Bob
12:05 AM
morning

12:16 AM
Hi!

also I like how anyone didn't take that first message out of context.

@ThatREDACTEDGuy aren't you meant to be on holiday?

12:39 AM
.... another actor from b5 passed away - Stephen Furst. Maybe I care about the show too much but dang a LOT of actors from that show passed on

2 hours later…
2:53 AM
... there's a lecturer with the same first name as me here. This is gonna get confusing
I don't want to jinx it but things usually get busier by jow

Bob
@JourneymanGeek JourneymanProfessor? :P

3:13 AM
Lol
Also. Internet was out in the main office. Walked in. Everything works.
.. clearly magic geek skills...

@Avery lol
@ThatREDACTEDGuy BECAUSE I ALWAYS DO
@Avery ;p

4:10 AM
and... I fixed someone's wireless keyboard by turning it of and on again....

@JourneymanGeek I got a call out to a site 60km away yesterday for an EFTPOS terminal that was 'faulty'... Turns out it just needed to be plugged back into the wall.
4

ended up being a 2 1/2 hour round trip.

So far today, two intermittant network issues on the other side that fixed themselves and the keyboard
I;m only at 6km and 9.5K steps

@JourneymanGeek how do you walk so much... Does your work span over several buildings or something?

4:19 AM
yup
3 buildings about 10-15 minutes walk apart

I dreamt about getting rep on SU last night... ihavenoidea
@JourneymanGeek ah, coool

less dreaming, more doing
in theory its me and my boss. In practice, I'm often not at my desk

Q: GitHub satanically messing with my README

MD XFMy GitHub repository has nothing but a readme in it. In this readme, locally I wrote this: Factoids: - There are about six different ways to do everything in Forked. - There are actually six different ways to enter loops. - There are six directionals and six I/O commands. - 666. ha. Emphas...

hm. How did my housekeys turn up in my pocket....

2 hours later…
6:33 AM
hello
@JourneymanGeek A dog with pockets, how convenient.

6:46 AM
@Burgi Hmmm... No.
@Burgi Why would I be?

I realized "how convenient." sounds sarcastic, maybe I should've used another phrasing.
@ThatREDACTEDGuy he he "sex"

@satibel Yeah I found it funny... When I was eleven.

hmm, not good
I set up stuff for one of the rented classrooms as usual and 1) its locked 2) with my equipment inside.

@JourneymanGeek No, spontaneously waking up at 3:40 AM is indeed NOT GOOD.

@JourneymanGeek 3)

6:55 AM
tempting but no

What does a dentist has to do with anything? :P

lock picking kit
I just got the keys from the cleaner and got them out.

7:23 AM
@JourneymanGeek no fun :p

7:50 AM
Is there a silent mode or meeting mode?
On Android 5 I could select those. "Do not disturb until"...
Here I only see this mode.
I could enable only calls with vibration during meeting.
Could easily switch between silent mode and meeting mode.

I think you can set it via the callendar.
or get the top menu (swipe down from the top), and you should have a do not disturb button.

Can't see it...

@Boris_yo the arrow on sound maybe?

Morning

mine has it left to the phone status.

8:02 AM
@satibel Yes, it's almost what I was looking for. I just hoped there is quick access to that. Widget would be good... In Android 5 you just press Volume Down and select mode you need.

user226528
Argh. Those guys on Ars Technica are dumb. They disagree with me when in fact, they have been agreeing with me all along.

oh?

user226528
Oh!

user226528
Or maybe "oh?" means "give me a link"...

user226528
Anyway, Peter Bright wrote: "For desktop Windows, everyone is on the Semi-annual Channel except Software Assurance customers. They get access to Windows 10 LTSB builds." implying that enterprise customers don't have access to the semi-annual channel and don't get feature updates for Windows 10 twice per year.

user226528
8:12 AM
I commented that he is wrong; SA customers can install Windows 10 Enterprise, which does get the feature updates like Creators Update and such, and that I was behind one already.

user226528
Dumb guy. He says "I don't even begin to understand. I said that SA customers have access to LTSB builds. You quote from Microsoft some text saying that... SA customers get access to LTSB builds."

user226528
Well, hello! My disagreement wasn't over LTSB at all.

Bob
@FleetCommand Eh. I read that as "they get access to LTSB in additional to ..."
But even then the statement isn't quite right. "the semi-annual channel" is oversimplifying CB and CBB.

user226528
@Bob He wrote "except". That means they don't.

Bob
@FleetCommand I read that as "they're not guaranteed to be on "the semi-annual channel" unlike everyone else"
But I do see how it can be interpreted the other way.

user226528
8:17 AM
@Bob Well, that's even more wrong. Only SA and VDA licensors get to be on the CB or CBB.

Bob
@FleetCommand "Everyone must be on the semi-annual channel except SA who [additionally] have access to LTSB"?
*shrug*
(except in reality anyone not on Home can be on CBB)

user226528
I tend to read it as:
"For desktop Windows, everyone is on the Semi-annual Channel except Software Assurance customers. They get access to Windows 10 LTSB builds [instead]."

Bob
@FleetCommand Yea, I think the sentence is just vague enough to be interpreted either way. Can't say for sure which one the author intended.

its soooooo hot

@Burgi In UK?

8:21 AM
yeah :(

user226528
@Bob Unlike you, Bright never even defended himself that way. He tried to erase the semi-annual matter from the question.

user226528
The problem is moving to LTSB or away from it requires uninstalling one edition of Windows and installing another.

@Burgi Why sad? Must be sunny there. Go walk outside. Go swim at the beach.

hm, our master baker is walking around with a small bucket ._.

8:28 AM
@Boris_yo stuck in work
also the beach is 60 miles away
england isn't built for insanely hot temperatures

25 minutes to my official end of day

Bob
@FleetCommand ah

8:44 AM
@Burgi 46 here, beat that

@Burgi 26 is insanely hot? How about 35? Now that's insanely hot. No, insanely hot is in India.
^
@Rahul2001 Your endurance must be higher than Burgi's?

its all relative

Heat tolerance

india and israel are both close to the equator and you expect them to be hot
you don't expect the UK to be in the high 20s

@Burgi tropic of cancer passes through India, that's not "close to the equator", we just get affected worse by climate change
And climate change isn't localised

8:49 AM
closer to the equator than say london

But still halfway between the equator and the North pole

Moe anthropomorphism (萌え擬人化, moe gijinka) is a form of anthropomorphism in anime and manga where moe qualities are given to non-human beings, objects, concepts, or phenomena. In addition to moe features, moe anthropomorphisms are also characterized by their accessories, which serve to emphasize their original forms before anthropomorphosis. The characters here, usually in a kind of cosplay, are drawn to represent an inanimate object or popular consumer product. Part of the humor of this personification comes from the personality ascribed to the character (often satirical) and the sheer arbitrariness...

@Rahul2001 As in °C?

@satibel what?

Hi there, I think I could use some pointers...

8:54 AM
> you expect them to be hot

@Vogel612 👉👉👉👉👉

A server I'm administrating seems to be under attack right now...

@Vogel612 the bars over there and its your round

In the logs there is a failed auth attempt every few seconds since 5AM yesterday

@Vogel612 int *

8:55 AM
unplug it

@OliverSalzburg yes

@Burgi not really an option :/

@Vogel612 fail2ban?

@Rahul2001 Wow. I will never complain about heat again :P

how do I implement that for Windows?

8:55 AM
@OliverSalzburg yeah well. I'm sitting in a car (which is basically a greenhouse) without air conditioning and I think I'm going to melt into a puddle soon

btw. I love your clippy. How did that get into here?

@Vogel612 It's one of the chat easter eggs

@Vogel612 easter egg added in by the devs

Q: Does fail2ban do Windows?

nurikabeCan anyone recommend a fail2ban-like tool for a Windows OS? I've got a couple of Windows Media servers that get hammered with brute force authentication attempts. I would like to plug these authentication failures into some kind of blocking tool.

@Rahul2001 :D

8:57 AM
@Burgi I WAS ABOUT TO LINK THAT
we're hiveminding.

you've taught me well, boss

@Vogel612 Are you even certain it's coming from outside? It might just as well be a budged scheduled task thingie
If you're certain it's from outside, then the way to prevent that on a Windows server is to block the suspect's IP address on your Linux-based firewall that you have in front of your Windows server ;P

Man, I've been wanting a Raspberry Pi for like 4 years, but I can't even afford that wail

Alternatively, the Windows firewall

i was about to suggest blocking the IP at the physical firewall level

9:02 AM
@OliverSalzburg no I'm not 100%, but I'm reasonably sure... The event log says the authentication comes over network. The usernames change, it's been going on since 5AM yesterday, ....
@OliverSalzburg for that I'd need to actually extract an IP address :/

Bob
@Vogel612 are they real usernames?
I'd also question why the server is publicly exposed on a port that accepts auth.
RDP?

@Vogel612 For remote logon events, I have a Network Information: section in the event

Administrator, User2, User1, Admin ...
it's guesses
@OliverSalzburg sure, unfortunately that's pretty empty

@OliverSalzburg not fun, trust me

Bob
@Vogel612 so, just a random brute force attempt. ignore it. you have nice long passwords right?

9:06 AM
@Bob nice yes, long ... at least long-ish

Bob
random brute force attempts happen all the time

Q: Security Log in Event Viewer does not store IPs

kmarks2I'd like to write a service that pulls Event Viewer records, specifically from the Security log. Of particular interest to me are things like event id 4625 (audit fail) messages. Ideally I'd like to store the IP of clients that cause audit fails more than n times in m seconds for some amount o...

Bob
if you want to be safer, don't publicly expose the RDP port. set up a VPN with client certificates for remote access.
trying to block these attempts is pointless

@Vogel612 I dunno, I just assumed that server's OS to be linux.

@Bob Well I don't control the network the server is in, soo ...
the joy of hosting contractors :)
Thanks for the help, all :)

Bob
9:09 AM
@Vogel612 eh. make sure your passwords are at least 12chars and aren't reused anywhere

why is RDC/RDP open to all IPs?

Bob
you'll be fine

@Burgi because I can't put an IP onto expected clients

Bob
(password managers help here :))

@Vogel612 That question I just posted was meant for you

9:11 AM
they may change location and our ISP is free to change the IP as necessary
@OliverSalzburg I noticed, thanks :)

Bob
yea don't try blocking IPs

ah no worries

Bob
if they're using botnets and you have dynamic IPs you might end up blocking yourself

port knocking is a pretty good deterrent to random attacks.

Bob
@JourneymanGeek Serenity has performed with Within Temptation :P

An old laptop and a Raspberry Pi will be more or less at par as webservers? (Just for personal use)

@Rahul2001 depends how old.
laptop:
+native battery
+sata
+x86
- power consumption
- size

Rpi:
+gpio
+size
+power consumption
+screw mount
- no native sata
- might need a heatsink.

Bob
@Rahul2001 equally terrible, yes :P
if it's anything more than static files
laptop specs?
also, any reason you want to home-host?
Dreams of Sanity is an awesome band name

@Rahul2001 I heard thousands of people die of heat because there is no sufficient air conditioning in India. True/False?

i think it is the poor sanitation in india that is the bigger killer

9:30 AM
@Burgi Heat melts my brain... It affects my mental capabilities... Can hardly focus...

9:40 AM
We should fight global warming with more air conditioning. Seems logical

9:52 AM
a laptop (upgraded with ssd and 8gb ram) works well enough for a small-medium site.

user226528
10:06 AM
I keep seeing software companies use the terms "Enterprise E5" and "Enterprise E3" in their product documentations. What are these?

are they options on AWS?

user226528
Lots of Google results are for Windows and Office 365, so, it is more like Azure.

they must be O365 sales options

user226528
Okay, I think I was mistaken when I said "software companies". Intel has a CPU line called E3.

10:10 AM
@FleetCommand this has nothing to do with microsoft E5

user226528
@satibel No. It doesn't. I just learned that. But you gotta admit, there was no way to know this is a coincident.

also, E3

user226528
LOL

user226528
So, basically, it seems Intel just loves odd numbers, so its CPUs are E3, E5, E7, i3, i5, i7 and soon, i9.
But Microsoft did have E2 and E4 but they were dropped. And Microsoft has E1 too. These codes just mean "Enterprise, plan 1", etc.

@FleetCommand isn't that a bmw?

10:17 AM
@Bob 5th gen i5, 8gb ram, but the whole case/body is broken and a new one cannot be found... So I'm trying to find alternative uses for it

@Rahul2001 welcome to the club.

ah no, its an i8
@Rahul2001 make a new case

@Boris_yo not really true. More of malnutrition and stuff
@Burgi cannot, really

why not?

Because... No 3d printer
3d printing is also expensive here. And I don't really have much use for another laptop
@Bob why so?
Also... What if I was to... *cough* use it with a certain anonymous network who's name contains a terrible vegetable?

Bob
10:28 AM
@Rahul2001 should be fine as a webserver then
@Rahul2001 was thinking you meant early c2d-gen. also rpi CPU still sucks. most 'proper' webapps are both CPU and RAM hungry (moreso CPU for PHP and RAM for Java)
5th gen i5 isn't really old in my book
...heck, it's newer than my laptop

Q: Help me find my girlfriend!

TheThirdMageAll right... I admit it, I'm not great at puzzles. Someone kidnapped my girlfriend, but they left me a ransom message. I obviously don't have a million dollars, and I'm scared.. You seem to know what you're doing, though... can you folks help? Please... I need your help. (The note is the only ...

user226528
ROFLCOPTER!

@Bob it's actually newer than my main laptop too ;p
@Bob on that note... I don't suppose I can swap out a laptop's and expect everything to work perfectly?

user226528
Does one million dollars fit in an envelope? I always thought one needs a marquee for it.

10:44 AM
@FleetCommand Depends on the country the dollars are from

@Rahul2001 use wood

user226528
@OliverSalzburg Aha? Elucidate please.

Zimbabwe has hyper-inflation, 1 million dollars is piddly small change

user226528
Clearly not the case here. The guy implied $1M in his case is big, big, big money.

10:47 AM
@Burgi hah, I was thinking of doing so, but then I won't carry it around...

@FleetCommand Also, it's all fictional

the largest denomination note in regular service in a sensible currency is the 500€ note

user226528
@OliverSalzburg (Sigh!) Alright. Correcting to: Clearly not the case here. The guy implied $1M in his fictional case is big, big, big money.

i got paid in cash with a single €500 note for a freelance job once

user226528
Anyway, I have a bigger ghoti to fry.

Bob
10:56 AM
@Rahul2001 a laptop's what?

@Bob CPU

Bob
@Rahul2001 oh. depends, really...
some laptops are socketed
most are soldered now
and even with the socketed ones, Intel changes the socket every other generation
(or is it just plain every gen? idk for laptops)

@Bob :/

Bob
@Rahul2001 do you have a specific model number for those CPUs?

@Bob I'll be able to tell you in a couple of days when I'm back home

11:13 AM
@Rahul2001 A broken one for a replacement or a different one altogether?

@OliverSalzburg altogether, but never mind that

which model is it? (e.g. i5 3210m )

11:34 AM
34 mins ago, by Rahul2001
@Bob I'll be able to tell you in a couple of days when I'm back home

@ThatREDACTEDGuy Why do you use numbers for the days of the week in Brazil?

11:46 AM
omg... just got a support email back from vaultpress

Samsung's support reply to my question on how to find out which Android version OTA update will update to:
Thank you for contacting Samsung Support Services; we are honored to have the opportunity of assisting you.

Regarding your query, you are kindly requested to go through the user manual to check the requested function, however if you still seek any further help then we would request you to kindly visit your nearest service center. You can call 0800-Samsung (72678) and ask them for the location and contact details of your nearest service center.
Useless...

Hell yeah! I managed to straighten out bent USB 3 pins (The extra ones at the back of the male end) with just two bent safety pins!

> we are honored to have the opportunity of assisting you
That goes right into our service desk autoresponse template

12:04 PM
Are frames in websites still frowned upon? ;p

@Rahul2001 Yes, iframes not so much though

Meh, I'll just use backend includes ;p

I noticed the other day, that that Google notification menu is an iframe
That thing

Hmm

Q: Why are iframes considered dangerous and a security risk?

Daniel T.Why are iframes considered dangerous and a security risk? Can someone describe an example of a case where it can be used maliciously?

@OliverSalzburg @Rahul2001

@DavidPostill I'm just going to be using it to display content from my own domain...
> As soon as you're displaying content from another domain, you're basically trusting that domain not to serve-up malware.
> There's nothing wrong with iframes per se. If you control the content of the iframe, they're perfectly safe.
That sounds like an old wives tale. Your browser window is basically just one big iframe. — Bill Criswell Sep 2 '11 at 21:00

12:10 PM
@DavidPostill That is ancient information in web terms

1
A: Can using an Iframe pose a security risk?

BazzaDPAlthough iFrames are, in theory, loaded securely in their own environment, there are several security issues with them including: They can be used for ClickJacking attacks. For example a site loads another website in an iframe and then floats username and password text boxes on top of the ifram...

iframe was revised in HTML5

@OliverSalzburg That's just over half of all websites - what about the other half?

12:16 PM
@DavidPostill I mean they changed how iframe works (or can work). People still think of it as "that bad think you should never use" from the past, when it actually is an excellent tool for isolation nowadays
It's just a topic you're likely to get bad information on

@OliverSalzburg indeed

12:33 PM
@XKCD NO NO NO I WANT THE GOOD XKCD COMICS BACK!

all embedded youtube videos are iframes

WTF IS THIS
The client I made the calculator for is mad at me for leaving a link to the open source project I used in an HTML comment
@Burgi Do you know how I can deal with this?

12:48 PM
move the attribution link to the JS

@Burgi Meh, I've removed it altogether. I'm not going to get into trouble, the client is
I tried to explain that "is how Open Source works" and that it is "Common programmer courtesy"

other than that, shrug and move on. you got paid $10, did they expect a fully custom solution?

@Burgi No, they haven't paid yet, that's the problem
Is there a workplace question on this?

probably
i would have put it in the JS
don't sweat too much about it

@Burgi hm, I just left an HTML comment at the top of the page

12:53 PM
too obvious
should have put it in at the very bottom or put it in the JS somewhere

@Burgi Yeah, understood ;p

they are paying $10, walk away

@Burgi I can't afford to get a terrible review on my first job on the site
*faceplam* they don't know how to use WYSIWIG
I sent them the HTML code, they're unable to embed it

not your problem
they only asked for a calculator, which you delivered
they didn't ask for help integrating it into their website

@Burgi They said in advance that it must be "embedable in shopify"
I checked and made sure that there's a widget to embed HTML
@Burgi How do you propose I say that to them?

1:01 PM
"if you need help integrating it there is an additional $40 cost"
mate, they've paid $10 wtf did they expect?

World of difference...

cooller than manchester

24C where I am

what a difference 60 miles makes...

that's actually warm

1:10 PM
its just gone up to 32C!

@Burgi What link are you using for the weather?

google weather

Bob
yea uh, that's actually reached a respectable temperature :P

Bob
brb closing 100(0) tabs

1:13 PM

google says its 28 in liverpool

Bob
@JourneymanGeek have you considered a dedibox classic? :P

@Bob yes

is crosby closer to the sea than the city centre?

here it's 34 degree outside, 24 inside, and blazing hot in the server room.

Bob
1:15 PM
@JourneymanGeek cost too much?

@Burgi yes

Crosby is at the top.

that'll explain why its a little cooler

@Burgi The blue dot is me :)

1:17 PM
are you going to pop out for an ice cream and a wander along the beach?

@Burgi It's too hot :)

@DavidPostill i can tell, its the same colour as your name and your shirt

- what would you like to buy?
- a bootle, mate.

@tereško Regrettable acting, and more.
mor..vning

1:29 PM
@Bob twice the cost, for little real benefit

Bob
@JourneymanGeek welllllllllll... :P
(The Atom is fun to play with, but noticeably slow with interactive stuff. runs mostly fine in the background though :P)

"Requires more CPU processing to encapsulate data twice."
This is about L2TP versus PPTP
Is CPU processing on VPN provider's side or on my laptop?
I guess higher CPU processing will result in slower surfing anyway?
@tereško Unbiased review? Appears like 2 Intel agents are holding their guns to his head, forcing BIASED review...

@Boris_yo depends, if that means better compression, it won't. also, you're most likely limited by the client's connexion.

@DavidPostill We dont. What makes you think we do?
@DavidPostill I personally know two. AFAIK, they answer support tickets via email and chat.

@ThatREDACTEDGuy First day, Second day ...

1:45 PM
@satibel Compression of data?

@DavidPostill Oh, that

> Portuguese is one of the few (if not the only) language in the world where the weekdays are numbered instead of named

> Saint Martin of Dumio (c. 520–580), archbishop of Braga, decided not to call days by pagan gods and to use ecclesiastic terminology to designate them. While the custom of numbering the days of the week was mostly prevalent in the Eastern Church, Portuguese and Galician, due to Martin's influence, are the only Romance languages in which the names of the days come from numbers rather than planetary names.
Well, one lives and learns.

Interestingly enough, our week starts on "segunda-feira" (second... fair? whytf a fair? which fair? fair of what?), the second day is "terça feira" (3rd fair) and so on.

1:49 PM
@Boris_yo openvpn has comp-lzo. it uses a bit more cpu, but gains around 10% speed.

@satibel I do not use OpenVPN. Either L2TP or PPTP

@ThatREDACTEDGuy Hehe, that's to make sure Sex day is the start of the weekend :)
3

Then we have "sábado" because Shabbat because jews because why not who needs to make sense. Then we have "domingo" because "dominical" because Jesus got jealous.

@Boris_yo that was just an example, on windows you have MPPC for PPTP.

@ThatREDACTEDGuy Google translate says "feira" is "market" which kind of makes sense as the markets are not open on sundays.

1:53 PM
Not exactly a market:

@Bob most of what that gets used for is ttrss, a blog almost no one reads and errrrr.
not much else

> "Feira" comes from feria, which, in Latin, means "day of rest". The term came to be used in the year 563, after a council of the Catholic Church in the Portuguese city of Braga - hence the explanation for the presence of the term only in the Portuguese language.
> At the time, Bishop Martin de Braga decided that the names of the days of the week used until then, in honor of pagan gods, should change. But wait there: if it's a day of rest, why do you use "feira" only on weekdays?
> This is because, at the beginning, the order of the bishop was only valid for the days of Holy Week (that which precedes Easter Sunday), in which every good Christian should rest. Later it was adopted for the whole year, but only by the Portuguese - in Spanish, French and Italian, the gods continued to rule day after day.

Bob
@JourneymanGeek lol. I'm still running ttrss on an oversized VM
speaking of. deb 9 should be out now
probably time to look at upgrading...

(I'm still considering the xeon D)

Bob
@JourneymanGeek I wonder if you can't run your stuff on a glorified VPS :P

1:59 PM
@Bob I totally could!
in fact I'm running all my stuff on a VM now... for reasons
