FAIL :<
lol
NO ONE knows about that
The prizes for the Windows 8 Challenge are quite good. I'm impressed.
@VianEsterhuizen Not a joke are they? lol
Hello all, I am not fully aware of HDMI stuff so I wanted to ask if HDMI is only for monitors with inbuilt speakers ?
I can't believe 129 people are getting a t-shirt O_o
@Failed_Noob It shouldn't require speakers, no.
Bob
Bob
15:09
lol
the t-shirts might end up costing more than the others combined
@r.tanner.f It would make my day if I ever meet anyone in the wild wearing it :D
Bob
Bob
@OliverSalzburg Note to self: wear the t-shirt in public :P
Hi :3 Parts north and/or east of where I live got hit really hard. My immediate area is fine. No property damage. Some people lost power but I didn't.
@OliverSalzburg xD Would be cool.
@Bob Are you kidding? I'm going to wear that t-shirt until it has holes, and then some more until it falls apart.
No one has ever known what superuser is when I wore a superuser shirt. And I own a few :D
Bob
Bob
15:10
@Failed_Noob HDMI can carry both video and sound
what's superuser?
Bob
Bob
if your display has an HDMI port but no speakers/audio out, then you'll only have the video
@Bob But if sound is not available then even if sound is being "pushed" from the source, it will just be discarded
Bob
Bob
@allquixotic well, contrary to popular belief you can't just solder a random wire between two electronic devices and expect them to communicate :P
so I plug the speakers to audio port of a monitos that supports HDMI ?
15:12
@Sathya What's the word on the webapps contest anyway? =D I'm getting addicted to these things.
Bob
Bob
@Failed_Noob you may as well plug the speakers directly into the computer
@allquixotic Glad to hear
Bob
Bob
@allquixotic lucky! :O
@Failed_Noob Yes that would work also
it's weird... I was watching the radar last night as the hurricane swirled through our area
there were bands of yellow and red (intensity) rain/wind, and they missed us by less than 10 miles, every single time
we were under "dark green" (steady rain) intensity all night long
15:13
@r.tanner.f One post with 8 upvotes and you get a video card or monitior or SSD. That's not bad if you ask me.
@allquixotic Nice. Did the eye miss you?
60 mph gusts, 30-40 mph standing winds... nothing we couldn't handle
@VianEsterhuizen Get a chance, and it's actually a lot more than that O_o
@r.tanner.f the eye scraped along the border of Maryland and Pennsylvania, but it didn't come south, so it missed me by a good ways... 35 miles? 40?
some parts of maryland did get hit extremely hard; the inner harbor is flooded; Ocean City is an absolute mess. people died. but us inlanders -- even though we're not extremely inland -- were ok
that's quite a bit
15:15
So let me get this straight, DVI is good enough if I want to connect my speakers to the CPU ?
3
bigger than this country
@jokerdino hurricanes are huge. this hurricane is bigger than several of our states :P 35 miles of missing the eye means you still get hit really hard
@Failed_Noob 'erm... not sure how to answer that?
@Failed_Noob DVI...? I don't think DVI does audio o_o
if you just want to do video only and no audio, DVI is enough
yeah, hurricanes are bigger than the Cyclones I am used to.
15:16
DVI does not do audio. If you're wanting to roll it all in to one cable then do HDMI
if you want to do audio only and no video, use S/PDIF or analog 3.5mm jack
but isnt the audio that gets played on my speaker digital itself without DVI or HDMI ?
it depends on how it's connected.
@Failed_Noob Not 'normally'
if you plug in a standard 3.5mm jack to the soundcard, that's definitely analog, NOT digital
if you use S/PDIF digital audio then yes, it's digital
15:17
I understand now . Thank you
if you don't know which one you're using then I can't provide you any more information about what it is
@r.tanner.f no word on that
I am going to buy a HDMI monitor for digital Audio and digital video ^_^
@Failed_Noob Then you'll also need a graphics card/laptop with HDMI out
@r.tanner.f Definitely didn't fully read rules :P
Oops
15:22
So AMD's strategy to save the company is to use ARM? lolol
would love to hear what @sidran32 thinks of AMD's new deal
STOP CLOSING ALL MY HIGH VOTE ANSWERS! Scowl
@HaydnWVN Yes I understand, I currently don't have graphic card with HDMI support , so I will be using DVI for the time being and later replacing it with a grraphic crad that supports HDMI
If I go for a graphic card which one would be good ? ...for gaming, video edting and watching HD videos
@Failed_Noob what's your price point?
300-500
15:31
yeah
what graphics card do you currently have?
Nvidia 9600 geforce
ah. and do you know how many watts your PSU is?
and whether your motherboard supports PCI Express 3.0?
it suports PCI express
okay, but there is PCI Express 1.x, 2.x and 3.x compatible motherboards
if you use a graphics card that uses a higher revision of PCI Express than your motherboard supports, it'll be slower than optimal
15:34
motherboard intel DP55WB
I dont know what is the PCI express version
okay, that's a "5" series chipset, Nehalem era, so that's PCI Express 2.0 or 2.1
PCI Express 3.0 came with the "Sandy Bridge-E" motherboards (X6 series) and "Ivy Bridge mainstream" motherboards (7 series)
if you buy a PCI Express 3.0 graphics card, it'll work, but it'll be slower than it could be
@r.tanner.f What contest ?
should I go for nVidia or ATI ?
@Failed_Noob nVidia
you could buy a graphics card a generation or two old, like the Radeon HD5870, which only uses PCI Express 2.0
or you could buy a current gen like a HD7950 which uses PCI Express 3.0, and then when you can afford to upgrade your mobo, do that
15:37

Q: Clean up a thon contest!

phwdKicking off the activity by introducing an idea brought up by JohnC. Clean up a thon!!! Cleaning's an art. My mop is my paintbrush. Our answer rate has dropped to 87% which may seem great but it's pretty low in the league of SE sites. So to counter this we will try to set up a contest si...

@Failed_Noob ATI
@OliverSalzburg that's an awfully unsubstantiated answer, isn't it? why do you say so? I'm recommending AMD because they have a better price/performance ratio, whereas Nvidia has better top-end performance if you have infinite money and don't care about your electric bill or fan noise
so why do you recommend Nvidia? :)
other than brand loyalty?
If I go for PCI express 3.0 will I be still able to play games like crysis and stuff ?
I'm willing to concede that Nvidia cards have their upsides, such as, if you make enough money to be able to sink ridiculous amounts into a super high-end configuration with dual GTX 680s and a 1500W PSU, the performance blows away what you get with AMD... but wear hearing protection and watch your electric bill lol
You can play crysis with a PCI 1x GPU
15:39
I have found that the different brands shine depending on their application. For example, I will never use an NVIDIA card on an HTPC. They always seem to have huge problems with HDMI overscan and never look right on a Television because of it.
Though not with everything at max
@Failed_Noob yes, of course, but the PCI Express revision supported by your motherboard will limit the data transfer rate of a PCI E 3.0 card, so it can't run at maximum performance
But if im going for a Multi-GPU setup, I love the sheer raw power of NVIDIA
buying a Radeon HD7970 or GeForce GTX 680 and plugging it into a PCI Express 2.0 motherboard is awfully wasteful of your money, because you'll only get the performance of a considerably lower-end GPU
so if you do stay with PCI Express 2.0 motherboard, then you should buy a slightly lower end GPU, which can't max out the PCI-E 2.0 data transfer limit anyway
@JaredTritsch also see pcpartpicker.com
useful for comparison
15:41
maybe I should go for PCI express 3 as I keep updating things every 2 or 3 years
gizmodo emergency site
anyway, the Radeon HD7950, the Core i7 3700, and a "Z77" Ivy Bridge motherboard chipset is a great way to start building out a new gaming PC if you can sink about $1200 into a new computer
I specced one out for a guy named Simon here in this chat, replete with RAM, HDD and case, and he ended up buying another carbon copy of the system for a friend because he liked it so much
budget was about $1250 or so and that computer will be able to play high end games on max settings for years to come
@allquixotic again, depends on the application
Ive spent well over 5 grand on a gaming Desktop, but got away with an HTPC for less than 400
both work beautifully for their appropriate applications.
@JaredTritsch well sort of... certain applications use APIs that favor one GPU over the other, but it should still work with other GPUs, maybe just not at the highest detail or highest framerate
@allquixotic im speaking from a cost/benefit standpoint.
15:44
some games have an Nvidia advertisement as you're starting them; you can tell that game is tuned for Nvidia GPUs and not so much AMD... some have an AMD advertisement as you're starting them :P
@JaredTritsch oh... well for an HTPC I wouldn't even be buying a discrete GPU; I'd settle with Ivy Bridge HD4000 graphics
Will AMD radeon work with intel motherboards ? I havnt seen amd stuff on intel things
@Sathya hi
AMD only really authorized their logo for games that are Eyefinity Gold Certified
@Failed_Noob yes, of course! it works fine. it's designed to.
@Failed_Noob You can use any card on any board, as long as the PCI-E slot is strong enough to support it.
15:45
@allquixotic It was appropriate for the given question :)
dont put a GTX680 in a PCI-E 1.0 x4 slot.
there is absolutely no compatibility problem whatsoever, and no negative performance impact to using AMD GPUs on Intel motherboards, or Nvidia GPUs on AMD motherboards, or AMD GPUs on ASrock motherboards, or... or... or... as long as the specs are technically compatible, it should just work
but yeah, try to avoid using anything less than a PCI Express 2.0 x16 slot for a graphics card
@allquixotic The correct response would, of course, have been "It depends" but I wasn't ready to respond to the "On what?" that was sure to follow :D
Thanks guys ^_^
yeah... not only is graphics card choice a question with tons of variables, its a rather divisive topic as so many different people have so many different experiences.
In truth, as long as you think out about what you need your card to DO, and take the time to make sure all your specs match your motherboard, you will be fine with whatever you pick.
15:49
@JaredTritsch that doesn't mean it's impossible to be objective, though
@OliverSalzburg actually sandy is dead :/
@allquixotic of course. I'm just saying there is no "One right answer"
right, if your question is "what's the best graphics card" then there's no one right answer
but if you narrow your criteria enough, there is eventually an objective answer
true
for example, if the question was, "I need a robust HTPC on teh cheap, which GPU?"
my answer would be none.
Get an an AMD APU and be done with it.
I remember things like benchmarks I've seen on anandtech and tomshardware, prices I've seen on sites like amazon and google shopping, performance experiences, and knowledge of driver quality, etc when making recommendations
of course much of it would be [citation needed] if it were on wikipedia, but in chat or when giving someone an honest opinion, i don't feel the need to show them the source data I'm drawing from
15:52
aaanyway.... back to work :=P
@JitendraVyas 'ello
but I do try to base it on facts and not on my biases because I have recommended Nvidia cards before to some people, even though I go with AMD if their budget seems low
"I want a super gaming rig! 8D ... oh, wait, I only have $700 :(" <--- go with AMD
@Sathya How can i show yesterday's discussion to give context?
post the permalink?
Well, I've caved in and decided to join in with the whole dog profile picture thing...not sure what the theory is but oh well!
15:54
@Failed_Noob I put ~$1000 USD into a high-end gaming system about 5-6 years ago (Q6600, 6gb RAM, ATI 4870) and it still plays some of the latest games fine on medium/high settings. I just bought an SSD to make it even quicker and i'm considering selling while the system is still worth some money to change to an i7, but i probably won't do so as the expensive doesn't outweigh the gains yet...
@GrahamWager UGH! Why?!?! Why?!?!?!?!??!!? Why couldn't you be a cat to even the odds 2-2?
24 hours ago, by Jitendra Vyas
@sidran32 I'm going to check my hdd with dell's tool
@GrahamWager I really should change mine... Have a very photogenic puppy :D
@GrahamWager OOOOH LONG JOHN
OOOOH LONG JOHNSN
OOOOOOOH DON PIAAAAAAAAAANO
WHHHYYYY I EYES YA
ALL THE LIVE LONG DAY
well I almost went tortoise...
15:55
that's my cat greeting for dogs
@allquixotic ROFL amazing
i decided to stick with the style of my default icon though...it appears to be up on a refresh...
@Sathya ... and never returned?
@HaydnWVN you seen that cat video? a drawing of that cat is my gravatar
@HaydnWVN conversation starts there, I think
15:57
@allquixotic yaaay cat guy :)
@HackToHell change your nuke to a cat. but not a hot chick, so you don't get creeper people
@HackToHell I'm confused. How is that related to the message you responded to? :D
@OliverSalzburg That's related to sandy, ignore what I replied to
@allquixotic :P ok
@HackToHell Oh ok.
next year, Ivy, a category 2 hurricane will hit Maryland
then in 2014, Haswell, a category 4 hurricane will hit Maryland
then in 2015, Skylake, a category 8 hurricane will hit Maryland
Moore's Law-ish exponential growth and Intel CPU names :3
15:59
Reminds me of day after tomorrow
@allquixotic how bad was it ?
@HackToHell Sandy? Weak. Coastal areas flooded and evacuated, but inland we were fine
@Sathya Did you get the hint what i was talking?
but if Intel is controlling the weather, in 2015 they'll send an 8-core hurricane at us with 8 eyes and 350 mph winds :S
not really
16:01
@Sathya I repeat
@Sathya I have a dell laptop purchased in March 2011, Dell warranty got expired in March 2012. Now from last 1 week my Laptop is making noise. I called to dell and they said that i will have to extend my warranty for another year which will take 9000 INR ( $185).
Dell guy was on phone call with me and he told me to check condition of HDD using a tool on boot. and that tool shows and error for HDD. I gave error number to dell guy and hel told that this error number mean my hdd is going to die soon and i should take backup my data
okay
I also checked my HDD with dell tool and it gave error "targeted read failed"
@GrahamWager The theory is that two out of four level 4 people have small dogs as their Gravatars, and no lie, not one minute after changing my Gravatar to this stupid looking dog I hit level 3.
Small dogs get teh upvotes ¬_¬
@JitendraVyas well looks like the hdd is failing
@r.tanner.f Ohhhh okay, guess I was a bit late to that party then...tho I guess mine's not as cute as most...
16:04
@sathya mail from Dell

Dear Jitendra,

Once you have purchased the warranty and if any other part let’s say if the HDD needs to be replaced in that case you will have to pay no extra money as you have just purchased the warranty.

Excluding the battery every hardware part are covered under warranty.

Regards,
Dinesh A
And when I asked that will they really replace place my HDD with no extra charge if i buy 1 year extended warranty in 10,000 INR
he replied

"As per the telephonic conversation with you and after doing the PSA we have found one error 0146, which indicates that there are some bad sectors on the HDD. However at this point in time HDD does not require any replacement. Bad sector are removed successfully by performing Debug followed by OSRI & drivers installation."
so all you have to do is run your HDD until it breaks and then they'll replace it
@allquixotic cat video? linkylink!
but since it isn't broken and just has bad sectors they won't replace it yet
that
@HaydnWVN first youtube search hit for "talking cat".... 28 seconds (?) and cat that looks like my gravatar
16:08
or run chkdsk so that bad sectors are marked so
@TomWijsman Are you around for a quick purchase!?
@WilliamHilsum you need belgium now? jeez ;p
@WilliamHilsum Yes, you'll need to send as I kind of emptied my account by buying a RPi.
@allquixotic haha... Europe
Not that picky! :)
@WilliamHilsum: I can do it from the website, right?
really needs Steam for Linux. xD
16:10
@sathya I have run chkdsk on ii from windows. which doesn't find any problem
@TomWijsman you signed up for beta, right?
@allquixotic Yeah.
/me puts up his Heavy Weapons Guy boxing gloves Me too... we're competing for a slot! :D
But Dell's own HDD tool is giving error "Target read test failed"
Take that! and this!
16:11
@TomWijsman should be able to - as long as you can get the daily deal (the club - 1.99 euro) and store it as a gift, you can give it back a lot later
I will happily transfer money first...
@JitendraVyas are you having any problems with day to day ops?
I spy, with my little eye!
No. but My Laptop is making noise from last 3-4 days
If it's make noise for that long a time, it possibly could not be your HDD
@allquixotic: Well, I do have a working Steam on Wine, just not applied a patch to support fonts in the Steam interface itself yet which is kind of funky. :P
16:12
here is the audio of noise www2.zshare.ma/o7lwhpheww13 will have to download the file
I ran scandisk in windows and after scanning "Windows successfully scanned the drive. No errors were found."
One more thing I noticed that. Where air comes out from laptop via fan. Pressure of air is low compare to past as i feel.
@WilliamHilsum: Okay, logged into Steam itself now.
I also checked my HDD with dell tool and it gave error "targeted read failed"
@WilliamHilsum: Don't sent me any messages on Steam, I have no clue whether a notification is you and I also can't find your name in the friend list since it only shows avatars. :P
@TomWijsman you could generate an md5sum of data from /dev/urandom, send him the md5sum in a private message in a chatroom (then remove it), then wait for the md5sum to come through on the other side :D
@TomWijsman no worries - if you just store it as a gift, I don't really care when you give it, as long as you remember to... I have barely played anything yet :/
16:16
@WilliamHilsum: What game?
@TomWijsman just to confirm, email hasn't changed since last time on paypal?
so @JitendraVyas grab the extended warranty & then tell them their tool is mentioning that hard disk failing and you don't want data loss
@WilliamHilsum Still the same.
@TomWijsman ok, paid
@WilliamHilsum: I can see the web page part of Steam, only need to know which game now.
16:17
@Sathya what's that ?
@JitendraVyas before you do anything else, I would suggest doing a full backup.
@Sathya yeah... I use outlook.com. I Like it a lot more over Gmail. Except I miss having the archive...
@Sathya So would it be better to extend warranty from Dell in $185 instead buying new hdd in $95 and replaced it myself?
16:19
@JitendraVyas depends, how comfortable are you with replacing a HD?
.... and how confident are you that something else (like CPU fan, since you mentioned that) won't fail? :D
Also, if you buy a HD you are going to get a 1 year manufacturers warranty... if you get the warranty HD from Dell then they will probably only cover it till the end of your current warranty...
@Joshua I can do that but then will my current HDD will be a waste?
@WilliamHilsum: Done.
@JitendraVyas if it is in the process of failing then it is going to die at some point...
it may happen in the next 30 secs, or it could happen in 3 years...
you just don't know...
16:23
Then is Dell trying to save money and put me in trouble because even they replied "However at this point in time HDD does not require any replacement. Bad sector are removed successfully by performing Debug followed by OSRI & drivers installation."
@JitendraVyas Dell doesn't really care about you, the bottom line is, they want to make money, and they are going to do that however they can...
Hard drives are so cheap these days, I would recommend just buying one and replacing it yourself.
But you will have to weigh the pros and cons...
but as long as you make sure you have a full back up before you do anything you should be okay.
what @Joshua said
Your data is more valuable then any hardware... no matter how you break it down. That is unless your data doesn't just consist of downloaded pron...
If that is the case then your data is worthless...
@JitendraVyas So they're just going to tell you "Yay you bought the warranty! Nope, you don't need a new drive! Thank you for choosing Dell."
16:27
@r.tanner.f until it breaks, basically yeah
well it's just the same thing as if you have a bad pixel on your LCD they won't replace it for one bad pixel
unless it's a certain amount of them
a bad sector is considered "minor"
OK but i'm curious can my HDD really be repaired? as dell said?
repaired? physically? no. but it can be configured so that software ignores the bad sectors that are currently there
@JitendraVyas If by "repaired" you mean taught to avoid the bad sectors, yeah
@TomWijsman Thank you
improper shut down (slamming of the read/write head onto the platters) is usually what causes bad sectors, so it is a physical damage...
Bob
Bob
16:29
@JourneymanGeek Added. Along with a almost complete rewrite, which broke a lot of things, so everything could be wrong (check please? :P) The old script is still available at stats.old.py
@Joshua slamming onto platters is instant drive death
most modern drives handle power loss relatively elegantly
@Bob wow.
improper shutdown doesn't lead to slamming of heads onto platters, it just causes them to park using the remaining inertia in the drive
@JourneymanGeek: Check the table at raspberrypi.rsdelivers.com/staticpages/pi/faq.aspx with the last 6 numbers you can check when your order is likely to be shipped I think, mine is in December.
Bob
Bob
at most, some damage to the heads (since they do tend to slam them to the sides)
@Bob not always, and yes they do, but there is always an exception.
16:31
they use the inertia of the HDD platters spinning as a flywheel and create energy to gracefully park the heads :D
I know, [citation needed] but i read it somewhere
Then to take backup i will have to buy 2 hDD. one to replace and another to take backup from current HDD
Bob
Bob
@Sathya it's wrong :P
@Bob Nice! Although I'm getting some weird results ;)
Bob
Bob
need to debug now.. sigh
use the old one
besides, whatever causes the bad sector, it is physical damage so without replacing the platter, it can't really be prepared...
Bob
Bob
16:32
most of the bugs left in the new one are in the filtering of q/a by user
gotta go... talk to ya later
@Sathya Another problem is I have key for windows ( came in laptop) but don;t have dvd
and it's OEM version, this key will not work on retail version of windows 7
dell can ship you a replacement OEM DVD I'm sure, for like $9 or $14

@allquixotic Nah, don't butt out ;) Doesn't hurt to be told twice
well why do we have to repeat the same thing to the same guy twice if the answer is the same... o_o
@r.tanner.f this link is giving error
@JitendraVyas works for me O_o

@JaredTritsch yeah, avoid it, because a lot of people here are from India :P

@JaredTritsch Hi. Your message was flagged.

@kaiser o_O wasn't me (again) wonder who flagged it this time
@The one who flagged this: Please explain, so I can set it to valid or stomp it. Thanks

I just think that, being a former call center manager, that things could be improved...
Ill delete it if someone unflags it.
Ok. Please avoid such comments in the future - all that you think that might be not fitting for a public chat that gets indexed by google.
And to the one who flagged: Please make sure you want to have action on this, as the flag will be raised system wide on all sites. Thanks.
Bye.
It was a poor attempt to be funny... My apologies to the group.
Is kaiser a mod? I'm confused.
Can i repair my HDD myself for time being? if yes then how?
@JitendraVyas Dell sounded like they would be willing to walk you through the steps for repairing it, they hinted at the steps in their email, you just have to ask for details
Bob

16:54
i'm sure they can provide you information on how to repair it without even buying a warranty
