8:00 AM
@IvoFlipse, someday when it's not almost my bedtime, I'm asking you to tell this story :P

@nhinkle Actually he already answered it. @random and I have a reputation for being ruthless, and we don't care what users do about our actions. However, in a weird way we are fair. We will always back up our decisions with facts.

@Diago I have my days. haha After the SU revolution last year ... it was time to start Operation Cleanup.

Congrats @Satya on your new position and congrats to @studiohack @DMA57361 too

@Troggy What revolution? Did I miss something?

@Troggy we had a revolution?!

8:03 AM
@Diago it was after the team made decisions to clarify SU a bit better and not be so open. After all the new stack exchange sites came online, that helped tremendously.

I actually downloaded the election results to find out who won. Only 1 of the three mods I endorsed made it, so I don't think it was too bad. Hopefully next year the rest will make the cut.
@Troggy Oh yeah, I remember that. My famous what we should not ask addition to SU?

Yes, the endless questions on Meta.SO on what was kosher.
and all these nice sites to migrate questions to.

either you're expecting us to double in size in a year from now @Diago or some mods have to go ;P

@IvoFlipse At the growth rate 3 mods a year seems about right.

that battle is being fought every day on Stack exchange @Troggy
and it's nasty to be in the trenches

8:04 AM
@Diago, I appreciated your support (if i take your comments on the nominations to be the endorsements) :)
While it's of course too early to tell, there's a good chance I'll run again whenever the next election occurs, be that next year, later, or sooner

Q: Update the Super User FAQ

DiagoWith the changes made to the policies recently, and the amount of hits Super User is taking at the moment, I would like to suggest that the current FAQ is updated as follows: Super User is for computer enthusiasts and power users. If you have a question about ... computer hardware ...

I wrote that! It was my doing! And I am damn proud about it

@IvoFlipse, according to joel, we'll be overtaking facebook soon at our current rate of growth :P

it's off the charts on our mod page currently, but something tells me thats a rendering bug

@nhinkle You thought I made those comments for my health or because I was bored? You should know better. I actually emailed Robert before I made them.

we'd need more floppy questions in order to have 100% growth in traffic

8:06 AM
@Diago I just noticed I could upvote my own comment on that question due to the migration.

@Troggy Awesome. Comment badges anyone? :)

@Diago why'd you email robert?

Haha, the migrations I think introduced more bugs than any other feature on the site.

@Troggy @Jeff needs to look why the comments weren't allocated to the correct UserId's

we've grown nearly 20% since december
so I guess we're on track for 100% growth in a year

8:07 AM
@nhinkle To make sure that endorsing nominees are valid, since we know best who should make the cut.

ah. well, i genuinely appreciate your endorsement, and am quite happy to keep doing my best to help you all out :)

Well Super User has had he biggest mod turnover off all the sites.

also, @Diago regarding your comment on that old meta question you just posted, you'll be happy to know we've been working on upping that answer rate. we've been hunting down old, low quality, crappy answers. dunno if you've seen it, but:

 Witch Hunt

Room for discussion of finding old unanswered questions, promo...

And I have to admit, the nominations was very hard for me to choose. There were lot of good candidates.
@nhinkle Nice. Will have a look when I get home tonight.

@nhinkle Even the big man @Diago had to take a break for a while.

8:09 AM
I'm fairly happy with who we've got, we had to pick three anyway

I'm quite happy with who got elected. I voted for all three of them. I felt like it would be poor sportsmanship to vote for myself.

@Troggy More like admitted defeat. I gave up my position for quake and random to get theirs. I am 100% lucky that @Jeff has always forgiven me and let me come back. 3x already.

and I think @nhinkle will be useful as ever, especially now he has 3 more mods to command

@IvoFlipse I am also very happy, don't get me wrong. It was just hard who to choose.

@IvoFlipse :D

8:10 AM
I look at it pragmatically @nhinkle ;)

As I said earlier today... I'm starting to think you guys are our slaves, not vice-versa. @KronoS agrees with me :)

each time the 'workhorses' get promoted
we just burn through them
and they get naturally replaced :P

And we lose brilliant answerers as well :(

Yes, look at @IvoFlipse. Remember the first 6 months of SU?

well with the new mods I want to get back to asking more questions

8:11 AM
@IvoFlipse was an answer machine.

hell yeah, I wasn't number 5/6 for nothing :P

@Troggy So where you and I

I would actually log in before breakfast and try and answer questions nonstop :P

I took me a year to reach 10K

and I was lucky to have a job that didn't care what I did

8:12 AM
I've been disappointed by the lack of questions I can answer lately. As has been mentioned, a lot are pretty esoteric these days. Chances to gain lots of rep are few and far between lately it seems. But I always do answer the best I can when there's one I can do

Ok, I need to get off my 3G and back to work.
Laters!

which is why I want us to focus on attracting/asking more answerable questions @nhinkle

bye @Diago

I think the blog shows how we can come up with 'holes' in our current knowledge that can use some filling

@IvoFlipse, indeed. I need to take another look at the stuff in that other room, and brainstorm some ideas
There's also some community faq's I want to write/improve

8:14 AM
btw @Troggy I got Sandy Bridge this weekend, but it has been not much but pain so far :P

@IvoFlipse @Diago Yah, I almost had to do what Gnoupi did and take a break due to work demands. I scaled back my involvement and figured out a more manageable involvement routine.
@IvoFlipse Oh, yah? and what did you break first?

first I had trouble installing my watercooling, luckily I didnt have to replace the waterblock
but didn't have any new thermal paste

@IvoFlipse oh ... you did water. May I ask why you went down that route?

then I couldn't figure out where to put all the power cables and case cables (power on and such) everything was slightly different
because it looked awesome? :P

haha
Are you using an internal or external radiator?

8:18 AM
I wonder if they make water cooled laptops....

well it's built into the case
there's a door at the front of the case, which holds it
I've got pics! ;P

@IvoFlipse Yah, once you got that thing up and running, make sure to check it every once in awhile for any potential leaks or issues starting.

well I bought it way back to overclock my e6400, never manage to get it stable properly
but then I couldn't boot properly, turned out to have forgotten some power cables
then I had to rush out and get an SATA dvd drive, didn't have IDE any more
then I had Windows installed, I rushed to install apps and updates: bam BSOD
reinstalled: made another mistake, being too fast or someting

morning all

howdy @DMA57361

8:22 AM
good morning @DMA57361♦

welcome to your first day on the job as a moderator :)

congratulations :)

thanks

congratulations, and prepare to do my and @KronoS's bidding :D

@IvoFlipse If it makes you feel any better, I have had a few issues with my new build from last summer.

8:22 AM
haven't looked at the tools yet

then when I had everything installed, I tried overclocking, got into random reboots

thought'd I'd catch up on the nights transcript first :)

Hardcore lockup crash restarts from my bluray reader

then tuesday I couldn't boot anymore after corrupting something...

and SLI issues

8:22 AM
yuck
I tried reinstaling, Windows was corrupted or something
had to format AGAIN
and now without the overclock it seems stable
but I need to figure out what's holding me back :\

other than that, having 12gb of RAM and a fast system is a very nice feeling.

@KronoS while amusing (and arguably accurate), why me? ... I don't use Java

Just need these SSD's to release the new versions and I will snap up one of them soon. Either Intels new lineup or possibly the Crutial Real

I know, I only have 8 gb but now I never run out

@DMA57361 Welcome buddy.

8:24 AM
and running a quad core at 4.4 Ghz was sick :P
I think I need a new PSU, so I can add more HDDs
as long as my SATA ports don't die on me (darn you Intel!)

@Troggy hi, and thanks :)

Side topic: Anyone here into investing (Stocks, funds, options, blah blah)? I was thinking of starting a chat room for it. Maybe base it from the Personal Finance site.

@Diago fair enough. Love how both @Diago and @random have the I-don't-give-a-shit-about-anything style :D
@rzlines thanks!

I guess not @Troggy ;P

8:37 AM
@Sathya You have to some days. You will see some of the content that roles through SU.

@Troggy agree.

@IvoFlipse Can we not create chat rooms for any of the non-trilogy related sites?

you can create rooms for whatever you like
I do all the time :P

@IvoFlipse Yah, but it keeps associating the room to SU. I think it would be better if it was tied to the personal finance site.

or you can just talk about them here ;)

8:38 AM
I'm going to bed. See you guys tomorrow

@nhinkle night

good night @nhinkle

you can start a room there too @Troggy
sleep well @nhinkle

There we go. I didn't notice the change host feature.
I guess every other room I made was for SU, being that is my default host.

not exactly my cup of tea ;P
don't have any money to invest either

8:54 AM
I would like to retire early and not work so long, so trying to play my cards right.
ok.... when did this clippy feature get added.

lol you surely haven't been on chat that often have you? ;P

I have never had that triggered.
What triggers it?

certain key words like "I ... like ..., want"

I suppose I don't use those words often then, because that was the first time.

@DMA57361 and @Sathya, who feels like notifying our new Indian friend that he should state his affiliation in his posts too, not just his profile?
I wonder if we could script a check, where we check for words in his profile that are also being used in answers

8:57 AM
@IvoFlipse who would that be

I like want (test)
I like want?

no I like

haha

or I want
blabla
I like want

I feel stupid for not knowing about that, but it sure surprised me.

8:58 AM
I would like to retire

@Troggy try something like How would/can I do [le bleh]

how can I retire on it

@IvoFlipse on it

hehe
nvm, he bugs me enough :P

How do I make babby formed?
haha, yes

9:00 AM
oo templates..

answers.yahoo.com/question/… For the clueless...
"It looks like you're trying to make babby formed. Would you like help?

you surely need help if you need ask how
try the other hole for starters

@IvoFlipse saw it, then my phone rang >.<, has it been dealt with?

if that's not possible, try a 'real' girl :P
nope, I left it open
I'm curious as to how it will be handled ;P

I've a feeling @Sathya's looking at it, as per
6 mins ago, by Sathya
@IvoFlipse on it
gah, I want to be in too many rooms :/

9:08 AM
@IvoFlipse Does that only trigger on non Meta SO chat rooms?

@Troggy clippy is for SU

ok, thats why. I rarely ask questions in SU chat rooms, just discussion.

@Troggy there are site-specific triggers :D

yeah, board games has a dice

try rm -rf for SF :P

9:10 AM
The chat rooms on SO and MSO would turn into Egypt right now if that was turned on.
I guess I don't ask enough questions on chat.
So @IvoFlipse specs on this new build?

Do the dismiss flag options remove the flag for all mods, or just from my list?

@DMA57361 All

i5 2500k, 8Gb DDR3, GTX460, OCZ 120Gb (not sure what model)

@Troggy ta

@DMA57361 Have you broken anything yet? Because @Sathya already has. ;)

9:17 AM

@Troggy lol, no I'm still exploring all the tools and pages at the moment

I think I should get another PSU, just to troubleshoot whether I'm power capped
because I do want my system to run at this frequency again :P

@IvoFlipse Show me your CPU-Z memory tab. What did you get your memory stable at?
@IvoFlipse What are you running for a PSU? That is the one area where people really skimp out and should never do so.

I have a 600W PSU

@IvoFlipse No, like which model. That means nothing.

9:19 AM
but I've kept adding stuff, so I think I'm pushing it now
let me check
or is that visible somewhere with a hardware monitor, no right?

LOLWTF
[possibly nsfw]

it's not connected anywhere, expect for power

@IvoFlipse No it wouldn't. The watt rating will vary greatly between brands and quality. I would take a quality 500watt over a 750watt cheapy.

btw @Troggy I used some default settings from the uefi, but currently I'm running things at stock
it's a Zalman, 600W, 84% efficiency
I have 5 HDDs, I guess I should replace my three smaller (500+500+400) ones with a Tb one and dump the rest on external drives

@IvoFlipse With only a single gtx460, I think you are fine.

9:25 AM
and the watercooling + 30% OC?

Overclocking can really ramp up your power usage though.

yeah I'm going from 3.3 to 4.4

should this be migrated to Meta.SO ? @IvoFlipse @Troggy

Q: Unable to access stackexchange sites from this system

Sandeepan NathEarlier, I was not able to access most of the stackexchange sites like stackoverflow, programmers.SE etc. on my home Windows XP system. I was able to access only a few like http://meta.stackexchange.com and not even http://www.meta.stackexchange.com (note the www). I tried many other sites like h...

and you want overhead in a PSU. As you will see in that review, most PSU's are most efficient from 40-60% load.

sigh if I would have to get a 1k watt PSU that's at least another 150 euros

9:28 AM
Uhh, I doubt you need that much. If you add up the max pull ratings of all your hardware, I bet you would come up with a lower number then you think.
That GTX460 can only pull like 150 or 160watts max.
I have 2 of them.
I use a Corsair HX850 850 watt for my i7 SLI setup.

well the strange thing is, when I don't OC it, things are running perfectly stable
and I would get really random reboots with the OC
but temperatures looked save

OC is only as good as your weakest component.

and it wasn't giving any hickups
well, most of it is new by now :P

are you on 115 or 240 power?

240

9:33 AM
They make those cool little devices that you can plug into the wall that will tell you how much your device is pulling. You can connect you computer up and see exactly what is happening.

well at least not on SU :P

and see if it is pushing the limit of your PSU

how much would those cost me? any idea

@IvoFlipse You need this, but for 220v.
I am trying to see if they make a 220 version.

I'm looking at the local retailer

9:40 AM
and that device also works great beyond your computer to figure out where you power draws and drains are coming from.
and to see if that old device is worth leaving plugged in.

I found one for 13 euro, can't break a leg over that one

@Troggy I was trying to find one which works for 220v ( so that I could get one while returning). Never found it ( or I did, but was way too expensive)

10:02 AM
I guess P3 international has many products ... p3international.com/products/consumer/q1052.html
The P3 Itch Soother

10:39 AM
darn @Sathya, I figured out where the problem with the interpreter comes from
I was apparently mixing up Python and iPython

where from ?
@IvoFlipse oh.. how did that happen

the interactive mode I want is apparently a feature of iPython
I'm sure the others can do something similar, but it should be 'default' in iPython
I thought I'd have a look in my book: A primer on scientific programming with Python :P

@IvoFlipse :D
you should write a post on how you set up your workarea @IvoFlipse

> Numpy does not have one standard IDE. However, the IPython environment provides a sophisticated command prompt with full completion, help, and debugging support, and interfaces with the Matplotlib library for plotting and the Emacs/XEmacs editors.
I almost should yeah
though I had set myself a goal to get a darn roll off in a freaking GUI element before the end of the week
and I'm out of the office tomorrow, so I need to get it today

11:12 AM
@IvoFlipse, you about?

I come to serve

what's the procedure for deleting SPAM accounts? Just merge in to the storage account?
see my last deleted post for some context

which account would we be talking about
ah yes you may roll that one up

yeah, it's clearly a trash account
and done

w00t
your first scalp ;P

11:17 AM
lol, something like that :)
presumably merging in to SPAM storage is only for 100% useless accounts? I assume there's not "undo"

there's no undo no
had I done that to the chap who mailed me back
he would have been toast

lol, indeed
if there's even a glimmer of recovery we suspend/contact/etc, I presume?

well I never contact spammer such as these
borderliners might get an email, like @Sathya did
though in some cases I don't even do that, they'll mail me if I made a mistake

fair point, they'll complain about the problem quickly enough
does a suspension block them from MSU as well?

yes :P
so they have to take it to MSO if they even know they can

11:21 AM
fair enough
hmmm... I wonder if they can reply to the new on-site moderator messages if suspended...

they should be able to yes

in Teachers' Lounge, 6 mins ago, by Sam Saffron
More edit suggestion changes ... we nuked a bunch of views we found confusing ... and now all tag wikis always allow for edits ... AND 20k users can edit ANY tag wiki
@IvoFlipse got a reply from that guy.. you folks might have seen it - as ya'll were bcc'd

yeah, they all promise to stop doing it, well that's what we want anyway
you annotated him, so the next time he tries something like this
he's toast

@IvoFlipse Yep..

Diago calls it weak, I call it patient :P
I'll be waiting for him to do it again, only to come back upon him with a vengeance
pff I finally found an example that actually runs :P
I haven't figured out how to import new libraries in a way that actually makes them work :P

11:34 AM
have you tried import ? ;P
seriously, however, in what way don't they work?

hi @Mokubai
I downloaded pygtk

Hey @IvoFlipse How's it going?
GTK any good?

I've heard that pyGTK is simple, but easy
hey @Mokubai

I have to admit QT seems like a cat-herding exercise...
Heya @Sathya

hi @Mokubai

11:36 AM
it exists

Hi @DMA57361

I even made sure I had all the things it was dependable off

2 days ago, by Sathya
@IvoFlipse PyQT has horrible documentation

I added it to my libraries, so it knows where to find it
but it gave me some stupid errors

@IvoFlipse what's the error

11:38 AM

Urgh, the nightmare of trying to get Eclipse to actually work out libraries

for some reason it translates the end of the message to Dutch
well I managed to get the rest working @Mokubai
seems I was doing certain things wrong, because Spyder took care of it :P

seems like a 32-bit/64-bit mismatch @IvoFlipse

hmmm that might be, but I don't think there's a 64 bit version then

@IvoFlipse From what I can tell, this page in Eclipse is mainly only used for the code-completion part of pydev, when you run a program as long as the modules are in the site-packages dir then Python itself will deal with it

11:40 AM
anyway I was looking at other tutorials and the Tkinter one worked :P
it draws the figure dynamically
which is exactly what I want
so I'm just going to see how it works and replace the bits I want to see if I can reproduce it

is there a windows version of glib for python, isn't glib a linux thing?

but I do have to learn how to use matplotlib more in an OOP fashion
the installer is for windows @Mokubai
you know what's funny though, the code for this small GUI is 334 lines
which is almost as much as the code to process all my results o.O

Yeah, coding a gui seems a bit laughable these days, the code just to make a window, put a button in it, then connect that button to some code is longer than the code to write out a pdf file...

it almost makes me want to go and learn c#
or c++ to be a bit more versatile
I reckon learning c# after c++ is easier, after you've bitten the bullet

I've not looked into either, though they are on my "list of things to do when I've won the lottery and have loads of free time"

11:49 AM
quit your job and you'll have loads ;P

lol
C++ will teach you thing you don't need to know in C#, that's not necessarily a bad thing thou

Yeah, but then I have the cash-flow & loads-of-bills problems

naah, I'm still alive aren't I?

:) yup the darn job eats into education all the time

indeed @rzlines!
I made it my job to learn new things ;P

11:51 AM
hated that I had to pursue post graduation part time coz I didnt have time for lectures
:) I'd love that job alright @IvoFlipse

which is why I didn't go for a phd (yet) at a university

yea i applied
and quit it coz i had to stay there for a year
instead of the stipulated 6 months, the company wouldn't grant the leave
grrr...

I do need to get a followup project fast, which is why I want some GUI elements to have others tinker with my results, so they'll value it some more
:( that sucks @rzlines
what field are you in?

business management
was pursuing a phd in the same
not many takers in that field really

what would have been the topic?

11:55 AM
i think i was the youngest there and almost cleared my proposal hadn't it been for the mandatory credit system
making profit in the non-profit sector was the vague title
of the proposal kinda contradictory but I had my research in place to prove it

but what would they do with the profit? I reckon cut on grant proposals instead?

yea sort of help sustain other ventures and self sustain the institution itself
too much relies on external funding

hehe, you mean like I do ;P

:) lol
