12:33 AM
Anyone around?

Of course not.

Having trouble nailing down whatever's causing msiexec.exe to run on startup in Windows 7. I've tried digging through msconfig already and knocking out any keys listed in there. Any other ideas?

Never use msconfig. There are always better ways to do things.
Try Autoruns.

I'd rather not download anything onto this particular machine.
(In other words, we'll probably be doing this the hard way with regedit or something.)

The really really hard way would be googling all the tabs that show up in the Autoruns screenshot.

12:38 AM
Oh, and strike Windows 7 - I'm in Vista with this problem. :-(

1 hour later…
1:41 AM
has anyone used a 3 TB drive on a machine with a Intel ICH8 chipset (Intel LT965P MB)?

Wil
1:59 AM
@CristianCiupitu What is the problem?

2:14 AM
I wanted to know if I could buy one
@Wil: I don't want any surprises. To buy it and then discover that it doesn't work with my system.

Wil
@CristianCiupitu Well, I have only had one client buy them and on a 2 year old Core 2 Duo, there were no problems... (Windows 7 for 4k sector). Personally, I wouldn't buy them unless you have a real reason... Price per GB - much better getting 2TBs

I agree with the price/GB, but unfortunately I don't have enough SATA ports on my system to "afford" buying smaller disks. I prefer buying larger disks.
do you have any idea if that client used the HBA card provided by Western Digital?
thanks for the feedback!

Hello, everyone.

Wil
2:41 AM
@CristianCiupitu Im sorry, no idea, just know they bought it and when I asked, they said it worked - didn't go in to specifics

2:58 AM
ok

2 hours later…
4:38 AM
@nhinkle at times, they'll take their sweet time
@TomWij @Brian you get a +100 rep bonus if you have an account on other Stack Exchange site with atleast 200 rep

1 hour later…
6:05 AM
Anybody know if pidgin support SE chat or if there's an api for it?

6:28 AM
@Sathya good to know. thanks :)

2 hours later…
8:03 AM
@KronoS not possible, unless you use @Josh / @TheOutofStarsExceptions' XMPP bridge

8:22 AM
Live Japanese TV - focusing on the Fukushima nuclear plant. Scary times.

morning all

Morning

yeah, scary times is quite a good summary :/

8:43 AM
"Entire Japan coast shifted 2.4 metres, earth axis moves ten inches"

wow...

Wil
Anyone else get the following on Superuser?...

any specific page?
seems OK here...

Not on main page

Wil
www.superuser.com comes up with that... took out the www and it loads for me

8:54 AM
ah... why were you using the www?/

Yup I get it with www added

I don't... just a redirect to the non-www as expected

Wil
@DMA57361 no idea! when I finish a chunk of work, I do Ctrl + t and quickly go to superuser... if I have just been testing/changing dns stuff, I get www stuck in my head!
my chrome start page because of that has both www and non, so I just pick one at random

@Wil f/e, I've got "su" bound to Super Users's search engine, so "su" gets here for me ;)

Wil
... I must of done it a lot a while ago, my default for "su" in the title bar goes to www. (my home page is pretty die hard SE!)

8:57 AM
lol

Wil
@DMA57361 Hmm... All three of us are England, so not entirely sure why it could/would be different between us

hmmm, no error in FF4, IE9 or whatever version of Chrome I have installed...

Wil
bloody hell - breaking news on BBC - been an explosion at the power plant...
Yeah, www. works on hidemyass as well- I wonder what is going on with me and @linker3000
just opened firefox and www.superuser.com doesn't work either..

@Wil There's a news conference going on at the mo in Japan but consensus from the native speaking viewers is that the speaker is just giving generic info and nothing specific

Wil
I bet that the anti nuclear lobby will be using this for decades to come... in a way it shows the dangers - but will be such a shame in the long run for everyone... just hope that future designs can learn from this... but, hopefully this is (less than) a once in a lifetime situation

9:03 AM
Hi! :)

Wil
@Linker3000 Thanks
@Nyuszika7H Hi!

How come I have two primary partitions on my HDD? One of them is FreeDOS, which came with my laptop, the other is Windows 7.

Wil
@Nyuszika7H You can have three, but only one can be set to active
@Nyuszika7H one would most likely be recovery tools or similar, the bootloader/bios/efi at start - if you press a button to launch recovery tools, it will launch the other partition
if you use virtualisation, you can use disk2vhd and take a copy, then launch the other partition in a VM to mess around/take a look

Disk Management says the FreeDOS one is active… strange.

Ah well - gotta get ready to go out. Catch you all later.

Wil
9:09 AM
bye
@DMA57361 I get the same error on serverfault.com - can you try

@Wil Don't work too hard!

Wil
@Linker3000 :( got so much to do... if there is a game later, I will try to break away for half an hour
0
Q: www.superuser.com down, superuser.com not down

WilI just quickly said this in chat, only two people were active and one person had the error, one person did not. I also tried it via hidemyass and it works fine, so I have no idea what is going wrong. For me, going to http://www.superuser.com redirects to http://www.superuser.com/error?aspxerrorp...

FD_BETA9SR2
186,30 GB FAT32
System, Active, Primary partition

Windows 7 (C:)
279,45 GB NTFS
Boot, Pagefile, Memory Dump, Primary partition
This is an approx. translation, my system is Hungarian.
@Wil Any ideas?

Wil
oh, sorry...
that isn't freedos at all, that is the standard Windows 7 boot partition - no problems what so ever

@Wil thanks :)

9:20 AM
@Wil I'd tried www.SO and www.SF already with no issue
and I've got to go shopping now...woo...cya all later

Wil
bye! good luck!

@Wil no repro in Chrome 11.0.696.3 dev

Wil
@Nyuszika7H hmm... I can do it via hidemyass, and it is on my chrome/firefox which makes me think it is my route/isp - well, hopefully someone will tell me what is going on with the meta post
was risky posting it with DMA already saying he didn't do it... but I am confused... I am guessing DNS update gone wrong or similar
@Nyuszika7H can you quickly do a ping or nslookup www.superuser.com and just paste the ip

@Wil 64.34.119.12

Same here (64.34.119.12) - not made it out the door yet!

Wil
9:26 AM
ditto :( oh well, there goes that theory!

Not relevant answer:
Name: superuser.com
Address: 64.34.119.12
Aliases: www.superuser.com
this is nslookup
I don't get why it says “not relevant”…

Not something with NoScript?

Wil
I just tried in privacy mode and still get it (no addons)... but this is server side

OK. Well, I am REALLY going now....
Bye

43 minutes (9%) remaining <-- How?

Wil
9:36 AM
@Nyuszika7H Battery?... Possibly not calibrated or very lucky!

@Wil I think I'll do a calibration today, it wasn't calibrated, and my laptop is about 1-1.5 months old.

Wil
it shouldn't go that far out that quick... If you have never done a full cycle/discharge round, it probably just doesn't know... a few standard cycles for it to build a profile should be enough
the percentage is always reliable / reported by the battery - the minute counter is always guess work by the OS

9:51 AM
This is what my battery says, it's properly inserted:
If I pull the plug, it only continues a few seconds on battery, pretty bad... :-/

@TomWij Is it a new battery, or is it old?

One year old.
Very far back up the transcript, I posted a similar message that said that the battery wasn't detected well.

Wil
Hmm... Had that once on my old laptop - Power board fried?

@Wil: I hope not, a later battery will tell so...
I don't know if it's my last registry changes which outsmart the TDR BSOD to not happen by changing the trigger delays and setting the TDR mode different.
But it was around the same time this message came showing up...
So, my GPU problem could as well be due to power problems.

Wil
...beyond me...
I still think you shouldn't have to make sacrifices/go down that route on such a new laptop!

9:56 AM
Perhaps the GPU malfunctioned because it got more or less power for a small amount of time, due to power board or battery problems.

I must be really cruel, but this made me smile:

Q: Five accounts seem to be lost, gone. Where have they disappeared?

BennyLogged on to Pro Webmasters and found that I have not made a account for it yet. I said to myself I says, that I have already made a account on it so I just continued and then I got an "Oops! Something bad happened error." I then clicked the home button and found that I had to start from scratch...

Wil
Anything is possible, but, software should never be able to break hardware - EVER... should be components to monitor power and not allow critical levels..

I've had a 101 (X64_CLOCK_WATCHDOG_TIMEOUT_8_PROC) BSOD earlier, but I think that it was caused by software (ManicTime) hooking too much rather than related to the other probems.

btw I have some new weird problem where the computer won't come out of hibernate, it just gives me a black screen while the fans start working. Any suggestions?

Wil
Otherwise... gives ideas for a hardware frying virus :S
@IvoFlipse Saw that, he answered a question with his name and age! no idea why :S

9:58 AM
@Wil: True, such components are there. But software has influence on the drivers and thus the card.

Wil

A: What are some good Apache settings to use with wordpress?

You can try lowering the file size in the admin panel for PHP and if that does not work try it in the wp-config.php file. Benny Age 12

@Wil: StarCraft II was a hardware frying virus back these days. ;-)

Wil
@TomWij its a grey line! in an ideal world, the game should stop/graphics turn off or something when it reaches critical... should never fry... but it does make me wonder why viruses don't do things like this
mind you, nearly all modern "malware" is about doing damage to others or extorting money... very few actually do long lasting damage to the infected computer. I miss the good old MBR viruses and stuff!

@Wil: Sure, but sometimes it stresses too much and it fries before the hardware STOP triggers.
Luckily, the critical temperature is said right for my GPU, but I don't think it triggers that temperature at all.

Wil
:(

10:02 AM
GPU memory was fine too when I tested, it's making me more suspect to the battery problems now.
Last three shutdowns in Reliability Monitor:
3/8: CPU BSOD
3/3: Plugged power cable by accident when loving laptop closer, stupid battery!
2/28: Forgot to insert power cable, stupid battery!

Wil
:(

And normally I have a GPU BSOD once or twice a week, now it goes back to 2/22 where the last 117 (TDR_TIMEOUT) occured where I think I changed the registry settings.
And the battery was near it's end there, why do those two events have to happen around the same time, it makes me clueless.

great my reliability index is at 3 or so atm @TomWij :(

Wil
@IvoFlipse I win!!! All my failed MVC installs has put me on 1!
well near

10:19 AM
I almost haven't had a day with a crash and I can't get my system out of hibernate properly...
Interesting the guy recommends: flexcart.com/members/elitefts/…
woops wrong room :)

10:36 AM
Further back, going back to installation date:

it's like SP1 is giving us all problems!

I've been running SP1 for a very long time.
Since July 2010.

My battery is not charging :( but it's at 47% and the charger is plugged in

Wil
Which SP1 are we all talking about?

Windows 7.

Wil
10:39 AM
I have learnt my lesson with the recent things - Betas inside VMs! I always used to do that, but I meant to reinstall Windows so long ago, I didn't see the problem... then work comes and I just get on with it and haven't had a chance.

Funny enough, the release version of SP1 is also around the time I changed the TDR settings and the battery was near dead. :-/

Wil
@TomWij I only installed it for the first time a few days ago!

I don't have VMs
though I'm starting to get convinced I should

I run beta's and even alpha versions all over the place, I barely have problems or at least no problems I can't easily solve.
Bleeding-edge software... xD

@TomWij beta = build 7000?

Wil
10:41 AM
@IvoFlipse I am addicted to VMs! I would highly recommend you get a Windows 2000 one - I love it! starts in about 30 seconds... but... runs in next to no memory (mine has 128MB I think), resumes from paused in 5 seconds, pauses in 5 seconds... and runs .net / chrome fine. I use it as a base for so much stuff

No, the beta version for SP1 was different.
But yes, I also had Windows 7 Beta back these days...
Won a serial for the Windows 7 RTM thanks to a forum competition which required one to write a Windows 7 article.

Wil
To be honest, I love old computer stuff, if it wasn't for security holes, I would use XP now. It annoys me that I just fixed up a P4 machine (the fire board!) which runs Windows XP faster than my machine runs Windows 7 (which has double the points on CPU becnhmark).
@TomWij If we ever meet in person... have to show you something cool I have which I really can't say in public!

You're making me wonder now...

my windows 7 boots in 30 seconds :P
so after the Dutch meetup, we'll have to go to England @TomWij :P

Wil
@IvoFlipse :) Considering all the Americans... Us 3 are so close, yet so far!

10:47 AM
@IvoFlipse: Same here, on average, with a quick look 25 seconds seems to be fastest, but I could trim it down if I want to.

I'm not far away, ryanair to london, done!

Similar for me, either by airplane/boat/tunnel.
But boat would be slow, I think...
And I don't have a car for that tunnel either. :D

Wil
@TomWij Air is the cheapest by far. It is crazy if you book in advance on budget air lines (and have no/little baggage).

13 mins ago, by Nyuszika7H
My battery is not charging :( but it's at 47% and the charger is plugged in

@Wil: Yeah, at vacation times it's like a pain, but at a day like this and far ahead it's indeed cheap. :-)

Wil
10:52 AM
well, if either of you did come, I would happily pick you up from the airport (if you go to a London one / not too far away... Take a look on Google Maps for BR5)

@Nyuszika7H: Don't worry, have you tried rebooting?
I've had Windows incorrectly pick the information in the past too (other laptop, no battery issues whatsoever).

@TomWij no, thanks for the tip

@Wil: Antwerp - Gent - Ostend - (Tunnel) - Ramsgate - Chatham - London looks nice, if I had a car license I would consider donig it by car.
Dunno how much the tunnel costs though...

Wil
@TomWij When I took my brother to Lille (So close to Belgium!) It cost about £40 return... However, I always get emails with £19 offers on slow days if you book in advance

Note to self: For anything, look for offers and book early.

Wil
10:59 AM
Last one I can see, but expired a few days ago... Also, this is only for starting from Folkstone - You should register to their promotional news letter from your countries site
...although, with EU laws, officially everyone should be able to get same prices - just a shame no one ever sticks to them laws.
Or were you think of Euro Star rather than Euro Tunnel?

After restart, it says 32 minutes (91%) remaining. How can I calibrate my battery? I can't find an option for that in BIOS.
Now it's 51 minutes (86%). I've found an answer, so I'm going to calibrate my battery. See you later!

@Wil: Euro Tunnel, by car. Train seems nice too, but that seems to cost a lot though...

Wil
@TomWij a lot more and I don't think they do offers very often

11:15 AM
I'm waiting for my battery to charge to 100%... (it's charging now). Is there any tool which notifies me when the battery is fully charged? I often leave the battery charging because I just don't notice that it's charged.

I would probably just fly @TomWij, ryanair is like 70 euro return or less

Any answers?

11:36 AM

sorry I have none

12:20 PM
I am further worried about the future of humanity...

show me the link! :D

Wife to husband, overheard in supermarket: "Oh, concentrated fabric softener doesn't work out cheaper than the normal stuff because I use the same amount of it..."

or are you aiming at Japan and their nuke plant?
d'oh!

Not me, my earthquake machine points at america, I'm not sure it works too well at the moment

When I walked past them I could have sworn the husband :eyerolled: at me...

@IvoFlipse lol

I'm sure he did, I feel his pain

It does seem to be earthquake season, we'll soon be into Godzilla season and we all know what that means...

12:26 PM

Tired @Nyuszika7H?
Up late partying?

yep
I was watching TV from my bed yesterday afternoon, it was 3pm UTC. After some minutes, I fall asleep, and I only woke up at 7pm. Then I couldn't sleep until 1am… :/

Lol @Mokubai, I just can't resist the urge to brag:

Yowza, wasn't that site only in closed beta last week or something?

it is
1 answer is on a now closed question, so it probably won't get accepted
another is on one of my own, so I'll hold out with answering it

12:39 PM
I'd bow to your fitness expertise, but it's a bit of a strain what with me being so unfit...

howdy again all

hi @DMA57361
what do you mean unfit @Mokubai? you can breath and walk right? :P

got me an electricity meter for the house, something to play with for a few days... :)

12:57 PM
to measure each socket or ?

nope, the whole house
it has a meter than clamps round one of two input lines on our meter
so right now we're using 380W
apparently

lol, it's wireless or something? that you can track it through the computer?

yes and no
got it free from the electricity supplier when I renewed my tariff

nice :)
Bobby's flag weight is already up to: flag weight 615.9192

now I just have to work out how much everything in my house uses... :/
@IvoFlipse what about the y-guy who's name I forget?

1:01 PM
flag weight 748.7805

@MattJenkins howdy
@IvoFlipse it's live?

it is indeed :)

Ohhhh.... nice

they've not redirected the footer's "blog" link yet

Where has the pretty rep graph wandered off to today?
Every time I come here something has changed about the profile system, and today it's the rep graph that has turned into a list of text :(

yeah, they're really messing with it at the mo
hadn't noticed the graph had gone

you've caught the site in a state of flux ;)
they hired one of the top users from SO to mess with all these features atm

I see

1:37 PM
h/o, does the new reputation page so all rep changes?! it goes back to June for me :/

I only see back to February, but then that's when I joined....

hmmm
minor privacy issue as well maybe: -1 Downvoted a post (to the owner it shows a link to the post)

howdy

@Sathya hey

the site seems to have really increased in response time

1:43 PM
I also seem to be seeing rep entries for other people? "Answer was upvoted" but no +10 next to it, so I assume it was for a different answer in the same post as I have an answer?

@MattJenkins you can get upvoted with no score if you've hit the rep cap for the day
the limit is 200 points from votes per day

Ah, gotcha
so the 260 is 200 from votes and 60 from accepts... ok

yeah, accepts, bounties and I think the +2 for edits are not capped, only votes

Shame about that cap - I'd have much more rep otherwise ;)

indeed

1:47 PM
that might be due to the SSDs @Sathya if they have already switched to them

think I've only capped about thrice :/

I have capped a lot when the site was new
and on fitness quite some times :P

lol
we only have 3 people with the silver capping badge (50 times)...

I've hit it 10 times

Well, I have 5 days of >200 total, so I suppose I have capped 4 or 5 times (not dug into the contents and quite frankly I can't be (o)'d)

1:49 PM
@MattJenkins I think it tells you at the bottom of superuser.com/reputation

@IvoFlipse there was an upgrade yesterday iIRC

days represented 14
rep cap was reached via rep from upvotes *only* on 5 days
rep cap was exceeded on 6 days

heh, I've got 3 and 4

I like it too, but we only need one

They should put their efforts into transport tubes like in Futurama

It is a pretty odd question to begin with tho...

A quick question.
If I start PowerShell from the Start menu, I get that fancy blue shell, but if I copy the path from the shortcut and run that, I get PowerShell in the old-school command prompt window…

Gah, why isn't Date.parse working D:

@MarkSzymanski probably an ES3 env

4:03 PM
@Nyuszika7H: What?

hey guys

@MarkSzymanski Isn't it an ES5 function?

Hi @studiohack.
@Nyuszika7H: No, Ruby.

hey @MarkSzymanski how are ya?

I'm doing great, thanks.
you?

4:04 PM
@MarkSzymanski Oh, I thought it's JavaScript.

Nah :P

fine, just plain tired lol @MarkSzymanski

So, any ideas?

@Nyuszika7H: Sorry, I don't use Windows. So no ideas here :P

4:07 PM
Strange, I can't even run mysql from PowerShell. :/ I guess I need to resize mysql's window because there's not enough room for its fancy ASCII arts when I have tables with many columns.

Awesome

Whoo! It works! :D

@IvoFlipse that's a thought

if only to let the developers know we love them so much

@IvoFlipse Nah. The only connection I have to that game is the fact that a pretty big TF2 forum uses unicornify :)

lol, but don't you want to play against your own users? :P

neither are most of us :P
