Bob
12:58 AM
@Ave what caught fire?

Ave
@Bob well I ended up giving up
I needed a build env for a pacman repository on an ubuntu server machine but I'll just set up OBS tomorrow or at some point
rn I'll just repackage the debs

Bob
@Ave ...o.O
@Ave Wait. So you're on Ubuntu, and want to create a chroot containing Arch?

Ave
I'm on arch, my server is on Ubuntu

Bob
Which Ubuntu version is this and can you freely install packages on it?

Ave
it's 16.04 and yes I can

Bob
1:02 AM
@Ave I mean the chroot host is Ubuntu?

Ave
yes

Bob
I prefer systemd-nspawn over chroot when it comes to that, but there's better ways :P
@Ave apt install lxd
lxd init
lxc launch images:arch containername
lxc exec containername bash

Ave
hmmm
that makes a lot of sense
just bookmarked that

Bob
Alternatively, if you want a more up-to-date lxd, apt install snapd; snap install lxd
rest is the same

Ave
god I hate snap
outside all its issues, the fact that it clutters df list is hell

Bob
1:05 AM
@Ave snap's fiddly as all hell, but the most recent LXDs come on snap first. they do have ubuntu deb backports though
'course, for your purposes, the old (ollllld) 2.0.x in normal 16.04 repos should work just fine

Ave
thing is this machine is already being destroyed by all the docker containers in it

Bob
o.O
well, you could probably run arch as a docker container too..? idk

Ave
I mean it currently only has 3 docker containers
but I need to spin up one more in a minute
then it has plex, emby, deluge, and a bunch of discord bots
also I love how ptpb claims to be lightweight while it's using up 6% of my cpu even while it's doing nothing

Ave
2:01 AM
compiling pacman on ubuntu
(at least I have repo-add working now)

3:02 AM
@Ave nice ascii art
why not just use apt though?

Ave
because I wanted repo-add

Ave
3:31 AM
so uh
I gave up on that and just wrote a pkgbuild
might just upload that to aur

I read that as "I just woke up and"

Bob
whoops
I just realised the arch image in lxc/lxd image server is named archlinux (cc @Ave)
so that'd be lxc launch images:archlinux containername

Well. I made a post on Super User for the first time in.... years? Tried to find the answer online, didn't find any good info about it, so thought hey, I know what to do!

@nhinkle a question?

@allquixotic a question/answer pair
I figured it out myself after much googling and messing around
You know, the ol' self-answer cuz apparently nobody's bothered to ask or answer it before

Ave
3:43 AM
@Bob ah, neat
I'm tempted to upload this to aur now

Bob
@nhinkle you can't say that without linking it!

@Bob well I didn't want to appear to be trying to just get votes :P
but since you asked...

Q: How can I share my internet connection with other devices in Windows 10?

nhinkleI am staying at a hotel with very poor WiFi connectivity. There is a wired ethernet connection available in the room, but I obviously can't use that with my phone. Is there any way I can share the connection from my Windows 10 laptop to my phone using my laptop's wireless card? This method for Wi...

anyways, i gotta get back to work! see you all later ;)

Ave
4:44 AM
gOD THE COMPLIANCE FOR AUR IS SO BAD
"you need to include license"
licenses are only in source code
so now i have to download source code (11mb) in addition to the binaries (8mb) and extract licenses (86.9kb) from that

user226528
5:02 AM
Hi. :)

user226528
@Ramhound It would be the first. The build is handed down to "manufacturing" (for the lack of better word). It is RTM. Any change in it would be in the shape of an update. Have you noticed that all previous builds have had a minor build number too? i.e. 16299.31 instead of 16299.0? That's why. This process is called GA (General Availability).

user226528
Windows 10 "feature updates" have always taken two or three months to reach GA on the global scale, at which point, they are distributed to the "Semi-Annual Channel" (formerly CBB).

yeah, once a build is tagged RTM, that's the build - I've had it installed for like a week and a half or so

user226528
@BenN How does their implementation compare?

user226528
5:36 AM
Would the following be eligible for "not an answer" flag? superuser.com/a/1314120/477799

user226528
The text itself says "this is not an answer".

5:57 AM
o/ Morning

2 hours later…

Q: Politely refusing to validate veiled bigotry

apaulIt may be my perception, but it seems that bigots have taken to reframing their bigotry as arguments about other supposedly more polite/civil subjects. Rather than talking about subjects like race they talk about "political correctness" and "free speech" Rather than talking about homophobia, th...

simple answer: don't talk to them...

8:59 AM
@Burgi But that would be commonsensical

user226528
9:23 AM
@JourneymanGeek Hi. Erm, do you speak Mandarin?

user226528
Okay, thanks. It was worth a shot.

Tamil is the other language I speak

user226528
Huh?

user226528
I ... don't know what that is.

9:27 AM
alas. Its probably the second most commonly understood language in this channel after english ;p

user226528
I'd better visit the local university. I can probably find someone who knows Mandarin.

what do you need it for?

user226528
I need to know if there is a word that could be potentially mistranslated into "Orange" instead of "Crane".

ah. that definately needs a native speaker

Bob
*pokes head in*

user226528
9:31 AM
Yeah. Google Translate didn't help.

Ave
agh
online.net isn't allowing me to order a server

Bob
bird or machinery?

Ave
and I want to order from online because I am familiar with their service, and I know that their views in certain stuff matches mine (they ignore DMCA)

Bob
spoken or written?
makes a lot of difference

user226528
@Ave How does this "not allowing to order" manifest itself?

user226528
9:38 AM
Error message?

Ave
can't even downgrade servers fuck online
sorry for harsh wording but I feel like they deserve it on this one

heh
I've been running their servers a while
@Ave downgrade to what?

Ave
I have a much better machine on scaleway than the one I'm trying to buy on online.net

also "not allowed to order" 0_0

user226528
@Ave And did you contact their support for more information?

Ave
9:40 AM
online.net one is cheaper and has more storage (which I need), and I want to downgrade to that
@FleetCommand yes, just opened a ticket

user226528
Just? Oh, then I suppose it takes a while for them to respond.

Ave
I just don't like being denied from making a purchase after paying hundreds of eur to them in fees in the past

user226528
What? You paid them in advance and they are not delivering? That's outrageous.

Ave
no

user226528
No?

Ave
9:42 AM
I have servers owned by them (well, by their company scaleway), and I had them for years
I also use C14
and I never once had payment issues or anything
just disallowing a long time customer from making a purchase is odd

user226528
Oh, I see.

user226528
You know, maybe the wrong phrase here is "you", not "allowed to order".

user226528
Maybe everyone is experiencing an ordering down time.

user226528
i.e the ordering server is down.

Ave
nothing
other than the phishing campaign
> Could you please try again ? I did a double check on the security level and it should now work as expected.
that was fast

9:49 AM
:)

user226528
:)

Ave
I should probably check if they care about excessive network traffic or not

user226528
(Chanting...) Check! Check!

Ave
(I only installed vnstat on last day of march btw)

user226528
9:52 AM
That's a lot.

user226528
Also, what font is that?

Ave
pragmata pro
it's expensive
but uh iosevka is close and free

10:40 AM
Wooo! Just wired up a CAT6 cable. Been a while since I done did that.
@Ave That font is quite extensive... o.o

11:11 AM
@Ave What does the last row, 'estimated', mean?

Ave
@RogUE the month isn't complete yet
so it calculates an estimate for the whole month

ah
didn't know that.

user226528
11:55 AM
@MichaelFrank Well, if you think that's expensive, you have to see the Operator font. $179! 😲

@FleetCommand I didn't say expensive. ;)

user226528
@MichaelFrank Sorry. Pinged the wrong person. Ave did.

It is expensive though, and Operator is actually realllllly cool as well.

Ave
@FleetCommand pragmata pro is 200eur

user226528
@Ave If you purchase all its weights for desktop use, yes. But with that condition, Operator is $599.

Ave
12:10 PM
also

user226528
What do they say?

user226528
Hmm... Avery isn't a bad girl's name, now that I am looking for one, although, there was a certain Avery of ill repute in Harry Potter series.

user226528
Still, I am going to name my first daughter Karan. There is no question about it.

Ave
wdym by bad girl

user226528
@Ave I said "isn't a bad girl's name". Stress on "isn't". So, the whole phrase means: "It is a good name for a girl."

Ave
12:18 PM
ah
whatever you do don't do ave
it's a bad name
PEOPLE KEPT PRONOUNCING IT AS A-VE IT'S AYVE GDI

user226528
Hmm... Guilty too.

user226528
Whenever I see you around here, I am reminded of gladiators.

user226528
You know, Ave Imperator! Nos morituri te salutamus.

Ave
I thought of changing my name but I'm too invested in this one
all my profiles and sites are ave, everyone knows me as ave

heh, guilty too ;p
I mentally would read that as ah-veh

user226528
12:30 PM
It is probably a derivative of Ava, the female given name. It is intended to have same similarity and differences that "Eva" and "Eve" share.

Ave
it started off as "avery but short"
then I just dumped avery and went to ave

user226528
Does anyone here experience working with Microsoft Desktop Bridge?

12:45 PM
@Ave thank you. i was mis-pronouncing it in my head ;P

Ave
@Burgi everyone does until I correct them

@Ave Ave as in Rave without the 'R', right?

Ave
yes exactly

woah woah woah

I've been pronouncing it right in my head :)

12:52 PM
pretty certain @ave raves

user226528
Oi!

Ave
I don't even leave the house

HOW DID YOU GET THIS EMAIL ADDRESS

@rahuldottech something to tell us?

Ave
that's cheap.
but it also looks cheap, bet it feels so too.

user226528
12:55 PM
@rahuldottech Clearly spam. Look at the message header.

@Burgi I'm getting lots of weird emails

@Ave are you short? ;p

buying underwear for your many lady friends?

is there a tall avery?

Ave
@JourneymanGeek I'm 5'5"

12:56 PM
ah.
kinda not that short ;p

Ave
nah, I'm short
by average

about aboooot only an inch taller than you ._.

Ave
I'm also really really underweight

heh. I'm kinda fat at the moment

user226528
165 cm?

Ave
12:57 PM
yeah

user226528
I am 20 cm taller.

@JourneymanGeek you are tall for a dog though

In this email, while there are separate underlined pieces of text ("customer care", "privacy policy", "online store), the entire email is actually a hyperlinked image (not even an image map, and no matter where you click, it takes you to the same URL...

@Burgi and by about, I mean my human ;p

12:57 PM
#crappydesign

user226528
@rahuldottech Spam is that way.

user226528
If you click, you receive more.

i'm 5ft 10 ish
179cm

user226528
The link tells the spammer that this email address is alive and being read.

ish

12:59 PM
@Burgi that's good

Ave
I'm 50.1kg

@Ave I used to weigh that much, a year ago.

Ave
I used ti be closer to 60

user226528
And I don't know how much I weigh. Last time I checked I was 45 kg, but that was more than a decade ago.

1:01 PM
And almost same height, 162ish

Ave
I guess not eating much does this

user226528
Over having a hyperactive digestive system.

user226528
Or working hard.

this one is me...

@FleetCommand I don't know how much I weight now, should go to my old college to check.

user226528
1:04 PM
Why? Your weight is a useless number.

user226528
Focus on what matters more. Like how much you earn.

There's a weighing scale in the lab, probably older than me.

1:17 PM
if you exhale before you are weighed would you weigh less than if you hadn't?

user226528
By a few grams, yes.

user226528
Of course, the weighing scale won't show it. It calculates your weight not your mass.

user226528
But if you submerge yourself in water and calculate the lost mass of water, then yes.

@FleetCommand The weighing scale wouldn't show it because the change is less than the minimum it can measure.

user226528
@RogUE No. Because gases do not contribute to the downforce used to register weight.

Bob
1:22 PM

user226528
Yes, Norton software have always been written by the kinds of morons who would show this kind of alerts.

user226528
IMHO, a computer must optimally always work with 100% CPU load.

user226528
Norton Utilities used to trigger alerts about large number of handles too.

user226528
Of course, I never installed that component to save both disk space and the grief.

user226528
Also, as far as I remember, Norton software have been performance hogs.

user226528
1:27 PM
The notion of high performance for utility software was, I think, first introduced by NOD32 and made a de facto requirement by the ill-fated Microsoft OneCare.

did anyone see the tom scott thing on the ISO standard for tea?

Ave
I did

user226528
They want to enforce an ISO standard on tea?

user226528
Or did you watch it during tea time?

Ave
hm?

1:34 PM
anyone here using xfce?

user226528
Bye

How can I get xfce not to distinguish between left and right Win keys?

Ave
it still doesn't work
I'm not connected through scaleway

@FleetCommand nobody wants to enforce it, but people misunderstand what the standard is for.

3 hours later…
4:38 PM
@Ave Can't order more Scaleway instances from a Scaleway instance? Sounds like a rudimentary measure to prevent self replicating botnets thwart Skynet.

@RogUE use xbindkeys to bind them to
. -the same 'command'

4:55 PM
@Ave What's A-VE?

user226528
@Ave His name is Mehdi?

5:17 PM
@Burgi yup

@HackToHell Is it possible an entire article about how great BPF is doesn't once mention what BPF actually is?
Had to google it... Berkeley Packet Filter

5:35 PM
@JourneymanGeek I didn't know it was possible to get maggots in a microwave 0.o
And honestly I don't want to imagine how someone managed it.
Although I do know someone who managed to get roaches on a fridge. Thrice. That I know of.

user226528
Who am I kidding. Probably no one does. So, NVM.

6:28 PM
hmmm adrenaline?

wouldn't that have the opposite effect?

6:44 PM
i dunno

if I could pick a hormone to calm down, I'd go for endorphins/oxytocin. But alas we can't just turn them on. Go exercise really hard or hug someone you really like

@FleetCommand What kind of shock?
Medical shock?
Or "I'm shocked", shock
@djsmiley2k Adrenaline is a thing that can be used FWIW

I thought so

when will my neighbours come for these parcels?
i should have just refused point blank

I take stuff in for my neighbours
Have to go to the sorting/delivery office on Thurs tho as something needs a sig
Might be that power supply dealie for the Odroid which was discussed the other night
Once I have it I could take a photo for QA puposes
If I can figure out a useful, on-topic question to ask... :P

Could do, sure

lol
i think it is female clothing

Even better

O.o

8:45 PM
@Burgi Hehe. That's posted by apaul - well known for, how can I say, extremist inflammatory viewpoints - and currently suspended. He walks a very fine line and has overstepped this time :)

8:56 PM
@FleetCommand Yes they do. How much does a helium filled balloon weigh? Nothing, unless you have the scales attached upside down to the ceiling when it's weight would be registered.
@Burgi Maybe the naked female will come and collect one? ;)

9:10 PM
@DavidPostill the naked one is the one has had all night parties
i just found a note under my door from the neighbours asking for their parcel

@Burgi I know :)

they must have the world's quietest knock

@Burgi I misread that as knockers for a moment ;)

get your mind out of the gutter! ;)

I will when you stop talking about naked neighbours ...

#PETA is a private organization. It is not a government agency. It cannot claim to represent animals, and has no legal basis for doing so.

your point?

So PETA is basically the Lorax for animals?

Jan 11 '17 at 23:54, by bwDraco
Some people think they're duty-bound to do stuff like this. PETA is often hated for being too extremist about it.

@bwDraco At the end of the day, someone has to start, and while they might not be perfect in the way they go about what they do, they're doing something.

9:52 PM
You have a point. Yes, I'd like to see more humane treatment of animals, including animal husbandry practices which avoid suffering. PETA raises awareness of these issues, even if they resort to zealotry in doing so.
I mean, I'm not against animal husbandry in general the way PETA is. What I want to see are practices that aim to avoid or reduce suffering while still efficiently producing food.

(possibly mis-informed views ahead, but) PETA seems to get a bad rap on the tumblrs and twitters
Something something something putting down healthy animals
Something something something provocative (racist? sexist?) activism
Something something something founder is against seeing-eye dogs?

What the fuck.

I wonder how many members of PETA are vegans ...

@DavidPostill I imagine it would be hard to be vegan but also a member of a group that like Eating Tasty Animals!

Q: Where can I find out what the light patterns on my ASRock X399 Taichi motherboard mean?

dev_willisI can't get my computer to boot right now and I'm trying to figure out what the various patterns of blinking and pulsing lights mean. Q: Run an invisible Linux -> VM on laptop

liljoshuSo I have an OS I want to be my system's primary OS, but it's not supported by the hardware; that said, it runs just fine in a VM, and my system supports most desktop flavors of Linux just fine. @FleetCommand yeah why

11:58 PM
@MichaelFrank hi! first, thank you for your help! second, i've read through the thread you linked and tried the things mentioned there but to no avail. how do you suggest i proceed? i feel like the light patterns mean are probably telling me what the problem is if i just knew what they meant. what are your thoughts?

Should this question be rolled back to its original revision, the edits, don’t improve it (the last edit is just noise indicating the device was Dead on Arrival)

Q: Yubikey 4 not working (Linux & Windows)

themoleI received a Yubikey 4 a few days ago. I got it along a special WIRED Magazine offer. The problem with the key is, that it is not recognized neither by Windows 10, nor by Linux (Mint 18). @dev_willis Hi, I think the particularly important part of that thread surrounds the idea that there are multiple 12v plugs on the motherboard, and that you might not need to use all of them.
I agree that the lights are probably trying to tell you something, but there isn't any information that I could find on the internet about it.
