That's the only way I was able to see it too. The value seems surprisingly low for you if that's rep but will look at the query more to confirm I suppose.

@bwDraco's on the list too if I sort by answers, but not if I sort by average score... even though avg score should fit between 6 and 7

Bob's number 1 with this query!!
Including the wiki posts and the closed posts
With or without those (wiki and closed) he is number #1 for those with more than 400 answers.
My math was either way off or I forgot to move a decimal point.... lol

@Facebook that's probably because I barely have over 400

@GrahamWager The theory is that two out of four level 4 people have small dogs as their Gravatars, and no lie, not one minute after changing my Gravatar to this stupid looking dog I hit level 3.

...as I make sure I'm not missing any odds and ends for Astaroth, it dawned upon me that I needed a SATA cable for one of the SSDs - turns out the ROG Crosshair VI Extreme comes with a full complement of 8 such cables.
It even comes with an SLI HB bridge, for crying out loud!
erm
that's pretty normal, other than there being 8 cables
Hmm?
sata cables is one of those things other than having not enough or too many
and I have a few SLI bridges lying arounf
...and I just remembered that I have an unused SATA cable from one of my old hard drives--which means it's a non-problem.
The Ryzen processor provides four SATA ports, while X370 provides another four (which technically can be configured as two SATA Express or four PCIe 3.0 lanes, though most motherboard manufacturers don't do that).

@bwDraco ...are you saying they have an on-die controller?
Yes, it does.
Zeppelin is an SoC.
Bob
Bob
*shrug* integrating an AHCI controller seems largely pointless on a desktop part
though if they intend to share the die with mobile parts, I suppose...
@Bob and consoles
Wasn't the idea of zen basically being able to use the same basic core design in as large or small a setup as possible?
...did a quick test of the SanDisk SSD in the hard drive dock, looks OK.
@JourneymanGeek Yup. One die to rule them all.
02:46
also handy since AMD's basically got a good chunk of the console market locked down
Zeppelin is used in all three current Zen product families: Ryzen, Ryzen Threadripper, and EPYC.
Mobile will get a new die with on-chip Vega graphics.
3/12 parts purchased. I'll probably be cleared to order the rest this weekend.
Bob
Bob
@JourneymanGeek large, yea. small, not so much...
@Bob It's just under 200 mm^2.
@Bob there's nothing stopping AMD from doing say, a single or dual core processor if there's demand
It's not really designed for mobile, though some of the chips can be adapted to mobile platforms; the Ryzen 7 1700 operates within a mobile power envelope (albeit limited to full-fat gaming laptops).
When there are laptop GPUs that dissipate 150+ W, getting rid of 65 W isn't going to be too hard.
Come to think of it, Ryzen would make an excellent mobile workstation processor.

Soooooooooo firstly I setup the monitoring to stop alerting when someone removed a laptop from the lan, or rebooted their desktop. Yey. better
Now I'm like ok what are these unknown ports.... so I go to try and find the switch. I cannot find it... :/
maybe it got walled up
@JourneymanGeek lol
I recall at a old place, we once found a switch under the raised floor
no one knew it was there.
there was one port at the school I quit which... wasn't connected to anything logical
I knew where both ends were, but it would get an IP address from a spare router someone shoved in a classroom on the other side of the school, and stop working if I removed it
I eventually got fed up and just went wireless.
lol
some weird point to point setup for something
10:42
ya
but none of it was documented
Always fun ;D
and me "getting fed up and going wireless" is a sure sign things are really bad
oh, I left, I donno, a dozen pages of documentation
I'm trying to figure out the best way to approach this problem of these 'active but not actually active' ports
and no one's called me about the two main wifi routers yet
so should be fine.
Its just day to day "small" things that would be missing me
do you know if they have replaced you yet?
10:56
From what I heard no.
Port	Enabled	Named	Cabled
1	Y	Y	Y
2	N	Y	N
8	N	Y	Y
18	N	Y	N
29	Y	Y	Y
30	Y	N	N
32	Y	Y	N
38	N	Y	N
43	Y	Y	Y
44	Y	Y	Y
45	Y	Y	Y
;D
\o/
If it's not cabled, it's getting disabled and renamed to spare. If it's cabled but not enabled, it's getting renamed to spare....
and I should 'try' and remove the cable too, but that is a mess I don't even want to touch
that sounds like a weekend job for the helpdesk
oh god no way are they being allowed in the DC.
We have a op's team who 'could' do it
but we don't trust them enough :
And I'm bored. so I'm doing it, and updating the configs on the switches as I go
I 'could' write a excel forumla to check the cells and put the correct 'advice' in the column, but meh

@djsmiley2k i haven't ever worked in a large IT team like that so menial tasks like cab clean ups always fell to the helpdesk
nod
There's no seperation currently (physically) of the internal network, and the customer networks
so if someone has physical access to our switches, they also can touch the customer equipment

12:51
Hell-o
flails at windows
I just want to mount a network filesystem WHY IS THIS SO HARD
good question, what's going wrong @ToxicFrog?
13:06
I can access the share just fine from linux machines using smbclient
I used to be able to access it from windows using map network drive, back when I was running win7
Since updating to win10 it rejects all attempts with "system error 86: the specified network password is not correct"
The password has not changed.
oh, ew
only thing I can think of trying, is can you just access it 'normally'?
i.e. in windows explorer, put the path, but don't do the whole map network drive dialog
And is there any errors on the linux machines?
No errors linux-side. smbclient --user=ben //ancilla/ancilla_installs => it prompts me with "enter WORKGROUP\ben's password" => I enter the password and it gives me the smb> prompt and I can list/upload/download files just fine.
In the samba log tho?
When win10 tries to map the drive, it's going to leave a log entry either way.
If it isn't..... then it's not even trying to connect.
Nothing in the logs on the server, but there's nothing for the successful connections from other machines either, so it may just be running with a really low log-level
:/
only other thing i can think of is either win10 isn't sending the workgroup
Or it's using cached credentials in the credential manager for some reason
13:20
On the windows machine -- trying to access either \\ancilla or \\ancilla\ancilla_installs via explorer opens the same credentials window I get when trying to map network drive, with the same results.
NET USE /user:ben prompts me for a password and then gives me system error 86.
NET USE with no /user prompts me for a user and then a password; if I use "ben", "ancilla\ben", or "WORKGROUP\ben" as the user I get the same results.
If I use "ben@ancilla" it prompts me for the password, then says "the password is invalid for \\ancilla\ancilla_installs", prompts me again, then says "system error 5: access is denied"
Hmm. There was an entry for "ancilla" in the credentials manager.
If I delete that, /user:ben still results in error 86, and not specifying a username but entering one when prompted results in error 1326: the username or password is incorrect.
goes to turn up the smbd log level
weird
and nslookup ancilla gives you the right IP?
no c:\windows\system32\hosts hacks?
nslookup ancilla returns the correct IP, although it reports it as ancilla.lan
wtf
Why is orion showing a port that is in the shutdown state, as in error :/
of frikkin course it's down, it's disabled! -_-;
13:35
Ok, let's see what a successful login from the laptop using smbclient looks like
/me stabs orion
Why would it show alerts for ports in a shutdown state o_O
It's like 'OMG WE CAN'T PING THE THING WE TURNED OFF!!!!'
"mapping user [WORKGROUP][ben] from workstation [THOTH]" ... "mapped user is [ANCILLA][ben]@[THOTH]" ... "sam authentication succeeded" ... "PAM account succeeded" ... "authentication for user ben succeeded"
Plus like two pages of error messages about being unable to access authentication methods that I don't use, and one "can't find unix id for an unmapped group".
But that looks reasonably straightforward.
Now I try it from windows....
Ok, it initially tries to log in with the EMAIL ADDRESS that I registered my MS account with, wtf
That fails, to the surprise of no-one, so it prompts for username and password
I enter those
"checking password for unmapped user [ancilla][ben]@[DURANDAL]" ... "mapped user is [ancilla][ben]@[DURANDAL]", so same as before except ancilla is lowercase... "sam authentication for user [ben] failed with NT_STATUS_WRONG_PASSWORD"
:/
somethings borked
13:47
Hah!
Googling the error messages from smb eventually led me to a solution
both for you and me :D
smbd by default rejects the earlier NT and NTLM protocols in favour of NTLMv2
it seems if I modify this alert, to only alert when an interface isn't disabled.... it's going to go bonkers, and re-alert all the live alerts.
Win10's default configuration is "send NT and NTLM, use NTLMv2 if negotiated"
But I guess that negotiation is failing for some reason
If I configure the win10 machine to send NTLMv2 from the start and not even try the older protocols it works.
only microsoft could come up with 'use the insecure protocols first, and when they fail then send it securely'
@ToxicFrog I feel like that is a workgroup setting....
13:50
I'm not sure if the fault here lies on the smbd side (maybe it's saying "yes I support those protocols" and just refusing to authenticate using them) or on the win10 side.
I didn't think workgroups had "settings", unlike domains, but windows networking is largely a mystery to me
The relevant setting is in Local Security Policy > Local Policies > Security > Network Security
> Configure the Network security: LAN Manager Authentication Level setting to Send NTLMv2 responses only. Microsoft and a number of independent organizations strongly recommend this level of authentication when all client computers support NTLMv2.
yup
glares at the frontend guy just fracking update the fracking ticket! STOP DOING EVERYTHING VERBALLY!!!!!!!!!!!!
why don't they do this by default, a nd let you change it back to 0 if you need to :/
@Burgi :D
verbal updates the worst.
because then people ask for stuff verbally
13:52
And I mean, the server already defaults to supporting NTLMv2 only and rejecting NM/NTLMv2
and deny it
@Burgi I get the feeling this guy has never really worked somewhere, where people will let him take the blame
or he's plain stupid ;D
he is complaining that he keeps telling a particular CSA the same thing so i said "log it in the ticket so in a weeks time when she asks again you can refer her and her manager back to the ticket"
his response "i don't feel comfortable doing that"
what the actual fuck....?

i'll be honest i'd rather he were gone sigh
At least maybe then you could get someone who had a clue :/
he is very good technically but he just lacks the ability to work in a team
grrrrrrr

Anyone chime in on this as I'm confused: superuser.com/questions/1260981/…
Ben perhaps?
LOL sorry man
I have a chat there but I'm lost
Yeah, WMI is probably the way to go
But I'm totally confused of the expected results per the comment clarification he leave
It's stated no drive letter and I'm totally confused
I don't think you can supply a filename to a Win32_Volume search
Oh, the file belongs to a partition that doesn't have its own drive letter, but is mounted in some directory tree on a volume that does
Yeah, I'm not familiar with that functionality
There's an option in Disk Management that lets you make a mount point like that
22:55
Is it like Linux so rather than C:\ you can have \mnt\folder? The guy says no drive letter assigned to partition but per howtogeek.com/98195/… I still see a drive letter assigned to partition if this is the Disk Management functionality you refer too.
That appears to be the thing
The drive letter is assigned to the volume hosting the directory structure
Based on your reading of the question, doesn't it simply sound like the output needs to match the output of df <file path> though? The example that is closest still passes "<drive letter>:\file path" so I assume the output is not expected to be <drive letter>:` and rather \\<machinename>\root\cimv2:Win32_Volume.DeviceID="\\\\?\\Volume{c8d09292-0000-0000-0‌000-903e00000000}\\<file path>"`?
I would guess that he's looking for an object of the kind returned by Get-Partition
But I don't know for sure :/
Okay, he may need to clarify further and edit his question I suppose. I may kindly apologize for not being able to help and make the suggestion. I was trying to give him ideas more than anything since my initial suggestion did not seem to suffice. I appreciate your time sir!
I just found a thing that might work but is a little hacky
23:02
Please feel free to step in and take over if you can help him.
Though I don't know what df is supposed to do, so I should test that first
Let me give you screen shot
That's what it returns after throwing first arg file name
Hm, so it gives volume info
the file name is outfile with no extension
OK, that's manageable
23:05
I looked up df man too and read about it but I'm Linux rookie still
Let's see... I could go for the pure PS but kinda hacky way, or the ugly but correct P/Invoke way
I look forward to seeing what you come up with regardless.
@JourneymanGeek that's incredible, and a good reason why they don't even allow you to bring in headphones to secure facilities
Perhaps it's `DeviceID: \\?\Volume{c8d09292-0000-0000-0000-903e00000000}` type format? I have to step away for a few but will check back in later.
