12:00 AM
i tried booting without the atx12v2, which is the 4-pin by the cpu, and i tried booting with only the 24-pin, but no dice

There's also an 8pin atx12v someone as well, right?

yes, i've tried with and without it connected

You are positive the motherboard is fully functional?

it's been working fine since nov

With this same power supply or a different power supply?

12:03 AM
recently the power went out so i shut down the pc and turned off the back-ups. when it came back on i powered everything back on but it wouldn't boot. i figured it was probably the psu so i bought a new one with 200 additional watts and when i went to install i noticed the pc was booting again. don't know what changed. i decided to go ahead and put the new psu in and now neither psu will work

Well, being functional since November doesn't necessarily mean it works now. Can you test either power supply on another board?

not easily. i'll have to see if i can scrounge another board

(The problem with submitting multiple questions surrounding the same topic is you confuse people who read them all), well you thought it was the PSU, but outside of thinking it was the PSU have you used a Power Supply Tester to verify that original power supply was not operational?
Which is something that was suggested to you before.

i don't have one

You need one

12:06 AM
i do have a multimeter

Did you try the paper clip trick?

i didn't. i was kinda afraid to lol
do the mobo lights lighting up not tell the same story as the paper clip trick? it just determines whether the psu is passing power, right?
my understanding of the paper clip trick is that you can plug up a fan and see if it powers it. is that different from being able to power the LEDs?

A verbal description of the lights are not helpful

i could take a video but that doesn't seem like it would help either

I still suspect the motherboard, the fact two sperate PSU, result in no attempt to POST indicates the motherboard is dead.

12:11 AM
the thing that gives me pause tho is the different behavior of the lights between the two PSUs. makes me wonder if i don't have something hooked up correctly but idk what
really wish asrock would make that information available

You provide the board power, plug in the CPU fan, it isn’t difficult (you can’t plug the wrong cable in the wrong location) and you did it right before
Asrock provides a manual for your board. Looked up numerous ASRock boards in the past

yeah, i've got the manual. i'm sure it's all hooked up right. i wonder if maybe a connector is bad? i guess it's probably time to RMA the board, yeah?

12:36 AM
i'm attempting to get support from asrock
thank you all for your help

As I understand it, AMD redid the memory and cache subsystems to significantly reduce latency, allowing the processor to perform noticeably better in memory-intensive tasks.

quite unusual for such a thing to happen, and the window being broken suggests the engine's explosion wasn't 100% contained within the cowling

The embargo on the Ryzen 2000 series desktop chips ends in just two days.
Not major improvements, but by all accounts, the new processors represent a meaningful step forward over the previous generation.

@bwDraco 10% is more than Intel can say for many of their recent chip shots

Yup. Intel's gotten stuck at this point. A completely new architecture is going to have more room for optimization, and AMD has indeed addressed the most serious weaknesses with OG Zen.

I wonder if they bothered to fix Spectre in hardware

3:51 AM
Zen+ is more than just clock frequency improvements.

as well as those other issues that Zen apparently has

@allquixotic Unlikely. AMD says they're going to address it in Zen 2.

the "character assassination" type flaws like Ryzenfall

@allquixotic This can be fixed in AGESA updates for the most part.

Bob
@allquixotic coffee/kaby/sky are all the sme uarch

3:52 AM
Besides, they're not truly serious flaws because an attacker would need to already have admin/root access to the machine to exploit them.

Bob
new uarch is due this year iirc
cannon? ice? idk
@bwDraco as everything, depends on context
when you're looking at rented servers (dedicated), one person will have root and that's perfectly fine. if they can plant firmware-level malware for the next customer...
also raises the same question for the second-hand market

Yeah. Your threat model is going to be a big factor.
On second thought... it seems AMD might have an IPC edge over Intel. This would be a remarkable achievement for them.

wtf
I haven't heard of AMD having an IPC advantage since, like, since I was in high school

12nm is a minor die shrink allowing for slight clock frequency improvements, but that alone certainly does not explain improvements of this magnitude.
Not in every workload, but everywhere I'm looking, they seem to have gained 5-10% IPC over the previous generation, enough to bridge the gap with Coffee Lake when taken together with the frequency improvements.
For the Ryzen 7 2700X, 4.3 GHz is a single-threaded peak clock frequency. Bear in mind that the i7-8700K can boost to 4.3 GHz on all cores, with peak single-core clocks of up to 4.7 GHz.

Bob
@bwDraco link?

4:05 AM
Also, consider that the review by El Chapuzas Informatico referenced by NotebookCheck has the i7-8700K running with a memory frequency advantage (DDR4-3600).

@bwDraco that has no numbers

ha.. last ditch effort! I unsubscribed from email updates to Pinterest, they say it'll take up to 48 hours to process. 2 minutes later, I receive a new email from Pinterest.

@bwDraco ah. I stopped at the big photo
hm. single core perf does look nice

4:32 AM
@Bob did you see my earlier post about a Southwest Airlines emergency landing with 1 fatality and an engine explosion (mostly contained but blew out a window)?
B737-700 built in 2000, CFM56 engine - nice and modern stuff, typically a very safe, conscientious carrier that cares about maintenance
very similar to an incident with the same airline and aircraft type in 2016

How do pilots stay calm when things like this happen?
I wish I was this calm, no matter what happens.

@bwDraco well, here's the thing: their plane wasn't crashing. They had an upset, where something went wrong, but the situation was absolutely recoverable. When they'd apply control inputs (slow down, speed up, change pitch, change roll) the aircraft would respond. At that point, as a pilot, there's no need for panic; you can fly the plane, land, all is well.
I've heard very sad and unfortunate ATC recordings and CVR recordings of flights that were uncontrollable, and these professional trained pilots were freaking the hell out
so if the aircraft is not able to be controlled, it's human nature to basically scream "WE'RE ALL GONNA DIE!!!" - and they do
but as long as you can fly the thing, you focus on that, and everyone lives

@allquixotic lol
But what I hear in most ATC recordings... is awe-inspiring.
From what I've read, you have to be the stoic type to even get through flight school.
Sadly, it's not really in my blood...

well, yeah - you can't lose your cool at the slightest sign that something might be going wrong
you have to diagnose what's wrong and use whatever limited control you have left over the aircraft to try to get it down safely
the only true freak-outs I hear on ATC/CVR is when they try everything and it's no use, the plane is just falling out of the sky
successful emergency landings occur when they have control - that control will calm down a pilot very easily
even if it's not perfect, some control is usually enough to land safely
This airframe, basically identical to the one involved in the SWA emergency landing, safely carried me across the US a couple years ago... m.planespotters.net/airframe/Boeing/737/…

To me, self-control is the holy grail among human skills, and I have long believed that with enough self-control, you can achieve anything.
That's why it matters so much to me.
It's not just in aviation. It's basically everything in life.

@allquixotic fatality? was it from the uncontained engine failure?
oof
that's ... ridiculously unlucky

@DavidPostill Human is not a Helium balloon. Also, what you are talking about is upforce, not downforce. You could have pointed out that an empty Hellium canister weighs more than a full one. But again, a human is no canister either. Also a canister doesn't behave like a balloon.

@Burgi You see this kind of situation in the films a lot. Occasionally, the parcel contains explosives intended to kill the neighbor. (And the neighbor goes on a quest to avenge the killed friend; although I don't it makes you feel any better after getting killed.) Also, sometimes, the parcel contains drugs. DEA pours in and arrests the unsuspecting neighbor while the culprit goes to Miami and enjoys ... whatever people enjoy in Miami.

wasn't SWA the ones that beat up that doctor and threw him off the plane?
> "All the sudden, it felt like we dropped 100 feet," he said.
surely it would be more than that...

8:02 AM
would you know how far tho
10feet, 1000ft, 30000feet///
well, maybe the last one ;D

8:35 AM
you remember when the old dev told everyone we didn't need a CMS on this new website?
guess what we need to build now to become compliant with GDPR regulations

lol
I'm confused why that would require a CMS
but then again your front end and back end are tightly integrated from what I remember.

8:51 AM
@djsmiley2k ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)

basically part of GDPR is that you need to allow your end-user access to view all their data and withdraw consent at will without interaction with the data holder

without interacting....
ok, that's not what I was told
but I guess I'm in no way involved in that part of things
I understand if it's 'not charging them'

Man, that GDPR stuff messes with us all the way down here in NZ as well.

but not interacting?
@MichaelFrank :)
It's europe testing the wate rfor more 'serious' laws

We wanted to install a new visitor registration kiosk, cause receptionists are so last century... "NOPE CAUSE GDPR"

8:53 AM
if they can do this kind of thing, and countries external to europe accept it, great! :D

@djsmiley2k it is so that the user knows for certain that their data has been removed and that the company isn't just lying to them

What if someone from Europe registers, then the device gets stolen or hacked.

@Burgi then someone who wrote the law doesn't understand computers lol
if[deleted==true=]
  return nothing; ## MUAHAHHA WE STILL HAVE YOUR DATA!
else
  return userdata;
done
You know what, this is one place that using a blockchain, might actually make sense
you could 'give' your data via the blockchain (your own personal chain)
and retract it
every company would then be able to share your data, but it'd be written to your block chain who they shared it to
It doesn't stop data leaks etc
but it gives an auditable trail of where your data has actually 'gone'

i think it is so the end-user can't be manipulated into remaining on the system even if they want to leave

Right yes
but.... if your company is willing to do that
aren't they just willing to lie about deleting it too?
the fines are the same either way
4% of income or whatever it is

8:57 AM
also it reduces the burden on smaller companies who might not have the staff to perform multiple data cleansings

Nod
So not so much content management, as user data management

yeah but if we had used something like WordPress we could have got that framework to do the heavy lifting on the user management
the way we are having to do it now is roll our own user profile storage system
basically when i lodged my official complaint that as technical lead they were ignoring my advice and it would cause us more harm in the future by making the website static and the data capture contact forms silo'd i was told to STFU and just do it
anyway the long and the short of it is that it has come back and bit us on the arse
we have a meeting this afternoon where i have to say "i told you so" in a polite, business friendly way
ideally without looking too smug
@djsmiley2k > Right to Access. Provide a way for users to request access to, and view the data you have collected from them.

Bob
9:20 AM
hi

> Right to be forgotten. Give users a way to withdraw consent and delete personal data collected from them.

@Burgi That doesn't say without interaction though.

true but if you have to give them a platform to view their data that necessitates the need for user profiles and from there it is an easy leap to chuck in a delete button

user226528
@Burgi Hi. :)

user226528
What's this "right to be forgotten"? Part of the new data laws?

@FleetCommand they do nothing for me on vivaldi (which is chrome based)

nothing on FF either

I could probably just plug in a laptop tbh...

it plugs into the HDMI port of the TV and she can use her phone/tablet to cast netflix etc to it
@MichaelFrank its only £35
iirc it has free shipping

you could get a rescue PC from a skip and use that to do the same job if you want a free alternative

@Burgi oh now that sucks.
@MichaelFrank If you come to my house, I'll give you a PC.
@Burgi Also this is good advice

@Burgi done that ;p

> How should the information be provided?

You must verify the identity of the person making the request, using ‘reasonable means’.

If the request is made electronically, you should provide the information in a commonly used electronic format.

Yea, I have a 385 G5p and a Fujitsu RX200 S6 that doesn't boot. :(

@Burgi That's pretty much the same as a SAR in the current regulations, no? And you can charge for it "Organisations may charge a fee of up to £10" - with the added complication is that you have to delete it on request.
Deletion will cause havoc on our current systems as every note on a customer account will have to be deleted. And may be incompatible with current regulations that state we have to keep data available for when a customer makes a complaint to OFGEM :/

@Burgi hahah send them a jpg
so they can'y copy/pasteit anywhere

@djsmiley2k Better still uuencoded :)

11:00 AM
@DavidPostill that is allowed according to the ICO
> What should we do about data that records a disputed opinion?

It is also complex if the data in question records an opinion. Opinions are, by their very nature, subjective, and it can be difficult to conclude that the record of an opinion is inaccurate. As long as the record shows clearly that the information is an opinion and, where appropriate, whose opinion it is, it may be difficult to say that it is inaccurate and needs to be rectified.

@Burgi ? That we can delete it? Or that we have to keep it?

you can keep it
i think

:D
It's allowed, when it's allowed.
Simples.

i've had no training on GDPR and have only made assumptions based on what I have read

user226528
@djsmiley2k You do know that OCR has been invented already, right?

11:02 AM
@Burgi So that means we have to keep everything in case the customer wishes to make a future complaint that may be deadlocked and go to the Ombudsman ...

As you're not the data controller for your company, nothing much to worry about
@FleetCommand oh sure
but average consumer has no clue :D

user226528
Hmm. Devious.

@DavidPostill And so it begins :)
As I said, companies will find ways that have a 'business requirement' to keep data

@djsmiley2k i think i might be as the lead dev

Do we have to delete all meter readings? :) Then we can't bill customers ...

> ☐ We have published the contact details of the DPO and communicated them to the ICO.

> When does the right to erasure not apply?

The right to erasure does not apply if processing is necessary for one of the following reasons:
to comply with a legal obligation;
for the establishment, exercise or defence of legal claims.

So, if I want to protect my company against being sued for holding customer data, I need to hold the customer data showing they granted me permission to hold it, even after they request I delete it, because if I delete it, i can't prove they gave me permission in the first place?

Ave
not exactly
It's not so much a "need" but more of a "makes your life easier but costs a ton"

I actually think in this day and age, for most people a NUC class machine's close to 'perfect' for a home server
Speaking of things that are not really needed...

thing is
NUC is too expensive
