2:02 PM
@FaheemMitha agreed too

2:34 PM
> The IO operation at logical block address 0x34968c98 for Disk 0 (PDO name: \Device\0000003d) was retried.
is this an indication that the hard disk is dying
tons of such events
and windows update failed because of this
like 100s of such events

@JourneymanGeek The tenet of capitalism isn't spending money on intangible things. It's the exploitation of the work of others.
Other people work, using the infrastructure owned by the "Capitalist", who gets the big money.
Uber is capitalism on steroids. People drive and Uber gets rich. No worker's rights, no salaries, nothing.

hey but surge pricing is totally fair

@ThatBrazilianGuy this

that

these

2:50 PM
@Sathya looks like a bad sector
run a smart test or hdd diagnostics?

smart says ok
running chkdsk /R now

@JourneymanGeek What's "2+2"?
Don't say "4".

@ThatBrazilianGuy basically the week is in 3 chunks
mon-tue wed-fri sat-sun
so you either work mon-tue and sat-sun on morning and pm shifts (or the other way around) or one 3 day 12 hour shift

Ave
@ThatBrazilianGuy server changes etc

@Sathya then... that's odd
@ThatBrazilianGuy so 2+2 is 2 day and 2 night shifts in a week

2:56 PM
it's not the first time.. timeouts been happening since quite some @jou
hence my inclination towards hdd dying

@Sathya eh, I'd not be inclined to trust the drive then

or troublesome area of hdd

sometimes you got to trust what you see
You have backups right?

it's my stash the program installs drive
like steam downloads etc
so nothing serious
yep got backups

ah
kinda odd that would make windows update fail

3:06 PM
@JourneymanGeek the windows update failed because on reboot of the update it started scanning the disk and the disk went unresponsive, so I had to reset the system manually
btw, @jou remember my system not turning on, changed the PSU, still problem's there
On cold boot, let it run for like an hour and then do a rapid power off + power on, it POSTs fine
am guessing to some bad caps in motherboard.

@ThatBrazilianGuy Nice one line summary of capitalism.
@ThatBrazilianGuy I'd say, rather, a new variant/form of capitalism for the "knowledge economy".
In which the "capitalist" doesn't even own anything.
And similarly for Airbnb.

Yeah, and also "online markets" for freelancers...

ahh odd

@ThatBrazilianGuy Like Upwork?

3:32 PM
@FaheemMitha that, and freelancer.com, wedologos, etc etc

@ThatBrazilianGuy I don't know those, but ok.

1 hour later…
Bob
4:34 PM
hi
is @Sathya back? :O

1 hour later…
5:38 PM
@Bob :waves:

Ave
hmm

@Ave sup

Ave
hi!
you should really try to get ~100 more rep

I think the interest rep will cover that

6:07 PM
@ThatBrazilianGuy Approx. 54-60k per year. "Hacking Windows" as in understanding how to fsck the registry to do our bidding... Such as joining a Windows 10 Pro machine to an NT4-style domain

6:20 PM
YOLO.

hey it's the CEO of Mitrosoft!

Question: Have you found loose screws or bolts on office/work chairs?
More specifically, how often do you run into screws loosening over time on office chairs?

Me? Never on an office one... On a home one, yea... Just tightened it up again, never dealt with it again

The documentation for my new chair says tighten every month, but that seems overkill to me. (FWIW the critical base screws which hold the chair seat to the legs have been tightened using an impact driver, beyond what the supplied Allen wrench would permit, so they should never really come apart.)

@bwDraco what chair?

6:34 PM
The problem is, I only have an SAE socket set and those bolts are 12mm metric, so I would up rounding them slightly.
The damage is limited; a matching 12mm socket should still be able to apply full torque.

Herman Miller Aeron chairs ship fully assembled which is awesome... it got delivered while I was working from home, 15 minutes before a meeting I had to dial into, so I cut the box open, threw it in the recycle bin, and carried it upstairs fully assembled, and it was in my room before it was time to dial into the meeting :D

Not expensive stuff, and I can't see adequate justification for an Aeron.

that's because you haven't sat in one :P

It's not their cheapest chair, though; I know there are much worse ones out there.

I asked about this before, but any thoughts or comments about sound recorders? Particularly easily concealed ones.
I realise this is perhaps not the optimal place to be asking this.

6:37 PM
@FaheemMitha Is there a specific application you need them for?

@bwDraco Recording phone conversations and in person human conversations. In most cases, without the other person knowing. I'm trying to deal with some bad people. Recording stuff might provide evidence.

@allquixotic I did think about getting an Aeron before, but my parents would not like it:
Jul 9 '17 at 4:18, by bwDraco
(but I seriously doubt we're willing to spend nearly $1000 on the office chair alone, or several thousand dollars on a fully-custom setup)

Aargh, I got a Clippy popup.
@bwDraco Thank you for asking.

@FaheemMitha Feel free to delete it if you don't want it to be visible.

@bwDraco Really not necessary. But thanks for the suggestion.
Just looking for thoughts/feedback re possible hardware.
Bearing in mind I'm limited to what is available in India. Possibly effectively what is on Amazon India.
There is something called Flipkart, but I've not found it that great.

6:42 PM
I'd want to point you to Olympus for good voice recorders.
I have an old WS-710M; the sound quality is excellent at higher bitrates.

@bwDraco Is that a shop or a brand?

Brand.

The same Olympus that makes digital cameras.

@bwDraco yes, I've heard of those.

6:43 PM
(originally used mine to record class lectures)

I was looking at Zoom on Amazon India. They seem quite popular.
E.g. the H1N.

@allquixotic, FWIW, it replaced an old, cheap fabric chair which isn't really comfortable to sit in for extended periods of time.
Or even short periods of time.
Obviously, this is far from perfect (and yes, I did evaluate getting an Aeron), but it's pretty comfortable to sit in for hours at a time.

2 hours later…
@allquixotic Autoplay video AAAAARGH.
When I want video to autoplay (Youtube playlists) it doesn't. When I don't want it to (news articles), it does! GAAAH!

heh
@bwDraco comfy chairs are important
I miss my old work aeon :(
I currently have a ikea one of some sort.
the ones at current work... are terribad

@ThatBrazilianGuy Yes, videos in news articles autoplaying is extremely annoying. Autoplaying anywhere except possibly for an actual video site is just bad manners.

probably will go for one of these next secretlab.sg if I need to buy myself a chair

8:52 PM
+1 for having the right chair
I've had this one since... oh, I dunno, circa 2004?

@bertieb oh, I don't think the ikea ones last more than 3-4 years for me

> “This is something anyone could discover with minimal effort. And the gist of it is I can track most peoples’ cell phone without their consent.”
That's not facepalm-deserving, it's rage-inducing.

I got this one from Makro, if I remember right (wholesalers type place)

@ThatBrazilianGuy so as long as that has existed, basically, the US and Canada have had a free and open, highly accurate, phone number to precise GPS location API that you can use on literally anyone
"Hmm, I wonder where my (boss/lawyer/ex/...) is..."

hah
we use gmaps as a less skeevy version of that in my family

9:01 PM
Can you turn that on full time?

@JourneymanGeek Yeah but it's something you opt in! You can turn it on or off!

yup
hence less skeevy

Google Location used to let you do it differently to how Maps implements it now

my dad has tracking turned on for me and my mom to keep an eye on him

And if you turn off locations services on the phone, the OS "doesn't know" where you are

9:02 PM
(he had a heart bypass and mom freaks out a lot over things)
dad uses it for like "hey, I'm coming to pick you up, just see where I am on your phone"

The "hacked" service uses cell tower triangulation, so it can track phones with GPS turned off and location services disabled. It apparently has everyone's data by default, without opt-in or even consent and the data owners doesn't even know that!!!!!!!!!

or my favourite "Hi! I'm lost in india. Could you give me directions?"

9:26 PM
@JourneymanGeek Hi! I'm lost in india. Could you give me directions?

@FaheemMitha not all those who wander are lost. Just take 4 lefts and there you are.

9:42 PM
@JourneymanGeek Right back where I started from?

@JourneymanGeek So what is a 4D adjustable armrest? Can you send them forwards in time?

@DavidPostill z,y,z and rotation

@FaheemMitha No left back where you started from. OTOH if you took 4 rights then you would be right back where you started from ...

@DavidPostill lol
having taken 4 lefts I probably would be too dizzy to tell

9:50 PM
Of course 4 lefts or 4 rights would actually leave you behind yourself ...
@JourneymanGeek What, no pitch or roll? Cheap chair :)

This is quickly turning into a Time Cube chair... :P
2

10:09 PM
@bertieb every leg has four corners

@allquixotic :P

> When the Sun shines upon Earth, 2 – major Time points are created on opposite sides of Earth – known as Midday and Midnight. Where the 2 major Time forces join, synergy creates 2 new minor Time points we recognize as Sunup and Sundown. The 4-equidistant Time points can be considered as Time Square imprinted upon the circle of Earth.

In a single rotation of the Earth sphere, each Time corner point rotates through the other 3-corner Time points, thus creating 16 corners, 96 hours and 4-simultaneous 24-hour Days within a single rotation of Earth – equated to a Higher Order of Life Time Cube.

10:37 PM
Oh man, Everything2
That takes me back
