Bob
...wtf is going on o.O

ur a star
Where did you go btw, I presume you weren't on a train

11:17 AM
Okay, wtf
This person posted asking for someone to create a JavaScript calculator of their specifications for USD 10
I agreed, and then they tell me that it's for a vaping website, which is 18+

javascript calculator can't be that hard...
ok?

@Rahul2001 ok?

you're writing code, not smoking the product

Meh, ok then
Not sure of the legality but eh

'OMG I CREATED THE ATOM BOMB. NOW I'M RESPOSIBLE FOR ALL THE DEATHS' - ! Richard Feynman

11:19 AM
yeah, sounds about right

@djsmiley2k that's oppenheimer ;p

It was Bhagavat Gita.

Richard Phillips Feynman was an American theoretical physicist known for his work in the path ... He assisted in the development of the atomic bomb during World War II and became known to a wide public in the 1980s as

@JourneymanGeek "! Richard Feyman" - ! is not, so what he's basically saying is that Richard Feynman didn't say it, someone else did

ty @Rahul2001 for understanding.

11:21 AM
;p

ah, Oppenheimer quoted the Gita ;p

@Rahul2001 m9

Bob
@djsmiley2k got home pretty late (via train), had dinner

> The Surgery Burger £15.00
Double stacked pattie, chargrilled buttermilk marinated chicken breast, cheese, crispy smoked streaky bacon, onion ring, lettuce, tomato, gherkin, burger sauce
drools

11:22 AM
nomnom

@djsmiley2k it was earnst rutherford

Bob
@Rahul2001 I'm curious where you find these people :P

One of those coding for cash sitesw?

no one for sysadmins :(

11:23 AM

@Burgi This at that burger place you linked before? with milkshakes?

Landed my first (so-called) job! \o/

@djsmiley2k don't think so

Bob
@Rahul2001 o.O

@Rahul2001 $10 seems too low

11:24 AM
oh, there IS :O
@Burgi javascript calculator?

yeah

should be example code online xD

@Burgi Meh, it's ok for my first job
The thing is...

Bob
looks like fiverr :P

They linked another website online and said they want something identical... And I can just copy the stuff from that site :P

11:26 AM
that happens a lot

@Rahul2001 that'd be naughty

be careful to change it enough to not be accused of theft

Bob

Urgent Requirement for Programming: C++, Java

This is a small program that needs to be done in Java and C++. Please reply if you are available.
totally not homework, trust me

@Burgi Yeah
@Bob lol

Bob
@Burgi or, you know, don't steal
it's alright to have something as basic as a calculator look the same :P

11:29 AM
nods

Bob
it's not theft copyright infringement unless you're literally copying the code
(or basing your code off theirs I suppose... though that's grey)

@djsmiley2k it's not like he's running though fields of wheat.

yeah....
I mean there's some nice stuff on there for someone who wants to admin loadso f machines
but I need something slightly more structured.

Bob
11:32 AM
these are rather amusing
@djsmiley2k freelancer jobs are rarely structured

@Bob Do you find this realistic? ^

Bob
@Rahul2001 access restricted

> Annual Maintenance Contract (AMC) for www.krupalu.com
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
1) Domain Name Renewal
2) VPS Hosting
3) Website Maintenance (Text/Image changes if any)
4) Dedicated IP
5) SSL Certificate (Any)
6) Email Technical Support (Google; Will provide admin login)
7) Website Scanner for Security against malware and web virus (Any)
8) Regular Backups

Note:

1. The cost for ALL above 8 things have been included in AMC amount of US $250.
2. AMC amount of $250 mentioned is for a year.

Bob
@Rahul2001 Uh. No, that's definitely a lowball offer.

@Bob Yeah. How much do you think I should counter for?

11:35 AM
its at least $250/mth

@Rahul2001 Hahaha

Bob
I mean. Just costs: domain name $15, VPS $120 (cheap-ish, no redundancy), IP comes with VPS, SSL free (letsencrypt), backups easy enough

they paying you $250, or think you can get a IP for $250?

Bob
But regular website maintenance is a huge pain (and big $$)
tech support is a huuuuuuuuuuuge pain
@djsmiley2k hm? The IP address is the (second?) easiest part of the lot :P

@Rahul2001 A sysadmin can expect a wage of at least £18k

11:37 AM
a junior sysadmin

Bob
the $250, for a student like you, honestly isn't so bad for setting up some of these things. but the website maintenance and tech support kills it.

^^
The experience of setting them up would be good
but that'd be the whole and total point of it
Regular backups to where?

Bob
@djsmiley2k a sysadmin would also be managing far more than one piddly website though

How large is the hosting?
@Bob Does this say it's piddly?
For all I know, it does the same traffic as netflix

Bob
@djsmiley2k www.krupalu.com
listed in the post :P

11:39 AM
It's not even loading.

slooooooooooooooooooooooow

Bob
lol
probably why they want this!
I loaded it a min ago

xD wow
I gave up, and went to try and register the url

where the hell is this server located? on mars?

Bob
lol wow. 158.69.247.25 it's hosted by OVH

11:40 AM
o_O

Bob
maybe on OVH's lowest-tier VPS...

I don't even
reverse proxy to someones backyard?
xD

Bob
@djsmiley2k anyway, I refreshed and lost it, but it was a pretty basic company services kind of page

@Bob EWEBGURU.COM

Bob
maybe 5-10 pages of content
@Burgi o.O

11:42 AM
thats who hosts it

Bob
@Burgi how'd you find that?
I did the standard lookups... hm

@Bob huh, so they don't need all that they've listed?

whois

I think I can come up with something decent

look at the nameservers

Bob
11:42 AM
@Rahul2001 yes they do...

they could be a reseller for OVH

Bob
@Burgi oh, right, the ns
@Burgi lol their own website is horribly slow too
> 99.9% uptime guarantee

@Bob Meh, I can host it on my own server, cut the VPS costs
Was the website this?
https://web.archive.org/web/20160415025115/http://krupalu.com/index.php

@Rahul2001 so they would get hosting for free....

Bob
@Rahul2001 yea that's the one

11:44 AM
Meh, I'd charge 200/month

Bob
@Burgi I think their idea is the $250 is meant to cover hosting :P
They wanted to pay $250/*year*

yes

@Burgi If I charge 200/month, it seems decent enough?

@Rahul2001 only if they have no tech support issues

Q: Tripwire to read audit logs to find out if user who modified file is allowed

enrmCan I make tripwire only report on specific users changing a file? The issue is that i want to monitor a file that is being changed regularly but I only want notifications for any user (group) who is not allowed to change it. I can't believe there is no information on this anywhere. Has someone ...

well that's the most stupid question of the day.

11:45 AM
are they expecting 24/7 support?

The system returned: (110) Connection timed out

Bob
the page looks like a dreamweaver-designed thing or summat...

:381583 aND THE ip?

Bob
@Burgi keep in mind the country though

wHAT'S THE sla?

11:47 AM
but the tech support could end up as multiple requests a day and eat into his profit

Bob
@djsmiley2k SLA? At $250/yr for all that crap? You're joking, right? :P
@Burgi Yea, the maintenance and tech support I'd be iffy about cause it's incredibly vague
The others can be quoted for

No, I'm pointing out that it's a bad idea

Bob
But you can't really flat-rate tech support

$200/mth but limit them to 8 hours of support per month with no rollovers

we charge by ticket here
they bulk buy X tickets, each one over is charged extra.

Bob
11:49 AM
Yea, support credits/tickets works. Alternatively support hours.

Hi. Let me just start with this, your offer is unrealistic. Really so. No professional will be willing to do it for you for such a low price. My co-workers call your offer ridiculous.

Let's just break costs down:
Domain Name: USD 20/year
VPS: $120 (cheap-ish, no redundancy)/year
Dedicated/proper SSL: USD 200/year [https://ssl.comodo.com/]

That's 350 USD in just preliminary costs, excluding any of my work and time.

Your current website doesn't even load properly.

However, I think I have an offer for you, which should work perfectly. I have analysed your website and needs, and this is my
@bob I'm sending this to them

Bob
Honestly? the domain name, hosting, IP, SSL and backups I'd say $30/month min. it's not that much time spent.
The others would not be included though

seems ok?

@Rahul2001 take out the bit were you host it

Bob
@Rahul2001 lol "cheap-ish, no redundancy" ain't professional :D

11:51 AM
you REALLY do not want the responsibility

@Burgi Okay

Bob
you are kinda suggesting that you'll be giving them a Comodo cert though

@Bob I will, comes free with cpanel XD

Bob
o.O

Well, cpanel is owned by comodo

Bob
11:53 AM
"dedicated support" that sounds ... iffy
like. they can call you at any time of the day iffy.
don't you have school?
also, do you know where these guys are? what if they need support at 2am your local time?

India, I think
T

@Bob This

@Bob Hm, "I'll offer you support where I'll get back to you within 8 hours?"

Bob
keep in mind what you are capable of

@Bob @Rahul2001 their current hosting provider offers a VPS for $100/year

Bob
11:54 AM
@Burgi their current hosting provider is dogshit

@Rahul2001 that's not how a SLA works...
How often do you want them to call you every 5 minutes?

Meh, they're getting what's reasonable for their money

what if they call you every hour, for a 32 hour period?
Yeah I agree
but you need to set it out clearly what you're offering, if you're serious about it

Bob
@Burgi $125 USD/yr actually

11:56 AM
@djsmiley2k okay

@Rahul2001 And when do they pay?

Bob
@djsmiley2k Yea, @Rahul2001, do what @djsmiley2k said and set out some number of included support requests.

and are you old enough to do this?

i only converted to GBP and didn't tweak for USD

@Bob okay

Bob
11:56 AM
@Burgi I just guessed $120/yr off the top of my head tbh :P

@djsmiley2k through upwork, they get charged before the job, I get the cash after it's done

Bob
but looking at their lowest-tier VPS
yea an OVH lowest-tier VPS beats that
by a good margin
O_O OVH redirects to .com.au now

you don't know what else they are hanging off the back of this VPS

wtf CPU runs at 1.12 GHz
I wanna know :P
@Burgi presumably just the website
and it can't be worse than their current host :P

12:00 PM
@Rahul2001 tho, if its a single domain, letsencrypt is fine. Also comodo is evil

Bob
@Burgi That's Itanium.

@JourneymanGeek Yeah well, I'm not paying comodo anything, I hate them too

you wanted to know which CPU ran at that speed

I wouldn't mention the provider

12:01 PM
@Bob That seems ok? ^
@JourneymanGeek okay

Bob
@Rahul2001 I'd say specify it's email support

okay

Bob
@JourneymanGeek If @Rahul2001 is actually using Comodo, mentioning them is fine. As long as you can provide.
But they did specify VPS and dedicated IP.
Are you going to provide that?

yup
@Bob his breakdown does have that.

Bob
@JourneymanGeek Yes, but he's also suggested he'll host it on his current host.
Which is shared hosting IIRC.

12:03 PM
@Bob I'm not offering a dedicated IP or VPS, I've specified that

also, eh, does sound a bit bad when you go " No professional will be willing to do it for you for such a low price. My co-workers call your offer ridiculous"

:/

"I don't think you can get the level of reliability and service you need on your budget. However - I'd like to suggest a better alternative"

Bob
@Rahul2001 heh. honestly that's not expensive :P
under 50 USD for a year on an OVH VPS, which includes the IP addr

@Bob Okay, then, offering VPS too

Bob
12:07 PM
but it's entirely up to you
you likely won't be able to use the Comodo cert there
and you won't have cpanel

Hm, okay, I'll talk to them about it
Okay, I need to get back to my first job now :P
@Bob @JourneymanGeek @Burgi Thanks for all the help!

12:30 PM
roar
@FaheemMitha: Try running bootutil64e -up=combo -all -file=/usr/local/src/Intel_Network_Card_Boot_Utility/APPS/Bo‌otUtil/BootIMG.FLB‌.
The Combo image won't lose the PXE functionality, but I don't know if your network adapter supports it.
Also, the answer you posted should be edited into the question instead.
The measage you're getting indicates that this firmware image provides PXE functionality, and is being overwritten with a firmware that provides EFI functionality. You may be able to include both; try -up=combo.

1:06 PM
@bwDraco Ok, I'll check what the docs say. And I think a transcript really belongs as a (supplemental) answer. Do you disagree?
@bwDraco I'm guessing it doesn't support this combo functionality. I get:
> Updating PXE+EFI removes EFI functionality.

@Rahul2001 no worries

@FaheemMitha As I commented, I disagree. As it stands it doesn't answer the question. Answer need to be self contained and not commentaries on the question or another answer.

@FaheemMitha It works. You'll get both. It just means you're replacing the EFI-only firmware.
@FaheemMitha That information should be used to expand the question. Answers are just that.

1:22 PM
@DavidPostill It's a walkthrough of how to get the desired result. I think it's useful. It's not a "commentary" on anything.
If someone happens on this question/answer in a year or two, they can see exactly what someone else did to get there.
And "Answer need to be self contained". Citation, please. I've seen many supplemental answers over the years. I've written a few myself.
What does "self contained" mean, anyway?
I though the main point of SE was to provide useful and helpful information. Which is what I'm trying to do here.
I could consider my question solved, and exit stage left. But that's not what I'm doing here.
@bwDraco Oh, are you sure? Ok, I'll give it a try.
@bwDraco You were right. Thank you.

Thanks for expanding your answer post into an actual attempt to answer the question.
Also, your question made it to Hot Network Questions, congratulations!

1:52 PM
i am so sleepy

2:10 PM
ffs

2:24 PM
O/ Got the new 12.9" iPad Pro :)

@allquixotic cool!

the on-screen keyboard and the physical keyboard cover are both awesome, as is the Pencil, the dynamic 30 - 60 - 120 Hz display (depending on what you're doing), and even the battery life is fantastic

Honestly, it's not my thing, but good for you!

but I say "fantastic battery life" comparing it to the iPhone 7 Plus (battery life was bad when I got it and has gotten worse over a year), and also comparing it to Core U/H series laptops which generally don't have great battery life with a couple of exceptions
especially H laptops are generally around half as durable as the iPad's battery

I am so envious.

2:27 PM
@FaheemMitha literally, you don't want to read something else to get the answer

Not an iOS fan, but I really need to find a job soon.

as an iOS fan who wasn't 2 years ago, you basically have to buy into the ecosystem and get at least two Apple devices to really appreciate how well they integrate / how poorly most other manufacturers' devices don't integrate
perhaps the runner-up on integration would be Microsoft? If you go full stack Microsoft with all their latest devices?

The real problem is that openness and tight integration are mutually exclusive. I'm more on the openness side of things.

never been impressed by Samsung's integration; each of their devices is a fortress that talks to nothing else, with the exception of their Android Wear watches obviously :P

Feb 12 '16 at 2:03, by bwDraco
Sadly, "vertical integration" and "open platform" are mutually exclusive in practice and so Android will never match iOS in efficiency...

2:29 PM
@Rahul2001 what did i miss?

The same holds for horizontal integration.

@bwDraco Thank you for your help.

@Burgi you online?

yes?

(deleting in 5...4...3..)

2:31 PM
i just had a mini crisis meeting

this iPad Smart Keyboard might be my favorite keyboard of all time for just plain QWERTY typing, though... obviously not as good for programming as it's missing Home/End, PgUp/PgDn and a number pad, but it's got this awesome rubbery feel to it, no gaps between the keys and the back (the entire surface of the keyboard is rubberized), and very quick response time

@Rahul2001 is that the one you've made?

@Burgi Indeed

I would like a full-fat laptop with a keyboard this good... throw in a TrackPoint or a good (with superior palm rejection!) trackpad, and I'd snap it up in a heartbeat

@Burgi modified from an open source one

2:33 PM
cool

IKR!?

you need to have a warning when you approach the lethal dose

Bob
@Rahul2001 don't forget to credit source as per licence

@allquixotic I just wish more PC manufacturers (who are not Microsoft, the Surface family is fantastic) paid more attention to hardware quality and UX.

@Bob will do

2:36 PM
> This mix is not feasible. You may need to lower your target nic, VG or PG content, or flavoring. Alternatively, use a stronger nic base liquid, or a nic base liquid with a different VG/PG ratio. Please adjust your settings until all numbers are greater than zero. Your target nicotine level is higher than your nicotine base strength. You should either get a stronger nic base liquid, or lower your target nic strength.

@Burgi Don't ask me, idk much about vaping, ffs

the lethal dose of nicotine is 60mg per kilo

@bwDraco Agreed.

@FaheemMitha So... is your system booting in UEFI mode?
If so, be sure to click the check below the voting controls to accept the answer so that we know it solved your problem.

3:01 PM
@Rahul2001 e-cig I think

@jokerdino yeh

3:22 PM
The person keeps making me do redesign
Wtf I'm getting paid 10 USD

@Rahul2001 Uh oh. Help Vampire alert

@DavidPostill yes, apparently

@Rahul2001 thats the problem with the vague briefs you have been picking
too much scope for feature creep

@Burgi heh yeah

On the other hand, for a $10 job you are unlikely to get a detailed spec ...

3:35 PM
true

@bwDraco Unfortunately, no. When I turn off that compat mode, it just comes back to the BIOS. Or whatever it's called.
However, it's not showing that error about the network card any more.

@FaheemMitha That means the OS is not set up to boot in UEFI native mode. At that point, you'll need to reconfigure or reinstall the OS to enable UEFI support. Is there an EFI System Partition?
The UEFI problem with the network adapter is solved, though.

@bwDraco I was just trying to boot a CD. The Debian installer CD.
My install is definitely not set up to boot in UEFI mode, and I wasn't expecting it to.

What version?

When I switch to UEFI mode, the only thing that I see is the CD drive.

3:45 PM
Okay...

@bwDraco What version of Debian? The upcoming stable. Stretch.

If it's Debian 9, there's no reason for it to not support UEFI.

I think it should be able to boot in UEFI mode. I just asked a question about it on U&L, and requested and received screenshots.
@bwDraco Agreed.
In any case, I'll accept your answer, since my MB flakiness is probably a whole separate issue.
I actually don't understand what the compat mode (CSM?) is saying. Here's an example:
Boot from Storage Device (and the options follow):
Both, Legacy OpROM first
Both, UEFI first
Legacy OpROM first
UEFI driver first
Ignore
What's the difference between Both, UEFI first and EFI driver first?

@FaheemMitha latter just loads UEFI

@FaheemMitha Enables the CSM, but determines whether you want to give priority to UEFI booting or legacy mode.
The system can be set up to enable the CSM but still provide the UEFI services.

3:53 PM
I'm not sure I follow.

"Legacy OpROM" refers to legacy BIOS option ROM booting (needed if you have devices that don't support UEFI, not any more :P)

@bwDraco Yes, I got that.

> Both, Legacy OpROM first

So both Both, UEFI first and EFI driver first enable CSM?

Enables both UEFI and legacy BIOS (CSM) booting but tries to use the CSM first.

3:54 PM
and give priority to UEFI? If so, what's the difference?

@FaheemMitha The latter does not.

^

@bwDraco Oh.

Bob
@FaheemMitha EFI driver probably refers to actual hardware drivers.

@Bob huh. That's confusing.

Bob
3:55 PM
Like, you can load drivers for storage devices that the firmware doesn't natively support.

I just tried disabling CSM entirely. And then nothing happened. I expected the CD to boot, at least.

Bob
@FaheemMitha Think Windows device drivers en.wikipedia.org/wiki/…
EFI driver first means load a driver for unrecognised hardware, then continue

@FaheemMitha Okay. You're getting this because the card has been flashed to support both EFI and legacy booting.

@Bob Yes, Linux has device drivers too.

@Rahul2001 did you take a look at that test?

Bob
3:56 PM
As for EFI-booting Debian, there's a few ways.

11
A: Computer refuses to boot in UEFI mode - gives error about Intel Gigabit network card

bwDracoThe problem here is that your network adapter's firmware, or option ROM, does not support UEFI. An add-on card can have its own executable code for use in the preboot environment. The VBIOS on a graphics card, used to initialize the GPU and display at boot time, is an example of such an option ...

Bob
IIRC the default is via grub-efi. I'm not a fan of it personally.
I like to use EFIstub.
@bwDraco I'm explaining an option he asked about. I'm aware of the history, and it's not directly relevant here.

@bwDraco If it supports both, why can't it use UEFI though?

Bob
@FaheemMitha If you have an existing grub-pc install, you would need to install grub-efi correctly.

You can. You're basically selecting priority.

Bob
3:58 PM
Some instructions here wiki.debian.org/GrubEFIReinstall
FYI Debian Live does not support EFI boot either.
Debian installer does though.

@Bob Hmm. Ok. we're still talking about the Debian installer, right?

If CSM is enabled, you can tell it to use the legacy option ROM, UEFI drivers, or both (with an option to give priority to either one). That's what those menu options are for.

Bob
@FaheemMitha nono, switching grub-pc for grub-efi would be done on already installed systems.
@bwDraco Wrong.

My understanding is that it checks whether it's booting in UEFI or Legacy mode, and then proceeds to load the grub-efi thingy.

Bob
"UEFI drivers" are not the same thing as UEFI bootloaders.

3:59 PM
10 mins ago, by Faheem Mitha
Boot from Storage Device (and the options follow):
Both, Legacy OpROM first
Both, UEFI first
Legacy OpROM first
UEFI driver first
Ignore

Bob
UEFI bootloaders are ... bootloaders. UEFI drivers are drivers.

@Bob Ah. As of this moment, I'm just trying to boot the installer.

Bob
They're different things.

We're not talking about the bootloader.
