Nothing virtual directory related... one of the components has become corrupt / did not update/remove and now it is buggered - can't manually remove/repair/reinstall
that refers to IIS/web virtual path I think - or it should be fed a directory... I am not entirely sure, but I don't think it should be that complicated.... something is corrupt as it just won't remove, even from programs and features...
For my iPhone, is there anyway to have gmail chat ping me, when a new chat occurs, and I am on another app? Unlike Android or Blackberry, I am amazed that I have yet not found anything that works well on the iphone for chatting with friends. Am I missing something here? Or is this just one of ...
@TomWij Filtered out success and down to 566 - but I can't see anything that makes me think there is an error - I think it is related to having a beta copy of that component, and I have basically buggered it up... should of uninstalled it before the service pack or something...
@wil: msicuu2 is still an option to force a hard removal, but it leaves behind permission problems in the registry so be careful, although I have a SU answer containing fixes if you experience them later
hmmm... Haven't used the clean up tool for ages... I don't really care about other errors as I have been meaning to reinstall Windows for ages (still got OEM crap on here)... so if it goes wrong... Il just restart from scratch
@TomWij I have even used reflector to take a look - it is a simple program... but I just don't know why it fails... I have taken a backup of the folder and deleted the original... going to try a few more things then going to plop it back if I still can't fix
When the MVC 3 setup starts, i took a copy of the temp folder and have all the files it calls - it is how I tracked it down to the aspnetwebpages.msi installer.... but even if I am manually able to do this - not sure why/how this fails and worried it will lead to other problems later on
I'm pretty sure your problem would be in either web.config or machine.config in one of these directories, if you do a Process Monitor trace of what happens and then go to the file summary table, there aren't much other things that happen.
And it kinda makes sense for such thing to activate itself in the config files, but you seem to have a virtual directory that prevents it from enabling itself.
the thing is, they will most likely be different - I installed the beta of this.... but it just seems to be buggered and won't uninstall... even if I was to copy your settings, there may be something, somewhere still there
first thing I am going to try... I just did an admin install of that MSI and extracted all files and it is very different... I wonder if it is worth a shot manually placing them in the correct folder and trying to run the msi again...
Just hope the admin install didn't do anything! :P ( superuser.com/questions/251128/… )... mind you, if it makes it work, I don't care if it does!
hmm, interesting - nothing in the folder and it just fails without writing a log... put the folder back (Even the new version) and the error and log file comes back
I dont even have IIS installed at the moment... I did, but uninstalled it when I had all this problem in case it was a component as I never used it anyway
(I don't use IIS anyway on here... I use .net development server OR deploy to my test server.... now IIS express is out, I doubt I will ever have IIS full on my development machine again)
Firefox tried to search for IPv6 before IPv4 - (I blogged about this very issue - blog.williamhilsum.com/2009/11/… ) ... ASP.Net Development server is not IPv6 compatible so it has to wait for a time out before it loads IPv4.... IIS is IPv6 compliant so it would of loaded fine
Google Chrome as "best supported HTML5" and IE9 to run through the compatibility modes to get my website run on older versions and bad supporting browsers.
I have not noticed any speed issues AFTER applying this ^^
installing IIS now... and, hope that does help you... as I said, development server should be instant and do everything that IIs full can apart from SSL and very few other things
I'd advise you to try something like EF Profiler. I think there's a free trial, which allows you to try it out. Basically, with it you can see what kind of things are happening internally with your EF app.
Another point to note: Is this by chance a web application? In my own project I found that...
hmmm... read quickly - wasn't the problem then that the query was wrong / bringing too much data? Ill shut up... Haven't looked at EF4 yet - next on my list after MVC3!
iis now installed
lol... thought it had worked... took a few seconds on updating root web.config file.... but then it failed like always!
LINQ = Langugae Integrated Query, allows you to run queries on various collections in the langugae, can be a list of integers, or as I often use it entities from my code first database.
@TomWij Just got a stack of domains registered and a huge load of paper with half arsed ideas for the sites... I only did a little asp.net webforms and now I am seriously learning c# and (trying to use) MVC, I am hoping to finally launch these things...
I will use whatever is easiest for speed and has the most samples... I can always change to best later!
I don't know if that sounds lazy, but already so many of my ideas have been released in some form.... I just need to get them done!
@TomWij I never actually had MVC 3 installed (AFAIK)... or if I did have it as part of web matrix, it uninstalled on trying to install mvc3 before failing on this component
...hmmm just had a hunch,... think I have found the beta installer in the webpi cache folder... should I try reinstalling this before using the clean up tool?
it installed fine!
webmatrix didn't install mvc3... going to try and see if I can remove now
@TomWij Very Very Very weird.... In the cache, I just managed to find both the new AspNetWebPages.msi and the original one... the new one comes up with the error and is a crc match for the one from the MVC3 new installation'.. the original one doesn't work... goes to first screen and the next button doesn't work
@TomWij Interesting... checked the registry and the uninstaller points to this msi which does not work... not sure if I can just copy the working one... but going to try!
I can't say for certain until I try, but from what he has said, SP1 changes the registry paths and by manually deleting, it works.... I had the beta of this component in and then did the service pack - I had no idea it would break it as it seems pretty robust - recently with VS service packs, you can install over beta without any problems
but... it's me - I can help people with problems all day long and then I always get something myself I can't solve!...
... probably should be closed, but I thought I would try to give him an advice answer at the same time so he comes back and doesn't just think we close everything! superuser.com/questions/256143/…
as a mod, would you just close things like this, or do you think it is nice to answer generically like that? (it does give information to others in similar situation... As Jeff said, give a fish, learn to catch or whatever...)
and... do you like the video!!! When ever people ask about upgrading so many components, I always think of that!
well done - yeah.. I just know that when I used to do things like that, it annoyed Diago - I still think it is for the best/can help others... even if I do bring down his wrath :S
hey @Wil I have this PC which is not part of a domain, yet the date/time keeps getting reset to current date, how can I prevent this?
I use this PC as a date change server for evaluating RL scenarios, it's a pain to have one transaction on future date and later have it reset to current date
You want it other than real date? If you just have one application you are doing it for, take a look at Nirsoft RunAsDate if it is the whole computer, go to services and disable Windows Time (W32Time)
ahh, sorry, I thought it was all just done for W32Time service... just checked on my machine and that is only set to manual...
You may already know as a warning... if this is VERY elaborate, just be careful as changing date/time can invalidate SSL certs and cause other sync errors
@Sathya ehh, what service pack is it (sorry. just not seen it disabled. been a while since I have last used XP, but I thought it just disabled the boxes, not the tab, so not entirely sure what is wrong)
The envelope is gone from next to my name! Â How am I supposed to check where those recent points came from? I don't remember the link to that page!
Edit: just to summarize the ways that the reputation graph does not make a suitable replacement for the /recent page:

@Sathya So sorry... went down, then dogs wanted to go outside and then needed to give a lift to the train station... right... bad news... Windows XP has that time tab.

My guess at the moment, as you can change the time, it is just disabled because time is such a critical component of a Windows Domain (Kerbos authentication - you can not log on to a domain with incorrect time), it does not allow it.... I know that W32tm command is linked to the w32time service, but I think the service is just for other computers to sync from you, not the other way round
you may want to try to disable the service, but I am really not sure that will help
