Storage spaces is way cool, but it was kept so much under wraps through beta that not much is known about the nuts and bolts of it
@JaredTritsch: Oh, I worked out out eventually. Its just wierd
Yeah. It's different from classic raid configurations so its weird at first.
more like, why it dosen't like my drives ;p
Lol yup. And it HATES Linux. It just has no clue how to deal with ext4
My solution is that I moved all my Linux partitions onto its own physical drive. Then I could maximize my storage space potential.
OH
frigging
Bob
Bob
07:02
How does it react to loss of a drive?
depends on the setting
Flags it as "failed" and the array goes into a degraded state.
Bob
Bob
so partial data loss?
If you have it redundant, no.
Bob
Bob
if you have it redundant, then it's basically RAID
07:03
You can have up to 2-drive redundancy.
actually 3
with 5 drives
Bob
Bob
JBOD is not redundant by nature
JBOD + RAID, on the other hand... :P
It's not JBOD unless you set it to be
@journeyman if you have it in 3-way mirror that covers you for up to two failures.
yup, and there's raid mode
Bob
Bob
you two are confus-
oh, that explains a lot -_-
07:05
@JaredTritsch: I'm posting another answer BTW
Storage spaces has 4 options.
you'll still have the 'selected' answer, but I'm NOT wasting these screenshots
Hehe you can edit them into mine if you want.
lol
it would be a VERY drastic edit
believe me
Anyway. SS has 4 options, JBOD, raid 1, raid 5, and 3 way mirror
07:06
I was thinking of that, but it was implausible without shredding the hell out of your answer
Idc.
Whatever makes a clearer answer for other people.
I'm just here to help ;-) and show off a bit.
lol
You get the tick and the upvote. I get less work cause I typed out most of this already ;p
No worries :-P let's see what you got.
Anyone have any thoughts on my question?

Q: Can a single volume be assigned multiple drive letters?

Jared TritschI am working on migrating data across many disparate drives onto one massive Windows 8 Storage Space. Problem I have is that many of my programs reference various drive letters to acces their libraries, files, music, movies, etc. Is there any way I can, for example, have any reference of drives...

actually, i think its doable
though I'd think folder mapping might be neater
I've never even heard of it being done before, but I REALLY don't want to sift through and repath hundreds of directors...
07:12
actually its just a matter of... adding another drive letter to the volume
? You write up an answer and its and easy 35 points to you.
lol
Once I'm done with this, and tested it
Cause just reconfiguring utorrent alone is like 5 hours work...
@JaredTritsch windows 7 or 8?
>.< man getting 15 up votes is like seeing a unicorn... My only answer that got close was closed on me :-(
Windows 8
Bob
Bob
07:16
@JaredTritsch answered :P
OOH
I forgot about that approach
Bob
Bob
@JourneymanGeek Folder mapping is a NTFS feature, done through Disk Management
It's not possible to use that for an extra letter
Disk Management doesn't like adding extra letters, either
not what I was gonna do
Bob
Bob
lol
wierd, I remember doign that
Bob
Bob
07:17
DM that was my first thought, but it failed
ugh, I need to stop hiding my taskbar
I can't hit windows to bring it up any more
I'm curious what JG is going for... SUBST works in win 8?
Bob
Bob
@JaredTritsch IIRC, you can open the config file and do a find/replace to change all the paths
oh, my bad.
My approach didn't work
Bob
Bob
@JourneymanGeek Win+T
@JourneymanGeek What was it? :P
07:18
disk management ;p
folder mapping was just a random idea I tossed out
symlinks might work here too
Bob
Bob
nah
@bob is subst tested?
but I'm not familiar enough to actually answer with em
Bob
Bob
@JaredTritsch yes
symlinks need to create an actual file
@JaredTritsch: its an old trick, so ya, would work
07:19
Cool. 35 points headed your way.
Bob
Bob
so it must sit on a drive
@JaredTritsch thanks :P
Also symlinks can't be pointed to a root drive.
Bob
Bob
Windows 8 hasn't really removed anything on the command line side
@JaredTritsch o.O never knew that
@JaredTritsch: I think I have ONE question with 15 rep in the contest
oh, I figured you'd map folder to folder
I know. Lucky bastard. I want that surface!
:-P
07:21
lol
I still only have a 2/3 chance of it ;p
for now
Who hit tier 4? It was only two people last I checked...
Graham Wagner was the third
Ahhh nice. We got him to tier 3 last night. Bugger was busy today.
lol
I took advantage of the early wave
Bob
Bob
@JaredTritsch The target can be a root (just tested)
07:23
I'm not actually sure why I'm still answering windows 8 questions ;p
Yeah. You were tier 4, what? Three days into the contest?
Bob
Bob
@JourneymanGeek Preventing others :P
You're still answering questions cause you have 40k rep and still want more.
@Bob: er, me getting votes dosen't stop others from
@JaredTritsch: Well, actually, I hardly ever worry about rep at this point
the next guy is about 10K ahead
/me likes documenting tho ;p
Bob
Bob
@JourneymanGeek if you answer quickly, others can't post the exact same answer :P
07:26
@Bob: I don't always answer quickly. ;p
Bob
Bob
I successfully created a link from C:\d to D:\ — cable729 3 mins ago
:\
it's not the same thing
@bob that's not JG's style. He prefers taking someone else's answer, then blowing them into oblivion with a barrage of screenshots.
Bob
Bob
lol
@JaredTritsch: actually, while its not true in your case, Its actually what I do ;p
your answer was ok. Bad answers annoy me
youve done that to me not one, but TWICE! lol
07:28
twice?
It's not intentional on your part of course.
naw, I do that whenever I think there's a benefit ;p
Yeah there was one question a couple days ago where I was the only answer for like 3 hours, then you come along and give the same answer but pretty with shiny screenshots.
I'm not mad, but it was a face palm moment.
lol
which one?
Bob
Bob
xD
07:30
I'll have to look I don't remember
Bob
Bob
has anyone here used django? :S
I really don't actually notice. I skim through the answers, see that I can post something neat... and poof
@Bob: coded on, or used ?
Bob
Bob
@JourneymanGeek uhm, set it up
I had a OSQA install for a while, which ran on it
Bob
Bob
lol
startproject worked, but missing the manage.py script
this is giving me a headache
07:32
oh, that level of set up
no clue :/
Bob
Bob
maybe I should actually install it properly :P

A: What gets synced across computers using the same Microsoft Account?

Journeyman GeekQuite a lot actually - app settings(probably just for modern apps), browser settings, mouse and file explorer settings. You can see what you can turn off and on at the settings page. Everything there but passwords seem on by default (passwords need you to verify a e mail sent to your e mail add...

This wasn't it, but here's one.
OH
I forgot to comment why link only answers are bad :/
I was like, COME ON! My link has the whole list!
your link can go down
rendering your answer useless
07:34
Ah, true.
Part of the reason I actually 'do' screenshots is SU really is a self contained place.
We don't have to rely on windows supersite keeping the same layout, for example
Yeah, but its hard to get an answer up quick when there are questions like that that can easily be answered by a link to the list...
But I see the point.
I don't see if there's other answers
07:36
Maybe one day I'll go back and write a blog post with the exhaustive list.
I see if there's answers I can improve easily (with screenshots!) or answers I can answer in detail
Are you really in Singapore? Or is that alias?
Bob
Bob
@JourneymanGeek You just love answering answers, don't you? :P
Really in singapore
@Bob: yes!
and they give me a direction to poke around computers
@bob he just likes showing off his snip-fu.
07:38
@JaredTritsch: I admit, its a lot easier lately
notes the snipping tool makes it easier. On windows 8 there's that awesome win-prntscn button
Hm, I totally would have pegged you for "basement it office beneath a New York high rise" type.
lol
Sadly, still in school at my age
got a job or two lined up though
Nice. You add your super user banner to your resume?
kinda
Last time I was job hunting, I wasn't very active on SU
Bob
Bob
lol
07:40
actually, It might not have even started
4 years ago?
then I went back to school (again, flunked twice :/)
Bob
Bob
all you need is a little SO
ya, around there
Not really a coder ;p
SF style stuff interests me more
<-- definitely not a coder. But I'm famous in scifi.SE
07:42
I'm the sorta guy who goes OOH AAAH over server-rooms rather than code.
@journeymangeek +1! Me too!
@JaredTritsch: I'm sorta mythical here ;p
(by which people occationally wonder about the nature of my existance)
dons voice of scooter from borderlands you're like a unicorrrrnn!!!
lol
See my profile ;p
First time I got 200 rep in a day, I was sick, high as a kite, and posted, what seemed a rather loopy answer ;p
Boo hiss clacking keyboards. Chiclet keys FTW!
I've only been here three weeks and I've hit the cap three times...
07:44
lol
Bob
Bob
@JaredTritsch I have no idea how people do that :(
@JaredTritsch: prolly cause of the windows 8 contest. Hitting 200 is USUALLY a big thing
Bob
Bob
I've only hit it once in the better part of a year
@JaredTritsch: I'm not very comfy with chicklet keys
I LOVE my mechanical
Nah. I just answer everything I can. Almost all my answers have 1-3 votes each.
07:45
though If i worked for someone else, I'd go for somethign quieter
Office to yourself?
Or noisy cube farm?
working for my dad
Ah even better.
07:46
@agent86 I think your answer must have helped, that or putting it in hibernation instead of sleep
pay's crap, benefits are usually good
though this week, i'm basically on my own, which is horrid
Me I'm in a noisy open desk area managing a data center. No one cares about keyboard noise but mu wrists want to slash themselves if I have to use a mech keyboard.
Bob
Bob
Hm.. considering MUI Snap has a fixed width (320px), there needs to be some standard user agent element for MUI Snapped apps so sites can display the mobile view
...or just use a common mobile user agent :P
lol
I just switch the site to mobile mode
hmmm @JourneymanGeek your answer about syncing finally made me read the fine print, it indeed mentions backgrounds
07:48
@JaredTritsch: from my very unscientific tests, the noise levels off my BW arn't much worse than any other desktop keyboard
granted I tried a logitech and a 'mercury'
yeah, because BWs are cushioned.
Oh, and heavy as hell
Try the older ones that had springs... Oy!
I wanted one!
But my brother ordered it, and the order got cancelled for some reason
Me I use a Logitech illuminated. <3
07:50
blackwidow ultimate at the moment
That and my Razer mamba 2012 and I'm in heaven. Funny I like thin keyboard, but heavy nice.
got my eyes on a razer taipan, but thats once I get the rest of my system.
@JourneymanGeek I think I have that one too, the loud one :P
my current mouse is a g300, great mouse, but a pain in the rear to find
Now I need a nice mouse to go with it
07:51
Yeah. System $$ always takes precedence over perifs. Alas my next thousand USD will be buying 6 more 3tb hDDS
@JaredTritsch: If I worked in a place that allowed it, I'd just lug my older hardware over
Doesn't that one have a little too many buttons?
@IvoFlipse: actually, no
07:52
That's to offset the 6tbs I already filled up >.<
I DON'T really like the four side buttons
I have buttons like that on my mouse (the left ones), I never use them
I use the ones under the scrollwheel for scrolling
Bob
Bob
@IvoFlipse need more buttons! :P
if those side buttons were off to thumbable positions though...
Bob
Bob
07:53
@JourneymanGeek why not?
ah
The new top of the line mouse from Logitech has one button below the thumb, which might be nice
That scroll wheel looks pleasant to use
I think I tried to hold one of those
that one keeps is simple enough @JourneymanGeek
07:54
other than size (not sure on that) and cost (almost 3x my g300 :/)
same number of buttons
The scroll wheel is a dream. Plus it's 7200 dpi, both a red and blue laser for different surfaces, wired/wireless modes, and its heavy!
I wonder if that Logitech touchpad would be any good, to use in addition to a mouse that is
I used the taipans before. I like the orochi better for a small mouse.
@JaredTritsch what's the model name?
hm, the small mouse thing.. might be an issue, I prefer chunky mice ;p
07:56
@IvoFlipse which one? Mine?
Razer mamba 2012
@JaredTritsch Yeah, that one
I'm not sure if I want wireless, the battery always dies on me at the wrong moment
I do keep spares around and a charger, but still
they always died during SC2 matches :P
@IvoFlipse: my spare's a M310
battery goes on and on and on
(and only has 2 buttons)
I've spend weeks drawing circles around frigging dog paws
That stuff kills your battery
lol
thats something I suspect a tablet would be easier for
07:58
@JaredTritsch And a price tag to match! :P
@ivoflipse the mamba is both wired and wireless so if your battery goes you can just plug In a wire and keep going.
@JaredTritsch Now that's something I'd dig
If you want it's little brother check out orochi. Same features but a notebook version. Half the cost too.
Else I'd probably go for this one
That one is nice. I like the weight of that series
07:59
it has a little button on the left, which you could use like alt+tab
I need my mice to feel like I'm holding a stone. If its too light I find them hard to control.
@JaredTritsch Naah, its expensive, but I need it professionally, not just to frag the shit out of stuff :P
is that the one with the cool scrollwheel?
@ivoflipse I use this at work. I own two. It is amazing for both applications, because of the dpi and ergonomic design.
@journeymangeek yes.
And you can even change the LED color! I have it pulsing through the rainbow.
@ivoflipse pssh, just write it off as a business expense.
I meant the logitechs, some models have a metal scrollwheel that free rotates ;p
08:02
@JaredTritsch That requires income to write it off from :P
Ew.... Free rotate? Yuk
I need my click stops.
free rotation, no idea. Metal scrollwheel? HECK YES
Meh. The Razer mice all use neoprene on the wheels (wetsuit material). Sticky enough to grab skin, but comfy enough to be wondrous. Metal would be.... Slippery.
Sweat+brushed aluminum=slip and slide for the palm and fingers.
You want your mouse to be an extension of your hand, not flying across the desk when you need it most. It's like that one last heart in Zelda. It's just not there when you need it.
Hmm that Mamba is getting some mixed reviews, but might be also for older models
Yeah the original version had bugs, but the 2012 version is now one of their flagship models.
If you want a cheaper version look at the DeathAdder. It's only 60, and its just a bit less dpi and no wireless, but its the same shape and weight.
08:14
Man I wish I could try them out somewhere :\
Best buy stocks the DeathAdder. Idk where you live but if you have a Fry's then you can see the mamba there.
Netherlands?? Pssh can't help you there >.<
@JaredTritsch Hehe, yeah can't blame you
We have plenty of stores here, but they don't all stock the expensive mice and you can't test them everywhere
Anyway... I'm off to bed. It's 2:20 am here...
Sleep well :)
08:18
Damn chat is broken in IE10
Can't change the notification sound or click on users
09:12
@Tom & @Sathya here is the bug in script I was talking about.
Its amazing how much power there is in simple, modern devices
@TomWijsman I got the email on 11th Oct saying it was coming, and it arrived on the 23rd Oct I think. This is from the UK to AU.
@JourneymanGeek I tried to install the dotnet framework in Windows 8 but it asked every time to download the files over the internet while I have standalone setup ~200mb
@avirk: You shouldn't need to unless an application asks for it
@JourneymanGeek But there is no way to install it and I need it for an application :)
09:21
hmm
I'd guess the standalone setup dosen't work any more?
@JourneymanGeek i downloaded it just today. but wait its not sp1 just only 3.5
@JourneymanGeek link me if you can?
@avirk: I have no idea, mine downloaded it off the internet ;p
@JourneymanGeek hmmmmm
So go for a question for it?
Bob
Bob
... giving a complete answer = a fair bit slower than three other people :P
At least you don't stretch them, @JourneymanGeek :P
09:29
:P
no, I usually shrink em ;p
Why can't they crop it or something?
too many screenshots make me dizzy.
Bob
Bob
seriously, though, that's bad. it looks fugly :\
BLURRY! BAD!
so much for cleartype :P
yay, django finally installed
I think
the screenshots arn't his I'd suspect
I am going out for dinner. Cya laters.
Bob
Bob
09:40
@JourneymanGeek well, whoever took them
@Bob: well he copy pasted them from another site
Bob
Bob
I refuse to believe the possibility of Windows scaling that much :P
lol
one moment
Bob
Bob
@JourneymanGeek ... please don't say ...
I'm about 30% sure he copied it ;p
Bob
Bob
09:42
o.O
ok, I just discovered virtualenv does not play nice with Windows
didn't even use imgur
What's that?
Bob
Bob
@JourneymanGeek creates an isolated Python environment
Bob
Bob
when you run the activate script in the environment, it tweaks paths a bit
helps with package conflicts, etc
but on Windows it doesn't tweak .py associations
ahh
prolly cause windows dosen't read the first line
Bob
Bob
09:45
had to manually add that bit... which involved base64 decoding, unzlibbing, changing, zlibbing, base64 decoding
@JourneymanGeek nothing to do with that
also, they might have used the magnifier for the screenshot
Bob
Bob
it has an activate.bat and activate.sh
@JourneymanGeek good point, I forgot about that :P
there's a nice hack to get virtualenv working fully with Windows: stackoverflow.com/a/7275321/1030702
but it's rather tedious
er actually no
this guys screenshots just suck
Bob
Bob
...
what the hell happened there?!
Bob
Bob
09:51
If he can post screenshots like that without thinking something's wrong, I hope his job has nothing to do with graphical/interface design. Nothing.

A: Can I use the default pdf reader in desktop ui mode

SLaksNo. The PDF reader is a Modern UI app; you cannot run Modern UI apps on the desktop. You could run it on a virtual machine instead.

what? Its on his profile!
Bob

09:54
That answer makes sense until that last line.
ahh ;p
wait...
superuser.com/questions/494558/changing-shortcut-keys thats the oddest hardware/software combination I can think of

Some days, though, running Adobe Reader does make me feel like I'm running a whole OS just to view PDFs. I mean, resource usage, not functionality.

@JourneymanGeek ...is that Win8 on a chromebook?
I just run pdfxchange these days
@Bob: The original chomebook
which was given out for free to some lucky folk

is the resolution even high enough for MUI?
ah, 1280x800
so, MUI but no snapping
@JourneymanGeek What stats were you looking for again?
