes, of course, your group can do whatever it likes."
So you'll want to phrase the question in relation to established setting conventions.
(Also last time I checked it's Pelor.)
@Pixie Yep. She's played a computer genius, and now she's playing a super lucky super spy.
not when Asmodeus has his way it's not
08:29
haha
Hey guys :)
@Pixie She just got a BA in psych.
yo
The spelling Palor is actually pretty neat, because I can use emphasis to call him Pal-or.
@BESW I see! I don't know that much myself, just cursory stuff.
08:30
@eimyr I refined my Gods game! I took out the point scoring and everything became much more affable
cool
I didn't even see the point scoring but still, well done!
we made a flower of life, and populated it with whirlpool creatures
Hi @Polyducks
Hey @DoomedMind :)
I see you had fun with your idea :)
08:31
@Polyducks I have an idea, one that's just for you.
ooh
Just for me?
@Polyducks Ya'll know what a mind map is?
Thanks everyone for the interesting answers and extended discussions! ^_^
Like a brainstorm?
@JesterTran sorry to have interrupted!
the vibes are too strong here; I need to go
bye
08:32
later!
@Polyducks you should try making a flower of liff
It's a tool for brainstorming yes, a way to represent where brainstormed idea come from etc.
@Polyducks you didn't interrupt anything, discussion terminated a short while ago :)
@JesterTran It'll 'be back'.
@Polyducks Have your Gods players represent their rules in a hierarchical way, using a Mind Map as your tree of world rules.
08:34
How would that work?
@eimyr I can see how it would work for in-universe actions.
You could see the development of the universe
State of BESW's mind post-taxes: Turning on the wrong burner and wondering why the onion isn't browning.
@Polyducks Yay
@Anaphory yeah, you were right :) It became a much more tranquil game after removing points. It became much more RP based and my players really sunk into it
@BESW that's hilarious
So far I've played Rubiux, God of Law and Lisbethae, Goddess of the incomprehensible
Goddess of the incomprehensible is an interesting role because I throw spanners into the works for the other players to interpret and dramatically changes the predictability of the universe
I'd've thought the Goddess of the Incomprehensible would be named Colorless Green Ideas Sleep Furiously.
...No Noam Chomsky fans here tonight? Tough crowd.
@BESW At least you realized eventually. Take what victories you can.
08:42
@BESW I get the reference
@BESW i get it. I like Chomsky, but I'm not sure I'm a fan.
shrugs
I made time flow backwards and made it so only rules with an even amount of characters could be accepted
I mean, I'm a computer scientist, how can I not like him?
or at least his works :D
@Polyducks that does make it a bit tedious though, does it not?
@Polyducks I'd say you could think up a game that has a nifty world creation system that is based on mindmapping somehow.
Maybe you don't want that in your current Gods thing, in that case I'm snatching that idea right back.
@eimyr I'd say Microscope is already pretty much like that.
08:46
Microscope is kinda mindmappy.
Except the first-order associations are ordered in time (as opposed to not at all), because it does not create world, it creates history.
Cool. I need to look into that.
@DoomedMind that's why the God of logic reverted it. I was going to change it on my turn anyway.
@eimyr And on a different level, Lovecraftesque reminds me of Microscope with its "only collaborate at the beginning, then just make your own contributions in turn."
It was really put in to slow down the creation of rules, because the rules were hindering the incomprehensible. However, it slowed down the game, so not a great choice.
08:49
There's the same sense of emergently surprising story through individual uncoordinated contributions.
@BESW I just played LVC on Saturday actually.
It was very different to how I thought it was supposed to be.
Much more interesting though!
I was reading the pre-release pdf in line at the post office today.
Why at the post office?
Not sure if I should ping people as often as I do, but: @BESW why at the post office?
Because the line was really long.
Am I meant to ping every time or just sometimes?
08:57
I ping when it might be unclear who or what I'm responding to.
In that case, I was away from the computer making dinner.
Or if it seems the adressee is away/afk
I like to be pinged. It makes me feel special.
16
(I expect an avalanche of pings this evening)
[pins, because @eimyr is just asking for it]
@eimyr Are you gone until then?
Depends, whose evening are we talking about?
09:01
@eimyr [the sound a button makes when it breaks from an overfull belly]
I don't know, but it seemed a good question back pinging you.
I see what you're doing, @BESW.
Who, me? [innocent]
I think the sound is a bit like a rubber band pretending to be a bass.
@eimyr what's all this then eh
@eimyr i thought of it as an arrow hitting a board
09:02
@BESW I have never seen you edit a message so many times.
@Polyducks Those are the pings I find confusing, when they are supposed to be directed at a specific post, but are actually just to the person.
@eimyr Hey, it's efficient.
@Anaphory Sorry, forgot I'm not still playing as the Goddess of the incomprehensible
@nitsua60 Haha no I haven't, but it looks like it's based on nomic too!
@Polyducks More like Calinball. It's in the title…
Although Nomic pre-dates Calvinball, I doubt there's a direct connection between them.
09:12
Yeah, I think Calvinball is taking kids' games to the extreme (immunity zones in tag etc.), and not looking at it as a game with a priori mutable rules.
haha Calvinball is cute as heck
Cuter'n a corgi in a pullover going down a flight of stairs.
Is there a picture coming up for comparison?
I don't want to give the chat Internet Diabetes.
09:27
your consideration for our dietary needs is appreciated.
I don't have such concerns.
That images triggers some weird uncanny valley thing in me. It's like my mind is going, "Why this dog have human feet."
Well, if the damage is going to be done, I might as well get in on it. But I'm going nuclear.
@Polyducks WTF?
09:31
@doomedMind @Pixie This is as far as I dare to go without getting banned from this chat.
That is the funniest thing I've ever seen
Clint Eastwood is holding a baby armadillo. Somewhere, someone's argument has been spontaneously invalidated.
One more cute, but I will link it rather than one-box it. It's a good one though. You have been warned.
apparently, this guy caused many ppl to call the police
@Pixie aww :D
I had a chow growing up, and he often had to be shaven in the summer due to his coat matting and his getting hotspots. Once, my mom shaved him into a lion. Every time he'd go down the hill, she could hear the little girl visiting our neighbor yell, "Mommy! The lion!!!" She eventually felt bad for his dignity and un-lioned him.
09:37
@Pixie haha! :D
But these people were adults, running like the devil. I would want to see that. I'd laugh my ass off.
@BESW I wouldn't hold an armadillo like he did. They carry leprosy, me no likey.
@eimyr Adorable.
@Pixie I know, he lives with me.
09:39
Here is a different cutie eating (I like bats).
@eimyr They are also creatures of the night.
hmmm
@Pixie I have seen a bat once lying on my chocolates packaging foil in the park. that was awesome. One of the girls with us however had a panic though. She wouldn't come near us as long as the bat was there.
I'm thinking of weredillos now.
09:43
@DoomedMind Some people are rather afraid of them. Sad, as they are quite harmless (aside from potential for disease; much as I love them, I don't know if I'd touch a wild one).
yeah, but that's a problem with almost every wild animal...
@Pixie Lots of diseases.
I've seen videos of rabies. You don't want rabies.
But also lots of cute.
> WEREDILLO. You are immune to leprosy and have armour:2, but are weak against being very tasty.
09:45
@Polyducks Right. Just leave the wild ones alone and you'll be okay. :P
And speaking of being a creature of the night:
:D
adorable
@BESW WEREGUINEAPIG. - Mega-Stunt. You are absolutely better at being cute than a human but weak against tasty treats.
It's cuteness thread here!
hahahaha
09:57
[eyes clock] Just like my bedtime.
Stop making me laugh out loud at work
better go and get on with it
later gang
ttfn
10:10
Not an Armadillo, but:
ugh, I have an interview with my boss later. About what I like to do in the future and stuff.
I already feel bad, as I dislike lying.
Aw.
@BESW Can we make him not a knight but a crustacean pirate, so that he's a prawngolin?
Hi guys. Why was this answer: rpg.stackexchange.com/questions/78852/… down-voted?
@PeterDavidCarter I didn't downvote it, but I suspect it has more to do with the question than the answer.
10:19
It looks like pure speculation without any support from any of the source material or from personal experience, and the question is so broad that a good answer for one edition would be absolutely wrong in another.
@BESW I want to make a game about this guy.
Incidentally, chat denizens who know about Buffy, this whole Dawn thing gets explained at some point, right?
Yeah, she's, like, created as the key so she's not actually in a person in some ways, which is why she appears out of nowhere or something. It's all a bit strange..
I didn't need spoilers! Just reassurance that they're not going to keep acting like we should have a clue what's going on.
I was starting to think I'd missed a bunch of episodes or something.
Oh, I didn't realise you hadn't seen it yet.
Which in hindsight is obvious.
10:23
All good, I should have been more specific.
Never watched it coherently.
10:38
The question about a character who could plausibly have died but the story ended I find a fascinating and very good question (if a bit of an unusual one), and it's making me keep think up "if a tree falls in the forest" type questions every time I see it.
@doppelgreener I kinda want to make a Bobba Fett comment.
@BESW What would that be?
@doppelgreener Bobba Fett all but died on screen in the films, and that didn't stop the EU/Legends from bringing him back out of the Sarlacc pit for many more adventures.
10:50
... they brought him out of the Sarlacc pit ...
That dude had better be regarded as a heck of a badass in the EU.
> Though no one in recorded history had ever escaped from the Sarlacc, Fett was able to escape, though not unscathed. Thanks to his iron will and Mandalorian armor, he was able to fight his way out of the beast's belly. Back in action, he resumed his work as a bounty hunter. (source)
@doppelgreener Yeeah. He fought Vader, resisted Sith mind control, tricked him, and shot him in the face.
I read one of the EU books about Fett. That time I didn't know what is EU and I felt that there are many conflicts with other SW universe. I remember that it was stated in the book, that there were about 3 last mandalorians at the time of Jango Fett. Funny thing is that even EU stories have adundance of mandalorians.
Nevertheless I've enjoyed that book. One of my favourite characters from SW.
@BESW I will now read "Mandalorian" as a synonym of "Plot".
@doppelgreener That's... not wrong.
(Also, Fett escaped the Sarlacc twice.)
(Granted, this means he got into the Sarlacc twice, too.)
11:03
@doppelgreener oh ho those scientists, so dumb,... errr what now?
XD
Bird of the Day! Hoatzin (Opisthocomus hoazin) by Rhys Marsh: http://ow.ly/10ku42 https://t.co/w0gcSP8suz
Hoatzins are poor flyers, and require two tiny Hoatzins as auxiliary engines. https://twitter.com/neobirds/status/721680873569935360
First I thought “Why does it have eye-patterns on its legs?”
@nitsua60 Welcome back.
@PeterDavidCarter My close vote is entirely based on perceiving your question as having too many divergent questions in it. Having multiple questions isn't a death-knell per se: "can I frob with a shortbow? What about a longbow or a crossbow?" seems fine to me. But "(a) how to lead players through-not-into crisis (excellent distinction, by the way!), (b) can Asmodeus be redeemed, and (c) should I kill the chief" don't seem tightly related...
@PeterDavidCarter Your edits haven't, in my opinion, addressed this structural problem. Why is it a problem? Consider a hypothetical answer which excellently catalogs the lore of Asmodeus, examples of fall-from-grace and redemption in the lore, and gives you an amazing set of insights on Asmodeus. I, a voter come along: does it get an upvote or not? It hasn't addressed "leading players through crisis" or the fate of the bugbear chief. How do I (the voter) compare this answer one with one that...
...does an excellent job of tackling the crisis-issue?
@BESW Hiya!
11:38
What's new?
@PeterDavidCarter whoops... I'm just catching up on the lotsa-chat that happened while I was sleeping, and I didn't see you'd been in multiple times. Sorry if the last two messages are out-of-date.
@BESW A daughter's sick... (just post-nasal drip and a cough.) But she's sleeping peacefully now for the first time all night/morning, so I hate to wake her =(
Ooh. Sleep is good.
I'm planning to go to bed earlier tonight meself. Taxes always wind up keeping me up most of the night.
@BESW You're not a day or two late on that one?
Oh, you're saying tonight's earlier because recent (pre-deadline) ones have been late?
Yeah.
I filed today (18th).
(Apparently a lot of people missed that Emancipation Day pushed the deadline forward this year, so the lines were nice and short.)
11:54
I awoke with a thought about our NAB conversation last night... but now it's forgotten =(
Aw.
@nitsua60 Any vague hint left?
I might think it was about daily practice, or clergy, or forms of worship? But I might be back-filling at this point....
@Magmoth Hi!
12:15
@BESW @doppelgreener Did you know the sarlacc feeds on the minds of those it entraps?
According to this book I read once
Thanks, George.
A lot of the EU stuff was only vaguely overseen by Lucas.
@Polyducks i am curious to how and why this is possible
George Lucas and JK Rowling are both examples of people that fell to in love with their universe, I think.
@doppelgreener There's a 'space science' book on it. The sarlacc keeps them in pods inside its root system
@Polyducks Yes.
@Miniman I love that comic
12:23
@doppelgreener It's part of how Fett got out the second time; he used the Sarlacc's psychic connection to manipulate it.
I'm pretty sure that's when the idea was invented, too.
@Polyducks Well that is both horrifying and odd, because brains take an awful lot of fuel to run, the sarlacc is already living in the desert where there's very little of that and it's perplexing enough something the size of the sarlacc can itself stay alive when it isn't running a meat-based supercomputer, and i'm not sure what they have to gain from intelligence when they're basically a carnivorous cactus.
@Polyducks It's a statement about Darths and Droids that my first thought on seeing the new Star Wars movie was "I wonder which comic character is going to play which movie character?"
@doppelgreener Honestly? It was probably an attempt to explain the whole "keeps you alive for a thousand years" throw-away line.
@doppelgreener the page says something on that. It's got so large due to Jabba using it as an execution site. But hey, it's starwars, it doesn't have full ecosystems.
@BESW i guess that'd make sense, not that it needed to be explained or given any more weight than hooey

A lot of EU stuff is just painting in around the okapi butts.
Also, yeah, what's it need such a big brain for?
Nice edits, @BESW
@Polyducks or any brain for that matter
@doppelgreener I guess it could've started out as a way to work out how to trap prey better.
i could understand if the sarlacc was The Sarlacc and was in the desert because someone put it there and it was native to another world, but otherwise i guess that's just neat writing but doesn't really hold up to practical analysis
13:10
phew. I am so glad I didnt have to lie >_>
@DoomedMind what's your work?
I'm an IT Trainee in Human Resources.
I am considering to leave though
@DoomedMind and that was some of the hesitation going into this meeting?
13:28
@nitsua60 well, it was about the future of my trainee's program and what would be the kind of work I would be doing then.
Wow. The WP page on moral panic lists these examples: war on drugs, crime increase, video game violence, AIDS, D&D, Satanic rituals, sex offenders, and human trafficking. That's a weird list to find one's hobby on....
And most of what I do now isn't really my cup of tea.
@DoomedMind sorry to hear that
@nitsua60 well, in the meeting we talked about this and it seemed open enough for me to continue on without the need to decide now whether or not this will continue.
and I got the chance which things I really dont want to do, and what I would do to help until then
sounds like improvement on the horizon, then?
@doppelgreener can I make a quick suggestion about your dice answer?
13:32
I am to make a document outlining what I want to do, what kind of "tools" I am fluent with, and where I know the basics but am not particularly fit at the moment.
@nitsua60 it may
meanwhile, I will finish an application to another organization, where a friend of mine works, which in the long run sounds more beneficial to me.
However, while this is true, I'm glad I enrolled in the trainee program here, I'd never known how businesses work for the "regular" guys.
@DoomedMind what do you mean "regular"?
@nitsua60 always
@nitsua60 non-software developers :)
@doppelgreener In your second bullet you say "reroll" which I worry might be read as "discard result and roll die again" when you mean... but I can't think of the single verb that catches what you mean. You mean roll k<N dice, sum those results, then roll N-k dice and continue adding. I don't think "reroll" is a great word, but can't think of the better one... =(
Perhaps "supplement" the roll?
Or "roll two to four dice, tally the result, then roll the remainder and add to the tally"?
Boop. Edited.
13:44
Cool. Hope you think that's an improvement.
Also, "only difference"? Methinks you discount how fun it is to roll big handfuls of dice =)
Science has no time for fun.
But actually that's a good point. XD I'll mention that later.
@nitsua60 it's good. Thank you.
You should have seen some of the parties at Fermilab--I'm amazed the fun left any time for science =D
Haha! Fantastic
I'm off for the night. Tally ho :)
@doppelgreener ttfn
@nitsua60 Yeah, I hope so. I'll see whether thats true or not.
