Having trouble nailing down whatever's causing msiexec.exe to run on startup in Windows 7. I've tried digging through msconfig already and knocking out any keys listed in there. Any other ideas?
@CristianCiupitu Well, I have only had one client buy them and on a 2 year old Core 2 Duo, there were no problems... (Windows 7 for 4k sector). Personally, I wouldn't buy them unless you have a real reason... Price per GB - much better getting 2TBs
I agree with the price/GB, but unfortunately I don't have enough SATA ports on my system to "afford" buying smaller disks. I prefer buying larger disks.
do you have any idea if that client used the HBA card provided by Western Digital?
@DMA57361 no idea! when I finish a chunk of work, I do Ctrl + t and quickly go to superuser... if I have just been testing/changing dns stuff, I get www stuck in my head!
my chrome start page because of that has both www and non, so I just pick one at random
@Wil There's a news conference going on at the mo in Japan but consensus from the native speaking viewers is that the speaker is just giving generic info and nothing specific
I bet that the anti nuclear lobby will be using this for decades to come... in a way it shows the dangers - but will be such a shame in the long run for everyone... just hope that future designs can learn from this... but, hopefully this is (less than) a once in a lifetime situation
@Nyuszika7H You can have three, but only one can be set to active
@Nyuszika7H one would most likely be recovery tools or similar, the bootloader/bios/efi at start - if you press a button to launch recovery tools, it will launch the other partition
if you use virtualisation, you can use disk2vhd and take a copy, then launch the other partition in a VM to mess around/take a look
I just quickly said this in chat, only two people were active and one person had the error, one person did not. I also tried it via hidemyass and it works fine, so I have no idea what is going wrong.
For me, going to http://www.superuser.com redirects to http://www.superuser.com/error?aspxerrorp...
@Nyuszika7H hmm... I can do it via hidemyass, and it is on my chrome/firefox which makes me think it is my route/isp - well, hopefully someone will tell me what is going on with the meta post
was risky posting it with DMA already saying he didn't do it... but I am confused... I am guessing DNS update gone wrong or similar
@Nyuszika7H can you quickly do a ping or nslookup www.superuser.com and just paste the ip
it shouldn't go that far out that quick... If you have never done a full cycle/discharge round, it probably just doesn't know... a few standard cycles for it to build a profile should be enough
the percentage is always reliable / reported by the battery - the minute counter is always guess work by the OS
I don't know if it's my last registry changes which outsmart the TDR BSOD to not happen by changing the trigger delays and setting the TDR mode different.
But it was around the same time this message came showing up...
So, my GPU problem could as well be due to power problems.
Logged on to Pro Webmasters and found that I have not made a account for it yet. I said to myself I says, that I have already made a account on it so I just continued and then I got an "Oops! Something bad happened error."
I then clicked the home button and found that I had to start from scratch...
Anything is possible, but, software should never be able to break hardware - EVER... should be components to monitor power and not allow critical levels..
I've had a 101 (X64_CLOCK_WATCHDOG_TIMEOUT_8_PROC) BSOD earlier, but I think that it was caused by software (ManicTime) hooking too much rather than related to the other probems.
btw I have some new weird problem where the computer won't come out of hibernate, it just gives me a black screen while the fans start working. Any suggestions?
@TomWij its a grey line! in an ideal world, the game should stop/graphics turn off or something when it reaches critical... should never fry... but it does make me wonder why viruses don't do things like this
mind you, nearly all modern "malware" is about doing damage to others or extorting money... very few actually do long lasting damage to the infected computer. I miss the good old MBR viruses and stuff!
GPU memory was fine too when I tested, it's making me more suspect to the battery problems now.
Last three shutdowns in Reliability Monitor:
3/8: CPU BSOD
3/3: Plugged power cable by accident when loving laptop closer, stupid battery!
2/28: Forgot to insert power cable, stupid battery!
And normally I have a GPU BSOD once or twice a week, now it goes back to 2/22 where the last 117 (TDR_TIMEOUT) occured where I think I changed the registry settings.
And the battery was near it's end there, why do those two events have to happen around the same time, it makes me clueless.
I have learnt my lesson with the recent things - Betas inside VMs! I always used to do that, but I meant to reinstall Windows so long ago, I didn't see the problem... then work comes and I just get on with it and haven't had a chance.
@IvoFlipse I am addicted to VMs! I would highly recommend you get a Windows 2000 one - I love it! starts in about 30 seconds... but... runs in next to no memory (mine has 128MB I think), resumes from paused in 5 seconds, pauses in 5 seconds... and runs .net / chrome fine. I use it as a base for so much stuff
To be honest, I love old computer stuff, if it wasn't for security holes, I would use XP now. It annoys me that I just fixed up a P4 machine (the fire board!) which runs Windows XP faster than my machine runs Windows 7 (which has double the points on CPU becnhmark).
@TomWij If we ever meet in person... have to show you something cool I have which I really can't say in public!
well, if either of you did come, I would happily pick you up from the airport (if you go to a London one / not too far away... Take a look on Google Maps for BR5)
@TomWij When I took my brother to Lille (So close to Belgium!) It cost about £40 return... However, I always get emails with £19 offers on slow days if you book in advance
Last one I can see, but expired a few days ago... Also, this is only for starting from Folkstone - You should register to their promotional news letter from your countries site
...although, with EU laws, officially everyone should be able to get same prices - just a shame no one ever sticks to them laws.
Or were you think of Euro Star rather than Euro Tunnel?
I'm waiting for my battery to charge to 100%... (it's charging now). Is there any tool which notifies me when the battery is fully charged? I often leave the battery charging because I just don't notice that it's charged.
Wife to husband, overheard in supermarket: "Oh, concentrated fabric softener doesn't work out cheaper than the normal stuff because I use the same amount of it..."
I was watching TV from my bed yesterday afternoon, it was 3pm UTC. After some minutes, I fall asleep, and I only woke up at 7pm. Then I couldn't sleep until 1am… :/
I also seem to be seeing rep entries for other people? "Answer was upvoted" but no +10 next to it, so I assume it was for a different answer in the same post as I have an answer?
Proposal: Computer Hardware
When I was browsing the proposed questions, I noticed that a lot of questions would be perfectly fine for Super User and the others are shopping recommendations, which goes against the FAQ of any Stack Exchange site as far as I know.

Great job on the blog!
After a call today with Ivo, we decided that the Super User Blog is now sufficiently awesome to be highlighted in the footer! You'll note that the blog link in the Super User footer now points to

If I start PowerShell from the Start menu, I get that fancy blue shell, but if I copy the path from the shortcut and run that, I get PowerShell in the old-school command prompt window…
Strange, I can't even run mysql from PowerShell. :/ I guess I need to resize mysql's window because there's not enough room for its fancy ASCII arts when I have tables with many columns.
