@JourneymanGeek I can definitely learn a thing or two about humor. Perhaps I should try joking at least once per day?

Well, as noted before, forcing it is not the answer.
I'll just let it come naturally, but will try to use each opportunity as it appears (or not ;p).

@JourneymanGeek Savage af.

@MichaelFrank rawr?

It's like shutting down a puppy.

12:16 AM
shutting down a puppy is easy, just let them run, and they go into powersaving mode ;p

Not my MIL's dog.

they are not running enough then ;p

12:34 AM
I'll leave the comments to you.

Bob
oh hey I found @CircusCat's comments on superuser.com/questions/1029684/… :P

@bwDraco was that today's joke?

:P

Fried it.

someone had flagged it as VLQ instead of spam

uhm. Yeah. so. spam flagged, and nuked the account.
She's dead jim.

1:26 AM
this is a really interesting video about someone using a disassembler to bugfix an oooooold game

Oh, is that the GH3 one?

Bob
@JourneymanGeek I keep seeing that (it popped up on /r/programming too) but always when it's inconvenient to watch videos :P

@Bob This is why I have 150+ videos on my Watch Later list :P

1:38 AM
2 minutes in... "I found this chunk of stuff that IDA thought was data, but I know it's code because I'm good at reading assembly."

Good morning!
Here's something to bring you back from the dream world to reality:

This is a free online podcast about random tech topics and how it relates with real-world stuff like romance and other stuff and I totally recommend it: Reply All

this is hilarious and... clearly fake youtu.be/Ik_A8IkISS0?t=275
that's a 2-3 kg drone, and what looks like a 20kg dog

@JourneymanGeek what the hell

lol
1) that's a DJI phantom

@JourneymanGeek Also, the fact that you were watching a video with the the title "10 STUPID Things People Have Done with DRONES!" just screams "I NEED WORK I HAVE NOTHING TO DOOOOO" XD

@rahuldottech *headdesk*

hm. This is plausible

@bwDraco why'd you delete that?

The NFL doesn't have a rule requiring players to stand during the national anthem. The NBA does, but the rulebook does not specify a penalty. An NBA player was once suspended for refusing to stand for the anthem, an excessive punishment IMO.
Here's what the NBA rulebook (386 KB PDF) says (page 61):
> Players, coaches and trainers are to stand and line up in a dignified posture along the sidelines or on the foul line during the playing of the National Anthem.

OMG THIS PODCAST IS SO AWESOME

I really don't know what to say about whether players should be given a choice regarding what to do during the anthem. On one hand, players have a right to free speech and expression; on the other hand, good sportsmanship calls for respecting and honoring your country.

3:35 AM
Oh hey @rahuldottech, how was your exam?

@BenN Pretty ok. Have last one tomorrow (chem)

Very good. Get plenty of sleep :)

@BenN yep :)

I'm inclined to think that a player refusing to stand during the national anthem should be assessed a technical foul for unsportsmanlike conduct.

How is it unsportsmanlike though?
Its about showing respect. The clever thing about kneeling is... it does.

3:43 AM
@JourneymanGeek It's not, as far as I'm concerned.
It's a decent way to show disagreement or disapproval or disappointment
It could also be interpreted as a nod in recognition of the victims

Page 59 of same rulebook:
> To be unsportsmanlike is to act in a manner unbecoming to the image of professional basketball. It consists of acts of deceit, disrespect of officials and profanity. The penalty for such action is a technical foul. Repeated acts shall result in expulsion from the game and a minimum fine of $2,000.

hell, I don't see why it's been made into such a big deal

(also, to make up for the sheer dumbness of the video I just linked, youtube.com/watch?v=cfSIC8jwbQs )
@bwDraco how many times can one not stand out?

Stop talking about the method of protest, solve the reason which led to protest in the first place

@rahuldottech cause of the politics of divisiveness and distraction

3:46 AM
Bringing politics into professional sports is not exactly desirable.

@bwDraco Few people are on a stage where they can make a a statement and create an impact. Professional sports happens to be one such stage of sorts

Bringing reality TV into politics isn't entirely desirable....

People (especially minorities) have used international sport events to get their voice heard and draw attention to causes for decades, even centuries

and while its nice to think we can seperate politics and sports, didn't the romans say that politics was built on bread and circuses?

(I'm probably going to be excessively linking to this podcast for a week or two, please ignore)

@JourneymanGeek patriotism is big in the US

@Bob its a false equivilence tho

Marshal Kim Jong-Un vows to never stand during bombastic noise that is U.S. national anthem.
(parody NK official news account, but kinda hilarious and surprisingly real at the same time)

@JourneymanGeek That didn't make much sense. Use the !!/help command to learn more.

let's see if we can make a week
ideally I'd like to see a month+, but... baby steps :P

4:41 AM
Hooked up 20V source to USB load tester (which is within spec). Cranked up the amperage, unit was beeping at me with >35W! warning when the power exceeded the 35W rating. (While the unit is actively cooled, the 35W limit is probably a limitation of the underlying power MOSFET. I don't want my brand-new load tester to go up in flames.)
When a MOSFET overheats, it can experience thermal runaway which will cause the whole device to go up in flames.

1 hour later…
5:48 AM
On the load tester... The transistor is a Fairchild TIP122, which isn't even a MOSFET but a Darlington transistor. The microcontroller is a Holtek HT66F018 (why am I not surprised they're using Holtek?). An ON Semiconductor MC34063A powers the fan, up to 24V.
Soldering quality is rather poor, lots of flux left on the board.

1 hour later…

hi

Today is filled with messed up surprises

@rahuldottech offers hugs

@Avery hugs

6:58 AM
@rahuldottech hugs back

Unfortunately, the person who really needs hugs right now is not near me...

lmao

It's against US law for the POTUS to call for the firing of a private citizen.

18 U.S. Code § 227 – Wrongfully influencing a private entity’s employment decisions by a Member of Congress or an officer or employee of the legislative or executive branch:

(a) Whoever, being a covered government person, with the intent to influence, solely on the basis of partisan political affiliation, an employment decision or employment practice of any private entity—
(1) takes or withholds, or offers or threatens to take or withhold, an official act, or
Ehm. trump keeps doing this

he can self-pardon, so....

can he?

Does that refer to legally calling for the firing of a private citizen? Or for mouthing off about how someone should be fired?

well
pardons only work for criminal stuff I believe
not for personal stuff
so
I think that he could pardon the 18 U.S. Code § 227 thing but if citizen sued him then he wouldn't be able to legally pardon
IANAL.

8:59 AM
heh

man
@Avery any luck with upwork?

sadly, no
still have 10 open proposals though

@Avery I have 7
@Avery I hate posting like this upwork.com/jobs/_~01bf6488e13819bf95
Fixed price, but daily articles?
I don't get it

I love this

I've just seen el'reg thing about that bar on the iphone, lol wtf apple

9:07 AM
@djsmiley2k linky?
@Avery what even
They'll expect so much for such low amounts

I swear I have like no experience displayed on upwork so that I kinda need them and just keep sending proposals for like 10$ for an hour's worth of thing
and still no approvals

@Avery What really sucks is
Till date I've only gotten one job
Which was for $10, and the person was totally crazy
So I didn't get paid, because she just wanted more and more, beyond the scope of the project
And now my success rate is like 0%

Ugh

And all new jobs require "at least 90%"

Yesss

9:11 AM
So I'm thinking making a new profile might be the only option

As I have no experience it's same for me too
And like I don't get how people make a living from it

@Avery I think the key to success here is WordPress + Bootstrap +JQuery

And scrapers

I... don't know either very well

A lot of them

9:13 AM
@Avery I swear

And if I knew what they needed scraped I could see if I can get it done but egh nope

David Robinson on September 26, 2017

Software development is a global industry, and programmers everywhere rely on Stack Overflow to find solutions to their problems. But as we’ve analyzed before, different countries use different languages and technologies.

In this post we’ll take a look at German software developers, as seen by their Stack Overflow visits. We’ll see how the programming languages and technologies they use differ from the rest of the world, and how they differ within major cities in the country. All of these analyses are of 2017 year-to-date, from January to mid-September. …

It's just 'write a scraper'

@Avery Also, the pay offers for those suck

For which site? For what page? For what data?
I mean like

9:15 AM
"HURR I NEED TO GET URL FROM TRIVAGO CLICK ON MENU $5 I LEAVE GOOD RATING"
I don't get how they can even say that

I linked to github with relevant projects and sent images of previous projects and stuff and lowballed and did some of translation for free and stuff
Still nothing
Is it even possible to get a proper job on upwork

"I'll leave good ratings so you'll get jobs so work for me for stupidly low amounts" - like, if my work is good, you rate me anyway, where does this come in?
@Avery I know
@Avery I did too. Linked to existing work and then even wrote an article for free no, nup, nothing

Like if someone told me that those jobs are fake and are botted by upwork to get you to pay for premium so that you get more connects I'd believe them

Then there's this genius, asking for someone to install cPanel on AWS
Is that even a thing
And like... why?

It's possible
It's just not practical

9:18 AM
Yeah
Apparently they're starting a hosting service
Which is... IDK

Oh then hire an actual developer maybe

@Avery Oh and
SOOO many listings have this exact text:
This job was posted from a mobile device, so please pardon any typos or any missing details.
That I'm beginning to suspect some bot at work

Lol yup

Also, how the hell do I forgive "missing details"

It's added automatically by upwork mobile client

9:20 AM
@Avery seriously? LOL

@rahuldottech Ditto

Seems reasonable, but I'm under 18, and like have no professional resume or letters of recommendation
ALSO WTF
> - Require US Citizens/GC preferably.
Go die in a fire

@Avery good luck

not going any lower.

9:23 AM
@Avery Try for a 12
You'll get maybe 7.5 after upwork cuts its share if you put 10

eh
I get 8

13 gives you 10
@Avery eh

@rahuldottech legal issues

> Est. Budget: $8
GO DIE
Also, why do people post for on-site work on upwork?

@rahuldottech pls no hate

9:26 AM
Do you not understand freelancing?

Do you not?

Most consultants are free lance
they do their work
they go to a site
they leave agian.
Freelancing doesn't mean working remotely

@djsmiley2k upwork isn't like that

this is so bad
5 long documents for 9$

9:28 AM
> $9
runnn

ugh I'm doing it

> freelance
ˈfriːlɑːns/Submit
adjective
1.
self-employed and hired to work for different companies on particular assignments.
"a freelance journalist"
adverb
1.
earning one's living as a freelance.
"I work freelance from home"
noun
1.
a freelance worker.
2.
historical
a medieval mercenary.
verb
1.
earn one's living as a freelance.
"he freelanced for the BBC and regional companies"

will do 15 tho

@Avery worth a try

if they offering crap wage, they expect crap work, is all I can say

9:30 AM
I'm literally copy pastaing my cover letters at this point
it's not worth typing stuff over and over
@rahuldottech check this one out: upwork.com/jobs/_~019029f2a51df7aec6
> Java Script
> I need a java script for a case study. It should be compile.
> tag: JavaScript

@Avery why were you not previously o_O

@Avery $80 tho

@rahuldottech 80$ is not worth it when client can't tell java and javascript apart

Honestly, once they've been sent a couple of proposals, it isn't worth applying
@Avery "compile" >> Java

I should get someone to write a scraper for me

9:33 AM
And this is usually stuff you can pick off of SO

or rather a bot
to apply to jobs for me.
@djsmiley2k i copy-paste on translation ones and type on development ones

> Complete hotel booking script
> 50$

@Avery pffft
I copy paste for all jobs

@rahuldottech yeah lol I saw that on my feed

and just customise it slightly for those really special ones.

9:35 AM
@Avery this is the thing for the java one:
Write a java console application that allows the user to keep track of various items in a grocery
shop. The application must allow the user to read, validate, store, display, sort and search the item
name (String), item id (integer number), quantity of the item in-stock (integer number), factory
price (double number) and shop price (double number) for N items in the grocery shop. N should be
declared as a constant and it should be equal to the largest digit of your student id number (e.g. if
your ID number is S0234111 then N should be equal to 4 and you can declare it as final int N=4;).
Nah, too much work

yeah not worth 80$

that's the kinda code you copy nad paste from one you made earlier

@djsmiley2k well when I say "oh look I made this here is a link here's some examples pls hire me so I can modify it for your needs and license it to you" it feels better than "greetings, hey I know this and that and I think that I can do it fine I look forward to working with you"

@Avery never say I think I can do xyz

yes yes give us tips @djsmiley2k
c'mere @rahuldottech

9:37 AM
not sure if srs.
/me goes back to his job

@djsmiley2k I was

@Avery I don't do bash but take a look at upwork.com/jobs/_~01cceddfbed6615043
@djsmiley2k TELL USSS

is that the pi one

@Avery yep, the wifi thing

oh lol yup
I was going to tell you to apply to that

9:40 AM
@rahuldottech @rahuldottech mass apply to anything suitable. Don't bother customising anything, don't spend more than a few seconds on each application.

yeah whatever applying

That's how I got a job ;D

well...
If you do that you'll run out of connects.
in like 10 minutes or so.

Bob
@JourneymanGeek your favourite os superuser.com/questions/1082943/…
terribad question, worse answer

@Bob oh mah gawd
> download the Firewall

9:43 AM
kali is the best OS

WHY GUFW
JUST USE UFW
LIKE
UFW IS SIMPLIFYING IPTABLES ALREADY
IT'S SIMPLE AS HECK
UFW ALLOW <PORT>
THAT'S IT
I DON'T WANT TO SOUND ELITIST BUT IF YOU FIND THAT HARD YOU SHOULDN'T USE KALI PROBABLY
CORRECTION: NO ONE SHOULD USE KALI
ARCHSTRIKE FTW
there, a proper answer:
0
A: How to download the Firewall in Kali?

AveryWell, to install a "firewall" to kali, just install ufw, not gufw. ufw is easy to use anyways. Also, I strongly recommend you to NOT use kali as a daily OS as it's an OS designed for pentesting and not for daily use, especially due to the default profile being root and the security level not bei...

@Avery terrible site then.

@djsmiley2k yes

9:58 AM
@Bob asked May 31 '16 at 22:06
._.
@Avery will UFW install cleanly on kali?

@JourneymanGeek probably
then again >kali
idk

its possible its just broken as ****

if it doesn't suck (which it does), it should work

oh that it sucks is ... kinda without question

they shouldn't be using it full stop, sigh

10:00 AM
yes

and hah
I use a gui firewall configurator ._.
(on fedora)

psh you spoiled kids
I don't use a firewall

._.
New update to the Oneplus launcher I think

OK I lied

My cheese has been moved :(

10:02 AM
I have iptables installed
holy crap
how did I not know about manpages.ubuntu.com

it's COOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOL

it is?
you never googled for man pages?

I did
Don't remember opening that though

10:36 AM
lol and again I'm reminded why 'targeted' advertising doesn't work -- upwork is now showing in my adverts
this is after visting the site once, because someone else mentioned it.
I don't want to be a freelancer, I have no interest in becoming one, so the adverts are a complete waste of time.

11:26 AM
!!tumbleweed

Okay, need advice from folks who run websites
cc @Bob
right now my isp gives 516 kbps upload speed, 8 mbps down
They say that they can go up to a max of 3 mbps, 24 mbps down
But they give me a static IP for 20 USD a year
There's an alternative ISP though, which'll give me 50 mbps
But charge 100 USD for the static IP
And yes, I really need a static IP
So... is it worth it?
I mean, the guy literally just said that "ADSL tech doesn't support higher than 2.5 mbps uploads"

11:48 AM
Why do you 'really need' a static IP?
there's plenty of ways around dynamic IP's
tho if you're just hosting something, it's likely a lot cheaper to just rent a cheap server

@rahuldottech why do you not host on a vps

@Avery Because mum wouldn't pay
Also, I like having physical access

but she'd pay 100usd for static ip?

But she'll play for internet upgrade?
o_O

@Avery Probably, because the other ISP offers dirt cheap internet
Only static IP is expensive
So it'll pretty much equate out to the same cost overall

11:51 AM
Why you need static IP btw?

@djsmiley2k While accessing from school and stuff, when I cannot use a domain cuz crap firewall

you can't do a nslookup?

@djsmiley2k It's... complicated

lol i can tell

I usually carry around my WinToGo USB, and I configure FTP and SSH and stuff with the IP

11:52 AM
just trying to save you $100.

I'm looking at DynDNS right now, not sure about this stuff

I mean, depending what you want to do on the machine, I can get you a free account on a server...

same
