@Ave what caught fire?
Ave
Ave
@Bob well I ended up giving up
I needed a build env for a pacman repository on an ubuntu server machine but I'll just set up OBS tomorrow or at some point
rn I'll just repackage the debs
Bob
Bob
@Ave ...o.O
@Ave Wait. So you're on Ubuntu, and want to create a chroot containing Arch?
Ave
Ave
I'm on arch, my server is on Ubuntu
Bob
Bob
Which Ubuntu version is this and can you freely install packages on it?
Ave
Ave
it's 16.04 and yes I can
Bob
Bob
01:02
@Ave I mean the chroot host is Ubuntu?
Ave
Ave
yes
Bob
Bob
I prefer systemd-nspawn over chroot when it comes to that, but there's better ways :P
@Ave apt install lxd
lxd init
lxc launch images:arch containername
lxc exec containername bash
Ave
Ave
hmmm
that makes a lot of sense
just bookmarked that
Bob
Bob
Alternatively, if you want a more up-to-date lxd, apt install snapd; snap install lxd
rest is the same
Ave
Ave
god I hate snap
outside all its issues, the fact that it clutters df list is hell
Bob
Bob
01:05
@Ave snap's fiddly as all hell, but the most recent LXDs come on snap first. they do have ubuntu deb backports though
'course, for your purposes, the old (ollllld) 2.0.x in normal 16.04 repos should work just fine
Ave
Ave
thing is this machine is already being destroyed by all the docker containers in it
Bob
Bob
o.O
well, you could probably run arch as a docker container too..? idk
Ave
Ave
I mean it currently only has 3 docker containers
but I need to spin up one more in a minute
then it has plex, emby, deluge, and a bunch of discord bots
also I love how ptpb claims to be lightweight while it's using up 6% of my cpu even while it's doing nothing
Ave
Ave
02:01
compiling pacman on ubuntu
(at least I have repo-add working now)
03:02
@Ave nice ascii art
why not just use apt though?
Ave
Ave
because I wanted repo-add
Ave
Ave
03:31
so uh
I gave up on that and just wrote a pkgbuild
might just upload that to aur
I read that as "I just woke up and"
Bob
Bob
whoops
I just realised the arch image in lxc/lxd image server is named archlinux (cc @Ave)
so that'd be lxc launch images:archlinux containername
Well. I made a post on Super User for the first time in.... years? Tried to find the answer online, didn't find any good info about it, so thought hey, I know what to do!
@nhinkle a question?
@allquixotic a question/answer pair
I figured it out myself after much googling and messing around
You know, the ol' self-answer cuz apparently nobody's bothered to ask or answer it before
Ave
Ave
03:43
@Bob ah, neat
I'm tempted to upload this to aur now
Bob
Bob
@nhinkle you can't say that without linking it!
@Bob well I didn't want to appear to be trying to just get votes :P
but since you asked...

Q: How can I share my internet connection with other devices in Windows 10?

nhinkleI am staying at a hotel with very poor WiFi connectivity. There is a wired ethernet connection available in the room, but I obviously can't use that with my phone. Is there any way I can share the connection from my Windows 10 laptop to my phone using my laptop's wireless card? This method for Wi...

anyways, i gotta get back to work! see you all later ;)

gOD THE COMPLIANCE FOR AUR IS SO BAD
"you need to include license"
licenses are only in source code
so now i have to download source code (11mb) in addition to the binaries (8mb) and extract licenses (86.9kb) from that
user226528
05:02
Hi. :)
user226528
@Ramhound It would be the first. The build is handed down to "manufacturing" (for the lack of better word). It is RTM. Any change in it would be in the shape of an update. Have you noticed that all previous builds have had a minor build number too? i.e. 16299.31 instead of 16299.0? That's why. This process is called GA (General Availability).
user226528
Windows 10 "feature updates" have always taken two or three months to reach GA on the global scale, at which point, they are distributed to the "Semi-Annual Channel" (formerly CBB).
yeah, once a build is tagged RTM, that's the build - I've had it installed for like a week and a half or so
user226528
@BenN How does their implementation compare?
user226528
05:36
Would the following be eligible for "not an answer" flag? superuser.com/a/1314120/477799
user226528

simple answer: don't talk to them...

@Burgi But that would be commonsensical
user226528
09:23
@JourneymanGeek Hi. Erm, do you speak Mandarin?
user226528
Okay, thanks. It was worth a shot.
Tamil is the other language I speak
user226528
Huh?
user226528
I ... don't know what that is.
09:27
alas. Its probably the second most commonly understood language in this channel after english ;p
user226528
I'd better visit the local university. I can probably find someone who knows Mandarin.
what do you need it for?
user226528
I need to know if there is a word that could be potentially mistranslated into "Orange" instead of "Crane".
ah. that definately needs a native speaker
Bob

online.net isn't allowing me to order a server

Bob

user226528
@Ave How does this "not allowing to order" manifest itself?
user226528
09:38
Error message?
Ave
Ave
can't even downgrade servers fuck online
sorry for harsh wording but I feel like they deserve it on this one
heh
I've been running their servers a while
@Ave downgrade to what?
Ave
Ave
I have a much better machine on scaleway than the one I'm trying to buy on online.net
also "not allowed to order" 0_0
user226528
@Ave And did you contact their support for more information?
Ave
Ave
09:40
online.net one is cheaper and has more storage (which I need), and I want to downgrade to that
@FleetCommand yes, just opened a ticket
user226528
Just? Oh, then I suppose it takes a while for them to respond.
Ave
Ave
I just don't like being denied from making a purchase after paying hundreds of eur to them in fees in the past
user226528
What? You paid them in advance and they are not delivering? That's outrageous.
Ave

no
user226528
No?
Ave
Ave
09:42
I have servers owned by them (well, by their company scaleway), and I had them for years
I also use C14
and I never once had payment issues or anything
just disallowing a long time customer from making a purchase is odd
user226528
Oh, I see.
user226528
You know, maybe the wrong phrase here is "you", not "allowed to order".
user226528
Maybe everyone is experiencing an ordering down time.
user226528
i.e the ordering server is down.

@Ave What does the last row, 'estimated', mean?
Ave
Ave
@RogUE the month isn't complete yet
so it calculates an estimate for the whole month
ah
didn't know that.
user226528
11:55
@MichaelFrank Well, if you think that's expensive, you have to see the Operator font. $179! 😲
@FleetCommand I didn't say expensive. ;)
user226528
@MichaelFrank Sorry. Pinged the wrong person. Ave did.
It is expensive though, and Operator is actually realllllly cool as well.
Ave
Ave
@FleetCommand pragmata pro is 200eur

Hmm... Avery isn't a bad girl's name, now that I am looking for one, although, there was a certain Avery of ill repute in Harry Potter series.
user226528
Still, I am going to name my first daughter Karan. There is no question about it.
Ave

It is probably a derivative of Ava, the female given name. It is intended to have same similarity and differences that "Eva" and "Eve" share.
Ave

it started off as "avery but short"

this one is me...
@FleetCommand I don't know how much I weight now, should go to my old college to check.
user226528
13:04
Why? Your weight is a useless number.
user226528
Focus on what matters more. Like how much you earn.
There's a weighing scale in the lab, probably older than me.
13:17
if you exhale before you are weighed would you weigh less than if you hadn't?
user226528
By a few grams, yes.
user226528
Of course, the weighing scale won't show it. It calculates your weight not your mass.
user226528
But if you submerge yourself in water and calculate the lost mass of water, then yes.
@FleetCommand The weighing scale wouldn't show it because the change is less than the minimum it can measure.
user226528
@RogUE No. Because gases do not contribute to the downforce used to register weight.

user226528
IMHO, a computer must optimally always work with 100% CPU load.
user226528
Norton Utilities used to trigger alerts about large number of handles too.
user226528
Of course, I never installed that component to save both disk space and the grief.
user226528
Also, as far as I remember, Norton software have been performance hogs.
user226528
13:27
The notion of high performance for utility software was, I think, first introduced by NOD32 and made a de facto requirement by the ill-fated Microsoft OneCare.

@Burgi Hehe. That's posted by apaul - well known for, how can I say, extremist inflammatory viewpoints - and currently suspended. He walks a very fine line and has overstepped this time :)

@FleetCommand Yes they do. How much does a helium filled balloon weigh? Nothing, unless you have the scales attached upside down to the ceiling when it's weight would be registered.
@Burgi Maybe the naked female will come and collect one? ;)

@DavidPostill the naked one is the one has had all night parties

#PETA is a private organization. It is not a government agency. It cannot claim to represent animals, and has no legal basis for doing so.
your point?
So PETA is basically the Lorax for animals?
Jan 11 '17 at 23:54, by bwDraco
Some people think they're duty-bound to do stuff like this. PETA is often hated for being too extremist about it.
@bwDraco At the end of the day, someone has to start, and while they might not be perfect in the way they go about what they do, they're doing something.
21:52
You have a point. Yes, I'd like to see more humane treatment of animals, including animal husbandry practices which avoid suffering. PETA raises awareness of these issues, even if they resort to zealotry in doing so.
I mean, I'm not against animal husbandry in general the way PETA is. What I want to see are practices that aim to avoid or reduce suffering while still efficiently producing food.
(possibly mis-informed views ahead, but) PETA seems to get a bad rap on the tumblrs and twitters
Something something something putting down healthy animals
Something something something provocative (racist? sexist?) activism
Something something something founder is against seeing-eye dogs?
What the fuck.

@dev_willis Hi, I think the particularly important part of that thread surrounds the idea that there are multiple 12v plugs on the motherboard, and that you might not need to use all of them.
I agree that the lights are probably trying to tell you something, but there isn't any information that I could find on the internet about it.
