pair of macs?
also does a normal C to C cable work or is there some special kind of cable for tbolt?
bvckup2.com/wip/10042018 this seems fun (little disk-speed/IO monitor tool by the guys who do bvckup)

12:25 AM
@JourneymanGeek for your edification, there is a separate Thunderbolt 3 cable
I think it has additional wiring even though it's mechanically compatible with USB-C backwards and forwards

two Thunderbolt devices connected with a USB-C cable can communicate over 10 Gbps, but it can theoretically reach 40 Gbps (if both ends support it) with a real T-bolt cable
also, real T-bolt cables are about 2-3 times more expensive than USB-C to USB-C cables

I actually have a Macbook Pro 2016 connected to an Alienware 13 R3... both running Windows :P

12:27 AM
"Thunderbolt Networking" appears as a NIC when you plug 'em in, it's an Intel device driver
and it's 10 gig

My razer blade stealth has the driver and the interface
nothing else does

though in theory it could move 20 Gbps of data - 10 in each direction
I downloaded a 40 GiB game in a couple minutes from one SSD to the other
it was glorious

and well, the next systems in rotation for upgrade are my desktop and my "throw in my bag" laptop

TB3 is pretty useful imo

(and ugh, no good tbolt options on desktop?)

12:28 AM
even for thin and lights (especially? for thin and lights)

I kinda want one of these aliexpress.com/store/product/…
It pushes all my buttons, other than ugh, I don't need another laptop now :(
(also no tbolt, but USB charging)

Ave
12:48 AM
@JourneymanGeek same, but it's way too expensive for what it is

@Ave on the other hand, it probably dosen't really have the same economies of scale, + not particularly shit screen
++ yes. Its pretty pricy.
If it was like 300 quid and didn't have the silly gaming controls...

Ave
if it didn't come with windows, was half the price and had a better keyboard, I'd buy it.

pretty hard to get a better keyboard at that size IMO
I'm ok with windows, + I have my magic porta drive
but A chromebook probably makes more sense (especially since they will run full linux apps soon), or another stream if i wanted to upgrade
and.. my stream's holding up well.
even if I'm running out space for stickers ;)

1:15 AM
hm
Hm

1 hour later…
2:35 AM
...and got a new office chair.

3:07 AM
@allquixotic So... worth losing some of the PCIe bandwidth on the graphics card to get Thunderbolt 3 capability?

@bwDraco actually you wouldn't

No. If there's a PCIe card in the second slot, the graphics card drops to x8. It's the way the Ryzen platform operates.

Also only works on Asus iirc. Video is a pass through
You can use it on a lower bandwidth slot

It's an ASUS board.

That isn't x16?

3:11 AM
The first slot is x16, but if the second slot is populated, it drops to x8, and both slots operate at x8. The third slot is PCIe 2.0 x4 (mechanically x16) from the chipset.
Hmm... card is discontinued and may not be compatible with non-Intel platforms.

3:38 AM
...these old linear "wall wart" power supplies can be downright dangerous under certain conditions. Not only do they lack short-circuit, overload, and over-temperature protection, if I mistakenly connect another power source in series with it (e.g. reversed the connection when trying to recharge a battery), the two power sources will collectively drive more power through the resulting short-circuit than would ever be possible if I simply shorted the output on the linear supply.
The supply drew some 27W on the Kill A Watt meter at one point before I realized I reversed the polarity of the connection.
A properly-designed SMPS should just shut down if it detects this condition.

Bob
"If I hack around and do unsupported things, dangerous things can happen."

This condition can not only cause both the connected battery to be drained rapidly (and possibly reverse-charged), it can result in catastrophic failure of the supply and possibly a fire.

Bob
It's like "Why doesn't Windows stop me from deleting System32?! A properly designed OS should just shut down if someone tries to do that."

Obviously, this is a mistake, but AIUI a protected supply will not allow this to occur.
But blah. Safety standards were simply not as stringent back then.

3:57 AM
@Bob The difference is that physical safety is implicated. The OS example doesn't involve a fire hazard.

4:23 AM
Knight Club, HitchHiker, Quiet City & Uurnog are free until Jun 1st on the Humble Bundle website

Quality advertising on AliExpress!

> 1* description

@Bob Just know that they want to do better

You can safely remove your USB drives! Only USD 44.90! Hurry!

._.
That was slightly sad
I got around a block on a website by my ISP pretty trivially

4:33 AM
@JourneymanGeek By making sad puppy eyes?

~/speedtest ?

@Bob Descriptions are important!

@ThatBrazilianGuy yes putty tunnel to my server, socks v5 and proxying dns too

> trivially

I probably need a slightly less obvious way to document it tho
@ThatBrazilianGuy didn't need to install anything I didn't have

4:35 AM
@JourneymanGeek Wait, you can do SSH tunneling... On Windows... Using putty?

4:59 AM
@ThatBrazilianGuy actually, this might be handy the next time my ISP starts doing strange crap that's actually a bug

5:31 AM
@JourneymanGeek Wait now I just noticed, what do you mean your ISO is blocking stuff? I thought that happened only in oppresive states like China, North Korea, and the UK.
@JourneymanGeek I have a VPN which is good for privacy, circumventing blocks and Adblock. Killing 3 bugs with one OpenVPN.

Ave
@ThatBrazilianGuy which vpn?

Ave
I personally have my own VPN and PIA. PIA's blocked in turkey but I get it to work anyways.

0_0
It works now so I can't get a screenshot

@Ave I... Just... Said? OpenVPN.

Ave
5:45 AM
openvpn is a software.

I built my own VPN. With blackjack. And routers.

Ave
Not a service
ah

@ThatBrazilianGuy so, there's a list of about 100 sites blocked by our information ministry
@ThatBrazilianGuy @Ave true, but openvpn is hardly trivial.

Ave
hm?

IMHO, less trivial than tunneling with putty and a socks proxy. Specially after I found a next next ok bash script for it :)

5:47 AM
@ThatBrazilianGuy "next next ok bash script"

@JourneymanGeek Pffft. Our police blocked WhatsApp on three separate occasions.

That is not how we do things
@Ave portable app on the client side, something almost every server has on the other

I'm lazy and apparently that's a positive trait for geeks.
@JourneymanGeek Hm?

Openvpn is awesome and I'll be setting that or zerotier.
BUT its a little too much work for "wait what? Oh let me try this!"
Its a bit like the difference between 3d printing a part, and bodging something together with superglue, sheet styrene and tape.
2

I got it working in maybe half an hour, or one hour.

5:51 AM
2 minutes. ._.
and a bit of that was "eh, its still wrong. Ah hah!"

One hour two years ago and it's still going without any issues.

Ave
@JourneymanGeek it's gh/Nyr/openvpn-install I believe
@ThatBrazilianGuy main difference between socks5 and openvpn is, openvpn covers all internet, socks5 is only for browser etc

@Ave i donno. to me, beating into working is half the fun

Ave
Over the last 3 years I set up openvpn more than a dozen times.
It lost the fun aspect.

eh, that would do it ;)

5:53 AM
OpenVPN on has native clients for almost every distro, or at least the big ones, plus Windows and Android and I bet mac os and iOS too
@Ave Why?
Once for each member of your ever expanding harem? :P

@ThatBrazilianGuy errr. which is cool
but but
I don't have it right now to literally get one file and ugh. ;p

Ok I see your point.

I mean
if i routinely need to do this. yes

@JourneymanGeek What's zerotier?

@ThatBrazilianGuy really cool networking thing zerotier.com ;p
Its a bit like... hamachi?
but you can run your own
But yanno
I don't really need a site to site vpn until I move out

6:05 AM
network virtualization... software defined networking (SDN)... peer to peer network... VXLAN-like network virtualization layer... VPNs, SDN, and SD-WAN
I know two of those terms
(P2P and VPN)
I don't know what the others mean or how they fit or if it's all buzzwords
@JourneymanGeek From the site looks like you need a paid subscription even to run your own server. No "community edition"

> Unlimited Devices With DIY Controllers

@ThatBrazilianGuy buzzwords? hum murmur drone hiss ringing fizz purr sibilation whisper fizzle ring whir

> 100 Devices at Our ZeroTier Central

@JourneymanGeek I remember Hamachi existed but never used it so I don't remember what it did exactly or how it worked

SDN - software defined network
SD-WAN - software defined wan
you run a thing. someone else runs a thing.
and magically you're in a VPN with data sent from A to B, negotiated by a system in between
No need for port forwards or anything
so I could set up a controller, throw on the client on systems, and just, well, have everything, phones, PC, etc on the same lan at the same time

6:10 AM
WOW

very useful for lan gaming behind a nat, or on older apps that only work on a lan

And let me see if I got it straight.

That is the wrong screenshot
Is this one of those things that is "fixed" yet?
Bad DPI in apps on Windows 10?

I could use my own hardware and infrastructure to build my own zerotier without paying them a monthly tax?

@MichaelFrank kinda sorta
@ThatBrazilianGuy yes

6:12 AM
WOW

you do need one system open to the internet (so not behind a lan)

That's cool in a "the guys at work will be drooling all over it" level

and I've not actually done it
its just one of those projects that's been on the backburner a while

Heh... the Zero Tier logo is two lines away from becoming the Deathly Hallows.

6:17 AM
@JourneymanGeek I'm on a 15" laptop w/ 1920x1080 resolution.

._.
@MichaelFrank Ive personally never had issues in most cases with DPI
granted I don't notice the problem in your screenshot... so ugh

Oh, there's a difference between the...sharpness(?) in the Windows UI text and the App text.
ooooh it's the 125% thingy...

....
hah
I thought at that size and res you'd leave it as default

It automatically sets to 125%
I didn't realise it had though.
Changed it back to 100% and it looks SO MUCH BETTER

6:38 AM
quack

Can anyone here read 中文?

errr
I think there's two ethnic chinese users I can remember. neither can read chinese XD

I have a user manual but the translation is not the best, so I was hoping that someone could read the Chinese version and explain it to me

ANNND the one person I can ask. Her chinese is terrible too

@JourneymanGeek dangit
Never mind then, I'll figure something out

6:59 AM
@rahuldottech That second character and this,

I cannot argue with that

7:13 AM
@ThatBrazilianGuy if you're curious - this is what the actual page looks like i.stack.imgur.com/RgA3x.png

@ThatBrazilianGuy No, India does it too.
And oppressive is a relative term.

@JourneymanGeek But there's the Cookie banner for that site. I thought blocking means you cannot access the site.

@RogUE that's the blocked page ;p
the actual page looks different

@RogUE the cookie banner is for my ISP

7:17 AM
That's how a blocked page looks in my country.

ah
saves bandwidth ;p

@JourneymanGeek Is that a Telco? Why is Singapore blocking it?

@ThatBrazilianGuy the telco is blocking the site cause the singapore courts asked them to

@JourneymanGeek The banner specifically says the URL. Why would an ISP show a cookie banner?

\o/
Its starhub
they... do strange things

7:20 AM
Yeah but WHY? Court member fought with his wife? Angel told him to? The stars are aligned?

like breaking my ipv4 networking, but not my ipv6 networking
and blocking arbitrary sites
@ThatBrazilianGuy well someone had a court order on said site.
Cause they can't mail them bobcats anymore.

Oh no wait, starbucks is your ISP and they're blocking totally-not-female-schnauzers.com

@JourneymanGeek I think the site is doing the blocking, not the ISP.

Or something like that

@ThatBrazilianGuy starbuck is my co-pilot ISP and they're blocking wauzerbay? ;p
Pity I already have a spare domain for internal things
otherwise I would SO register wauzerbay.tld for that

7:24 AM
It's 4:25am and I should be sleeping.
@JourneymanGeek I want a tld mostly so I can have servicenames@mytld.com and fight spam
But I can't settle for a name for like two years or more

@ThatBrazilianGuy I have... 3 domains?
One's from waaaay back, I abandoned it cause I was broke, and got it back cause MIIINEEEE
(so journeymangeek.com for blog lupinenet.com for internal apps, lupinenet.co.uk (my original domain) for testing

Someone registers my-EXTREMELY-NO-REALLY-I-EVER-MET-FIVE-PERSONS-WITH-IT-first-name.com.br and did NOTHING with it.

So I need to think of a unique word to identify me all over the internet
But branding is hard.

.... damn it
hah
there's a bunch of thatbrazilianguy.tld domains unregistered.

7:31 AM
Yeah but that moniker doesn't mean much inside Brazil. And I'd have to spell it and people would ask "what?". And I don't know if I want to be known primarily for my place of origin (I mean, in the context of this chat room it's ok but broader than that? Dunno)
Then I start thinking if I want to be recognized by my own real name or if I want anonymity

;p
I kinda hit my current branding mostly by accident
lupinenet's from my teens when I was crazy about wolves ;p

Then I think what kind of things I'd do with a domain. Start a blog? About what? Would I ever do something? Do I even exist?

they're cool animals.

I need a word that is unique enough to identify me, but not unique enough that it won't work if I ever decide to completely change my areas of interest. And that works and sounds nice in both English and Portuguese.
sigh
So very probably a made up word that sounds nice

7:52 AM
@rahuldottech Can you try the Google Translate app for Android? It's normally pretty good at making sense of stuff.

10:59 AM
So I'm in Scotland and it's baking!!
@MichaelFrank with the Google translate message I was expecting Morse code

@djsmiley2k Noice :D
Welcome to Scotland, hope you don't get stabbed by a mad kiltwearing bam, etc
(actually: Glasgow's knife crime has substantially decreased since it was the 'stabbing capital of Europe')

11:28 AM
.... Barn?
It's a bairn

Bam, short for bampot
A bairn could also be a bam... but unlikely at that age

11:49 AM
closest thing south of the border would be a chav

Hi @bertieb.

@FaheemMitha Afternoon, how goes it?

@bertieb Just sitting here, typing away. Are you a Mercurial or Git user?

@FaheemMitha Ah, I'm taking a break from gardening myself (not easy with two broken fingers)! Git, but I'm not really a developer :P

11:53 AM
@bertieb Ok. Two broken fingers??!!
What happened?

Ya! Got 'em caught in a motorbike chain (oops)

Unfortunately, most people are using Git now. Git really should be called Borg. Because, assimilation.
@bertieb That sounds horrible.

RA's been lovely and supportive :)

@bertieb RA's?

@FaheemMitha Yea, I wouldn't recommend it (you can see xrays if you search chat)
Root Access :D

11:55 AM
@bertieb I believe you.
Ah, Root Access.
Well, motorbikes are dangerous.
Not sure about the UK, but you have wet roads and high speeds there, right?

@FaheemMitha Cleaning them really shouldn't be :P

As I recall, the motorways top out at 80 mph. Though it doesn't seem that fast, because the UK has pretty good, wide roads.

Wet roads... often yes. High speeds? Wouldn't say so

@bertieb Oh, is that what you were doing?

Ah, 70mph

11:57 AM
@bertieb 80 mph seems pretty fast to me.

And we're pretty good road safety wise

@bertieb Ok. I recall 80, but I could be mistaken.

Sweden is above us but that's about it IIRC

@bertieb Yes, I'm sure you are.

@FaheemMitha Cleaning the chain- had it running in first on the centre stand. Rag (and hand) got caught and took my fingers in between the chain and sprocket, engine stalled, leaving fingers trapped there. Could've been much worse.

11:58 AM
@bertieb You had the chain running while you were cleaning it? Is that necessary?
I supppose to keep it moving along?

It is neither necessary nor recommended
But it is, uh, expedient
And I wanted to get the bike cleaned before the sun set etc
So: oops

@bertieb Indeed.
Anyway, sorry to hear that. Sounds quite awful. And incapacitating.
I find motor-bikes quite stress-making. I stay away from them, personally.
Unfortunately they're really popular over here, and they're kind of a traffic menace.
Because the people who ride them don't have a clue about traffic safety or manners.

@FaheemMitha Thanks, it's not the best but fortunately everything is there and will hopefully recover over the next few month[s]

@bertieb I hope so.
I'm impressed that you are able to type.

Still have 8 other fingers, but thanks :D

12:14 PM
Some fingers are more important than others.
I'm a pretty crap typist. Don't use all the fingers I should be using.
I see your ghastly Royal Family is having a big day today. (No offense, if you happen to actually like them. Some do, apparently.)
Or, possibly, offense. :-)

12:50 PM
I do like them, as it happens
But to each their own
At least the couple looked happy

@bertieb Nothing personal. But it's hard to watch walking, talking symbols of inequality.
For me, at least.
In a world where many (most?) people don't know where their next meal is coming from.
Of course, I'm not British.

Fair enough, there are certainly plenty of such symbols about

True. Some more visible than others.

Well, kinda true of much of the political class

Most of them don't take rides through the center on London in a carriage, watched by billions of people. I realise the world is full of inequality. But you don't have to celebrate it.

1:04 PM
@FaheemMitha Its good for the economy

@JourneymanGeek Pull the other one, it's got bells on.

No, seriously
people who come in to watch will spend money

It's like I was reading a magazine called India Today which had lengthy lists of all the richest and most successful Indians. Ugh.

they'll buy food and drink! Souvinier Plates!

@JourneymanGeek And if they weren't watching, they would be doing something else.
And possibly spending their money on something else. Maybe something they actually need.
Capitalism: it's good to spend your money. Even if it's on things you don't need and don't really want. Because... It's Good for the Economy. Yay.

1:07 PM
@FaheemMitha Well true. But if you look at it that way, the industry this site supports is a lot of the worst of capitalism.
;p

@JourneymanGeek a lot of the worst? Sorry, you lost me.

good morning

@FaheemMitha well, programmers
You can't eat code. People spend millions of dollars, or even billions on intangible things

@JourneymanGeek I don't follow. You're saying programmers are capitalists?

many companies are very toxic environments.

1:08 PM
@JourneymanGeek Indirectly, yes.

@FaheemMitha yup

@JourneymanGeek I'm sure they are.

They could be doing something else
I donno, farming, or nerf herding.

Unfortunately, little of that money goes to free software.

See, the value of the british monarchy is in the story
People see them and go "Dang, we were something once! Best Empire there was!"

1:09 PM
@JourneymanGeek I thought that Russell Brand made the case quite well - he's got a couple of videos about it.
People don't take him seriously, because he comes across as wacky. But I think he's fundamentally quite smart.

@FaheemMitha Funny thing is I think republicans are silly, since monarchs are harmless heads of state.
sure, they cost a lot to care and feed but they're often hard to corrupt (though their families often less so!) and save a little on needing to elect them every so often

@JourneymanGeek Yes, let's be proud of the giant, mass-murdering, thieving, criminal organization that our ancestors were part of. Flag waving time!

err
Are we still sore over that fake empire? ;p

@JourneymanGeek I don't think they are that harmless.

@FaheemMitha they got better!
@FaheemMitha why?

1:12 PM
@JourneymanGeek Who, me? Just stating facts.
@JourneymanGeek Why what? Why don't I think they are harmless?

(note "fake empire")

@FaheemMitha agreed

Because they are a living symbol of a very ugly past. Which is some aspects still persists in the present.
Brand said similar things in his videos. I thought he made the case quite well. Of course, he's British. I'm not.

(also, ... I don't even know who is getting married so clearly I care even less than you lot about an infusion of fresh genes into the european royal family thricket)

The way I think of it, it's like an anchor. It's something to point to.
@JourneymanGeek Someone posted a link, or I wouldn't know either.
In ELU Chat.

1:14 PM
ELU chat ;p
granted, I just discovered a few minutes before they just chucked 3 newbies on duty by accident and we got no more experienced guy if all hell breaks loose.

@JourneymanGeek Context?

@JourneymanGeek Ah.
On a weekend?

yup
it would be ok but I forgot my drive with stuff to do
But I got youtube and unlimited weekend data soooo

Hmm, do they work you hard in SG, or is it just your schedule?

1:18 PM
current schedule
actually not that bad
I work 12 hour shifts, 2+2 or 3 days in a week
anyway, not really planning to stay here long. At most, when my contract ends in 11 months

@JourneymanGeek I see.
