The stylish version needs tweaking ...
01:18
a bit quiet here with so many people
Shhht! I am hunting wabbits. :)
01:48
hey guys
does anybody know which .NET framework was the latest that I could install on Windows XP?
4.0?
or 3.5?
for 4.5 i would need Vista or 7 or 8 ?
it's true
4.0 is the latest
the most recent version .net framework that works on Windows XP is 4.0
how about XPS viewer?
how can i run it in Windows XP?
any command line command?
or where I can find the .exe that I would run?
for an XPS viewer?
I think it is under windhoos software. Wait a sec (boots XP vm)
Ah, it was no in Xp by default. It was in win7 by default.
@Hennes that is because XPS was released after the days of XP
so?
can i run it at all in XP?
;o)
I remember deinstalling it, and then getting an 'important update' because a program I did not have installed had a newer version.
Yes follow the link I just posted
02:02
For XP, download it from Joshua's link. For win7 just tick the 'windows feature' called 'XPS viewer'
ok
thanks
goodnight
3:08 in Europ
e
Yeah.
Same here. I just got the 3 AM cron jobs output in the mail
How do I format my answers better?
@Joshua: what do you mean?
link something thats not up to scratch
For some unbelievable reason, 64 bit Windows 8 works while 32 bit install fails ! yay anyway :P
02:12
I mostly spied how others did it, until someone pointed me at superuser.com/editing-help
Win 8 is really different :/
ya, that helps
I thought Clippy was freakin dead...
and learning to use the keyboard markup
Aye. And hard to use without a manual.
02:13
@Joshua: That is not dead which can eternal lie,
and with strange aeons even death may die.
;p
@JourneymanGeek you just blew up my brain...
Darn. I need to google that. I am at the 'it just sounds familiar'
Weird. I do not normally read lovecraft.
02:22
How can I make myself the owner of SE? (Just testing)
hehehehe it works.
02:35
@Hennes: Its probably the most famous line by him
03:14
Uh, does win 8 not do pinch to zoom stuff? I can't seem to get it to work in Chrome (desktop). It worked (not like it does in iOS, but still) back in win 7...
03:28
is anyone else experiencing weird things over at SO chat?
it looks like this:
@KronoS: that looks like it does when your internet is slow, and it won't load properly
@JourneymanGeek but I'm not having any issues here
(meaning root access)
there's a chance SO's chat is on a different server
@JourneymanGeek I'm assuming that it is... in fact I'm pretty sure it is
03:50
Ok, I have to say, this Sony VAIO Duo 11 is freaking awesome :D
And, interestingly, despite it being the same Windows 8 that I have on my desktop, using it in tablet form feels so different than using it on my desktop.
Right now I'm typing on the hardware keyboard, though. Still getting used to the size, but it works well.
And... the screen is downright gorgeous.
04:22
is it frowned upon to ask the person who asked the question to mark the answer as an answer?
Generally, no.
Bob
Bob
@KronoS weird things here :P
took me a while to connect to Root Access
@sidran32 that's cause it's a tablet UI
without touch, you're missing half the features :P
morning
morning
@KronoS it's fine here, seems like the CSS might have been truncated in your case
04:30
hmm seems like messages take a while to load
Not really. I don't feel like I'm missing anything when I use it on the desktop. I just feel like my user experience is different, but neither sacrifices much of anything. Surprisingly, I'd say Microsoft got windows 8 pretty right.
Bob
Bob
@HackToHell UEFI? GPT?
Hi @Sathya
Bob
Bob
@sidran32 desktop mode, and the main screen, are alright
hey @Sathya
Bob
Bob
04:31
but scrolling, especially sideways, is awkward with the mouse
i'd like your opinion on this
Bob
Bob
for one, the scrollbars pretty much fade out
@Bob I don't find issues with scrolling. I just use the scroll wheel and it scrolls just fine.
I think you can click and drag anywhere, too
Bob
Bob
if your scrollwheel does side scrolling :P
click and drag doesn't work for me
which is part of the problem
@Bob Side scrolling isn't necessary. Just use vertical scrolling and it scrolls :P
Bob
Bob
04:32
dunno if it's supposed to and just my drivers, or not supposed to
I swear it didn't on the Store
@sidran32 o.O
I dunno. I don't remember. I have a touchscreen here :P
@Bob I guess you never tried using vertical scrolling with the scroll wheel, then? :P
Bob
Bob
@sidran32 probably not
either that or it didn't work
I'd hardly be complaining if it worked, would I? :P
@Bob It definitely works. I use it all the time. I'd be much more fed up with Metro on the desktop if it didn't :P
Bob
Bob
@sidran32 just to clarify, you mean the vertical scrollwheel scrolls sideways?
@Bob Yes.
Bob
Bob
04:35
I'm gonna reboot and go check
Up goes to the left side, down goes to th right side.
Ok
Bob
Bob
if it doesn't, hello new question :P
:)
Man, I'm gonna love having this thing. It's so awesome. :)
I can see why some reviewers dinged it for having sharp edges, but it honestly doesn't really bother me. The hardware feels just rock solid.
@sidran32 pics?
@Sathya They'll probably be crappy but I'll try :P
Not pictured is the stylus, which I haven't tried much yet, but it does work well :P
Bob
Bob
04:45
@sidran32 ok, it worked o.O
I can't believe I never tried that :S
@Bob Well, there you go :)
Bob
Bob
thanks
No problem :)
So yeah, @Sathya, that's my new tablet hybrid thingy :P
It's so awesome. And so thin! I did not expect that.
Bob
Bob
@sidran32 how much does it weigh?
It isn't that bad at all. In terms of size and weight, actually, it's pretty much comparable to the MacBook Air, if you ever felt one of those.
Bob
Bob
04:49
nope :P
@Bob Well... looks up specs
Bob
Bob
anyway, currently trying to figure out how to get Firefox Elm to show the tab bar without a touchscreen :P
cool
Approximately 2.8 lbs
Bob
Bob
right click twice
Bob
Bob
04:50
@sidran32 not bad :P
@Bob You get the hidden menu thingies in metro apps by right-clicking :p
Bob
Bob
I recall Asus has a (RT) tablet at about half a kilo
@sidran32 yea, got the first one... didn't know the tab bar came with a second click
@Bob Aha
Bob
Bob
I expected the tab bar to come on the first or not at all
Ah
Um, anyways... I need to shower and get to bed, and stop playing with my new toy :o
Bob
Bob
04:51
in fact, never seen a double right click WinRT program before
... I think I'm getting used to this keyboard.
Bob
Bob
lol
does it have any weird key placement?
It's just smaller. That, and to use home/end/pgdn/pgup, I have to press the Fn key + arrow keys
thats pretty common on tenkeyless keyboards
Bob
Bob
eh, not bad
04:54
Yeah. And laptop manufacturers in general seem to enjoy being creative in key placement for those particular keys.
Bob
Bob
I have one where you have pageup/down, but home is fn + pageup and end is fn+pagedown, and both are tiny buttons :P
The optical touchpoint works pretty well but it's hard to lift my finger off it without moving the pointer around.
ya, even lenovo, with their giant dekete key
Heheh.
optical touchpoint? thats a new one
Bob
Bob
04:55
I keep hitting something else. Doesn't help my main laptop has them vertially along the right (I actually like this arrangement, it's quite easy to use)
@JourneymanGeek Think clit mouse but it's an optical sensor.
I think it uses IR or something. I see no light.
Bob
Bob
@sidran32 of all the names to use... :P
@Bob It's not my name :P
Bob
Bob
could be a capacitive sensor, like a shrunk down touchpad
Naw, they said it's optical.
04:57
oh, they used to be pretty common on phones
Bob
Bob
I don't really see how an optical sensor is meant to work with a small finger over the top, but meh :P
@Bob Just slide your finger over it. It's sort of like sliding your finger over the optical sensor of a regular mouse :P
Bob
Bob
@sidran32 which leads to either really jerky, short movement or no movement at all :\
evidently, this sensor is different
@Bob Yeah, but this is designed for this kind of usage, so it works. Just takes getting used to, like any other pointing device.
Bob
Bob
perhaps turning mosue acceleration off would help too
04:58
Per your comfort.
Bob
Bob
I meant the finger-on-underside-of-mouse
hm
would a question (and self-answer) on FF Elm's tab bar be too localised?
Dunno. Ok, I'm really going to bed now. Goodnight!
Bob
Bob
night
I wouldn't think so
@sidran32 nice, how thick is it?
Bob
Bob
05:03
@JourneymanGeek eh, worst case it can be closed if FF Elm changes :P
@Sathya finally got it working
06:01
just got a 'my computer is running slow' call from dad
thinks the system just needs a defrag, or something, but its too much of a PITA to know for certain long distance
wrong channel
... really not my week ;p
@JourneymanGeek really?
@JourneymanGeek last day i spent my 50 rep and earned it very soon just by 2 answers :)
@Bob hello :)
lots of computer issues
@JourneymanGeek what happen?
Bob
Bob
@avirk hi
@avirk hard drive failure, OS failure, boot failure
from what I heard anyway :S
3 messages moved from Ask a Super User Moderator
06:14
@Bob for him or for you :P
@Sathya hi! Hope Neelam is not hitting too much there :)
Bob
Bob
@avirk for @JourneymanGeek
Nilam's hitting the south east coast, not south central
@Bob then its normal for him :P
@Sathya hmmm, I really very far from the news, My sister was talking about its in the South but not the exact way on it.
However let's see when @allquixotic come back. Hope he is fine with his family.
@Bob: and issues installing linux, don't forget ;p
Bob
Bob
@avirk he was here last night
in fact, he reported in right after and said he escaped more or less unscathed
06:24
@Bob great, so i missed him as last night I was not here :)

A: Windows 8 does not provide option to choose which user have to login at welcome screen like Windows 7

Guy ThomasHere is a technique I used to achieve the reverse - hide users from the Welcome Screen in Windows 7. However, there is a 50% chance you could modify it to achieve what you want and show users in Windows 8. 1.Navigate to the Winlogon section of the registry, to be precise: HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsof...

I'm not aware to Plural and singular in Registry entry yet :P
@Sathya I don't have the measurements on hand but, comparable to the MacBook Air.
And... I should be sleeping :p
Dang portable computers. My bane!
@sidran32 nice, doesn't look so from the the pics
@sidran32 see ya!
:)
Yeah, I knew it would be thin but didn't expect it to be this thin, even still.
Goodnight!
06:49
@Sathya Do you want this for webapps? (would need a rewrite I guess) Or just close it here? superuser.com/questions/498201/…
Bob
Bob
o.O
wut.
Careers 2.0?
What is this...
@slhck not really, just close it
Bob
Bob
shrug
@Bob Pretty cool actually, but haven't used it nor am I planning to :P
lol
I got an invite from someone on AU
I have no idea what to put on it at the moment ;)
06:55
your name's hard, @slhck :P
AbhishekGirish juts google "Gmail pop frequency". Karthink +1. @slck, apologies. Any idea where I can ask this question? I googled, but had no luck. — Mawg 1 min ago
@Sathya I know right? I probably missed over 9000 pings already.
@slhck change it slack :D
@avirk Someone suggested to change it to shashlik
@slhck nah! sounds like a shampoo brand like Sun-silk :D
@slhck
you have windows 8 on atm right?
06:58
@MatthewWong No, I only run OS X, sorry
dam. anyone else?
@MatthewWong I guess everyone here runs Win 8 except for me :P
@MatthewWong i have 30 days trial ver.
i was going to ask you but it seems like you answered it already
@MatthewWong hahahah, but that will also call the snipping tool which OP don't want to.
07:09
OP doesn't want a lot of stuff.
@slhck still on Win 7 here, for all practical purposes
07:22
Just completed my blog post

ronalchnExperiences upgrading Windows 7 to 8 on an HP Pavilion dv6 laptop Having had a laptop preinstalled with Windows 7 for 2 years now, I decided to try to upgrade to Windows 8, especially since my university allows me to download Windows 8 free off DreamSpark. There are some obstacles to overcome, b...

@Sathya But I guess you've tested it though?
@slhck yes, release preview though, not the RTM version
@slhck: back to windows 7 for now ;p
heh
wut
-1. This smacks way too much of an advertisement for Win8 for my taste. An ad banner for the challenge site across the superuser main page and search result pages? Maybe I haven't been around long enough, but I've never seen one of those for a new version of, say, Ubuntu. Yes, superuser.com is also about OSs, but this seems to me to be an inappropriate way of getting our posters to bang the MS publicity drum. — aaamos Oct 30 at 0:34
might go back to linux if I can work out why I can't seem to install linux on it
07:31
lol
what happens?
had a horrible day yesterday
@slhck: gets stuck. I THINK its cause I'm running unetbootin off the same physical drive
but I know its worked before
hmm
just get a usb key?
ya ;p
need to go find one, its in this mess somewhere ;p
haha
this is the same day my windows 8 VHD stopped working, and I had to hunt down the saved game of a game that was on the VHD... and not in the obvious location
07:33
I have like 20 spare usb keys lying around here
damm
i wish i had that many
and my external HDD with all my music... well I accidentally converted it to a storage pool drive
The company I worked for gave them out for free
considered doing a recovery, then decided not to bother.. reformatted and restored from backup
07:34
Plus, in my father's office they also gave away some as presents to customers. Turns out 4000 of those USB keys were infected.
aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaarrrghhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh
I have that search bookmarked already.
banned?
07:38
No, technically not.
Click the Joe link again :P
I get a page not found ;p
07:40
ahh
So if you ever see a question by a guy named Joe with a yellow gravatar, feel free to flag for attention
lol
for mergification?
yup
superuser.com/questions/498216/… I feel a little sorry for his employer.
08:09
If I want to answer a question but there are two different ways of answering it, do I put both methods in one answer or do I make 2 separate answers?
same answer
just put a line split
OK, thanks
Bob
Bob
boot from livecd, reformat them one by one? :P

FREE FLASH DRIVES! :D
@njallam your choice
both are acceptable
if they're completely different methods, some people recommend separate answers
otehr people thing you're rep farming :\
but there's a reason you can add multiple answers
I feel if I post multiple answers, someone will just combine them and get all the credit.

Q: What is the official etiquette on answering a question twice?

Edward TanguayWhen is it ok to post two answers to one question on StackOverflow?

08:14
Well, no longer a problem. I just discovered the second method only works in Windows XP. Thanks for the help though.

Q: "The username or password is incorrect windows 7." without entering login details

njallamUsually when booting up a Windows 7, usually you are presented with the login screen. On my computer, I am first presented with this screen: After clicking OK, I can login with my correct details and the system lets me log in fine. At first I thought this may be because it was left idle and ...

@njallam there aren't 50 people here :P
@MatthewWong I just wouldn't mind a proof read - It's a Q&A post.
okay give me a min
i just did some rewording for the question
@MatthewWong Approved
Bob
Bob
@MatthewWong I don't think sharing from SE sites counts
especially not in oneboxed chat messages, since you need that special link with your userid in it
08:36
@Bob They don't
FFFFFFFFFFF I JUST GOT A DOUBLE BSOD AND I COULDN'T PULL OUT MY CAMERA IN TIME
Bob
Bob
wait what
double bsod?
and what's that got to do with pulling out a camera?
ohhhh
I thought you meant unplug a camera from the computer
still, what's a double bsod?
BSOD in VM and then BSOD on Host?
Bob
Bob
08:51
ouch
double bsod = two bsod's side by side
ah
Not this then^
Sounds like it should be on:
