@MichaelFrank and generating heat....

Not that much heat actually.

6:47 AM
Doing stuff feels amazing

7:27 AM

7:46 AM
morning

2 hours later…
9:38 AM
Love that video game logic... Opening a chest in an abandoned sewer...
> You obtained a loaf of freshly baked bread!

9:54 AM
:D
Hurrar, first problem of the day fixed, onto the next!

10:06 AM
@MichaelFrank The big question is...
who is baking that bread
Kinda reminds me of that video asking...
who lights the torches in dungeons?

Sigh
can't cancel cinema tickets which were booked online

@djsmiley2k Can you sell 'em?
Also, can one still purchase Lightroom separate from Adobe CC ?
Or have they removed that option?

10:25 AM
@bertieb who wants to see Avengers at 11:30am on Thursday tho?

Why is Starbucks so expensive?

@rahuldottech cause branding and environment I suppose

@rahuldottech lord knows.
because people pay it

@djsmiley2k People on annual leave? :D

@bertieb :D

10:25 AM
One croissant is 250 bucks?
Wtf

rupees though
that's funny money

> As of February 2019, Adobe stopped offering the standalone Lightroom 6.

@JourneymanGeek still tho. I'd never pay more than half that for one.

ಠ_ಠ
You... mattress fudgers
Guess I'm sticking to Darktable!

10:29 AM
@JourneymanGeek Is it still fiaggable if it's totally obvious what's been Bowlderised? :D

@rahuldottech I don't understand why you're so amazed at this...

@bertieb Probably, but it'll be about twice the price of the Photoshop/Lightroom bundle.
They try very hard to push their subscription model as well.

@MichaelFrank They're pushing it so hard that it's the only option! (well, other than not using it at all)

@bertieb Yea lol
I have the photography bundle.

@bertieb fiags!

10:37 AM
We should have a !!fiagged command

@djsmiley2k I'm not?
I'm just complaining
And the only other cafe in this place
Doesn't have power outlets
Stuuuupid

11:00 AM
Soooooooooo starbucks is more expensive because they offer power, wifi and don't glare at you for sitting there all day working?

11:10 AM
They don't offer WiFi
And the other place doesn't glare at you either if you sit there all day

/me guesses he gives up on being supprised
takes too much energy :D
and complaining, agian, too much like hard work ;D

Ave
11:43 AM

@Ave Now you can take calls from Microsoft Software Technical Support and just let them in!

12:02 PM
@bwDraco what batteries do you use in your flash, out of interest?
Have seen places recommend NiMh cells

12:19 PM
Some Duracell 2500s and the Pro Panasonic Eneloops seem to be positively regarded
There are a million and one chargers
Oh well

1 hour later…
1:46 PM
btw @JourneymanGeek

hey folks. Running into a weird issue here, I'm not sure where or how to debug. In the recent past I have noticed that majority of times (like 9/10 times), when I switch on the computer, the lights etc turn on, the fan rotates but it doesn't go beyond POST.

Once a blue moon when it does go beyond POST, everything works just fine. I'm not sure what's the problem. I've disconnected and reconnected all the wires, components etc, no dice. I've removed the GPU, swapped RAMs, disconnected my SSD/HDD and turned them on, nothing.

still having that issue? :P

I dragged the problem with this system till last week (in between put a UPS so that the system never shuts down)
till it finally gave up and couldn't start or would run into bootloops

BIOS battery?

took it to SP Road (the mecca of all things computers in Bangalore)

1:48 PM
Still learning towards bad psu ;p

they diagnosed it to bad DMA controller and replaced it

(I did change the PSU btw - no effect)

How do you even do that o0

> DMA controller

1:49 PM
magic

so they did board level repair on the mobo?

yeah
post that I havent had any problems
guess the cost of the repairs

Sweeeeet

$100?

1:50 PM
@Burgi Rs 2,100 or ~ $30

@allquixotic the diagnosis
Oo

wow

saved me atleast $1000 in a new Ryzen XD

@allquixotic thanks for that vid!

1:51 PM
that is still godlike levels of diagnostics

Nice

I wouldn't call it godlike, but it's definitely more than 99% of PC users at least would bother with in the US, because replacing the mobo is cheaper than the labor of someone spending their time figuring it out.

they took all of 3 minutes to diagnose it...

except when Apple products are so expensive that American labor to repair them is worth the time of said labor
funny, that -- cheap products prevent us from being able to repair them because it's economically unviable
expensive products cause a thriving services industry
shop in Bangalore has probably seen so many of that DMA controller failing that it was easy to diagnose
but diagnosing it the first time probably took an hour plus

yeah undoubtedly
still was blown away hehe

2:03 PM
On another note, the Beeb has an article on the Ethiopian Airlines Flight 302 / Boeing dealie

@allquixotic also folks in richer countries are far less likely to bother

2:31 PM
shit, I've experienced all of these: reddit.com/r/AskReddit/comments/c1lphv/…
Except sunset on a beach. I've seen sunsets in lots of other places tho
Also haven't jumped off a cliff into water

I haven't experienced a multitude of them

ROFL

@allquixotic which ones?

In much the same league as the "biggest sandcastle" TV debate
Holy image strip, Batman!
I meant to post the bottom one

i need some linux/YML help
```
On the internet, nobody knows you're a dog criminal mastermind
deployment:
  tasks:
    - export DEPLOYPATH=/home/username/public_html/
    - /bin/cp -R /home/username/repositories/website/ $DEPLOYPATH
    - /bin/cd $DEPLOYPATH
    - /opt/cpanel/ea-nodejs10/bin/npm install
    - gulp build
my issue is that the site gets copied to /home/username/public_html/website rather than to /home/username/public_html/. can anyone see why?
Bob
hey @SathyajithBhat is back! :D
woohoo \m/
3:05 PM
anyone?
@Burgi does -T, --no-target-directory treat DEST as a normal file work
i think i was just missing a wildcard
/bin/cp -R /home/username/repositories/website/* $DEPLOYPATH appears to be working
now i just need gulp to run correctly
3:27 PM
@Burgi ok, I got to ask, why are you using "export" and "gulp" as if the PATH is set, while writing fullpath for "cp", "cd" and "npm"?
are those artifacts from old copy-paste or is there an actually reason?
export seems to work out of the box
cp should too :D
it's also in /bin/
i'll try it
i was referring to a tutorial and it said to use the absolute path
ah, wait, "export" wasn't an executable
@Burgi sure, but wouldn't you use the absolute path for gulp too?
@tereško that might be why it isn't working
3:32 PM
there is that too
i'm still new to the CI world
trust me, it doesn't get all that easier with additional exposure
which gulp will tell you what's running
whereis gulp will tell you everywhere it exists
you just get desensitized
i'm following this absymal tutorial: documentation.cpanel.net/display/CKB/…
3:35 PM
never understood why people keep using cpanel
i have people in my team with zero server skills
btw, if you, per chance, are using GitLab, then it has built in CI ... you just need to set it up
it is a million times easier to show them buttons than it is a list of linux commands
we are using bitbucket but we only get 50mins build time for free
the build takes ~30 seconds, copying the files to the server takes 10 minutes
you can self-host GitLab for free
no, i don't have the time to selfhost anything as important as our own code repo
3:40 PM
hmmm .... it might be a good idea to start looking for a different workplace
sounds like you are stuck tard-handling with no budget or competent help
probably true
@tereško My script works!
Jun 12 at 22:38, by bertieb
That posts "Update your CV and start looking for new jobs" to random Workplace questions
:D
@tereško we've been over this.
I've given up on telling him, the same way he's given up on @bwDraco :d
At least the guy who i t old to stop removing hdd's from their raid array 'to take a image of them for backup' listened to me
@djsmiley2k something something shy something imposter syndrome something
I know dude but your workplace is litterally, killing you maybe?
And I actually like you, so that must mean something. xD
Most people in crappy workplaces, I just laugh at.
3:52 PM
PII ->>
4:20 PM
lol
1 hour later…
TV, which program is that?
It's like Netflix, but shows run at certain times instead of on demand
Ah, that thing which was once a Tube connected to 2 VCRs. One te record shows, on the play them back tith add skipping option
I never had a TV since that era
I am not sure why they did their uttermost to drive people away though, but that many adds drives me mad
roar
@bertieb Panasonic Eneloop. Can be either the regular (white) cells, or the Pro (black, formerly XX) cells.
@bwDraco Thanks for letting me know :)
5:36 PM
So I switched away from DuckDuckGo to Startpage.com
Let's see how this goes
I went with 4 Eneloops and 4 Duracell 2500s
and <some charger>
@bwDraco Quick question: for long term storage, HDD or SSD?
@rahuldottech Neither. Use archival optical discs instead.
@bwDraco between the two, I meant
My graduation is Wednesday, but paying for photos feels like throwing money away :P
5:37 PM
(though hard drives are probably better than SSDs in this regard)
@bwDraco Okay that's what I needed to know, thanks!
Welp I'm gonna have some cornflakes and get back o dinner. See ya'll
Flash memory, especially well-worn NAND, can leak their stored charge over time. You can reasonably expect an SSD to keep its data for at least one to two years (at 30 °C and 25 °C, respectively) as long as you haven't exceeded its endurance rating.
Multiple HDDs are what I use
@bwDraco Ah okay. My use case is ~4 years
Backup on 1TB disk, 3 years later got just as cheap 2TB disks and alternated between them
'then a signerl larger disc... you get the picture
5:40 PM
So I'm thinking two HDDs in RAID 1
But if possible do not store the alt backup in the same place
I tried to buy an LTO-7 drive, but it went for more than my max bid :(
No. If you want a backup go for easy to use.
Raid complicated matters (from a person who likes raid)
@bertieb Consider LTO-5 or LTO-6 instead.
For backup go for most reliable and easiest method
5:41 PM
MLC is better than TLC or QLC as well. The need to differentiate among more different charge levels makes data retention more problematic as they're more sensitive to changes in the stored charge over time.
LTO is lovely, but <Strike> those woods a re lovely, dark and deep</strike> expensive
@bwDraco Aye, I think those are just about more cost effective for my data
Again, I'd just use archival optical discs. M-DISC drives and writers are not too expensive these days...
But I already have the hard drives
sunk cost etc
Even if it doesn't live up to the longevity claims, I have no reason to believe that the discs won't last at least a decade untouched.
5:42 PM
This LTO drive was listed super cheap and I was hoping I could snipe it :D
By like, a grand
But, well, no
LTO is lovely. Buy 2 so you have a backup.
oh wait
@bertieb The white Eneloop batteries are great general-purpose batteries. They can last up to a decade if you take good care of them. The black Eneloop Pro batteries don't have as good cycle or shelf life and are more expensive, but have higher capacity and can deliver more peak power, and are best for applications where maximum performance matters more than long-term service life.
@Hennes Aye, if the drive died that would be... problematic :P
Seriously though. If you find an online place for cheap bac kups (encrypted) then I would love to have access to an off-house backup
tend to be expensive
@bwDraco Using them occasionally in Yongugougougo speedlite, so peak perf being good is good
5:43 PM
lol
So I just go for the 'new drive every 4 years' and store the old ones at my parants place
(I suppose you meant Yongnuo)
@bwDraco Ah, that's how it's spelt :P
What's the old joke? "I can start spelling banana, I just don't know when to stop..."
How often do you use the flash? If you use it day in, day out, get the Eneloop Pro cells. If you only use it occasionally, get the regular white Eneloop cells.
Or Mississippi
@bwDraco This will be the second time this year, so... not often
I actually have an off-camera flash dealie but I could never get it to work reliably
A Yongnuo YN-622C pair
5:48 PM
The Panasonic flashgun I have for my FZ1000 is very sensitive to battery performance, unlike the (larger, ironically) Metz mecablitz 58 AF-2 for my Pentax DSLRs.
That cycle time can be frustrating
Someone else will be handling the camera so I wanted to get something that worked well with minimum fuss
Confusingly, the 'ready' light is red, and green when charging
Dunno why it was done that way
The DMW-FL360L has ~69% of the peak power of the larger unit, but takes only a third of the time to cycle on a fresh set of batteries (1.5 seconds vs 4.5 seconds). The Metz's cycle times are therefore more consistent as the batteries are discharged because the maximum current draw from the batteries is limited.
The Panasonic flashgun will charge noticeably slower on even slightly discharged cells, and it also seems to be pickier with old cells that have higher internal resistance. The cells get pushed harder in the smaller flashgun, funnily enough.
Then again, I think I need to replace or repair loads of my camera kit soon...
May 15 at 4:31, by bwDraco
user image
(that's the Metz 58; see context)
Yes, people have had flashtubes just blow after several years of intensive use. The predecessor model, the 58 AF-1, has had a handful of reports of the flashtube exploding.
> several years of intensive use
Well, there's your problem!
5:56 PM
The larger flashguns are more prone to this happening. It's ultimately just wear and tear.
May 15 at 4:34, by bwDraco
Not broken, but between this, a flashtube that appears quite badly cracked from close examination, and a broken battery door that needs to be held shut with gaffer tape, I might need to replace it soon.
Again, see context.
As for chargers, I just use the stock Panasonic BQ-CC17 charger. It's slow, but very reliable and charges each cell individually (four cells in four channels).
6:47 PM
/me ponders a new laptop (the current on is from Bef 2009)
Except for onky 1 year of support his seems nice:
