@Twisty < and >?

@DavidPostill Excellent. Weird, I only need to use the first and then the closing angle bracket works. Thanks!!!
What's with the ampersand? Is that HTML?

@Twisty Yes, the markdown parser thinks that < is opening a tag

Aww, was hoping for a space

Q: When I bolded multiple sentences within a block quote and then edited more, they disappear in preview but are visible in editor

ashtreeI posted an answer on Stack Overflow and it's one of my first few answers. I entered almost the entire paragraph from this page that starts with "If n_1" and ended at "and its depth is 0." as well as an image and then another paragraph below. When I tried to bold a few sentences within the quot...

What's with the 8104 by my name?

@Twisty Your network rep

OH NEVERMIND

network wide reputation
Only really shows on mutiline posts.

I didn't realize I had that much network rep

2:07 PM
lol

@Twisty Space is &#32. But markdown collapses multiple spaces when rendered.

It should be more like 12000 because getting rep on SF is like pulling teeth

ah screw it
file validation is just ick
I'll just shout at users instead \o/

@Twisty yeah it is
lol. I do want 10k there at some point

Oh wow mine's nice D:

lol
Today I get to do something I've never done: Create a custom Outlook Form.
And I doubt I'm doing it for the primary reason they exist

(not counting SU ;p)
and I've been on SF longer than any of those

@JourneymanGeek ur all over the meta!
urggh
trying to get energerised to do thi script and I'm just like... meh?

@djsmiley2k funny story that

2:13 PM
@JourneymanGeek Yup, that looks about right. Did you hit a bunch of HNQ on SF in early 2016? Or hack into the SE rep DB?

So the csv should have x number of columns...

I was trying to get 10k to view deleted posts

and certain columns have fixed formats it should have.

@Twisty Oh, the hoax question
went rediculously viral

Q: What to do with the "rm -rf" hoax question

SvenIt turns out the the recent question regarding the misuse of rm -rf in Ansible was actually just a hoax (English) in some kind of viral marketing effort. It become quite famous on various media and gathered a large number of views. Since I don't think we should allow ServerFault to be abused in...

I mean, beyond HNQ

2:18 PM
wow
the comments on that are a bit :/
'since rm -rf / won't work'

errr, on anything more than a few years old it definately works
and you might go 'but who runs stuff that's a few years old?'
well the ubuntu kernel from feb 2015 only just recently went live...

@djsmiley2k SF folks have a very clear idea of what's maintainable.
And generally that's centos ;p

lol
The issue was discovered by Google's Eric Dumazet, and quietly dealt with at the end of 2015 with a small fix applied to the open-source kernel. Linux distros, such as Ubuntu and Debian, were distributing fixed builds of the kernel by February this year. Red Hat told us its flavors of Linux were never affected.
Like this for example
found 2015
Kernel updated in ubuntu? Feb 2017.

@djsmiley2k but if it was real he's have gone "seemed to happen on *specific version/build"

2:30 PM
Sure
my point is your answer is as valid now, as it was when the fake post was made

Hmph. Late answers review queue. Link in answer → please "edit to include relevant information". Link in second answer from same user "include relevant info please". Third "please include information here and disclose you wrote that blog post". Fourth (which claimed the linked post was 'found'): "fix all of your answers please". Perhaps I should be more patient...
(not disclosing affiliation is spamflag-worthy, right?)

to some extent yes
least enough that you want a mod looking at it

Fair enough

ah
In this case, oh, certainly

The answers are disappearing so I assume it is indeed being looked at

2:41 PM
One does not simply wake the dragon rouse the wauzer

Heh :P

@bertieb Nice catch :)

@DavidPostill Cheers!

php -> count($data)
$data contains array(1) { [0]=> array(11) { [0]=> string(1) "1" [1]=> string(1) "1" [2]=> string(1) "1" [3]=> string(1) "1" [4]=> string(1) "1" [5]=> string(1) "1" [6]=> string(1) "1" [7]=> string(1) "1" [8]=> string(1) "1" [9]=> string(1) "1" [10]=> string(1) "1" } }
so that's 11 items right?
Oh nope, it's 1 item
1 array

@bertieb IIRC you have to compress, optimize or whatever. Deleted rows don't clean up space automatically.

2:56 PM
@ThatBrazilianGuy Yup, optimise dealt it the killing blow (now 13M, as opposed to 1.3G) :)

lol

@bertieb Did you find out what caused that monstrosity?

But what are a few orders of magnitude between friends tables

I'm... somewhat interested in WordPress stuff.

2:57 PM
@ThatBrazilianGuy Jetpack remote procedure call logger

@bertieb So it was a debug flag turned on? Or a bug?

@ThatBrazilianGuy I'm (very demonstrably) not the best person to learn from in that case ;P
T'were a plugin that I had added a while back
Was trying to diagnose why it was causing the dedi to spike to loads > 100 IIRC
Think I asked for input in #wordpress or #apache but not in here IIRC

Or, in case you like facebook (shudder): facebook.com/groups/advancedwp
@bertieb Oh. Which one so I never use it?

@ThatBrazilianGuy IRC >>> all of those
(immediate feedback... could have Q'd on WP.SE though I guess)
(as above)
3 mins ago, by bertieb
@ThatBrazilianGuy Jetpack remote procedure call logger

@bertieb When I try all those and have no luck, I try IRC. However it's pretty rare I need it.
And when I do, I have no luck on IRC =/
@bertieb Oh, I wasn't aware it was the name of a plugin.

3:02 PM
@ThatBrazilianGuy More or less, yeah- can find the exact name if needed, but you wouldn't be installing it unless you needed it to debug an issue

Well, to be honest, WordPress is a terrible swiss cheese of vulnerabilities CMS. Drupal is vastly superior in every aspect.

@ThatBrazilianGuy Ja, can't argue with that; can't speak to Drupal as I don't know it

Hi!

o/

3:06 PM
@bertieb It was a joke star whoring attempt. And an internal joke with this:

@ThatBrazilianGuy Ahhh

@bertieb Let's just say I know Drupal and would be happier if I didn't have to. ;P

Fair enough

I think the stylized exclamation point of Joomla should be changed to Joomla? or Joomla:(
then Drupal#@$%!

No, it's "JOMLAAAAAAAAAAAAA!" as in "FUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU!"
Drupal should be "DrupARGH"

3:08 PM
!! s/FU+/KHAAAAAAAAAAAAAN!!!!/

And WordPress should be WordCrash

WordOwned

feck

WordAsInsecureAsWindows3.11ForWorkgroups

3:09 PM
WFM.
but yeah, I keep up with my patches almost religiously

And PHP should be "I bash my head at the keyboard until the code runs so I keep doing it as a career".

and probably should consider something else next time ;p

i may have done a silly thing

It's true because it's how I program.

(also, my rss reader is PHP, and I cannot live without it ;p)

3:10 PM
@Burgi Bombed Syria and started WW3?

@ThatBrazilianGuy I hate that all the "good" CMSes run PeeHellPee

Howdy evryome I'm trying to figure out if my ssd drive is using says 3 or 2. I'm running black magic and speeds max out around 80-100 man sec for wrre and 450 me/s for read. Is this right?

@William stop using autocorrect please, it's making it very difficult to understand you

@ThatBrazilianGuy unencrypted static ip and corsairs lagoon

@allquixotic Peehellpee and Mysql are kind of the lowest common denominators.

3:11 PM
@JourneymanGeek so much so, that certain Joomla extensions don't even work with Postgres as a backend -_-

@Burgi ah. I mean arrrr

Oh! Speaking of WW3. @allquixotic I've figured out arty is great for breakthrough (as a minor) in HoI4. Still can't stop the SU messing up Germany tho :(

@Burgi no one's really going to bother unless you're super lucky

my ISP has issued me with a takedown notice >.<

... oh
wait, takedown notice?

3:12 PM
@bertieb support artillery?

I'm on my phone. What do such low write speeds mean?

@Burgi home or work?

@allquixotic With some frontline arty too :D

@JourneymanGeek home

ow
is it a warning nastygram?

3:13 PM
@bertieb oh - is that a tank chassis with artillery guns?

@allquixotic I've heard good thanks things (wtf, hands) about that too, but just the towed stuff seems to work a treat for breakthrough

@JourneymanGeek see steam

@allquixotic I have been invited to give a talk on WP security during a security-oriented conference at one of the biggest unis in our country. I'm thinking of searching RA for "allquixotic wordpress" and putting it in my slides ;P

@bertieb the "Salmacht" (El Salvador equivalent of Wehrmacht :P) has several high-end tank designs with various mods to the tanks: tank destroyers, AA on a tank chassis, artillery on a tank chassis

@Burgi eep
@Burgi no steam on this laptop

3:16 PM
ah, the message will be waiting for you then ;)

@allquixotic Yeah, that was the other thing I was meaning to ask- how the hecksauce did you pump out those water-speed-record-breaking superbattleships?

@ThatBrazilianGuy you might want to build a bomb shelter; El Salvador will be invading Brazil soon as part of their plans to overshadow Nazi Germany as the most militaristic faction in WWII, "The Cartel"

(The invite has nothing to do with my profesional relevance and everything to do with the fact I personally know the conference organizer and he just went "oh, you like wordpress right, you could give a security talk"). In fact, it went just like that back in 2016.

A full rack of dockyards produces about 1.1 per year; and you need $TEXAS boat XP to max engine (and more, if other mods)

@bertieb save up 500 navy XP, then mod them, then build them and wait a long time

3:17 PM
@allquixotic Heh

@Burgi grabbed my phone

@allquixotic What drugs are you taking?

So I didn't miss some DDRJake-worthy exploit trick then

@Burgi is your client my mentally unbalanced coworker?
One of his dozens of "lovely" quirks is that if you as much as mention bananas aroun him, well, he goes bananas.

@ThatBrazilianGuy heh

3:19 PM
@bertieb the trick to navy in HoI IV is to build em big -- much better to be outnumbered with advanced, long range battleships than to be the guy with a zillion destroyers against 2 BBs

Now that's a terrible pun I just can't do in Portuguese.

@Burgi happily most attempts at that sort of nastygrams here fell flat

@allquixotic My proud Yugoslavian subswarm seems to be messing up the allies shipping somewhat

they messed up the first few attempts

Manufacturers don't make laptop hard drives with a SATA 3.0 interface because the drive's performance can't even fully use a SATA 2.0 interface. Is this true?

3:20 PM
@JourneymanGeek i has learnt my lesson

@ThatBrazilianGuy why? can't you say "Ele está indo bananas"? that doesn't make sense? :P /sarc
@William no, that's BS; even slow hard drives have a (small) DRAM cache on-board that can, for a very short period of time, read or write at ludicrous speeds
you get a momentary advantage when filling or emptying that cache with SATA 6 Gb/s vs. 3 Gb/s

@allquixotic Well, it makes as much sense as "Today I was and pancakes".

Macworld is stupid

user226528
Hear. Hear.

I would like to compare speed tests using a live cd in ubuntu is this possible?

3:25 PM
@William 450 MB/s is normal for read speeds; you'll find that many/most SSDs on the market are rated by their manufacturers around that speed, which is slightly more than 3 Gb/s (450 * 8 = 3300 = 3.3 Gb/s) and the 100 MB/s is also pretty normal for budget SSDs
it depends a lot on the SSD you're using; cheap SSDs are only somewhat faster than hard drives (great IOPS, but throughput might be only marginally better, especially in the write direction)
if you paid less than $500 for your SSD I wouldn't be surprised if that's literally all it can do and is operating correctly

@William Why? Your not going to see massive increases

@William of course it's possible; you just do it

It would be nice to use the same OS to compare on mac and pc. Plus I would like to test some really old macs with speeds tests.

We're dealing with the same drive over the same interface?

more important than using the same OS is using the same benchmarking software

3:28 PM
Thank for response

if so your not going to see any measurable difference and if you do the delta will be so small it would have no impact real world performance
a benchmark is just that, a test, gives you an idea of how it will perform day to day
People get in trouble trusting their benchmark to much (*google discontinued their JavaScript benchmark because every browser cheated)

So does it matter if I use the same benchmarking software? I'm trying to speed test snow leopard machines to decide if I should install a low sized ssd

oh... and Volkswagen ;-)

V8 engine is discontinued?

3:31 PM
@William no, he meant JavaScript benchmark

Or the speed tests

he a word

Yes, the benchmark not the engine itself

@William get as much SSD as you can afford, in terms of quality, performance and capacity - benchmarks should have little to no bearing on your decision
how many systems? what's your budget? what do they have in them now? what are they used for? (and why the fsck are you still using Snow Leopard?!)

3:33 PM
@Burgi Huh?

21 mins ago, by Burgi
my ISP has issued me with a takedown notice >.<
no more will be said

@Ramhound Relevant Old New Thing: Defrauding the WHQL driver certification process

Pick a benchmark for an is, stick with that benchmark and configuration, but there will be little variation between benchmarks (except if you use a benchmark that doesn't test larger file sizes) but that's more due to the fact because of cache sizes

For... what? For a website you own? Or for your personal domestic connection? Or for... Wait... Unecripted IP... Bucanneers beach... OH.

@ThatBrazilianGuy lol

3:36 PM
lol lots of questions. The machine are used strictly for internet access really and basic word functions and fcp7. we have had stability problems in tests when updating to newer operating systems so we don't.

After all these years in this vital industry, that's the first time I see it happening.

Q: Why I can not store more than 4096 characters in a Delphi 10.1 string?

Martini002I am trying to construct a string with multiple SQL queries for execute it on SQLite dabase, but it only allows me to add 4096 chars to the string, I tested with AnsiStrings and it is the same thing. I am using Delphi Berlin 10.1 And this the section of my code: for i := 1 to S.Count-1 do beg...

I can list a couple problems with that question anyone agree it's not on topic?

@allquixotic aren't read and write speeds the whole point of upgrading?

@Ramhound It's a programming question, FFS.

@Ramhound qblocked on SO

3:39 PM
(the why doesn't the variable type support something) the fact it's about a programming language design, the fact the code quality of the snippet is horrible are just a few
@JourneymanGeek Ahhh gotcha :-)
Love having Friday off

But seriously, I don't even think ISPs here ever issue takedown notices.
You can be investigated by the police and then they'd ask the ISP for logs and also confiscate your computers.
But I've never heard of a police investigation for domestic piracy, ever.

@William Well, upgrading to an SSD on a system that's running an obsolete and insecure OS on the public Internet and used to render video (Jesus Christ...) with 8 year old obsolete software, is like upgrading a 1960 Chevy truck with engine problems and bald tires with a fresh coat of paint.
3

They did and do here in the states
called 6 strikes
but most half-implemented it the other half-a$$ it

You would do a great service to your users to upgrade the operating system and Final Cut Pro to a version that can do GPU assisted rendering. It'd be worlds faster. And that'd include an SSD in the new hardware you'd likely have to buy.

^^
But they also stopped 6 strikes sort of because it wasn't effective

3:43 PM
@William Seriously, you should pull those boxes off the Internet; you're running vulnerable software and it isn't going to get any better: computerworld.com/article/2487996/malware-vulnerabilities/…

well at least not with Cox who proceeded to send out emails but never do anything or are we taking about actual takedown notices?

It's only going to get worse as security researchers find more and more holes in it that will never get patched. You're basically running the Mac equivalent of Windows XP.

@allquixotic Bullshit, everyone knows macs can't get viruses.

@allquixotic to be fair I'm the only one on the internet the other users don't know the password ;)

Ah, Mr Brazillian Cloud. I have this bridge, very nice, barely used...

Ew. Someone had a very exotic idea of how good he or she draws.

3:48 PM
I have the slight impression it's on purpose.

@William Still... for the task of video rendering, on Snow Leopard with Final Cut version Obsolete Minus 1000, you're almost certainly going to be CPU bottlenecked... Meaning, it doesn't matter how fast your storage is; rendering isn't going to get any faster. To improve rendering speed you'll need to upgrade to Final Cut Pro X, a modern version of macOS (ideally, Sierra), and a modern GPU.

@ThatBrazilianGuy the same way the pope is slightly catholic?

@JourneymanGeek And brazilians are slightly conservative, bigoted, and racially prejudiced. Slightly.

He doesn't get it. I'm done. o/

I get what you are saying I am still curious about Linux

@William I suggest you read Soft Reqs help center, your question will be closed, it doesn't come close to meet their requirements

What did I do wrong?
I narrowed it to Linux does that help?
Also I equate snow leopard more to vista Apple just release more versions. They are same old mess i think

.... read their help center :-)

Come on FedEx!
Stupid package

Helo thar.

4:50 PM
@William In your new question at Software Recs: softwarerecs.stackexchange.com/questions/41711/… you didn't say which Linux distro you are using. When I checked your profile I saw that you are a user at Ask Ubuntu, however your question is asked as a general Linux software recommendation. As I see it, this gives you 2 additional alternatives, either to specify the OS or to mention any possible cross platform requirements that may exist.

@karel he actually weakened his question; the original question was about getting the same benchmarking program (with as close to identical functionality as possible) working across Mac and Linux (and I think Windows, too?)
I think he was afraid of it getting closed and edited it; see the history

@Rahul2001 lol

@allquixotic Thanks for the information about the question's revision history. I already posted an answer to that question, so I have edited my answer and included the supported platforms in it.

It's high-pitched certainly

ah ok
also the sound on this laptop can be itnermittant too

@JourneymanGeek HDMI?

HDMI has a graceful degradation algorithm for signal quality issues - not sure about DP

though that monitor will do 2160p60 at HDMI 2.0
I'll ask a question if it happens again ;)
Its plausible the cable's not great
