Something to note on my upcoming Astaroth desktop: Due to a severe shortage of midrange graphics cards caused by high demand for Ethereum mining, I'm forced to specify a more advanced graphics card than originally intended. This will mean a higher budget is necessary.
I sure hope I do not have to spend the $700+ on a GTX 1080 Ti because I had no other choice.
Hopefully, the GTX 1080 (non-Ti) will remain available for the next few months at a somewhat sane price.
I am not amused at the possibility of needing to order now as insurance against a future price hike or unavailability.

A: How do I install an SSD drive that comes without a casing in a desktop computer?

bwDracoThis is an mSATA SSD. To install a drive like this on a system without an mSATA slot, you'll need an mSATA to SATA 2.5" adapter. This StarTech unit was the best I could find from a cursory search on Google. Do not confuse this with the M.2 form factor, which is narrower and (usually) longer. M....

Accepted in less than 30 minutes.

cool

it's a good answer.

Should I migrate this question to SuperUser? Or, should I just close it and let it rot where it fell?

Q: 3.5mm 'IR' output to USB HID input - Does such a device exist?

mhouston100In my media cabinet I have a HDMI matrix that does IR output over a 3.5mm jack to an emitter. In the same cabinet I have multiple PC's with IR to USB HID receivers to translate to keypresses. This seems like an necessary step going to and from IR in the middle, I'm curious if there exists a devi...

@NickAlexeev "does X exist" questions are marginally better than blurry pictures and "plz what is this connector"; I personally wouldn't mind it, though I don't have an answer
the entire situation with "multiple computers" acting as remote control receivers of some sort (?) sounds like a WTF infrastructure setup though

i doubt the encoding of the signal is any kind of standard...

like those people who print something, then scan it, then fax it, then print it again, take a picture of it...

I've sent it over. Let's see how it does on SuperUser.

2:45 AM
we have a roving band of people who close anything they don't know the answer to, so if it gets closed don't blame me, but I think it's fine, if niche

@bwDraco On a different note, anything that uses 18650 batteries is not going to do well during zombie apocalypse.

@NickAlexeev why not?

@allquixotic It's a relatively uncommon battery format, compared to, say AA. Once you run out: that's it.

@NickAlexeev solar or wind energy source + 18650 cell charger should last a while; anything involving batteries is going to be pretty short-lived post-apocalypse though because we assume manufacturing facilities for these things will no longer be in operation
depends on the severity of the apocalypse and your ability to get to areas with degrees of civilization/organization, I guess
but I mean, a fresh 18650 cell will last several years with moderate duty cycle as in a flashlight
as long as you don't drain it dead every time between charges
most advanced manmade artifacts would be worthless within 5-10 years, absent the ability to manufacture new, functioning devices from raw materials -- and that includes the vast majority of non-food items produced today, since nearly everything has integrated circuits in it

I have standardized by outdoor gear (lights, GPS, camera) to AA batteries. I can have the benefits of recharging with AAs too.

2:50 AM
hardened ICs could last 20 years, maybe 30, but physical damage / humidity will eventually kill most things...
even things we think of as super long lived electronics based components, like aircraft carriers, fighters, satellites, etc. -- in most cases -- have either unusually high-grade components and multiple backup systems, or -- more likely -- they simply get worked on and gradually repaired by human beings putting new stuff in them over time :P

FWIW, an unused IC can last a few decades in sealed packaging. (I work in the semiconductor biz.)

Anyway, that's just semantics; we could debate all day the degree to which someone could be prepared with extremely high-grade, super-sealed, super-resilient technology at their fingertips, ready at a moment's notice for an apocalyptic event with 30-50 years of flawlessly humming along modern technology powered by solar; but I don't have that and I don't think bwDraco does either
99.99999...(several more?)% of stuff produced today with ICs will be dead in a decade
talking about electronics and stuff involving electronics in general
consumer dreck
if you live next to an 18650 cell factory, you'll want to have an 18650 flashlight :P

Hello!

@NickAlexeev I have a USB solar charger, USB-powered 18650 charger, and a AA flashlight as fallback.

Anyway, classes starting, goodbye...

Bob
@allquixotic in a decade? naw.
I've still got TVs, monitors, heck PCs, from well over a decade ago
A decade ago was only 2007, after all
maybe 50% failure rate, if we're guessing randomly. but 99.9x? nah.
@NickAlexeev My 18650s last much longer on a single charge, though :P

I also have a Nitecore Tube on my keychain.

3:27 AM
wow this sucks
I'm trying to copy all the files we're meant to copy each night
because so far the devs haven't sorted out the proper solution...
by hand, I can copy so much the machine runs outta memory :/

yeah :/
This server is major suck

Bob
@djsmiley2k ... I don't think that's how file copies are supposed to work...

So, what flashlights do you have?

Bob
@bwDraco ...working ones?
I've never really cared much for brand
they do the job

3:32 AM
Yeah.

Bob
I think most are Convoy, fairly floody, single-cell.

> Shenzhen Convoy Electronics Co., Ltd.
> Shenzhen
So much stuff comes from Shenzhen...

@Bob indeed
I'm like well that explains why people are having so much trouble
it's actually closing the rdp session on me too :(
I've never killed anything via file copies before o_O
2Gb server.... win 10

4:05 AM
wait, only 2 GiB of RAM on a Windows 10 server?
whoever thought that was a good idea needs to be told that we're no longer in 2001

Bob
@djsmiley2k ...oh, RDP. use drive sharing, not plain copy/paste
@allquixotic 2 GB RAM on servers is pretty common

yup
that's what I was doing @bob
well, drive share from my desktop onto the server
but from the server I have to use network drive to access the tills...
@allquixotic it whats happens when you're dealing with utter cheapskates :/

How the hell is SMB this memory-intensive?

Bob
it's not [supposed to be]

Bob
4:10 AM
@djsmiley2k how much available memory do you actually have?

I duno, the whole thing is weird.
errr total

Bob
take a screenshot of the performance/RAM tab

or actual avaible?

This 2 GB laptop has an active SMB share and I've never seen memory cause problems when I move files from one system to another over the network.

erm
I no longer can

Bob
4:11 AM
@djsmiley2k ??

because task manager isn't loading the tabs anymore xD

WTF?

i'll reconnect ;D
now I got a protocol error
I think ib roke the server, again xD

##/ultraheaddesk

4:12 AM
indeed.
twice in one night, good going, even for me ;D

Bob
that's the important info
what does yours say

nothing. Protocol error xD
think I killed it.

Bob
you know what I think is going on?
you probably have either no page for or a too-small page file

yah quite possibly

Also, is virtual memory compression enabled?

4:14 AM
in avaiable
it said 2Gb before

Bob
what happens then is even if your physical RAM has 'free' space Windows won't overcommit

Enable-MMAgent -mc -pc

Bob
and some programs start crashing
@bwDraco that's a minor thing. like, really really minor.

@Bob sounds like what I saw.
Anyway I can't get back on the server now ;D

Well, gotta get to bed. Can't stay for much longer.

4:16 AM
5:15am

Bob
also if you don't have a high enough commit limit then compression won't help

2 hr ish to go
just less than.

...and this mSATA SSD question just hit HNQ.
Every bit what I expected.

Bob
it should be using uncompressed size to calculate commit limits
compression helps with performance (less paging, more cache) but not with limits (which require a large enough page file)

these are super interesting to me. :) I've been spending a lot of time trying to learn electronics concepts of late

4:28 AM
yawn
tonight hasn't been too bad
but i just hope today doesn't get as hot as yesterday

Bob
@allquixotic just wait till you see a MCCB :P
@djsmiley2k it's a nice cool 18ºC here :P

my cpu was reading 64c yesterday
normally it's in the high 40's
:/

64 c for a CPU is fine, IMO
not even hot enough to decrease its longevity significantly

4:45 AM
nod
but just shows how hot that room was D:

Bob
@allquixotic not 64 idle

5:10 AM
it was 100% on one (of 6) cores
because chrome/twitch

5:51 AM
Yoooohoooooo

nearly home time \o/
8 minutes!

@djsmiley2k -_- lucky

lol
end of a night shift

ah rite
well, I'm sitting in skool and dyin'
Quick server side validation cheat sheet. Check (for) the following:
- Input length
- HTML/special characters
- Unicode support
- Javascript: inline/SVG/etc

Bob
@rahuldottech yes, no, no, no
if you escape things properly, you should never need to check for specific characters

6:20 AM
though, I'd say
- length
- escaping
- Unicode support

Bob
@JourneymanGeek first reaction: \o/, second reaction: meh, third reaction: \o/

6:36 AM
lol
why meh?

6:52 AM

Bob
@JourneymanGeek first \o/ cause I needed it, meh cause I forgot why I needed it, second \o/ because I thought of a possible use

7:55 AM
hello

wetagg.in will expire soon :(

Bob
@OliverSalzburg ?

The domain is about to expire

Bob
@OliverSalzburg what's it do?

And, woah, I got a Nice Question on SG! serverfault.com/questions/859652/…
@Bob Should be self-explaining :D

Bob
8:04 AM
and can't you just renew it?
@OliverSalzburg not really

It renders stuff as tags

Bob
I see ... a list of tags

@Bob Sure, but why? :D It was mostly for fun
There was a sale on .in domains or something
So I got it and now it will soon be gone

Bob
o.O

It does interact with the SE API though

8:13 AM
@OliverSalzburg it is buggy -> c# gives only c related stuff, c%23 is needed for c#

Hi everybody, is there any way to request a merge of two answers?

@satibel Oh noes! O_O
@satibel Submit a PR ;D github.com/oliversalzburg/tag.this
Actually, please don't :P

Q: Found a heap of BTC, No documentation, what do I do?

SomeGuyMany years ago, I had bought and stored around 400 BTC, for a few hundred dollars(?). Shortly after that, I lost this hard drive, wrote it off as an "Oh well" and didn't think anything more of it. Last week I found it. And according to google, it's worth around $1,000,000 USD. I would like th...

8:35 AM
@Seth no

I put it on meta as question, might be interesting for others as well. Though it's likely some kind of edge case.

9:00 AM
The case is so rare, nobody is interested :P
I would just edit-merge them and flag the "old" post for deletion. Then deal with backlash if there is any

9:14 AM
I feel so evil

9:32 AM
@satibel Very funny, but how exactly did you do that redirect?

@DavidPostill Double-check the domain

@DavidPostill it's a fake URL.
Yea, what Oliver said.

Ah. LOL

Hahahaha. It's not Saturday yet :)

9:37 AM
@DavidPostill phishing 101

Deadmau5 has a cat?
More than one cat?

That's how you turn a mau5 into a deadmau5

@NotDog why do you think it's Dead maus? :p

why does this question have two close votes and why is it still considered that it might be a duplicate? superuser.com/questions/712183/…

I was just about to ask if there was something like whois for IPv6. And, yes, there is. It's whois :P

deary me

I am now starting an IPv6 problem analysis with our ISP. This can only go wrong

@Rahul2001 ignore my terrible grammar

10:35 AM
@Burgi no problemz

ugh...
i use auto hide on the startbar but sometimes it gets stuck
anyone know how to unstick the startbar?

find what's sticking it

i've alt-tabbed to everything

@Burgi Restart Explorer

@OliverSalzburg yeah i was going to do that
do you think this would be a good SU question?

10:46 AM
@Burgi In theory yes
I expect bad answers though
Or maybe a glorious one that finally solves this mystery
This issue is what finally drove me to giving up auto-hide on the taskbar

@Burgi It gets stuck when it's hidden or showing?
@Burgi Windows 10?

@DavidPostill Stuck when not hidden... probably.
I get the same thing on Win10 on occasion.

notification maybe

11:04 AM
I like this.

@Avery So do I :D

wholesome tools are always welcome in my book.

I like how it completed without errors

I would close your apps one by one and see which one is causing it.

11:18 AM
@Avery btw, I'm wondering what it says if it doesn't complete successfully? does it swear?

@Burgi That Outlook envelope is always a red flag ;P

its not outlook
brb
fixed it with restarting explorer
:(

Bob
@Burgi It's usually Skype :P
Sometimes Firefox doesn't sit on top properly. Minimising/maximising works (click twice on the taskbar icon)

11:33 AM
@Bob btw, skype did a netscape. (got rewritten from scratch)

Bob
@satibel huhwha?
you mean the UWP one?
oh, I got the updated one on Android a bit ago. it's ... got terrible flows

@Bob yes that one.

12:31 PM
@Burgi nice, open till midnight.

12:49 PM
Any windows Wizards here?
I have a Windows Server 2008 with an Active Directory on it. In the Active Directory and Users console I want to add a custom column for an attribute so I can show when my users last logged in. I found the attribute in the attribute editor and it's called "lastLogon". I wen to a step by step process to add it to the configuration settings under CN=Default.Display "extraColumns". But it won't show up for me to add to my view in the Active directory and Users console
I also tried setting the setting in the "organizationalUnit-Display" -> "extraColumns" instead
but no dice
