12:33 AM
@OliverSalzburg @slhck Well, most things work fine. Swype had a few problems, but clearing its data worked.
Also, the Samsung/ICS version of Swype is nowhere near as accurate as the (rather old) beta I was using :\
Oh, how did your jailbreak go, @slhck?

We broke 2K in the LQ queue
@Bob have you set the swype accuracy slider to maximum?

Bob
@Paul Yep. Ah well.

@Bob What phone is it? I am running swype beta on an S2, and had the same ics accuracy issues but this resolved it (or possibly I became more accurate to compensate)

1 hour later…
1:48 AM
anybody in the EU and online ATM?

2:24 AM
@KronoS no. What do you need from the EU?

@nhinkle working on the blog post. Was hoping to get a screen shot of what the prompt was for EU's new cookie law

ah. tried google images?
what about a proxy?

no not yet... I just started
was going to get the content done first then pics and stuff

ah. well, try a proxy maybe

@nhinkle I'm too lazy right now to setup a proxy lol

2:27 AM
It's easy. Google "proxies"
I'm not saying to do a full SSH tunnel, just find a web proxy

Oh I know... I'll probably do that a little later. First I wanted to get the post written up first

@KronoS do you know of a site that ought to show it?

Bob
@Paul S2 variant (Chinese I9100G, the firmware is incompatible with the other I9100Gs (unknown reason), which is incompatible with the normal I9100s (hardware)). Flashing is a pain.

@nhinkle no, but any site that is hosted in the EU or to EU customers I believe have to

hmm. the first proxy i tried seemed to filter that out

2:43 AM
@nhinkle lol how funny

1 hour later…
4:11 AM
@KronoS you still need a webpage?

@Sathya no I got what I wanted ^^

okay

@Sathya I'm having probs with this now:
in Stack Exchange Community Blogs, 53 mins ago, by KronoS
I can't seem to upload images to blog.SU

ah
put them on i.stack.imgur and publish for now

well I don't need to publish right away. I'll wait for a little while and see if I get any response... if not I'll do that

Curiosity just landed on Mars!!!!

6:12 AM
@KronoS so I hear

@Sathya I watched it live. It was quite amazing and fun

@KronoS I couldn't catch it live :(

on another note, mind looking at the QOTW post and proofing it? @Sathya

@Sathya sad day? why not?

6:14 AM
@KronoS was Am at work

oh got it

@KronoS ->

@nhinkle :)

they don't use cookies for the latter, it's via HTML5 localstorage. Auth also uses the same, I believe.
cookies store the auth key after login

@Sathya oh really?
@Sathya right so you don't have to log back in again and again

Engineers, man.

6:49 AM
@KronoS mix of both for auth:

Q: How does SO's new auto-login feature work?

MarkSO and SU just told me I've been logged in. I'm guessing because I'm already logged into my Google account... but how does SO know that?

@nhinkle hey you're trying to be one of those as well
@Sathya oh! nice find. I'll reference that and edit the blog as such... anything else?

@KronoS I did some minor edits

@Sathya are you done with those?
if not that's fine, just can't be editing at the same time :P

@KronoS yes

@Sathya thanks man.
@nhinkle feel free to look it over as well.

6:56 AM
@KronoS anytime.

what's going on?
I just got home from a mars party

7:08 AM
@nhinkle I was watching JPL live, fully expected tears. Was absolutely elated when they pulled it off :)

@Paul I was in an auditorium with about 1000 people. Wild applause. Happiest bunch of nerds I've seen in some time.

@nhinkle Yeah, I got quite emotional myself, watching it on my phone at the office. Most people I know aren't aware or interested sadly.

@Paul you need more nerdy folks to hang around with :P

@nhinkle I am here aren't I? My pixel friends :)

Fair enough :)

7:17 AM
any place where I can catch it again?

7:33 AM
@Sathya nothing official i can think of off the top of my head
try youtube? youtube.com/…

7:59 AM
@nhinkle thanks. YouTube is blocked at work, will check later

@Sathya if you do end up finding a good one, let me know :)

@nhinkle will do!

A lot of people have heard about Internet “cookies” and often they have a bad connotation  to them, but to web developers they are very useful.  So what exactly are they?  The official Wikipedia definition states:

This basically means that websites will save small pieces of data on your machine in plain text.  These have a wide range of uses, but here are some common examples that I can think of:

Netflix: Isn’t is awesome how it remember where you last left off?  This is done through cookies

Amazon (and other shopping sites): They remember what was in your basket last time you visited. …

this was driving me nuts

@Sathya Congrats on solving it :D

@OliverSalzburg thank you!

That was quick and easy. Talked to some guy on Lenovo chat, and he confirmed that I can buy an mSATA drive after market and install it fine.

Bob
10:54 AM
@nhinkle Now save the log in case you actually can't :P

@Bob the manual seems to vaguely back that up, it just wasn't quite clear

Q: Windows beeps when I type the n in account or mount

RobinThis is a weird issue, I've got a Lenovo laptop running Windows 7 Enterprise. Whenever I type the word mount or account as I hit the n it beeps. I've tried other similar words, sprout, tout etc but they don't trigger the beep. When I was running Linux on the machine I noticed that occasionally ...

I'm tempted to ask if they've tried other words with n in them, or just n itself... :\

I'm sort of torn. Thinkpad x230 or Thinkpad T430?

Q: Disable/remove MacDrive from within MacOS X

emaster70I've just tried upgrading Windows 7 to Windows 8 CP on my macbook air and after it restarted, I've repaired my MacDrive installation which claimed that it had problems. A: Why isn't my graphics card good enough when it should be?

Sathya what are the things that "matter" in a graphics card There are a whole bunch of factors that determine how good a GPU is. Let's take a look at some of them: GPU Bus Width: The width of the memory bus interface from the the GPU's memory to the it's processing units. Low end GPUs have low wi...

any ideas how I can do gawker.com/5878638/… ?

@soandos seems like a good question for Web Applications

Good point

@soandos What is your question again?

If you google soandos, you will get ~30,000 hits
I want that as my name on all gmail accounts that I have

12:00 PM
ah

I don't bing nearly as well though
webapps.stackexchange.com/q/29730/11098 if anyone wants to follow it (I gather lots of people want psydonyms)

woah, jokerdino gets 30k hits as well o.O

@Sathya Wow great post, feeling quite ashamed with mine mine and should probably remove it :(

not bad :)
I just went to random pages in the results, and they seem to all be me
(vast majority on SU, some on pysicsforums, and some other places)

@HaydnWVN aw, thanks! You should consider keeping it, people like small answers :P

Bob
12:06 PM
@jokerdino ...trying "bob" isn't going to mean much, is it?

@Bob I doubt it is fairly unique, is it?

I use 'Roady' for everything, own www.roady.co.uk and used to own www.roady.com yet i wasn't allowed it on g+
i'm only HaydnWVN on here as its kinda work related :P

@HaydnWVN how did you ask for it?

registered under my real name then applied for it from a link in the account management
this was about 3 or 4 months ago, i've not been back on g+ for prob 2-3 weeks
its a waste with being active on facebook, hardly anyone i know on g+ isn't on facebook anyway

@HaydnWVN not seeing the link

12:23 PM
@HaydnWVN interesting.

1:09 PM
Can someone portscan my server ??

@soandos It's all different from what i remember, i signed up very early

@HaydnWVN, got it

1:31 PM

@OliverSalzburg OMG what happened to your mouse?!

@OliverSalzburg How do I configure routes in OpenVPN, I dial my connection (PPoE) ?
OpenVPN does not like that
ROUTE: route addition failed using CreateIpForwardEntry: One or more arguments
Route addition via IPAPI failed [adaptive]
nvm, i will post a question

2:28 PM
Awesome :D

> "Cloud668: Wikipedia is currently down due to networking issues (read: fiber being accidentally cut) in the Tampa Datacenter. no ETA"

@OliverSalzburg Too much whitespace! :P

@OliverSalzburg Hmm , do you have your photo as your gravatar or that pattern ?

@slhck Yeah, I'll have to majorly fix my wallpaper now :\ I only designed that for 1920x1200x2 :(
@HackToHell It's supposed to be my photo. I don't know what is causing that issue.

What's up with @OliverSalzburg's gravatar? I'm not seeing anything wrong with it

2:31 PM
@slhck It seems like at least one size of the gravatar is incorrectly cached.
But only for some people

@HackToHell That looks fine for me

That is the pattern and this is his face gravatar.com/avatar/…

@HackToHell Face as well, for me

2:33 PM
Did you change your email or something? o.O

only 32 is bad ;p

the hashes are the same, yet images are different

Even a big image shows up correctly

I assumed it has to do with the Cache-Control header gravatar sends
But it looks fine

2:35 PM
@OliverSalzburg Set your picture as yourself again from gravatar, fixed some problems for me

The image is only supposed to be cached for 5 minutes
@HackToHell I did that, multiple times

Strange

Man, portrait mode is so awesome
Especially for SU! :D

2:52 PM
Now my ineternet connection does not get routed through the VPN. sigh I am dumb
@OliverSalzburg How do I route my entire connection through the VPN ?

@HackToHell No idea

:'(

The Microsoft Mouse and Keyboard Center got a new Metro Windows 8 UI interface. Neat!

3:32 PM
Seemingly I have to add redirect-gateway def1 to my client config

@OliverSalzburg Evening here
@HackToHell Yo!

@Boris_yo Hello !

@HackToHell Hotmail.com vs. Outlook.com?
@HackToHell Outlook.com is in early stages? Beta? What happens of I login with my Hotmail.com credentials?

imo, both are same, outlook.com just has a metro Win 8 ish UI

@HackToHell You mean GMAIL'ish?

3:37 PM
Yes and I kinda like it

@HackToHell I know why you like it. Because I like it as well.
@HackToHell We like it because they follow the following concept:

"Keep it simple!"
@HackToHell Did I mention that Outlook.com is more dynamic and loads faster? I even assume that advertisements that make me angry because of their slow loading on Hotmail.com will run smoother here if there will be ads at all.

Simple and effective
@Boris_yo It's still not finished, there will be ads ;p
Hi @WarriorBob

Hey there @HackToHell, how goes?

@HackToHell Maybe they will be based on HTML5 and not Flash?
OS keeps rebooting when lots of apps are moved to SDcard! HUGE BUG IN ANDROID OS 2.3.5 (and higher)!

@WarriorBob Everything sways well
@Boris_yo maybe

3:52 PM
@HackToHell I cannot go back to previous UI! I think it is permanent.

lol

@HackToHell You didn't say it will be like that.

I had no idea !!

@HackToHell Sir, I want my refund!

4:08 PM
@Sathya Wikipedia down? When? I've been on it most of the afternoon lol

@HaydnWVN was down for a good 30 mins about hour and half ago

I must've been on quite an interesting page and never clicked anything then lol

4:38 PM
@HaydnWVN LOL

@KronoS Congrats :)

@slhck thank you... it's been sitting at 98, 99 for the past few weeks.

So, @DanielBeck, it's easiest if you just create a new empty folder somewhere, named like the project, then run git init
Do you have a GitHub account already?

@slhck That's boring. How about I re[something] my local Xcode git instead?

@DanielBeck Hm, okay.
I don't know what Xcode offers but you can go there from a terminal and show me git status :P

5:32 PM
Have an account btw, a repo, and set up global git user name and email on my Mac.

Neat, then all you have to do from the local repository is

# On branch master
# Changes to be committed:
# (use "git reset HEAD <file>..." to unstage)
#
# new file: CocoaActivityCounter/CocoaActivityCounter.entitlements
# renamed: CocoaActivityCounter/BWAppDelegate.h -> CocoaActivityCounter/DBAppDelegate.h
# renamed: CocoaActivityCounter/BWAppDelegate.m -> CocoaActivityCounter/DBAppDelegate.m
# new file: editclear.png
# new file: player_pause.png
# new file: player_play.png
#
# Changes not staged for commit:
# (use "git add/rm <file>..." to update what will be committed)

@slhck Hah. That'd be nice. I was two days late though, so I only got the hyphen.

@KronoS Nice :D

5:34 PM
@DanielBeck There's another Daniel Beck out there? :P
Anyway, once you did that, you need to commit your changes to your local repository first, so basically
git commit -a

@slhck Football player, Schlager music singer, and a few others...

And when you've committed everything, it should show nothing to commit (working directory clean)
Now all you have to do is push your local repository to the remote called origin
git push origin master
This will push the master branch to origin (i.e. GitHub)
And you're done

@slhck Riiight.

@DanielBeck Didn't work?

Well, figured it out. Had to git pull first.
Now, looking online what kind of git I am in checking in tons of crap...

5:42 PM
Yeah, you only need that if you have remote changes.. Didn't think you had any, weird.

I initialized the repo with an empty readme file or something like that.

Oh, alright

Almost looks good so far...
thanks for the help @slhck

Sure thing!
If you make any local changes, easiest is to git add -u (this will stage all changed and deleted files for the next commit), then git commit -a and git push
Best to check with git status after git add though
And if you don't use ZSH and oh my zsh yet, they have a nice Git plugin github.com/robbyrussell/oh-my-zsh/blob/master/plugins/git/…

I don't. I just see hordes of clueless people using it and asking very basic questions on the site, so I think I'll pass for now.

5:49 PM

Completed \o/

@DanielBeck It's actually quite nice, love the completion, but you can survive on bash as well, of course.

@slhck I tried fish a while back and loved its autocompletion. The segfaults, not so much.

@DanielBeck :D
I really think Pro Webmasters should adjust their gradient in the header...
Ain't that better? :D

6:24 PM
@slhck Do you have a minute?

@DanielBeck Shoot

Is there a way to access my local git repo like it was a server? It should be like one, right? file:// URLs or something like that?
I want to address my local copy from a Jenkins CI server so it can build unpushed changes directly locally.

@DanielBeck Good question. No idea other than suggesting gitorious.org
I'm by all means not a Git expert

That way I don't need to set up a VM with X11 and Eclipse etc., but can just edit in vim and have Jenkins build from that
@slhck Hm. Maybe it works directly, let's try that...
@slhck Did you upgrade to ML?

@DanielBeck No, fresh install

6:31 PM
Yeah, but ML?
Did double-click selection/unselection behavior change for you too?
It's really difficult to deselect/unselect text by clicking it again...

@DanielBeck Yeah, they changed that.
But I have to say, I like the way it is now

Wait
It was just my mouse doubleclicking speed. Increased it, and it's fixed!
@OliverSalzburg On the wall, upper right letter. Is that a PIN letter from your bank?

@DanielBeck Do you know how I can get ML to suggest me US English instead of UK English?
The language prefs only show "English".

@slhck So everything's localised?
Which language prefs?
Language & Text » Language has U.S. English as separate entry.

@DanielBeck Well, yeah.. Spelling and Grammar through right click always picks BrE first
@DanielBeck Ah, that could be it.
Why would they put that under "U".....

6:39 PM
Second tab also has separate speling settings
Try to select U.S. English speling there.

Automatic seemed to fall back to BrE

Not for me...
Seriously? RAID status changes on a VM? What is wrong with these people?

Hm, let's see.. might need a restart

@slhck If I want exactly this locally, is git reset a43ceed22bfb698ed348847a8b100e5027a8227a correct?
It did... something... no idea what though.

@DanielBeck No, reset only stashes any changes to your local repo

6:53 PM
crap.

Q: how to clone an old git-commit (and some more questions about git)

BerschiI have a git-repository of my project with about 20 commits. I know how to clone the actual commit with git clone, but how can I "clone" an old commit? is there a really good git-GUI (imho qgit is not a good GUI)? what exactly are "branches"? when I want to release 0.1, 0.2 and so on, wha...

$ git status
# On branch master
# Your branch and 'origin/master' have diverged,
# and have 218 and 437 different commits each, respectively.
:<

Haha
So what do you want to keep?
git log HEAD..origin/master should show you the diff

empty

hm

6:55 PM
$ git checkout a43ceed22bfb698ed348847a8b100e5027a8227a
Previous HEAD position was ce35c26... fixed compilation error.
HEAD is now at a43ceed... [maven-release-plugin] prepare release jenkins-1.466.1

looks good

@DanielBeck No, it's the PIN letter of my ID (neuer, elektronischer Personalausweis)
The PIN is still hidden, zoom all you want ;D

@DanielBeck My plan B in case I screw up with Git is always to just rm -rf the whole thing and make a new clone
And you will screw up, all the time.

@slhck Just like SVN. Throw away the metadata, do a clean checkout, replace the data files

@DanielBeck Yeah, although with SVN it's much easier to f up the server

# Not currently on any branch.?!

7:00 PM
I guess that's normal if you check out a certain commit

7:25 PM
How many of you Android owners move apps to SD card? I suppose enough that have this problem:

http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1446961

3 hours later…
10:41 PM
Do we have any thinkpad owners here? I need some advice.
@JourneymanGeek I think you have one, right?

10:58 PM
@nhinkle so does @SimonSheehan
Though it may be a different brand of Thinkpad, like an ideasomethingorwhatever

oh. the ideapads are... inferior

@nhinkle I'm seriously considering the X220 tablet, after Win8 comes out

@studiohack idk, i'd just as soon go for a surface. they're a bit cheaper, and more portable
the x220 is damn nice, but i'm not sure if windows 8 is really its thing

Surface? what the thing is a surface? Last I heard it was a big touchy coffee table?
@nhinkle it is. meaning what? That it might not be suitable for Win8?
The reason I want to wait is so that they might release a better, version of the x220 for the Win8

oh i'm sure it'll run windows 8 beautifully, but i'm saying the form factor wasn't designed for carrying in your arm and using as a slate-type tablet

11:01 PM
@nhinkle The reason I want it is because I love my physical keyboards and I want it to convert
so the idea of being able to switch I love the idea of

@studiohack I swear you saw the surface... didn't you? The new slate thing from Microsoft? With the keyboard cover thingy?

what?
isn't that @KronoS?
This is surface?

i distinctly remember you talking about it. and being like "wow, all the mods should get one!"

yes, that's it

11:03 PM
@nhinkle oh, I thought this was a Win8 RT tablet

There's two versions - the Surface RT and the Surface Pro

wow, okay
@nhinkle lol, I still think this. haha.
@nhinkle wow. this is some device!
@OliverSalzburg oh wow. congrats man! beautiful setup!

@studiohack I... wow. Huh. I definitely thought you saw this when it came out. You must've been trekking around in a forest or something :P
Yep, it's a physical keyboard, and it's also a cover. And it's removable. There's also a touch version.

@nhinkle sorry, was lazy when I asked about the keyboard, just read up on it. I'd kill for one of these

:D

11:07 PM
@nhinkle yeah, I guess I was. haven't been up to speed on Tech in general the last 3-4 months

If it weren't for the fact that I need a laptop now, I'd wait and buy one. Oh well.

@nhinkle why not use your desktop? (you have one, with like 25GB of RAM and Intel i7?!)
@nhinkle wow. just wow. Now I'm gonna have to figure out between the x220 and the Surface RT

Because I have classes. And can't just bring it with me.

how expensive, any idea?
@nhinkle sorry, dumb question then. I have yet to use a laptop in class, like, really need one or something

it'll be "comparable to ultrabook prices" says microsoft

11:12 PM
so does this mean that cheaper Win8 RT devices will be available?

the RT version will be around "comparable to other tablet prices".
we're guessing $500 and $1000 approx. for the RT and Pro respectively

I see. now stuff makes so much more sense! lol thanks @nhinkle haha

:D

fun fact: I have never, ever, bought any electronics (assembled computer or mp3 player) brand new.
refurb, yes. used, yes.
so I'll probably wait a year and get Win8 Surface on ebay. oh well.

that works too

11:30 PM
@studiohack @nhinkle I didn't do anything with the surface

@KronoS i know, i think he meant it was you i talked to about it perhaps

@KronoS yeah, we figured it out. I was very mixed up :)

lol ok

@nhinkle I thought you meant it was him who experienced it at MS or something (cc @KronoS)

Oh. Nope.
