@KronoS Hello. What is your opinion on female gamers?
@Boris_yo Um... I'm cool with them. Why?
@KronoS Just as mechanics, I don't think gaming is suitable for girls.
Why?
@KronoS Because it is a men's job. FPS, action are for men.
so with that same logic then women shouldn't be in the military?
21:05
@KronoS Depends on which duty. Secretaries? They can be! Why not? Medics? Why not? Soldiers on battlefield? Not sure.
@Boris_yo Are you trying to be sexist and incite a flame war?
@allquixotic No, what gives?
There are many people who would tell you that there is no such thing as a "men's job" or "women's job", and they are just as certain of that fact of reality as you seem to be about gender roles.
@Boris_yo your statements can be viewed as very sexist
Taking a stance on a controversial subject that can offend a fundamental belief of (many!) other people, and waving that stance around as if it is the only possible truth, is extremely insensitive.
If you weren't aware of the fact that there are people who think that gender roles are a culturally-induced myth, then please google the term "feminism".
Once you realize how heated the debate can get, I would advise you to, thenceforth, cease speaking of it in here, as it is not only quite off-topic, but very potentially inflammatory.
21:08
@Boris_yo while I do agree that there are some jobs (like being a mom) that women are very good at, that doesn't mean that they can't be other things that are typically considered men only
only a few years ago they were only supposed to be house wives and any that were in the work place were considered odd and incapable (just watch a few episodes of Mad Men)
Note that I am neither advocating your belief nor anyone else's belief by advising you to be cautious. I am merely alerting you that you are talking about a subject that is very contentious, and these topics are a poor choice for SE overall. It'd be like talking about gun control, or abortion, or democrats vs republicans (at least these topics are very, very contentious in the US).
Or perhaps another topic you can relate to: it'd be like talking about religion.
which you can discuss here (kinda):

 The Upper Room

General discussion for Christianity.SE, pseudo-meta support, a...
Right. But the religion-focused sites on SE are more geared towards facts about those religions, and not, say, one religion compared to another, or the merits or morality of observing a religion, and so on. But the problem is that discussion about gender roles almost immediately becomes that type of conversation...
@allquixotic Nothing impacted my opinion. I just feel that if my girlfriend was FPS gamer or truck mechanic I wouldn't have liked that.
And you are perfectly entitled to your opinion.
21:14
@allquixotic This is what I've tried to say. I am not promoting or advocating sexism, feminism. I am just showing my humble opinion.
You know about the pitfalls of talking about, say, why C++ is better than Java, or why C# is better than Ruby, right?
Like, what if you chatted in SO chatroom, or asked a question about why some language is better than another. There'd be a lot of debate and controversy, right?
@allquixotic Or why Windows is better than Linux and vice versa?
@Boris_yo Yes. Exactly!
If you can understand that, then you can understand why discussion of gender roles is just as inflammatory. So, while your opinion is perfectly fine, expressing that opinion is inviting the type of debate that can quickly get out of hand.
@allquixotic And if I asked why Windows is better than iOS?
@Boris_yo We're not trying to say that you're not entitled to your opinion, but rather you should refrain from sharing it unless you are intending to start a debate, and as such are in an appropriate location for such.
21:17
In my experience, the general consensus on SE sites is that we want to avoid discussing topics that, for one, can't be decisively resolved in conversation; both sides can essentially "go on debating forever", and will proceed to get more and more angry as the conversation proceeds.

What if I said here that Windows is better than Linux? Would that be considered Windowsism?
It would be considered inflammitory
@Boris_yo Well, that type of statement isn't as personal (for most people) as something like gender roles, so you'd probably get a few laughs and jabs. Unless you really started making remarks about, say, the quality of work of people who work on free software, or something like that.
The thing that really sets, say, gender roles apart from Windows vs Linux is that it's really personal to each person, and many people feel VERY strongly about it.
It's not something that you can really joke about... it's not light subject matter.
By comparison, I'd welcome an OS debate in here, as it would be far less heated than a discussion about feminism or sexism.
Anyway, I'm going home from work. I think our best solution at this point is simply to stop engaging in this conversation, because it's almost turning into a meta debate about the issue, and that in itself is dangerous. Dropping it would be.... most advisable.
Subject change strongly recommended; anyone have a question on SU that needs answering? Post 'er up here!
(as I depart)
@allquixotic I have got your point. If I was in discussion with Bill Gates and Linus Torvalds and was stating that Windows is better than Linux, I would hurt Linus or started fight in the end.
@Boris_yo Okay, thank you for your understanding. Next topic!
21:23
@allquixotic Next topic would be "Should write-cache flushing be disabled on SSD?"
I bring that question up again because I think you have missed it previously.
@soandos I was able to connect during setup:
I think you must have something wrong with you switch
BTW that was using the wireless NIC card
21:46
@KronoS, I think it has to do with my NIC
I was talking about snag.gy/itmbN.jpg at the bottom though
@soandos if you mean that, then yes mine does say that
22:06
got it. Btw @KronoS, what are you usingt o make those images?

Q: How do I group icons in the Start menu of Windows 8?

KronoSI love the new start menu of Windows 8 but I would like to be able to organize my icons into sections. How do I organize my app icons in Windows 8?

@soandos snaggit... it's awesome
thanks
@soandos so did you get it fixed?
22:39
ha ha! Figured it out:

A: How do I group icons in the Start menu of Windows 8?

KronoSIt's actually pretty easy. Groups are created by dragging an icon in between two other groups: Simply organize your icons into the groups that you want. If you're looking to make the icons smaller you can do that by right-clicking (press and hold on tablets) on the icon and select Smaller: ...

@allquixotic @studiohack centreno = core 2 + intel wireless + some other stuff. Its what they called the platform. Nothing to do with remote access.

@JourneymanGeek awesome... what do you think of it? worth it?
@studiohack: Well, powerful enough for quite a bit
Like I said earlier, its in my Dell Latitude E6400 @JourneymanGeek. Seems to be a decent beast, enough that I'm contemplating trying to sell some of my older, cheaper laptops and getting one)
(my work machine)
Its about as worth it as any decent 3-4 year old system. The nice thing with the platform is you can run linux or most versions of windows on it
yeah, mine runs Win7 with ease. the screen resolution is good too.
looks alright
fairly skinny too
23:57
@JourneymanGeek it is nice, I like it
and thats important ;p
Laptops like that are why I like Dell. but I'm starting to lean more Lenovo.
I want the x220 tablet, after Win8 comes out.
but I'm worried about it being my main machine, it being so small
we'll see, I suppose.
did you see the IBM Thinkpad gem I found earlier today @JourneymanGeek?
utter envy ;p
that particular model is legendary
:P really?? the paper with it said it was $3450ish back in the day!
incredible!
