What is the problem of the PC, when after i turn it on, i don't see anything on the screen and keyboard + mouse don't work and shine as well...
It's most probably the motherboard?
The PC was turned on when all of sudden the power went off
@EinsteinsGrandson: or PSU
heya @BenRichards
Oh hai
:P
It's too early for brain to function
no no
you mean
Can't brain. coffee need.
Bob
Bob
Hmm.. the Nintendo conference is looking somewhat interesting :P
I don't need coffee. I need lunch. In 1.5 hours.
14:28
@BenRichards: you're braining fine then
Bob
Bob
@JourneymanGeek Can't coffee; need brain?
(that would fit me)
@JourneymanGeek So you say. I'm actually functioning below spec right now.
@Bob: only if you are so undercaffeinated you mistake someone's head for a giant coffee bean.
14:36
Oiii
this is a video of what happens after i turn the PC on:
What's that racket?
Gotta make money somehow.
So, it cannot be a PSU...
@EinsteinsGrandson ugh... check your monitor cable? :P
14:38
can still be a PSU
or a video card
check your brain stem
it helps you think
there's a good reason I love having a second functional computer ;p
i also have it
that's why i can write here
@JourneymanGeek Me too. I like having a second. And a third. And a smartphone. :P
@JourneymanGeek I've actually been rolling with no computer. Less problems at home that way. =D
14:39
(or at least a spare PSU)
I mean for swapping parts
@Tanner: I just cannot do that
I can do most of what I want off my phone
@Tanner HUH???????????
i boggle at how you survive without at least a laptop...
'er... well... I guess most of what I want and am capable of doing whilst a four year old attacks me
@Tanner: screen's too small (I think even my tablet's too small), I can't power my music stuff off a phone either...
14:41
i need screen size and a keyboard. can't go smaller than a surface pro
when I get some time to myself I grab the wife's work laptop, but other than that the phone is nice for browsing in one hand and taking care of incessant needs with the other
2
@allquixotic: and real usb ports for my external sound card
@Tanner can't you just tell your kid to stop needing?
@Tanner Woah woah woah. G-rated, please!
;)
14:42
lol
@BenRichards ahahahaha
@allquixotic: never had a kid I guess ;p
@JourneymanGeek nope, and never will
@allquixotic tried. kids don't respond well to that. =D
they're sneaky little fellas who attack you every chance they get...
or was that ninjas..
or cats..
14:43
no it was all both three
you couldn't pay me $6 billion and offer me the first silicon of Intel's next-gen CPU to take care of a kid
or puppies...
puppies have no sneak in them :P
lol
@Tanner: you have NEVER had to deal with mini schauzers
ah, no sir I haven't
14:43
take your eyes off em for a moment, and they teleport.
and they're just the right size to blend into the environment
my jack russel goes mighty quick >_> but she isn't sneaky at all
lol
jack's are fast
my cat doesn't attack, but if you're eating dinner, she'll sit there quietly on the floor for about 18 seconds, and if food from the table doesn't magically appear on the floor, she'll stretch her arm out real slow, and dig her claws into your leg and meow pitifully like "PLEEEEEASE I NEVER GET TO EAT ANYTHING, I WILL STARVE!!!!"
@JourneymanGeek Like this?
@BenRichards: oh, only away from you, and right into trouble.
14:46
@JourneymanGeek Ah ;)
LFR's once pooped stratergically, and charged right into the waiting area of an agility training session while I was scooping to see one of his girlfriends ;p
Pets and Kids: Just say no.
Clearly he was creating a diversion so he could get some private time with his girlfriend :P
14:48
naturally!
but a lot of those dogs arn't properly socialised
some of those owners are a bit stupid
it's not a monitor's fault... i connected it to a notebook and it works flawlessly
video card is on the motherboard
that can fail too
seriously, without testing, its PRETTY hard to tell
so how can i test it?
swap parts around till it runs I guess
thats what I'd do
hell it's what I do for a living >_>
14:56
easier to do when you have a lab / IT shop and several spare computers
hence my comment about being happy I had a spare system
OH
@BenRichards: did you try doing a bios reset on that system?
and if i don't have nither lab nor IT shop?
;o))))))))))))))))))))))))))))
@EinsteinsGrandson you eat pringles and bash the computer with your fist until it works
Bob
Bob
14:58
@EinsteinsGrandson Now I'm hungry.
I bought a can of salt & vinegar pringles two days ago. I'll go get it.
@Bob i hate you
i'm going to have to go to Wawa and buy some now
@JourneymanGeek Yeah. I pulled out the battery and waited for a minute, plugged it back in. No dice.
hmm
what's the chipset and processor again?
Um... hold on.
People threw ideas up when I posted for help on reddit's /r/buildapc. I'll link the thread.
15:01
I have ONE more idea, but that's cause fax had wierd issues with a SB board and a IB chip without updating the firmware
Bob
Bob
@JourneymanGeek Wait what.
@Bob: mutual friend of ours
we call him fax, cause, donno, everyone calls him fax
@Bob If you haven't noticed, me and @JourneymanGeek know each other from before SU. :P
15:02
yup!
huh, didn't know that
@BenRichards: falcon is on the comms room ;p
Well now you know!
@JourneymanGeek :O
Did you rope him in here as well? :P
not at the moment
duh!
15:03
I spread the good word!
Apparently! :P
I've been trying to rope in syl as well, kid needs a confidence boost.
but not much luck there
Aha
@JourneymanGeek So yeah, in that thread I link the RAM and motherboard.
@BenRichards: someone mentioned flashing the rom
Bob
Bob
@BenRichards Ah.
15:04
HOWEVER, there MAY be a way to do it without a chip in place
donno if its an asusism tho
@JourneymanGeek I don't know.
worth looking up, I'd tried that when I had issues with my original build
So in that thread, it was suggested that I need to upgrade my BIOS, as it only supports 3rd gen Core i5 after a certain rev, and so the memory error could be a red herring.
(before I was told I buggered up the motherboard)
yup
for fax, one of his PCI cards didn't work
15:05
That's my next try. However, I don't have a 2nd gen Core i* to use it with
Aha
pity you don't live locally ;p
oh, wait, neither do I
There is a computer shop in my town run by a couple guys who do system building and support. I figure I could bring it down to them and ask if they could help me out. Never went there but this is probably the only reason I would go someplace like that :P
@JourneymanGeek Hah :P
XD
I need to drop by the awesome hardware store of doom
Can I exchange a 350 watt PSU to 500 watt PSU?
and probably am buying a new HDD instead of a lathe
@EinsteinsGrandson: ....
please think about that. carefully.
(and realise it makes perfect sense)
15:07
I recommend 1000+W PSUs or nothing. ;)
@EinsteinsGrandson only if you want to SET THE ATMOSPHERE ON FIRE!!!!!1
lol
I have a 520w
Heh, my PC has a 775W PSU.
course, i also have.. oh, a laptop, a 24V PSU for my amp (<3)...
Yes, I actually needed that much power. Under load, it would draw ~600W.
15:08
@BenRichards: what do you use with your headphones?
OH
@JourneymanGeek Nothing. I just plug them in.
I was trying onboard sound, sounded REALLY quiet
@JourneymanGeek I have some integrated chipset for audio. Sounds fine to me.
ahh
supposes I expect the potential for MOAR VOLUME
My Logitech 5.1 speakers have a headphone jack too but the sound isn't as good from those. It's like it adds some compression or whatever.
15:09
that's why i'm asking here.... if i were a complete idiot i would do it without asking, killing few people probably.... ;o)
probably does
I do have a desktop amp now, so.. ;p
@EinsteinsGrandson google.com
actually it has switchble inputs. pondering dumping my speakers

Q: How do I uninstall Internet Explorer 9 so I can install Internet Explorer 6?

Antoni4040I've tried uninstalling Internet Explorer 9 in Windows 7 from Control Panel, it always produces an error and fails. From Command Prompt, it didn't do anything. The file can not be deleted. I can move it, and then delete it through Linux (dual-boot), on booting back into Windows, Internet Explore...

15:11
then using the tinny monitor speakers for system sounds ;p
Bob
Bob
WHYYYYYYYYYYYY
@JourneymanGeek This is what I have for a PSU: jonnyguru.com/…
As far as PSU reviews go, jonnyguru does them well.
Also he peppered the review of my PSU with a lot of song lyrics references. Which is amusing. :P
15:20
I'm satisfied with my computer. I got some good parts in it.
other than my speakers ;p
cpx
cpx
Is it possible to take a screenshot of complete webpage?
15:25
@cpx You can print to PDF. Or just stitch it together manually from multiple screenshots.
cpx
cpx
I guess I'll need to install Adobe Reader before that.
Bob
Bob
@cpx There's browser extensions to do that.
Also, Snagit (a screenshot program) can. I believe Greenshot can do it too (this one is free).
cpx
cpx
Firefox?
Bob
Bob
Firefox also has a built-in screenshot command.
cpx
cpx
Ah, yes. I used to have 'Snagit' on my previous system running Windows XP.
Bob
Bob
15:29
@cpx Press Shift + F2, type in help screenshot
You'll want something like screenshot filename true false 0 true to take a full-page screenshot and copy it to the clipboard.
There's extensions that make this easier.
Wait, that command is wrong :\
@BenRichards: I went right to his gutless wonder reviews ;p
cpx
cpx
Where shall I type that command?
ooh that's cool
@JourneymanGeek What do you mean?
Oh, nevermind
@BenRichards: he reviews truely crappy power supplies ;p
Bob
Bob
15:33
@cpx Use something like this or this. It's easier.
Greenshot (and Snagit) would work in any scrollable window.
and I love the fact he takes apart the PSUs
Bob
Bob
@cpx If you want the built-in command, hit Shift + F2 to bring up a bar down the bottom ("Developer Bar").
Type help screenshot to see the options.
A basic full-page screenshot to the clipboard is screenshot --clipboard --fullpage
@JourneymanGeek Never saw. Awesome!
Bob
Bob
or, saving to a file: screenshot filename.png --fullpage
lol
"But enough about the power cord, let's get on to the power supply itself. No, wait, let's don't. If we put our weight on this thing, it will collapse in on itself like an empty soda can. I don't want to say the housing is flimsy, but I've seen episodes of the TV show Merlin with stronger writing."
15:38
gah so today while playing tf2, I kept killing someone, after a while that kid pleads with me over the microphone not to kill her often :|
I felt bad
cpx
cpx
I downloaded the FireShot. I'm going to try the command as well.
That's a lot of Ws.
Heh, never read a gutless wonder review before. Nice.
cpx
cpx
@Bob Ah. It's the other way around: screenshot --fullpage filename.png
15:50
something is wrong there
my pc tells me to pee
16:26
I regret indulging my dad's curiosity about Windows 8
His computer is stuck in a reboot loop after a day of... using it just fine
@BoltClock The Annoying Pyro :D
Many use that name
@HackToHell Yeah but I'm Stack Exchange's very own
:P
Heh
Back from lunch
16:47
Oh, last week I gave a family friend (who was looking for a new laptop and heard bad things about Windows 8, but never saw it) a demo of Windows 8. He actually said it wasn't as bad it was made out to be. I still think he wants 7 but only because of familiarity :P
@BenRichards my mom liked her Ubuntu more than the Windows 8 I just saddled her with recently, even after installing Start8 before ever handing it to her, so she never got to experience the burn of "where's my start menu??????????????????"
one of the nice things about Ubuntu is that it could actually suspend/resume the system correctly, whereas Windows 8 won't wake up from sleep
tried everything with drivers troubleshooting etc
it just won't
After he figured out that the start screen is the start menu, just full screen, and hot corners, he said "so it's just a question of getting used to it". Which is really all it is.
Ever since I installed Windows 8 on my girlfriends PC, weird things are happening. At first it wouldn't go to sleep, that turned out to be related to the keyboard though. Now it properly goes to sleep but wakes up all. the. time.
16:55
lol
Like, it will wake from sleep 20 times a day
Windows 8 needs some diphenhydramine so it can get to sleep properly
For no apparent reason, it drives me nuts
@allquixotic I had to do some funky stuff to Ubuntu when I had it on my laptop (in 2008?) to get it to resume from sleep without killing network connectivity.
Sleep wouldn't work properly at all sometimes on another machine.
Or was that wifi...
Maybe it's the keyboard still, I have no clue :D
16:55
Can't remember :P
@BenRichards much more has changed in Ubuntu since 2008 than in Windows
@allquixotic I know a lot has changed. :P
@allquixotic It sucks more now
@OliverSalzburg taken out of context, that's pretty funny. you don't know why it drives you nuts? :P
16:56
Though I do still have to figure out why my Windows 8 desktop likes to awake from hibernation a couple times a day.
For no apparent reason, I get angry when EinsteinsGrandson comes in chat. I don't know why I do that!!! ;o)))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))
@BenRichards If you find out, let me know :P
@OliverSalzburg Ok :P
I've already deep dived into scheduled tasks, wake timers, etc. So I'm missing something.
The worst part of this issue is that it sometimes doesn't really fully wake up. It turns on the HDD, fans, ... goes for a couple of minutes but with no video signal and then it shuts off again
And I'm standing there like wtf?
My tablet though sleeps like a baby.
@OliverSalzburg Now that I'm running Folding@home, it won't go to sleep automatically any more, so I have to shut it down if I want to keep it off.
Because while I like contributing, I don't want it sucking wattage all hours of the day and night, generating heat and high electric bills.
@BenRichards yay !
@HackToHell It's my solution to having a grossly overpowered PC :P
@BenRichards It's also a solution to those ugly, low power bills
I stopped running WCG after too mcuh BSODs
@OliverSalzburg O.O
@BenRichards Everyone here seems to have overpowered PCs
17:01
@OliverSalzburg Hah
my surface pro is underpowered ):
@HackToHell I suppose. :) Mine's the overpoweredest, though ;P
lol :D
specs ?
@BenRichards NO
17:01
There you go
SPEC FIGHT
NOW START !
Can we sum the specs of all systems we maintain?
2x500GB hybrid HDD in RAID0, AMD Phenom II x4 955 Black Edition (currently stock, but will OC at some point). 16 GB 1333 MHz DDR3 RAM, MSI R7970 GHz Edition (used to be 2x MSI Radeon HD 6970 Lightning), 775W Thermaltake ToughPower XT PSU, Cooler Master Storm Stryker case, Cooler Master V8 CPU cooler.
@OliverSalzburg I love it when VPS providers do that
they sum the GHz of each core your machine gets and they're like "12000 MHz!!!!!!!!!!"
17:03
@allquixotic Mine is over 9000!!!
@allquixotic lol
This reminds me that I wanted to get a CPU upgrade...
@BenRichards 7970 sweet ~_~
@HackToHell It is :3
@BenRichards 2 x 4TB SATA 7200RPM in hardware RAID-0, Adaptec 6405E RAID controller, Core i7 3770K, 32GB DDR3-1800, Radeon HD7970 with the GHz Edition BIOS (hack hack hack), 1 KW PSU, ASUS P8Z77-V mobo, and stock CPU cooler
And I just found 5€ in the dryer \o/ Already 5€ closer to that new CPU!!!
17:05
Dangit man, @allquixotic you have me beat.
:P
But eww, stock CPU cooler!
@allquixotic So do you run WCG ?
@BenRichards it never throttles down, but I guess it probably doesn't do turbo as much / as long as it could
@allquixotic What's your heat output like?
but when i tell it to run at 100% performance like when playing a game, it will clock itself up to the full base clock
I needed the V8 to keep mine down.
@BenRichards heat output? what do you mean? from the case into the environment?
Like ambient temps
Mine were approaching 50C inside the case, leading me to get insanely high GPU temps.
The V8 dropped that down 20C at least.
oh. my room is very well-cooled, especially in the summer time, as a central AC vent blows directly on the back of the case... in winter i close off the vent and my room gets cold from outside temps
Ah nice
I had no such luxury :P
my case has pretty much the same ambient temp as my room because i have so many (and so large) fans
17:08
My case has fans galore as well, but it didn't help. I think I had air turbulence.
if anything the heat output from the case into the environment in my room is a problem, especially in the summer, because it defeats the A/C and my room gets really warm
i have to open the door in my room to bring in colder hallway air
Yeah
I know that feeling.
in winter i love it though; just ask journeymangeek about my efforts to mine bitcoin to generate heat in winter
I also have gotten dry eyes while gaming because apparently the way my desk is laid out, the hot air blowing out from my case gets reflected and redirected up from under my desk into my face. :|
That's one thing I need to fix
Hehe
i don't suffer from dry eye, but i get to sneezing if i stay in the house too long because of all the accumulated dust lol
17:10
Hah
My case has dust filters :P
mine too, although they're perennially clogged
i should clean out my hepa filters and the vent on the back of the 7970 before something overheats
Apparently the medium pile carpet in my living room blocks my PSU's air intake and causes it to shut down pretty quickly. My computer regularly sits on my bedroom floor, which has a low pile carpet.
Ideally it'd be on my desk but no room.
i manually built a device not too dissimilar to those things you rotate in your car to direct the A/C flow, and mounted it on top of the central A/C vent right behind my computer
so that's how i direct the cold air to the PC in the summer and the heat away from it in the winter
because my PC isn't directly lined up with the vent, and if I were to line it up, my PC would be in between my legs when i sit down at the desk
17:14
nice
xD @ xbone

Q: Should number of votes and/or higher answers be listed higher?

KeltariUnless Im mistaken, answers to questions appear in reverse chronological order, with newer answers being first in the list. Ive always felt that the accepted answer should be listed first and then descending by the highest number of votes. Isnt the purpose to find the answer, or best possible a...

17:59
Damn, I accidentally created a second Starcraft 2 profile in another region O__o
That explains a lot
Bob
Bob
@OliverSalzburg Hmm.. maintain?
I assume you mean privately owned? :P
@Bob No, I mean like all the ones I maintain for our clients ;P
Bob
Bob
@OliverSalzburg Oooh, so what's yours? :P
@Bob No idea, I didn't take the time to sum up everything. That could take a while :P
But if you were referring to my desktop only, I'm not sure if I even want to mention it now that @allquixotic and @BenRichards listed their obscene setups!
Bob
Bob
18:16
Heh. I'll add mine to the mix.
Desktop: 2x2TB RAID1, 2x2TB SATA2, 1x1.5TB USB2, i7-2600, MSI P67A-C45, 2x4GB DDR3 1333MHz, MSI GTX 560, 650W cheapass PSU. Stock cooling, and I forgot the case brand.
I'm sure you can beat that, @OliverSalzburg :P
(Or, at least not have a P67. Useless piece of shite.)
Laptop: i7-3632QM, 720GB HDD, 2x4GB DDR3 1600 MHz, shitty 15" 1366x768 screen, switchable 7670M that @allquixotic dislikes...
Oh, and Beats audio.
Screw that.
Hmm. A survey form for my uni has Tux as its favicon o.O
Bob
Bob
@Tanner I can feel the my brains oozing out my ears from the stupid...
@Bob 1x256GB Crucial M4 SSD, 1x500GB Samsung Spinpoint F3, 1x1TB WD Green, 2x1TB USB; i7-2600K (with the neat-o Alpenföhn Himalaya cooler); Intel DZ68BC; 4x8GB Corsair Vengeance DDR3-1600 (running at 1333 :P); POV GeForce GTX 580; Be Quiet! Dark Power Pro 750W; all stuffed into a Lancool PC-K62 case
I need to get one of those i7-3770K to finally fully utilize the RAM :\
Bob
Bob
Hmm...
And a couple more SSDs...
And more of everything!
Bob
Bob
18:29
Can't you OC something to use it?
@Bob To my understanding the CPU doesn't support more than 1333 and I get into a reboot loop if I try anyway :P
So, maybe I could OC something. But I'm not too fond of trying
Bob
Bob
@OliverSalzburg Hence the overclocking? :P
I rather spend the money on a new CPU
Bob
Bob
I'm quite sure my mobo said it supported 1600 and 2100 when overclocked.
The mobo supports it just fine
Alright, gotta get back to Starcraft :P
Bob
Bob
18:31
lol
good luck
