12:46 AM
@djsmiley2k pixie boots!
Thought in theory you just need it to load a better pxe loader thing

1:02 AM
???

@zixuan !!!

@JourneymanGeek Though you still need root access.

Nooooooot really

Why?

Because you run pxe before the os and it's a simple enough system not to need to be multiuser

1:07 AM
@JourneymanGeek I think "a little bit of pixie dust" is what I'm missing

@JourneymanGeek Well in ubuntu we have administrators and regular users. Only administrators can use sudo.

@bertieb hah

PXE seems to involve wrangling and coercion whenever I dip my toes

True.

@zixuan well not true

1:08 AM
And more cargo cult configuring than I'm willing to admit to :P

@bertieb boom. haha

Ubuntu sets 'admin' users to be able to use sudo for escalating their privileges

@JourneymanGeek Very true.

You can set specific users or groups to use sudo for certain commands
@bertieb which is funny cause pxe booting ought to be well understood

Well, it depends if you're a admin or not. You'll need sudo access to add someone to a sudo group.

1:11 AM
!!s/well understood/feared for the dark art that it is/

@bertieb @bertieb which is funny cause pxe booting ought to be feared for the dark art that it is (source)

What?

I think what confused me on my latest pixie hunt was EFI booting
Having not done a full EFI boot before

Operating systems get booted on computers not on chips.

So I've heard
But then chips are tasty

1:13 AM
haha
@bertieb Yeah.

@zixuan vaguely true
for now

ok

until the dystopian reality where the entire system is really on a chip
and you can buy a pc for a dollar out of a vending machine...
(which isn't actually dystopian come to think of it... until...)

Not true @JourneymanGeek

and you're stuck... with the default appstore

1:16 AM
That will be infinity years from now.

@zixuan what isn't true?
actually no

these sentences that you said are not true.

The computer is not a chip.

Not yet, no

1:18 AM
@JourneymanGeek grins in Eben Upton

@bertieb bingo!

@bertieb hahaha

But Eben Upton's dream isn't dystopian
the raspi is open software

What do you mean>

its a platform you can build anything on

1:19 AM
Uh, let me try.

but the cheapest I can get a raspi based usable system isn't for very much but...

Bu

35 dollars + 16 (for that case with a display people who have been raving about), and maybe 10-20 dollars for keyboard and mouse...

35+16=51; I'm good at math.

could swap it for a PI 0 or Pi 0 W but you'd need adaptors and such
19+10

1:20 AM
Yeah.
19+10=29;

How does swap it for a PI 0 or Pi0 W but you'd need adaptors and such make you feel?

Not a very good bot

How?

Please go on

1:22 AM
Where's @rahuldottech when we need him XD

That's OK. I can figure out everything by myself.

But can you?

Yes. Try 3*4 on your calculator and it will return 12. I did it without using a calculator.

Please go on

Right. Who are you, what do you want, and who is Root Access's cutest canine?

1:25 AM
@JourneymanGeek The cutest canine is you.
Hey, blue is a good color. It makes everything cooler and fresher :)

roar

Hmm, hmm?

I'm the resident dragon of this room :p

So, howabout that Gilette ad?

Get it away.

1:28 AM
Sure got the internet a-talkin'

Yep.
bark
App seems good.
Well, not really
No you have to try again on the test .

lol

bark
@zixuan Hahaha.
I was just doing it for a little bit of fun.

Alright then, thanks for clarifying. We're a bit concerned because we've had a series of trolling incidents in this room in the recent past...

Alright. Get back, we'll be fine.

1:36 AM
So... I'm not familiar with PXE. The only thing I know about it is that it's a means of booting from another computer on the network, possibly without a disk on the local machine.
PXE is something typically implemented in the system firmware (UEFI/BIOS/etc) or in the network adapter's own firmware, so it's independent of any OS installed on the system.

That's pretty much it
its "firmware" that sits on an NIC, and can load before the OS

PXE is like dual booting but from another computer.

and in theory you can replace or chainload a different implimentation

You're confusing dual-booting with network booting.

@bwDraco So PXE is network booting?

1:40 AM
Dual booting is when there's two operating systems on the machine's local disk(s).

so for example, you can....

and I'm confusing sleeping with staying up on RA! nn o/

@zixuan Yup. PXE is basically booting from another computer on the network. From what I know, the system basically communicates with and loads OS data from a server on the LAN.

@bwDraco my old workplace had a system where we'd load a bootloader with various installers, and use that to reinstall an OS

@JourneymanGeek Huh?

1:41 AM
or you could even use specific pxe implimentations to do "non standard" boot options

You can boot any OS this way. It's like booting from a USB flash drive or other external device, only that PXE is a mechanism for loading the OS from another computer.

Really? Any OS?

Yup.

this is an awesome example of all the naughty things you can do with pxe
though gpxe is 'dead' and you'd use ipxe

You'd need another computer or other networked device running PXE server software and the OS data for the client machine to load.

1:43 AM
@JourneymanGeek Who did all that writing on the blog?

@bwDraco actually not really
the "PXE" software is already there
you just need your DHCP server to tell it

Ok.

@zixuan whoever did that project. Not me

Ok, we don't know who built it.

@zixuan bob built it.

1:44 AM
lol

Who's bob?

bob is a builder.
bob is a fox
bob is bob
bob is not an american.
bob is not bob

@JourneymanGeek What do you mean?

bob is not bob ;p
but what is bob?

lol

1:47 AM

@bwDraco you have enough projects on your plate but something like my router build is a good starting point to playing with PXE on the server end

@bwDraco You mean bob is not that bob in the chat room?

Bob
I use PXE to deploy Windows

Why?

At scale, it avoids the need to manually intervene on every system. Centralized management means you can do it from one place, without having to go to each individual desktop.
What if you're managing systems in a company with offices around the world?
Or even in a few locations around town.

1:49 AM
Then I would build the computer uding PXE

Exactly.

Yep.

whoot
got my PI W 0 stuff
ironically I bought a full kit of accesserries for a USB OTG adaptor I am likely to use once.
Including a second Pi W 0

Bob
osay ywhay oday ouyay eednay ayay ipay ?

Stop Bob.

Bob
1:55 AM
@JourneymanGeek Ityay'say alwaysyay usefulyay otay avehay ayay arespay adapteryay... etterbay anthay otnay avinghay enoughyay!

ha ha ha.

@Bob true - but I have the normal sort of adaptor already
maybe 2-3

Yeah, me too.

@bwDraco doubleplus fun
you can set up some pxe implimentations to send a specific image based off hostname

I know tgat,

2:03 AM
@zixuan feel free to come back when you're going to make sense please.

Bob
hmmm

2 hours later…
4:22 AM

zixuan's chat profile
what if he really is

4:45 AM
@allquixotic, you haven't been on Matrix for a while. Has something happened?

Bob
5:08 AM
hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm
one of my servers seems to have died about 12 hours ago

6:05 AM
Y'all I just broke into the school WiFi. The first password I tried. This is amazing

6:21 AM
@bwDraco Something happened -- past tense. Actually, I'd rather discuss it with you on Matrix itself than here because it's semi-personal. It's not personally identifiable but I don't want to risk anything

6:37 AM
@bwDraco ^^ LOL

When did this happen?

IIRC, that was the Media Creation Tool with either the preview or the RTM of Win10.
only happened on some folks' systems. I upgraded from Windows 8.1 to Windows 10 RTM without a hitch, though I never touched pre-release builds of Win10 on my main desktop.

I know, but I'd be surprised if you got this message with the installer now...

no no, not now, but with RTM you would
I just posted that because my last comment included the words "Something happened" and it reminded me of that

Ah, I get it. :P

6:38 AM
that's a historical screenshot not something I'm seeing now

7:00 AM
heh
I have never had luck with the MCT ;)

Q: Potential Employer Cancels Return Flight

SnahA company I was interested in just flew me out for an interview. It was on the other side of the country so they paid for my flight and hotel. Unfortunately, the interview went disastrously. I blew every question and I could tell that they didn't like me personally. When I got to the airport ...

I.... what

10:58 AM
@djsmiley2k Could be a troll question ...

Bob
11:18 AM
@DavidPostill eh, all seems plausible

@DavidPostill yeah I'm wondering exactly that
Hmmm
Ivanti, why's your documentation so bad?
there's an image
then a list of ports, cept not all the ports are in the image. and the list doesn't tell you where connections originate.

3 hours later…
2:00 PM
@JourneymanGeek I WAS SUMMONED
Also, studying, apparently.

too late, alas

Welp. What did you want help with?

oh
we suspected someone of being a bot
we figured you could mess with it. FOR GOOD!

Oh lmao

Then I realised a few things and... er...
promptly did things

2:03 PM
Prompt action ftw!
Ok gtg class be back later

2:19 PM
Class, at this time of night?

the class war is never ending

I wish I could laugh at that. But it's painfully true :/

2:44 PM
Hahahaha YouGov
> If there were a general election held tomorrow, which party would you vote for?

"The raving loony party. ANything would be an improvement over the current mess"

3:31 PM
I prefer the No Candidate Deserves My Vote! party 😈
@JourneymanGeek You missed out "Official Monster" :)

because they've had so many issues with the unofficial monster raving loony party...

@Nick yep. Just got over

3:55 PM
@rahuldottech what did you study today?

4:16 PM
@Nick a few boring lessons.

4:51 PM
So... quick question. May I chat here as long as I don't rant or monologue? (Overall participation will be scaled back; see Matrix.)
(won't go into detail as to what happened)

@XKCD lol

dude as long as you stop ranting about your personal problems we are happy for you to talk about anything

Thanks guys.
And to be honest, the solution boils down to one word: courage.
With that out of the way, I'm thinking about the time management aspects of growing up.
How do you folks manage your time with a traditional 9-5 work schedule?
I tend to forget the fact that as close a bond as there I may have with this community, there's no obligation to participate, and no need to post just for the sake of posting.
I've been thinking about saving time by doing routine activities like checking email and catching up on news during the commute, but also on speeding up transitions like packinf up before leaving house and settling down after getting home.
Any hints on making better use of time?
I can't chat much longer because I have a driving lesson in twenty minutes, but feel free to share your tips.

5:08 PM
Use Task Scheduler. Set a time table for yourself. Reward yourself with imaginary points. LifeRPG app can help. Or even Habatica.

I've been using a small whiteboard to manage my agenda, and have been planning to install a larger board in the coming months.

@bwDraco its just something you learn

Oh, and whoever starred that courage message: thank you for the encouragement. I'll take all the help I can get.

Google Calender is also very helpful. Keep is good for notes. Trello is best.

Or paper notebooks.
Speaking of which, I should probably get some more little notebooks I can carry easily.
(because "my notebook is too big" shouldn't be an excuse)

5:17 PM
It's good but for me, those just cumulate with blank pages for years. I think maybe it's because I'm not fond of my own slanted lack of penmanship.

It's the same price? that's worrying.

I have these (purchased locally from a stationer) and they're a bit too large for my taste.
And these notebooks are not cheap.

lol, a5. A bit large for most people.

I also have several clothbound A4-sided notebooks.

5:25 PM
@bwDraco Do you know have many large pizza's I could buy with that money?

lol

yes, I could by lol large pizzas with extra toppings and a cheesy burst double crust,

Yeah, these are premium French-made notebooks. The paper quality is outstanding but they're also quite expensive. (Moleskine is even more expensive but their paper quality doesn't match up.)
welp. Ordering eight of the 3.5" x 5.5" (90mm x 140mm) notebooks.

You should step into a Crosswords store more often. It's impossible to walk out of there without getting attached to some expensive notebook or stationary.

See you folks later. Gotta get behind the wheel.

5:33 PM
Night, Dragon man.
Good luck with the steering and peddling.

5:57 PM
@bwDraco some people never do. some people do it amazingly
I find there's never enough time to do everything, so you prioritise what's important. Hence lists.

6:27 PM
Whoo. Fixed a navigation menu bug on my blog

7:01 PM
roar
Had a great lesson today. Still need to practice parking but maneuvering, observation, and judgment were markedly better today.

7:13 PM
But a number of bicyclists making deliveries blew past red lights.
I mean, is it really that urgent that you have to make the kinds of dangerous maneuvers? Bicyclists are subject to the same traffic rules as automobiles.

They're normally just called cyclists.
And courier bikes are basically bulletproof... or so they believe.
There's an OK movie about bike messengers though...

7:43 PM
federation: autonomies contributing to a few boring heterogeneities

2 hours later…
9:29 PM
...and I'm home.

10:18 PM
Well there does seem to be blogs online documenting how to retrieve truecrypt/veracrypt master encryption keys from running memory: volatility-labs.blogspot.com/2014/01/…
Now just need to figure out how to use/do/use them
