hey folks. Running into a weird issue here, I'm not sure where or how to debug. In the recent past I have noticed that majority of times (like 9/10 times), when I switch on the computer, the lights etc turn on, the fan rotates but it doesn't go beyond POST.

Once a blue moon when it does go beyond POST, everything works just fine. I'm not sure what's the problem. I've disconnected and reconnected all the wires, components etc, no dice. I've removed the GPU, swapped RAMs, disconnected my SSD/HDD and turned them on, nothing.

I dragged the problem with this system till last week (in between put a UPS so that the system never shuts down)

till it finally gave up and couldn't start or would run into bootloops

I wouldn't call it godlike, but it's definitely more than 99% of PC users at least would bother with in the US, because replacing the mobo is cheaper than the labor of someone spending their time figuring it out.

funny, that -- cheap products prevent us from being able to repair them because it's economically unviable

expensive products cause a thriving services industry

shop in Bangalore has probably seen so many of that DMA controller failing that it was easy to diagnose

but diagnosing it the first time probably took an hour plus

btw, if you, per chance, are using GitLab, then it has built in CI ... you just need to set it up

we are using bitbucket but we only get 50mins build time for free

the build takes ~30 seconds, copying the files to the server takes 10 minutes

Flash memory, especially well-worn NAND, can leak their stored charge over time. You can reasonably expect an SSD to keep its data for at least one to two years (at 30 °C and 25 °C, respectively) as long as you haven't exceeded its endurance rating.

MLC is better than TLC or QLC as well. The need to differentiate among more different charge levels makes data retention more problematic as they're more sensitive to changes in the stored charge over time.

@bertieb The white Eneloop batteries are great general-purpose batteries. They can last up to a decade if you take good care of them. The black Eneloop Pro batteries don't have as good cycle or shelf life and are more expensive, but have higher capacity and can deliver more peak power, and are best for applications where maximum performance matters more than long-term service life.

The Panasonic flashgun I have for my FZ1000 is very sensitive to battery performance, unlike the (larger, ironically) Metz mecablitz 58 AF-2 for my Pentax DSLRs.

The DMW-FL360L has ~69% of the peak power of the larger unit, but takes only a third of the time to cycle on a fresh set of batteries (1.5 seconds vs 4.5 seconds). The Metz's cycle times are therefore more consistent as the batteries are discharged because the maximum current draw from the batteries is limited.

The Panasonic flashgun will charge noticeably slower on even slightly discharged cells, and it also seems to be pickier with old cells that have higher internal resistance. The cells get pushed harder in the smaller flashgun, funnily enough.

Then again, I think I need to replace or repair loads of my camera kit soon...

Yes, people have had flashtubes just blow after several years of intensive use. The predecessor model, the 58 AF-1, has had a handful of reports of the flashtube exploding.

Not broken, but between this, a flashtube that appears quite badly cracked from close examination, and a broken battery door that needs to be held shut with gaffer tape, I might need to replace it soon.

As for chargers, I just use the stock Panasonic BQ-CC17 charger. It's slow, but very reliable and charges each cell individually (four cells in four channels).
