9:11 PM
@djsmiley2k TY. Google brought me to that easy account setting too, which worked as expected the first time I actually did it. Had I read your question 2 hours ago, I'd be in a much better mood right now :D

9:26 PM
How much is a quid?

£1

We're a US-minority room :P

@djsmiley2k thx

@Dog Ketamine?

Dog
@bertieb No

9:37 PM
I was hearing interesting things about it today in, of all places, Edin
Out of interest, what? (feel free not to answer if not comfortable saying in public forum)
There was also some discussion on perception of reality and what certain groups accept versus what other might
And how one normalisation might be (± unfairly) favoured over others
Wasn't quite the same thing as what you were describing above, but hit some similar notes, albeit from quite a different angle

Dog
@bertieb Interesting. Where were you? Lecture?

@Dog Ya it was a lecture which covered quite a wide range of bases
Kinda started in Plato's Cave and went to some Italian playwright whose name escapes me

Dog
@bertieb Link? Sounds like the thing I should've gone to

@Dog Not a public thing, more's the pity

Dog
@bertieb Oh

9:41 PM
And the guy didn't talk from slides either
Which helped actually
But it was really quite interesting
About what we take for granted
And what we accept as 'normal'
Oh hah, just got a bit further in scrollback
> WHY THE FUCK IS EVERYTHING IS?

ISIS?

Some of it could be summed up as that, albeit in different words :D

Dog
Richard Wiseman?

It was a Prof from Birmingham IIRC
Although I've read one of RW's books
The Luck Factor, IIRC

Dog
Ah. Wiseman used to do "secret"/closed society philosophical talks on that sorta area in Edinburgh

9:44 PM
Oh, cool, TIL

Dog
Tbf, even if it weren't open to the public, given my academic connections at the university (having been alumni and staff) I probably could have blagged my way in
Or have come and said hello

Hehe :D I reckon it might have floated your boat

Dog
@bertieb Something you've probably not heard of halfway between Ketamine and LSD

@Dog Interesting
I know there's more potent forms of ketamine (esketamine?) but I think it's chemically and psychoactively pretty similar

Dog
Edinburgh Skeptics society and Humanists society often arrange joint lectures on interesting topics here too. I used to be a formal member of both

9:48 PM
That sounds cool... I may have to pop through more often :P

Dog
Been a while though... given my recent ADHD awareness I've come to recognize why I'm pretty much incapable of paying attention to and through any form of lecture or talk that's not a stand-up comedy show

I had to xD

@Dog I take it you've tried stuff for ADHD?

Dog
And then there's the literature society with their slam poetry events.... Edinburgh has a lot of intellectual events throughout the year, one of the many reasons I like the place.
@bertieb cough sort of cough

/me facepalms

@Dog Say no more :P

Dog
Apparently trying to get legitimate treatment if you're not diagnosed as a kid on the NHS is pretty much futile
> Some adults wait more than seven years to be diagnosed with ADHD because of huge waiting lists, a charity has said.

Dr Louise Theodosiou, from the Royal College of Psychiatrists, said an adult with the condition was more likely to take drugs, commit crime or end up in prison.

"ADHD is connected with higher rates of suicide, depression and other mental health needs and untreated ADHD can also impact physical health," she said.

"People can be in a very serious condition while they wait for treatment."
Shock horror.

Aye
Not enough resources
It's... not a pretty picture

Dog
(If that gives any more context to some of my err behaviour in here)

Although there was more money announced recently, so that makes it all better or something

9:53 PM
it helps.

Dog
@bertieb Yeah, it's pot luck. Some people manage to get to see a specialist with less than 3 GP appointments, and as per above article, some people sit around for seven years or just give up

I'm a high functioning aspie, but I have no clue what adhd does in ones brain

@Dog Yeah, it's a lottery :-\
Hopefully with increasing awareness of late things will slowly start to improve
Doesn't help now, is the problem with that though
For people in ten years? Fan dabby dozy

Dog
@djsmiley2k Officially I have that diagnosis too, which in itself took over a decade, but given the overlap, I suspect ADHD may be a more accurate one. Yet given the stretched NHS mental health resources, I've kinda given up on any help until I'm rich enough to seek private treatment.

I have no diagnosis for that, but it's obvious. xD
however my depression is diagnosed and treated at least.
I just use mine as a tool.

Dog
9:58 PM
I was suspected of it since I was at nursery, but didn't get a psychiatrist to actually give a formal diagnosis until 22, after docs spent 4 years trying different antidepressants that didn't work and finally acknowledged there might be something else...
And thus here I am, basically self-medicating and whinging on an internet forum.

@Dog Any interest in transcutaneous or deep brain stimulation?
There are things that have cool magnets (how do they work?), even

ooooooo magnets
You know what I find really col
these metal cubes i have
if I push them hard enough together

Dog
@bertieb Yes, but again, never bothered seeking it given years it takes to even get a basic initial consult.

they stick
by MAGIC.

Dog
I have similarly considered, if I ever get rich enough, doing some of my own research in a fMRI machine with private money on the effects of some Ketamine-related dissociatives as a treatment for executive dysfunction.

10:00 PM
@Dog May be worth a shot, I understand things have changed in Scotland in the last wee while for those things in particular
Might necessitate travelling to Dundee (of all places) though...
Just something to keep on the radar if and when

Or... learn to control it, use it.
/me shrugs

Dog
Funny enough, I met a guy yesterday who'd done a computing science & medicine PhD mentioning the resources in Dundee
@djsmiley2k What, the magic cubes?

I'm having such weird de ja vue right now
@Dog the mental issues

@Dog I like the sound of that combination (computers are the future... soon there'll be one in every Fortune 500 company, I hear)

I still need medication

10:04 PM
@Dog There's research on using ketamine in major depressive episodes in the States (and the UK to a lesser extent)
Can find references if interested

If anyone ever figures out the link between GERD and Depression I'll be the first to say I told you so.

Some quite recent stuff

@bertieb I heard of using LSD.

@djsmiley2k Inflammation

@bertieb it would also explain my constant joint pain

Dog
10:05 PM
@djsmiley2k Already have, to some extent. It's what helped me get technical jobs requiring comp-sci degrees at the age of 18, and doctorates when I had a Biotech BSc

which Is hould really go to a doctor about, along with a few other things I'm trying to ignore :/

@djsmiley2k LSD has therapeutic purposes, sure

@djsmiley2k Worth doing, depression can come on before some inflammatory things
(IME, IANAL, YMMV, etc)

My depression's been around since I was.... young
like... 5-6
maybe even earlier

Dog
10:06 PM
@bertieb Yeah, I'm aware of that, but it's a) slow going, b) most likely to remain US-focused for the near future and c) Not all that relevant or effective for me personally, at least compared to related substances that were patented in the 50's but never made it to market

@Dog There's a clinic in Oxford that does it on an outpatient basis I think
NHS and private
But, uh, Oxford isn't terribly handy...

Dog
@bertieb Oxford... Hah.

However, if anyone can hook me up with a psychologist who'll look at maybe fixing my depression, i'm interested. ;D

Yea

Dog
Haven't you heard it's blasphemous for a kid brought up in Cambridge to set foot in Oxford

10:08 PM
@Dog Heh, well if Oxford has one, Cam probably does too :P

RTight
bed

Dog
Mentioned to a bunch of random strangers in Germany once I was from Cambridge, one of them literally offered me their drink to pour over the head of their mate from Oxford, on the assumption I'm supposed to prejudicially hate everything Oxford related.

night yall
be safe. be cool.

@Dog lol
Damn Scots Oxfordians, they ruuuuiiined Scotland Oxford
shakes fist

Dog
I mean I was aware of the stereotype/cliche, but didn't know it was taken that seriously

10:09 PM

Good old Scotland Oxford

Dog

:P
I hate to run off when the going is good, but bed is also calling because I was up at silly o'clock to get yon east coast-bound train

Dog
10:12 PM
Oh yeah, I didn't grow up here, but there's supposed to be a similar rivalry between Edinburgh and Glasgow.

Sounds plausible :D

Dog
Y'know, about a decade and a half ago the Scottish government were seriously considering a maglev project that would've linked Edinburgh and Glasgow with a sub-15-minute journey time
(12 minutes, to be precise, 15 including a stop at the airport)

Rings a bell... based on the Den-Swe border crossing dealie?
made those two cities, whatever they are, into an effective conurbation

Dog
Instead they ended up spending hundreds of millions upgrading the archaic railway to shave a measly 6 minutes off the journey time...
WE COULD HAVE BEEN WORLD LEADERS
(Said the Germans)

lol :P

Dog
10:15 PM
(Not a Nazi reference, it was German maglev tech they were considering)

@Dog if you wouldn't mind indulging me by dropping the name of the aforementioned pharmaceutical (Riot or here since it's all purely hypothetical) I'd be gratified to brush up my pharmacology (its been a while)

Dog
Riot, I still have that tab open but I don't think it's been functional for weeks

Plus I have a friend who is interested in such things (well, she likely knows about it as she far more informed in such matters than I)

WHY DO PEOPLE STILL HOST PROJECTS THERE?

Dog
Erf, forgot how to login

10:17 PM
No pressure tho, of course

Dog
Nvm

Bitcoin's about to make a price break, but I'm too fed up with myself after already losing $150 today due to drug-withdrawal-induced bad trading decisions. Ironically, I always make 100% profitable trades while on drugs, but really bad ones as they're wearing off.
Lol at Rahul invading the starwall

@Dog hah

Dog
Kid, you're half my age and already done twice as much in life. Ffs.

@Dog twice as much in what?

Dog
I'm suddenly tempted to jump on a first class flight to Dallas tomorrow, but have nobody to take with me to use my 2-for-1 flight voucher
But the fact that I can is somewhat mood lifting
Life's not so bad, even if I used to travel all the time, but now haven't set foot outside Scotland for almost 2 years
> Michelle Beckett, 45, from Harrogate, was diagnosed with adult ADHD in 2017, after being misdiagnosed in her early 20s. Since then she has required support from mental health services and set up ADHD Action following her diagnosis.

"ADHD nearly killed me," she said. "I was suicidal. How many people have lost their lives because they haven't been able to access the treatment, and understand the way their brain works?"
Why does this sound familiar

10:44 PM
@Dog do more.

10:55 PM

Q: Do I have the copyrights to post a picture I took of someone on instagram?

nealA girl messaged me on Instagram to take boudoir pictures of her at her house. I went to her house, took her pictures. I went home, edited, and sent them. She said she loved them, but she asked me not post the sexy ones because her boyfriend found out about the pictures and wasn't happy about it. ...

People are such idiots
I'm at a loss for words

11:06 PM
lol

11:30 PM
A new project thingy which I came up with in just five minutes! github.com/rahuldottech/ncRshell
