@Sathya @DMA57361 @studiohack Guys, please remember when you create tag synonyms to merge them afterwards :)
Although I shouldn't be telling you this, it keeps me ahead on the moderator dashboard.

hey @Diago long time no see

@Diago: I'm planning to do that when I'm finished with the list

@KronoS Cool

just so you know...okay? @Diago

@studiohack You're braver then I am :P

8:18 PM
@Diago: how come? to merge? :P lol

Just don't lose track of them! Haha

@studiohack Sorry, just needed you guys to remember, since it's the one step we all forget about
@studiohack Too create them, that list is massive.
And the creation process is not simple, and definitely not optimised for mass creation

it is massive lol, I'm working on it :P

Should what be deleted?

I'm watching! :)

8:21 PM
whistles innocently

lol

It's official. I have 1 PC left in my house

@Diago Shouldn't they auto-merge? Or is there a reason not to?

Everything else has now been replaced with an Apple device of some kind
@TomWij Auto merge? Explain?

After you create the synonym, is there a reason that you still need to manually merge it?

8:23 PM
@Diago you're an apple guy?

@TomWij Yeah, that's the way the system is built. Also, we have to manually merge every few days due to migrated questions etc.
Tags are heavily cached, and probably the reason why it's a manual merge, to check and make sure each one is relevant.
Also, with the voting system, auto-merge is dangerous if a mod doesn't approve the merge. I have had to fix double merges a few times already
@KronoS Yep. I am a .Net developer but my hardware preference is Apple.
ANd my father bought me and my wife new Apple iPad on Tuesday, which meant my wife decided to give her PC the boot and switch to her MacBook Pro, and I kicked out my Netbook for the iPad.

@TomWij: good job on the flags! :)

Wil
@Diago Just make sure you don't replace any motherboards :S .....

Oh, and I just need to replace my wired router and DSL router with Apple one's.
@Wil I've never had to, and that's what extended warranties are therefore.
And buy a third Apple Expess

People who understand networking actually buy Apple networking equipment?

Wil
8:27 PM
@Diago Lol.... just a little joke ^^^

Isn't it RIDICULOUSLY overpriced? (I may have the wrong perception having actually not dealt with it)

@studiohack :)

Wil
Not just over priced, it is crap in comparison :S performance sucks when I last looked

@Shinrai It's worth every cent. Like every apple product. I have 2 expresses running my wireless N network, extended, and I NEVER have to reboot them except for power outages
My last MacBook is 4 years old, and still gets 5 hours battery life on the original battery7

@studiohack: Well, I've been going through the tags all day and almost had to type nothing to get to daily rep cap today.

8:28 PM
how did you do that @TomWij?

So I really got nothing else to do on Super User than reviewing (or answering more but then I'm losing reputation).

to get the daily cap?

Oh, I'm not debating that they generally make good hardware, just that I thought the routers etc were a total ripoff. (I don't remember the last time I had to reboot my router, to be fair hehe)

I went through 9 wireless routers, including Linksys before get the Apple one's
And I don't regret it. But, you have to have the money for it, and I am by no means insisting the world must turn to Apple
My experience with Apple, has been nothing but awesome, and to me worth the premium.

@studiohack: Go to my profile, audit my reputation, watch the bottom of the long list. Just by ~5 answers I've hit the daily reputation cap... ._.

8:31 PM
@TomWij GOSH, Tom, stop giving such good answers and you won't have that problem!

We currently have 2 x 15" i7 MacBook Pro's, with 8GB RAM and 500GB 7200RPM drives and they have replaced our desktops completely.

A: Strange directory under C: of Windows 7

TomWijGoogled the KBxxxxxx numbers, shows that the folder contains a .NET Framework setup. It is safe to delete as it is solely an installer...

congratulations @TomWij :)

@Shinrai: Problem is, today the answers aren't that good at all.

@TomWij Those are normally created by installers while they are running, and they are meant to be deleted. However they sometimes get left behind.
Some added info if you want to add it.

8:32 PM
I haven't answered a question for a while, at least a couple of days if you look at my profile
which is why I make a good moderator :P

@Diago I would guess that this is done by a OEM install.

@TomWij I wasn't going to say anything, but I didn't upvote that one you just linked because it felt kind of halfhearted. :3 Regardless, if you're getting rep it has to be for a reason, right!

@TomWij Nope, a few installers do it. It's an artifact of InstallShield if I recall correctly.

Q: How do Windows domains work?

user65971Hi, I have a question on Windows. I saw that I can make PC_A an e.g. Windows Server 2008 a domain controller simply by running dcpromo After that, I can create a user e.g. George, which is a user in the domain of controller e.g DOMAIN_ABC. Now I go to another PC_B and if I change the DNS serve...

Hmm, I'm still getting reputation...

8:34 PM
look at this wonderful piece of art

The daily cap is 200, or am I wrong?

You can normally see it when you install software like VS 2010 and SQL Server for example because they take so long.
@TomWij For upvotes only
Everything else is immune to the rep cap

it is 200 @TomWij

@Diago: Then how did I just got more than that?

@TomWij 200 from votes only, doesn't limit accepts or bounties IIRC

8:35 PM
Oh... Accepts! :D

Yeah I don't think there's a cap on rep from accepts or bounti-er what @DMA57361 said

@TomWij As I said, everything else is immune to the cap, so you get rep for bounties and accepts.

Would make sense, 2 accepts = 30.

@TomWij: what is the stuff in the red?
in your screenshot?

Afternoon, everyone.

8:36 PM
and also, I'm curious about what the (audit) part is?
afternoon @MarkSzymanski

@studiohack: Daily reputation, it's a script I got from sosmewhere.

2:35 PM for you, correct? :P

True.

@TomWij how'd you get that rep for the day?

The audit is from rebecca's extension

8:36 PM
@TomWij: You mean from here?

@TomWij: and the lighter red print is the time left to a new day?

@MarkSzymanski: Yes, that's where the audit is from.
One moment guys.

what does the audit do?

It's just a link to there.

oh, a rep recalc?

8:37 PM
For "audting" your rep.
Sort of.

makes sense, that's what I was thinking, but couldn't be sure...

It just shows how much rep you got/lost.

thanks @MarkSzymanski
:)

You're welcome, @studiohack.

@studiohack Yes.
Indexing disks...
Gonna try to find the daily script.

8:39 PM
sure if you want @TomWij

fun fact about studiohack: I've never ever hit the reputation cap. ever.

I've hit it. Once.

closest I ever got was like 180 or 190 I think

Got 50 rep taken away a day later XD

8:40 PM
have you kept all of your rep @MarkSzymanski from that night when user xyz upvoted you to 2K?

XD
Yes.

good to hear. :P
you did get a downvote thoug

I got one? o.o
Where? o.o
Oh.

A: How to select columns in editor view for Eclipse on OSX

Mark SzymanskiYou can hold down Option while selecting, your cursor should change into a plus sign, then you can select rectangularly. This works in nearly any application, by the way.

@MarkSzymanski to find downvotes you've recieved do a search for (-2) on /reputation :)

Good idea XD

8:43 PM
265 rep

Wow. Apparently this was a pretty good answer. I got 13 upvotes from it.

A: On Mac OS X how can I see how much memory is being used by what programs?

Mark SzymanskiYou can use the Activity Monitor application. It is located in /Applications/Utilities/Activity Monitor.app. And here is a screenshot with the columns for memory usage highlighted:

goes to recalc days till 10k
Hmm, if I want to, in two weeks; but will probably be a month though...

Windows Home Server 2011 Release Candidate is out.

@Diago: You spelled it wrong.

Q: A bunch of tag rename/synonym requests

TomWij(See related chat discussion here) NOTE: Most are small, so doesn't need special moderator attention, just update my post when you help. Proposed tag renames/synonyms: (old tag --> new tag) .net --> .net-framework (and all version variants) hd --> 720p fullhd --> 1080p 3d --> more specific 3d...

i added to your list @TomWij

8:46 PM
@MarkSzymanski Actually I used it for a long time, and I am thinking of trying the RC

oh shoot, at @KronoS, that's gonna mess me up
RE: the Tag-rename request list

@DMA57361 - Thanks for the hint to check downvotes because I was actually curious. Apparently I've only had one ever. Go me~

I added it to the end if that helps @studiohack

well I have my edit open, so we'll see @KronoS

And wegotserved.com has just been brought down with their own mass mail.

8:48 PM
@Shinrai nice. I've only ever recieved two, one of which was since the election started :)

@studiohack if my edit gets lost in oblivion there was only one...

I'll copy/paste my edit, leave w.o. saving, and then update with yours. @KronoS

They either merge or it is just lost, but it isn't hard to track that in history...
But the system doesn't warn you about that sometimes. :(

yeah, it doesn't tell me that @KronoS has updated the answer... @TomWij :(

Do the moderator flags you can use refresh each day?

8:53 PM
@MarkSzymanski yes

Thanks @DMA57361.

you get 10 + 1 for each 1k rep you have

Q: Hard Drive failure - Data recovery

aCuriaI am helping a family member with a dead hard disk. It is a seagate 200Gb 3.5" HDD in one of those old-school external enclosures. The problem was that windows failed to detect the hard disk when plugged in through USB. I removed the hard disk from its enclosure, and plugged it into my desktop P...

Oh I didn't realize it scaled, clever

8:54 PM
@MarkSzymanski also, your last one doesn't look like an answer, but it's by the OP so it is really...

For those interested in community wiki, the above question sure is a duplicate, we might want to community-faq-propose the original.

This one?

@DMA57361: I deleted it and put his post as an update/edit to his OP
@MarkSzymanski

indeed, but that just leaves us with a question post that contains the answer

@DMA57361: That one isn't an answer. It doesn't answer the question, does it? It's just a comment the OP added for more information

8:56 PM
yes, it either belongs as a comment or an update to the original question. thanks for flagging it @MarkSzymanski

You're welcome, @studiohack.

correct me if I'm wrong @DMA57361

true, but it's a quick re-arrange away :) as in "You need to do remame filelist.txt %date%%time%"
doesn't really matter, it's not a particularly good question in my eyes anyway :)

@TomWij I think that question may follow the dr strange dupe
esp since it's troubleshooting a USB external recovery like that...

@KronoS: No different.
All those questions end into answers with PhotoRec/TestDisk/SpinRite/... suggestions.
I could compose one simple answer (connect to PC and run TestDisk, then SpinRite and go post it on all those questions)

9:00 PM
Yeah that one is a dupe, more or less. It comes up a lot. I probably would have flagged myself if I'd stopped to think about it but I /do/ think the freezer suggestion is one that should be made more often
even today surprisingly few people know about it

It would be nice to have a community faq question show up as possible duplicate when they ask the question, and it would also be easy to link to.
what...

Way 2 go @studiohack

merge. yes merge! repeat

Bad bot D:
Rawr.

@studiohack: Whoa... :O
@studiohack:
- hd --> 720p - Changed to high-definition <-- Doesn't say done.
- bandwith --> bandwidth <-- bandwith is a word that doesn't exist, typo
- downloads --> download <-- downloads is the plural form of download, see the questions in that tag
- power-line-networking --> powerline-networking Rejected (same?) <-- not the same, differs by a dash: -.

be back to finish merging in a few @TomWij

just cut the hell out of my thumb on a firepro 2460 trying to dislodge a sticky sata cable >.< oh the hazards of system building

9:31 PM
Those that I linked are small mistakes you made, but you've really done a great job non-the-less. :-)
- [fullhd] questions retagged, they were both worth 1080p, [fullhd] does no longer exist

There should be an hd.se site for TV questions.
Or is there already one?
checks

9:53 PM
what is the deal with all the 3d questions???

@Kyle: Grouping them in more specific tags, just the [3D] in ambiguous.
Don't worry, won't do more than the [3D] tag for today.

ah, that makes sense.

This is the nerdiest valentine's day gift ever.

Q: Searching for a good usb camera which can rotate to check a whole plane

user1190I'm looking forward buying a camera which can check 180 degrees on 2 axis. To make this a programming question, i'll ask for a good camera which can check 360 degrees on 2 axis with a good API. How can I achieve that with a computer? Edit : I'd like to have the user check the camera for me in...

Does that count as a shopping rec?

9:57 PM
it is, but it is useful...

The user does attempt to make it on topic, so I wasn't sure.

gonna leave it for now, and see what happens
I edited out the 'good' etc

K I won't waste a flag then

- All questions from the [3D] tag have been retagged.
@studiohack: Are you still editing in my question or should I update it?

go ahead and update @TomWij - I'm merging right now, and will return to your post in a bit - can you add your edits you mentioned above into your post, so that I can find it easier?
and thanks a lot for putting all of those tags into one comprehensive list!! kudos to @TomWij! :-)
somebody star that

10:00 PM
@studiohack: okay, still read through the points above though, the ones you rejected could easily be done/approved (you misread I think)

@TomWij: it is very possible I misread, when I see all that plain text in the editing page, I can miss stuff more easily...so I apologize...

I love it when I can close a 2 year old question because of a policy change

@studiohack: The "Rejected" are still left (see pts above); and the "To Be Done"'s have to be done manually (I could do it), and the "To Be Discussed" is something we can discuss later.

For the new mods. To deal with the following question, hit the delete button hard, it will destroy any editors will to try and fix it.

@studiohack: Would suggest to put the [status-completed] once you're done. :-)

I bet you have :/

@studiohack How about closing this one as off topic?

@Diago I thought about adding block quotes but I don't think it would have helped

@Diago: WOW. that is the worst post I have seen ever (yet) on SU?!

Speaking of off-topic...

Q: How to pronounce "AJAX"

James WoodI have wondered for a while about how I should pronounce "AJAX" (asynchronous JavaScript and XML). I usually say "I-acs" (that's a capital i at the start, as in "bye"), as in the Amsterdam football club, but should I say "a-jacs" (as it looks in English) or simply as the acronym "A-J-A-X"? Or doe...

@Kyle I would rather prefer not to let the community editors need glassed after an edit.
@Shinrai Nice find. English SE here I come.

haha true, it looked just as ridiculous after adding them...

@Diago I did a double-take when I just refreshed that tab, haha. I mean, okay, I /guess/ I can see why you'd ask that here but...cmon now. Hahaa

Wonder how shocked their mods will be for a SU question migrated there.
3

lol @Diago

10:09 PM
I actually think it's a good English SE question

I can think of worse, yeah
...actually, their mods will probably cringe at the attempted phonetic pronunciation hahah

On that note, it's quarter past midnight, and I have to work tomorrow. Then roll on weekend.
And since I just got every machine in the house on the wireless, including the printer, excluding the server, I've had a good evening.

Grats! Have a good night. :)

goodnight @Diago
hi folks. who's here and what's going on?

good night @Diago, glad you're on my team :)
hey @nhinkle

10:13 PM
I'm here, but quiet, and @TomWij and @studiohack have retagged the entire site :)

just lazing around as a moderator, nobody can find me any work? @nhinkle

...that sounds like a challenge
BRB posting question about circumventing adobe DRM in photoshop

@DMA57361: I'm not done yet :P

@studiohack Weren't my tags enough? :D

...on an xbox360

10:14 PM
nahh @TomWij. jk! lol

But well, off to StarCraft II and other stuff.
Have been active here for 12 hours. :/

most of the credit goes to @TomWij: I can't really fathom how he came up with such a list and a longgg one too!

Tags --> Sort by name --> Go page by page reading tag by tag.

that's crazy! you need a tag warrior badge @TomWij

There are still cross-matches for which I have another technique (which I never finished at Programmers.SE), but that's for another time.
And I need the 10k tools for that technique to be consistent in time...

10:19 PM
@TomWij: TAG MASTER.
No synonym is too small to escape his mighty gaze!

@MarkSzymanski: just edited one of your tags on a question, no worries, just needed to do that for merge purposes

Well, summing up the tags like this prevents me from having to flood the front page every time I find a single one, might still find the cross-matches (which don't have similar names) but will find a lot less than usual...

good job @TomWij :D
keep our new moderators busy
i've been working on some web development
making a wordpress plugin to integrate wordpress login with the college's single-sign-on

off to gaming, and I'm doing some web development tomorrow

stupid SSO page isn't returning the right data though >.<

10:25 PM
off to bed, cya all tomorrow

see ya @DMA57361 :)
btw, it is ironic, because we elected three different moderators from 3 different time zones, without even trying...

@studiohack that's not irony, just coincidence ;)

@studiohack from the US, @DMA57361 from the UK, and @Sathya from India

convenient.
...or is it all part of an insidious plot?

probably both @Shinrai

Wil
10:43 PM
Phew... all worked out well, talked to the man whose computer caught on fire! - I have a blank cheque to get it working... so, going to send this motherboard back on RMA, going to try once more with a new power unit (just in case), and if it doesn't work, going to get him a second hand machine of similar age as it is all he really needs...

I've got an old dual Xeon tower I'm looking to sell, @Wil, just sayin' hahaha

Why do I read this and all I can see is "I never close the screen on my fireplace and now my house is on fire"

Wil
@Shinrai Where are you!? and, I am guessing that will be a bit louder though!?

11:02 PM
@Shinrai Heh, sorry about that
Bad edit

@Wil - Just a little bit hahahahahaha. It's circa 2002, the Xeons aren't even 32-bit. Still pretty peppy though!
@digitxp - What? I thought it was funny haha.

Wil
@Shinrai I have a quad xeon (P4 era) under my desk, 10 scsi bays and more... got it in an office clearance and never used it once :( wish I sold it at the time... probably only worth a few pence now... or more in scrap metal, it weighs a tonne!

@Wil Yeah, no, this thing is a standard full tower (an old Lian Li case actually). And uh I meant not 64-bit obviously derp!

FWIW, I have an Xeon Server and it runs Fedora 12 very well
I use it as a basic home server

Wil
heh, long day, I didn't catch you out on the 32 bit ithing!

11:06 PM
I was using it as my main workstation until I just built this 2600K box. The longevity of the things is amazing
although the AGP graphics kinda hurts :/

Wil
the thing is though, the quad xeons, it looks cool.... but, I plugged it in to a monitor and it uses about 4 amps.... I could buy a Core I5 and it will probably run faster and pay for itself in energy savings within a few months!

user30
AGP graphics are classy.

@Shinrai Still, it'd be disrespectful. And since this place is the only spot on the web w/ respect, at least for me...

Wil
mind you, I wonder.... quad dual core xeons, vs 1 I5 - the I5 is a lot newer and will do standard stuff a lot faster, but I wonder if under load (e.g. 100%) the xeons will come in to their own

They would, under properly threaded load.
I mean, my 2600K smokes the 980X I have across the room...until I kick in the extra two cores. hahahah

Q: A Windows Vista machine will not boot - "Missing Operating System" error

WilSeeming as quite a few of the "Related Questions" have answers by me, I am rather embarrassed to ask this, but I hope someone can help. I do have a solution to this problem, however, I would rather not proceed if I can help it. A friend of a friend gave me a computer to repair that would not boo...

doesn't even really have a good answer! :S
well, someone tried, but it didn't work

Yeah that's a weird one.
you tried manually rebuilding the bootloader?

Wil
It is too old now, so maybe I should just write my answer, I fixed it by doing a full format and copying their data back, but it got the better of me
all the data appeared to be there, the MBR/partition table just became corrupt and I tried rebuilding, but it didn't work :(
spent 3 days doing it in the end... so, officially, I fixed it, but I didn't like my fix!

I figured that was the 'I have an answer' you didn't want to do in the question, yeah.
Nuking it from orbit is the only way to be sure!

Wil
11:30 PM
yeah, well, there was no (physical) damage at all,which makes me wonder how this could of happened
and they were not modders/tinkerer type people who mess around with tools that could do that damage
Anyway.... I am bored, just keep refreshing my profile page waiting for my age to go up one! (not joking), so, going to take my dogs out on a walk! talk to you later!

Cosmic rays. (I'm serious)
Bit flipped in the wrong place1

Hey, I need some help, but I don't think I should ask this question on SU...
My motherboard blew a compacitor
I need another AM2+ motherboard
I have a caviar black WD HDD that is 6GB/s
I would like to finally utilize it
Is there an AM2+ 6GB/s mobo out there? I can't find one. I tried searching newegg with no avail...

My Spidey-sense is saying "Fat chance"

that's what I was thinking...

AM2+ is just a LITTTTLE too outdated, I would be pretty surprised.
more surprised than even finding like an LGA775 board with it

11:38 PM
:D

I mean honestly though, the drive should work and I don't think it's saturating 3GB/s let alone 6

You know they are about to come out with AM3+?

maybe if you had a few RAIDed it would be an issue

it is going to be for the Bulldozer

but I would just stick with SATA2 spec. throughput will probably be identical

11:39 PM
Thank you for confirming that for me @Shinrai!
bye
