Broke a CFL (13W, 60W equiv, A15 type) while replacing it with a larger one (23W, 100W equiv, A21 type). Had to ventilate the room. epa.gov/cfl/cleaning-broken-cfl

Thankfully, this was the garage and not a living space.

Fluorescent lamps contain mercury. While the amount released is typically very low, prolonged exposure can cause adverse effects.

In our case, it was on the building foundation itself (since it happened in the garage) so the amount of mercury that would persist in the ground is probably low.

Why is this important? Because this is probably the first time a smartphone manufacturer other than Apple has decided to take storage performance seriously.

As I've said several times before, Apple's total vertical integration gives them an advantage that is virtually impossible for others to replicate. Consider that they have NVMe storage onboard the iPhone.

NVMe storage is expensive. An SoC manufacturer would have to implement an NVMe storage controller on the chip, a feature that adds significant cost and would not be used by many OEMs. Apple can get away with this because they have total vertical integration: they don't have to worry about whether OEMs will use all features on the chip because they design their own chips and can put exactly what they need and nothing more on the silicon.

Apple has been successful primarily because user experience is their top priority.

Historically, to the average non-technical consumer, Android had been almost unusable when compared to iOS until the introduction of Material Design in Android 5.0.

The S8 has it already...

(Not that it's mentioned anywhere, but UFS 2.1 only does 600 MB/s per lane, so that benchmark result implies it has at least two lanes.)

More disappointingly, UFS 2.0 has been available since 2014, but it did take up till 2016 before more android phones got onto the I/O bandwagon.

Then again, as a practical matter - I really don't notice the difference.
