@MikeMestnik So - the tendancy for folks is to figure they can ask the 'quick question' - and the entire interaction for them is just asking questions and nothing else. The rule of thumb is you can discuss a problem, but at some point we're going to refer you to the main site
stuff on chat is lost. Main site's useful for everyone
@bertieb RTX has ML specific cores, but for general, less efficient number crunching, the older quadros are cheap, and give you redunculous amounts of ram at times
@MikeMestnik "I get bad responses on the site" isn't a great reason to use here as a proxy :D

@JourneymanGeek Oh aye, I had a look at one of the server ones last year
the ones without any display outputs
but it was v v old and probably -- haven't done the maths -- my phone could do most things quicker ;-P

@bertieb I was looking at them. Apparently you can't render directX on them without mysterious modded drivers no one knows about

Ah yeah
for remote gaming type things
Stadia @ Home
hypothetically

I think this was related to @bob needing a terabyte of vram to run firefox...

Oh yeah, that too
in the other place

1:20 AM
Unlike aibobot's latest answer, our solution was actually elegant

Oh I'm sure
One man's hack is another man's elegant

(render firefox on the onboard GPU)

Hm, that sounded positive in my head but now that I read it it looks disparaging
which isn't the intent

@bertieb uh, latest answer "use a hardware dummy display, use that to render the game, then use OBS to broadcast that to the physical monitor"

speaking of discussions
dummy GPU or dummy display?

1:22 AM
fixed that

ah yea

I have a bunch of those HDMI dongles in use for various things

nbd, that's what I thought, but then I've been questioning my sanity at times recently, so ;-P

I use one to cover up the output port on my airgap defeat toolkit video capture device, one on my download box so nomachine will work without complaining and one spare

seems reasonable
3 seems about the right number for a person to have

1:24 AM
on the gripping hand, they are cheap
lol
I can't actually imagine a normal person needing even 1

heh yep :P
and we're all normal, right?
...don't answer that ;-P

I don't think anyone else here has one :D

speaking of discussions, do we have anything on... unorthodox data recovery methods?

say a hypothetical person wanted to ddrescue something

1:26 AM
technically I'm the SME
and I wouldn't have done anything you didn't

SME?
small to medium enterprise?

subject matter expert

oh
the only unorthodox thing I can think of is the old "put it in an airtight bag with some dessicant and pop it in the freezer"
for such a hypothetical scenario

I'd try installing it directly
only if you suspected a head crash

say hypothetically all the mobo ports were in use, and even the PCI-SATA card ports too

1:28 AM
I'd make space :D
BUT I do have a spare pc for this sorta thing

say that would hypothetically degrade an array...
(making space)

the errors you are showing are ... strange
Oh!
Smart tests?

me..? :D

oh, we know you are dumb

this is purely hypothetical

1:29 AM
but have you run smart tests on the drive?
hypothetically

hehe
hypothetically the drive almost certainly complained about things that would be counted as a SMART failure
and SMART tests can't be run because it doesn't stay on the bus long enough to show up
it's probably not a bus anymore but you know what I mean

which also comes back to it feels like its the hypothetical enclosure
Its a very... short bus? that keeps exploding a lot?

oh it's out the enclosure
it doesn't stay on even with a hypothetical USB-SATA adapter that works fine for other internal drives

My guess is hypothetically, you're not getting enough power under load...
hm
Would you hypothetically have a spare PSU?

(mains powered USB-SATA adapter)
@JourneymanGeek lol
yes but uh
it's kinda already been pressed into frankenserver service
which I guess means it's not spare

1:34 AM
as long as it has spare sata ports
use that for power, use USB for data?

that I would have to check

oh, but you have an all in one plug

ah yes
on this one

this is why everyone needs to move to the same city

I have another, much older, much more hypothetical USB-SATA+IDE adapter

1:35 AM
I'd be like "Ok maurice! Stop faffing around and pop on by and borrow my old PC and get this settled"

but it's pretty dicey
hehe

we don't need it to work. We need it to fail differently

I did that the other day when my internet connection dieded
got a spare modem from a friend
proved it wasn't the modem at fault :D
@JourneymanGeek fair point, could give that a shot assuming there was a spare SATA power cable hanging off the PSU
but it made the same angry beepy noises that it did in the enclosure when I plugged it in
plug in → spin up → seeking sounds → "oh maybe this time itll-" → beeps of anger

wait. IT BEEPS?

yea

1:38 AM
Do drives even have speakers?

well I dunno
tiny piezoelectric thing maybe?
or maybe it's the motor being angy
I can record it
because why not

what brand?
what model?

Seagate Barracuda 3TB thing from 2013
was in a USB enclosure
called "Desktop Expansion" probably
cause they're all called that

> Seagate hard drives do not contain audio speakers. Some failure mechanisms may make a regular repeating beep from the computer's internal speaker. This may or not be hard drive related. Check your system documentation for an explanation of system beep codes. If a drive failure is possible, it is always important to make an immediate backup.
Two hard clicks at start up and then a boot error message or system shutdown is a symptom of a failed drive. Check your cables and connections in case they might have gotten loose. You can use SeaTools for DOS to diagnose the drive. If SeaTools fails
hah
yet
Heads could be stuck 0_0
Ave @Ave!

lemme grab my phone, go upstairs and take a screenshot/recording
(5mins)
oh hey that went thru finally
got the vid
@JourneymanGeek At first I thought you meant me because I'd disappeared
then I realised, and that's... much worse ;-P

1:55 AM
or your average run of cyberppunk 2077....

click, click cliiiick.... BEEP

SE-Matrix
some swearing it needed

nods

2:00 AM
Now that I got that out of my system
The scratchy noises are mechanical

lol
it's not a happy drive

which is bad

waffles

the beeping is ineffable

yeah

2:00 AM
There is no conceivable reason it could beep.

can't be eff'd
and yet!

You might need a young priest and old priest, and several tankers of holy water...

Ha!
it actually does sound like there's a wee static-like pop after the beep

and before

may be my imagination, or unrelated

2:02 AM
that skeeze da skeeze da skeeze
is probably your heads dragging across the platter

I assume that's some sort of seek
but right after there's a quiet electrical pop
I should really get the drive in a quiet room to record it
as opposed to next to two servers
but that probably wouldn't tell us anything different
and the background noise adds authenticity

I am now leaning towards mechanical issues or not enough power.
the former is "there's no hope"

could be taken in a high-tech, professional datacentre
oof

So...
a quarter rack in a store room with 2 fans and a portable aircon pointing at it?

that would be professional compared to my setup, yes :P

2:05 AM

notice how I was careful to stay real tightly zoomed in on the drive ;-P
oi XKCD, quit being funny
weah talkin' heah!

Ave
@JourneymanGeek huh?

@Ave smartass way of saying hello ;D

Ave
Yeah but why the ping
I'm confused
Like nothing wrong with that
but context is confusing

No context ._.

Ave
2:07 AM
Ah
Wwell
heyo!

(actually wasn't sure of the etiquette there ;D )
or which ave needed the @ for maximum humour

I'll dig out the other, super-dodge USB adapter
and see about powering it otherhow
oh
would the wall-to-SATA transformer thing I think I might have do instead?
lemme grab my box-o-tricks
right, found the doohickeys
bear with me
@JourneymanGeek Powered it using the wall to SATA thing I have
same noises

annd?
ya
I'm leaning towards head crash
the freezer trick MIGHT work as a last resort

even without the data hooked up
are there any other resorts..?
cause I'm running out of ideas

but the drive is an ex-drive. Its pining for the fjords. It is long past its time. Its bits rotted, its bytes taken. If would be falling off its perch if it was a bird and wasn't nailed to it.

2:20 AM
aw
muh datas

two options
Percussive maintainance (seriously) or freezing
Assuming there's nothing in there worth a professional

eesh

some folks claim you can unstick a hard drive by thumping it hard on a table
Its a terrible idea of course

how hard are we talking for this thump?
cause my table might not enjoy it
but the rubber mallet I have might do the trick

just a light tap
its one of those stories I've never quite believed.

2:23 AM
fair enough
not much to lose here
question is... which first? :D

hm
wierdly
I think the light tap/drop is safer

yeah, you're probably right there
but if the heads are parked, how would it work?
hmm

ah
if the heads were parked, they wouldn't be making that noise

ah yea, fair point
might be coming from the hypothetical speaker ;-P
> As per a now-deleted post Harddrive in the freezer ever work for you? on SuperUser, two alternative-medicine remedies to try before freezing are:

> (1) "Place the hard drive on a smooth surface. Grab the ends and physically spin the whole unit around", "just spinning the unit sharply along the axis of the blades" and

> (2) "In situations where the head has crashed, you can temporarily get it up and running by turning the drive upside down. Keep the drive upside down while you back up your files.")

if you can link me the post, I can get a screenshot
... actually...

2:32 AM
it's ye olde poste
6+ years
so actually about as old as the drive
not that that's relevant, just coincidence
so if I combine all the advice, I drop the drive lightly in a freezer and run it upside down while spinning the freezer in the opposite direction of the platters' rotation
have I got that right?

don't forget the young priceest and the old priest

taps head
good point

3:08 AM
alreet
it's in the freezer
thanks for the time spent on that geek
I appreciate the input
will update if there's any output or not

5 hours later…
8:10 AM
In a bag in the freezer?

8:33 AM
@bertieb I had that work once about 30 years ago ... never had to try it since.

9:09 AM
@DavidPostill hah. I realised 2 things
most data is worthless, and anything worth keeping is worth backing up.
@bertieb If it is dead, I'd appreciate if you opened it up and checked for a speaker.
THAT BEEP

3 hours later…
11:52 AM
@Hennes Yup, two sealable freezer bags
@JourneymanGeek Hehe, sure
Not sure if I should run it upside-down when it comes out the freezer

2 hours later…
1:43 PM
I think the upside down was in case heads crashes on the platter.
Also not sure how well things work depending on drive generations.
I suspect it is a lot more touch and go
For an OLD drive (10BB, 2 platter, 4 head) with failure on head 0 we just rewired things.
And yes, MB. Not a type got GB or TB
put in floppy disk. Load BIOS (well, kickstart).
put in OS disk, load amiga OS, creating reset surviving ramdis (RAD:). Initilisae MRF driver. Reboot from HDD and cheer

2:24 PM
@bertieb Ok Uncle Ben. ;)

@Michael That's Grandpa Maurice

2:44 PM
Humans all look alike to me.

3:09 PM
Sure skynet :)

Q: We’re adding more user controls for cookie consent

DesUpdate: We’ve rolled out the new cookie settings to the following four sites: Super User, Cross Validated, TeX-LaTeX, and Database Administrators As part of the recent updates designed to create more transparency and give our users more control, we’re making some updates to how users can provide...

We're getting this. I might post to our meta in the morning if no one else beats me to it

Those "slider" controls can be so confusing sometimes. Hard to tell if you've turned something on or off.
In this case, it looks like it turns green when it's "on".

@Michael :o Does that mean I die in every film?
@Hennes Did you dump the stuff in the trash can yet? I'v been wondering about whether it would be worth me investigating shipping costs

4:06 PM
I have not dumped anything yet
But I have ordered shiny new stuff
Gigabyte B550 Aorus Master Socket AM4 ATX AMD B550
AMD Ryzen 9 5900X processor 3,7 GHz 64 MB L3
BK022 Be Quiet Dark Rock Pro 4 Processor Koeler
PVB416G413C8K Patriot D416GB 4133-18 Viper 4 Blackout K2 PAT x2
Samsung MZVL22T0HBLB-00B00 (2TB, 4x PCI-4)

I still need to order a case (probably a be silent 810)
I will try to use my graphioc (GTX 1080) and PSU
Interestingly enough, I realise the my current desktop (I6600K, 95W TPD), 1080 etc all workes fine on a single 450w PSU
And the new setup only has a 10W higher TPD

@bertieb Yep, sorry. :)

Ecxcept is Disney movies?
BRb rebooting to shange sound settings (yes, windows)

4:48 PM
Gah.
How hard can it be to just play audio though multiple devices at the same time?

5:14 PM
I use Voicemeeter on windows as a virtual mixer and it can do that
pulseaudio can no doubt do it on Linux but not sure how off the top of my head
@Hennes Have you decided on what you're doing with it, if i were to investigate?

I'll happily ship you some stuff rather then putting it in trash. Reuse is much better.
Weightwise, it will be interesting how much we can ship. And if the price of shipping is the same between weight X and weight X+1
I guess I could look things up, I just have been lazy lately

Yeah, weight and size make things interesting
I'd be happy to do the legwork investigating
but would need some info that borders on PII

nods
which country did you live in again?

UK, Scotland
(we're sorry)

5:34 PM
Ah fun. lets see what is shipping at all (some delivery services are on hold :( )
DDP Austria to UK was a nogo last month. Not that I am in Austia but I did not check NL ones yet

Yeah, everything as suspended late september for a few days with the new variant
and businesses are having fun with our new tax thingy
the latter shouldn't apply here tho

1 hour later…
7:00 PM
You triggered me to do a cleannup of old hardware. Dust everywhere now :)
And a huge box... AMD 5870. (2012 era).
That one certainly is not worth shipping. Nor keeping.

7:15 PM
My desk right now:....
Which is the most fun I had in a year. I did not realise that I missed these things
Not shown: A few KG of dust behind all the boxes before I pulled them out of storage.

1 hour later…
8:44 PM
@Hennes That's only a couple years older than the graphics card in my PC (970)

I have a 940 (windforce) as spare card

despite calling my computer a potato on a regular basis, I kinda forget how long ago it was actually built
kinda funny

I am finding receipt attached to notes in case. PSu... 2008

in my head I'm like, "ah it's only, what 3-4 years old"

And ofc lacking the connector I need for the new board. But ok, it served its time

8:46 PM
reality: "its seven this year"

I looked up the graphics cards which I use... Fun fact. PCIe v2, 1GB RAM, 50 Watt via external connector
Granted, the last sounds just about enough to cool

eGPU?

I am looking at block diagrams of a motherboard.
Socket M2c_CPU (fed from the CPU)
Socket M2b_CPU (fed from the CPU)
Socket M2a_CPU (fed from the **chipset**)
No. old card just wer elower powered

oh right I see what you mean

No idesa what my first dedicated card even would use (tjeng ET4000. With all the RAM to do 1024x768 in about 16 colours
Aoording to their website that Z170 board is about 3 pounds in weight (excluding packaging)

8:51 PM
so about a kilo and a half?

Which is only slightly more than the dark rock cooler.
Talk about ratios :)
nods

lol

I find it hard to convert. I just google it

my brain's wired mostly for kg

8:52 PM
lbs feel a bit like how I imagine a second language would

Ditto here. But webpage claim 3.19 pound.

fair dos

I have no problems with english, or understading german.
But inches, feet, pounds and cups throw me off
Strangly enough miles do not
Buy maybe that is because it is easy to convert. Even in my head. Add half and add 10%. Mile -> km done

9:32 PM
feet and inches are fine for me if they're close to human size
a cup is just the size of a cup, I guess?
only ever really use that for baking
or cooking rice

9:46 PM
Apparently it is about one third of the size of cup I first assumed
And tea spoons are also not tea spoon sized but a one specific size.
Also, USA cup and GB cup might difffer

that's true
like gallons, ton[ne]s and other stuff seems to vary

10:17 PM
nods.
I tend to google a few of such sites if I have a recipe and then add translations to my notes
