11:00 AM
Now I'm at the lawyer's office again.

what does he want exactly?

well that's reversed for some reason.

@satibel to quote him "To make you beg for forgiveness, to ruin the children's lives and not let them be successful, to cripple you and make sure that you end up living on the streets"

well, he can at most mildly annoy you if you go out of india, so #2 is moot, #4 is also moot if you can take care of her. She just needs to be careful of #3.

How can he get out of india though

11:05 AM
though, I know some people who could take care of the problem for 5k$. (sorry for dark humor.)
@Avery find a job which offers relocation.

@satibel when he's 16?

in 2 years.

he can just get his dad off his life in 2 years?
Also no country ever will accept work visa application from someone without a degree
The whole point of work visa and relocation is "hey we can't find enough qualified people here so we'll hire someone from abroad"
and it's hard to argue that jobs that don't require degrees need qualified people, at least with old people who are in charge of the countries.
if you were to ask me, I'd go full open borders, baby.

@Avery +1 that.

@Rahul2001 telegram

11:09 AM
@Avery alas, that's both one of the tools that is used to control people, and its a less practical idea than one things.

@JourneymanGeek hm?

@Avery well, border controls are a tool states use to control their current and future populations
and unchecked immegration would probably empty out some countries and others will end up with too many people

you can get a student visa for studies (Visa de long séjour pour etudes in France).

@satibel needs $$$ unless you get a scholarship

@JourneymanGeek I forget that in France it's cheap.

11:12 AM
@satibel if you're french
or presumably from one of their old colonies, cause the french are really nice to their former posessions

@JourneymanGeek true
but if a place is shit, why should you be stuck in it?
people live in middle of desert ffs

hmm Why am I here again? ;p

@JourneymanGeek or if you're from europe.

@satibel ah yeah

Most countries [that I checked] offer cheaper or free education to people from that country or state.

11:14 AM
yup

If you want to study abroad, though, then you're going to have five or six digits to spare

Q: Windows script for now hours of your HardDrive

ArcanneI want to do a script that check the hours of run of the HardDrive to prevent losing information. Is there a way to do that? I have checked on internet but i cant find any batch command. Thanks for the help ! (PS: Sorry for my bad english.)

what

they're trying to view smart data of "Power_On_Hours"
though that has nothing to do with data loss

Bob
@Avery I guessed that. The misconception is... ugh.

11:19 AM
What really matters is Wear_Leveling_Count
or Total_LBAs_Written

relocations, and failed relocations

Bob
@Avery Only for SSDs. And that's incredibly unreliable too.
Reallocated sectors and pending sectors for HDDs.
Which is also a useless predictor; it shows you after a drive has failed.

yup

yup
true fix is backups, but we already know that
well, if a drive Starts relocating you know it's going
how quickly it progresses is anyones guess

Bob
@djsmiley2k It's just as likely that half the drive becomes inaccessible at the same time it 'starts' relocating.

11:22 AM
yup

if you've got an intel ssd, you're set, once it gets an error, it puts itself in read only mode, then kills itself on next power cycle.

what
that sounds stupid af

@satibel lol

eh
multiple backups
One is none ;)

you're all lazy
I have no backups.
If my SSD dies, I'll reinstall and recode everything and anything.
it might take years, but I'm not lazy like you

11:30 AM
@Avery I scienced automated the (post consumer food) the heck out of it.

muahahaha

(veeam endpoint out to a single disk nas, that gets synced back to my desktop)
one of my servers is backed up the same way
@Avery tbh, I'm more worried about the stuff I downloaded ages ago

@Avery that's actually useful in large raid setups.

@Avery online on telegram

@satibel yus but normally it's the raid controller which decides 'this disk is fubar, lets not use it'

11:42 AM
heh, once we get the synapse homeserver network a little more settled, we ought to get you guys accounts for stuff like this

rather than the disk itself going 'I hate life!'
what's synapse homeserver network?
/me runs a jabberererer server for everyone \O/

@djsmiley2k chat thing kinda like IRC but more modern and persistant
people run their own servers that can federate like jabber

@djsmiley2k well the disk ensures it's data integrity. THE DATA WAS NOT CORRECT, I'LL 切腹

@satibel I can understand read only, but self destruct?

@Avery I'm trying to find excuses, ok? :p

11:49 AM
also
did someone say steam sales?
still best video on youtube ever.

fail
@Avery so it's that video.

I need to get a punching bag. Desperately.

@Rahul2001 hugs > punches.

@satibel the disk does not understand data

@Avery hugging bag o/

12:01 PM
@satibel those are called pillows

Lol

"may also alleviate lower back pain when placed between the legs during sleep periods." needs one

I'd get a gaben one printed
but it'd be all squished up

12:05 PM
XD

we need a new form factor for dakimakuras for strong, big-boned men like him

in the french wikipedia for bolster there's "usage: pillow fight".

@Bob lol. I answered it anyway just because I knew how to do it :)

Wow
Everyone is fighting at home

:(

12:16 PM
hug

So no AD domain rename today either. More frustrating support experiences instead
Apparently, O365 not working is all my fault for not waiting up to 72 hours for everything to synchronize
When I asked how and where I can check if synchronization is complete, I was told that "It works when it's complete and if it doesn't work after 72 hours then it's an issue"

I can't deal with any more crap
I'm getting out of here

Additionally, I was informed that when the system tells me that I am not an administrator, even though I am a member of a group that is a member of the administrators group, that that doesn't make me an Administrator in the eye of all O365 components
The only way to make sure is to be a direct member of the group
So I added myself as a direct member of the group, and that surprisingly didn't change anything
The tech told me that that is likely due to, you guessed it, synchronization not being finished yet

At this point I just want to enter a deep sleep for a month or something

I disagreed

12:24 PM
@OliverSalzburg wtf

@Rahul2001 That is a nice summary of recent developments ;D

@Rahul2001 shutdown /h

I also just received two emails in my O365 account. Which is extremely surprising because none of the domains have an MX that point to O365

@OliverSalzburg great way to check stuff, I'll use it when my program has a bug.

the cheeky bugger

12:28 PM
@satibel It was all BS anyway. Whenever I made any changes, they seemed to sync with Exchange almost instantly. Something I could easily check with another admin account. My account is the only one causing problems
But they ran "some check" on my account and it came up clean

the electrician who was meant to be doing the safety inspection has said no-one was in!

And because I changed my email address since then, I apparently fucked up "the check"

@OliverSalzburg XD

It's really annoying to deal with people who just follow a script but have no deeper understanding of the subject than you do
It's all a strategic game where you have to nudge them a little bit every time until they finally escalate to the people who have a clue
And you have to find the pressure point

@OliverSalzburg after a bit you know the script, and can tell them the answers already.

12:32 PM
If you're like "OMG I'm never going to buy or recommend this crap to anyone!", they're like "So what?" But if you tell them "This is not a 10/10 rating on your ticket for me", they'll help :P
Well, they try to help from the start, but their way of helping isn't helpful to me :(

FUCKING HELL WHAT
Now my school wants to send me for a competition

"I get no access to the internet, the right light is orange, I already did check the modem is ok, I already rebooted the router 3 times."
-ok, we 're running our checks, please wait.
[5 minutes later]
-there's a problem on our side, the whole sector is affected.

Where we're only allowed to use Turbo C++
ARE YOU KIDDING ME

@Rahul2001 0_0

WHAT IS THIS

12:36 PM
Weren't you complaining you guys used that in school?

Yeah

I don't think that makes sense, but at least they are consistantly illogical

int main(void)
{
    asm {
        //code
    }
}
@Rahul2001 how to do it.

lol, assuming turbo c++ will let you inline asm

@JourneymanGeek doesn't it?

12:39 PM
I don't think all IDEs/compilers do

http://digiassn.blogspot.fr/2006/04/asmc-using-inline-asm-for-video.html
seems like it does, but you need TASM.

gerritI need to run Skype for Business on Linux, and my current approach is to install this apk through the Android SDK Manager (the same solution I use for Whatsapp). I need to run Skype for Business on Linux, and my current approach is to install this apk through the Android SDK Manager
wat
@satibel turbo asm?

@djsmiley2k someone tell him to install genymotion

@djsmiley2k yes.

And the arm translator

12:44 PM
@Avery or just Skype for Linux? :D

@djsmiley2k SfB has no linux binaries.

anbox seems nice, though I haven't used it extensively.

D:
i thougth they released some by now?
stop using skype \o/
pfft

@djsmiley2k I did since my account was banned x)
dat guy XD

ugh
@satibel doesn't work on non-ubuntu
@satibel I am now a truck

Bob
12:59 PM
@DavidPostill The difficulty is not in the doing, but rather the pointlessness of it (see: XY question) :\

@Bob Which I explained in my answer ...

@satibel well you're doing it wrong. Take this for an example: pronoun.is/she

think so
I'm not really fond of abuse of pronouns (not in the bad sense- I respect every serious pronoun change), but pronoun.is kind of exploitable

I don't mind people who want other to use different pronouns, but 1) if it's the first time meeting them and they throw a tantrum when I used the wrong pronoun while not knowing, I'm probably not going to like them, and 2) why so many? xkcd.com/927

Hi guys. My class for the day is over. Just one day more of class left. The organisers are telling me I did extremely well. The students are all keen to learn more. I could not have asked for a more perfect class of coders.
Sorry for telling them all about this room. I just wanted to tell them about SO/Python and while we were on stackexchange, showed them around.
SU is a real centerpiece for SE

@Nick it was the timing I suppose
(This place does have a pretty strong sense of community, and people talking about pretty personal stuff. I think it would be cool though to go "Hey, I might use this in a class, roughly around foo IST")

lol

1:32 PM
And I'll be a little honest here

we could always have a channel where we have some topics to deliberately discuss, for that reason...

Yeah, it was unexpected. I was planning this for days. Most of them didn't even know what IRC was!

rather than bringing pupils in here, which might be a bit.... unwieldy

If I end up doing classes on hardware maintenance, I might reference SU and RA a little

@Nick Did any know BBS or Gopher?

1:33 PM
@djsmiley2k splitting rooms seldom ends well

@Avery it'd not be a 'real' split
it'd be a fake room basically for someone to show off as an example?
if we knew we would have 'visitors at XX:YYpm'
we make sure we discuss something useful there
tho tbh just show students the questions and answers part

@djsmiley2k I know BBSes, but Gopher?

@Avery it's ollllllllld
The Gopher protocol is a TCP/IP application layer protocol designed for distributing, searching, and retrieving documents over the Internet. The Gopher protocol was strongly oriented towards a menu-document design and presented an alternative to the World Wide Web in its early stages, but ultimately Hypertext Transfer Protocol (HTTP) became the dominant protocol. The Gopher ecosystem is often regarded as the effective predecessor of the World Wide Web. The protocol was invented by a team led by Mark P. McCahill at the University of Minnesota. It offers some features not natively supported by the...

I know gopher.
it's that cute little squirrel looking thing, right?

ok
Google Map Hyperlapse is a bit..... spooky
that's the first time anythings spooked me out lol

1:40 PM
@djsmiley2k Most didn't even know there browsers beside Chrome, FF and Opera
I had to teach them GK about who runs which company. :/

@Nick do any of the other ones matter?
and opera is basically a reskinned chrome these days
(as is vivaldi, which I actually run now)

@JourneymanGeek Nightly, Neon, Torch and Canary matter

canary and nightly are chrome
neon... is interesting. But mostly a toy

FF nightly. Chromium is also chrome but it's also interesting.

avant browser and lunascape are quite interesting too.
though a reskin wouldn't hurt them.

1:50 PM
ok so... it turns out because i was the person who reported the fault with the oven they didn't need to inspect mine...
GRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR!!!!!

@Nick what are they studying?
I'd say it doesn't matter unless they are web designers..

@Burgi people inspecting your oven... that sounds dirty. x)

my boss's boss was asking "why do we need AV if we all have macs"

run away screaming
Actually, no, fair enough question

not really

2:00 PM
@djsmiley2k I was about to say

as Apple now actively advertise that as a plus of OSX, and really, it's a terrible advert and false.
So well done to @Burgi for having a sensible boss's boss.

no no you misunderstand

lolololol
the desk is currently spending 2.5 hrs each night, copying some files.
I'm like.... wut
script that.
INSTANT PROMOTION.

my boss's boss was trying to NOT pay for AV software

That's his job tho
But the point is, he asked.
he scores extra points if he actually listens.
and the Jackpot if he then overhauls the whole infra because it's terrible and dangerous

2:09 PM
I once explained to someone what that thing called ClamAV is doing on their server. It ended in me explaining why you "need AV on a Linux server"

That's from an interior room in an enormous building! AT&T Microcells coating the customer building... Verizon, Sprint and T-Mobile get no LTE or marginal speeds at best in these areas
Cc @NotDog and @Bob

Bob
o.O
yea uh
our LTE is faster than our wired connections -_-

It's basically a cellular worst case if you needed cellular from a tower outside the building - the room has no windows, is in the middle of a multi story building with thick walls, no line of sight to outside for many many meters of solid objects, etc.
But the microcells are amazing :D
Our wired is much faster though

Bob
2:25 PM
@allquixotic microcells/picocells don't work too well without good wired :P

@Bob dedibox ordered

Bob
@JourneymanGeek \o/
I guess you want me to stop the mailspam? :P

I guess

Now I need to decide whether I want to keep the old one
also how I want to set this up
kiiiinda tempted to go with the bare metal or container route here

o_)O

Bob
@JourneymanGeek CONTAINER! :D

COmpanies still use dreytek?!

Bob
ZFS!
cmon you know you want to :D
zfs + container (cow) = :D

2:31 PM
:O

@Bob I probably actually have the ram for ZFS....
but eh, I actually want to go for as simple a build as possible

Bob
@JourneymanGeek I'm running zfs on the dedibox :P
it doesn't need much RAM
especially with a 250 GB SSD
@JourneymanGeek it's nice for backups though
zfs send lxc/containers/blah | gzip > backup.zfs.gz

probably going veeam on this

Bob
also snapshots
zfs snapshot lxd/containers/blah@20170620
instant snapshots with no space taken (well until cow)

WOAH!!!!
i think the neighbours washing machine is broken
it sounded like it was coming through the wall

Bob
@Rahul2001 nah, it'll stop when the calendar events pass :P

@Bob yeah ;p
Unless they're getting their times from the internet
In which case you could carry out some complicated spoofery to mess up the times

you could set up a non-calendar related loop

@Burgi That too, bit it'll be tough to get them to say each other's names

maybe
my girlfriend is coming over but i just steam saled up... :S

4:36 PM
@Burgi aw

@Burgi So no steamy night in with the GF?

@DavidPostill its certainly hot enough

Has anyone watched Airport (1970)?

4:54 PM
@Nick can you give some more detail?

@noɥʇʎԀʎzɐɹƆ I wouldn't go there. It's only going to end up with you getting frustrated. He isn't one to learn.

In other news, does anyone know of any command-line tool that lets you invoke arbitrary DLL functions with arbitrary arguments? People think rundll32 does that, but it doesn't, so I was considering writing a little tool that actually does
