12:03 AM
i feel blergh

Could be early 2000s but in any case, quite old.

Bob
12:25 AM
@allquixotic have you heard of gVisor?

12:36 AM
quick question - is there any value in pinning notable MSE posts here?
On one hand, its on the sidebar. On the other, we discuss these things here too

4x GTX480 SLI, would you bother?

0_0
practially? No
but sounds like a nice way to warm your room fun

Bob
@JourneymanGeek Yea, it's good to keep up to date.
@MichaelFrank all the performance of a GTX 1080, for only 1000% the power consumption? :P

12:52 AM
Nice way to generate heat ;p

1:06 AM
@TMLCat I want kittens. You now have to provide me with kittens.

Anyone else been getting malformed hello warnings when attempting to access YouTube recently?

1:25 AM
Trying to decide if I should bother with answering this question. In order for me to answer that question, I would have to install VS2017 and the extension, then specifically export the keys, in order to recreate the author's situation. Even if I did all that and wrote the script, the user, indicate they don't want to use any solution dealing with the registry. Should I even bother?

hmm
no? ;p

Even if I do answer it, I probably won't even get an accept....go figure

@JourneymanGeek On at least 3 different machines on different networks, I have been getting a malformed hello error in Firefox the first time I visit YT that day...

Interesting. The one question of the author, that I answered, he didn't accept the answer. It's the only one. Answers my question...

I mean, more that you're asking that question ;p
I mean, if you reeeeealllly wanted to know how to do it, or it would be fun, go ahead

1:35 AM
@Bob no

@MichaelFrank A single GTX 1070 will outperform four GTX 480s combined while consuming just 15% of the power.
Not even the 1080. 1070.

@bwDraco Ha.
I was just looking at one of the shipments that came in for disposal and noticed beefy looking case. Checked out the insides and it's an i7 970 w/ 4xSLI GTX480s in it.

quad 980 Ti is probably the last gen that supported 4-way SLI, isn't it?

@MichaelFrank are you allowed to "dispose" of it into the boot of your car?

quad 980 Ti on SLI-friendly games is probably one of the fastest setups even in the world of the Titan V
especially on DX11 games

1:38 AM
@Burgi It won't fit. :|

backseat?

I already know "how to do it" but I can't confirm my script works without installing VS2017 which is a pain

@MichaelFrank or the closest equivilent
I once carried a full sized case in a bus....
oh oh

wait... Let me go and take a picture...

and a pair of 2u rackmounts, though the megabus driver threw a fit

1:39 AM
of your car?

Bob
@bwDraco you sure? joking aside, a 480 benchmarks around 1/3rd of a 1080...

man, Steam's download servers suuuuuuuuuuck

if you have a smart car i'll let you off

I'm getting 11 Mbps -> download stopped -> 7 Mbps -> stopped -> 20 Mbps -> stopped -> 2 Mbps -> stopped constantly

Bob
@allquixotic it looks interesting. containers (docker...) but with a mini-hypervisor

1:39 AM
and speedtesting at 850 Mbps

SLI scaling falls off a cliff past two cards.

Bob
@bwDraco assuming compute, not gaming?
@allquixotic pick a different download server :P

Yes, gaming.

Bob
sometimes I switch over to the Melbourne server for faster downloads

Bob
1:41 AM
@allquixotic so gVisor intercepts syscalls like user-mode linux, but without any hardware emulation like full virt

@Bob huh. UML-ish

Bob
@allquixotic yea, that's how they described it

And SLI itself is dying. Although Pascal GP102 and GP104 cards support 2-way SLI HB, there are few modern games that support SLI in any way, shape, or form. Assassin's Creed Origins and Final Fantasy XV don't support it.

looks like it has an isolation layer that uses KVM and VT-x for network I/O

There we go

1:44 AM
ah
that's a big case

still...

Yea, I said it as a big case.

how small is your car?

@MichaelFrank were these work machines?!

Dimensions?

1:45 AM
I mean if you're allowed to dispose of it though, totally would fit in a car boot

Can you identify what model case this is?

I think that were barely fit in my dad's other car and that thing is a shoebox

@allquixotic They're from a Uni. I think they were probably render farms?

it looks like the same size as my case

!!tell 44677295 caaaaaaat2

@bwDraco Probably, let me check...
@Burgi It's a Prius C.

oh dude, it'll fit

@Burgi TWSS!

drop the seats

just to be a wet blanket here...
is it ok to do that tho? ;p

1:48 AM
@JourneymanGeek TWSS!

@JourneymanGeek i was just about to ask
also...
11 mins ago, by Burgi
@MichaelFrank are you allowed to "dispose" of it into the boot of your car?

I mean, we're all geeks. And I love a spot of dumpster diving as much as the next dog....

@bwDraco Naw, it's not that case. I'll got and take a better look.

@bwDraco he has child seats and things in the car...

Let me check again...
...okay, it's an Armor+ MX.

1:50 AM
Here we go, Thermaltake Armor+
oh yea, your one looks more like it.

@MichaelFrank TWSS!

535x240x490mm. This is not larger than Astaroth (Corsair 760T, 568x246x564mm).

@TMLCat I don't know what you're saying. :(
@bwDraco It's not about the size... ;)

The Armor+ MX is IMO too small for quad-SLI.

Although in your case, you have size AND performance...

1:53 AM
@MichaelFrank so back to the original question... are you allowed to dispose of it off site in about 3 years time?

@Burgi why 3 years?

Anyone else angry that all the 2018 IPS 4k monitors are delayed due to the fact they all use the same bloody panel?

But it does support a side intake fan, a feature that's not common on modern setups.

@MichaelFrank thats how long i go between upgrades

@Ramhound not yet ;p

1:54 AM
are you allowed to nick it, yes/no?

I'm not on the market for now anyway
@MichaelFrank totally TWSS
@Burgi this is an important question

Bob
@JourneymanGeek that's possibly more of a TWHS

@JourneymanGeek What is TW- Oh.
I see.

.... really?
That's what she said.

Looking at 4k 60Hz panels but I want DP 1.4 and HDMI 2.0b ports but the current panels don't have that configuration. But next generation panels are 120 Hz+ and have those ports.
SO I am annoyed

1:56 AM
@JourneymanGeek Yes, I get it now. :<

n00b

@Ramhound I had the reverse issue when I got my 4k panels
very few machines did HDMI 2.0, and my specific release of monitor did not, but newer ones did.

I will find out if it is truly for disposal, and attempt to infiltrate my on house with it, without attracting the ire and destructive capability of my wife.

Well I am more worried about my 1180 build then my current configuration.

1:57 AM
@MichaelFrank does she not get it?

@MichaelFrank ah...

Even then I doubt even the 1180 will do 4k 120 Hz+ but I want really good monitors ;-)

cause WAF is important man

@JourneymanGeek I could probably say... "SURPRISE! You can game on this one!"

my GF accepts and encourages the fact she knows where i am if i'm gaming.....

1:58 AM
Guys
I have an exam right now

@Burgi well that's something i tacitly hope future mrs geek gets ;p
@rahuldottech like right now?

It's not an important exam at all

@rahuldottech You should put your phone away.

you might get kicked out for cheating :(

Just a small school test. But I'm pretty sure I'm going to do really crappy

1:59 AM
(speaking of which, the first two people we talked to are out... :( )

@rahuldottech You certainly will if you don't put your phone away.

so starting again

Shoo!

@JourneymanGeek it's in 20 minutes

riggght

2:00 AM
Ehehhehe

./me kick-mutes rahuldotcheat
2

The only reason you are going to do "really crappy" is if you keep talking to us while your taking an exam that is important enough to take.
2

Hey! Come on

kick him!

The exam hasn't even started yet

2:00 AM
Do it!

Bye.
I hate you

god. its like we're his parents or something.

lol :)

(-_-)

2:01 AM
lol

basically me gaming means i'm not out cavorting with ladies of the night and other ne'erdowells

hah
speaking of which

I don't get to cavort with ladies
(or men)

or cats?

or cavort at all
cat's don't cavort.
they sit, and stare.

2:04 AM
This VM on this mechanical disk is killing me
lol

Today's case designs are less gaudy. Instead, they often aim to showcase what's inside while providing better airflow. RGB lighting and liquid cooling are more common these days.

Yea, the glossy case panels are awful looking IMHO.

is a $400 case that has about 4 RGB fans overkill?
(no idea why i want that bugger)

two words
free computer

2:07 AM
@Ramhound cause its shiny

If you're looking at super-tower cases with RGB everywhere and the ability to hold two systems, a good place to start is the new Corsair Obsidian 1000D.

I saw that

that said

I like the view 91 because it fully comes apart

if I build another new PC soon, (and I decide in 2-3 months) I'll probably go for a HAF XB evo

2:07 AM
1000D would be great if I actually was going build 2 pcs in it

@bwDraco ...two systems?!

That kind of case... is overkill. I went with the 760T because I wanted big, but not too big.
@MichaelFrank EATX + mITX.

Ahh, I see. Designed for multi-system streaming setups.

I love my 600T but... its slightly overkill

Anyone have a DXRacer chair?

2:09 AM
Big because I was building around an EATX board and wanted to have good airflow as well as room to grow, but not so big as to get in the way.
It's not tempered glass, but I don't like the fragility of glass.

@Ramhound I have cheap alternative...
Does that count?

lol

Bob
@Ramhound I don't understand your comment here superuser.com/questions/1323758/…
the question looks like a pretty specific problem?

He used multiple windows tags.

@MichaelFrank the wheelie office chair doesn't count

2:14 AM
Should I just delete it and retract the close vote?

@Burgi No, it's a racing chair styled seat.
It just cost me $160 from an Office supply store.

I kinda want a secret labs.

Bob
@Ramhound eh, that's not really a problem

since they're local, and I can't afford an aeon ;)

Bob
if he used windows-7 and windows-10 I'd find that dodgy
but windows-10 and windows-10-v1703 is a decent way to localise the problem (to 1703) while leaving it broadly tagged (windows-10) for the bigger audience

2:16 AM
yup

Bob
in a "just in case it's not 1703-specific" way

Alright. I will just delete the comment and retract the close vote.

Bob
windows is a bit of a special case here because it's so big
same goes for co-using, say, linux and ubuntu tags

So what is considered an "accessory" on a chair? The wheels?

hmm
some chairs have optional arm, back rests, lumbar cushions, wheel options

2:22 AM
Lifetime warranty on frame. But weight limit is a concern, metal frame, current chair has lasted (besides the cushion). hmm

Xbox Adaptive Controller first look: A new, necessary gamepad https://engt.co/2wNFqN9 https://t.co/1P2eYuI0wK
@Burgi Might be useful for you while your fingers heal...

you mean @bertieb

Yes.
I did.

actually

Microsoft sure takes accessibility seriously.

2:25 AM
there's another cool feature
every. single. button. is mapped out to a 3.5mm socket

Yup
Terry Crews could game with just his muscle twitches...

or you can use that as the basis for a custom controller
say for an arcade cabinet or such, with a much much lower barrier to entry
I mean, sure you could use a arduino

Bob
huh, I broke 40k at some point

Good job

I wonder if it would stack up against arcade sticks for the competitive gaming scene.

2:36 AM
@Bob these things happen ;p

Ave
@MichaelFrank probably not.
I'm only going to be talking about TGM1 community but well, this won't cut it for them

3:03 AM
"The first is the promise of seamless compatibility with the newer Microsoft Office formats" - I don't believe that any office suite is seamless with Office formats except Office. There are far to many features of the format that are not documented for that to happen.
Although I must say SoftMaker FreeOffice 2018 looks exactly like Office :-)
The upgrade to 1803 on this VM created a random user
Just W.O.N.D.E.R.F.U.L

Looks like user selection was just not working correctly for some reason
Too tired to finish patching it :$

Covering up both sides of a high-power case fan makes it spin fastee because the blades are not moving air anymore. I love how my high-speed Delta fan can run in excess of 7,000 RPM when covered up while consuming much less power :p
Obviously, it's not actually useful when it's not moving air, but just how fast will the thing run in vacuum at the max 12.8V input? :p
Durinf the experiments, the fan measured almost 90 dBA at these speeds, and it sounded like the bearing wasn't built to handle these sorts of speeds. It was designed for 5,200 RPM, not 8,000 RPM.

Ave
one of my partners does competitive overclocking and uh, she told me earlier that you can usually go around ~15V on delta fans (for not too long amounts of time ofc) without irreversibly damaging them
so yeah, I wonder how high you can go on those.

.... yanno, I know exactly where I can find 35v fans the size of a dinner plate....

A fan doing 85 dBA is pretty alarming FWIW.

Ave
3:29 AM
dear god that's expensive

.... what's that sign?

Ave
turkish lira

Turkish lira.
US$28.21 from Newegg. This thing is not cheap.
I have another mostly unused one. The one I normally use is being used mainly for ventilation purposes and not inside a PC.

Ave
that's around 3x more than that I'd expect to pay for a regular fan
and by regular fan I mean something that isn't like RGB or smth

Heck, Noctua fans can run upwards of $20 a pop.

Ave
3:33 AM
(one of my partners has LL120RGBs on her case and they. are. gorgeous.)

(the NF-A14 PWM is $21.75, and the next-generation NF-A12x25 with Sterrox LCP impeller is $29.90)

3:47 AM
that's a little large, expensive, and you have a small risk of FOD damage.
and by small I mean... your PC will be in small pieces

Bob
4:01 AM
@bwDraco about 0 RPM sustained

Why "about" or "approximately" in this context?
Feb 24 '17 at 2:31, by Bob
Given that I currently have approximately zero access?
Mar 27 '15 at 3:13, by Bob
XP has approximately zero support for GPT

Bob
@bwDraco A fan doing 85 dBA isn't too far off your typical DC :P

Feb 19 at 3:55, by Bob
I'd guess approximately none

cause we're pedants, and impresision makes us feel better ;)

Bob
@bwDraco cause it's a joke. about 0 RPM when your coil burns out from lack of cooling

4:05 AM
The stator isn't exactly cooled during normal operation FWIW. It's inside the motor hub.
Hmm...
No air means no convection cooling.
Even if there's very little fan-driven airflow inside the motor hub, convection is still possible in atmosphere. This won't happen in vacuum.

4:18 AM
Hey. Not sure if I've mentioned this before, but did you know that I hate y'all?
Test went ok, btw. Thanks for asking.

@rahuldottech You're grounded. Go to your room. Or something something.

@JourneymanGeek -.-
I'd come for moral support. But you guys made me laugh. Which works too, I guess...

We aim to please. Or sometimes we aim badly.

Q: Will an SSL certificate prevent cPanel hacks?

Philip SheardThe cPanel on my website is being hacked, and I am not sure that the setup my host provides is totally secure. The hack works by intercepting my login. Will an SSL certificate prevent this? If it will, then it would be a lot cheaper than either the host or myself trying to fix a security bug.

I want to cry.

Ave
4:33 AM
rubs temples
that's not have it works

@Bob looks like gvisor is a project they spent considerable effort on internally before going open source; commit #2 contains many thousands of lines of Go
(commit 1 just established the repo)

4:51 AM
@Bob @Ave some people just shouldn't run servers?

Ave
I won't say that bc I don't want to sound like an elitist but... maybe

some people, like myself also shouldn't perform surgery ;p
or fly aircraft

Bob
"These people publish mugshots and extort for their removal. Here's theirs!"
@JourneymanGeek "Other starboard!"

Precisely!

Ave
today in aveland, ave finds out that just running KMS requires a key by itself.

5:17 AM
lol
only if you want to do it legally trollface
makes sense though, since you don't want random people running a key server at home
I'm sure in a future iteration they'll have an option for a MS login/account for it
azure kms!
and tie that in with azure AD, azure DNS, azure first borns...

Ave
@JourneymanGeek I mean that's literally what I want

lol
oh those sort of things exist.

Ave
yup, azure AD and azure DNS exists
dunno about azure first borns tho

soon
heh, wait what?
@Ave twitter DM

Ave
hm?

Bob
5:31 AM
@Ave and only works with, IIRC, 20 clients minimum

Ave

Bob
like, nothing activates until you have 20 clients registered on it

@MichaelFrank TWSSS

Ave
@Bob hm. TIL.

Ah fuck I'm fucked again.

5:33 AM
if I can iture out how to make it work

Bob
> To qualify for KMS activation, there must be a minimum number of qualifying computers (called the activation threshold). KMS clients will be activated only after this threshold has been met.
> computers running Windows 10, like other client operating system versions, must receive an activation count of 25 or more
so you need at least 25 clients trying to activate at once before any of them go through

Ave
I fail to see why that's even a thing

@Ave I'd DM you if I could figure out why your name isn't turning up ;p

Bob
There's certain ... tools ... that may or may not exist that people may or may not use to bypass those restrictions. Said tools are, of course, against licensing agreements.

Ave
5:35 AM
I DM'd you

Bob
@Ave Deters home use? idk

Ave
and why would they not want that?

cause they want home users to pay retail?

Bob
@Ave I think beyond that point KMS will basically blindly activate without contacting MS servers.

cause who would have 20 pcs at home

Bob
5:37 AM
It's a loophole for "free" (read: illegal) Windows
For legitimate VL users who have <25 clients, the supported way is with a MAK key.

@Bob though many legit kms servers might be badly configured and open or those same illegal tools could emulate licences...

Ave
problem is I have a bunch of MAK and VL keys

And I think that in the US, you have to have an EIN (business tax ID) to get Software Assurance and therefore Volume Licensing...

Bob
@Ave how is that a problem? :P

5:41 AM
I've blacked out again and ended up somewhere with shit set up some way I have no idea how it became this way but at least its not lube everywhere this time but something I set up because I wanted to help someone. But probably failed miserably at because well, I did that thing again when wwwll dbfusndfuck efufk grksnalfnf eidbsjsjslf rjeidsusksncnsksm sod eosnfkelwdndnw

Bob
@Ave If you have a KMS host key and don't need to support Win7 clients, you can use AD-based activation. No threshold requirement. See blogs.technet.microsoft.com/askpfeplat/2013/02/04/… and comments

Or otherwise not offer Software Assurance to individuals not managing PCs on behalf of a business.

Ave
I'll consider that

Bob
@TMLCat ...please stop doing this to yourself :(

@TMLCat Please see a doctor. We care about your health.

5:46 AM
@TMLCat dude if this keeps happening you really need to get help

Is there some form of outreach we can provide?
I would hate to see something bad happen to an established member of our community.

@JourneymanGeek actually I saw my shrink today and talked a lot about some of this shit.

@TMLCat blackouts... are probably a little bit more of the body than the spirit/mind/nonsquishybits

@TMLCat This is not merely a psychological issue. This is a general medical condition which requires physician attention.

But rather that's beside the point. I'm.... Taking a week off drugs as of today, in order to figure some shit out but the problem is the solution I have for helping out a friend of mine who has some issues somewhat relies on me being fucked off my head on drugs. Which is kinda a clusterfuck.

5:49 AM
eh. If you can't keep yourself straight, how will your help your friend?
there's gotta be other ways.
ok, dude. I know you're not quite right, but that's not an excuse to start using language like that.

Yes yes yes, I need to be somewhere other than here.
Hold on I'll close my browser

in The Side Channel, 4 hours ago, by bwDraco
Please keep the language clean. We want this place to be safe for work. The occasional expletive is okay, but please don't just use profanity for its own sake.
@TMLCat, ultimately, we care about your well-being. Please see a doctor as soon as you can.

Sorry about that. I do realise this is a hard time
