02:04
morning!
02:49
Idea: I clone my hdd onto my ssd. I delete off most programs from the ssd. I upgrade the ssd's os to win 8, and then from win 8 I reset the OS and start off clean
Does that work?
@Cyclone what's the point in doing that?
Get win 8 onto my ssd.
@Cyclone why do you need to reset the OS? I just don't understand what you're trying to achieve that can't be done in a simpler way
if you're going to reset the OS, you'll lose everything, so you may as well just install Windows 8 fresh on the SSD and copy over any data you need
Problem is my school only offers a free upgrade, not the whole OS
so if I clone my existing OS then I have a copy of win7 I can upgrade.
@Cyclone you can use an upgrade key to install the OS fresh
02:56
You can? How?
I'd much rather do that
But on the page it says "this is for an upgrade only you must have a preexisting windows installation"
wherever you might have heard (or assumed) that an upgrade license is just an upgrade and not a clean install, you're wrong...
I mean to install on a newly formatted ssd, with absolutely no traces of an OS on it. Can I do that?
I almost feel the upgrade route I was looking into seems simpler...
@Cyclone: I do believe you can get a install cd or DVD off the upgrade thing
or maybe upgrade off a fresh 7 trial?
Gotcha
For the record @JourneymanGeek the caddy finally came! It's a bit lower quality than an OEM part but it appears to be working, though if I ever decide to swap the SSD out I will almost certainly need to break this caddy apart.
o0
@Cyclone: break apart? why?
03:06
I was able to format it with little trouble, and benchmark tests revealed it to be at least 5x the speed of my hdd if not faster
and just to refresh my memory, this was the caddy that sits in your CD rom bay, right?
Because the ssd is so firmly attached at the connector and I won't be able to get a proper grip on it to undo it
Yeah
Also I think the caddy's stuck too which solves my falling out problem
03:07
Oh but I discovered in the process that it's quite easy to take apart my actual laptop case and thus the caddy can be removed with ease - apparently the e6520 is targeted for upgradability
Oh plus, worst case scenario and I can't get my OS running on this SSD, I just have a new place to install all my programs to. That'll work yeah?
For example if I uninstall Inventor and reinstall it to the SSD it should start up nearly instantly instead of taking five minutes right?
In theory!
depends on what the bottleneck is
The bottleneck is definitely r/w speed, Inventor needs to load many thousands of files to initialize properly
I prefer to go the other way
ahh
then yes
and SSDs are bloody brillant in random access
03:13
Even without knowing what the number means (flops?) the difference is immediately obvious
floating point operations a second
Ah crap, thought that was short for FiLe Operations Per Second
or that ;p
I wasn't sure what unit of measurement these unlabeled numbers were in for this benchmark
Cause it's samsung and samsung thinks I'm a child who can't handle units
{| class="infobox" |+ Computer performance ! Name ! lol
In scientific terms... its ludiciously fast ;p
03:20
Yep!
03:31
Oh...ordering a 3d printer soon by the way
I've had enough bitcoins to do this for a while, but I was having trouble deciding on a brand
03:56
Sooo.. when you go to post an answer and click the pink question mark on the right side and go to lists, is it known that #3 is a 7 or am I reading something wrong?

04:12
@Hennes I don't have that on my HP laptop.
@cpx You can force one or the other from the Windows Power Options.
As for checking, some programs let you monitor the clock rate of all GPUs. I use HWiNFO, and when a GPU is completely shut down it's clocked at 0.
05:10
afterburner might work there
Bob
Bob
@JourneymanGeek Does that work with non-MSI machines?

Q: Unable to run Internet explorer 7 on Wine 1.2, ubuntu 8.04

levaFollowing the instructions here: http://www.wine-reviews.net/wine-reviews/applications/ie-7-on-linux-with-wine.html I installed IE7. But when I run it with Wine 1.2 with: wine iexplore.exe& I get: Explorer$ fixme:system:SetProcessDPIAware stub! fixme:heap:HeapSetInformation (nil) 1 (nil) 0 fix...

There have been several new versions of WINE, Ubuntu and IE since then...

@Bob: I'd let it be, personally
OOH
@allquixotic: tomshardware.com/reviews/bitcoin-mining-make-money,3514-4.html - This explains pretty why nvidia cards suck at bitcoin mining
the rest of the article is hillarious
"Each air duct had a 120 mm LED fan at the end, and it was these fans that proved to be my downfall. They shone mesmerizing circles of intense blue light into the peaceful California night. Eventually, the owner of the office building saw the blue circles, walked up to the ground floor window, and felt a blast of hot air in his face. Shortly thereafter, I was evicted."
aww :P

08:09
@JourneymanGeek Ok :P
@JourneymanGeek :(
wow 6990 mines at 700 Mh/s [FIXED] :P
@JourneymanGeek why ;p
MH/s, surely :P
@HackToHell: the part about excessive power use?
:-D
Also, nVidia Titan as absolutely crap at mining bit/lite-coins :P
08:15
I recall reading a comparison between Titan and Ati 7000 series
not surprised really
where almost any 7000 series card beat titan
My 6570 is faster than @Jou's 660
it mostly comes down to the fact that ATi cards bruteforce themselves through :b
660
one generation and stepping better
08:16
/me finds it really amusing :P
but then again, they're really only faster at mining bit/lite-coins ;P
Bob
Bob
@Leathe They have no concept of power efficiency :P
I bought it entirely as a efficient gaming card
and efficient it is :P
08:23
@Leathe: its got better power efficiency than a 660ti, and can run most games on my little 20 inch screen at maximum settings
yeah, I have a 660 aswell
memory is stock OC, tho
I saw no reason to buy a 660 TI :p
amusingly?
this wasn't built as a pure gaming rig
mine sort of was :b but with the budget in mind
08:25
lol
core i7 ;p
(non K tho)
I have the i5 3570K
I built this to be able to handle VMs for school
core i7 3770
the i7's were way too expensive for me ;P
didn't feel the ability to overclock was worth the potential use of VT-D in future
and not really necessary for gaming
08:28
(I also saved closed to 300 dollars comparision shopping)
SSD was free too (thanks SE <3)
wut
how did you get an SSD for free?
lol
won it in the windows 8 contest
oh
lucky :b
seriously, if it so happens I have 1) motivation 2) questions I'm a question answering machine ;p
Bob
Bob
@JourneymanGeek I am somewhat jealous :P
Hm. Are Samsung SSDs any good?
Local store has some 256 GB ones for $187
840 series...
Bob
Bob
My GPU is one gen behind you two :P
560
@Leathe I was more worried about reliability than performance :\
@Bob I suppose Samsung are pretty new in the SSD business
so I'm not really sure about reliability :b
I haven't read anything bad about them atleast
09:13
@Bob: the standard 840 uses TLC, its supposed to last slightly shorter
but in general they're one of the best all round drives
@Bob: that freed up cash for some of my more interesting gear
Bob
Bob
@JourneymanGeek Hmm... heavily considering.
also, the standard 840 is 250MB
Bob
Bob
But that's still $0.75/GB, which is pretty pricey.
I think its cause they have more reserved space
09:29
Humm. The E3 press conferences being in 6h 30 min with Microsoft
10:06
@Bob: trade off is really MOAR SPEED
Bob
Bob
@JourneymanGeek But MOAR MONEH
I'd have stuck with my existing, pre-flood 500gb disk if I hadn't won this one ;p
Bob
Bob
Ah, the HDD calendar...
Bob
Bob
We have PF and AF.
10:07
@Bob: prices have almost dropped to pre-flood levels here
XD
10:43
You could almost say, they're below sea level!!! :D
I'll show myself out
@OliverSalzburg: the window, not the door, please ;p
Bob
Bob
@Leathe D:

indeed. boo tumblr

@Bob It doesn't seem to detect GPU#2 when the system is plugged in. I think it's a bug in Graphic drivers running on Windows 8.
@cpx: both discrete?
Bob
Bob
@cpx It should always detect and show both GPUs (in a drop-down?) on the summary screen.
Worked fine for me on an HP laptop running Win8 with switchable graphics.
Wait, was yours a laptop or desktop?
(desktops don't typically have switchable)
cpx
cpx
11:46
@JourneymanGeek One of them is Integrated.
oh right, laptop?
it might be intentional.
cpx
cpx
Yes.
tried messing with power savings settings to get to power save while plugged in?
cpx
cpx
It didn't show the discrete graphics card on the summary screen even when I had it in plugged in.

I assume Windows 8 doesn't properly support the switchable drivers.
wait
did the system come with windows 8?
cpx
cpx
Yes, pre-installed.
hm
then it bloody well ought to work ><
cpx
cpx
I simply have no way to confirm if the discrete graphics card is in use/running/turned on.
Is it possible to use both or one at a time?
Bob
Bob
@cpx Look in the Windows Power Options.
I said this last night.
@cpx Yes it does. I'm using it.
You can force onboard only in the Power Options.
11:59
@cpx Technically: yes
However there are very big caveeats
Bob
Bob
As for confirming, on the summary screen in HWiNFO, top right, there's a drop-down to select a GPU.
You can run a build in 'GPU' from an AMD APU and a dedicated AMD card.
Sort of crossfire
But you can not mix different generations. Nor can you mix different brands
E.g. no intel build in GPU and a AMD or Nividia decicated chip
With the right software you should be able to switch between them. Both you will not have a single 'card' with the combined speed of both.
cpx
cpx
12:21
In Power Options, Dynamic GPU switching is set to "Automatic Selection" for both plugged in and battery. The second option is "Force Power saving GPU".
On summary screen in HWiNFO, top right, drop-down list where it says "Select a GPU" it only shows integrated GPU.
Bob
Bob
Ya, the latter one is weird.
Does the discrete come up in Device Manager?
cpx
cpx
In Device Manager > Display adapters, yes.
Both are there.
Bob
Bob
Hmm.

1 hour later…

@JourneymanGeek also explains why Bitcoin is a total crapshoot unless you get free electricity
university students could probably run a smallish rig and take in a nice side income during their stay at uni, maybe even plug it in a computer lab where electricity is expected to be consumed in large volume already
That assumes the computer lab is not already drawing max power and or running cables to the library to get extra power
